ow fast the Summer holidays have come around. We may all have been stuck at home but time has still flown by. Slowly everything is starting to open up again and some form of new normal is taking shape. Some clubs are slowly returning to Kempshott Village Hall, but we would suggest you contact the various clubs to check if they have started to come back yet. We are aware of some and they are listed on the Village Hall page. Some clubs are also starting to write their regular reports giving updates on what they have been doing during lockdown. Sports are also returning to the local pitches and it is a pleasure to see the young people playing football and having a good time. Something they have all missed over recent months. They tell us it is good to be able to see their friends again. We have had a few calls asking if we are still collecting milk bottle tops because Collector's Corner has not been published. They can still be dropped on our drive at 138 Coniston Road, we hope to be able to include our regular column soon. As far as we are aware the others collectors are still taking their items.

At long last, we seem to be making progress in the lifting of COVID-19 lockdown but we all need to keep being careful & considerate. I heard on the news yesterday that Basingstoke Hospital has no positive tested patients, so if we all do our bit, we can hopefully keep it that way.

Personally, I’m still having to work from home as I’m not yet allowed to return to Parklands for my voluntary work. Hampshire Constabulary are working hard to get the Volunteers Return to Work policy signed off, then we have to get Social Distancing sorted in the office and finally my Inspector and I have to agree a Risk Assesment. So nothing changes just yet. Obviously there is only a limited amount that I can do from home and even those items take a bit longer than normal. There has been a small amount of local crime in our area. Some details have been sent out by our police on the Alert system, so those of you who are registered users should have seen those. If you are not yet registered, this might be a good time to sign up. It is totally free and you don’t have to do anything other than read the updates as and when. I have also had several issues sent to me by the Police Corporate Press Office. I have put all of these into the Press Releases section on the website at www.bdnw.org.uk so even if you do not buy the Gazette you can still read them. Unfortunately the number of reads on these articles is Zero in many cases, so maybe there is no great interest, but I’m fairly sure I’ll still be asked why the police don’t send information. It is all there, but you do have to make the effort. Whilst mentioning the website, anyone who has visited recently may be worried by their browser warning that the site is “Not Secure”. To explain, here is an update from our web manager,“These safety warnings are normally produced by your browser if the website that is being accessed is using the default HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) rather than HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure). To explain further, HTTPS is the protocol that encrypts any communications between your client and the website. It is used (and should always be used) when transferring sensitive information such as that involved in financial transactions (bank details, credit card details) or accessing health records etc. The actual website security and that of your client are not protected by HTTPS, merely the information that is transmitted between the 2 is protected using enctyption. Our website does not ask for or indeed require any sensitive information and the vast bulk of the information is available to anyone whether they 'sign-in' or not. Please rest assured that the actual website is secure and that the documents on there have been properly virus checked before being uploaded. Please do not hesitate to ask for more information on this or on any other items related to the website." Woodpecker Close now has a new NW coordinator. Thanks to Jean Cribb for looking after the scheme. Responsibility now passes to Mary Cushion who will likely be trying to recruit some new members. For the duration of COVID-19 with my police email not available and I’m still working from home, please send feedback and comments to brian.adams@bdnw.org.uk which gets sent on to me so I can respond, but please allow a few days for a reply. Kind regards

Brian

KANCARE – We are still here but…. I expect that many of you have had to make changes to the way you have lived over the past few months thanks to Covid 19, and if the reports are anything to go by we are likely to be affected by it for many months to come.

At Kancare (Kempshott Neighbourcare) we had to cease all our activities back in March as many of our volunteers are over 70 and a good number of our “neighbours” are well over that age and so immediately had to stay indoors. Our Friday morning Coffee Club was also brought to an abrupt halt by the pandemic. Since then we have monitored developments and the Government guidance as we know how many of you have come to appreciate what we do in the local community. Following a socially distanced garden meeting of our committee today (15th July) we have, sadly, concluded that all our activities should continue to be “on hold”. How long that is for we do not really know but we will continue to review the situation regularly. We are aware that this will be a disappointment, but we do not have any alternative as your health and that of our volunteers is of paramount importance.

Kempshott Schools Kempshott Infant School

Well – what a year! Parents becoming teachers, children at home, children in bubbles, someone taking your temperature every morning, no shared area - Oh no!! - but really cool picnic lunches each day! The children have all had great fun with our Under the Sea topic, whether they are learning at home or learning in school they have shared some fantastic work and some great ideas. They have made huge sea scenes, created handprint sea creatures, painted crazy puffer fish and sorted animals that live on land, in the sea or even both! Watch out for the huge orange octopus, (named Peanut!) hanging from the ceiling in Skylark class and beware of the swarms of jellyfish in Year R! Sadly, we have not been able to have all our usual end of year celebrations but Year 1 and 2 children have been in to spend some time with their teachers. This has been a lovely way to bring the year to a close for them. The Year R teachers have enjoyed meeting the children who will join Year R in September via some delightful Zoom meetings! This has been great fun and we look forward to meeting them properly at the start of next term. Once again, all the children at Kempshott Infant School can look back on a year to be proud of when, despite the strange and difficult circumstances, they have proved themselves resilient and mature, have continued to do their best and have achieved many of their goals. We know that our Year 2 children will be fantastic Year 3s and wish them lots of luck as they move up to their new schools. We are really looking forward to welcoming children to a more settled and calm year in September and hope that before that they enjoy a very sunny and happy holiday!

Kempshott Junior School News

It is with mixed emotions that the school year has come to an end. What a strange year it has been! It has been a Year full of successes, new adventures as well as missed opportunities. Kempshott Junior School were very pleased to be able to offer places to all year 6 pupils and key workers. In addition to this, pupils in ALL year groups had the chance to finish their school year by spending a morning with their class teacher …their new teacher even popped in to say Hello! We would like to take this opportunity to say a big well done to ALL of our pupils; from Year 3-6 for dealing so well throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Whether children were at school or at home, we appreciated that you had so much going on to deal with and it was a very confusing time. Parents and carers were at the heart of support for our pupils, and for that we would like to thank you. Our Year 6 pupils had to deal with the missed opportunity of completing their SATs…your chance to shine has been throughout your time at Kempshott and you will be given further chances at your chosen secondary school. Year 6 pupils did have a chance to enjoy an end of year assembly celebration and take part in a Year 6 Leavers Song Production. New pupils joining Kempshott Junior School next year in Year 3, were given the opportunity to come and visit the school and their new class teacher, after enjoying resources online to support transition. They also have shown great maturity through this difficult time. We would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE well done to everyone in Kempshott Junior School for their hard work and positive outlook and hope that September will reassemble a bit more of the ‘normality’ that we are used to. Thank you to the Kempshott Community in all roles, for adhering to government advice and staying safe. Keep smiling, enjoy your summer and see you all soon, from all at Kempshott Junior School. We have all been so busy enjoying the sunshine, which has certainly put a spring in our step! Much of our playing and learning has been outside, we have planted runner beans, so that we can watch them grow into giant beanstalks, making homes for bugs, flying kites and finding lots of different natural resources to make collages. To support the Lions who will be going to School in September we have been practicing putting on our PE kits. Completing obstacle courses and taking part in lovely yoga sessions. We have had Autumn walks, theto beautiful Oldwe Down area, looking out the for signs that ideas and activities for home Although not some all oflovely the children have enjoying been able join us, have been giving children tell us it is Autumn, such as the colourful leaves. We have also created spider webs like the ones we saw learning. As we had to cancel our Sports Day due to Lockdown, many of the children and their parents took videos of the in the foggy Autumn mornings and we made trees with leaves we have collected. We made a leaf full of children races at to home; has been so lovely to see. Autumn doing words to display show this our families.

As we see our Lions go on to school we would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents for allowing us the honour of being such a special part of your child's early years education. It’s a busy time for us preparing for all of our new starters in September. We are looking forward to welcoming all of our existing and new parents and children back in September. Dandelions have some Afternoon sessions available! Show rounds will be available in September, however these must be booked. You can do this by calling Jane on 01256 818857 or e-mailing info@dandelions-preschool.org.uk

KEMPSHOTT UNDER FIVES PRESCHOOL E: kempu5@aol.com | https://www.hatchwarrenunderfives.co.uk | T: 07951 660401

It’s certainly been a very different year at Kempshott Under Fives, but it’s also been a wonderful one! Since being able to welcome more children back to preschool again in June we have spent lots of time outdoors. We’ve been on woodland walks and have had a mini sports day too. One of the favourite garden activities has been building obstacle courses and our children who are still at home have loved joining in and building obstacle courses at home too. We have continued with our zoom calls and weekly activities for our children at home – and our last zoom call of the year was a party zoom! We couldn’t say goodbye to our older children who are going off to school without a little celebration; we had a low key but very lovely garden graduation, with certificates and graduation caps, and a little gift for each of our children too. We wish all of our children lots of luck and happiness in their new schools and although we’re sad to see them go, we know they are all completely ready for this next adventure! The children have learnt so much and they’ve grown in confidence and independence too. We are now hoping for a more normal September when we can welcome our new starters to Kempshott Under Fives and hear all about our children’s summer adventures. Preschool opens for the new academic year on Monday 7th September. We are holding meetings in our preschool garden on Friday 4th September for families who are looking for a preschool for the 2020/21 academic year. If you are looking for a preschool place for the next academic year, we still have spaces available - we are currently reserving places with no commitment until we are fully open for preschool visits and show-arounds. For a virtual tour of our lovely preschool please take a look at our Facebook page @ Kempshott Under Fives. We are located in St Mark’s Church on Homesteads Road, Kempshott, and are open Monday to Friday 8.30am-3pm during term times (closed Tuesday mornings). We take children from the age of 2 years until they start primary school and have spaces available from September 2020. If you would like to apply for a space, or if you’d just like to learn a bit more, please contact our Manager, Melissa,at kempu5@aol.com. We will send you an application form to register, and will invite you in for a garden meeting on Friday 4th September.

For all enquiries please contact Melissa Gerding, Manager, at Kempu5@aol.com or telephone 07951 660401 Kempshott Under Fives is part of Hatch Warren Under Fives Preschool.

Covid-19

Finally back to some normality, Kicking the COVID-19 to the Milky Way galaxy!. Looking somewhat brighter, Even though my jeans are now tighter!. Back to football training, Not going to lie I nearly died with this covid weight gaining. Something we all can relate to, Too many chocolates and fondue. What else was we supposed to do, All we had was comfort food. Don’t get me started on shopping, Two metres apart with a lot of dodging!. Queuing forever I find myself in a trance, Time seems to stand still for all I knew I could be stood in France!. Losing my mind going stir crazy, Becoming a sloth and much more lazy. Couch potato I’ve become,

I never watched so many quiz shows, But now I’m on Sky Atlantic checking out game of thrones!. Then things changed and we could finally meet our friends, Keeping a little distance catching up at weekends. People that furloughed and working from home, Slowly returning to work no longer alone. Finally the parks open and no longer bound in chains, Children can play merrily as they walk through the gates. People of Basingstoke my home town, We’ve all tried to adhere and for this we should be proud. I toast good health to You all, Let’s continue to be safe and stand tall.

The Titanic

A brand new ship, a luxury Star Liner, A promise of safety, comfort, and dreams, A maiden voyage, Southampton to New York, The largest ship of those times.

That’s when Titanic hit the iceberg with a crash, The giant ship waved, jolted and shook, Water started gushing from the lower to higher decks, People ran and climbed to save themselves from the wreck.

Over two thousand passengers on board the Titanic, Not aware of the upcoming disaster and panic. On the Titanic, people were dancing, Singing happy songs, people were prancing.

Those moments of desperation brought everyone together, Most women and children were saved however. The Rabbiter - April 2009 A lot of men were left behind, freezing in the Atlantic, And within hours, the ocean had gulped the Titanic.

A silent night, an unseen Iceberg, That's when things started to go wrong. A message was carried to the captain, The crew reacted and turned the ship.

CONSULTATION ON TEMPORARY CHANGES TO PLANNING ENGAGEMENT Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is consulting on temporary changes to how communities and businesses can shape local planning policies and processes. Adopted in March 2018, the council’s current Statement of Community Involvement sets out how local residents, businesses and interest groups are able to get involved in the creation of local planning policy, neighbourhood planning and the planning application decision process. However in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and based on government guidance, the council has proposed temporary changes to the planning document that would allow engagement to continue while protecting the health of local communities. Documents setting out the proposed temporary changes, as well as information on how to comment on the proposals, can be viewed online at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/BD03. Those unable to access the webpage can request printed copies of these documents or comment on the proposals by calling 01256 844844. Cabinet Member for Planning, Infrastructure and the Natural Environment Cllr Mark Ruffell said: “While the pandemic has affected how we as a council and planning authority can engage with local communities, businesses and groups, it has also seen us look at alternative ways to effectively communicate with each other to deliver important information and services to our residents. “We do not know how long social distancing measures will be necessary but we do know it is vital that people have their say on planning in the borough and that we find ways of engaging with residents that we know will work for them. This consultation sets out our temporary proposal to keep people informed on planning matters and we are very keen to hear their thoughts on our solutions." Comments on the proposed temporary changes can be submitted from now until 4pm on Monday 3 August. Following the consultation period, the comments will be used to inform the temporary update which is due to be agreed in the autumn. The changes will remain in place until the social distancing measures put in place by the Government are lifted. The council will then return to engaging in the same way as prior to the introduction of the temporary measures. For further information on the documents or the consultation email local.plan@basingstoke.gov.uk or call 01256 844844.

Kempshott Village Hall keeping you informed during the lockdown. Since the July edition went to press, the Trustees at the hall have continued to work on improvements. This month the side path and patio have been replaced with new modern sandstone paving, which has made real improvements to this area. Jack and his brother from Highereground Landscaping spent a week taking up the old slabs and putting a new base layer down, before laying the tiles. The result of this work is a transformation and can be seen in the photo (left). If you have a landscaping project in mind the hall can recommend them and they can be contacted on 07823 550813.

The hall has also invested in CCTV cameras due to a recent spate of antisocial behaviour and so far have come across a resident dumping a bed immediately in front of the hall doors as well as Monday Toddlers 9.30am – 13.20pm (depending on age).young (http://www.babysensory.com/en/ClassDetails/basingstoke) some men deciding to relieve themselves in the bushes. andAND Conservation News for August CONSERVATION NEWS FOR AUGUST

A particular “Thank you” to two local members of the community who reported a fly-tipped mattress last week, and to Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council for their swift action in collecting it. Thank you for helping us to look after this little piece of Kempshott’s history and heritage. We hope to return to our usual working parties in September. Please keep an eye on our web page www.fuzzydrove.co.uk for updates about days and times. If you would like to join in we would be really pleased to see you. For more detailed information you could email secretary@fuzzydrove.co.uk

Kempshott Conservation Group Email: kempshott-conserve@tiscali.co.uk Internet: www.kempshottconservationgroup.org.uk

Kempshott – a Biodiversity Increase Zone (BIZ) The Borough Council have been running a biodiversity improvement project this year in Beggarwood and Hatch Warren, despite the complications of Covid-19. The aim is to increase the biodiversity of selected roadside green spaces and many small patches of grass by changing the maintenance regime to allow more wildflowers to thrive and spread, benefiting both pollinators and people. They are inviting other districts to suggest areas where the same approach could be used to achieve greater natural biodiversity. During the work on the Kempshott Community Plan we established that the vast majority of Kempshott residents cherish their biodiversity rich large green spaces and support nature conservation in dozens of ways. Kempshott is already relatively biodiversity-rich but has the potential to become a real flagship nature conservation district if we work with the Council to identify the many smaller green spaces currently mown like sports fields, for the sake of "tidiness" which could, in part, be allowed to develop wildflowers. Do you remember how brilliant these spaces looked in April and May this year - full of buttercups, oxeye daisies and even orchids – simply because the council were unable to cut them until May? This could be a regular feature. Help us identify the many candidates for nature conservation treatment by contacting any of the Conservation Groups in Kempshott and passing on your recommendations. Thank you for your input.

This is what is possible with a bit of sensitive management. It was created by Hatch Warren Nature Group along a stretch of Woodbury Road.

There’s some colour in the Meadow In July, we recorded our first Cinnabar moth on transect in Down Grange Meadow This day flying moth is a distinctive reddish-pink colour, which makes it easy to spot. Their caterpillars feed on Ragwort, one of the few insects that can tolerate the poisons the plant secretes. As the caterpillars take up the poison, their vibrant yellow and black colouration warns birds that what they are about to eat tastes really, really nasty. The Meadow is not grazed so we have no problem leaving some Ragwort for the insects that depend upon it.

PROBUS MEMBERS REMEMBER THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN This summer is the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and today

the Probus Club of Basingstoke has several members who were “regulars” in the RAF. We have a Wing Commander, two Squadron Leaders, a Flight Lieutenant and Flight Sergeant and in previous years we have had two Group Captains. None of the present day members are old enough to have served at that time although many of our mostly civilian members class themselves as War Babies and do have war time memories.

Today, one of these veterans is the Armed Forces Champion of Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, and supports the local government in its covenant with all branches of the military, another was involved at a memorial service in Westminster Abbey when he was the usher to the chairman of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association and afterwards accompanied him to St James’ Palace for a reception with Prince Charles, a third joined the Queen’s Helicopter flight receiving a personal decoration from Her Majesty, the fourth was deeply involved in bomb disposal, and the most senior was involved with delta wing Avro Vulcans during the Cold War. All of them have been part of the array of interesting speakers at the usual monthly Probus Club lunch meetings.

But what of the majority of members who either did their National Service or were just too young to be called up? They had busy lives in industry, commerce, medicine, law and science in the locality and overseas. They now have a fulfilling retirement helped by their membership of the Probus Club. Some are keeping fit by trying to do their 10,000 steps a day, others pleased to get back on the golf course and one keenly looking forward to being a cricket umpire. Others may be less energetic but have kept their minds active with other hobbies. Not for them the problem faced by many being on furlough with an increasing waistline but by not dining out so often has had a positive effect on their wallets. See www.probusbasingstoke.club for information about the Probus Club of Basingstoke. Pictured above: RAF badge of 19 Squadron (who flew Spitfires) Pilot Officer Peter Watson of squadron who was killed in aerial combat over Sangette in northern France. He was only twenty years old.

THE NEW BEGGARWOOD SURGERY

Beggarwood Surgery, Broadmere Road, Beggarwood, Basingstoke, RG22 4AQ Telephone: 01256 396500 Website: www.beggarwoodsurgery.co.uk Karen Blackhall – General Manager Felicity Greene – NHUC Executive Dr K Oshiga – Clinical Lead Chris Stark – Director of Nursing A successful Patient Participation Group (PPG) meeting with the Beggarwood surgery has now been held for the second time utilising on-line video conferencing. We received a positive report on the continuing functionality of the surgery and those around the Basingstoke area. Morale remains high within the surgery and both staff and patients seemed to have embraced the new technology that has been introduced to support the new ways of working whilst safely ensuring social distancing. Despite all of the changes enforced upon the surgery they have received no complaints regarding service during the pandemic. This is a tribute to all the hard work the medical and support team has put in on our behalf during these strange times. To expand on the above, during the pandemic The Beggarwood surgery has been working in partnership with Bermuda and Marlowe, Rooksdown and Bramblys Grange surgeries to split cases into different areas set up in Basingstoke town. Staff are triaging telephone calls from patients and if they have coronavirus symptoms they are referred to the Red Site located at Bermuda and Marlowe. Beggarwood patients with no coronavirus symptoms are seen at the Beggarwood Surgery which is classified as an ‘amber’ site. Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Oshiga has been working with a cross practice team of clinicians who are taking on the home visiting of elderly and vulnerable patients to ensure they have access to care in as safe a way as possible. The surgery has been extensively using video and e-consulting appointments, which have proved very popular, and their use has increased 900%. Patients are reporting that they like the fact that they do not have to travel to the surgery. This type of appointment will continue to be available after the pandemic is over. Some nationwide services are now getting back to normal; smear testing went live again on 6th June 2020 and highrisk breast screening has continued as usual throughout the lockdown as has high-risk diabetes screening. Basingstoke Hospital has a screening centre on site and has developed a 20 minute test for coronavirus which is being shared across the area. If you need to contact a doctor please ring the surgery as usual and you will be offered a triage call the same day. This update is compiled by the Members of the Beggarwood Surgery Patient Participation Group. The Group (PPG) is open to all patients of the Beggarwood Surgery. If you would like to join us please either give your contact details to one of the Reception staff at the surgery, or fill in the online form on the surgery website. We welcome all new members.

SHUTTLE MEDIATION

When occupying the same space as your partner sends you into orbit, you need shuttle mediation…. Mediation is a well-known way for couples to resolve issues at the end of their relationship and generally involves you both being in a room with your former partner and a mediator to discuss matters. It can be quicker and cheaper than alternative dispute resolution methods. Mediation encourages couples to compromise and helps reduce conflict which is known to be beneficial for children of separating couples. Sometimes the barrier to mediation is that the relationship has deteriorated to such an extent that you cannot contemplate the prospect of sitting down together in a room even with an independent mediator to address issues in mediation. Shuttle mediation gets you round that barrier and yet has all the advantages that the mediation process offers. It is simply a variant of the more usual mediation model. With direct shuttle mediation, you are in separate rooms and the mediator moves between the two rooms to facilitate discussion and help you reach a compromise. Separate arrival and departure times are arranged to ensure that the risk of contact is minimised which can be reassuring for those of you with concerns. It can make the process possible but less stressful. Even with Covid-19, shuttle mediation virtually is still an option. Using Zoom as the online platform, breakout rooms can replicate shuttle mediation as you can opt to be in separate “breakout rooms” while the mediator moves between the two virtual rooms helping you both achieve an agreement that is right for you both. The use of the “waiting room” is also good if you are mediating jointly online but just need a break within the meeting if feelings are running high. At Haymarket Family Mediation, which is part of Phillips Solicitors, we can offer all options and are happy to discuss any concerns with you before you commit to the process. Feel free to contact Sheila Parkes by emailing sheila,parkes@phillips-law.co.uk or call 01256 854652. I am being made redundant. Do I need a solicitor to check my settlement agreement?

Answer

Paul Cowdery – Employment Law Partner To be valid, a Settlement Agreement requires the Employee to obtain independent legal advice setting out the consequences of signing such an Agreement. This is something we can assist with. So, what happens after you contact us? • The first thing to mention is that everything will normally be dealt with without you having to attend the office. • We will contact you to arrange an online meeting with Paul Cowdery, the legal advisor assisting with your matter. We will explain how our fees will be paid before you instruct us. We would require a copy of the Settlement Agreement and if available you’re Contract of Employment as well as details of your identification (in the form of a driving licence and passport) along with a ‘selfie’ photograph showing both your face and your ID clearly. • Before your meeting takes place, we will issue our Settlement Agreement Information Sheet. This will give you a flavour of what we would generally expect to find in a Settlement Agreement. • At the ‘meeting’ we will go through the Settlement Agreement to ensure you understand each clause and the significance of it. • If you are happy with the Settlement Agreement as drafted, we can then proceed to get it signed and completed. All this can be done using scanned signatures or even photographs of the signed Settlement Agreement. We can also complete an Adviser’s Certificate remotely. • It may be the case that there are some amendments to be made in light of our advice. In that regard, we would revert to your Employer and propose such amendments. If there are no major points of contention, his will be done in a commercial manner with a view to resolving any issues to ensure that the terms of a Settlement Agreement satisfying both parties are agreed. • We deal with completion of the Settlement Agreement normally by email. • Once the Settlement Agreement has been finalised, we would revert to your Employer regarding payment of the fees involved. The Settlement Agreement will set out the contribution your Employer will make to your legal fees. Sometimes there are additional charges and if there is any concern about this it will be discussed with you at the outset or if circumstances change and will at all times be subject to your approval. If you would like to speak to one of our team or book an appointment please call 01256 320555 or email mail@clarkeandson.co.uk. Paul Cowdery, Employment Law Partner Do you have a legal query? Email theeditor@kempshottmagazine.fsnet.co.uk and the answer may be

RECYCLING BANKS AT STRATTON PARK You will probably have read in the local media that the paper and cardboard recycling bins were set alight recently. The bins were closed off by the fire brigade and removed by Palm Recycling. One bin was put in its place until a second bin can be obtained. Unfortunately, within a couple of days more items were left/flytipped at the bank. As you can see from the photo below, the area quickly became unsightly. It may not be generally known but any waste left in this area is classed as flytipping and is a criminal offence which can be dealt with by the courts. This side waste (even cardboard/paper etc) is not collected by the recycling companies but is gathered up and goes for general household waste. Other items that have been illegally left can include fridges, freezers, lawnmowers, strimmers etc which are left by the small electrical appliance bin. In no way can these items be classed as SMALL as they don't fit through the chute. Information on what can be placed in the bins is clearly marked. Any side waste items are collected by the Borough Council for general disposal and increases the burden on the Council Tax Payer. Please use these bins sensibly and if they are full try and find alternative recycling sites. Most of the supermarkets have large sites. If the Ark Cancer Centre Charity bin is full, there is another bin in the Rugby Club car park which does not get as much use.

CRANBOURNE IN LOCKDOWN

We hope you have all kept well over the recent months and have been able to take this opportunity whilst we have been made to slow life down to spend quality time with our families. At Cranbourne, we have continued to serve our students and their families throughout the Coronavirus Pandemic. Whilst the School Doors were not open to all students our site was open every day with online lessons delivered daily to all students. As a school we adapted quickly and were able to put in place a “new normal” from the first day of School Closure. Here are some statistics from the first 2 months of Lockdown and Cranbourne: • Staff delivered 2924 hours of online learning, that’s 1462 lessons! • Sent Weekly Covid-19 Updates from Mrs Aplin • 100% of Year 10 Students accessed Online Learning through Microsoft Teams. • Sent 110 Home Learning Packs for students unable to access Online. (20 March – 22 May 2020) In addition to the work taken to continue our students learning and support our families we have also been working on innovative ways to help our new Cohort of Year 6 students to feel ready to join us in September. We have moved our Transition Process online, providing Online Lessons via Teams to all our Year 6 students with additional supplementary tasks particularly those joining the Cranbourne+ Program. Lessons are from across the curriculum and designed to help bridge the gap from Key Stage 2 to 3. From Back Garden Science to learning new languages our new students are getting a taste of Cranbourne and an opportunity to meet their new teachers and classmates. By the 17th July our Year 6 Students will have participated in 22 Online Sessions in 10 different Subjects. Year 6 also have the opportunity to attend an induction session for a half day in their “Tutor Group Bubble”. Jane Aplin Headteacher of Cranbourne said; “I’m so proud of my staff for the education and support we have provided for our families throughout this crisis. Every child has had daily live lessons with their teacher; we have been open every day; even throughout holidays for children of keyworkers and families needing help. We have phoned every family if their children were not learning on line with us; lent out 50 of our own laptops and 25 i-pads; sent out work through the post, when requested; done individual food drops in emergencies. Now we are back at school teaching practical work to Year 10. With a full set of exams and reports, which our teachers are now completing. The return to school has been super safe for staff and students. I really don’t think we could do more.”

Our Values Make Us Different

Sainsbury’s By Numbers – Part 1 Looking back over the last sixteen weeks – at the time of writing – it really is incredible how far we have journeyed as a store and, more importantly, as a community during this time. Nationally, Sainsbury’s has delivered almost 4,000,000 online orders to 900,000 elderly and vulnerable customers. The store at Kempshott now delivers in excess of 2000 deliveries every week, with an average of 40,000 items per day. Indeed, the vast majority of these items will have picked from the shelves before our doors open at 7.00am. Customers can now choose more collection slots than ever before, with demand meaning we now have two ‘Click and Collect’ services in the car park, almost all day. We now employ close to 600 colleagues at the store across all shifts – an increase of 100. A New Normal? You will have seen that we’ve made some changes – inside and outside of the store – to help keep colleagues and customers safe whilst shopping at the store. With these changes you will see more customers within the store but, we’re still controlling the total capacity at any one time. Queuing times will be shorter and, you’ll continue to be greeted by colleagues from our Customer Experience team; something you tell us has been very reassuring during the last few months.

UNIQUE BLOCK PAVING Derek Hooley Fully insured, local tradesman with 30+ years experience

If you have a Nectar Card, please consider shopping via our Smart Shop Service. Our scanners our cleaned after every transaction ready for you to use. It really doesn’t matter how many items you’re shopping for. The service now accounts for almost 1 in every 5 transactions and is by far the safest way to avoid cross contamination whilst shopping.

• Driveways & Patios • Walls • Fencing • Cleaning of existing drives & patios

Alternatively, you can download our Smart Shop App to your mobile device and scan your shopping with your phone. Simply pay at the Smart Shop and leave.

We’re still asking our customers and colleagues to safe distance when in the store. Where and when we feel an aisle is too busy for our colleagues to continue to replenish, we may take the decision to close the aisle briefly to allow our colleagues to work safely.

You will also see, as you enter the store, that we have installed a Hand Sanitiser Station for all customers to use prior to commencing their shop. We’re constantly reviewing the latest government guidance during the pandemic. We’ll continue to keep you up to date with any further changes via posters and our colleagues you see when entering the store. Therefore, the guidance you read here, may well change.

COMPLETE COMPUTER CONSULTANCY

Sainsbury’s in the Community Across the Borough, Sainsbury’s continues to help in a number of ways. We’ll be re-introducing our Food Donation point at the front of the store with priority given to the team at Basingstoke Foodbank. We’ll also continue to help and assist with bulk food orders from the team at Basingstoke Voluntary Action (BVA) as they continue to help the vulnerable across the Borough. Colleagues at our Depot in Houndmills, continue to help with donations to BVA and, we’re delighted to continue to assist with donations to The Camrose Centre. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the community volunteers at the Food Hubs across the Borough, who have delivered countless food parcels during the last few months. There are far too many to mention personally but, we’re certain you know, who they are. Finally On behalf of all our colleagues at the store, wed like to thank each and everyone of our customers for their patience and goodwill during the last few months.

Thank You. Stay Safe.

MALWARE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Last month I was the victim of a Malware attack that I had nothing to do with, but it seems more common for scammers to use Artificial Intelligence to target victims. The issue I had was related to an email sent out at 2:38am which was generated using random Subject lines and had an Excel Spreadsheet attached used for the payload. The subject line would be “Past due payment invoice [xxxx]” or “Delayed invoice statement [xxxx]” with the number being randomly generated as well. Usually there’s body content to draw attention to the unsuspecting user but what’s interesting about this type of scam is that trust is used to lull the victim into a false sense of security. People who received invoices from me know that I have worked with them in the past so if an email purports to be from me then it’s trusted but a sense of unease and curiosity is raised as people with either think, “I’ve already paid that” or “what outstanding invoice”. As mentioned, this particular scam used an Excel Spreadsheet which then went on to attempt to download a “trojan” with the prime intention to steal financial information. A trojan is named after and operates in the same way as in the Greek Trojan horse used to invade Troy. The Greek Trojan had elite troops hidden inside that crept out under the cover of darkness to open the gates of the sealed city. In this instance, an Excel spreadsheet was host to a hidden macro that launched when it was opened. A macro is a set of code used to automate repetitive tasks, such as connecting to and external system and importing large amounts of data, but hackers and spammers soon realised they could be used for malicious purposes. The good news is that Microsoft, over the years, have put plenty of workarounds in to protect users and typically require users to “Enable Content” that contains macros. Obviously, if users have opted to bypass this security then they’ve already decided that security protection is not that important to them. What struck me about this, and other recent types of spam, is that is has become more targeted to take advantage of trust. They have collated thousands of email addresses and then used AI or machine learning to link known contact. This is something that social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn naturally do as part of joining friends or business acquaintance together. Now many will be asking how they get this data. That’s simple. It typically through one of two methods. The first method is to obtain the password to the email account. The other option is to gain access to an intermediate mail server and intercept the message headers. I know my account was not compromised because the password I use is rather complex and the server will automatically block any third party that tries to continually guess. The other reason I knew it wasn’t my server is because I checked the login data in the security log and every logon came from the same address, one associated with my house. The mechanism to send email is rather simple and not very clever at all. In the early formative years of the systems on which the internet was created, you could only send email messages to people using the same computer system, or mainframes as they were called then. Ray Tomlinson proposed, in 1972, a solution to use a system called FTP, File Transfer Protocol to send email. FTP was used, unsurprisingly, to transfer files between different computers and Ray’s idea was to extend the “Verbs” (or methods) set to handle email. Ray defined a structure to standardise these files like “TO: <user> at <computer>” and “Subject: xyz”, “From: abc”. This way, the receiving computer could understand it was an email and handle it. This system was used for 10 years until the SMTP protocol (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) replaced it and is still in use today. And to deal with people’s name properly, the “AT” was replaced with the “@” sign so that there was a clear delineation between who they are and where the email has come from. The problem with this system is that all the information in an email is transmitted in plain text and a device called a sniffer can easily extract all this information from a hidden section called “header”. The header is a small section at the start of a message used to tell, you can clearly see the information clearly. Received: from [192.168.1.119] (HELO system-a.co.uk) by system-b.co.uk Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2020 11:40:36 -0400 From: Taylor Evans <example_from@system-a.co.uk> To: Jon Smith <example_to@system-b.co.uk> Subject: Business Development Meeting Message-ID: <4129F3CA.2020509.2323> The spammers collect this data and then extract all the information to build up a database of “pairs” containing the sender and recipient. A complete map of interactive communication is built up and then sold on the web’s black market; the Dark Web. The problem we have is that it’s nearly impossible to avoid these types of attacks. To put this into context, nearly 300 billion spam emails are sent out a day! The most worrying rise is Phishing attacks. Phishing sites are designed to look like a trusted site, such as PayPal, and try to obtain sensitive and personal information like password, email address, date of birth etc. This data is then used to access other system because most people still use the same passwords for many sites. This problem is not going away and next month I will outline in more details steps to try to help identify more of the sneaky ways these criminals try to scam you. Until then, the best advice is to always remain suspicious of ANY email and above all, make sure your computer is up to date with security patches and you have updated your antivirus software.
