is important to visit your dental team regularly even if you don’t have any of your natural teeth. Dentists do not check just your teeth, but also the soft parts of the mouth, including the tongue and cheeks. These examinations are just as important, so the dental team can spot any infections, mouth conditions or even mouth cancer at the earliest stages. Your dental team will be able to tell you how often you should visit.

All 20 baby teeth should appear by the age of 2. All children are different and develop at different rates. Teething starts at around 6 months. If your child needs pain relief, make sure you choose sugar-free medicine. If the pain continues then contact your dental team for an appointment. Don’t add sugar to baby’s drinks, or to foods when you introduce them to solids. is also worth remembering that some processed baby foods contain quite lot of sugar. Generally anything ending in ‘ose’ is a sugar, for example: fructose, glucose, lactose or sucrose. Regular visits to the dental team are essential in helping your child get used to the surroundings and what happens there. Cleaning your child’s teeth should be part of their daily hygiene routine: When the first teeth start to appear, try using a toothbrush designed for children, with a small smear of toothpaste containing at least 1000ppm (parts per million) of fluoride. Once all the teeth have appeared, use toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles in small, circular movements and try to concentrate on one section at time. You should supervise your children’s brushing up to the age of 7, and make sure they don’t swallow any toothpaste if possible. Your child should spit out toothpaste after brushing and not rinse their mouth, so that the fluoride stays on the teeth longer. If possible, make brushing a routine – just before your child goes to bed and at least one other time during the day. Remember to encourage your child, as praise will often get results! Take about 18 inches of floss, and wind some around one of your middle fingers. Wind some around the same finger of the other hand. (1) Hold the floss tightly between your thumb and forefingers, with about an inch of floss between them, leaving no slack. Use a gentle ‘rocking’ motion to guide the floss between your teeth. Do not jerk or snap the floss into the gums. When the floss reaches the gumline, curve it into C-shape against one tooth until you feel resistance. (2) Hold the floss against the tooth. Gently scrape the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum. Repeat on the other side of the gap, along the side of the next tooth. cancer
A mouth cancer examination is quick and painless – it only takes a few minutes. Here is what to expect: 1. you have dentures – full or partial – you will be asked to take them out. 2. Your dentist will look at your face, neck, lips and mouth for anything unusual. 3. They will feel the area under your jaw, and the side of your neck, checking for lumps. 4. Your dentist will ask you to stick out your tongue to check for swellings, and any unusual colour or texture. 5. They will then gently pull your tongue to first one side, then the other, to check the sides, base and underside of your tongue. 6. They will look at the roof and floor of your mouth, and the back of your throat. 7. They will then look at and feel the inside of your lips and cheeks to check for other signs such as red or white patches. 8. Finally, your dentist will put a finger on the floor of your mouth and, with the other hand under your chin, gently press down to check for unusual lumps or sensitivity. they find something unusual they will refer you to consultant at the hospital, who will carry out thorough examination of your mouth and throat.
To help prevent loss of tooth enamel you can: Limit acidic products and fizzy drinks to mealtimes to reduce the number of acid attacks on your teeth. This can happen because of decay or after an injury, and often leads to a dental abscess. root canal treatment is not done, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out. Root canal treatment does not hurt. Usually you will have local anaesthetic and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done. Root canal treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist. At the first appointment, your dentist will clean the root canal (the space in the centre of the tooth) and shape it ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at later visit and, when all the infection has cleared, the tooth permanently filled. After root canal treatment the tooth will be dead and may be more brittle. You may need to have the tooth restored with a crown to give extra support and strength. Root canal treatment is routine dental procedure. There may be some tenderness afterwards but this should gradually get less over time. You should look after any root-treated teeth just the same as any other tooth. Common sense tells us that if a person understands, they are less likely to worry about their treatment. Back up your spoken advice with a written leaflet. The patient can then digest the information at their leisure, and can refer back to it should they forget any of the details. This method leads to better treatment consent and can be particularly useful when dealing with patients who might feel anxious.

These are produced when we eat or drink anything that contains sugar. (You can then work through the selected products, discussing which are high in sugar and which would be a healthier option) often fun to ask the class to guess the product based on the amount of sugar that usually comes as both shock and a surprise when the product is revealed Oral Health Education Sugar Kit Biscuits McVities Chocolate Digestive 1.2 tsp per biscuit 5.1g per biscuit (29.2g per 100g) McVities Digestive Biscuits 0.63 tsp per biscuit 2.5g per biscuit 16.6g per 100g Tunnocks Chocolate Wafer-Fully coated 2.62 tsp per biscuit 10.49g per biscuit (34.7g per 100g) McVities Gingernuts 0.77 tsp per biscuit 3.1g per biscuit 31g per 100g Asda Custard Cream Biscuits 0.87 tsp per biscuit 3.5g per biscuit (29.8g per 100g) McVities Rich Tea Biscuits 0.42 tsp per biscuit 1.7g per biscuit 20.1g per 100g McVities Jaffa Cakes 3.25 tsp per biscuits 13g per biscuits (52g per 100g) Jacobs Cream Crackers 0.03 tsp per biscuit 0.1g per biscuit (1.4g per 100g) Patersons Shortbread Finger 0.6 tsp per biscuit 3.4g per biscuit (18g per 100g) Confectionary Fox’s Boiled Sweets tsp per sweet 4g per sweet 70.8g per 100g Cadbury’s Milk Chocolate 5.55 tsp per bar 22.2g per bar 56.7g pe 100g) Cadbury’s Bourneville Chocolate 3.6 tsp per 4 squares 14.4g per 4 square (58.8g per 100g) Sugar Content Sugar per 100g Sugar Content Teaspoons McVitites Chocolate Digestive 29.2g 1.2 tsp (5.1g per biscuit) 34.7g 2.62 tsp (10.49g per biscuit) 29.8g 0.87 tsp (3.5g per biscuit) 52g 3.25 tsp (13g per biscuits) Patersons Shortbread Finger 18g 0.6 tsp (3.4g per biscuit) Confectionary Sugar per 100g Sugar Content Teaspoons Cadbury’s Bourneville Chocolate 58.8g 3.6 tsp (14.4g per square) Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles 58.2g 3.47 tsp (13.9g per sweets) Bassets Liquorice Allsorts 62.2g 7.77 tsp (31.1g per 50g serving) 59.7g 7.6 tsp (30.44g per bar) Extra Strong Mints 98.6g 10.2 tsp (40.8g per roll) 48.8g 9.5 tsp (38g) Turkish Delight 7.35 tsp (29.4g) 7.4g 1.47 tsp (5.9g per tblsp serving) Copyright British Dental Health Foundation
