Some sugars are found naturally in foods. Some are added during processing and cooking, these may be called: • Glucose • Sucrose • Honey • Fructose • Molasses • Syrup or corn syrup Added sugars are often hidden and we are not aware we are having them. Read ingredients on bottles and cartons, and look out for anything ending in ‘ose’: fructose, lactose, sucrose, etc.
Sugar in fruit is released when juiced so smoothies and juices are more damaging to teeth. Whole fruit is best.
The nearer the top of the ingredient list the sugar is, the more sugar the product contains.

Good communication between dentist and patient is vital to an individual’s oral health. Common sense tells us that if a person understands, they are less likely to worry about their treatment. The best way to do this is to back up the spoken advice with a written leaflet. The patient can then digest the information at their leisure, and can refer back to it should they forget any of the details. This method leads to better treatment consent and can be particularly useful when dealing with patients who might feel anxious.

Cleaning your child’s teeth should be part of their daily hygiene routine:
•
If possible, make brushing a routine – just before your child goes to bed and at least one other time during the day.
•
Remember to encourage your child, as praise will often get results!
When flossing or using interdental brushes, keep to a regular pattern and remember not to miss any teeth. It helps to look in the mirror. Don’t forget the backs of your last teeth. It is also very important to clean around the edges of any crowns, bridges or implants. You should clean between your teeth at least once a day.
Flossing
Interdental Brushing
Take about 18 inches of floss, and wind some around one of your middle fingers. Wind some around the same finger of the other hand. (1)
Hold the interdental brush between your thumb and forefinger. Gently place the brush through the gap between your teeth. (4)
Hold the floss tightly between your thumb and forefingers, with about an inch of floss between them, leaving no slack. Use a gentle ‘rocking’ motion to guide the floss between your teeth. Do not jerk or snap the floss into the gums.

Do not force the brush head through the gap. If the brush splays or bends then it is too big - you will need to use a smaller brush head.

It is important to treat your dentures like you would treat your natural teeth, and to keep your dentures as clean as possible to prevent inflamed gums, bad breath and infections.
Interdental brushes come in various sizes. It may be helpful to ask your dentist or hygienist to show you the correct sizes for your mouth.
Hold the floss against the tooth. Gently scrape the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum. Repeat on the other side of the gap, along the side of the next tooth. (3)

Clean your dentures thoroughly at least twice a day.
•
Always clean your dentures with cold water, over a bowl of water or a folded towel in case you drop them − they could break.
•
Brush your dentures to remove any bits of food and dental plaque. Most dentists advise using toothpaste and a small- to medium-headed toothbrush.
•
Soaking your dentures in an effervescent (fizzy) denture cleaner will help to remove stubborn stains. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
•
After soaking, brush your dentures again before putting them back in your mouth.
Some special dentures are metal or have clasps. You need to take particular care with these to avoid damaging them. Your dentist will be able to give you advice. Dentists often recommend removing your dentures at night to give your mouth a chance to rest. If you remove your dentures, it is important to leave them in water to prevent any warping or cracking. It is important to visit your dental team regularly even if you don’t have any of your natural teeth. Dentists do not check just your teeth, but also the soft parts of the mouth, including the tongue and cheeks. These examinations are just as important, so the dental team can spot any infections, mouth conditions or even mouth cancer at the earliest stages. Your dental team will be able to tell you how often you should visit.
Every time you eat or drink anything acidic, the enamel on your teeth becomes softer for a short while If this happens too often, your mouth does not have a chance to repair itself. Over time, you start to lose the enamel of your teeth.
To help prevent loss of tooth enamel you can: • Limit acidic products and fizzy drinks to mealtimes to reduce the number of acid attacks on your teeth. • Drinks should be drunk quickly with out holding in or ‘swishing’ around your mouth. Or use a straw to help drinks go to the back of your mouth and avoid long contact with your teeth. • Finish a meal with cheese or milk as this will help neutralise the acid. • Chew sugar-free gum after eating to help produce more saliva to help can cancel out the acids which form in your mouth after eating. • Wait for at least one hour after eating or drinking anything acidic before brushing your teeth. This gives your teeth time to build up their mineral content again.

Gum disease
A mouth cancer examination is quick and painless – it only takes a few minutes.
There are two main forms of gum disease: ‘gingivitis’ and ‘periodontal disease’.
Here is what to expect: 1. If you have dentures – full or partial – you will be asked to take them out. 2. Your dentist will look at your face, neck, lips and mouth for anything unusual. 6. They will look at the roof and floor of your mouth, and the back of your throat. 3. They will feel the area under your jaw, and the side of your neck, checking for lumps. 7. They will then look at and feel the inside of your lips and cheeks to check for other signs such as 4. Dental care in pregnancy
Gingivitis is when the gums around your teeth become very red and swollen, often they may bleed when you brush them.
Visit your dentist for regular check-ups. You may also need to have x-rays.
Long-standing gingivitis can turn into periodontal disease and affects the tissues supporting the teeth in the jaw. If this is not treated, the teeth may eventually fall out.
Your dental team will remove all plaque and tartar from your teeth. You will also be shown how to remove plaque successfully If you have gum disease, there may be blood on your toothbrush yourself, cleaning all the surfaces of your or in the rinsing water when you clean your teeth. Your gums may teeth thoroughly and effectively. This may also bleed when you are eating, leaving a bad taste in your mouth. take a number of sessions with the dental team. Your breath may also become unpleasant. To prevent gum disease you need to make sure you remove all the plaque from your teeth every day. Brush your teeth at night and at least one other time during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste Clean in between your teeth with ‘interdental’ brushes or dental floss.
NHS dental care is free during pregnancy and for one year after your baby is born.
Periodontal disease is never cured, but you can stop it getting any worse by keeping up the home-care routine you have been taught.
If they find something unusual they will refer you to a consultant at the hospital, who will carry out a thorough examination of your mouth and throat. Healthy gums

Most dental treatment is safe during pregnancy. However, the Department of Health advises that you do not have amalgam fillings replaced until after your baby is born and you have finished breast feeding.
A good, balanced diet is important. Calcium in milk, cheese and other dairy products will help your baby develop strong bones and healthy teeth. Try to avoid sugary foods and drinks, keeping them to meal times only. If you need to snack then have bread sticks, cheese or vegetables.
If you have morning sickness you may want to eat ‘little and often’. If you are often sick, rinse your mouth afterwards with plain water to prevent the acid in your vomit attacking your teeth. If you want to brush after vomiting then wait about an hour.
You should avoid smoking and drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

Root canal treatment Root canal treatment is needed when the blood supply or nerve of a tooth is infected. This can happen because of decay or after an injury, and often leads to a dental abscess.
29/04/2015 19:58
Smart brushing
If root canal treatment is not done, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.
The tooth is checked at a later visit and, when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.
Root canal treatment does not hurt. Usually you will have a local anaesthetic and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done. Root canal treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.
After root canal treatment the tooth will be dead and may be more brittle. You may need to have the tooth restored with a crown to give it extra support and strength.
At the first appointment, your dentist will clean the root canal (the space in the centre of the tooth) and shape it ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.

You may find that you need to visit your dentist more often while you are pregnant. They may give your teeth a good clean and will be able to give you advice on how to look after your teeth and gums.
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can cause your gums to become sore and swollen, and to bleed more easily. Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste. You should also clean between your teeth with interdental brushes or floss.

FACE
Look at your face and neck in the mirror, do both sides look the same? Look for any lumps, bumps or swellings that are only on one side of your face.
NECK
Feel and press along the sides and front of your neck. Can you feel tenderness or lumps?
LIPS
Pull down your lower lip and look inside for any sores or change in colour. Next, use your thumb and forefinger to feel the lip for lumps, bumps or changes in texture. Repeat this on your upper lip.
CHEEK
Use your finger to pull out the cheek so that you can see inside. Look for red, white or dark patches. Put your index finger inside of your cheek and your thumb on the outside. Gently squeeze and roll your cheek to check for any lumps, tenderness or ulcers. Repeat on the other cheek.
ROOF OF THE MOUTH
Tilt back your head and open your mouth wide to see if there are any lumps or if there is any change in colour. Run your finger on the roof of the mouth to feel for any lumps or ulcers.
TONGUE
Stick out your tongue and look at the surface for any changes in colour and texture. Gently pull out your tongue and look at one side first, then the other side. Look for any swelling, change in colour or ulcers. Examine the underside of your tongue by placing the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth.
FLOOR OF THE MOUTH
Look at the floor of your mouth for changes in colour that are different than normal. Gently press your finger along the floor of your mouth and underside of your tongue to feel for any lumps, swellings or ulcers.
