Good communication between dentist and patient is vital to an individual’s oral health. Common sense tells us that if a person understands, they are less likely to worry about their treatment. The best way to do this is to back up the spoken advice with a written leaflet. The patient can then digest the information at their leisure, and can refer back to it should they forget any of the details. This method leads to better treatment consent and can be particularly useful when dealing with patients who might feel anxious.

You may find that you need to visit your dentist more often while you are pregnan t. They may give your teeth a good clean and will be able to give you advice on how to look after your teeth and gums. Most dental treatment is safe during pregnancy. However, the Department of Health advises that you do not have amalgam fillings replaced until after your baby is born and you have finished breast feeding. You should avoid smoking and drinking alcohol during pregnancy. If you have morning sickness you may want to eat ‘little and often’. If you are often sick, rinse your mouth afterwards with plain water to prevent the acid in your vomit attacking your teeth. If you want to brush after vomiting then wait about an hour.
