Indicates a fast, back-and-forth scrape on the Tam-Tam with a coin

Indicates that the head of the bass drum is muted with the right hand (R.H.) and the drum is struck with the drumstick-mallet in the left hand (L.H.) creating a deadened “thud” sound. The third attack in the example above indicates a “ricochet” attack in the L.H. with the stick. The encircled note-head indicates a muted attack while a regular notehead indicates a normal attack.

Roto-Toms are notated on a 3-line staff: 10” on the bottom line, 8” on the middle line, and 6” on the top line.

Piano The instrumentalist requires: -

2-3 Plastic CD cases (they may break in preparation for the piece/during rehearsals/during the performance) Prepare the uppermost pitches (Bb7, B7, C8) with duct tape or a strong scotch tape in order to produce a clicking, percussive timbre

Indicates a one-handed cluster; play as many notes as you can with one hand within the notated range.

Indicates notes which are muted with one hand while being played with the other

Percussion 1:

X-noteheads indicate a Tam-Tam attack/scrape with a coin or drumstick

Indicates a fast, back-and-forth scrape on the Tam-Tam with a coin

Dampen the string of the low pitch notated with the right hand in such a way that a harmonic is produced. This is achieved by locating an easily accessible harmonic node prior to playing, marking it, and dampening the string there. Any harmonic is fine.

The string of the notated pitch is plucked with the fingernail

Indicates a sandpaper, “toneless”, attack

Indicates a circular “wipe” with the sandpaper blocks of the given duration

Roto-Toms are notated on a 3-line staff: 10” on the bottom line, 8” on the middle line, and 6” on the top line.

Percussion 2:

X-noteheads indicate a Tam-Tam attack/scrape with a coin or drumstick

With the CD case, violently scrape the lowest strings of the piano (A0c.D1) longitudinally while the sustain pedal is depressed. The effect should be a screeching, thunderous noise.

Slowly draw the CD case longitudinally along the lowest strings of the piano (A0- c.D1) from “far to near” to create a “perforated,” “granular” timbre.

Harp

Since the “perforation,” “granulated” timbre is crucial to the piece, there are several gestures and notations that exemplify different “overpressure” sounds:

Indicates a Bartók pizzicato. The finger plucks the string close to the soundboard and then immediately slides off the string to hit the soundboard.

Overpressure 1 (above) is used to indicate a scratch/overpressure timbre that is sustained over time

Overpressure 2 (above) is used to indicate a scratch/overpressure timbre which is short, rhythmic, gestural, or accented Indicates “string buzz.” A string buzz is produced by plucking a string with so much force that it clashes against the next string creating a buzzing sound.

This notation indicates a vertical pressure on the string indicated. The bow is not drawn but the hairs grind on the string to create a “crackling,” “tearing” sound. The bow can be rotated but never drawn horizontally nor vertically. Indicates a Hand Mute (a gesture is performed while the other hand mutes the string(s) indicated, producing a percussive effect).

This notation indicates an overpressure which, performed “alto sul tasto” and as slow as possible, results in a “perforated,” “creaking,” and “granular” sound, which is rhythmically unpredictable. Indicates playing près de la table

Indicates a “palm slap” across the lowest strings, resulting in a resonant “thud”

This notation indicates a “vertical” or “longitudinal” drawing of the bow (towards the bridge from the nut and vice versa). It is typically combined with overpressure and/or tremolo NB: ALL TREMOLO IN THIS PIECE SHOULD BE PERFORMED AS FAST AND VIOLENTLY AS POSSIBLE

Indicates a scrape along the lowest wound-strings with a credit card or the fingernail creating a scraping timbre. Can be performed from upwards or downwards depending on direction of arrow.

Indicates “whistling” sound. Whistling sounds are produced by placing the palm of the hand horizontally over the strings and then sliding it quickly upwards or downwards, depending on the arrow.

There are three (3) different forms of jeté or battuto in this piece. From L-R, the first indicates a vertical jeté in which the bow is brought down vertically onto the string whereupon the bow bounces and “thud-like” percussive effect is produced; the second is a normal jeté in which the bow is drawn across the strings in a normal manner; the third is a col legno battuto in which the the strings are struck vertically with the wood of the bow.

Indicates that the string is muted with the left hand. Please remember that where on the string you mute it, affects the relative register (high or low) of the gesture or technique.

Strings arco: bowed pizz.: pizzicato a.s.p.: alto sul ponticello a.s.t.: alto sul tasto

Indicates an “explosive” gesture; similar to small glissando or a “crazy,” exaggerated vibrato

Indicates a sound devoid of pitch (ex. “noise”); this can relate to extreme bow pressure, dampened/muted strings, knocking on the body of the instrument

Indicates a pizzicato that is strummed (IV. à I.)

Strings play on a regular staff but also on a “relative” pitch staff, which indicates “lower” and “higher” relative to a middle line, which should represent—approximately—the middle of the string.

Indicates the “highest note possible” on any given string

Overview of “box notation” overpressure:

There is also a “Bridge Clef” which indicates that the pitches on the staff represent the open strings beyond the bridge (played exclusively on the string winding)

In the final example (below), several of the techniques are combined in rapid succession to form a gesture. The roman numeral indicates which string the technique is to be played on: string 4 in the first 1 ¼ beats, and string 3 in the rest of the example. Most of the gestures given on the relative staff are muted with the left hand (LH) but remember that the line represents the middle of the string; so, depending on where you place your left hand affects the register (high or low) of the given playing technique.
