Performance indications: General Indications: Dynamic balance: given the sound characteristics of the bassoon playing without a reed, some consideration should be given to the overall balance of the ensemble. Particularly in the percussion part for most of the score, sensitivity should be given to the bass drum strikes or the tam-tam scrapes so that there is some timbral agreement between the three instruments and a semi-uniformity of texture. Of course, it certain circumstances, particularly at the end (e.g. m. 144-153, 162-165, etc.) the percussion is meant to be somewhat independent.

Vocal Key Sounds inside a bracket “| |” are phonemic approximations and/or vocal utterances |k| - “k”, percussive, unpitched |ki| - “kee” |ha!| - “hah” is vocalized on the inhalation, as if surprised (!) |s| - “s” sound is produced by placing the tongue against the roof of the mouth; when it is accompanied by a dotted-arrow & crescendo, the end of the “s” sound is punctuated with the ensuing notated vowel (e.g. |a| = “ah”), achieved by suddenly releasing the tongue off the roof of the mouth when vocalizing the “s” sound. As an inhalation, loosen the contact between the tongue and the roof of the mouth. |f| - an “f” sound or in IPA, a “voiceless labiodental fricative” (also, notated as “f” in the IPA). In this piece, it is typically vocalized on the inhalation but as an exhalation, should sound like “white noise”. |m| - with a closed mouth, vocalize “mm” – this is always done at a “louder” dynamic and should sound as if you are being punched in the gut |rr| - “ur” or a “growl”-type sound which resembles an animal and should be performed in the lower vocal register

Bassoon The majority of the piece is performed without a reed and therefore dynamics are indicative of effort and not necessarily actual sound. The three-line staff indicates relative pitch (High-Medium-Low) of the various techniques and sounds. Many of the sounds have been innovated by bassoonist Dana Jessen (https://www.danajessen.com/). “Breathy, air” timbre, “toneless”; usually accompanied and shaped by a vowel or consonant; arrow indicates a smooth transition from one mouth-shape to another (see Vocal Key).

Downbow and upbow markings indicate exhale and inhale, respectively; usually accompanied and shaped by a consonant (e.g. |f|, |ha!|, or |s|, see Vocal Key). Unpitched noise-sound, accompanied by a consonant (e.g. |k|, see Vocal Key)

Vocalized air timbre, performed on inhalation (e.g. |ha|, see Vocal Key)

Percussion Flap (no reed): sudden stopping of the air flow into the bocal with the tongue creating a percussive “thud”

Unpitched growl: using a low voice with fluttertongue, create a low rumbling sound. The “pitch” of the this technique can be adjusted (higher or lower) with different fingerings and mouth shape

Baby Elephant: on an exhale, pinching the bocal tight with the embouchure, releasing small amounts of air to produce a high, unstable pitch stream; occurs only at soft dynamics. The name, coined by sound artist Pamela Z, reflects the nature of the sound.

Percussion set-up should be as is shown in the diagram. The staff (below) shows two staves: the top for the percussionist’s voice (see Vocal Key) and the bottom for the instruments. The right hand places the music above the staff, the left hand plays the music below the staff

Mama Elephant: on an inhale, varying the bocal embouchure to release different amounts of air creating a loud, wild, broken, and volatile sound phenomenon; occurs at a loud dynamic. The name, coined by sound artist Pamela Z, reflects the nature of the sound.

Murmur: assorted, nonsensical, miscellaneous vocalizations made into the bocal creating a haunted, unnerving effect
