Ask Those Who Know

﴾‫﴿فاسألوا أهل الذكر إن كنتم ال تعلمون‬

“So, ask the people of knowledge (in their fields), if you do not know”

A Rule … A method … A culture Fawaz Chawk This noble verse in the Quran came to serve as a rule, a method, and a culture. • This is a verse firmly established as a method or a process and as a A rule authenticated by the law of Islam (Sharia). It is complete and its foundations are built with respect to knowledge of science and people of science, and benefits from their experiences and expertise. • A rule that renounces ignorance, refuses to surrender to emotions and whims, and to free the mind from being influence by propaganda. It doesn’t clash with scientific facts and (advised resorting to the people of “dhikr”) provides answers to a dilemma or problem faced by an individual or a group of people. • It is a method that establishes a specialised

culture that sets certain boundaries for learned people, so that they do not trespass outside the limits of their specialisation scope, so that they would not give wrong information and lead the public to loss and chaos. For example, a person specialised in Islamic jurisprudence may not be proficient in medical matters, and the preacher who excels on his pulpit may fail on other pulpits, and so on. Each person excels in his/her place and field of specialisation. • It is a systemic process that encourages the general public to research and discover facts while disregarding rumours, fabrications, conspiracy theories…etc. And not to resort to people other than those who have experience and expertise, and not to rely on personal conclusions that are far from sound scientific foundations. • A culture that rejects deceivers and pretenders of

knowledge and warns against them. It calls for a distinction between a scientist and a pretender to knowledge (sciolist). Between the jurist (someone specialised in Islamic jurisprudence) and someone who pretends to have knowledge in Islamic jurisprudence, between the real researcher and the one searching for fame. One must realise an important fact; not everyone who talks about matters of medicine is a doctor, not everyone who talks about studies and scientific research is a researcher, and not everyone who talks about matters of religion is a scholar. • Allah “SWT” created brains for us so that we can distinguish between bad and good, between right and wrong, and he drew the clear and straight path for us. So why would we put our brains aside and rely on the whims and rumours of others? If we objectively search for the truth with an open mind, we will find it.

• No one in Australia has the right to prevent you from being apprehensive about the positions and decisions of some politicians, whether those related to the healthcare field or related to other fields, provided that this apprehension is based on true scientific facts and foundations and not on emotions, rumours and fabrications. • And no one denies you the right to criticise the policies of governments on managing the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and the way they deal with this pandemic, for you are a citizen who enjoys all of your rights that are guaranteed by the constitution, including your right to express your opinion. In the same way, you cannot deny others from having the right of having their own conviction about the existence of this epidemic, and how dangerous it is to human health and to the health and structure of the society.

TOGETHER WE CAN work in order to get through this pandemic with the least possible losses by dealing with it in a realistic manner that is based on science, away from emotions and away from politics and its interpretations, and away from the opinions of those with empty reasoning and their misinterpretations. #TOGETHER_WE_CAN

Together we can... avoid spreading misinformation

Fact-checking the fearmongering There’s only so much you can do when you get a scary meme intended to dissuade you from getting the COVID jab, argues Nasya Bahfen. Watching friends or loved ones get caught up in anti-vax rhetoric is tragic. We’ve watched the delta variant burn through our community, whose members have been persuaded by the slick-sounding campaigns of the prodisease lobby. The incorrect information on which they base their viewpoints often stems from sources affiliated with or amplifying the message of conservatives in the United States – a nation in which there is an entrenched culture of individualism. This culture is of course at odds with Islamic teachings which stress doing or avoiding things based on communal benefit or harm. So your loved ones who have become enamoured of the rhetoric of the antivaccine movement will spout justifications about ‘my body my choice’. Or they may ask why you’re so worried if you believe the jab works. The assumption made by the antivaxxer here is that because he or she prioritises ‘their body/ choice’, everyone else is just as selfish and concerned only with their own health whereas some of us are – shock, horror – actually thinking about others, such as relatives, colleagues, or students who may not be able to be vaccinated to whom we might pass on the disease.

Some of us may also prefer that the hospital system – where many Muslims work – isn’t overwhelmed, because when it is, it prevents the accessibility of treatment for emergencies and non-COVID cases as the unvaccinated take up limited beds and resources. I personally know loved ones whose life-preserving cancer treatments and regular check ups as organ transplant recipients have been affected. But hey, at least antivaxxers need to have their choice right? Of course, this is all apart from a flawed starting point in thinking the vaccine’s effectiveness is a matter of belief or opinion, as opposed to the simple fact that the jab works. The numbers around the world speak for themselves while here in Melbourne, hospitals in Melbourne are not overflowing with people suffering vaccine side effects – they ARE filled with unvaccinated individuals though. What it boils down to is that it isn’t a matter of choice, if that choice affects everyone else.

AL WASAT 124 ¿ Rabi' al-Awal 1443 ¿ October 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين األول‬1443 ‫ ¿ ربيع األول‬124 ‫الوسط‬

While there are victims of misinformation, there are also hardcore anti-vaxxers preying on them, and it is these hardcore anti-vaxxers who can’t be persuaded by facts, because they didn’t get to the position they did using logic.

I’ve taught literally hundreds of journalists throughout the course of my post-newsroom career; part of my job is teaching future media professionals to detect credible sources of information to use in their reporting, and to avoid false equivalencies (eg. assuming there are ‘two sides’ to an issue that must be given equal weight). Culturally specific communication campaigns have good intentions, but are reactive and sometimes too late – released after jab rates in former hotspots like Melbourne’s migrantdominated northern and western suburbs increased in line with other parts of the city less than a month after hospitals and graves started to fill up with unvaxxed, Muslim COVID victims. These campaigns are also limited in utility against rusted on anti-vaxxers, for whom nothing will discourage the parroting of alternative ‘facts’ (often based on Islamophobic, and always incorrect sources – I honestly didn’t have Muslims sharing Craig Kelly, Alan Jones or Pauline Hanson on my 2021 Apocalypse Bingo card).

But if your loved ones or community members don’t seem to be that far gone, and if they are simply not across how to spot actual fake news, here’s a handy checklist when they send something dubious in the group chat. 1.Check the source. Is the source named? Does the source have form in lying? Does the source have the credibility to be saying what they are saying? 2. Check the date. Has the information been superseded by other information? Antivaxxers pounced when a NSW Health official misspoke about the vaccination status of people in hospital. He later clarified the issue. 3. Check the motive. Why is this information being spread – is it for social media clout, or is it to convey useful and harm reducing facts? Are the people behind this video or meme looking for clicks, likes, and shares of anything that confirms their own worldview? 4. Check the facts. If an apparent medical professional is saying something that contradicts what 99 medical

Nasya Bahfen professionals are saying, you can safely discount the outlier. If no reputable other source is reporting the information, you can bet it’s not true. You can also try resources like ABC Fact Check. Of course, this all comes with the proviso that such fact-checking will be of little use to anyone who can’t or won’t tell the difference between random social media accounts and mainstream media outlets (who actually name the health professionals they quote, who in turn can be Googled to check their qualifications…so much for the antivax mantra ‘do your research’). Sad as it is, a springtime of death and disease may have been the most effective way of prompting the community to get the jab.

VICTORY IN SIGHT IN BATTLE OF OUR GENERATION Over the past almost two years, Victoria, like so much of the world, has been engaged in the battle of our generation. Beating COVID-19. With the state reaching the 70 per cent double dose vaccination milestone, victory is in sight. I want to thank each and every Victorian for the incredible job you’ve done. Again and again, Victorians have stepped up. Thank you to all Victorians who have had a double dose of a COVID-19 vaccine – and to those who have a first or second dose booked in. I welcome Premier Andrews’ announcement to safely reopen as part of the National Plan. Bringing down state borders and bringing down the international border. Reuniting families and friends. Getting businesses going again. Firing up jobs. And I look forward to the safe easing of more restrictions across Victoria as the vaccination rate continues to surge. Victorians have sacrificed so much over the course of extended lockdowns. Crucially, you’ve rolled up your sleeves, with a first dose vaccination rate of almost 90 per cent – that’s higher than the United Kingdom. If Victoria was a country it would be the 12th most vaccinated in the OECD on first doses. Having reached 70 per cent double dose – a critical early mark of the National Plan – you’re about to start reclaiming your lives. It’s a new chapter, as you begin to open up safely. And stay safely open. We’ll see relaxations for the fully vaccinated at restaurants, cafes, cinemas, gyms, religious gatherings, weddings and funerals. Children are heading back to school. Next month, when the 80 per cent fully vaccinated target is met, Victorians will enjoy even more freedoms. We’re taking our lives back. And it’s been achieved by Victorians – and Australians and their governments from all states and territories – signing up to the National Plan.

Working together. The Morrison Government rolled up its sleeves with significant vaccine supply and record economic support. We have provided Victorians with more than 10.8 million COVID-19 vaccines, including almost 685,000 doses that were brought forward to deal directly with outbreaks Our Government has provided Victorians with over $51 billion in economic support to date, the highest per capita support of any state. Over $28 billion in JobKeeper Payments, over $5 billion in Coronavirus Supplement, and to combat the impact of Delta, over $3.7 billion in COVID-19 Disaster Payments and over $2.4 billion as our half of Business Support Payments. We’ve saved lives and livelihoods the Australian way, and now Australians are reclaiming their Australian way of life. Whether you’re in Victoria or NSW, Queensland or Western Australia, we can feel proud. We have now administered more than 33 million vaccines around the country. That’s over 85 per cent of eligible over 16s who have had a first dose and the 70 per cent double dose mark now also achieved nationally (70.01 per cent). Australia’s double dose vaccination rate has surpassed the United States, and over the coming month we are on track to overtake Israel, France and Germany. And with first doses administered to around two thirds of 12 to 15-yearolds, thank you to all those parents and kids for responding magnificently to the challenge. I can understand in Victoria how tough the lockdowns have been. However, vaccinations are clearly winning the fight. The vaccines are doing their job. The vaccines are working. As a result, freedoms are very close for every state or territory that has at some stage been subject to lockdown, or for those states locked

in and wanting to see loved ones interstate. Planes are ready for take off again, as we prepare to reignite international travel and bring Australians home. All of this has been achieved by following the National Plan, and Australians getting vaccinated at record rates. We understand that every state is starting at a different point, but we all want the same ending – to bring our country together again, and join the rest of the world. I know all Premiers and Chief Ministers want this. It’s what the National Plan that we agreed to is all about. For locked down states, it’s been about winning freedoms back. For others, it’s about protecting the freedoms you’ve been fortunate to enjoy by safely reopening as a nation. But for everyone, it’s about getting back to living our lives as we once did, as best we can. The vaccine supply is there for everyone. Right now. So please, go and get your second jab. If you haven’t already, please get your first dose. Encourage your friends and family to also get vaccinated. Victoria, you know this has been the

battle of our generation. It’s been long and tough. There have been many sacrifices. We can’t be complacent. We still have to take one step at a time safely and ensure we always put that safety goal first as we reopen our country. So thank you again. For rolling up your sleeves, not just in terms of getting the vaccines, but for the sacrifices you’ve made and the resilience you’ve demonstrated. And thank you to the thousands of nurses, doctors, pharmacists and health care workers who have cared for us, protected us and vaccinated us. Let’s bring this home – that 70 per cent has to become an 80. And most importantly, ensure that we are back together with our families, friends and loved ones this Christmas. Making this Christmas the best ever.

TO ALL OUR FUTURE MOTHERS Pregnancy is so special that it brings a bouquet of happiness, pride and an overwhelming sense of responsibility towards our family. Being pregnant in a pandemic is no easy task, the mother to be is expected to not just protect herself but also her unborn bundle of joy. COVID- 19 can cause severe adverse outcomes for both the mother and the foetus / newborn. However research has reassured us that COVID- 19 vaccination is extremely protective to both mother and child. Exciting news to all of us doctors and to the general public. Getting the vaccine will reduce the risk of pregnant mothers from getting very unwell in ICU, it also reduces the risk of the mothers from going into premature labour and thus progressing into a normal term pregnancy. Keep yourself and your unborn child safe and have the peace of mind you deserve, get your vaccine.

Dr Zeina Merhi • Obstetrics and Gynaecology Trainee • Member of AIMA (Australian Islamic Medical Association)

Being a migrant who fled with my 4 little children, 26 years ago, from my home country to secure my kids future, I have been grateful for what Australia has provided to us. It has offered us many opportunities, such as education, work and a decent life. Therefore, the least we can do in return is to ensure the country is safe by conducting the right actions required by the government who has been supporting all Australians, during the Covid 19 pandemic. Together we can support our beautiful country Australia and look after it by taking the Covid 19 vaccination without any delay. God bless Australia and bless you all. Yours sincerely,

Message From The Hon. Natalie Ward MLC Minister for Multiculturalism ‫رسالة من سعادة السيدة ناتالي وارد النائب في المجلس التشريعي‬ ‫وزيرة التعددية الثقافية‬ Al Wasat Magazine Together We Can Campaign My best wishes to Al Wasat, Australia’s first bilingual (Arabic and English) Muslim monthly community magazine, for its Together We Can campaign. This important initiative is a great way to raise people’s spirits and foster community solidarity as we all rally to get on top of the COVID-19 pandemic. The people of New South Wales have moved quickly to push the State’s double dose vaccinations beyond the 80 per cent target - a fantastic achievement - but there is still work to be done. The campaign reminds us COVID remains a dangerous disease and why it is still important to step forward to be vaccinated. The magazine asks health experts, community leaders, imams, teachers, students, sports celebrities and business owners to share these messages with the community. As cover lines such as Stay Safe – Save Life, Frontline Heroes and Wear the Mask Reduce the Risk indicate, Al Wasat has been working hard to keep its readership informed about COVID and the measures intended to counter its spread. Thank you for this work. you have helped to save lives.

Three months into the pandemic have shown us how resilient, dedicated and united Australians have been to keep one another safe and weather this storm together. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible so that we can all remain safe and healthy and quickly return the community to life outside of lockdown.

Sheba Nandkeolyar CEO of MultiConnexions Group

we did it TOGETHER

The past few months have been the toughest months for many, especially for those living in NSW and Victoria, where covid 19 caused havoc. Covid 19 was rampant throughout the community and affected many- it was a lot closer to home than the initial outbreak of 2020. No one was expecting almost 4 months of lockdown- especially after regaining a sense of normality in the early months of 2021. Of particular attention were the LGAs of concern in NSW, where added pressure was placed on the community- greater restrictions, over policing and lack of adequate support, residents in these areas undoubtedly felt an element of inequity in the difference in treatment between areas. Whilst some were flocking to the beaches during the restrictions without accountability, others were monitored and surveilled with a rare opportunity to explain their circumstances. This period taught us many things, whether as individuals, professionals or as community leaders, in that whilst laws and regulations are implemented in emergency circumstances which are critical to maintain public safety, this by no means infers that one should forgo their rights or civil liberties, and infact, one should be encouraged to take up any matter that has been dealt with unjustly or illegally, through the legal channels available to us. Government and law enforcement agencies are there to ensure the population is safe and that order is maintained despite the circumstances. Equally, the rights of individuals and their constitutional rights should also be preserved at whatever cost, otherwise anarchy will ensue as a collateral. It

AL WASAT 124 ¿ Rabi' al-Awal 1443 ¿ October 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين األول‬1443 ‫ ¿ ربيع األول‬124 ‫الوسط‬

is a difficult balancing act. Hence, it was important to keep the conversation going between government and law enforcement agencies as well as the community. An opportunity to raise concerns and find ways to address them. Frequent meetings took place between community leaders and Government and law enforcement agencies, educational campaigns addressing the community as well as fact sheets and information to help negate the misinformation about Covid 19 and the vaccine, were critical elements in facilitating the path out of the restrictions and lock downs. Slowly but surely we got there. We did it- together. Gradually weaving our way back to freedom, covid affected states have begun putting their heads back over the water and taking a deep breath for the next phase. We must remember however- we cannot be complacent. This experience has taught us responsibility. We need to be responsible in our personal capacities to assess whether one should stay home or not. Whether one should interact in a gathering or host large numbers. What safety measures one should implement to ensure that everyone’s health is preserved. Personal responsibility allows us to experience our freedoms to their full potential- laws will not

Ramia Abdo Sultan Lawyer

need to be legislated or enforced upon us, unless there is a need. The recent lockdowns would have undoubtedly triggered many issues in communities, ones which need to be addressed- immediately. If you have experienced any mental health issues during this difficult time, it is important you seek professional help. There is no harm [or shame] in doing so. Further, if you believe you have [or had] been a victim of excessive or disproportionate policing during this time, it is important that the matter be taken up and reported. Anyone who wishes to pursue a complaint should seek legal advice, or alternatively, lodge a complaint with the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC), which is an independent investigative commission to provide oversight of the NSW Police Force and NSW Crime Commission. In the end, the was light at the end of the tunnel. Despite the dents, challenges and difficulties, communities came together to help one another come out of this difficult time.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an incredibly challenging time for people all over the world. We have seen just how this virus threatens our way of life on various fronts. But I am filled with pride that together we have kept our community safe and our economy strong. Now, our focus is on vaccination, which is our pathway out of this global pandemic. I encourage everyone to roll up and get vaccinated. It’s the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community. Importantly, as vaccination levels increase across Australia we become closer to reuniting with our loved ones, travelling freely and doing more of the things we love. Together, with the support of every single person, we can continue to remain safe and strong.

“I thank the overwhelming majority of Territorians who have done the right thing in getting vaccinated. “Last week, we introduced mandatory vaccination timelines for many workers, to protect vulnerable Territorians. “Vaccination is our best defence against the virus. Together, we can do this.”

Hon Michael Gunner

Chief Minister of the Northern Territory

Hon Steven Marshall MP Premier of South Australia

Travel exemption applications NOW OPEN FOR PARENTS OF AUSTRALIANS The parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for a travel exemption, for travel to Australia from 1 November 2021. Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the changes would reunite many families separated by the pandemic. “For more than 18 months,

many families with parents overseas have missed weddings, funerals, the birth of grandchildren, and other significant events. I thank these families for their patience and their sacrifice over this period,” Minister Andrews said. “With today’s change, parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents can reunite in Australia; they can once more hold their grandchildren, and gather

in person to share life’s significant milestones. “The change is possible because many millions of Australians have rolled up their sleeves and been vaccinated. In line with Australia’s National Plan, I look forward to further easing travel restrictions over coming weeks and months as Australia’s vaccination rate continues to climb.”

Applications for a travel exemption can be made through the Department of Home Affairs Travel Exemption Portal, for travel to Australia from 1 November 2021. A variety of parental relationships are recognised, including biological, adoptive, legal, step-parent, and parent-inlaw. Evidence of a parental relationship with an Australian citizen or

permanent resident is required, with examples of the type of evidence required available on the Department’s website. Parents must also have a valid passport, visa and proof of vaccination for travel to Australia. All international travellers remain subject to state and territory quarantine arrangements.

TOGETHER WE CAN Over the last year, we have stuck together to get through this pandemic, protecting each other’s health and looking after our most vulnerable. Now, as we emerge from lockdown, we can slow the spread of the virus by getting vaccinated. Together, we can re-open and re-build.

Your doctor’s advice

• The advent of COVID-19 brought with it not only severe and potentially lethal infection; it also brought lockdown and financial hardships, and related mental health issues. Anxiety and (in severe cases) depression are the main psychological conditions that people encounter during the current state of uncertainty. • The feelings of helplessness and inability to have any control lead to anxiety and depression. The negative thoughts and assumptions can lead to constant feelings such as stress, muscle tension, palpitation, and shortness of

breath, which may lead to our response in the form of irritability, anger, low mood, relationship difficulties, and inability to cope. These, in turn, further feed into our negative thinking. • Stress and anxiety depend on the nature of the events and the person’s resources, psychological defences, and coping mechanisms. So different people have different thresholds for feeling anxiety. Letting go of the “uncontrollable” and focussing on the things we can control can help resolve our anxiety. • In the current period

AL WASAT 124 ¿ Rabi' al-Awal 1443 ¿ October 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين األول‬1443 ‫ ¿ ربيع األول‬124 ‫الوسط‬

of uncertainty, it isn’t easy to differentiate between controllable and uncontrollable. However, with some experience, we have determined a few facts that can help us manage and focus on (controllable). These include the potential lethality of COVID-19 infection, strategies such as masks and social distancing, can prevent the spread, and above all, the possibility of returning to our “normal” way of life if we are fully vaccinated. Although the vaccine may have side effects like any other medication, these are limited, and we can discuss the risks and benefits

with our primary healthcare provider. • Remember, we need to use our available resources and then rely on Allah (Subhanaho Wa Ta’ala). • We need to remind ourselves that this is a test and a passing phase. • We need to do the right thing by ourselves, our family, our community, and our country.

(and have!) Getting vaccinated is the safest and fastest way out of the pandemic. Over the past few months, we’ve worked with NSW Health to ensure testing clinics and vaccination clinics were rolled out in Cumberland and we’ve been actively promoting vaccinations to pursue the 70% target. I’m so proud of this resilient and responsive community

who’ve turned out in droves to get vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccinations are safe, tested and effective at reducing hospitalisation and death. It’s the best way to keep everyone safe and to get back to doing the things we love. We welcome the freedoms we’re receiving as we smash through targets. If you haven’t already, book your vaccination and make sure you get your

second vaccination as well. Stay safe and wishing our community the best for the rest of the year. Let’s end it on a good note, because together we can.

Like Many if you lockdown has been incredibly difficult and the things we took for granted are some of the things we miss the most such as going to the footy, delivering our Bachar Houli Programs and seeing our family and friends. Let’s keep the community safe and get vaccinated so we can get back to what we love doing.

Ali Fahour

Director Bachar Houli Foundation

We hear from some members of our community that our natural immune system is sufficient to protect us from the COVID-19 virus. Young physically fit people, they claim, will be OK and not suffer dangerous effects. By now it is clear that the virus has seriously harmed our community, including young people in their 20s 30s and 40s. Many of our brothers and sisters are on ventilators to help them breathe. We know that Allah has promised a cure for all diseases and we are confident that this pandemic will be controlled. The vaccine, which works to stimulate our immune system against the virus, is one of those factors which can control the plague. Our Muslim doctors have made it very clear how essential it is to get the vaccine. PLEASE get vaccinated immediately.

They are the key to us getting back to the things we love, once enough of the community is fully vaccinated. All of the vaccines available in Australia are safe. COVID-19 is a deadly illness. I had two doses of AstraZeneca and the main side-effect I felt was relief. Vaccination protects you by making you less likely to catch COVID and experience severe illness, and protects others by making you less likely to spread it. Please get vaccinated to protect yourself, your loved ones and our community, and get us back to living the lives we love. Regards,

TOGETHER WE CAN

Stopping the COVID-19 pandemic requires using all the tools we have available. Wearing masks and social distancing help reduce your chance of being exposed to the virus or spreading it to others, but these measures are not enough. Vaccines work with your immune system, so it will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed. Once that is done, we can have a normal society again. We can enjoy daily life, family events, back to school and back to work. We can have real holiday activities. It’s very simple: We will get our lives back.

Dr Imad Berro MD, PhD Pathologist, Microbiologist Chairperson Arab Council Australia

The best things happen when we all work together. As we work through these challenging times, it is vital we continue to get vaccinated to keep our loved ones and our communities safe. Thank you to our incredible health workers who have risked their own lives to keep us all safe during this difficult time. As we slowly return to catching up with family and friends, and dining out at restaurants, pubs and clubs, let’s continue to stay COVID safe. There is light at the end of this long and difficult tunnel, so let’s roll up our sleeves and get the jab done. Together we can!

“Together we can”. Although it is only three words, the phrase has a big meaning, especially during the time we are living in with the pandemic. It is important to ensure that everyone works together in attempting to restore the world to how it was before COVID, which is why everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated, and follow the advice of the health officials. Working together will help resolve an issue that requires a multilateral approach!

Together we can overcome the challenges of this pandemic bi’ithnillah and once again reunite with our families and communities. If everyone does their part and contributes to the progression to a safe Victoria, as well as remember each other in our dua, we should be free in no time inshallah!

Just imagine sitting down. It’s 2:05pm and you haven’t stood up since waking up, haven’t had a proper meal yet, just some biscuits and snacks. You’re zoning out and so very close to falling asleep. This is what it felt like for most of us students during the pandemic. Trying to learn through Zoom was a very difficult and challenging experience, we wouldn’t want to go through that ever again as it made us lazier than ever and impacted our learning. As Victoria finally approaches 80% first dose, we have the chance to come back to reality and come back to school. Getting vaccinated will help us students, the leaders of tomorrow to experience freedom.

‘Indeed, with hardship comes ease’ [94:5], one of the many beautiful verses of the Quran, fits perfectly with the situation we are currently facing. In the past 2 years, many of us have faced some form of hardship, and the ease is finally here. However, the key is for all of us to be vaccinated to safely enjoy our awaiting freedoms.

TOGETHER WE CAN

We have always known that the Victorian Muslim community is diverse, vibrant, hardworking, and innovative. Now we can be sure that it is also an incredibly strong and resilient community. Our community has faced many challenges over the past two years as a result of the COVID pandemic. Many have fallen seriously ill and sadly some have passed away, Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raaji’oon. Many have suffered significant financial hardship, and some have been forcibly and unreasonably locked down. Muslims have been the target of irresponsible media reporting and ill-natured scapegoating. And all of us have endured many months of not being able to attend our beloved masjids. Through it all, the community has displayed praiseworthy patience and dignity. And we have remained united. In fact, the Victorian Muslim community has never connected, collaborated, and cared for one another as much as we have done during these most testing of times. We have established a platform for togetherness and cooperation that will serve us well and gives us genuine reason to be optimistic about what the Muslim community can achieve come what may. Masha-Allah. The ICV has been at the forefront of the COVID response on behalf of its member societies and the broader Muslim community, and we continue to do so as we collectively drive greater vaccination rates in our communities. We are on the cusp of re-opening, let’s ensure that we do so in the same way that we have handled the pandemic, with patience and care for each other insha-Allah.

• The past two years have been tough on all Victorians, particularly those in Melbourne. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. • Together we can reopen our city safely and start doing the things we all miss. The only way to reopen and stay open is to get vaccinated. • We can’t wait to welcome visitors, shoppers and workers back into the City of Melbourne once we hit the vaccination targets. • We are helping our small business to be able to trade outside and we are doing extra cleaning to keep everyone safe in the city. • We have all missed so many celebrations over the past two years but there are many reasons to be optimistic as we come into Summer. Thank you for getting vaccinated, for following the rules and for getting us open again. I look forward to seeing you all in the city this Summer.

COVID-19 pandemic (marathon) and your

mental health Imagine you are one of the sprint runners lined up for a 100m run. You can see the finish line from a distant. “I will go all-out, immediately, until the end.” This is most likely your approach and it makes sense why. You know it is worth your prompt best shot as the race will be over in a few seconds. Compare that with a marathon where you need to focus on your endurance.

Dr Mohammad Gadi, FRACGP - Melbourne GP

This pandemic is teaching us the essence of a marathon, except that it is not a true race. It is just a very long distance run. The numerous questions, uncertainties, and ongoing challenges in so many life’s dimensions certainly make this feel like a marathon for many of us.

Here are a few points to think about: 1. It is normal to feel the pressure. Everyone in a marathon would be sweaty, huffing and puffing. Most of them would feel the strain in their muscles. This is normal human reaction to the physical stress of a run. This is no difference to the mental pressure this pandemic has been causing. It is normal human reaction to feel sad, stressed, anxious or overwhelmed at times. The problem is not whether you should feel the pressure or not - rather it is about what you do when you are down so you can climb up again.

2. Review --- and lower your expectations. No matter how fed up and how quickly we want this to be over, it does not change the fact that this pandemic

has a marathon feel. Lower the expectations on yourself. Lower the targets you set yourself to do. It is okay if you need more time to complete certain tasks at home or at work. It is okay to not always cook perfect complete meals everyday. Try to accept that the journey continues, even without you sprinting at your maximum speed. This can make your journey a lot more tolerable and will allow you to plan better.

3. Focus on endurance not speed. Slow progress is still a progress. Reduce your speed, to conserve your energy, so you can run further distance. Prioritise your activities. Remember that you don’t have to do everything immediately and perfectly. Focus on the most important aspects of your life first. Practise saying, “No; Sorry I cannot do it

AL WASAT 124 ¿ Rabi' al-Awal 1443 ¿ October 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين األول‬1443 ‫ ¿ ربيع األول‬124 ‫الوسط‬

now, I will try again next time”.

4. Have a break when you need to. What matters in this pandemic marathon is getting to the finish line eventually, not how quickly you get there. You might feel more pain at the different stages along the way. Please look at yourself in the mirror and be honest with yourself. Being honest with yourself is a sign of tremendous selfcare. If you are burning out, then please stop and have a breather. What happens to a phone that is never charged? It will eventually STOP working, even if it is the most advanced phone. Certain things such as simple exercise, sleep routine, healthy meals, and meditations (including prayers with concentration) can power charge your mind and body. Also find other methods of self-care

that work for you. They don’t have to be big and expensive. Eating ice cream under the sun while enjoying the breeze might do it for some.

5. Look out for one another, and give support If you find your friends, families or strangers in this journey that need support, please stop for a moment and understand what they need. Do what you can to help. Remember it is about getting to the finish line in the end, not if you can get there first. Acts of kindness are among the best things you can do to give the marathon atmosphere a more gentle, enjoyable feel. This is on top of you helping someone else getting to the finish line. If it happens that you are struggling yourself, please ask for help and notify somebody else. You will always find people

who are willing to help. If you don’t say anything, unfortunately, sometimes no one will know that you need help. Most people by know realise that it is a marathon and will show sympathy if you seek help.

In summary, this COVID-19 pandemic is a marathon of journey especially for our mental health. There is nothing wrong with feeling the pressure. Slow progress is still a progress, and soon you can move faster again. Have a break when you need to. Listen to your body. There is a finish line for this journey, and we all want to try to get there. Support others and ask for support whenever needed. These acts of kindness will be so unforgettable on the other side of this pandemic.

Our best chance of seeing friends and family again, celebrating birthdays, travelling overseas and saving our economy is by getting the vaccine. I got the vaccine. It was to keep myself, my family and our community Safe. This has been hard for all of us. Vaccinations are the best and only way to safely get us out of lock down and keep people out of hospitals as the evidence clearly show that is the case. It’s free, it’s safe and it’s easy. The best vaccine you can get is the one you can get right now.

CESAR MELHEM MP • State Labor Member for Western Metropolitan Region • Parliamentary Secretary for Training and Skills

Together we can defeat this Virus. The pandemic has been really tough on many people. We all want to see our family and friends again, visit our favourite restaurants and get our kids back to school. If we all do our bit and get the Covid-19 vaccine, then we will be able to go back to doing the things we enjoy. I am really happy to have had both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine. I’m a breastfeeding mother and I wanted to know how the vaccine would affect me, so before I got vaccinated, I talked my concerns through with my doctor. If you’re feeling hesitant, you can do the same. Before a Covid-19 vaccine can be used in Australia, it has to pass very strict safety standards. The Covid-19 vaccines have also been used by hundreds of millions of people around the world. If you are vaccinated, you are much less likely to need to go to hospital and if you catch Covid-19, and you are much less likely to pass Covid-19 on to others. Anyone over the age of 12 can be vaccinated and vaccination is free for everyone, whether you are an Australian citizen or not. Please, go and get vaccinated. It will help protect you, your families and our community.

Covid study of healthcare workers reveals cracks in an overloaded system

A national survey of more than 6670 Australian frontline healthcare workers – asking the question: What did you find to be the main challenges that you faced during the (2020) pandemic? reveals that COVID has amplified the cracks in a system already under stress in terms of job satisfaction, workforce retention and patient care. The study, led by researchers at Victoria University and Monash University published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, arrives as the Australian

Medical Association releases modelling that predicts hundreds of beds in the nation’s hospitals could be permanently full of COVID-19 patients each day, leading to overcrowding in emergency departments and extended wait times for elective surgeries, as restrictions ease across NSW, Victoria and the ACT. “The study shows that the COVID-19 pandemic had added pressures to an already strained workplace and has created new stresses and challenges for our frontline healthcare workers including increased workloads, unfamiliar tasks outside their usual scope of work, disruption of established teams and rapidly changing procedures,” says lead author, Professor, Public Health, Karen Willis from Victoria University. According to the study leads, Professor Willis, Victoria University and A/Prof Natasha Smallwood from Monash University, even before the arrival of COVID-19, “some frontline healthcare workers described their work environments as “extreme” well before the pandemic, and their experiences of work during COVID-19 exacerbated work-life imbalance, impacted their personal lives, and presented a range of work-based challenges”. Professor Willis added, “The overriding message was that there is

a need for a safe workplace, where frontline healthcare workers feel valued and where there is a focus on retaining and supporting the workforce, which then translates into high quality patient care.” The data was collected as part of the Australian COVID-19 Frontline Healthcare Workers Study, an anonymous, online, national survey conducted between 27 August and 23 October 2020. The new study also highlights: • Healthcare workers struggling to balance work and home roles and responsibilities, over-stretched staff resources and increased workload • Patient care - Concerns about changes to the provision of patient care, particularly about compromised patient care; negotiating new restrictions on visitors • Job uncertainty, rapid changes to work practices and guidelines, and the unpredictability of these role and changed practices • Stress and anxiety and feeling unsafe at work

TOGETHER WE CAN

It’s coming up to two years since cases of the virus we now know as COVID-19 were first recorded. Since that time, several million people have tragically succumbed to the virus, others continue to suffer lingering symptoms, and so many of us across the world have lost loved ones. Our thoughts are with everyone who is experiencing any form of hardship due to the pandemic. There can be no doubt that COVID-19 is genuine threat to life. We’ve all seen it, either first-hand or through others. There is also no doubt that vaccination is our path out of this. Here in Australia and closer to home Victoria, vaccination rates in Victoria continue to climb, including in multicultural and multifaith communities. This is thanks to the incredible work of trusted community leaders and organisations, include Al Wasat magazine. They are leaders who have listened both to the science and their community’s concerns. They have had to share facts about COVID-19 that have not always been popular, but they’ve found their own way to deliver lifesaving health guidance with empathy. They have busted myths surrounding coronavirus – including vaccine misinformation – and supported their communities through six lockdowns. On behalf of the VMC, I thank all each and every leader, community representatives, business and faith leaders and all of you for this enormous effort. As members of their communities, we should listen to our trusted leaders and representatives. If you’re not vaccinated yet, it’s time to protect yourself and your family. It’s time to get our lives and our state back on track.

The past 18 months has been challenging for Victorians. While the pandemic has created physical distances between us, it has united us as we continue to work together and follow the rules. As police, we’ve had to adapt our responsibilities to keep the community safe during the pandemic. We look forward to be able to soon engage with our community at in-person events, which promote harmony and optimism. By protecting ourselves and each other, together we can get back to the things we love. #togetherwecan

The Australian Lebanese Independent Forum (ALIF) organised its first webinar on the 26th of September on the topic, ‘Lebanese abroad and their descendants: towards a new role in Lebanese politics’. One of the participants, Dr Paul Tabar, Director of the Institute for Migration Studies, pointed that for the first time, regardless of their professional background, religious or political views people in this “Entifada” 17th of October Struggle, were fighting together. And that is why a change should start from now. He also mentioned that the diaspora should be organised to give people in Lebanon a good model and motivation especially since many obstacles has made the protesters retreat. Such as: - Hezbollah and AMAL parties have used oppressive measures against the protestors - The coronavirus pandemic and the dramatic drop in the value of the national currency has -Made people focus solely on managing their daily life rather than participating in politics - Regional and international circumstances are not welcoming change sought after by the protestors (Syrian and Iranian influence) - Inability of protestors to form “one team” According to these reasons it is important to secure six seats allocated to the diaspora in the 2022 elections, to help the protestors and to be deeply involved in the 17th of October spirit. The main organizer of the webinar, Abdalla Abdalla, explained in Arabic and English the rules and conditions of elections in order to encourage interested Lebanese participants to vote. Lebanese non-residents on Lebanese soil can register by electronic registration, or by going to the nearest diplomatic mission by presenting an identity card, a residence card or a Lebanese passport showing their migration visa. In summary, they should simply visit the link: diasporavote.mfa.gov.lb.

I encourage everyone in the community to follow the advice of the respective governments and to get vaccinated – first and foremost for themselves and for their families. Next, for their colleagues and for the wider Australian community so that we can return to enjoying the things we love about this country – such as watching an AFL or AFLW game at a full stadium!

Nadine Rabah AFL Media Manager It is important that we know the facts, that we build resilience within our community to keep safe, and that we encourage everyone to get vaccinated. Getting vaccinated is the most important way you can protect yourself, your family and friends, and our wider community. All COVID vaccines have been wellresearched and are safe, free, and effective. To help us all return to the freedoms we enjoy, getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is the answer. It’s important to also get vaccinated to relieve our healthcare system and to help our frontline workers who are tirelessly working under such trying conditions to get us through this pandemic. COVID-19 is here to stay, so we must support each other to keep safe and get vaccinated. The City of Greater Dandenong, home to Australia’s most culturally diverse community, is truly unique with people from more than 150 different nations. We therefore have a responsibility to respect our cultural diversity and do all we can to keep each other safe so we can get back to doing all the things we love.

Cr Angela Long Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong

I encourage all Australians to roll up their sleeves! Protect yourselves and your family. Protect your friends and your communities. Together we can get back to watching footy at the ‘G and playing cricket on the beach. Together we can get back to celebrating birthdays and weddings and holidays with those we hold closest.”

Paving The Way Forward For Public Housing Residents Public housing residents will benefit from a range of health and wellbeing projects, thanks to a Victorian Government program that is ensuring residents lead the way in decisions impacting their homes and communities. Minister for Housing Richard Wynne announced 25 community-led projects supporting residents across the Flemington and North Melbourne public housing precincts would soon begin with funding through the $200,000 Paving the Way Forward Community Grants program.

Projects include: • $10,000 to deliver a pop-up after-school play program to help with recovery from the social, emotional and developmental impacts of COVID-19 lockdowns and remote learning • $4,750 for the Resident Skills Development Project, which will offer nationally-recognised training, credentials and valuable volunteer experience to provide pathways to employment • $4,400 for a digital literacy course

for refugee and asylum seeker women to fill the education gap and provide students with practical skills to confidently live, learn, and work. A new resident action group at the Flemington and North Melbourne precincts will help residents develop solutions to issues identified as priorities by the community, including the COVID-19 response, communications, maintenance, improved community spaces and the delivery of new and improved housing in Flemington. Community development workers

will be employed through community partner organisations in Flemington and North Melbourne to improve access to services and enable residents to be more involved in decisions about their homes and neighbourhood. The community grants are part of the $7.5 million Paving the Way Forward Program, which is designed to assist public housing residents to achieve improvements in health, education and employment.

Muslim creative launches new online store for children’s books and entertainment Parents searching for books and games for kids books that highlight cultural diversity need look no further than littleglobalpeople.com, a newly launched online store developed by children’s book author and Muslim creative, George Green. The Melbourne-based author of the Childhood Champions fictional children’s book series - which follows a group of eight-year-old friends from culturally diverse backgrounds who live in Green’s own hometown, New York City - says he spent Melbourne’s rolling lockdowns working on his latest project. “The last eighteen months have been challenging for us all, yes, but the extra time at home has given me the opportunity to create the products I’m selling on the website and build the website itself,” said Mr Green. “Creating these products and writing the books are a passion-project for me. Being AfricanAmerican and a father myself, centering people

of colour in books and games is a huge priority. I want my daughter to have access to books, colouring books and card games where she can see not only herself but people who look like her Dad or her cousins, aunts and grandparents reflected in these activities.” Green is also a passionate youth worker who completed his bachelor’s degree in English and psychology at Auburn University, Alabama. It was back home in the US where he discovered his love of working with disadvantaged youth. Since moving to Melbourne in 2015, he has worked with young Australians in the justice system and those who are otherwise affected by drugs, alcohol, homelessness and unemployment. He’s a familiar face in many of Melbourne’s Islamic schools where he regularly undertakes incursions to primary and secondary schools (Islamic or otherwise), promoting literacy and presenting programs to students focusing on the Childhood Champions book series.

He is also a youth motivational speaker signed to the Booked Out Speakers agency and is looking forward to this outreach work when lockdown conditions have been lifted. In the meantime, Green continues to work on new products for littleglobalpeople.com, endeavoring to leave a lasting impact in the literacy space and ensuring that future generations of culturally diverse kids will continue to see themselves in books, games and entertainment. THE RESPONSE OF THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY TO THE PANDEMIC Bilal Cleland dunk1689@gmail.com

Lack of Faith in Authority One lesson which we have learnt through the pandemic is that there is a gulf between a section of the Muslim community and the authorities, be they political authorities or health authorities. Many years of the War on Terrorism with its accompanying vilification of Islam and Muslims, has harmed relations. The atmosphere has been so poisoned that ill-informed ABC commentators just a few weeks ago were still talking about the great struggle within Islam about the acceptability of terrorism. The penchant of white supremacist evangelicals in the Old South for guns, violence and insurrection has never been portrayed as a struggle within Christianity between the forces advocating terrorism and those advocating peace. It is generally accepted by all but the extremists that Christianity does not encompass such fringe elements but Islam apparently does.

We now have young people in their 20s, who make up a large proportion of the Muslim community, who have grown up in an atmosphere of hate and vilification. They have only known the post9/11 world. They are well aware that even the moderate President Obama was sending drones to murder villagers in Afghanistan and Iraq and that innocent prisoners, sold to the USA by treacherous Afghans, were rotting away in Guantanamo Bay. They know about Abu Ghraib. They know how their mothers and sister have been insulted for wearing hijab. They are acutely aware of the style of reporting mentally disturbed Muslims who undertake violent acts as dangerous rational terrorists while white supremacists bomb makers and thugs are always mentally ill. Even ASIO, which has a chequered history in dealing with sections of the Muslim community, has called for less anti-Muslim reporting of terrorist incidents. The comments which appeared on Senator James Paterson’s Facebook page regarding the recent unwise AFIC proposal to run a webinar including Taliban representatives, continued that style of vilification. Although most Muslims report a high level of wellbeing, living in Australia, one finding of the 2015 study by Riaz Hassan was the exception. The response to ‘How safe you feel’ revealed that Muslims feel less safe than the Australian population as a whole.

AL WASAT 124 ¿ Rabi' al-Awal 1443 ¿ October 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ تشرين األول‬1443 ‫ ¿ ربيع األول‬124 ‫الوسط‬

A Profile of the Muslims There are some indicators as to why Australian Muslims, 38% of whom were born here, have reason to feel alienated from the mainstream, despite this general feeling of wellbeing. Although their level of educational attainment compares favourably with that of the general population, they are less likely to be able to obtain employment, especially if they are young. “The unemployment rate of 7% of Australian Muslims in the labour force was almost double that of all Australians.” [Hassan] When they achieve employment they are less likely to have high status positions and “Muslims receive significantly less economic return for their level of education than other Australians.” As is noted in “A Demographic, Social and Economic Profile of Muslims in Australia 2015,” prepared by Professor Riaz Hassan: “In the Australian labour market applicants with Middle Eastern names are less likely to be given an interview than applicants with identical resumes but Anglo-Saxon names. The discrimination against those with Middle Eastern names was greater than the discrimination against those with Italian or Indigenous names.” According to the NSW Corrective Services 2013 Census, Muslims comprise 3.2% of the NSW population but 9.3% of the state prison population. As of 27 April 2015 according to Corrections Victoria, while 2.9% of

Victorians were Muslim, 8% of prisoners in Victoria were Muslims. There is some reason to expect that the situation will improve with increased political involvement from the Muslim community in those electorates in which it has a growing influence. “Another notable feature is that the Muslim population of certain state and Commonwealth electorates is increasing at a greater rate than the Muslim population as a whole.” [Hassan]

The Influence of the Anti-vaxxers This general low status position of Muslims in the community, combined with the relative youth of the population, growing up under suspicion since 9/11, might indicate why a sizeable proportion of the community was prepared to give credence to antiestablishment individuals who argued against vaccination and proclaimed the COVID-19 pandemic to be a manipulative fraud. Although white supremacist organisations and individuals led in organising the “Freedom” protests against health regulations and the police, several young Muslim men took part in them, convinced that they were correct. One of the most jarring messages conveyed during this time was the inability or the reluctance of so many religious leaders in the northern suburbs of Melbourne to stand against these ignorant voices in the community. The Hume LGA contains many mosques and religious centres but only one mosque, Meadow

Heights Mosque, established a vaccination centre. The Islamic Museum in Darebin and the Newport Islamic Centre both did well in this regard, the latter carrying out 11,000 vaccinations in a month. The Virgin Mary Mosque, Australia Light Foundation(Tottenham) and Tarneit Mosque also played a significant role in providing vaccinations. Other imams ran Webinars to inform their jemaat. Despite these good examples, the fact that so many imams were intimidated by the loudest voices has left a cloud over them which may never disperse. The main attempt to overcome the conspiracy theories promulgated by the “Freedom” protesters and their Muslim allies was carried out by female Muslim doctors, notable Dr Sara Marzouk and Dr Umber Rind who fearlessly braved insults and vilification to tell the truth. Of particular note was also Kerim Buday of ICMG and Ilim College. His report of the video shown to Muslim leaders as a result of the huge numbers of our community appearing in ICUs and on ventilators, helped wake up the community to the terrible danger of remaining unvaccinated. Hesitancy in Hume fell away quite quickly as infections raged, and vaccinations went up from 40% to 80% in about a month. This pandemic has not only awakened people of goodwill to the lethal inequalities which exist in our society, and the shameful degree of political manipulation in vaccine distribution, it has also awakened the Muslim community to the danger of unqualified individuals asserting leadership and exercising control within our Ummah.

We have all been living through this pandemic for almost 2 years almost like in a daze. Expecting things to improve, waiting, hoping for this to end. It hasn’t. But what we all need to think about is how far we have come. We have witnessed a new virus ravage the world, cause millions and deaths and long-term illness. We have witnessed how quickly the scientific community can come together and achieve great things in record time when the necessity, urgency and motivation is there. We saw right in front of our eyes multiple vaccines released which have helped slow the speed of spread

and the number of deaths due to Covid-19. Many of us have been tested in our own ways, some more than others. I’ve seen the Muslim community come together and support one another; I’ve seen some of us drift apart. It’s been a truly testing time for us all. Our Muslim communities especially in Sydney and Melbourne were hit very hard with Covid and we seem to have had many of the Covid-19 infections and deaths. Whenever calamity befalls us, we must ask, what can I learn from this? How has this tested me? How can

I improve as a person and how can I better serve others? We only have a limited time on earth. Many of us get caught up with the world, its demands, studies, achievements, work family etc. We need to remember that these things are fragile and temporary. What we have learned is how important our family, friends and loved ones are. In difficult times we saw who was there for us and who was not. Although we had our differences, we battled misinformation and conspiracy theories, I’m so proud of how resilient

our diverse Muslim communities are. Despite all the fear mongering and divisive rhetoric many have understood now why we need to be there for each other. When we start to work together instead of on our own, we grow stronger. Our voices and our needs are amplified, and we can get our messages across. We also know how disproportionately we have been treated by those in power. We must ensure we work towards making sure this does not happen again. We clearly know now the importance of essential workers who live in the most disadvantaged areas. We need to leverage that in the future. Remember we started 2019 with bushfires, the pandemic then hit. We had the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 ignite a fire in some of us who know racism and inequality is also an issue for the Muslim communities in Australia to reflect on and to work towards more inclusive spaces for our Black brothers and sisters. We all became more aware of our eternal gratitude and

indebtedness that we owe to the Aboriginal people, the rightful owners of this land. I have certainly noticed a shift in attitudes to these issues in the past 18 months. As someone who always felt like they did not officially belong to any group in the community, I’ve seen how many of us have come together, regardless of our differences. It’s made me reflect that • Together we are stronger. • Together we are protected. • Together we can better support each other as we move forward. • Together we can make a difference. • Together we have.

TOGETHER WE CAN

I have witnessed first-hand the toll COVID-19 has had in our community, as many friends have suffered immensely from this pandemic. Nothing sits heavier in my heart than seeing my loved ones’ health at risk & their suffering. I have been helping those affected by providing essentials to families in quarantine, assisting people to find their closest vaccination centers, sharing information via social media & creating a network of volunteers to help with these services. I wholeheartedly support the “Together we can” campaign & am committed to provide any required support to safeguard the health of our community.

HALAL

37

HALAL ISSUE

PROHIBITED CATEGORIES OF

FOOD AND DRINKS IN ISLAM PART I Through maintaining a balance between the necessities of the body and the soul, Islam has placed simple nutritional rules one must follow. Islam recommends to its followers that they eat all that is pure and wholesome, earnt through halal earnings. The divine principle of Islam is that which is good is halal (lawful), and that which is harmful is haram (prohibited). Allah, the Creator of everything, knows what is good for us and He (swt) therefore declares it to be lawful.

Islam teaches us that all food and drinks are halal, except for those that are explicitly mentioned to be haram. Islam as a divine religion, which forbids certain categories of food and drinks as well as certain sources of food, its means and methods of earning. The unlawful food is specifically mentioned in many verses in the Quran, such as the following verse: “Prohibited for you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and animals dedicated to other than God; also, the flesh of animals strangled, killed violently, killed by a fall, gored to death, mangled by wild animals—except what you rescue, and animals sacrificed on altars; and the practice of drawing lots. For

it is immoral...” (Quran 5:3). Allah (swt) also said: “O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, idolatry, and divination are abominations of Satan’s doing. Avoid them, so that you may prosper”. (Quran 5:90) Based on the above two verses and others, as well as many hadiths of our Prophet (pbuh), all food and drinks that are pure and clean are permitted for consumption by Muslims, except for the following categories, including any products derived from them or even contaminated with them: • Dead animals or carrion, • Flowing or congealed blood, • Swine and all byproducts (products and ingredients derived from

ICCV ISLAMIC CO-ORDINATING COUNCIL OF VICTORIA

swine), • Meat on which the name of any deity, person, or thing is invoked other than the name of Allah, and the animals which are slaughtered without mentioning the name of God on them, • Intoxicants of all types, including alcohol and drugs, • Carnivorous animals with fangs, such as tigers, wolves etc… • Birds with sharp claws (birds of prey) such as eagles, owls, vultures etc… • Land or amphibious animals such as frogs, snakes etc… This may also include halal items that have been contaminated or mixed with haram products. Based on the two main sources of Islam; Quran

Dr Bekim Hasani Head of Shariah Affairs,

ICCV

and the Hadith, as well as the explanations and commentary of Muslim scholars, halal food laws are formed.

Dead animals or carrion Allah (swt) has forbidden the consumption of the meat of an animal or a fowl which dies from natural causes, and that has not been slaughtered or hunted by men. The category of dead animals includes animals or fowl which die from: strangulation, from a blow, from a fall, by being gored, or which are partially eaten by wild beasts. There is a chance that an animal could die from the shock of stunning before it is properly

slaughtered. The meat of such dead animals is also not acceptable for Muslim consumption. From a scientific point of view, carrion and dead animals are unfit for human consumption due to the decaying process which leads to the formation of chemicals being harmful to humans. Islam teaches us to treat ALL animals with compassion during production, their handling, their transport, and their slaughter. There is a rich tradition of the Prophet Mohammad’s (pbuh), which shows the concern he had for animals, found in both the Hadith and Sunna, and Islam provides considerable support for the importance of maintaining animal welfare by all.

Islamic Museum vaccination hub drives uptake in local community Over 1,100 people were vaccinated at a pop-up hub at the Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA), with the Museum’s Founder and Director Moustafa Fahour OAM declaring it a success. “To develop a combined local response with the Museum, Preston Mosque, the Department of Health, Your Community Health and Banyule Community Health,

and then to actually mobilise in less than two weeks is testament to what can be achieved when organisations are committed to an urgent and shared cause,” said Mr Fahour. The pop-up hub, which operated from Tuesday 28 September to Saturday 2 October was opened in response to overwhelming demand from the community for a vaccination venue centred around cultural

Ms Al-Madhoun’s Year12 Chemistry – Pasco Vale Girls College In and out of lockdown, interrupted learning, mental health struggles for many students, parents struggles to accommodate with remote learning needs and working from home or/and other parenting needs. This has been the case with us Victorians for the past couple of school years. As a school teacher I urge all of you parents to help protect our community by getting vaccinated and getting your child vaccinated. We want to guarantee a continuity of learning for our children. Let us get our students back to a normal safe and happy school year during which they can learn on site, attend off-

site excursions and socialise with their school mates and develop their social skills. COVID-19 has hit our community hard in the last eighteen months. Lockdown has impacted so many aspects of our lives and indeed; the instability of the in and out of lockdown has changed so many things with the way we view the world and the way we interact with each other. But if there is one thing we learned from this pandemic, it is that we are all one community here in Victoria. This infection spreads very viciously. It has taken away so many loved ones and it has tested so many families very hard. We need to feel safe again. We need to get our sense of normality and

be able to enjoy a COVIDfree Melbourne, COVID- Free schools and hospitals and enjoy going out with family and friends and visiting those whom we love. The only way by which we can achieve this is by getting our family vaccinated. Let us all work together towards one goal of protecting our community and ensure a safe school environment for our children. If you have not yet booked your vaccine, it is time to do that right now.

GIFT OF KINDNESS

BOYS BETTER By Jamilah Samian

www.coolmumsuperdad.com

Many years ago, I was one of those who think that boys are born to give parents a perpetual headache. Why not? My sons fought in the car, didn’t do their homework until the last minute, never noticed the glasses and dirty dishes in the sink and messed up their wardrobe the very next day after I tidied it up. I was running a SOHO (small office home office), didn’t have a maid and was exhausted by the end of each day, trying to manage a household with boys who never seemed to listen to my instructions. One day, however, I noticed that my eldest son, then ten, had washed his plate after lunch without prompting. I summoned him downstairs and down he came. “Thank you for washing your plate,” I smiled and gave him a pat on his back. “That’s it?” he asked, perplexed. “Yeah,” I replied. “Why did you ask?”

“Well, I thought you are upset with me about something,” he said and gave one of his rare spontaneous smiles. My conscience crept in. Have I done all I could to understand him better? What could I do to see that smile more often? I thought long and hard. Suppose it’s the way I have been treating my children that makes them the way they are? What if I change the way I say and do things? Would that make a difference? I decided to give it a try. Come Saturday, it was time to check their rooms. “How about I make a detailed list of the things you boys need to do to tidy up your room?” I asked. They agreed, albeit with a little look of surprise. Normally I would have given a one-liner: “Tidy up your room.” An hour later, I went in to collect the list. Clothes folded. Check. Toys collected and put into toy box. Check. Beds made. Check. Dirty clothes put

into laundry basket. Check. Wonderful, I thought. That evening, it was time to check their school work. It was at the tip of my tongue to tell my eightyear-old boy: “Your work is untidy.” Instead, I turned to a particular page that was neater than the rest which I had seen earlier. “I like this,” I said. “Do you think you could do it again?” How he beamed! I shall never forget the look on his face that night. I began to dig deeper. Boys’ brains, I learnt, develop differently from girls. Another difference is that the left and right sides of the brain tend to form fewer connections in a boy. As a result, the right side of a boy’s brain is richer in internal connections (a plus point for boys) but is not as well-connected to the left side. This means that it could be a challenge for boys to do things well which need both sides of the brain, like talking about feelings and

solving problems through quiet introspection and not via the physical way. It explains why boys have a tendency to get physical when they get involved in an argument while girls tend to argue in a verbal style. When this happens, he needs to be shown how to resolve the issue at hand in a verbal, courteous manner. Does this mean that boys are inferior? Definitely not. It just helps to explain some practical but temporary difficulties that boys have in different stages of growth and what to do about them. For instance, boys don’t work as neatly as girls in school but they are usually more task oriented. Some boys have difficulty getting organised and will invariably have messy bedrooms, desks and leave clothes lying around but they need stepby-step advice. Studies have shown there are some areas where girls develop sooner and other areas where boys develop sooner; for example,

girls have a more acute sense of hearing while boys show more advanced spatial intelligence at an earlier age. But these are tendencies and are not true of every boy and girl. Some of these differences are attributed to the way boys’ and girls’ brains develop as discussed above. The average boy also goes through a testosterone cycle that triggers significant changes. At four, he’s active and boyish. Around thirteen, he undergoes rapid growth and disorientation. By fourteen, he’s into testing limits and breaking through to early manhood. Each boy is different, but it is the testosterone that gives him growth spurts and drives him to be active. From Cool Mum Super Dad. FESTIVAL

Australia’s first Virtual Australian Muslim Writers Festival

By Ozge Sevindik Alkan The Right Pen Collective, an organisation with the mission of making books as common as Vegemite, held Australia’s first Virtual Australian Muslim Writers Festival in September 2021. The news of the festival went viral on social media with the poster of the event with all the Muslim writer’s photos on it being shared across all platforms. The reactions varied from “Are these really all Muslim?” to “Why hasn’t been done before at this scale?” The festival attracted attention from Muslim and non-Muslim organisations. State writing organisations, diverse creative organisations, and various grass roots organisations shared the news of the festival. The Guardian commissioned an article from the organisers to write about what characterises Muslim writing in Australia, which sparked a lively debate online. Randa Abdel-Fattah opened the eightday long festival. Her debut novel published in 2005, Does my head look big in this, was the first young adult novel featuring a Muslim protagonist in the Western world. She likened the Muslim Literary scene to a giant jigsaw puzzle where each author puts a piece on. She said “sometimes there’s a lot of pressure on that one piece to represent the entire puzzle and that’s what we need to change.” The writers echoed similar challenges

in their writing with Muslims picking on their writing for not being Muslim enough and non-Muslim readers finding it too Muslim. Festival organiser and author of Hijabi Girl Ozge Sevindik Alkan said emphasised the need for Muslims to tell their own stories and for non-Muslim writers to step away from writing from the point of view of a Muslim. Another dilemma writers face is their creativity being boxed into writing about specific topics. Poet Maryam Azam, author poetry collection The Hijab Files, commented that since there are so precious few Muslim writers being published, they feel obligated to write from a Muslim voice. American author Ausma Zehanat Khan said that she’s consciously a Muslim Writer rather than a writer who happens to be Muslim. The festival organisers decided not to include a panel on diversity since many Muslim writers only get invited to festivals to talk about diversity. The festival’s aim was to celebrate Muslim writers and all that they contribute to the Australian literary Space. The panels were organised by the age group the authors wrote for, a large portion of the festival was dedicated to children’s authors. This was also the age group that had the largest number of self-published authors. Picture book author, Amal Abu-Eid, found that the Muslim stories she needed to tell were too urgent to go through a traditional publishing process, so she chose to self-publish. Other authors chose to self-publish to

have the control over of the narrative of the story they told. Melati Lum whose series protagonist Ayesha Dean is a globetrotting super sleuth. The editors requested her to write more about religious struggles of Ayesha, instead of her sleuthing adventures. That wasn’t the story Lum wanted to tell, so she published her own books. Other authors had positive experiences with their publishers. Huda Hayek, author of Huda and Me, found her publishers keen to support her in writing authentically Muslim characters whether it was writing about characters who make wudu before salah, or including common phrases Muslims use. Rawah Arja, author of the F-team, Rawah said she first started writing to please others. Her publisher asked to write it from her own experience instead and she produced her best writing. Young adult author of Sunburnt Veils, Sara Haghdoosti, wrote her book because she could not see the vibrant and diverse community she lived in was not being reflected in the TV or literature. She said, “we were seeing some of the same characters, over and over again.” The festival organised by Muslims and with only Muslim writers provided a safe space for the participants talk freely about their religion. Waleed Aly who co-authored Bachar Houli’s autobiography closed the festival. He said people spend too much time talking and thinking about an Islamic identity, but not enough about Islamic practise. He gave the example of

Bachar Houli and how his Islamic practise embodied his football career. Amani Haydar, author of The Mother Wound, and Michael Mohammed Ahmad, author of The other half of you, spoke on the adult contemporary panel and emphasized how their books are so much about love which goes against the narrative of Arab Muslims in the media. Over five hundred people virtually attended the festival’s nine panels all emceed by emerging writer and The Right Pen Collective co-founder Annie McCAnn. McCann is an experienced emcee and she found emceed this event a privilege and a powerful experience. She said “I am so grateful to have had this wonderful opportunity and hope this is just the beginning with many more experiences just like this to come, InsyaAllah” All the participating author’s books are available for purchase from the festival partner and independent Sydney bookstore Better Read Than Dead. https://www.betterreadevents.com/ writersfestival.

SISTAHUB VACCINATION CAMPAIGN

SistaHub is made up of a group of Melbourne-based Muslim women hailing from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds united by a common cause – ‘preserving the wellbeing of Muslim women by catering to their specific needs and addressing their concerns’. The team have launched a vaccination campaign recently that has gained tremendous community

support and positive media attention. The campaign aims to address the very valid concerns of Muslim women but to also offer solutions, by organising two vaccination hubs for Muslim women. Currently, hubs are located in Hume and Wyndham, and will be womenonly spaces that cater to religious and cultural sensitivities. All staff present will only include women. The team have aimed to provide

bicultural volunteers to assuage concerns and answer questions. Other hubs will be established in various locations in due course. Bookings can be made via the SistaHub website, which also offers insights into the campaign’s focus and other valuable information. The SistaHub team are proud to be affiliated with the values of compassion, integrity and human welfare, rather than with a

particular organisation. The team aim to branch out into other areas of community need and interest once the vaccination campaign concludes. SistaHub is a great example of how much momentum and traction can be gained when community advocates band together at short notice for a common cause. For information and bookings, visit SistaHub.org and follow their social media pages.

The gathering 2012 Wheat, henna, acrylic, canvas on table Statement Fatima Killeen The onset of the Pandemic restrictions and lockdowns over the last eighteen months have confined our lives, limited all kind of life opportunities, day-to-day interactions and celebrations of Togetherness. The Social distancing notion has become dominant in all levels of relationships. This social phenomenon is an emotive to contemplate the role of spirituality and religious functions in reacting to this challenging new condition, particularly the physical, the spiritual well-being and mental health. I believe that the spiritual and religious practices give meaning and purpose in establishing a supportive community. “The gathering” is the outcome

from several workshops with the Muslim women in Canberra. My idea is nurtured by the gathering of women back home during the harvest season. This time is usually celebrated as women get together to help each other and prepare wheat to make bread for their community.

The hands prints are unified with an Islamic floral motif, the eight corners star; the khatam is the centre piece. It lies underneath the wheat, the most revered grain and the most generous provision in the Muslim world. This work is born straight from the women’s community workshop; it remembers their own

THE IMPORTANCE OF A Hearing of death is always hard. Debilitating when it’s a family member. Often, grief obscures our focus and judgement, making the practical elements like organising the burial and settling of affairs for the deceased, challenging. But when there is the absence of a legal will, the process can become exceedingly difficult. Recently, we were notified of a revert brother who died suddenly. He was unmarried and had a strained relationship with his family, who weren’t Muslim.

He had not organised a will prior to his death and his burial rested on the shoulders of his parents, who wanted him cremated. National Zakat Foundation (NZF) and our service

partners were approached to advocate for an Islamic burial. After a series of negotiations, the family finally agreed for us to take over, if we bore the costs of the burial. And with that,

it was settled. We were fortunate because they agreed. But it was in their right not to, in which case we wouldn’t have been able to take the case any further. We are living in the most uncertain times. Because of the pandemic, deaths are on the rise. We are seeing severe, even fatal symptoms, sweep across the community in such a short span of time. Recovery is far from a certainty. So many of us are not familiar with the Islamic rulings regarding a Wasiyyah (Islamic Will). Misconception that it’s only about inheritance but it’s a lot more than this; Islamic burial, custody of children, sadaqah jaariya options. We should also break misconceptions that people might have that you can simply hand write a Will and say we should follow the Shariyah, this will not be accepted in Australian courts, hence the importance of an Islamic Will that’s legally recognised in Australia. Our team at National Zakat Foundation (NZF) are committed to assisting

families in our community who have lost a loved one, but the circumstances aren’t always straightforward. Particularly during the pandemic, we are facing issues such as having to negotiate with nonMuslim family members; or reassuring families who have lost a loved one so suddenly that they are under the strain of not being able to afford the costs of a burial; or trying to make arrangements for a burial of a brother or sister who is alone in Australia with immediate family who are overseas and unable to enter the country because of border restrictions. TOGETHER WE CAN, along with our service partners, help you in the process of setting up your Wassiyah according to your wishes, while making sure it is compliant with Islamic Shariah and Australian law. An Islamic will is one thing that you can control during these uncertain times. Let NZF help you have peace of mind; you can contact us at
