Students who take Honors courses receive an extra 1.87 credit per course, per semester, for grades of “C” or higher. This is computed and averaged at the semester and an Honors GPA is reported as well as a regular GPA. Be Virtuous athletes’ families into the program in a meaningful way. “The letter ceremony was so special. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room,” said Jeannie O’Dell, mom to Lindsey O’Dell ’18. “I know that it took a lot of courage for the girls to get up in front of everyone and read their letter. It was so nice to see the girls show such emotion as they thanked their mothers. I think the ceremony showed all the girls on the team that it is okay to show your parents how much you love and appreciate them.”
In a fast-paced world filled with text messages and “snaps,” the written letter has truly become a long-lost art. Through Althoff Catholic’s new Sports Leader program, which is based on the four pillars of virtue, ceremony, mentoring and Catholic identity, our student athletes are asked to write a letter to their mothers for presentation in front of the team at a mid -season “Letters to Mom Ceremony.” In this story, we continue to follow the progress of the girls’ soccer team with the Sports Leader program by sharing the experiences of the O’Dells and the Jacksons with the “Letters to Mom Ceremony.” “The Sports Leader program has impacted me by drawing two very important things in my life together, my faith and soccer,” said Amanda Jackson ‘18. Introduced for the first time at the beginning of the spring sports season, the girls’ soccer coaches and team have embraced every aspect of the Sports Leader program. The girls and coaches agree that the program has drawn the team closer together because of the opportunity to tie faith and virtue into something they are all so passionate about. “The activities and discussions we do through the weekly virtues helps us represent our school and our faith on the soccer field in a new way,” said Amanda. “One of the weekly virtues was ‘other-centered.’ This virtue made me think of others’ feelings and their situations before mine. The virtue taught me to think before I speak because you never know what is going on in another person’s life.” The virtue of the week is the thread that ties the program together throughout the season. The two ceremonies offer opportunities to incorporate
Lindsey O’Dell appreciated the opportunity to share her letter with mom as much as her mom appreciated receiving the letter. “My mom is my best friend and I look up to her in everything I do. She is the strongest, kindest, most selfless person I know, and she is the best role model. As I mature, I find myself becoming more like her in my faith and in my everyday life.” Amanda’s mom, Rebecca Jackson, felt honored to be part of the ceremony. “Some of the letters made us cry and others made us laugh,” said Rebecca. “I do not get to make it out to many of Amanda’s games because of health issues. I was truly blessed to participate in this new tradition at Althoff Catholic. I loved my letter.” The opportunity to share a letter with her mother also meant a lot to Amanda. “I am not always the most sentimental person to my mom,” said Amanda. “I am not always sure she knows how much she means to me. I feel as this really hit home and showed her how much I love her.” At Althoff Catholic we consider ourselves blessed to teach not only outstanding academics, but life’s most important lessons. “By fostering faith and virtue in our students we are truly teaching the whole person and that is a real gift,” said Principal Dave Harris. “I am excited to see more of our athletic teams adopt this program in the way that girls’ soccer has. I am also excited about the 18-mintue Virtue Period we have added into our academic day this year. It is important that all of our students are able to benefit from having these important virtues in the forefront of what we do at our school on a daily basis.”

Be Creative FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS At Althoff Catholic we have many opportunities for students to shine in the creative arts. Through our music, performing and fine arts classes and clubs your child can grow and express themselves in new ways. Below are a few examples of what we offer. Crusader Innovations Show Choir is an elite group who performs musical shows for area schools, civic groups, and parish clubs, and competes in established contests throughout the state. The group has also traveled to festivals in New York, Orlando, and the Smokey Mountains. Major events each year are the Quincy Show Case of Excellence in March and the McKendree University Midwest National Competition in April. Membership requires an interest in performance, a desire to sing and dance or play an instrument. There is also a need for a backstage crew which includes costumes, set and prop design and construction, and a technical staff for sound and lighting. Performance Arts Club is open to any student interested in drama and theater. Continued membership involves maintaining passing grades in classwork, responsible student behavior, attendance and participation in required rehearsals, practices, and set construction, as well as the privilege to join International Thespian Troupe #5554. If you have a positive attitude and enjoy entertaining others, the Performance Arts Club may be the group for you! At least two plays are performed throughout the year. These include a spring musical and small musicals and comedies in the fall. There is also a need for a backstage crew which includes costumes, set and prop design and construction, and a technical staff for sound and lighting. The Speech Team competes in area speech contests as members of The Greater St. Louis Speech League and the Illinois High School Association Individual Events and Performance- in- the- Round Program. Be Embraced families to Open House and later hosted them for a Crusader for a Day visit. “I am beyond happy that my passion for Althoff could transfer to Kalia and encourage her to become a part of our family,” said Jordan. “I was seriously touched when I was told how greatly I had influenced Kalia’s decision to come to Althoff. I can’t wait to see her do the same for other incoming freshmen now that she’s a student ambassador as well.” Choosing the right high school can be overwhelming for students and their families. Will it be easy to find friends with similar interests? Are there many opportunities to play sports or join clubs? Is it the best place to prepare for college and for life? How are the school’s ACT scores? How much do students typically get offered in scholarships for college? With so many things to consider, the decision can be rather daunting. Althoff Catholic Student Ambassadors are here to help make this decision easier for students and their families. The newly revamped Student Ambassador Program entails a highly competitive application process requiring students to submit an essay, participate in an interview and provide two references. Applications then go before a committee of faculty and administration for review and selection. Each student renews his or her commitment to the program annually by signing a document indicating their intentions to continue upholding the standards and expectations of being an Ambassador. “My goal is to limit membership to around 50 students,” said Mrs. Jeffers, Student Ambassador Moderator. “Mr. Harris has high expectation for all of our students, but we hold our Ambassadors to an even higher standard. With a group of 50 I am able to get to know the students and help them develop the necessary interpersonal and leadership skills to be a successful Student Ambassador.” Freshmen, Kalia and James, chose to attend Althoff Catholic in large part because of the experiences they had with Student Ambassadors at recruiting events such as Open House, Entrance Exam and Freshman Registration. Coming from Columbia, Kalia did not know many people considering Althoff Catholic High School. “When I attended Open House, I was greeted by Jordan, an extremely helpful and positive Student Ambassador. She showed me around the Althoff campus and as soon as the tour was over, I knew that I wanted to be that same helpful and inviting example to future students,” said Kalia. “The process of becoming a freshman and ultimately deciding on Althoff Catholic really opened my eyes to how crucial every detail is in the selection process. Student Ambassadors bridge the numerous gaps that exist beyond curriculums, brochures and meeting faculty and staff.” James’ family gave him the opportunity to explore several high schools before making his final decision. “I had the choice of three great schools,” said James. “Two all-boys schools in St. Louis and Althoff Catholic. I ended up choosing Althoff because of my Crusader for a Day visit. Althoff felt like a family. While the St. Louis schools had a good reputation, they definitely did not feel as student-friendly as Althoff.” James’ parents are delighted he ended up choosing Althoff Catholic and can already tell he made the right decision! “For James to come home smiling every day and talking about how much he likes school and all of his teachers, is absolutely amazing for us as parents,” said James’ mom, Barb. Elise ‘19 – From Chicago to the Metro East
Jack attended grade school at St. Teresa in Belleville. Following in the footsteps of his older sister, he decided a single-sex school in St. Louis would be the best fit for him. Jack enjoyed his classes and the school as a whole. At the beginning of his sophomore year, having to wake up early and having a 35 minute commute to school began to wear on him. “I was tired,” said Jack. “It is not easy to get involved in extracurricular activities or to get together with friends when you live so far way from your school.” A lot of Jack’s friends from St. Teresa were at Althoff Catholic, so he felt a sense of belonging almost immediately. “I love the smaller school atmosphere. The teachers and students are very friendly,” said Jack.
Elise moved to the Metro East from the Chicago area for her father’s new job. The family considered a total of four schools before deciding on Althoff Catholic. “We didn’t have a lot of time to visit schools, so we relied on the information online to learn more about our options,” said Elise. After their visit, the family felt confident that the small school environment would allow for more one-on-one attention from teachers. “The thing I like best about Althoff Catholic is the friendly environment. At my old school there were more cliques and groups did not mix. It was harder to make friends. Althoff Catholic is not like that. By the end of my first week, I felt like I fit in and had already made great friends.”

SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT: St. Thomas Aquinas Academic Excellence Scholarship: This scholarship, which is made available to the incoming freshman class of 2020, is a 50% reduction in tuition and is renewable for all four years as long as the student continues to meet the criteria. Students must have maintained an “A” average throughout both of their 7 th and 8th grade years; score in the 95th percentile on the Althoff Catholic High School Placement exam (a Nationally Standardized Test) and maintain a minimum of an “A” average each year. Admission Steps First Saturday of December 8th Grade Entrance Exam 7th Grade Practice Entrance Exam For 8th graders, the Entrance Exam helps inform admission decisions and establishes the courses to be taken freshman year. It is also a tool used to determine the recipients of numerous scholarships awarded based on entrance exam results. For 7th graders, the Practice Entrance Exam offers the opportunity to assess where a student currently stands academically and what they can focus on in their remaining junior high years to better prepare for a college preparatory high school experience. January Transcript Requests - Non-Catholic grade school students: parents must contact their child’s grade school to request that 7th and 8th grade transcripts, standardized test results and most recent physical be forwarded to Althoff Catholic. For Catholic grade school students, Althoff Catholic is able to request these documents on your behalf. Administration Evaluations - Principals and 8th grade teachers from Catholic grade schools meet with Althoff Catholic Administration to discuss placement test scores and course recommendations. Admission Decisions - Letters for admission decisions will be mailed at the end of January. February/March Freshman Registration - Registration is scheduled by appointment on February 20th or 22nd. Parents and students attend a scheduled interview and register for their courses. Scholarship & Tuition Assistance - Information on select scholarships will be available at registration. Also available will be information on tuition assistance through FACTS. Health Physicals - A 9th grade physical is required by the State of Illinois along with immunization records. Physical Forms are available in the main office. Please schedule an appointment with your primary care physician to complete this requirement prior to the start of the new school year. This will fulfill the sports physical requirement.
