You are a cherished donor and have our deepest appreciation for meeting the challenge and LEVELING UP this year! We truly could not have accomplished all we have without your generosity and participation. We rely heavily on donor support, which includes collegiate, alumni, family members and corporate partners.

As a top-level Educational Foundation, we have the personnel, policies, partnerships and framework in place to support high levels of success today, and in the future. Our Fraternity is more relevant today than ever as we continue to provide social and professional development, leading to lifelong success.

Since joining The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho in 2019 as your Chief Development Officer, I have worked hard to LEVEL UP and create a great culture of philanthropy. We’ve accomplished so much in four years, but we can still do so much more for the betterment of the brothers of Alpha Gamma Rho.

With your help, I know we can take giving and engagement to the next level in 2023. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to serve you. My sincerest appreciation for the time, talents and gifts that you gave in 2022.

Thank you for rising to the challenge and LEVELING UP!

PLANNED GIFTS

Whole life insurance policies, wills and estate plans are accepted when The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho is named as the owner and beneficiary on 100% of the policy.

TANGIBLE PERSONAL PROPERTY

Items such as jewelry, artwork, collectibles and equipment may be accepted by The Educational Foundation.

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS

Many companies will match donations made by their employees to nonprofit, tax exempt foundations. Contact your employer to find out if they have a gift matching program!

GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE

The Educational Foundation is happy to work with any prospective donor interested in a gift of real estate. The Gift Review Committee must review gifts of real estate before acceptance.

STOCKS

Like readily marketable securities, stocks are accepted by The Educational Foundation. Making a gift of stock can have tax benefits — capital gain taxes can be avoided, and you may deduct the full fair market value of the gift. After consultation, nonpublicly traded securities may also be accepted.

COMMODITIES

These are a great way for brothers who are in production agriculture to support The Educational Foundation. Make a gift of grain, other crops or livestock as a more convenient way to give back. Although the process is simple, the impact is significant, and it may be a tax-advantage opportunity worth your consideration.

GIVEBOX

This is a great opportunity to help your chapter increase giving for your Chapter Endowment Fund. This free service is provided by the AGR Home Office to allow donors an easy way to give directly through your chapter website. By adding GiveBox technology to your website, donations will go directly to the Home Office and thank you letters will be distributed appropriately. All you need to do is promote the ability to give online!

CROWDCHANGE

This is a peer-to-peer fundraising platform built specifically for Greek-letter organizations’ philanthropy events. They have helped chapters across the country exceed their fundraising goals by offering a simple, easy-to-use platform with features to cover every type of philanthropy event including tickets, apparel and more!

LEVELING UP through chapter planning sessions

Chapter Strategic Planning Sessions, many professionally facilitated by past Grand President Zane Akins, and funded by The Educational Foundation, help chapters identify needs and create goals that contribute to the successful future of their chapter and the Fraternity. Each chapter develops a useful strategic plan to guide the following classes for the next five years.

Brother Akins’ strategy during the sessions is to engage, challenge and keep everyone on track. He feels it is important to let the chapter discuss their issues and have them make decisions on what strategy and actions they want for successful chapter operations.

The ability to continue to challenge brothers to grow within their chapter, despite hardships, leaves a lasting impression to create a legacy. It is highly encouraged that chapters take advantage of this opportunity to grow the bonds of brotherhood stronger by having a thoughtful and thorough strategic plan.

HOW TO SET UP A CHAPTER STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION:

1. Determine a date for the session

2. Send an email to Office Manager, Becky Haley, becky@alphagammarho.org, to schedule the dates

CHAPTER ADVISER, HOUSEMOTHER AND HOUSE DIRECTOR ENGAGEMENT

Chapter Advisers, Housemothers and House Directors play an integral part in the development of our collegiate members. These leaders are mentors, coaches and advocates for our chapters and the Fraternity experience. The Barrick Adviser Fund and the Marie Coe Fund help pay for this engagement.

Our Advisers across the nation have been engaging with their collegiate members to keep focus on their academics and chapter operations. Our Housemothers and Directors have contributed to provide a guiding hand to our members, keeping them grounded through the new reality around them. Additionally, our Regional Vice Presidents have been leveraging their connections with Advisers, alumni leaders and AGR supporters in their region to keep all groups informed of Fraternity activities, resources and engagement opportunities.

Whether it was interactions with the National Fraternity or participating in interfraternal activities from groups like the North American Interfraternity Conference or CSL Management, Advisers, Housemothers and House Directors are able to access a variety of educational offerings. Each expands their knowledge of the Greek community and teaches the importance of being flexible in their position.

3. Visit www.alphagammarho.org/chapter-strategicplanning-session to fill out the request form

4. Identify an equal number of undergraduate and alumni leaders, with a minimum of five in each group

5. Set up a Zoom meeting link for a virtual Chapter Strategic Planning Session with the Home Office

Specifically, for our Chapter Advisers, Adviser Forum is hosted two to three times a year in Kansas City. Facilitated by Tim Heiller, AGR’s Adviser Forum Coordinator, attendees are able to focus on key programming areas in an open dialog, and create a plan of action to be effective mentors and coaches to their collegiates brothers.

Always providing ever-present, positive support, our Chapter Advisers, Housemothers and Directors spark a resilient mindset among our undergraduate members, which helps inspire them with the necessary confidence to persevere through any situation.

Your support— at the next level

The support of an AGR member is an unmatched rival to the obstacles of life. An important piece in supporting your brothers includes, but is not limited to, donating to the Loyalty Fund or other funds. The Loyalty Fund provides numerous opportunities for growth and experience for brothers, either just starting their first year of college, or wrapping up their senior year looking to start their careers. Without your support, the legacies of your brothers would not get to live on while simultaneously helping brothers where they need it most. As we reflect on last year’s successes in this Growth Report, we are also excited for what lies ahead for Alpha Gamma Rho and your Educational Foundation. We applaud you and thank you for your continual support of your fellow brothers.

DONOR- DESIGNATED endowment funds

Donor-Designated Endowment Funds can include achievement awards for chapters who reach success in academic, leadership, citizenship and educational activities. Donor-Designated Endowment Funds can also be used to purchase technology upgrades for educational activities and scholarships at the university for members and potential members.

Paying it forward: Brothers helping brothers to level up

When Allen Matthews joined the Nu Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at NC State University, he had no idea how a chain of brotherhood connections would change his life, and inspire him to pay it forward to change the lives of other brothers.

Brother Matthews attended NC State pursuing a degree in forestry. He joined AGR in 1994 and received his bachelor's degree in Forest Management in 1999.

Upon graduation, he worked on his father-in-law’s farm for about nine months and then went to work in the forestry industry. One day, he received a call from a brother he had attended NC State with who told him about a guy looking for someone to work with him.

That guy was Brother Robert “Bob” Clinkscales. He was an AGR alum from the Theta Chapter of the University of Missouri. Brother Clinkscales moved his family to North Carolina in 1987. He worked for an institutional lender providing financing for farmland and timberland. In 2002, he retired, and the company asked him to stay on as independent contractor. Then in 2012, Brother Clinkscales decided he was ready to fully retire and concentrate on his passion of working with not-for-profit organizations. He took a chance on Brother Matthews and brought him to work with him to make a smooth transition into his full retirement.

"Bob mentored me for almost six or seven months," Brother Matthews said. "He's been a father figure to me. He's just a great person all around."

After months of working together, Brother Clinkscales retired and Brother Matthews took over. "I got to a point where I felt like I wanted to do something to show my appreciation to Bob," he said and recalled an earlier connection to an AGR brother that made an impression.

"At North Carolina State Nu Chapter, we had a benefactor, Louis C. Smith who was influential in providing funds for our chapter house. He gave a very generous amount,” Brother Matthews said. "I asked him why and he said, because of a Fraternity brother, he was able to do what he did. He did well for himself and wanted to give back. I have always remembered that."

Because of that connection, Brother Matthews and his wife, April, created the Robert "Bob" Clinkscales Endowment Fund which benefits Nu and Theta Chapter brothers with scholarship awards.

"This is a perfect example of the famous Alpha Gamma Rho network," said Carol Johnson, Ed.D., Chief Development Officer for The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho. "In the spirit of brothers connecting brothers, the Robert "Bob" Clinkscales Endowment Fund will continue to help brothers to level up in personal and professional ways."

Brother Matthews has continued to grow the business that Brother Clinkscales started. He still credits his success to his mentor. "I have what I have because of an AGR brother," he said.

Brother Allen Matthews with his mentor, Brother Robert "Bob" Clinkscales and his wife, Kathleen. Brother Matthews created the Robert "Bob" Clinkscales Endowment Fund to honor the man who made a huge impact in his career and life.

sayre fund

Brother William ‘Bill’ Sayre understood that the AGR brotherhood has an important lifelong impact on Alpha Gamma Rho brothers. The Sayre Fund was established when Brother Sayre provided gifts to The Educational Foundation, specifically to promote inter-chapter relations and cooperation. Simply put, the vision of Brother Sayre was to give chapters the opportunity to come together through social, educational and leadership activities, designed to further sow the seeds of fraternalism.

Chapters can submit a Sayre Fund proposal through the AGR website under The Foundation section. All proposals are due annually on October 1. Events supported by the Sayre Fund have included the Annual AGR Fall Shootout, AGR National BBQ Competition, the Texas AGR Retreat, the Fraternity’s involvement with National FFA Convention and many other worthwhile events.

Cultivating a greater strength of brotherhood is of great importance as uncertainty still looms. Brothers, both alumni and collegiate, should look for ways to engage with others across the community and the country. With a greater understanding of the technology at our fingertips, now is the best time to take advantage of what the Sayre Fund has to offer! Apply today, connect with brothers tomorrow.

HOW

TO APPLY FOR A SAYRE FUND

1. Complete the Sayre Fund Proposal on the AGR website under the Foundation tab www.alphagammarho.org/sayre-project-proposal

2. Submit your application for the next school year before October 1. AGR Growth Report | Page 15

GARY CLARK Leveling Up through Personal Commitment

Brother Gary Clark (Pi Chapter-Oklahoma State) has been a loyal contributor to The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho for 28 years. He is currently serving as co-chair of The Educational Foundation's Local Chapter Excellence Capital Campaign.

"Working with Gary is a genuine honor. He is a tremendous leader and one of the kindest people you will ever meet! His education and experience are truly inspiring, and I learn from him every time we have a chance to work together," said Carol Johnson, Ed.D., Chief Development Officer for The Educational Foundation. "When Gary and I initially started working through capital campaign materials, he said, ‘Failure is not an option.’ I can attest that anytime he works with you, it’s all success!"

Brother Clark previously served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Oklahoma State University. He also served from 1993 to 2001 on the Oklahoma State University Board of Regents.

A practicing attorney since 1975, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oklahoma State University in agricultural education before earning a law degree from the University of Texas.

Since his retirement in July 2021, Brother Clark has assumed a new role as a full-time leader, donor and volunteer to his community, Oklahoma State University and our Fraternity.

Brother Clark and his wife, Jane, reside in Stillwater, Oklahoma where they are very involved in their community, the university campus and Greek life.

Cultivating Relationships to the Next Level

Since 2017, Brother Glenn Stith (Omicron Chapter-Kentucky) has been the Chair of The Educational Foundation for Alpha Gamma Rho. He has also served as a Director for The Educational Foundation since 2007, and a very engaged Omicron brother who co-led the chapter’s successful new house campaign.

"At our recent National Convention, Glenn and his wife, Maggie, asked me to join them at their table." said Carol Johnson, Ed.D., Chief Development Officer for The Educational Foundation. "Glenn was being recognized as an AGR Hall of Fame inductee, but I can tell you I felt like the winner because he is a-front-of-the-room, award-winning, big-deal kind of guy. I am always motivated by Glenn, as he constantly works to cultivate relationships and use his 'world class' sales to best serve AGR. He truly is like a big brother to me, and I am so very thankful for the opportunity to work for and with him and Maggie!"

Brother Stith received his undergraduate degree in agricultural economics at the University of Kentucky and his MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. He then worked for Monsanto as Vice President of U.S. branded business, with responsibility for seeds, biotech traits and chemistry. Throughout his career, he traveled around the world to North America, Asia, South America and Europe.

housing campaign success

HOUSING RESOURCES TRUST

AGR’s Housing Resources Trust Board (HRT) developed a program to help chapters defer the cost for acquiring professional assessments of chapter houses. HRT Trustees help perform assessments which cover everything from immediate needs to long-term planning. These individuals recognize industry trends and understand AGR’s housing needs.

HRT HOUSING ASSESSMENT

The HRT Housing Assessment is an in-depth, professional look at the overall “health” of the chapter house and property. HRT Trustees identify a small group of companies who have broad experience and serve states in which our chapters are located. The HRT Board will match one-third of the assessment costs up to a total of $6,000. After the assessment, the chapter will be able to plan the best approach for improving their chapter house.

fund report

Fund advisery reports are provided to update brothers and friends of Alpha Gamma Rho on the existence, maintance and performance of endowment and other funds internally managed by The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS

Below is a list of current endowments, which are provided in an effort to maintain transparency. These funds are intended to continue in perpetuity, with the spendable balance allocated and dispersed from the specified annual amount stated in the fund agreement.

Page 32 | AGR Growth Report

FUNDS REPORT (continued) Page 34 | AGR Growth Report

OTHER FUNDS

Below is a list of all other funds. These funds differ slightly from endowment funds due to how the spendable balance is allocated based upon the intent of the donor. These funds may or may not be intended to continue in perpetuity, which means there may or may not be restrictions on the spendable balance and the full balance can be distributed.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENDOWMENT AND OTHER FUNDS?

Endowment refers to funds that continue in perpetuity, meaning the gifts are invested and only the allocated spendable amount can be spent.

Other Funds include Non-Endowment or “Temporarily Restricted” Funds, which refers to funds where there may or mat not be restrictions placed on the allocated amount of spendable funds.

* Contributions to this fund are still being solicited. The extent to which these contributions may eventually be endowed will be based on donorspecific intent and/or Board directive.

foundation financials

The Educational Foundation financials are provided in an effort to maintain transparency and are managed by an external accounting firm, Fortiviti, under regular review by The Educational Foundation Treasurer, Ron Brohammer. It is also audited on an annual basis. The Educational Foundation financials are for the 2021 and 2022 fiscal years.

AGR’s Investment Management Process includes the Investment Committee (which implements the policy approved by the Board and makes investment decisions). The Investment Committee meets at least four times a year. They retain professional investment management expertise which they use to review performance, evaluate investment managers and evaluate alternative investment approaches.

INVESTMENT COMMITTEE

Chairman, Educational Foundation Investment Committee

Every year, generous AGRs contribute time and money to help ensure we are fulfilling the Fraternity’s Promise. Last year, even as global events combined to make it an almost historically poor year for the investment markets, was no exception. AGR brothers, once again, LEVELED UP! Elsewhere in this report you will read about the financial investments made by generous AGRs. You will learn how those dollars are being used to support the educational and leadership development programs of Alpha Gamma Rho. My job is to report on the work of The Foundation Investment Committee; the volunteers who both safeguard and grow the dollars generously given to help Make Better Men

The Foundation investment pool totaled about $12.3 million on Dec. 31, 2022. After adjusting for deposits and withdrawals, the 2022 investment return was a negative 15.3%. A portfolio with 70% Equities and 30% Fixed Income would have resulted in a negative return of about 16.5%. So, while 2022 was an extremely difficult year for investing, the Foundation investment portfolio modestly outperformed the “market.” Since 2006, investment earnings have increased the value of donor contributions by more than $4.3 million. Donor contributions over that same timeframe exceeded payments by $6.2 million. The moving 10-year annual return of 6% has enabled the Board to authorize a 4% pay-out for endowed funds for the past several years, even as annual fluctuations in returns were experienced.

Approximately 60% of the money in the investment pool is restricted for use by specific chapters. These approximately 100 funds support chapter-specific leadership, scholarships and housing projects. The remaining 40% is the result of National Fraternity fundraising for the Loyalty Fund, the Sayre Fund, the Gene Lemon Fund, AGRconnect and National Scholarships. Largely because of the ongoing Capital Campaign for Local Chapter Excellence, additions to the investment pool in 2022 exceeded withdrawals by nearly $1 million.

The investment portfolio remains diversified. Approximately 50% of the portfolio is invested in U.S. based equities, 15% is invested with firms in non-U.S. developed nations and another 8% is invested in Emerging Market equities. Approximately 16% is invested in traditional fixed income instruments with the remaining 10% invested in alternatives. Investment risks associated with the War in Ukraine, rising interest rates and inflation have led to some adjustment in the specific funds being used in the portfolio. Equity investments, for example, are now tilted more toward high quality, dividend paying companies and less toward the Large Cap Growth sector. Reallocation decisions like this are made regularly by the Investment Committee based on the advice of our Investment Adviser.

I will close with a request — that all AGR brothers pledge to more aggressively use the resources of The Educational Foundation. As a Foundation donor, I am comfortable with the management of the investment pool. But the real value in these generous contributions will only be found if we actually use those dollars to help Make Better Men!

Kristie and I are now somewhat empty nesters. Our oldest daughter, Blair, has graduated college and is well on her way to a successful, professional career. Our youngest daughter, Haley, is a Junior at the University of Arkansas and is proudly involved with her sorority, as she makes progress toward graduation. We are very proud of them both. Time moves by so quickly, and it did not seem so long ago that we were popping in DVDs (remember Netflix started as a mail-order DVD service, not streaming) when they were young. Trust me, you did not go on a long trip without something to entertain them!

I am reminded of all those animated movies they would watch. “Beauty and Beast”, “The Incredibles”, and my favorite – “Shrek!” … fill in the blank of your favorite children’s movie. One movie I remember, “Hercules”, tells of someone who could be great but doesn’t know how, but he finds a way, and as the story always goes, becomes the hero. A plot that we have seen many times before, but it always resonates with us. Our donors to The Educational Foundation have many life stories both happy and sad. However, in the eyes of our undergraduate brothers, those donors are in many cases the difference between going to college or not, becoming a leader or not, and continuing to “Make Better Men.” Your donation helps them find a way forward. You are their hero!

Alpha Gamma Rho’s movie does not end with being first to the finish line in a 100-meter dash. It is a marathon. A marathon we must compete in and win. We make better men, one brother at a time. Our Capital Campaign focuses on Local Chapter Excellence, which is still in the pilot phase but will go nationwide next year. We owe it to our undergraduate brothers to give them a great college experience that includes scholarships, internships, preparations for a great career, and most importantly, growth in their brotherhood. But to get our brothers there, we have to do more. We have to “LEVEL UP” and reach for the next rung that will provide a hand up, so they can reach their goals.

The movie “Hercules” had a hero’s theme song, “Go the Distance” —

“I’ll be there someday, I can go the distance I will find my way if I can be strong

I know every mile would be worth my while

When I go the distance, I’ll be right where I belong”

We are where we belong at Alpha Gamma Rho, but we must go the distance. On behalf of the Fraternity, I want to thank The Educational Foundation for its outstanding efforts in LEVELING UP our fundraising. I’m also thankful to every donor for their generous support of our various leadership programming and scholarship initiatives. Please join us by “LEVELING UP” and give that little bit extra, so we can reach the finish line.
