As regards fiesta dates, Wednesday, October 9th is “Valencia Day”, a holiday in Valencia province. Many people come from there to this region hoping for a last sunny break before winter. If they take the following Thursday and Friday off, Saturday, October 12th is a national “red” fiesta, so they could stay for the weekend. October 12th is a complicated fiesta. In years gone by it was “Día de Cristóbal Colón” (Christopher Columbas day). Revelations that he was probably Italian, not Spanish, turned this fiesta into “Día de la Hispanidad” (Hispanic day). Día de la Hispanidad

Unfortunately, the “Extreme 40s” sailing event will not return to Almería port for the second year running. It was a major event from 2009-2011. Squabbles over who paid their share of the money needed to host the event in 2012 resulted in the organizers dropping Almería as a venue. It was a good tourist attraction, apart from all the crews, organizers, support staff and fans staying in Almería hotels. The televised event is seen in over 100 countries. Hopefully, the now dynamic Almería tourist department will try to get it back in 2014. The clocks go back one hour at 3am Spanish time on October 27th. There are very serious proposals that Spain might adopt Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the same as in the UK and Portugal. We explain the reasons for this in a following article. If this is adopted the Spanish clocks might have to be put back one hour twice, or not go forward!

Tough Luck! In order to clean out various channels at the base of the Cuevas reservoir, a controlled discharge of water took place recently. This is considered necessary to help purify the remaining water. Unfortunately, the dirty discharge swamped the sports canal that is now run by a private company and offers various activities. The operators have been told that any water based activities have to be suspended for 2 months. As a consequence, various bookings have had to be cancelled or re-scheduled. The company concerned are not impressed, but have been told that the quality of water used for both agriculture and domestic use is a priority. At a recent council meeting in Cuevas, councillors complained that no information regarding the completion of the new Galasa treatment plant at the reservoir to combat the harmful micro-chemicals was available.

“Caso Poniente” In October 2009, various specialized police forces raided El Ejido town hall, the “PA” political headquarters, and a “multi-service” company ‘Elsur’. They arrested 20 people in the largest fraud and corruption case in Almería province, called “Caso Poniente”. All town hall employees were obliged to speedily leave their desks and offices and were escorted outside. At present the case has not come to court. Anticorruption authorities and the courts blame this on incomplete paperwork and reports from technicians at “Hacienda”, the Spanish tax authority. The Sardine Invasion In stark contrast to the two large and rotting strange fish washed up on the beaches at Villaricos and Adra recently, Aguadulce marina recently witnessed an invasion of millions of sardines. A very large shoal swam right into the port on September 19th. Scuba divers and their craft suddenly found they were totally surrounded. The port has very clean and clear water, and this was given as one of the reasons why the sardines were not put off by murky water. The other explanation from seasoned fishermen related to the position of the sun and moon. This phenomenon has been seen before on a smaller scale before the last full moon of summer at Roquetas port entrance as well.

UK Ex-Pats Andalucía has seen a large increase in UK ex-pats in the last few years, growing from 100,000 in 1998 to 750,000 in 2012. Out of the six places with the highest proportion, five of them are in Almería province. Arboleas has a UK percentage of 68% of the population, Partaloa some 62%, and Mojácar 61%. Bédar and Los Gallardos also figure in this list. Other statistics show the average age to be 56 in Arboleas, 55 in Partoloa and 49 in Mojácar. Average ages in Bédar and Los Gallardos are 55 & 52 respectively. In other places such as Níjar, some 42% of all inhabitants are non-Spanish. In contrast, as many of them work in agriculture, the average age is 30.

Focus on Local News continued More Panther News On September 24th, two workers on the land at Castala near Gádor reported seeing what they believed was the famous “black panther”, first seen some 10 kilometres away in Berja during August. Following the sightings in Berja, various police and environment agents set up a large operation with night vision cameras and baited traps to try and catch the animal alive. They saw and caught nothing, except for sightings of wild boars, foxes and other small animals feeding in the cages. A new search was begun following the latest claim, but a possible footprint was more like that of a large dog. The police and other officials do not think that the various sightings are a complete hoax, but the very puzzling feature is that no attacks on poultry, sheep, or goats have been reported; nor the remains of any livestock or other animal found. Panthers are not known as being vegetarians!

The presentation of the award and the unveiling of an official plaque was carried out on October 20th. Seen as a major boost to tourism, the mayoress reminded the Mojácar population that every effort must be made uphold this special status. The Spanish awards are part of an international group of selected towns receiving the same accolade. This award will give Mojácar a prominent place in both national and international awareness.

Seat Belts Since the Spanish driver points system was introduced in July 2006, 16,000 drivers have been fined for not wearing seat belts with the loss of 55,600 points off licences in Almería province. A new campaign to concentrate on the wearing of seat belts and use of child seats took place in September. Safety studies show that 75% of all drivers and passengers who were thrown out of a vehicle because of not wearing safety belts, suffer very serious injuries or death. It is considered that in Almería province during the last two years, 16 people were killed following accidents for this reason. Police are also trying to hammer home the message that airbags on their own do not prevent serious injuries. They are only fully effective if the driver or passenger is wearing a seat belt as well. The release of airbags without a seat belt in place can also cause injuries.

Mercadona Fish From last July as part of a new policy, the supermarket chain Mercadona has been purchasing fish daily from the fish auctions at Adra, Almería and Garrucha port. The wide variety of fish purchased is intended to be on the supermarket fish counters in the 33 supermarkets in Almería province within one and a half to two hours maximum from the auction time. Now fish from these ports is to be made available to many more of the 1,400 supermarkets including Madrid. The policy here is that from their major distribution centre in Guadix, fresh fish is on sale within a maximum of 12 hours. Putting unsold fish in refrigeration is considered unsatisfactory, and supermarket staff are encouraged to competitively price the fish to sell out during the opening hours. Mercadona will buy other fish on the same policy from other Spanish ports. This new policy is considered a major boost

Bilingual Arboleas now has a new nursery where children up to the age of 3 can be enrolled and receive a bilingual Spanish and English training. The nursery is close to the Pedro Gilabert museum and has places for 81 children. By means of an internet connection available for suitable mobile ‘phones known as “Programa Babybook” parents can observe their children in real time whilst at the nursery. Although strictly speaking the enrolment period finished last April for the 2013/2014 year, parents can still apply for places for their children if there are any vacancies. This can be done by contacting the nursery on 950 620 606 or the web page www.elsaliente.com. The director of the nursery, Rosa Pastor, considers that at this age children are like a sponge and can take in bilingual information without it seeming like work, using all the aids normally found in a Spanish nursery, both verbally, and through images, photos and videos.

The Future in Spain? Traffic authorities and courts in Spain are studying a new revolutionary tool now used in Belgium to combat drink driving. People who come before the Belgium courts where the loss of their licence is of crucial importance in their work can opt for a special device to be fitted in their cars instead. Known as “Alcolock”, cars can be fitted with the equivalent of a mini breathalyzer that determines whether the car can be started or immobilized. The cost involved is a mere 3,500 euros, for the initial installation, and a further annual replacement of parts and maintenance cost of 1,000 euros. In Belgium, the prevalence of drink driving is most severe in the age group 40-50 years. Although designed to be completely foolproof, one of the problems is that a passenger or third person could obtain a positive result by using the driver alcohol meter instead of the real driver. In Belgiumc young drivers seem more aware of the dangers and penalties from drink driving, but they are unlikely to be able to come up with the cost involved for this device.

Mortgage and Loan Debts The Bank of Spain has calculated that up to the end of July, “bad” debts from mortgages reached 28.6 billion euros. This refers to the mortgage payments that have been stopped by persons in extreme financial problems, with little chance of any more payments being made. Although this is only 5% of all the money lent out on mortgages in total, it is the highest since 1998 when figures were first calculated. Unemployment is of course, the main problem for mortgage holders. Apart from this, money loaned by banks to property developers who have gone bust, or only just staggering along, come to 198 billion euros. This is 32% of the money lent, so 1 euro in every 3 that was lent out is a bad debt. At present, both these figures for home mortgages and developer debts are expected to increase. The Bank of Spain is also looking at the re-financed loans where banks have given longer repayment terms for developers. They are to classify them as “substandard” so not too bad, or “dire” where repayment is still highly doubtful.

No Smoking? Present regulations in Spain ban smoking in enclosed public areas such as bars, restaurants, shops and cinemas. No less a person than the Spanish Minister for Health, Ana Mato, is now proposing a slight change. This is because the ‘Eurovegas’ hotel and casino project planned for Madrid has always requested that smoking must be allowed in their six large casinos that are part of the enormous project. Ana Mato is hinting that the benefits to health of a no-smoking ban “may” have to be balanced by the economic benefits in this case. This part proposal is causing intense controversy between health officials and organizations such as hotel owners throughout Spain. They also want the complete no-smoking ban to be modified for them. The Spanish National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking has pointed out that in many US states there is a ban on smoking in casinos there as well, and asks “Health at what price”?

An End to “Roaming”

The EU have decreed that from July 2014 telecommunication companies cannot charge extra amounts of money for calls on mobiles when in another member state, known as a “roaming” charges. They also intend that persons using a mobile from one member state must have the option to use another provider whilst in a different EU country if that tariff is cheaper, and the maximum that can be charged is to be 19 céntimos plus IVA per minute. They also state that a surcharge on fixed telephone lines for EU calls will be prohibited. The charge for a call within a member state, say from Almería to Madrid within Spain, has to be the same for a call to Reduced Charges other EU numbers. The implementation of this regulation throughout all member states may take two years. Spain wants to reduce these charges as soon as possible, and even as soon as 2014. The Secretary of State for Commerce, Jaime García-Legaz, intends to regulate the commission from a typical 0.7% for debit cards down to 0.2%, and for credit cards from 0.8% to 0.3%. The overall reduction in commission charges would be 60% less. The Spanish Commerce Committee representing traders thinks that a varying commission rate should be introduced, that depends on the monetary amount of the transaction. Community Work In 1992, the idea of community work for minors came into being in Spain as an alternative to time spent in a young offenders centre. In 2007, this was introduced as well for many traffic offences, instead of a short prison term. Some 90% of all penalties for traffic offences apart from just a fine, involve a period of community service, including some drink driving offences. Hours of work are chosen to impinge the least on normal work hours if they are in employment. Other minor offences for a variety of reasons are now dealt with by the courts in the same way. The community workers, although receiving no wages, are temporally covered by Social Security in case of accidents if they have no normal cover

Almería to Seville In 2009, the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province), obtained permission from the Ministry of Transport to subsidize ‘Air Nostrum’ flights from Almería to Seville. This reduced a very long road journey to a flight of 50 minutes. These flights started in January 2010 with a contract term of 4 years; so it runs out in January 2014. The Junta are going to ask for the contract to be renewed as a continuing public service need. The average passenger occupancy has fluctuated around 47% throughout most of the months, but was 51% this June. This is considered excellent by the airline, and relates to 17,000 passengers in the first six months

At present there are two flights Monday to Friday in both directions, at 7am and 8pm from Almería and flights at 8.40am and 9.30pm from Seville with a reduced service at weekends. If the flights are continued, bids may have to be obtained from other airlines who decide they would like to take over the flights. ‘Air Nostrum’ will almost certainly bid again. .The Almería Drone Unmanned aircraft known as “drones” have hardly ever been used in Spain for any type of use. In many other countries, including the EU, they are used for border controls, following forest fires at night with infra-red cameras, or for military use. Despite this, there is a major company in Barcelona that manufacture these types of aircraft, with a large market in other countries. Recently the advantages of drones were demonstrated at Almería airport. This was for consideration as part of an EU program known as “Perseus”, encouraging these drones to be used for border control. Illegal immigration by sea from Morocco and other nearby African countries is still big problem for the Guardia Civil police and the Spanish coast guards. There is a sea system known as “SIVE” that employs sensors off the Almería and Malaga coasts, but the modern trend is for perhaps 8 or 9 people to set off in an inflatable craft that is only the size of those used for recreational use at beaches. These are much more difficult to spot. The drone used spent two hours in the air and there was a simulated illegal immigrant inflatable, along with coast guard vessels, in the Mar de Alborán sea. The drone proved that detection was much easier, and exact co-ordinates in real time could be transmitted to coast guard vessels, without a normal spotter aircraft being launched. They can also operate at night. Other tests along the coast are planned to take place in coming weeks.

Not In 2024 Spain is still licking their wounds after they were eliminated in the first voting round for the 2020 Olympic Games venue. There were high hopes that a European venue would be chosen after the next 2016 games in Brazil. It has been announced consequently that Spain will not put themselves

forward for consideration for the 2024 games. This is not just sour grapes, because Paris and Berlin are likely venues for the 2024 event. Ana Botella, the mayoress of Madrid, has stated that money that was envisaged for the modernization of various sites in Madrid would still be made available for some of the projects, and Madrid would therefore have improved facilities for international sport in any case. The mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, has added fuel to the flames by stating that if Barcelona had been the city in Spain for the 2020 games they would have come here instead of Tokyo! The cost of the Spanish submission has yet to be published, but there are assurances that it was cost effective, and less money has been spent than in the 2016 unsuccessful bid!

Reverend Pauline Williams Church of England chaplains in areas such as our own are appointed by the Dean of Gibraltar. The Reverend Pauline Williams was appointed on September 12th, at a service in the St. Pasqual, Agua de Enmedio, Anglican Church in Mojácar. She is the priest in charge of the Costa de Almería and Costa Cálida regions. Initially her timetable is taking Eucharist at Mojácar every Sunday at 11am; at Albox on the last Thursday of the month, again at 11am; at Costa Cabana on the first Saturday of the month at 12.30am in the Community Centre; and at Roquetas on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 11.30am in ‘Burty's bar’ in Avenida Playa Serena.. She will also take Evensong at Albox on the second Sunday of the month at 6pm.

Focus on Local News continued “AVE” News The missing links in the line from Murcia to Almería regarding the “AVE” (High speed train line) have many of them finally approved, according to latest information given by the Spanish rail authority “ADIF”. The next step is the awarding of contracts for the work to be put in motion. We deal with these latest plans in an article.

Fuller Terms The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province), has announced that new legislation will be passed to ensure mortgage conditions are fully spelt out and not hidden in the small print. In particular, the interest rates must be clear, and the inclusion of “abusive” conditions will be prohibited. This will apply to the minimum interest rates charged, (known as “floor” rates) that has been a major feature of recent EU and National court judgments, and caused hardship to many mortgage holders by being artificially high. Many banks abandoned these punitive

rates on May 9th when the written summary of a Spanish High Court case in March concluded that these were unjust and artificially high. The judgment was sent to all mortgage lenders. Future quotes for mortgages will have to be personalized to each client and not just a standard blurb that may be unclear. The period when a prospective mortgage applicant can study the terms and get other quotes (the cooling off period) will be 30 days instead of the present 15 days. The Junta cannot dictate how banks apply their lending criteria, but these regulations come under the heading of consumer rights. Banks will also not have the right to ask for a life insurance premium or a house insurance policy to be taken out from the same bank if a client has not agreed this. Consumers will have the right to shop around. Early next year it is also intended that notaries, where a mortgage is part of the sale and purchase contract, must report and eliminate abusive clauses. Notaries and lenders will be fined if such clauses exist in the contracts and no action is taken.

So Now You Know... Cannabis or Marijuana Marijuana has been used as an agent for achieving euphoria since ancient times, particularly in China, and also as a medicinal herb. Its use spread from China to India and then to N Africa and reached Europe at least as early as A.D. 500. It became a major crop in colonial North America where marijuana (hemp) was grown as a source of fibre. It was extensively cultivated during World War II when Asian sources of hemp were cut off. In the 1950s - 60s it was used by students and "hippies" in particular, and smoking cannabis became a symbol of rebellion against authority. Although classed as a “controlled substance” in many countries, it can be prescribed to combat conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

Land Speed Record Verified land speed records are now 115 years old. In 1898,Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat of Paris drove his car through a measured kilometer at an average speed of 39.24 mph. The 100 mph barrier was broken in 1904 by another Frenchman. (Sir) Michael Campbell drove the Napier-Campbell Bluebird to 174.9 mph in 1927 and 301 mph in 1935. In 1997, Andy Green, an RAF fighter pilot, driving for Richard Noble in the Thrust SSC broke the sound barrier at Mach 1.02 at 763 mph. Rocket propelled vehicles are being designed to go over 1,000 mph, but at present the Thrust SSC holds the world record. The ever present problem is to prevent these vehicles from becoming airborne.

Tower Cranes Very high cranes known as tower cranes were developed in the 1960s to 70s for construction work. Limited access on building sites meant that a tall mast fixed to the ground took up minimum space. Sometimes the mast was built up within a lift shaft. A long swinging jib at the top with moveable counterbalances meant that a wide area could be fed with materials. The drivers cab became invariably sited at the top of the mast. “Kangaroo” tower cranes feature hydraulic jacks that allow extra vertical sections to be added at the top or bottom. The crane’s height then keeps pace with the building. Quite often, a smaller crane has to be lifted up to help dismantle the tower crane when work is completed.

Banknotes The first recorded use of paper money was in the 7th century in China. However, the practice did not become widespread in Europe for nearly 1000 years. In the 16th century, the goldsmith-bankers began to accept deposits, make loans and transfer funds. They gave paper receipts for gold coins deposited with them, promising to pay back the gold on demand. In 1694, the Bank of England was established in order to raise money for King William III’s war against France. The deposit notes now promised to pay “the bearer”, so they could be circulated by traders. “Notes” for smaller amounts followed and by 1914 the Treasury issued 10 shilling and 1 pound notes. The Bank of England took this over in 1928.

Nudist Clubs The first nudist club in the UK was established in Wickford, Essex in 1924. Members were carefully selected by a committee. By 1943 there were a number of so-called "sun clubs" and together they formed the ‘British Sunbathers Association’. A rival association joined them in 1964 and they became the ‘Central Council for British Naturism’. The first official naturist beach was opened at Fairlight Glen in Covehurst Bay near Hastings in 1978, followed later by beaches at Brighton and Fraisthorpe and in 1980 at Bridlington. General acceptance of naturism led to a great number of clubs or coastal campsites, and many more beaches. Eventually, international hotels were opened, such as Vera Beach Hotel.

Strimmers The “string trimmer” was invented in the early 1970s by George Ballas of Houston, Texas. He conceived the idea while watching the revolving action of the cleaning brushes in an automatic car wash. His first trimmer was made by attaching pieces of heavyduty fishing line to a popcorn can bolted to a motor. He called this the "Weed Eater", since it chewed up the grass and weeds around trees. It works on the principle that if a line or cord is spun fast enough in its housing centrifugal force makes it stiff. Even round-section nylon line was found able to cut grass and some woody plants quite well. Powerful cutters use an extruded shape chord, like a star, that helps the line slash heavy material.

With property prices tumbling, mortgage amounts are quite often greatly in excess of the property value on the open market. Now, only 30% of property purchases in Spain involve an associated mortgage. The other 70% are cash buyers. Having got badly burnt fingers, banks and “cajas” are much more wary of new mortgages, now requiring much higher deposits and reduced lending. With property prices at an all time low, and often only 50% of their value in the boom years, purchasers are becoming people who can come up with ready cash. Lack of confidence in banks in general has meant that Spanish people with savings built up over the years are buying property as a long term investment, or to get rental income in the short term. Increasingly, parents with savings are helping their sons or daughters to buy a home. Also, some 20% of cash buyers are now non-Spanish nationalities, although some borrow money in their own country. Properties being sold for 70-100,000

July and August have traditionally been months when property purchases fell off, with regard to the rest of the year. Many estate agents have experienced something of a boom in these months in 2013. The recent new regulations regarding nonEU purchasers are also having an effect. Buyers from Russia, China, or other countries, can now obtain a two year residents permit if they buy a single property over 500,000 euros, or build this up in a number of purchases. No entitlement to benefits such as health care follow, but purchasers do not have to go back to their native countries to keep renewing short term visas. Some analysts think cash buyers will help halt the property value decline.

Changing the Clocks

n approximately one month the Spanish parliament will debate the plan that Spanish time goes back one hour to Greenwich Mean Time. This follows the presentation to the Spanish government of a nine month study by over 60 experts in health, safety, industry, education, social trends and related topics. This would change the time in Spain from being one hour in front of GMT or UK time, which has existed for the last 70 years.

make everybody feel “more human”. They consider that the relatively long work hours with the siesta time in the middle, does not help productivity. They also consider that family time and leisure time after work would be increased if the siesta time was shorter, resulting in greater harmony in the home. They say more time spent with children or friends at the end of the day with more interaction would benefit all relationships.

Surveys of Spanish lifestyle have thrown up the frequent complaint that at present the working day allows little contact and interaction between working parents and their children, with detrimental results. This is a direct result of the long siesta times in the middle of the day that will be debated as well, known from a working point of view as “dead time”. Many industrial working days in Spain start at 9am, but in other European countries at 8am. The suggestion is that work should start at 8am GMT in Spain as well. The experts also believe that having a lunch break at 1pm, as is the norm in the UK, greatly suits the biological clock; and this should be adopted too. If the siesta times in Spain were reduced from the two or three hours at present, the working day could finish much earlier. Another consideration is the time when people go to bed, and this relationship to the circadian biological clock. Many people in the UK think that 10.30pm is a time of night when they think seriously about going to bed. In Spain at present, this is considered peak viewing times on TV channels, with many popular programmes starting then. Nuria Chinchilla of the “Centro Internacional del Trabajo y Familia” (International centre for work and family studies) considers that at present Spaniards are effectively suffering from one hour of “jet lag” at least, everyday. She is convinced that this affects the natural heart rhythm, brain activity, stress levels, school absenteeism, and accidents in the home and roads in the evening. Other experts from a Spanish organization for the rationalization of the time in Spain (ARHOE), think that with GMT time, work productivity would increase greatly. It would help with learning in schools, and

If this change to GMT time is adopted, the 60 experts think that a whole review of working hours and the “dead time” in the middle of the day must be considered as well. They agree that this is a very complex subject. One outcome would be that the stock exchanges and some banks would be out of step with other EU countries that still have the one hour difference. At present, with the two hour minimum siesta time in Spain, and with the clocks set at present, there is already a considerable mismatch with other countries anyway, that would be improved. At one stage, the date when clocks went back or forward in Spain and other EU countries compared to the UK was on different dates. At least this was rationalized some years ago. If adopted, UK TV programmes would start at the same time in Spain!

Taking Stock

he completion of the “Alta Velocidad Española” (AVE) high speed train link coming to Almería city from Murcia is still a very hot potato. It is seen as vital by politicians in both Almería province and the Junta de Andalucía, industry, and the Almería port authorities. As regards the overall picture, it forms part of the “Mediterranean Corridor”, an enormous project of some 1,300 kms to join France to Algeciras by rail, for both passenger and goods traffic.

on, with a completion date of 2015. Of the sections from Murcia to Pulpí, four of them are now ready to be put out to tender, with the station at Lorca subject to an ongoing study. The line from Murcia to the Almería border is 76 km long, and another 108 km from there to Almería city. So far only four sections here of the twelve have been started and completed, known as the Vera-Los Arejos sections. This has needed major expenditure as extensive tunneling had to be done.

The EU see high speed rail projects as a vital necessity and are heavily subsidizing the cost of a whole series of rail links in various EU states on a payment by results basis. The 1,300 km France to Algeciras line has a total budget of 53 billion euros. Where the line will go from Almería city to Granada, and whether it will continue along the coast to Motril, or go inland, are far from settled. As far as the Murcia-Almería link is concerned, the project has been split into a number of distinct sections. From Murcia to the border with Almería province there are eight sections, with another twelve from there to the new station in Almería city. To get to Murcia, a connection is needed from Alicante. Apart from new stations in both Murcia and Almería there will be another station at Lorca, and a smaller one serving this area, opposite the petrol station on the road from Las Buganvillas to Vera. Reduced spending by the Spanish central government and “ADIF”, the rail authority, has meant that a completion date for the arrival of the ‘AVE’ in Almería city has been steadily slid from 2014 to a “possible” date of 2020. Meetings of politicians and pressure groups from this area with the authorities in Madrid have not at present born much fruit. A recent question in the Spanish parliament from politicians here as to the existing estimates of future expenditure and completion of all the studies and costings, has resulted in some soothing replies but no concrete promises. The latest information is that another seven of the twelve sections now have all the studies and technical projects completed. Only the plans for the station at Vera are not finalized as this is now subject to further revision. Politicians here have a slight fear that perhaps the Vera station is no longer as definite as has been assured up to now. In 2013, some 100 million euros is allocated for Almería province, mainly for minor completion work on the four sections now 99% complete, and to finance some technical studies. As of the end of September, only 14 million euros has been forthcoming. In late 2013 when the budgets for 2014 are published there is at present an assurance that “some” work in Almería province will be put out to tender and started. Money available is the whole key to any more work. The future location of the station in Almería city is still far from settled.

The First 1,000 Days

he 20th International Nutrition Congress was recently held in Granada. Reports and studies by experts on diet and nutrition were presented from many countries including Spain. Some of the findings are very thought provoking, and in many cases quite surprising.

Accelerated growth during the first two years of a child’s life is shown to result in a 30% more chance of later life obesity, and is borne out by studies in EU countries, including Spain, started in the 60s. Professor Koletzko says that the worst scenario is an underfed foetus and an overfed young child.

One of the major topics addressed the diet and nutritional needs of babies whilst in the wombs of pregnant mothers and following birth up to the age of two. This 1,000 day period is now considered to be of extreme importance, with a considerable influence on obesity, heart disease and diabetes in later life. This is not just during the life of one person. Studies over three generations directly link bad diet in the very early years of a grandmother to a future effect in her own children, and even grandchildren, through their inherited traits. Professor Koletzko from Munich University is an acknowledged export on nutrition in very young children. At the congress he confirmed that his research proved the first 1,000 days of life to be undoubtedly the most important period of any life. A foetus in the womb doubles its weight every few days, and tissue and organ development is more rapid than any increase following birth. He urges pregnant women not to fall into the trap that they are eating for two people, but rather that they have to eat with themselves and the foetus in mind. He advises that an obese pregnant woman, or one who over eats, will have this reflected in the good health of their new born baby. Women, in his opinion, should try hard to lose excess weight before conception. During pregnancy, only a 10% increase in “good” calories from a healthy diet is needed. The healthy diet is of extreme importance, along with some physical activity, and these give adequate nourishment, with the baby being born at an ideal weight. He considers that the popular view from grandparents that they want their grandchildren ideally to be “chubby” is quite wrong!

Another expert, Dr. Juan Rivera, from Mexico has led many studies in Latin American countries with a link to Spain. He thinks that obesity is now almost a world wide epidemic, with serious repercussions. He states that one of the reasons is that in countries where the healthy Mediterranean diet has previously been followed by the majority of the population, is now receding. High fat foods, or convenience foods, are now a big problem. He advocates a return to healthy food eaten round a table at specific times of the day, not continual snacking. In Mexico, Argentina and Chile it is now quite normal that even very young children grow up drinking sugar rich drinks instead of a large water intake. In Mexico, an average of 165 litres of sugar rich drinks are consumed every year by children or young adults. The extra calories consumed are not needed, and Breastfeeding is also stressed as being ideal during 50 or 60 extra calories a day will definitely result the first year of life. Mother’s milk results in a baby in obesity, increased liability to heart related diseases, often putting on less weight that if fed on formula or diabetes. Food for thought!

13th Julián Arcos Guitar S y m p o s i u m , A l m e r í a c i t y. October 18th at 9pm; The world famous British guitar player David Russell performs a concert in homage to the composer and performer Maty Rodriguez Expósito. October 22nd at 8.30pm; Carles Trebat performs classical guitar works by various composers. Both concerts at Auditorio Municipal Maestro Padilla. October 23rd at 8.30pm; Manolo Franco & El Niño de Pura perform a flamenco guitar concert at the Teatro Apollo. Admission to all concerts is free until full, but usually attract large audiences.

“Carmen” by Georges Bizet, performed by the 120 strong opera company “Operíssima” is on November 16th at 8pm, Auditorio Municipal Maestro Padilla, Almería city. Tickets are 25 & 29 euros.

Huércal-Overa Fiesta Friday, October 18th at 10.30pm, the spectacular show ‘SuperMartXé’ with Javier Reina, a famous Spanish DJ; part of their world tour. What’s On Exhibitions The ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ 36 prize paintings and other works of art (inspired by the film and locations in Almería) is at the Museo Pedro Gilabert in Arboleas, October 8th-27th . Almería airport has an exhibition of 22 works by famous Spanish artists including Picasso, from 1933 – 1998. The exhibition in the departure lounge is on view until January 12th, 2014. The works come from the “Aena” Spanish transport authority foundation for the arts. “Pinturas 1958-2013” depicts paintings by the Madrid artist Doreteo Arnáiz, in the “postcubism” or “pop-ar t” categories. The exhibition can be seen until November 3rd at the Centro de Arte, Almería museum. Opening hours Mondays 6pm9pm; Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11am2pm & 6pm-9pm; Sundays & Fiesta days, 11am-2pm.

What’s On Albox Royal British Legion will be holding their second Chinese Nosh & Quiz Night on October 12th at 7.30 pm, at the “Gran Muralla” Chinese restaurant in Albox. The official Standard (Ceremonial flag) was stolen from a car parked in the car park near “La Parrilla” Restaurant around 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Thursday 5th September. The Standard defines the Branch and sentimentally is irreplaceable. Last night, my friends and I went to a Ladies Night Club. One of the girls wanted to impress the rest of us, so she pulled out a $10 bill. When the male dancer came over to us, my friend licked the $10 bill and stuck it to his butt cheek! Not to be outdone, another friend pulls out a $20 bill. She called the guy back, licks the $20 bill, and sticks it to his other butt cheek.

Three women were sitting in an obstetrician's waiting room for their appointments. The redhead announces proudly, "I'm going to have a boy!" "How do you know?" one of the others asked. "I was on top, so I'm going to have a boy." The brunette says, "Well, I'm going to have a girl!" "How do you know?" the others ask. "I was on the bottom, so I'll have a girl." With that, they turn to look at the blonde -who promptly bursts into tears. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What's wrong?â&#x20AC;? the others ask. The blonde looks up and cries, "Then I must be having a puppy!"

In another attempt to impress the rest of us, my third friend pulls out a $50 bill and calls the guy over, and licks the $50 bill. I'm worried about the way things are going, but fortunately, she just stuck it to one of his butt cheeks again. My relief was short-lived. Seeing the way things are going, the guy races over to me! Now everyone's attention is focused on me, and the guy is egging me on to try to top the $50. My brain was churning as I reached for my wallet. What could I do?

Cross-Country Travel Four women were driving across the country. Each one was from a different state: Idaho, Nebraska, Florida and New York. Shortly after the trip began, the woman from Idaho started pulling potatoes from her bag and throwing them out of the window. "What the heck are you doing?" demanded the Nebraskan.

The woman in me took over! I got out my ATM card, swiped it down the crack of his butt, grabbed the eighty bucks, and left.

"We have so many of these darn things in Idaho, I am just sick of looking at them!" That made sense to the gal from Nebraska, so she began pulling ears of corn from her bag and tossing them from the window. "What are you doing that for?" asked the gal from Florida.

And That's When the Fight Started I heard my wife crying in the bathroom. "Honey? What's wrong" I asked. "Oh, George! Just look at me: I'm getting so old! I have more gray in my hair than blonde, I have varicose veins on both of my legs, and I'm just fat and wrinkled all over! I really need someone to say something positive about me right now!" I looked deeply into her eyes and said softly: "Your vision's real good, honey. That's something, isn't it?" And that's when the fight started....

"We have so many of these things in Nebraska, I am just sick of looking at them!" Inspired by watching the entire scene, the gal from Florida opened the car door and pushed the New Yorker out.

...and next... Wedding Dresses A little boy asked his mother the following question: "Mom, why are wedding dresses white?" The mother looks at her son and replies, "Son, this shows your friends and relatives that your bride is pure." The little boy didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really understand so he decided to ask his father. "Dad, why are wedding dresses white?" The father looks at his son in surprise and says, "Son, all household appliances come in white." A Dry Town In a small midwestern conservative town, there wasn't a place to get a drink for miles around, so a local entrepreneur saw an opportunity: He started to build a tavern. Liking a "dry" town, the local church started a campaign to block the bar from opening with petitions and prayers. The businessman was polite when congregants came to protest, but work continued on the tavern. But the night before the grand opening, a lightning strike hit the bar and it burned to the ground. The church folks were rather smug in their piousness after that -- until the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church was ultimately responsible for the destruction of his building, either through direct or indirect actions or means. The church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise in its reply to the court. At the first hearing, the judge held up the paperwork and called both the lawyers over.

Not So Good I went clubbing last night. Met a lady a couple of years younger than me, maybe 70ish, but still very attractive. We laughed and talked and drank. We drank and talked and laughed some more. Then she asked me a question just about every man has fantasized about: she asked if I had ever indulged in a mother and daughter threesome! When I recovered my wits and replied "no", she said this was my lucky night. Wow! It was one of those dreams come true! I drove her back to her house, and she unlocked the door and led me inside. My heart was pounding. Then she shouted up the stairs, "Mom, are you still awake?"

Retirement My parents recently retired. Mum always wanted to learn to play the piano, so dad bought her a piano for her birthday. A few weeks later, I asked how she was doing with it. "Oh, we returned the piano," said my Dad, "I persuaded her to switch to a clarinet instead." "How come?" I asked. "Because," he answered, "with a clarinet, she can't sing."

"I don't know how I'm going to decide this," the judge said, "but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner that believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that doesn't."
