The Focus is free every month and distributed from Mojácar to San Juan de los Terreros on the coast and inland as far as Albox and Huércal-Overa.
The copy deadline for the July issue is June 18th.
June
is the month when we start to see more tourists, but not normally families with children who are still at school. Consequently, the amount tourists spend here is higher. In our ‘In the News’ section we comment on the recent arrival in Almería port of five cruise ships in just three days, predominantly tourists from America, Canada and Australia who came here on luxury cruises. Calculations of their spending on their short stay from purchases and excursions was put at 200300 euros per person, so big spenders.
The ‘Blue Flag’ beach and port awards have been announced and Almería province has 35 this year, three more than last year over the 249kms of coast. Mojácar has regained one along with Cuevas del Almanzora, with a new one in Palomares. In our ‘In the News’ section we list the locations of the ones in our area.
Spain and Portugal are still reeling from the disastrous blackout with no electricity on April 28th that extended into the 29th, and some places here were without electricity until midday on the 29th, the last places in Spain to be reconnected. Apart from ruling out a cyberattack, the exact cause and the reason why it became a national blackout has not been established. Being without mains electricity, landlines, mobile phone coverage and internet showed how much we depend on all these services. In an article we explain what seems to have happened, and we have further comments in our ‘In the News’ section. The big question is whether it might happen again?
Last year during June, there were still some restrictions on the amount of water that we were asked to use sparingly. Apart from Vera, all our water comes from ‘Galasa’ who buy it from the Carboneras desalination plant. The company is 51% owned by the Almería ‘Diputacíon’ (County council) and the remainder is apportioned out between all the municipalities. The amount of water lost through leaking pipework is staggering and is quantified as being about 9 cubic hectometres each year, over several years.
This is equivalent to the amount used by 80,000 households or irrigation for 2,000 hectare,s and Galasa pays about three million euros for this amount of water that no-one can use. The PSOE political party in Almería city are demanding that the Junta de Andalucía takes some positive action to stop consumers having to unfairly pay for the losses.
In our ‘In the News’ we comment on the shock measures being taken to improve waiting times for consultant appointments and minor operations at the three public hospitals in our province. The Andalucía Health Authority are paying for free appointments and minor operations at the two private hospitals in Almería city. Last year, the number of minor operations was 2,127 with 86,630 people having a diagnosis. Another 17 million euros has been allocated to keep up the momentum.
The beginning of June sees the annual Moors and Christians events in Mojácar that celebrate the surrender of the Moors to the Christian forces from Granada on June 10th 1488. In return, the Moors were promised a peaceful co-existence that unfortunately didn’t last for very long. In our ‘What’s On’ section we detail the events over the four days.
There are no national fiesta dates in June or July when town halls and banks and some offices are shut, but the evening of June 23rd is the vigil of ‘San Juan’ (John the Baptist) who was reputedly born on June 24th. Bonfires are lit on beaches, often with music and fireworks.
In an article, we explain how a very drastic proposal is one of 12 objectives in a draft bill in parliament, to increase the stock of rental properties for young people. It applies to non-EU nationals and non-legal residents in Spain, including Brits wanting to come to live here, buy a holiday home, or as tourist accommodation. A new state tax is a surcharge of 100% on the price of a second-hand property. Quite possibly, hopefully, the 100% tax will not be passed in parliament and a reduced tax will be agreed instead. UK nationals who are legal residents in Spain are not affected.
People in Spain are used to experiencing power cuts, but on April 28th-29th the unthinkable happened; no mobile or data coverage! Together, Movistar, MasOrange and Vodafone have 60,000 mobile phone antennae distributed throughout the country that run on electricity at around 40,000 sites. Only some of them have batteries and these quickly ran down with millions of people trying to contact families and friends. To successfully make a call, send a message or use WhatsApp, all the connections from one place to the other have to be working. When electricity was restored in some areas, phone coverage was still affected because the restored power was not universal. The main operators activated their emergency protocols to try to restore services as soon as possible but with only limited success. Vodaphone managed to recover 60% of mobile traffic by 11pm on Monday, April 28th, but only 50% of their nodes were active. By 7am on Tuesday, April 29 they had restored 95% of traffic with 82% of operational nodes. The problems varied by area however and at 11pm on Monday, April 28th they had only restored 30% of nodes in Andalucía and 20% in Murcia. Civil Protection, police, ambulances, firefighters and maritime rescue have a network outside the conventional one that works with their own frequency band, only used by these services and not liable to become saturated. 112 emergency centres have backup diesel generators but requests were made to keep calls to a minimum for real emergencies. DTT (digital terrestrial television)
and FM radio stations have a guaranteed priority power connection with backup generators to keep them running for at least five consecutive days before the fuel needs topping up. Internet data travels through fibreoptic cables to reach modems or routers and as the whole system needs large amounts of electricity, providers switched off their 5G networks to prevent overloads. On April 28th landlines failed as well. Years ago, the signal travelled through the old copper cables from the telephone exchange to the home with a guaranteed supply of electricity, and also, landlines were analog (you had to dial the numbers mechanically on a rotary disc), so they always worked, even if the power went off.
Every year at the start of summer, there is a discussion regarding driving barefoot or wearing flip-flops or sandals without anything behind the heel. The short answer is that they are not specifically illegal under Spanish traffic laws but are not recommended. However, there are two regulations that police officers have at their disposal. Article 17.1 of the general traffic laws states that a driver must be in full control of their vehicle at all times. Article18.1 refers to driving with a complete freedom of movement. In 2022 the Guardia Civil police, with reference to article 18.1 stated that wearing “chanclas” (flip-flops) was not specifically prohibited, but a driver could be fined if they were not capable of having completely free foot movements. Driving barefoot is considered to be a bad idea as there may not be sufficient contact with the pedals, particularly if people have sweaty feet. As regards flip-flops and sandals that are wider than normal shoes, it is considered that this can affect changing the foot position between the accelerator and the brake and they might get caught in the pedals. Also, if a driver has to make a rapid braking, such as an emergency stop, flipflops and sandals may become detached. The same regulations apply to wearing high heels, platform shoes and boots. It is considered that high heels and platform shoes raise the driver’s heels too much, so the angle of the foot on the pedals is quite different to normal. Boots with thick soles can mean that a driver cannot “feel” the pedals so this is
dangerous. The DGT (Spanish Traffic Police) consider that normal footwear that encloses the foot should be used at all times which allows a person to feel the pedals and the pressure they are exerting. They recommend that a person coming off the beach should have suitable shoes in the vehicle to change into. Fines for infringements under articles 17.1 and 18.1 go from 80 euros with no loss of points to 200 euros with a loss of six points depending on the circumstances, such as holding and using a mobile phone whist driving, part of the 18.1 regulation. A new traffic law is going through the Spanish Parliament that applies to people on motorbikes and ‘Vespa-type’ scooters. The driver and any passenger will have to wear shoes that completely cover the foot on all roads of any type and there is a proposal that this might be extended to all drivers. The DGT remind motorbike riders that the driver has to wear gloves and if there is a passenger on a motorbike or a scooter they also have to have an approved helmet.
From November 5th, the start of the winter schedule, Ryanair has announced some major changes designed to “improve efficiency”. They will no longer accept paper boarding passes and only those who present an electronic version downloaded onto their phone will be allowed to board. The maximum size allowed for hand luggage at no extra cost will remain at 40cm x 20cm x 25cm but any luggage that exceeds these measures will have a penalty of 70 euros, 10 euros more than the current penalty. In addition, those who need to bring a second luggage item on board must pay for the Priority Boarding service. Ryanair warns passengers that anyone who does not opt for this may be prevented from boarding, as the company reserves their right to refuse to transport any passenger. One of the most striking changes is the new “40 minutes” rule. There will be a fine of 100 euros per passenger for those who arrive at the check-in counter less than 40 minutes before the departure of the flight. The airline considers that at that time the boarding process is already underway and the counter is closed. This same fee will also apply to those who miss their flight and wish to
change it for the next available one, provided that they present themselves at the counter within an hour of departure.
It has now been made official that the Almería UD football club has been bought by Mohamed AlKhereiji, a Saudi businessman, for what is believed to be 100 million euros. The club was valued at 80 million euros when they went up to the first division in 2022, but only 60 million when they were relegated. He is the CEO of Engineer Holding Group (EHG), a media and investment business group encompassing the Saudi Media Company (SMC) that manages the advertising spaces of the Saudi Broadcasting Authority, and he is stated to be firm friends with Cristiano Ronaldo since his arrival in the Saudi Pro League. Despite the arrival of a new president, the intention is to follow the continuity line with Mohamed El Assy at the head of the club’s general management and João Gonçalves as sporting director. The former owner, Turki AlSheikh, bought the club five years ago, but has been disappointed with their progress. It appears that Mohamed Al-Khereiji has also taken over the creation of the “Sports City” on the land at El Toyo where the 2024 and this year’s Dreambeach Festival will take place, acquired by Turki Al-Sheikh with a value of 14 million euros.
A new AVE (High Speed Train) tunnel runs under the La Juaida industrial estate between Níjar and Almería and is just under 1km in length. The Government delegate, Pedro Fernández, came to inspect the progress recently and stated that it was 83% complete and before the end of the summer the two parts from each end would be connected. He highlighted “the great work” that is being undertaken. ‘Adif’, the Spanish rail company, is using the “Belgian method”, a procedure that allows the tunnel to be excavated from both entrances simultaneously under buildings and streets, without affecting the stability of the structures. This construction system, which is rare in high-speed railway works and more common in metro lines or urban underpasses, consists of first undertaking
the vault and the upper half of the tunnel, and then completing the excavation and interlocking panels of the lower half.
The Spanish economy is the one that has grown the most in the last two years in the Eurozone. There has been a strong domestic consumption with people making purchases, less exposure to the US and Russia compared to the rest of Europe, and foreign investment. On Friday, May 17th the Ibex 35 stock exchange closed at a new milestone and went up to 14,248 points for the first time since 2008 in the midst of the Lehman Brothers crisis 17 years ago. The rise so far this year is 21% despite the fact that Trump is still threatening the EU with tariffs. Joan Cabrero, analyst and strategist at ‘Ecotrader’, has stated that, “I would not be surprised if the strong rise of the last few weeks takes the Ibex 35 above the psychological barrier of 14,500 points.”
The excellent figures from Spanish banks who are achieving record profits has helped the rise, and shares in Banco Santander have increased in value by 57% so far this year, along with a 43% increase for the BBVA bank. Low inflation figures have also helped. Three companies comfortably exceed 100 billion euros in market capitalisation: Inditex the fashion chain, Banco Santander, and Iberdrola the energy provider. People with private pension plans linked to the stock exchange performance will find that their pensions have improved in value.
The Diverhotel in Aguadulce is one of the jewels of the Senator hotel chain in our province and will reopen its doors on June 21st after a renovation, renamed Mirador del Cabo Hotel. There is a very big move away from the “all inclusive” holidays with families and it will only cater for adults. The hotel is located just a few minutes from the Aguadulce Marina, with restaurant options, bars and nautical activities, and an ideal place for snorkelling and diving. A Senator spokesperson has commented that, “The location and design of the hotel allow us to offer a more intimate and sophisticated experience, which better responds to the profile of a client looking for rest, good gastronomy and
contact with nature. Families are an audience that is highly conditioned by the school calendar, while this new approach allows the season to be extended, to attract an international profile and keep the hotel open more months a year.” A few years ago, a large hostal, unhappy with families that stayed there became an adult only one. It was ruled that they could do this quite legally, as long as the policy was fully spelt out on their webpage, booking conditions, and in their reception area for any guests who turned up without booking.
The Spanish Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has made an official complaint to the Ministry of Culture, accusing Ticketmaster of “irregularities and abusive prices” for the concerts by Puerto Rican performer ‘Bad Bunny’ in Madrid and Barcelona next year. Ticket sales quickly topped 600,000 far more than any other concerts in Spain. The OCU stated that a basic ticket price of 79,50 euros had an additional charge of 3,30 euros as a donation, 36,50 euros for a management fee and 150 euros for a VIP pass. The OCU criticised the management fee as the purchase is done entirely by the individual purchaser from start to finish, including printing out their ticket. They state that these surcharges are hidden, until the buyer is right at the end of their purchase process and are not refundable in the event of a refund for the basic ticket price. In fact, ticket prices went considerably higher and on May 14th for the last concert in Madrid on June 3rd, 2026, the available ticket prices that were stated to include “estimated taxes, booking and handling fees” went from 182 to 712 euros and 1,243 euros with a VIP pass. However, it was stated that the final
ticket price “will be calculated later in the checkout process”. The OCU complain that the system of “dynamic pricing” is abusive, as the ticket prices keep going up as more and more people buy tickets, reaching absurd amounts of money that after the official complaint reached over 2,000 euros. The same complaint about dynamic pricing was made against Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift and Oasis for their world tours. Ticketmaster maintain that dynamic pricing is approved and agreed to by the performers, otherwise they don’t do it.
In Spain, any major police investigation is monitored by a judge who authorises phone taps if necessary, and search warrants for raids on premises and arrests. The investigation is kept entirely secret until it is concluded. In May it was revealed that a very major operation codenamed ‘Orontes’ was spearheaded by the National Police in Spain, Europol and Eurojust in Europe, and specialist police in Saudi Arabia, that took place last January. A judge in a court in Almería monitored the simultaneous raids and arrests “in real time” with police videos from each city or country. 250 police raided five premises in Almeria, one in Antwerp, four in Madrid and one in Valencia, Málaga and Cádiz. The gang was led by a Jordanian-Palestinian living in Belgium who was providing money laundering for criminal gangs and mafias, that exceeded 21 million dollars (19 million euros). The money was originally processed through Saudi Arabia, and Chinese criminals based in Madrid brought in and delivered large amounts of cash that was transferred to different areas of Spain. It was then used for drug trafficking and human trafficking and the whole operation was carried out without any money going through the normal banking system. Police confiscated 205,000 euros in cash, more than 183,000 euros in cryptocurrencies, 18 vehicles valued at more than 207,000 euros, 8 computers and 37 mobile phones - most of them encrypted. The judge ordered the embargoing of 10 properties valued at more than 2.5 million euros. Jewellery and watches seized were valued at 24,000 euros, high-end bags worth more than 230,000 euros, top brand wines worth more than 7,000 euros and cigars worth more than 622,000 euros.
17 people were arrested and 15 were remanded in custody charged with belonging to a criminal organisation and money laundering.
Parking at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city is a nightmare, but unfortunately it will get much worse before it gets better! The company New Capital 2000 SL has been given a contract worth 23.5 million euros for the construction of the new six-storey high-rise car park. There will be space for just over 2,000 vehicles, made up of visitors and staff parking and it is intended that it will be open at the end of 2026. There will be lifts to all floors and the main pedestrian access will be level with the main access to the hospital. There will also be pedestrian access on another floor. The contract includes a roof-top cafeteria, estimated cost 828,200 euros, covering 1,000m2 with a large terrace and a children’s play area. The company will have a contract to run it for 40 years, and financial predictions are that in the first year, parking fees will bring in 1.9 million euros. 1.4 million euros from casual daily users and the remaining income from long term staff fees. To try to reduce the impact of the construction work, ideas are being put forward such as regular bus services from agreed pickup points, traffic lights on the main access roads programmed to stay green longer from 7.45am to 8.30am to reduce congestion and encouraging car sharing by staff. Areas nearby that can be converted to parking are being proposed, with a dedicated shuttle bus service. This is becoming urgent because the construction work is intended to be started in June.
The Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE), collect data (principally from the census that town halls have to provide every January 1st). It is analysed and various reports are published and one of them is the recent “Annual Population Report”. With regard to Almería province, more than 169,000 people have arrived here since 2001 which is 22.5% of the current population. This shows that Almeria province is one of the most demographically active provinces in Spain, due to the arrival of foreign
nationals or Spaniards returning here. The province currently has 753,364 inhabitants as of last January 1st and of these, 62,444 arrived between 2001 and 2010, another 60,276 between 2011 and 2020 and 46,926 from 2020 to 2024. The INE data counts those who began their residence in Spain during these years, including Spaniards born abroad, returnees born here, and nationals arriving from other autonomous communities. The proportion of citizens of foreign origin is in the majority, especially in coastal municipalities and agricultural areas. Almeria city, Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido, Níjar and Vera account for more than 60% of all new arrivals after the pandemic. Garrucha has 1,132 arrivals since 2021 and Mojácar has 883, towns that have consolidated a mixed profile between a foreign population who are in work and European and UK retirees. 2025 is expected to be a key year that will consolidate the structural change. The combination of climate, intensive agriculture, residential tourism increasing and more affordable housing than in other provinces, has made our province a magnet for nationals and foreigners.
There are two private hospitals in Almería city, the Vithas Group hospital (formerly Virgen del Mar) and the HLA Mediterráneo hospital, and other private specialist centres and clinics carry out procedures such as imaging and MIR scans. To cut down waiting times in the public hospitals, La Inmaculada in Huércal-Overa, the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city and the Poniente hospital in El Ejido, patients are being referred to the private ones for free diagnostic tests and minor operations. These are paid for by the Health Department of the Junta de Andalucía (SAS) and a “shock plan” was introduced last January, with a budget of 16 million euros. A second shock plan has now been unveiled with a budget of 17 million euros. The two private hospitals have standardised their prices and will each deal with specific operations in a “batch” procedure. Last year, the number of minor operations between the two was 2,127. The operations were for hernias, vasectomies, varicose veins, bunions, ligament repairs to knees, cataracts and fallopian tube procedures. As regards diagnostic treatment, the
SAS referred a total of 86,630 people for tests in 2024, an increase of 27% more than in 2023 when it was 68,267. Juan de la Cruz Belmonte is the Health Delegate of the Junta de Andalucía and he considers that, “We have seen a very significant reduction in Almeria province, highlighting this good coordination with private health to continue reducing waiting lists that has allowed a very significant increase during the second half of last year relating to noncomplex surgeries in the shortest possible time.” Other, more serious operations, are only carried out in the public hospitals. In reality, at the end of last year there were still just over 100,000 residents in Almería province waiting for a first consultation with a specialist, or surgery. Juan de la Cruz Belmonte considers that the exact figures are far fewer because some patients don’t turn up for a consultant appointment, decide not to have minor operation if they have been waiting a long time, or consider that they no longer need them, but they are still on the lists. The new shock plan is specifically designed to cut down the waiting time for seeing a consultant alongside minor surgery. There are proposals that consultants will see more patients during extended afternoon and early evening hours to get the numbers down. This will also help reduce congestion whilst the new car park is being built. In public hospitals, surgeons, operating staff and post recovery nursing staff, can voluntarily agree to carry out operations during the afternoons and on Saturdays, and they are paid the appropriate amount of overtime.
In 2024 the number of visits by cruise ships coming to Almería port went up by 54% compared to 2023, and this year is going to be another record year. Work has been completed to extend the moorings and there is a major project underway to integrate the port with the city, with better access for the passengers who disembark. Almería port is unique in that it is only a five-minute walk to the city centre. It was a trifle hectic from April 25th-27th when five cruise ships docked with one on Friday, three on Saturday and the final one on Sunday. Two of the ships were the ‘Star Clipper’ and the ‘Star Flyer’, two luxury sail-ships with four and five masts that
offer a classic and exclusive sailing experience. The ‘Scenic Eclipse’ and the ‘Emerald Sakara’ that docked on Friday and Saturday offer ultra-luxury cruises. On Sunday, the ‘Marina’, from the Oceania Cruise shipping company arrived with 1,400 passengers and 800 crew. Altogether, 2,000 passengers chose to disembark and some of them had pre-booked guided excursions to Almería castle, the Cathedral, the La Refugios Civil War tunnels and the Guitar Museum. There were also flamenco performances at two locations. Others chose coach trips to Roquetas de Mar, the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, or municipalities in the Levante such as Mojácar, Vera or Garrucha. Fabio Laborda is head of the Almeriport Bay Foundation (FBA) that organise the facilities on offer and he explained that these cruise ships discharged a predominance of American, Canadian and Australian tourists. Medium-size cruise ships tend to be luxury ones and many passengers had paid the equivalent of 10,000 euros for a seven-day cruise, had a high purchasing power and each of them typically spent on average between 250-300 euros. Businesses made up of restaurants, shops, flamenco organisations and tour operators make up the “Almería Cruise Friendly” organisation, specialise in being bi-lingual and operate at weekends and fiesta days if ships dock then. Fabio Laborda stated that this was only the second time that three cruise ships docked on the same day and the logistics in place could fully cope. Cruise ships often take on supplies or fuel apart from disembarking passengers and this had not been a problem. In March they had a “simulation” of three cruise ships arriving on the same day and ironed out any problems.

Mavel Point 360º Soundsystem Experience will also be on offer. More than thirty new names will be added to a lineup that continues to add surprises, forming one of the most attractive lineups in Dreambeach’s history, headlined by a visit from Will Smith, presenting his new studio album. The final installment of the event in 2024 exceeded all the festival’s expectations in its new location, with over 120,000 attendees. This anniversary edition has seen Dreambeach Festival become a benchmark festival, a cultural brand linked to the visibility of the city of Almería, while also taking great care of every aspect of its production. A new venue with spectacular structures will be created in its new space to create a high-level production with four independent stages, featuring national and international artists for three consecutive days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday).
A Japanese company, that adopted the trade name ‘Sony’, realised that the invention of transistors meant that portable “transistor radios” could be made. Their TR-63 model soon achieved millions of sales when first introduced in large quantities in the mid-1960s. On April 28th with no electricity, many millions of people in Spain turned to devices using batteries that had a radio. After they discovered where they had put them, sales of batteries broke
all records! Many families tuned in with candlelight, as this was the only way of finding out what had happened and bars owners put them on top of the bar, often when a customer had brought one in. People could listen to car radios of course, that was a big help when major roads particularly around Madrid became grid-locked for several hours, without any traffic lights. In the age of ultra-high technology, amazingly, transistor radios had a wide audience again.
A group of engineers, mechanical and civil, project managers and contract estimators make up the committee ‘Objetivo Almería AVE’ that regularly report on the progress of the AVE (high speed train) that will link Murcia city with Almería city. They presented their 7th assessment recently in the Cajamar auditorium at the ‘PITA’ Almería Science Park. They reported the progress in each of the 12 sections and concluded that in Almería province where there are six sections totalling 98kms, major work was at a good level of completion in the main, with specialised equipment working on most of the sections. They concluded that this “allows us to maintain a certain optimism regarding the completion deadlines”. They pointed out that when all the civil engineering has been completed the next phases are the laying of the track, electrification, signalling and testing by the Rail Safety Agency. This might take 12 months to be completed all the way from Murcia to Almería which is198kms. Various central government spokespersons have consistently claimed that all the work would be completed in time for the AVE to arrive at the station in Almería city in 2026. The committee consider that this is still completely out of the question and 2027 was a more likely date for all the work in our province and testing to be finished. However, there is no prospect of this being realistic, as regards the arrival of the trains in Almería city because of major delays on the Murcia sections, particularly the construction of the underground station at Lorca. The committee President, Jerónimo Parra, stated, “It is an urban work including a 3km tunnel, a very complex work and in addition, it was put out to tender very late. It has a projected completion deadline of December
2026 that will almost certainly not be met. From there, everyone should do the maths.” He explained that even if there was only 10 metres of unfinished work, the AVE would not become a reality, and their opinion was that 2028, even if all the sections in Almería province had been finished and fully tested by the end of 2027 was a likely arrival date. It is anticipated that work on the station at Vera, the only stopping point between the Lorca and Almería stations is scheduled to be started “soon”. As regards the “dry port” at Pulpí, financed by private companies, it is anticipated that by late 2027 the equivalent of 48 large lorry loads of goods will be put on freight trains four times a day.
Julia Ibáñez, is the spokesperson for the Commission of Industry, Energy and Mines in the Andalusian Parliament, run by the PP political party. She stated that Almeria was the last province to have the energy supply restored on April 29th “due to the lack of investment in infrastructure for electricity networks by the PSOE party in government in Spain.” She pointed out that there were areas of the province, especially in the Almanzora region, Levante and Los Vélez, where at 12 o’clock in the morning the electricity had not yet come back on. “Residents in these areas were very upset and inconvenienced because in other parts of Spain the supply had been restored hours ago, but they were still without electricity.” Part of the problem was because the Carboneras power station went out of service in December 2021.
The awarding of the environmental “blue flags” for beaches and ports / marinas was published on May 7th and Almería province has 35, three more than last year. They guarantee high standards in cleanliness, water quality, environmental management, accessibility, and public facilities. Mojácar has regained one flag, Cuevas del Almanzora has regained one lost in 2023, and Palomares has one. Our province has 249kms of coast, and 11 out of the 13 municipalities that share the coastline seek to attract tourists and residents with award winning flags for their beaches and ports. From
Adra to Pulpí, the town with the largest number of flags is Roquetas de Mar which has 6. Mojácar has 5 and Adra, El Ejido and Pulpí each have 4. Almeria city and Carboneras have 3, Níjar and Cuevas del Almanzora have 2 and Balanegra has 1. Níjar’s blue flags are at Aguamarga beach and San José port, and in Carboneras El Ancón, Los Barquicos-Cocones and Las Marinicas. In Mojácar they are El Cantal, El Descargar (regained) Lance Nuevo, Marina de la Torre and Venta del Bancal-Ventanicas. In Vera El Playazo, in Cuevas del Almanzora Pozo del Esparto, and in Palomares the Quitapellejos beach. Pulpí blue flags are at the Calypso, Los Nardos, Mar Rabiosa and Mar Serena beaches. The Blue Flag programme exists in 52 countries on 5 continents and at more than 5,000 locations. Spain, with a total of 749, has the most awards for beaches so 15% of the world’s blue flag beaches are located here, and we are in third place for ports / marinas. This year, the UK have 184 awards for beaches. Apart from the blue flags, there are awards with a “Q” flag that only applies to locations within Spain and have slightly less stringent requirements.
The partnership deal between President Trump and Ukraine to mine “Rare Earth Minerals” is designed to decrease the current 92% that has to be obtained from China. These critical materials are essential for the manufacture of technological products that are in daily use, mobile phones, computers, tablets, televisions and household appliances. They are needed by industries such as aerospace, renewable energy and digitalisation including AI. Very importantly, for the US and various EU countries, they are vital for the manufacture of defence items such as fighter aircraft and state-of-the-art naval ships. Brussels has drawn up a catalogue of the 34 most necessary raw minerals and 17 have been classified as strategic, including lithium, aluminium, silicon, gallium, manganese, germanium, graphite, titanium and boron. Andalucía has almost 2,000 exploration areas with deposits of 22 different strategic minerals considered fundamental. According to a study by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines many of them can be mined fairly easily. Only four mines are currently in
operation producing copper, strontium, fluorite and feldspar but many others that are not in operation at present, have been in use in the last decade and can be re-opened. The production of copper in Europe from Andalucía is only surpassed by Poland, and strontium mines in Granada province produce 99% of strontium used in Europe and 43% of the world’s production. Currently, the annual turnover of mining companies operating in Andalucía is close to 1.3 billion euros, with 8,500 jobs and it is anticipated that the EU will encourage the production of rare minerals with development grants. Andalucía is the first community in Spain to have a map drawn up that has been prepared in collaboration with the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute. This map identifies large numbers of areas with the potential of being mined for these rare mineral resources, including some sites in Almería province.
Spain has five nuclear power stations with seven reactors and there is a plan approved in 2019, and endorsed by the European Commission, to shut them all by 2035. One of them, the Almaraz reactor, is scheduled to shut in the autumn of 2027. The recent power blackout has resulted in calls for the closing to be reviewed as they can potentially supply about 20% of the energy needed. However, at the time of the blackout only four of the reactors were supplying any electricity as there is no way they can compete in cost with renewable energy, partly because of the high cost of the disposal of nuclear waste. The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, quickly pointed out that Spain was committed to increasing renewable energy and for safety reasons, nuclear plants did not assist in restoring any power after the blackout, until late during the following night. Renewable energy expert Xavier Cugat, has stated that during Easter, with high renewable energy, “Only two reactors were running properly because their electricity was too expensive.” Another problem is that if their life was increased there would be a very expensive cost from modernising them, that the owners of the power stations would have to absorb, as the government will not help them and state that there is no way that the cost could be passed on to consumers.
Justa few weeks ago, the idea that Spain, the UK and the EU would very strongly react against Israel’s invasion of Gaza was considered unthinkable. The renewed Israeli offensive has resulted in an alarmingly increasing number of fatalities and injuries with almost no hospitals operational. The complete blockade of aid and medicines has turned disquiet into active condemnation. Harrowing TV pictures show the repression and relocation of the residents of Gaza as being so extreme that it is described as genocide.
On Tuesday, May 20th the UK announced the ending of trade talks with Israel stating that their offensive was “extremism”, which is “dangerous, repellent, monstrous and must be condemned in the strongest terms”. On the same day in the Spanish Parliament the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, received enough votes to support an arms embargo. The EU announced that at the request of 17 of the member states it was reviewing a 2000 trade agreement because one of the articles is that “it will be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles.”
At the end of April, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior cancelled an order for 15 million bullets for use by the Guardia Civil Police. The Israeli government reacted harshly to the cancellation of the contract. “Israel strongly condemns the Spanish government’s decision by the Ministry of the Interior to unilaterally break a contract signed with the company IMI Systems and the announcement that it will refrain from future defence agreements with Israeli companies. The Spanish government is sacrificing security considerations for political purposes and continues to stand on the wrong side of history against the Jewish state that is defending itself from terrorist attacks on seven fronts.”
Orders in the pipeline are for the Silam highmobility rocket launcher for 576.4 million euros; the purchase of 168 Spike LR2 anti-tank missiles for 237 million and laser designators for fighter jets for 207.4 million. The Ministry of Defence maintains that the contracts are not placed directly with Israeli companies, although they acknowledge that “sometimes” the companies are intermediaries.
The development of the Silam rocket launcher has been awarded to the companies Escribano (EM&E) and Expal, owned by the German company Rheinmettall, which uses technology from the Israeli Elbit, “at present not replaceable”, according to the Spanish Ministry of Defence. The purchase of the anti-tank missiles has been entrusted to the firm Pap Tecnos, representative in Spain of the Israeli company Rafael, “also irreplaceable”. However, both these orders are awaiting final approval. The order for the laser designators, purchased directly from Rafael, was placed in April 2024. The Spanish SubDirectorate General for Armaments and Material Acquisitions claimed that the Israeli company was “the only one technically capable of fulfilling the requirement”.
Many of the contracts correspond to surveillance cameras, night vision goggles, anti-ballistic vests or portable X-ray systems that can be sourced elsewhere. The Elbit company is the technological partner of the new tactical radio program for the Spanish Army, valued at 350 million euros and approved in the Spanish Parliament as part of the plan to reach 2% of GDP in military spending this year.
The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares has stated, “the entry of humanitarian aid must be immediate. I demand access to food and medicines. For the most basic humanity, we must end the war and achieve the two-state solution. We are not resigned to violence. Peace is possible. The permanent ceasefire and the release of the hostages cannot be delayed.” Irael is being increasingly isolated.
The term “largest” can be interpreted multiple ways. One church may be the largest in terms of indoor seating capacity, another may be the largest in terms of interior floor area or weekly attendance. St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican City) is the largest church in the world by interior area and known capacity and it was constructed over 120 years from 1506 to 1626. St. Peter’s has an interior area of 15,160 m², an exterior area of 21,095 m², and a visitor capacity of 60,000 people, more than that of many football stadiums. For comparison, the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles is the largest stadium in the US seating 56,000 people.
In the US, “John Doe” is the name given to a dead body whose identity is unknown. If the body that cannot be identified is female, they are referred to as “Jane Doe”. In actual fact, the name goes back to the 14th century. If there was a land dispute in the UK, the party making the claim could choose to be anonymous and use the name John Doe. The person defending the dispute could choose to be known as Richard Doe. In the US, the landmark 1973 abortion cases were Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton with anonymous plaintiffs. In UK courts, the legal terms of a “John Doe injunction” or a “John Doe order” are still used.
Mosquitoes are the biggest predator in humans, and the female mosquito that bites people is estimated to have killed 45 million people, but the male mosquito only bites plants. Fatalities are caused because a mosquito can carry as many as 100 potentially fatal diseases that include malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, encephalitis and elephantiasis. In 1877 a British doctor linked elephantiasis with mosquito bites and in 1894 it was proven that malaria was spread in the same way. The Asian tiger mosquito that is considered very dangerous is larger than a normal one and thought to have arrived in Spain in 2004 on a banana ship.
If something is so untidy that it is considered to be chaotic it is known as a shambles. Also, if an event is very badly organised, we call that a shambles. It comes from the Saxon word “scamel” and in the 15th century was used for a stall selling meat, and then a street in a town such as York with many butcher shops and a market. By the end of the day, they were usually littered with the remnants of unwanted meat, scavenging dogs, unwanted wrappings and had become a general mess, so referred to as being a shambles. In the 16th century the word was used for a slaughterhouse and a shambles meant a place of slaughter and bloodshed.
An average bar of chocolate contains 10 times the amount of phenol as an orange. Phenols inhibit blood clots by thinning the blood so the heart needs less effort to pump the blood which reduces pressure, and less clots reduces the chance of having heart attacks. Scientists say that 1.5 ounces / 43 grammes of dark chocolate, not milk chocolate, has the same phenol intake as two glasses of red wine. Dark chocolate stimulates the production of endorphins and serotonin, the feel-good hormones, that helps lift your mood with less stress. Dark chocolate is also good for people with diabetes, arthritis and some cancers.
Known as ‘Timpani’, kettledrums are musical instruments belonging to the percussion family as they are hit with drumsticks. Arabic writings from the 10th century AD mention varieties of large and small kettledrums. The earliest known pictures of large, deep kettledrums date from 12th century Mesopotamia. All of them have a skin that is stretched tightly over the top of the traditional hemispherical shape of the drum. They are used in bands, and those in symphony orchestras are made of polished copper. A percussion player will normally play two of them. Tightening the skin gives different musical notes.
Last January, Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s PSOE party Prime Minister, put forward 12 major proposals to increase the availability and affordability of renting a property. It is undisputed that this is one of the biggest problems in Spain, particularly for young people.
One of his proposals was a tax of up to 100% for non-EU property purchasers who are not legal residents in Spain. He stated that “non-EU nationals bought 27,000 properties in 2023, not to live in, but to make money from them, something that in the context of scarcity we cannot afford.” Financial analysts immediately explained that the 100% was only a doubling of the current applicable taxes that are 10% IVA (VAT) on new properties and transfer and stamp duty taxes on second-hand properties, payable to each autonomous community. In Andalucía they are 7% and 1.2% respectively. A tax expert stated that the 10% IVA couldn’t be changed, and as many autonomous communities are run by the PP political party, in opposition, they were unlikely to agree to their tax being doubled.
On May 22nd, Pedro Sánchez returned to his January proposals in a draft bill to be debated in parliament. The bombshell announcement is that a new tax will be levied, an “Impuesto Complementario Estatal sobre la Transmisión de Bienes Inmuebles a no Residentes en la Unión Europea” that translates as “A State Complementary Tax on the Transfer of Real Estate to non-Residents of the European Union” so it will not apply to EU nationals and it will not apply to legal residents in Spain who purchase properties. The tax is specified as “se obtendrá aplicando a la base imponible el tipo de gravamen del cien per ciento” that is a 100% tax on the applicable tax base, that is the purchase price of the property.
Analysts looking at the draft bill state that as the government cannot change the 10% IVA on new properties it only applies to second-hand properties, after the transfer and stamp duty tax has
been allowed for. In Andalucía it would be a state tax of 91.8% of the purchase price and the three taxes added up are the 100% tax.
The reason given for this is that the purchase of houses by “foreigners”, often with greater purchasing power than Spanish buyers, results in higher property prices and a reduced number. Another claim is that non-EU nationalities buy 50% of houses costing more than 500,000 euros which inflates the housing market.
UK citizens are the biggest non-EU buyers of Spanish property, particularly in coastal regions such as Valencia, the Balearic Islands and of course Andalucía, including Almería province. This amounted to 1.2% of purchases in 2024 including those by UK residents living in Spain. Another 5% of purchasers were by Russians, Americans, Chinese and other nationalities, mostly from Latin America.
Pedro Sánchez and his PSOE political party do not have a majority in parliament. They have to rely on MPs from some of the eight other political parties agreeing to pass any laws. This may be a huge problem and the 100% tax may not be approved. Another financial analyst suggests that a tax of 10% to 20% may be the final amount, to protect the property market from a slump and keep nonEU nationals wanting to buy properties in Spain. At present, there is no timescale. Legal experts believe that the extra tax might be slung out after appeals to the Spanish Supreme court, or EU tribunals, because they unfairly discriminate against these purchasers.
April
28th was a normal day in Spain, a working day with sunshine and some wind. “Red Eléctrica de España” is Spain’s National Grid entity and every evening they work out the likely demand for electricity over the 24hrs of the next day. They decide how much they are going to pay every hour, from the available “pool” of energy sources.
Spain and Portugal are unique as they have minimal electricity connections to the rest of Europe, unlike France that has interconnection to Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and the UK. Any major supply problems in one of these countries can be covered by the other ones. The EU asked Spain and France to be 10% interconnected by 2020 and 15% by 2030, but it is only 3.8%.
In Spain, renewable energy comes from solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and hydroelectric dams and then nuclear and combined cycle (gas and steam) power stations. The available electricity from renewable energy sources is very high and quite often it has covered 100% of the demand, as it did for 9 hours on May 16th, 2023. During 2024 it provided 57% with a 2030 target of 81%.
The high voltage, dropped down to 220 volts distributed to users in Spain at substations, has to be kept steady with minimum peaks or troughs and the frequency of 50Hz has to be “exactly” 50Hz.
At 12.19pm on the 28th there was a blip in frequency at the Málaga substation that went up to 50.1Hz. At 12.32pm Red España was obtaining 59% of electricity from solar, 11% from wind, 10% from dams, 11% nuclear and 3.8% combined cycle with small amounts from other sources totalling 25GW (25 million watts). At 12.33pm the Granada substation went offline, followed 15 seconds later by the Badajoz one on the Portuguese border and the Seville one a second after this, but all of them were only supplying 2.2GW. This caused a cascade of further failures with others switched off to protect the system. Power going to France was cut
off to protect their energy network, and Portugal lost their 30% of energy from Spain. Exactly what caused the initial problems and the inability to overcome them is the overriding question.
Restoring the supply is very complicated and has to be done slowly. Starting with some electricity obtained from France and Morocco, the output from combined cycle power stations was slowly increased to 500% above normal, hydroelectric power by 200%, with some nuclear power and a 50% reduction in solar power. Red España stated that 61% of power was back on at midnight, 77% at 2am, 87% at 4am, 99.5% at 7am and 100% at 11.30am, but in some parts of our province it was midday. They claimed that the resumption in the supply had been done “very quickly” and as a comparison, a total electrical blackout in North America in 2003 lasted for up to five days in the US and seven in Canada, and one in Texas in 2021 lasted for two weeks. Because there was no electricity at the Carboneras desalination plant, some municipalities in the Almanzora region were without water.
The very high use of electricity from combined cycle power stations meant that the cost to users in Spain on the variable hour PVPC tariff went from an average of 18 euros per megawatt hour (MW/h) on the 28th to a peak of 117 euros at 7am8am on the 30th when major industries started up again. (1 MW/h is a 1,000-watt appliance on for one hour).

We are so lucky to have such fabulous volunteers. A massive well done to Helen and her friend Karen. They recently completed the first stage of Camino de Santiago and raised a whopping 1860 euros for our cats and dogs. It would be great to get them to 2,000 euros (just 140 euros more) in recognition of their hard work, steps clocked up, blisters, exhaustion and planning –all to help our wonderful furries. Here’s the link to help them get to that “magic number”. Great achievement ‘ladies’. Now feet up and rest for a while. What’s the next adventure? https://gofund.me/e3a278ab
Stuart and Adam, who recently represented PAWSPATAS at the ‘Alternative Miss Mojácar’, in aid of 5 charities. 787 euros was raised for the 5 charities, and with additional sponsorship, Stuart and Adam have donated 257.50 euros to PAWS-PATAS. A fun and ‘alternative’ night was enjoyed by all!

Two Los Bandidos participated in the 12th Half Triathlon de Sevilla on Sunday 4th May 2025. It was the first time at this distance for both Mark and Patricia, who swam 1900m, cycled 80km and ran 21km.
As the sun came up the swim got underway from the rowing club with the men and women swimming in opposite directions. Then it was on to the bike, with a 20k section followed by a 30k loop twice, finishing going across the Puente de Alamillo. The run section went along the banks of the river, past the Huevo del Colon and through the Parque de Alamillo, twice! Apart from a bit
of wind on the bike, the weather was ideal, sun, cloud and no rain! A small Bandido Support Crew cheered and encouraged the triathletes to the finish!
The winner finished in 3:42:25 with the first lady in 4:21:38. 404 triathletes crossed the finish line. All competitors received a medal, commemorative sweatshirt, post race drinks and snacks and a very welcome but painful message!

A system of audio guides is now accessible directly from QR codes on signs at the beach area. Mojácar town hall has announced, “This initiative allows users to listen in several languages to the history of the main monuments and corners of the old town: the Santa María Church, the City Gate, the Public Fountain, the Castle Viewpoint, the Plaza Nueva Viewpoint, the Indalo, Mariquita
la Posá, the Moors and Christians Festivities and the Mojácar origin of Walt Disney. By simply scanning a QR code from their mobile phone, tourists can take an audio tour while relaxing on the sand, promoting curiosity and the desire to visit the historic centre of the municipality. With this action we want to remind our visitors that Mojácar is much more than sun and beach. Our heritage, our history and our essence also deserve to be discovered, and now we are making it available to everyone from the most visited place: the beach.”
Mojácar town hall have announced that the defensive Moorish Pirulico Tower, adjacent to the Macenas beach, is now open to the public following the completion of the restoration work. The project that has cost 16,575 euros has consolidated the tower’s upper skylight, improved accessibility with the installation of new handrails, and incorporated efficient solar lighting. Francisco García Cerdá, Mayor of Mojácar, stated “Restoring and preserving the Pirulico Tower is not only an institutional responsibility, but also an act of respect for our history and our identity. With these works, Mojácar takes another step forward in its commitment to a sustainable tourism model, where heritage is the focus. Now, this icon is once again an accessible, safe place, ready to continue exciting those who visit us.”

On Friday, June 6th at 11am in the village, Moors and Christian troops discharge their muskets. At midday, the troops parade with their banners to the Plaza Nueva, along with the municipal band and at 1.30pm food is available from village restaurants. At 7pm troops gather outside the Centro de Usos Múltiples (the former Artisan centre) and at 8.30pm at the Fuente (fountain) the keys to the village are given to a representative of the Christian troops. At 9pm all the troops march to the village with bands, fireworks and gunfire. At 9.30pm the troops enter the village with speeches and at 10pm the camps that serve drinks are opened until 5am.
On Saturday 6th at 5pm musketeers gather on the beach opposite the Pueblo Indalo with a horse and dressage parade with gunfire from the sea and land, near the bar Ankara. A medieval tournament takes place to capture scarves put up by ladies from both sides and this is followed by a procession to the Red Cross with several bands. At
9.30pm the camps in the village open until 5am.
On Sunday at midday troops meet on the beach near the Commercial Centre and discharge muskets. The main parade starts from the top of the village at 6.30pm down to the Fuente. Medieval markets in the village are open from 6pm-11pm on Thursday, 11am-3am on Friday and Saturday, and 11am-10pm on Sunday.
Open Mic Night alternate Thursdays at Miraflores, Los Gallardos, kick off at 8pm. Everyone welcome.

A 15-year-old Amish boy and his father went into a big shopping centre. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny silver walls that moved apart and then slid back together again. The boy asked, “What is this, Father?” He responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in all my life, I don’t know what it is.” While the boy and his father were watching, a fat old lady in a wheelchair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched small numbers above the wall light up in order. After a pause, they came down in the reverse order. Finally, the walls opened again, and a gorgeous 24-year-old blonde stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son....“Go get your mother.”
Sandy and Norman were in despair. Their threeyear-old son Timmy still had not learned how to talk. One night at dinner, Timmy took a taste of his pie, and to their utter surprise and amazement, said: “You call this a pie? It tastes like some tasteless mush!”. Sandy and Norman sat there in shock, for this was not just their son’s first sentence, but the first words he had ever uttered! Once the initial shock had subsided, Norman asked, “Tell me Timmy, how come you never spoke before? “The food has always been fine until now,” said Timmy.
You can’t imagine the pain I felt when my wife told me that the beautiful little 5-yearold boy sitting in our kitchen wasn’t really my son. I definitely need to pay more attention at kindergarten pickup.
The Lord’s Prayer Colonel Sanders of KFC called up the Pope and asks him for a favour. “What can I do for you?” asked the Pope. The Colonel said, “Holy father, I need you to change the Lord’s prayer from, ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily fried chicken’. If you do, I will donate 10 million dollars to the Vatican.” The Pope replied, “I am very sorry. It is the Lord’s prayer, and it isn’t possible to change the words.” So, the Colonel, disappointed, hung up. After another month of bad sales, the Colonel called again. “Listen your Excellency. I really need your help. I’ll donate 50 million dollars if you change the words to ‘Give us this day our daily fried chicken.’” The Pope responded, “It is very tempting, Colonel Sanders. The church could do a lot of good with that much money. It would help us to support many charities. But, again, I must decline. It is the Lord’s prayer, and I can’t change it.” So, the Colonel gave up again. After two more months of terrible sales, the Colonel got desperate. “This is my final offer, your Excellency. If you change the words I will donate 100 million dollars to the Vatican.” The Pope replied, “Let me get back to you.” Next day, the Pope called together some of his cardinals and said, “I have some good news, and I have some bad news. The good news is that KFC is going to donate 100 million dollars to the Vatican.” The cardinals were delighted, but one of them asked what the bad news was. The Pope replied, “The bad news is that we will lose the Wonder Bread account.”
Jerry was in the hospital recovering from surgery when a nurse asks him how he was feeling. “I’m OK, but I didn’t like the fourletter-word the doctor used when he was operating on me.” “What did he say?” asked the nurse. The man replied, “He said ‘OOPS!’”
Sam walks into his boss’s office. “Sir, I’ll be straight with you, I know the economy isn’t great, but I have three companies after me, and I would like to respectfully ask for a raise.”
After a few minutes of haggling the boss finally agrees to a 10% raise, and Sam happily gets up to leave. “By the way”, asks the boss, “Which three companies are after you?” Sam replied, “The electric company, the water company, and the phone company.”
Sam heard all about the great service in the “Sleep Fine Hotel”, so after dropping his stuff in his room, he excitedly headed down to the hotel lounge. He was only there for a few minutes when a beautifully dressed waitress came over to him. “Would you like something to drink?” she asked. Sam took in a deep breath, looked around at the beautiful lobby and asked, “What are my choices?” The woman’s gave Sam a strange look, and responded “Yes or no!”
Teacher: “If you had one dollar and you asked your father for another, how many dollars would you have?” Vincent: “One dollar.” Teacher: “You don’t know your arithmetic.” Vincent: “You don’t know my father.”
Joe was a steward for High Fly airlines. He watched as an older lady boarded the plane with a dog in a cage. “Excuse me,” said Joe “Dogs are not allowed on board, you have to check it in with the cargo.” The lady wasn’t happy, but Joe was an experienced steward and succeeded in convincing her without much of a scene. Upon arrival, Joe took a peek in the cage, and to his great surprise, saw that the dog was dead! Frantic that they may get sued, Joe quickly sent one of his underlings out to buy a dog that looked exactly the same. Just in the nick of time he arrived with another dog and they quickly switched them, breathing a sigh of relief. “This isn’t my dog!” said the lady as soon as she saw it. “I’m sure it is,” insisted Joe “I was very careful about where I put it.” “It’s definitely not my dog” argued the lady, “I am bringing my dead dog to my home town to have him buried, and this dog is alive!”
“Sir you have got to help!” said the tearful man at the door of a man he knew was very rich. “There is a family that I know very well that is in desperate need of money. The father has been out of a job for over a year and they have five kids at home with barely a bite of food to eat. The worst part is, that they are about to be kicked out of the house and they will be left on the streets without a roof over their heads!” “Well,” said the rich man, “That really is a sad story. Why don’t you come inside and we’ll talk about it.” “So how much money is needed exactly?” asked the man when they were both seated. “Oh, it’s really terrible”, said the man, “Just for the rent they owe, it’s 3000 dollars that they have to pay by tomorrow, otherwise they’ll be kicked out onto the streets.” “How do you know so much about this family?” asked the rich man as he reached for his cheque book. “Well,” said the other man “I’m their landlord.”
