Visual Theatre - Paley Arts Centre

For the second consecutive year, Paley Art Center presents the Academy for Visual Theatre, an inspiring initiative dedicated to bringing the art of visual theater to diverse audiences in Jerusalem. This project extends beyond traditional art education; it serves as a catalyst for community enrichment and creative expression. By engaging participants of all ages with visual theater, the Academy fosters a unique environment where individuals can explore new perspectives, pose thought-provoking questions, and discover innovative forms of selfexpression. Through this dynamic interaction with visual art, the Academy not only broadens participants’ artistic horizons but also strengthens communal ties and ignites creativity within the heart of the community.

The performing arts encompass a wide range of forms, including classical theater, live performance, and experimental theater. By concentrating on visual theater, the Paley Art Center aligns seamlessly with its expertise in visual arts, creating a multidisciplinary environment that integrates various media within the realms of arts and design. This focus allows the Center to blend traditional and innovative approaches, enriching its offerings and fostering a dynamic dialogue between different artistic disciplines.

Although a year might not be sufficient for an enriching a complex educational and life experience, the results of this experience are evident through the participants: children are observed to perceive the space in a new and visual way, become more curious about their environment, and ask more questions; youths express their emotions and dreams in inspiring and enriching creative ways; while the adults start to establish a strong foundation for this art in the city.

The project forms an important and rich cultural bridge that allows all participants to experience creativity in ways that profoundly impact their personal and social lives. Through this project, the Paley Art Center operates as a vital center for culture and arts in Jerusalem, contributing to the flourishing and development of a cohesive and creative community.

Roles

In life, characters play various roles at different times and events. Will we find clear answers?

Truth and falsehood, the familiar and the strange, the real and the imaginary, the tangible and the intangible.

What happens when you discover that everything we believed to be reality is, in fact, an illusion?

The Last Lunch

In an unfamiliar world, some characters seek the truth while others conceal it. The past is evoked, and fear of the future looms over. The surface carries an unexpected depth.

Words resonate with movement.

Imagination takes center stage.

The space speaks.

Words bear multiple meanings. Questions are repeated.

Voices are liberated.

We question the motivations behind the characters' actions. Answers will emerge, but when and how that is the question.

Linguistic Game

Eyes gaze at the ceiling, oscillating between acceptance and rejection, between emptiness and fullness. Participants attempt to weave unexpected connections between space, body, and human experience using everyday materials to create formative moments. The plot centers on behavioral existence and our unique ways of perception. We sleep, stand, sit, run, and fear—this is our general behavior.

In Between

Participants engage in an ongoing game where each individual strives to create spaces and explore patterns of existence in various ways, oscillating between restriction and permission, between speech and action. On stage, a unique world is constructed, discovered through our body language, passing through to objects and expressions from our family life, and familiar elements from our daily lives. Together, they map out, with subtle humor and profound humanity, an emotional landscape of disappointment and hope.
