Annual Report 2021/2022

All Saints Episcopal School is a community dedicated to academic excellence in a secure and supportive Christian environment.

From The Head of School A

t the end of May 2021, we began making plans to have visitors and guests on campus as well as in-person events during the 2021-2022 school year. The pandemic, however, flared up in our community and those plans were temporarily placed on hold. Once again, we rose to the challenge of finding ways to ensure our students received the full value of an All Saints experience, steeped in tradition, while blending virtual and in-person activities and events.

Through it all, we found many silver linings.

• Live-streaming chapel, athletics and other campus activities.

• Seeing the benefit of hosting campus events in different locations.

• Establishing new strategies for carpool efficiency and dropping off forgotten items for students. These things and more will become new traditions appreciated by families, students and faculty far into the future.

In the pages that follow you will see how we adapted some of our beloved traditions like the Christmas Pageant and Grandparents and Special Friends Day to allow visitors to safely be on campus. Witness ways that we took full advantage of our beautiful grounds to host events and activities on campus, like the middle school production of Lion King, Jr. and our pep rallies. And, by the spring, our dream for re-opening the campus became a reality.

As the old adage says, adversity is the greatest teacher. The lessons we learned, the adjustments we made, and the new strategies we created would not have been possible if not for the challenges faced in this second year of limitations driven by COVID. The blessings we received from the struggles of this past year far outweigh the hardships endured. Just as the phoenix rose from the ashes, our school community has emerged stronger, learned to work smarter, and has continued to move forward in our perpetual pursuit of excellence.

H I am grateful for our fabulous faculty and staff who have risen to the challenges of this unprecedented time, going above and beyond to provide our students with love and support and the tools they need to be successful in their future.

OUR

PRAYER

Father in heaven, whose son Jesus Christ took children into His arms and blessed them; Bless, we pray, the students of All Saints School. Grant that we may grow up reverently in your love; Give us day by day strength and guidance, so that we may continue in your love and service until our lives end. Grant this, for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

H I am grateful for the continued hard work and support of our ASPA and our Board of Trustees whose efforts once again humbled me with their commitment and dedication to the mission of our school.

H I am grateful for our families who support us with their prayers, gifts, and talents and who confidently choose us each year to provide a strong spiritual and educational foundation for their precious children.

H And, most of all, I am grateful for God’s grace throughout these challenging pandemic years and for the assurance that no matter what comes our way He will provide us with strength, guidance, and a path forward into the next 68 years!

Be Blessed,

OUR MISSION
01 ANNUAL REPORT 2021 - 2022 ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

From The Board Of Trustees President

As I enter my third year as the President of the Board of Trustees, I am proud to report on the successes yielded from the continued partnership between the Board and the Administration. This collaboration is long-standing and is known to be the driver for our innovation and leadership in the community. A highlight of this partnership can be found in our new Director of Auxiliary Programs. This position was created after years of research and discussions with our families on how to better meet their needs while enriching their All Saints experience. Through our membership with the National Business Officers Association (“NBOA”), we discovered the Summer Programs and Auxiliary Revenue Collaborative (“SPARC”) who ultimately educated the Administration and Board of Trustees on the importance of a thriving auxiliary program in independent schools. SPARC’s services have proved invaluable as they helped us define our goals and strategies for bolstering our auxiliary programming and assisted us in recruiting our new director, Travis Walker. SPARC continues to work with Travis in growing our auxiliary programming which will serve our families throughout the years and set us apart in the local community. We are truly excited about this endeavor and cannot wait to see what the future holds!

As always, we could not do any of this without the continued support of our families, friends, volunteers and donors. I stand in awe of the countless hours of support and the generous monetary donations we continue to receive that helps us reach our goals year after year. As a parent of two graduates, I feel blessed to have had this support for the thirteen years my children attended All Saints Episcopal School. The ultimate success of any independent school relies on this support and you never let us down. It has been my pleasure to serve and I am proud of what we have accomplished.

Black History Month

All Saints celebrated Black History Month by inviting special friends of our community as guest speakers during chapel. As we were still under specific COVID-19 restrictions during the month of February, chapel services were livestreamed into the classroom from our green screen studio located within the Calcote Library and Discovery Center. As a special treat for our students, one grade level was allowed to be an audience in the library for each guest speaker. We are grateful for the profoundly meaningful, inspirational, and uplifting messages provided by our guests!

Summer 360

All Saints is profoundly dedicated to serving the needs of our families, and interested in meeting the year-round needs of our students. This dedication led to our partnership with SPARC, Summer Programs and Auxiliary Revenue Collaborative, which is a group of auxiliary program experts who help independent schools effectively add value to the experiences of their families. In January of 2022, SPARC assisted in the recruitment of our very own Director of Auxiliary Programs, Travis Walker. Charged with the task of creating robust programming for All Saints students, Mr. Walker hit the ground running making improvements to Club All Saints, the after-school care program, and re-designed our summer programming as Summer 360. He worked hard to unify our two previous summer programs, Summer Explorers and Summer Club, to better meet the needs of our community and streamline operations. Summer 360 became a 9-week summer program with on-campus camps, as well as fun and engaging child care offered for extended hours. Additionally, Mr. Walker transitioned summer registration and payments to an online system which was a monumental accomplishment appreciated by all! Looking forward, he is working on several new efforts to best serve our families including after school enrichment classes (Enrichment 360) and holiday camps (Thanksgiving 360 and Christmas 360). We look forward to the continued efforts of Travis Walker to create the kind of experiences geared towards enhancing the value proposition for our families, while once again differentiating All Saints from every other school community in Southeast Texas!

Athletics

The All Saints Vikings proudly celebrated another successful year of athletics. As the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, we welcomed spectators back in the stands to cheer on our dedicated athletes!

Volleyball Both volleyball teams finished their season on high notes.

Our “B” team finished their season with a record of 6-3 and our “A” team finished their season with a league record of 8-1 and placed first in our league. This was our 6th time to place first overall since 1990!

soccer We finished with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses. This was good for 2nd place overall in our league. We were a very young team this year. We will only lose three 8th graders next year so the future is looking bright for this program.

gIrls basketball “A” team ended with a record of 9 wins and 1 loss.

This made us the champions of our league! Our “B” team finished with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses. They were a younger team and it will be exciting to watch them develop over the next few years.

boys basketball Both “A” and “B” teams finished up their season playing some strong basketball. The “A” team finished with a league record of 8 wins and 4 losses which placed us 3rd in the league. The “B” team finished with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses which placed them 2nd in the league.

softball The softball team had an outstanding season. They competed hard all year and finished with a record of 8 wins and 1 loss and were league champions for the first time since 2014! A majority of the team was made of 6th and 7th graders so this is a trend these girls hope to continue in the upcoming years.

tennIs Coach Russell Grogan and the tennis team had great success on the courts. They won 13 out of the possible 20 medals in tournaments this year. We had four 1st place singles, one 2nd place single, 5 first place doubles and three 2nd place doubles.

golf This was the best golf team that All Saints has fielded in the last 5 years. Our golfers won 29 out of the possible 60 medals and would have won two of the tournaments outright if points were still tracked and the league considered golf a team sport.

Viking Theater Under The Stars!

For the first time in the history of All Saints, our middle School drama students performed their spring musical outdoors. The life-like animals from The Lion King, Jr. were even more realistic staged in the outside courtyard in front of the 3rd5th grade building. The night air was filled with the sights and sounds of the African landscape, as well as rousing applause from the enthusiastic audience members. COVID-19 has taught us many things, but one thing is for sure: nothing can keep our students from performing in front of a packed crowd. Inside or outside… The show must go on!

Culture Festival

The All Saints 2022 Culture Festival, originally slated for a week in February, was moved to the week of April 19-22, hoping for a higher probability of hosting guests on campus as we anticipated COVID-19 restrictions would be lifted in the late spring. Our dreams came true as we welcomed visitors, parents, and international performers to our first Culture Festival Street Fair, with indoor exhibitions in the Gym and live presentations on stage outside. Special thanks to analida ngraham Culture Festival Chair, and her outstanding committee for their patience, faithfulness, and flexibility in hosting this week-long celebration! Special thanks also to Nele schildermans for producing our fabulous Culture Festival promotional video which can be viewed using the QR Code provided.

All Saints was fortunate to encounter this perfectly timed, international, surprise visit by our 2019-2020 Culture Festival Chair Sarah Tancock, husband Stephen, and former students Emily

Curriculum Report

This year we celebrated our 8th graders, athletic teams, thespians, and competition students in the first annual All Saints Awards Assembly. Held in the gym during the school day, parents and students were present to recognize the many accomplishments of our middle schoolers. In addition to the athletics, drama, and 8th grade

Future Problem Solving

The Future Problem Solving Team participated in the FPS State Bowl in Waco, TX and all received medals. Niels de Meyer, seventh grader, competed as an Individual and was a semifinalist in the Middle Division. There were two sixth grade teams that competed in the Junior Division. Ian Beall Teague Hanning, Winston Jepson, and Mason Matheny won Most Futuristic Team with their out-of-the-box solutions. Finley Fisher, Hampton Kelleher, and Benjamin McCormick worked as a three person team and placed 7th. Sixth grader Waylan Snider competed as an individual in the Junior Division and won first place. He represented the State of Texas at the International Conference on the University of Massachusetts campus and competed against students from around the world on the subject of Antibiotic Resistance. Waylan placed second in this worldwide competition.

patriot’s pen essay

The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, a VFW sponsored youth essay competition, gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. The theme for 2021-2022 was How Can I Be a Good American? Seventh grader, Piper Lewis was our campus winner and was awarded a gift card by the local VFW chapter. Her essay moved on to be part of the national level contest.

Volunteer Hours

At All Saints, students in 7th and 8th grade are required to earn a minimum of 10 service hours. Due to the pandemic, that requirement was waived for the last two years. This year we were pleased to once again make service to others in the community and here at school a priority. As an 8th grade class, they logged 724 service hours, which is more than double the minimum requirement. Five 8th graders, Joshua Allen, Averly Hubbard, Jordyn Snure Zarrya Thornhill and Hadlee Treme were recognized for going above and beyond the requirement of 10 service hours. Each of them logged in over 45 hours of service during their 8th grade year.

carson scholar

Samuel Williams was recognized as the first All Saints Carson Scholar, due to the generous donation to the Carson Scholar Fund by Mr. Gene Badgett, our former band director. Samuel was awarded a scholarship to be used toward his college education. The Carson Scholar fund was begun in 1994 by Dr. Ben Carson and his wife to support the educational success of students who were recognized as scholars. Dr. Carson is a retired Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurosurgeon and former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
