Mit unserem diesjährigen Leitthema anima mundi richten wir den Blick auf unseren Planeten als kostbaren Lebensraum und folgen Goethes Aufruf „Weltseele, komm‘ uns zu durchdringen!“ Die weltweiten Konsequenzen des leichtfertigen Umgangs mit wertvollen Ressourcen und des fehlenden Bewusstseins globaler Zusammenhänge werden vermehrt spürbar.

Die verbindende Kraft der Musik wirkt als Lebenselixier und erweitert in bedeutenden Werken zahlreicher Komponistinnen und Komponisten unseren Blickwinkel. Sie inspiriert uns zu Erkenntnissen und Taten, die uns der Vision einer friedvollen und nachhaltigen Zukunft für die Menschheit näherbringen sollen.

In der 46. Saison von Allegro Vivo öffnen wir mit Begeisterung die Tore der diesjährigen Sommerakademie und freuen uns auf über 450 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer aus aller Welt!

With this year’s main theme, anima mundi, we turn our attention to our planet as a precious habitat and following Goethe’s call “World-soul, come to fill our lives!” The careless use of valuable resources and the lack of awareness of global connections bring forth major consequences worldwide.

The unifying power of music serves as a precious chalice of life and allows us to perceive broader perspectives through important works of numerous composers. It inspires us toward insights and action and helps us to achieve a longed-for vision of a peaceful and sustainable future for humanity on this earth.

In the 46th season of Allegro Vivo, we are excited to open the doors of this year’s Summer Academy and look forward to welcoming over 450 participants from all over the world!

Thomas Fheodoroff

Since 2006 professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Soloist, chamber musician, concertmaster and conductor. For 25 years member of Concertus Musicus Vienna – founded by N. Harnoncourt. 2000–2019 concertmaster of Wiener Akademie, Baroque Orchestra and Hofkapelle Stuttgart. Furthermore, concertmaster at chamber orchestra Munich, Camerata Salzburg and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Concert in Europe, Japan, USA and Middle East. Permanent Juror of the “International Nikolaus Fheodoroff Composition Prize”. Wide range as musician – from intensive work with “early music” including performing practice and historical sources to contemporary music. 2004 founding “Prisma Vienna – ensemble for Music”, which is working on all nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven since 2015.

Sophia Jaffé

Since 2011 professor at Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. Soloist with renowned orchestras, as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Konzerthausorchester in Berlin, the chamber orchestras of Stuttgart, Munich and Heilbronn and the National Symphony Orchestra in Brussels. Concerts with conductors such as M. Janowski, W. Weller, Z. Macal, Sir M. Elder, D. R. Davies. Guest at numerous international festivals. Wide-ranging repertoire of 70 works. Numerous live recordings and radio productions. In 2009 debut CD with B. Lehmann, in 2014 CD with J. Casken’s violin concert with Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra. Prizewinner of competitions such as the Leopold Mozart Competition in Augsburg, the Concours de Genève, first prize in the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb. Studied with H. Krebbers in Amsterdam and with St. Picard at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin.

Andreas Janke

Professor for violin at Zurich University of the Arts. First concert master at Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra und Belgian National Orchestra. Performances at Palais des Beaux-Arts Brussels, Dvoˇrák Hall Prague and Konzerthaus Vienna among others. Soloist and chamber musician at several festivals. CD with works by Schubert, together with Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich. Part of the Oliver Schnyder Trio. Prizewinner of international competitions such as Queen Elizabeth Competition Brussels, Franz Kreisler Vienna and “Prague Spring”. Several scholarships from “Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes” and “Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben”. Studied at University Mozarteum Salzburg under I. Ozim. He plays a violin from Carlo Bergonzi “Hozier, Andrews” 1733–39.

Founder of Academia Allegro Vivo, founder and until 2016 artistic director of the festival Allegro Vivo. Former concertmaster of the Tonkuenstler Orchestra. Founder and honorary president of GLOBArt. Decorated with the great golden award of honor of the state of Lower Austria. Early debut as a soloist, founder of the Eurasia Quartet, Grand Prix and first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Colmar, France, in 1971. International concert tours as a soloist. Numerous CD-, radio- and TV recordings. 1981–1990 artistic director of the Chamber Music Festival in Umeå (Sweden), initiator and artistic director of the Badener Beethoventage 1980–1986. 2021 Culture Prizewinner of Lower Austria, Awarding of the Appreciation Prize, Category Music. Completed his studies at the Academy of Music Vienna under Prof. Morawec, Steinbauer and Samohyl.

Vahid Khadem-Missagh

Since 2016 artistic director of Allegro Vivo Festival and conductor of Academia Allegro Vivo. His international career has taken him to major concert halls in Europe, Japan and Asia, including Salzburg Festival, Musikverein Vienna, Konzerthaus Berlin, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Palais des Beaux-Arts Brussels, Concertgebouw Amsterdam with Radio-, CD- and TV recordings. He has performed with conductors like S. Ozawa, P. Boulez, M. Jansons, F. Welser-Möst. After being concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra he now holds the post of concertmaster of the Tonkuenstler Orchestra since 2004. Founder and artistic director of Capriccio Vienna. He received numerous awards including the cultural award of the state of Lower Austria in 2014. He studied with B. Kuschnir, R. Küchl, G. Schulz and I. Ozim at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and at Bern University of Arts. 2015 he obtained a PhD in Vienna on studies on Virtuosity.

Christian Ostertag

Since 2017 professor at the University of Music Karlsruhe. Since 2005 professor at the Trossingen University of Music. Since 1996 principal leader of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg. Performances under conductors such as M. Gielen, S. Cambreling, M. Viotti und H. Holliger. Invitations to play at concerts including Japan, North and South America, at the SchleswigHolstein Festival, the Berlin Festival, the Rheingau Festival and Wien Modern. In 2001 he was awarded the European Soloist Award by the Pro Europa foundation. Numerous radio- and CD recordings. Cooperation with contemporary composers, including P. Eötvös, H. Lachenmann, G. Kúrtág. Studied under W. Gradow and R. Kussmaul. In 1990, winner of the “Deutscher Musikwettbewerb” in Bonn and chosen for the 35th “Bundesauswahl-Konzerte Junger Künstler” new-talent programme.

Benjamin Schmid

Professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. Masterclasses at Bern University of the Arts. Soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra London, Petersburg Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam or Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under conductors such as Dohnányi, Zinman, Ozawa. Regular appearances at the Salzburg Festival. More than 50 CD recordings, has been honored with the German Record Prize, the Echo Classic Prize, Grammophone Editor’s Choice or the Strad Selection. Artistic Director of the ClassixKempten Music Festival in Germany and beginning with the 2020/21 season, he has been appointed Artistic Director of the chamber orchestra Musica Vitae in Växjö (Sweden). 2006 “International Prize for Art and Culture” of the City of Salzburg. 1992 winner of the Carl-Flesch Competition, the Mozart, the Beethoven and the Audience Prize in London. Worldwide TV appearances with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Anton Sorokov

Since 2011 Professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Additionally guest professor at the University of Milan-Bicocca since 2013. Performed on the world's most famous stages as first Concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Solo performances have led to projects with conductors such as W. Sawallisch, G. Prêtre, M. Rostropovich, M. Whun Chung, Y. Nézet-Séguin, P. Jordan, O. Meyer Wellber, K. Nagano, A. Orozco-Estrada, F. Welser-Möst and F. Luisi. Regularly performs with renowned orchestras such as Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. 1st prize and special prize at the Beethoven Competition in the Czech Republic, as well as 1st at the Stefanie Hohl Competition in Vienna and the Romano Romanini Competition in Brescia.

Réka Szilvay

Since 2006 professor of violin at the Sibelius Academy/ University of the Arts Helsinki. Performances as a soloist and chamber musician all over Europe, Asia, South America and USA. Concerts as soloist with all major Finnish orchestras as well as with the London Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Orchestra St. Petersburg, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg in the most prestigious concert halls, including Musikverein Wien, Festspielhaus Salzburg, Tokyo Suntory Hall, National Concert Hall Taipei, Symphony Hall Birmingham, London Barbican Concert Hall, Kölner Philharmonie and Teatro Colón Buenos Aires. As chamber musician performances at Konzerthaus Wien, Carnegie Hall New York, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall London and Cité de la Musique Paris. Concerts with the pianists H. Kärkkäinen, C. Ingolf Turban

Professor at the Munich University of Music, from 1995–2006 Professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart. Solo performances in the greatest concert halls including the Berlin and Munich Philharmonic, Kennedy Center Washington, Avery Fisher Hall New York, Tonhalle Zurich, Golden Hall of Musikverein Vienna and La Scala in Milan, working with S. Celibidache, Ch. Dutoit, L. Maazel, Z. Mehta, Y. Menuhin, J. Märkl and M. Viotti. His extensive repertoire in all branches has produced over 40 albums, including celebrated premiere performances. His virtuosic skill for Niccolò Paganinis works gained critical acclaim for his performance with the New York Philharmonic in 2006 and in the TV documentary “Paganinis Geheimnis”. In 2005 founder of the Chamber Orchestra “I Virtuosi di Paganini”. In 2021 he received the International Classical Music Awards.

Ulf Wallin

Since 2020 professor for violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Fritz Kreisler Institute. Juror at renowned competitions such as International Music Competition of the ARD Munich, Internationale Fritz Kreisler Competition Vienna. Soloist and chamber musician with concert tours in Asia, Europe and USA. Cooperation with conductors such as J. L. Cobos, M. Honeck, P. Järvi and F. Welser-Möst. Chamber music partner of B. Canino, H. Holliger, B. Hendricks and A. Schiff. Performances on a regular base at international festivals such as Luzern Festival, Berliner Festwochen, Musiktage Mondsee and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Close cooperation with well-known contemporary composers, such as A. Eliason, A. Schnittke and R. Shchedrin. More than 50 CD recordings. In 2014 appointed as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He plays a violin of Domenico Montagnana from 1746.

Roland Glassl

Since 2018 professor for viola at the Munich University of Music. From 2004–2018 professor for viola at the University for Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main. 1999–2015 violist of the Mandelring Quartet, numerous concerts with the Trio Charolca. Soloist with conductors such as Sir C. Davis, H. Bäumer, H. Griffiths et al. Concerts with Tonkuenstler Orchestra Niederoesterreich, China National Opera House Symphony Orchestra, German Philharmonic Orchestra etc. Performances at Wigmore Hall, National Centre for the Performing Arts Peking, Berlin Philharmony. Veit Hertenstein

Since 2016 professor for viola at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany. 2011–2017 principal violist of the Basel Symphony Orchestra. Concerts in the United States. Concerts at Marlboro Music Festival, Seiji Ozawa International Music Academy, Viola Space Festival Tokyo, Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and Verbier Festival, where he was awarded with the “Henri Louis de la Grange” viola prize. Playing with Trio Wanderer, Modigliani and Ysaye Quartets. Prizewinner of several prestigious competitions. In 2009 first violist to win the New Talent Competition of the European Broadcasting Union in Slovakia, with worldwide radio broadcasts. Prizewinner of the first Tokyo International Viola Competition 2009. Studied with N. Imai at Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva. Artistically influenced by G. Kurtag, K. Penderecki, G. Takács-Nagy, Y. Bashmet and K. Kashkashian.

Hariolf Schlichtig

Professor for viola and chamber music at the Munich University of Music. International Masterclasses. Many of his students are prizewinners of competitions and have international engagements. Soloist and principal violist of the “Cappella Andrea Barca” with worldwide concerts. Longstanding relationship and CD recordings with the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Soloist at the Cologne Philharmonie, Conservatoire at Bruxelles, Beethoven Festival in Bonn, and at Omaggio a Palladio in the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenca under Andras Schiff´s direction, in Zuerich and Carnegie Hall in New York. Chamber music performances with i.a. Alban Berg Quartett, in the ensemble Villa Musica as well as with L. Kavakos, A. Schiff, H. Holliger. Award winning CD recordings. Thomas Selditz

Since 2010 professor for viola at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, before that professorships at the University of Music in Hanover and Hamburg. At the age of 21, 1st solo-violist with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and a few years later with the Staatskapelle Berlin. Member of the Gaede Trio and member of the Hugo Wolf Quartet Vienna till 2016, guest performances in Europe, Japan and in the U.S. Recordings of his chamber music were released by the labels Largo Records, Tacet, Sony, MDG, Audite and Phoenix. In 2003, his solo CD was awarded with Diapason and the German Record Critics’ Award. Studies at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin under A. Lipka.

Peijun Xu

Since 2018 professor for viola at the Cologne University of Music and Dance, department Aaachen, before that at the University of Detmold and at the University for Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt/Main. Soloist with i. a. Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and BadenBaden Philharmonic under conductors such as M. Tang, Y. Bashmet, P. Baleff and R. Gothóni. World premieres of solo concerts for viola of Ralf Gothóni, Qigang Chen, Thorsten Encke und Maria Koval. Chamber music with P. Rivinius, E. Rubinova, J. P. Maintz and A. Sitkovetsky. Playing with Ensemble Modern. Debut CD with works of Bach, Schubert, Vieuxtemps, among others. Studied in China and with R. Natalie Clein

Professor at the Royal College of Music London and since 2018 at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock. Regular performances in major concert halls and with renowned orchestras worldwide. Performances within the Cello Unwrapped Series in London’s King’s Place, world premiere of Sir J. Travener’s “Flood of Beauty” at the Barbican Centre, performing Bloch’s “Schelomo“ with the Orkiestra Symfoniczna NFM and B. Shwartz in Wroclaw, at the Stavanger Chamber Music Festival as well as performance at the Sydney Opera House. Artistic director of her own chamber music festival in Purbeck, Dorset. Florian Eggner

Soloist and chamber musician. Since 2001 lecturer for violoncello and chamber music. His students frequently are winners of competitions. Masterclasses in Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain and Australia. Chamber music partners such as L. Tomter, Takács Quartet, Wiener Streichersolisten, G. Schulz, P. Riegelbauer and K. Kobantschenko. 1997 founder of the Eggner Trio and since that time concert tours worldwide. Player as soloist with orchestras like Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra of South Bohemia, INSO-Lviv, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Tonkuenstler Orchestra. Numerous CD recordings and award winner. Maria Grün

Since 2012 lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Since 2017 leadership of the preparatory class for cello. Teaches talented children at the Johann Sebastian Bach music school. Concerts as soloist with orchestras such as Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck, Vienna Chamber Philharmonic and European Union Chamber Orchestra. 2008–2014 principal cellist of RSO Vienna. Maximilian Hornung

Since 2014 Professor at the Munich University of Music. One of the leading cellists of his generation. Regular performances as a soloist with renowned orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Vienna Symphony, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under well-known and renowned conductors. Invitations to festivals in Schwetzingen, Salzburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau, Lucerne, Verbier, Ravinia and Hong Kong. Chamber music tours in trio with Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis. First Prize at ARD Music Competition in 2000 as cellist of the Tecchler Trio. Troels Svane

Barbara Gisler-Haase

Professor for flute at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Head of the Leonard Bernstein Institute for many years, since 2015 Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Art and Young Artists’ Promotion. In 1974 she won an award in the international competition at Prague Spring. In the same year she began to teach at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Member of the Eurasia Quartet, the Vienna Nonett and the Vienna Bach Soloists. In 1983 she founded the Vienna Flautists and in 1997 the Jubal Trio in the formation flute, cello and piano. Numerous concerts with these ensembles as well as more than 15 CD recordings. Author of the flute series “Magic Flute” and “Fit for the flute”. In 2009 development of the “wave line” flute for beginners in cooperation with flute maker W. Tomasi. This instrument received the “red dot award”.

Performing on stage can be the most exhilarating feeling for some of us and hands down one of the most stressful situations for others. If you are struggling with this, there are a lot of possibilities to turn your stage experience from something that is driven by fear into something more enjoyable and more authentic. How can you find a little more ease and fulfillment on stage? How can you stay focused and maintain a strong presence? In this workshop, you’ll receive plenty of input through working with the body, breath, and mind. We will explore concepts from psychology, yoga and music physiology.

Join me for this interactive workshop where you will gather valuable tools to make your stage experience your own. Veronika Morscher is a singer-songwriter, yoga teacher and psychologist who teaches performance coaching, concentration practice, bodywork and yoga at Music and Performing Arts Universities in Vienna and Frankfurt.

Virtuosity, musicality, playing technique are major qualities for musicians. Equally important is the authentic and confident performance as well as the conscious contact to the audience. Musicians are like high-performance athletes, they need a very precise perception and cognition of their body, to manage the various challenges of an artistic career at its best. A comprehensive body perception training will increase the perception ability and the body awareness – on stage as well as in daily practising routine. Requirements for successful performance and healthy musicians for a lifetime!

Workshop with Bijan Khadem-Missagh

Each year students of Allegro Vivo Summer Academy form a string orchestra, coached by the founder of the festival, Bijan Khadem-Missagh. The orchestra will work on a famous piece of music for strings. The concerts on 6th and 20th August, 21.00, will be performed open air at the public lake Horn. All string players are invited to join this orchestra project. The participation is included in the course fee. Join this project and be enriched by this great experience.

Workshop Chamber music

Chamber music forms the focus of Allegro Vivo Festival and its Summer Academy, for it is a genuine touchstone for technical finesse, highly developed skills of artistic and social interaction and the maturity of a musician’s comprehension of music. Besides encouragement of existing ensembles, new formations will be arranged before beginning of the festival. Chosen literature will be developed within the course. Chamber music classes are offered for pianists, string players, wind instrument players and mixed ensembles and will be coached by Bijan Khadem-Missagh, Florian Eggner and Christian Ostertag.

CLASSES

Classes are held by renowned artists and lecturers involving at least 3 hours per week per student. Participants have the choice between concert-, soloand chamber music literature. Also existing ensembles can be coached.

ACCOMPANIMENT

In addition to the classes, numerous accompanists will be available to help participants study and prepare for the music programme within the context of the course.

CHAMBER MUSIC CLASSES

Chamber music classes are offered for pianists, string players, wind instrument players and mixed ensembles.

Larsen string consultation

During your masterclass you will have the opportunity to get a string consultation by an expert of Larsen Strings. Nikolai Tunkowitsch and his colleagues will support you to find the right set up for you instrument, including a free set of strings (Violin, Viola or Cello). The dates will be announced to all participants before summer, limited lessons available. First come, first serve!

Lydia Altenburger

International violinist and violist, has lived and worked in Vienna since 2007. She dedicates herself to teaching children very successfully. Her students are regularly winners of “Prima la Musica”. As chamber musician playing at festivals e. g. the Swabian Spring, Prussia Cove, the Upper Austrian Collegiate Concerts, the Neuberger Kulturtage and the LOISIARTE. Chamber music performances with partners such as Patrick Demenga, Eszter Haffner, Reinhard Latzko, Michel Lethiec, Christoph Schiller, Marko Ylönen and the music band Franui. Regular collaboration with orchestras such as the RSO Vienna, the Vienna Volksopernorchester, the Wiener Kammerorchester or the Camerata Nordica in Sweden. Lydia Altenburger was born in London. She studied violin under H. Davies and piano under D. de Saram at the Royal Academy of Music. 2006 graduation with unanimous distinction.

Professor at the music school in Klosterneuburg and Vienna. In 2004 she founded and directed the Youth Symphony Orchestra Klosterneuburg. Teacher at the International Music Weeks Lassing, Styria. Studied solo violin and pedagogic at the Music University Belgrade (1987). Until 1999 professor at the State Music School in Zemun, director of the string section at the music school Kosta Manojlovic as well as teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade. CLASSES FOR THE YOUTH, CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS

The courses are dedicated to children up to the age of 16, accompanied by an adult.

CLASSES

The classes aimed to encourage children’s passion in music and foster their joy in making music. Daily rehearsals, practice and companionship have a positive impact on their ability to strengthen their qualities and musical development. The period of two weeks make sustainable pedagogical effects possible. Lecturers share their expertise, but also their great love for music. Lessons, accompaniment and chamber music training will provide participants with new experiences. Parents escort their children and are part of the courses to encourage and support their children best possible at the courses as well as during the year.

ACCOMPANIMENT

In addition to the classes, numerous accompanists will be available to help participants study and prepare for the music programme within the context of the course. The number of lessons goes by the children’s abilities and according to the professors.

Performing in the orchestra is an integral part of the first course week for strings and flute. Concert on 18th August, 4 p.m., Kunsthaus Horn.
