We’resogratefulthatyou’reopentolearningmoreabout whoweare,andhopefortheopportunitytolearnmore aboutyou,too.

Musicisatremendouspartofofourlives.Webothgrewupsurroundedbymusic,butithastrulybecomeacoreelementtoour worldinawaywenevercouldhavedreamedof.Scott'scareerasaGrammy-awardwinningsongwriterhasprovidedsomuchjoy, friendshipandtakenustoplaceswe'dneverimagined.Whetherit'sgoingtoseeourbestfriendsplayconcertsatthebiggest venuesintheworld,dancingtoScott'ssongsontheradio,havingasingalongwithfriendsandfamilyinthelivingroom,oreven teachingourfriendsbabieshowtoplayinstruments,musiciswithusdaily.

Wearesogratefulfortherolemusichashadinourlivesandsoexcitedtosharethisveryspecialworldwithachild. Ifgiventheopportunity,wewillfillyourchild'slifewithloveandmusic.

How we met::

Wemetwhenwewere15yearsoldatasummercamp.Wequicklybecamebestfriendsandalongwithahandfulofour otherclosefriends-Danny,Josh,JessicaandJillian-allstartedspendingalotoftimetogether.Assoonascampendedand wepartedways,westartedthetraditionofnightlyphonecalls.WhenI,Rachel,firstgotmydriver’slicenseat17,Iwas mostexcitedtobeabletogoseeScott,wholived20minutesaway.Afterafewyearsofbeingsoclose,werealizedour feelingsranabitdeeperthan“justfriends”andwestarteddating.

Scotthadaband(hewastheleadsinger,guitaristandwroteallthemusic)atthetimesoalotofweekendswerededicated togoingtoseehisbandplay-sometimeslocally,andsometimesinManhattan-whichisamemorythatalwaysmakes mesmile.Hewrotealotofhisfirstsongsaboutourrelationshipwhichmostlyconsistedofstoriesaboutblurredfriendship lines,younglove,andwhatitfeltliketofallinloveforthefirsttime.

Fromthere,webothwenttocollegeanditfeltprettyfarapartScottinupstateNewYork,andmeinBaltimore-whichpushed usindifferentdirectionsforafewyears.Westillspoke regularly,butsaweachotherless.Thetimeapartwastheright thingtodo,butwebothalwayshadthatfeeling…thatspecial feelingwhenyouknowsomethinginyourgutbutaren’treally understandingwhatit’ssayingyet.Forme,Ithinkthatfeeling wastellingmethatourlovewasreal,itjustwasn’tourtimeyet.

ScottkissingRachel.

Aftercollege,Scottwentonanationaltourwithhisbandand myloveofchildrenandtravelbroughtmetoThailandfor6 months.IlivedonthebeachinanislandcalledKohSamuiand taughtEnglishtoelementaryschoolkids.Ididn’tspeakThai, andtheydidn’tspeakEnglish-butwefoundawayto communicate,andplayandlearntogether.

Wegotbacktogetherwhenwewere24.Whenwewere27,we movedintogetherandgotmarried-whichwasoneofthemost funnightsofbothofourlives.Wecalledourwedding“a celebrationoflove”andwhilethenightwasaboutthetwoofus, itwasalsojustasmuchaboutthecommunitywehadaround us.

Tenyearslater,wesometimeslookateachotherandsayout loud,“Ican’tbelievewe’velovedeachothersincewewereso young”.It’ssocrazytothinkthatwe’vesharedsomanyphases ofourlives.Andit’ssoamazingtohavebeentherealongside eachotheraswe’vegrownandchangedbothindividuallyand together.

Iwasbornintoafamilywithtwolovingparents.Myparents(NancyandDorian)alreadyhad2children(mybrotherand sister,MandaandJordan)towhomIamveryclose.IwasmusicalfromthedayIwasbornandmusichasbeenabigthreadin mylife.IwasplayingpianoandguitarandsingingsincebeforeIcanremember.Instrumentswereallovermyhouse.Wehad apiano,guitarsandabass.Myfirstlovewasthepiano.MyfatherDorianwouldteachmechordsandmelodiesandIcouldn’t waittomasterthem.EverythingelseinmyhouseJordanandmyselfturnedintoadrumset.Countertops,potspans-you nameit,mydadplayedJazzandwouldtellmeandJordantherewerenowrongnotesinJazzsoplaywhateverfeelsgood.It wasalwaysafreeandcreativewaytoplaythatIstillusetodaywhenI’mworkingonmusic.Nancy,mymotherwasan Englishteacherandwasalwaysrelatingeverythinginmylifetoastorywithmorals.IrememberifIgotintotheleastbitof troubleshewouldmakemewriteanessayeitherapologizingordefendingmyself.

Iwasinvolvedinlotsofsportsgrowingupandplayedonlotsofbasketballandbaseballteamsinmycommunity.My fatherDoriancoachedsomeoftheteamsIplayedon.Ilookforwardtobeingabletocoachsportsforachildofours.Imade agroupoffriendsinmyearlyyearsthatarestillmybestfriendstoday.Weplayedsportstogether,formedrockbands togetherandmostlymadeeachotherlaughalot-westilldo.Inthesummerswewenttocamptogether.Campwasabig partofourlives.Wewouldwaitallyeartogotocampsowecouldhangoutwitheachotherallday.WhatIwasn’t expectingwastomeetRachelatcamp.AsRachelmentioned,wefirstbecamefriendsat15yearsold.It’shardtobelievewe metsoyoung.Weimmediatelyclicked.Friendsforyearsbeforedatingwedevelopedarelationshipthatonlykeptgetting stronger.Wewouldtalkaboutspendingourlivestogetherwhenwedidn’thaveanyideawhatthatevenmeant.

WhenIthinkaboutmychildhood,thefirstthingthatcomestomindismygrandmatellingusover,andoveragain “familyiseverything".Asakid,Ididn’treallyunderstandwhyshefeltsostronglyaboutthatbutasanadult,Ifind myselflivingbythatvalueinalmosteverydecisionImake.Iwasborntotwolovingparents,JaniceandEric,andthe firstgrandchildtoallfourofmygrandparents,andabunchofAuntsandUncleswhowelcomedmebywritingmy nameinthesnowontheblizzard-likedayIwasborn.Justtwoyearslater,mysister,Ilana,(andbestfriend)wasborn andourfamilywascomplete.

Someofmyfavoritememoriesfrommychildhoodhappentobe thingsthatstillmakemeveryhappy—spendingtimeatthe beachplayingintheocean,gatheringaroundthepianowhile mydadplayswhateverhisfavoritesong-of-themomentisover andoveruntilhegetsitjustright,cookingandbaking(somuch cookingandbaking!),takinglongroadtripstogoskiing, travelingandmakingnewfriendswhereverwewent,and holidaycelebrationssofilledwithfamilywecouldbarelyallfit inthehouse.WhetheraholidaycelebrationorFridaynight dinner,therewasneveranemptyseatatthetable—becauseif therewas,mymomandgrandmawouldquicklyopentheirarms andfillitwithsomeonefromthecommunitysotheydidn’t havetoeatalone.

Inkindergarten,Imetmytwobestgirlfriends-Jillianand Jessica(whowasadoptedasaninfantfromColombia,so adoptionhasalwaysbeenaveryimportantpartofmylife)whoarestillmybestfriendstothisdate.I’mthegodmotherto Jessica(andherhusbandPete’s)son,Ollie,andJillianandher husbandGabelivejusttwoblocksawayfromusnow!LikeScott andhisfriends,somethingwelookedforwardtoallwinterlong wassummercampwherewecouldspendalldayatthelake, doingarts&craftsanddoingourbesttoplaysports(which unlikeScott,Iwashonestlyneververygoodat).Mostofall,we lookedforwardtoreunitingwithourotherbestfriends.Forme, oneofthosebestfriendsjusthappenedtobeScott.

Familyisandalwayshadbeenthemostimportantpartofourlives.Weliveveryclosetoourparentsandseethem frequently.Sincewehavebeentogethersolongourparentshavedevelopedawonderfulrelationshipwitheachotheras well-andwillevenhangouttogetherwhenwe’renotthere!TheyactuallymetwhenweallusedtogoseeScott’sband planwhenwewereinhighschool,sothey’veknowneachotheralmostaslongaswehave!Wespendlotsofweekends togetherandoftenbringourfamiliestogetherforholidays-includingaunts,uncles,cousinsandgrandparents.

Adoptionhasalwaysbeenaveryimportantpartofourlives. ScottsbrotherJordanandhiswifeDianeadoptedtheir7yearold sonjustlastyearaftertheycaredforhimastheirfostersonfor6 years.Hejoinedourfamilyasafosterchildwhenhewasjusta fewmonthsold,sowe’veallknownhimandlovedhimsincehe wasababyindiapers.Jordan,DianeandJoshualivejust5 minutesawayandweseethemmultipletimesaweekforcoffee dates,movienightsorevenjustlittlewalksaroundthe neighborhood.Joshualovescomingoverandhe’sevenclaimeda roominourhouseasJoshua’sroom.Heracestoitwhenhe walksinthedoor.

It’sbeensomuchfunbuildingnewtraditionswithJoshua-like goingforweeklypizzadinners,cheeringhimonathisbaseball gamesintheparkonSaturdaymornings,takinghimtothepier togofishingandofcourse,buildingmanynewholiday traditionswithhim.Halloweenissuchafunone—everyyear, wetakeJoshuatrickortreatingandthenheadovertothe communitygardenwherepeoplefromtheneighborhoodsetup ahauntedgardenforallthekids.Thenightusuallyendswith watchingamovietogetherandplayinggamesuntilbedtime.

Joshuaiseagerforustohavealittleonetojoinhimonthese adventures.Hehastoldushewillsharehisoldcostumeswith hisnewcousin.

WelovetosharetheexcitementoftheholidayseasonwithJoshuaandcreatingourownspecialChristmastraditions togetherisdefinitelyahighlight.ThefirstweekendinDecembereveryyear,weallmeetupattheparkjustdownthe blockfromourhousewherethereisaseasonalChristmasTreefarmsetup.Togetherwepickourtrees(really,Joshua picksthetrees!)andstockuponseasonalgoodieslikefreshmaplesyrupandChristmasdecor.Wethenalldragthe treebacktoourhouse,putChristmasmusiconandhaveadecoratingpartywhichalwaysincludeslotsofhot chocolateandusually,andalotofdancingtowhateverJoshua’sfavoritesongofthemomentis—usuallyMichael Jacksons’Thriller.Joshuaissoexcitedtothinkthathecouldhaveababycousintojoinhim.

WearealsoveryclosewithScott’soldersisterManda,ourbrother-in-lawMikeandnieceandnephewDylanandLauren.Wehave babysatLaurenandDylansincethetimetheywerelittleandareinshockeverytimewesaywecan’tbelieveDylanisincollege already.ScotthasalsobeenabiginfluenceonLauren’slife.Shehastakenabiginterestincreatingmusicandhehasbeenableto createaspecialbondwithherteachingherhowtowrite.It’sprettywildtothinkRachelhasknownthemtheirentirelivestoo.

Rachel’ssister,Ilana,justgotmarriedandwe’resoexcitedtowelcomeJoeltoourfamily.We’realsoverythrilledofthepossibility ofhavingchildrencloseinagesotheycangrowuptogether,likewedidwithourcousins.Wheneverwe’rewithIlanaandJoel,we findourselvesonspontaneousmini-adventurestogether-likegoingforhikes,rentingkayaksandspendingtheafternoononthe water,orventuringouttofindthebesticecreamshoparound.Wecan’twaittocontinuethoseadventurestogetherasour

Ourfriendsareaverybigpartofwhatmakesus“us”.Wefeelveryluckytohavesuchalargenetworkoffriendsthatwe’ve createdbothseparatelyandtogether.Bothofusarestillextremelyclosetofriendswegrewupwithandalsohaveatight knitgroupoffriendswe’vemadeovertheyearsfromcollege,work,andtraveling.Manyofthemareclosebyandwetake anyopportunitywecantomaketimetobetogether.It’sbeensofunwatchingalloffriendsstartfamiliesoftheirown.

Our life together now:

We’velivedinBrooklynforover10years-sinceaboutthe timewegotmarried.Afewyearsagoweboughtourhome thatwecurrentlyliveinwhichisonatree-linedstreetright downtheblockfromtheparkandplayground.

Inthespringandsummer,theneighborhoodissuperlively andwelovetohavefriendsandfamilyovertoenjoythe energyhere.We’lloftenwalkdowntheblockandhangout attheparkandthenhaveeveryonetoourbackyardfora BBQdinner.

Ourneighborhoodisfilledwithshopsandartgalleriesbut hasaveryintimateneighborhoodfeel.Oneofourfavorite partsaboutwhereweliveisthatsomanydifferenttypesof peoplefromalloverhavefoundahomehereandeverybody iscelebratedforexactlywhotheyare.

Whenwe’renothomeinBrooklyn,wetendtospendalotoftimeupstateNYinthemountains.Thistraditionstartedwhen wewouldgospendtheweekendcampingwithfriendsforJuly4theveryyearandhasgrowntousnowhavingacabin upstatethatwelovetospendtimeat.Ourannualcampingtripisstillsomethingwedo(butnowwedoitwithJordan, DianeandJoshua)andwealsospendmanyweekendsatourhouseupstatehostinggroupsoffamilyandfriends.

Overthesummer,wespendalotoftimehavingpicnics,campfiresandfloatingaroundthelakeandinthewinter,wecozy upandlistentooldrecords,dofunarts&craftsprojectsandcookwithfriends,andourfriendssmallkids(whoareall between0-5yearsold).Everyfamilymemberiseagerforustoaddachildtothefamilygroup-andsoarewe!

We’vebothalwayscherishedholidaytraditionsandqualitytimewithfamilyandoneofourfavoritedaysoftheyearis celebratingThanksgiving.ThanksgivingDayforusstartsthesameeveryyear—bywatchingtheThanksgivingDayparade, whichissospecialasitsignifiesholidayseasoninNYC-amagicaltimeofyearfilledwithholidaylights,weekendsice skatingandfestivedinnerswithfriends.Assoonastheparadeisover,wehopinthecarandalldrivetoRachel’sAunt’shouse inConnecticutwherewearegreetedbyawarmhousefullofcousinsandacupofhotapplecider.Wespendthedayeatinga verytraditionalThanksgivingfeast(turkey,stuffing,freshlybakedbreads,sweetpotatopie,etc.),watchingfootballand sharingstories.Thekidstablewhereweoncesatisnowfilledwithourniecesandnephewsandourcousinskids.Justlikewe usedtodo,afterwealleat,thekidsallrundowntothebasementwhereRachel’sauntsetsupawonderlandforthemfilled withpingpong,toys,stuffedanimalsandgames.

Aftercollege,Istartedworkinginadvertisingandpublicrelationsandstayedinthatindustryforover10years.Somewhere downtheline,IrealizedIwantedtoconnectwithandsupportpeopleonadeeperlevelandwhileworking,startedtaking classestobecomeaholisticnutritionist.Ayearlater,Istartedacompanydevelopingprogramsaroundhealth&wellness, educatingothersonmind-bodyconnectionandhowwecanbettercareforourselves.

IlovethatIhavetheopportunitytosharethisknowledgewithothersinawaythatcanempowerothersintheirownlivesand makemeaningfulconnectionsthroughmywork,everyday.
