We would like to welcome you to our beautiful town and hope you will enjoy your time here. We think you will agree that Chatham is a very special and memorable place to visit
You will find the natural beauty of Chatham remarkable . Visitors are drawn to the expansive and magnificent beaches, the lighthouse, wildlife, nature trails, bike path, and stunning views of the ocean. Chatham has a special blend of the past and present with quaint streets lined with historic sea captains’ homes, a fine selection of historic museums, and a walking downtown area with unique shops, galleries, and restaurants.
Lodging options range from a spectacular oceanfront resort to lovely bed and
breakfast inns tucked in throughout this picturesque seaside village.
Chatham is located on the elbow of Cape Cod surrounded on three sides by water. Located halfway between Falmouth and Provincetown, it extends out to sea as the most easterly point in Massachusetts. Once a quiet farming and fishing community, Chatham has become a vibrant tourist destination. Rich in its maritime heritage, as well as a spirited New England town with a variety of small businesses, Chatham is a special place for year-round residents and visitors alike
We hope you will find our town as special as we do, and that you will return many times in the future to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful seaside village and all that it has to offer
Incorporated in 1942, as a successor to the Chatham Board of Trade, the Chatham Chamber of Commerce, with its nearly 400 members, is dedicated to blending the interests of the business community with those of town government as well as Chatham’s residents and many seasonal visitors. We are especially proud of Chatham, with its wonderful heritage and its natural beauty, and our members, each of whom continually strives to keep and preserve what we are blessed to have here .
A Visitor Information Center is located in the town-owned David T. Bassett House, 2377 Main Street, at the intersection of Routes 28 and 137 in South Chatham. The Seasonal Information Booth is located at 533 Main Street, next to Town Hall. Both locations are under the supervision of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce and maintained by the Town of Chatham

One of Cape Cod’s oldest townships, Chatham was settled in 1656 by William and Anne Busby Nickerson. Incorporated in 1712, Chatham now has approximately 6,200 residents, according to the town census list.
Originally a farming community, Chatham’s inhabitants found deep sea fishing to be a more lucrative occupation. Today, small boat deep sea fishing and shellfishing continue as important maritime industries.
Chatham covers an area of approximately 17 square miles and is a happy combination of past and present . You will find Chatham to be an old-fashioned and picturesque New England seaside village, yet offering the best in modern facilities. Surrounded by water on three sides, Chatham benefits from Mother Nature’s “natural air conditioning” with cool summers, exquisite autumns, and mild winters It is a comfortable place in which to live year-round or visit on vacation.
Chatham operates under the town meeting form of government. The executive officers are a board of five part-time Selectmen and a Town Manager . The citizens of Chatham enjoy the special benefits of forward-looking zoning and planning, and both public and private conservation efforts

SUMMER: Chatham lies at the “elbow” of the Cape at latitude 41.40 North and longitude 69.58 West. We are fortunate in having navigable waters on three sides, and, as a result, the average summer temperature is close to 70 degrees. We do have fogs but they’re rarely cold in summer. They are a boon to our gardens and usually yield to the sun by noon. Chatham fogs are just one more “conversation piece.”
AUTUMN & INDIAN SUMMER: This is one of our finest seasons, growing more popular each year. The water is never bluer than in October, the air is bracing and dry, the scenery at its best with the sharpest colors of the year . Swimming in September or early October is not too cold for hardy folk Indian Summer lingers through September, October, and well into November a succession of glorious days and cool evenings.
It’s an uncrowded time for tennis and golf, bicycling and hiking, beach exploring, sailing and fishing. It’s all part of Chatham’s Indian Summer. Come savor it with us!
WINTER: Our average winter temperature is about ten degrees warmer than on the mainland We do get an occasional fall of snow which doesn’t last .
SPRING: March to May is our spring, when we expect the thermometer to read in the upper thirties to low fifties most of the time. But when June comes, it “Busts Out All Over.” The waters of Pleasant Bay sparkle, and soon our famous roses and early flowers are in bloom everywhere

Lighthouse Beach is a pristine walking beach and does not have lifeguards. Lighthouse Beach is swim at your own risk. The beach is monitored by Beach patrols who are there to assess the beach conditions, educate the public and prevent and respond to emergencies. The patrols are not there to guard you or your family in the water. The Lighthouse Beach patrols run from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm daily, starting in late June through Labor Day weekend .
A flagpole at the top of the stairs leading to the beach and a second flagpole on the beach below the parking lot warns the public of dangerous conditions.
The red flag shown here indicates that all swimming is prohibited in that area
Know
The only way to avoid a shark attack is to remain on shore. If you choose to enter the water:
• Be aware that sharks hunt for seals in shallow water
• Stay close to shore
• Swim, paddle, kayak and surf in groupsdon’t isolate yourself
• Avoid areas where seals are present
• Avoid areas where schools of fish are visible
• Avoid murky or low visibility water
• Limit splashing
• Adhere to all signage and flag warnings at beaches
• Follow instructions of the lifeguards and beach patrol
If you spot a shark along the beach
• Exit the water calmly with limited splashing
• Notify others in the water around you
• Notify a lifeguard, beach patrol or parking lot attendant
• Shark sightings can be submitted to Sharktivity App (highlighted)
Most white shark bite victims survive because of first aid initiated from bystanders. White Shark bites result in hemorrhaging which requires immediate first aid. Stop the Bleed. For first aid training opportunities and more information visit atlanticwhiteshark.org/ white-shark-public-safety

PLEASE BE AWARE OF YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS.
HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE SUMMER!
North Beach Island does not have lifeguards or beach patrol. The beach is swim at your own risk. Please be aware of rip tides, surf conditions and dangerous currents.
The new inlet that divides North (Nauset) Beach and North River Beach Island is closed to swimming. The currents are severe and treacherous. No flotation devices are allowed. There is absolutely no swimming in the cut by mandatory order of the Chatham Board of Health, the Harbormaster and the Park & Recreation Commission Please pay attention to all signage
The surf conditions and currents in the inlets are extremely dangerous. Anyone without local knowledge and experience should avoid using the inlets at all times. Small craft, sailing vessels, kayaks and boards of any kind should not use the inlets. They can be easily swept out to the ocean and into dangerous surf.
The currents are also very strong in Chatham Harbor Ocean waves break in the harbor Please pay attention to the tides and the shifting shoals. Schedule boating activities according to the tides . All vessels should heed the “Rough Bar’ warning (quick flashing yellow light) at the Chatham Lighthouse Coast Guard Station. Careful operation and navigation is required by all mariners and swimmers.
Harbor and gray seals are the most common species in Chatham, and can often be seen resting or hauled-out on rock piles, ledges, sand bars, and jetties exposed during low tide around the Chatham shoals from the North Beach breakthrough to South Beach and Monomoy. They’re also found resting on isolated beaches, in marshes, and on floating docks at all tide stages.
The best time to see seals is within 2 hours of low tide on a sunny midday afternoon. Because seals cannot move well on land,
during high tide they position themselves over submerged jetties. When the tide goes out they are left exposed, sitting on the jetty basking in the sun. If left undisturbed, they will stay on the rocks until the tide comes in again. If conditions are right, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 seals can be seen in the afternoons at Monomoy Island
There are several local companies offering exciting seal tours along the beautiful Chatham Harbor waterways between North Beach, Chatham Light, and the Break.
2023 ANGLERS SEASON REVIEW & 2024 ANGLERS SEASON PREVIEW
While the Anglers missed the playoffs in 2023 they finished the season strong, winning 5 of their last 6 games, including a 4 game win streak to conclude the season. During their final late season surge the Anglers offense came alive, averaging 9+ runs per game. Unfortunately, the Anglers strong season finish couldn’t offset their slow early season performance, which was adversely impacted by a mind-boggling 10 rescheduled games due to fog and rain. The 2023 Anglers were led on offense by Auburn’s Deric Fabian (5 HR’s, .352 average), Texas A&M’s Kaeden Kent (.329 average) and Austin Peay’s Lyle Miller-Green (3 HR’s, .312 average). The Anglers pitching staff was led by Aiden Jimenez (Oregon State) who in 8 outings covering 15 innings
compiled a stingy 1.14 ERA. Max Yehl (West Virginia) was the Anglers next most effective hurler, making 9 appearances, including 2 starts, logging 25 innings with a very respectable 3.24 ERA.
While it’s enjoyable to talk about the successes of 2023, we’re excited to turn our attention to the upcoming 2024 season where we are looking forward to Jeremy ‘Sheets’ Sheetinger taking over the reins as our Anglers Manager. Sheets has brought in former Hyannis Manager Eric Beatty as his pitching coach, and Eric’s previous Cape League experience should be very helpful to Sheets in his inaugural Cape League season. While we expect to see a few Returning faces for at least part of the season (e.g. Sam Antonacci, Liam Paddock, Aiden Jimenez) Sheets focused his recruiting strategy on bringing in new players from
across the country. This strategy appears to be paying off as we’re excited to see many of our incoming players doing very well in their college seasons . Offensively Chatham should be bolstered by 5 players hitting over .300 late in their college seasons; the aforementioned Sam Antonacci (Coastal Carolina), John Bay (Austin Peay), Jaden Davis (Vanderbilt), Ike Irish (Auburn), and Justin Lebron (Alabama). On the mound the Anglers are bringing several top prospect pitchers to Chatham including Jamie Arnold (Florida State) and Phil Fox (Pittsburgh), both with ERA’s under 1.00, along with Anthony Gubitosi (Delaware), and Nathan Knowles (William & Mary), both with ERA’s under 3.00. There you have it, the coaches are ready, the players have been carefully selected, and now it’s time to watch the 2024 season unfold. We are confident the season will contain plenty of excitement, a great deal of joy, and probably a few tears too. A typical Cape Cod Baseball League summer!

Several years ago, a community committee was formed to recognize the Chatham fishing industry in our town. It was decided to plan and erect a monument to this unique industry at the Chatham Fish Pier.
From an international competition with about 100 entrants, the committee narrowed the selection to a final three, which were submitted to our fishing community for a final selection The winning choice was designed by Sig Purwin — an artist and sculptor from Woods Hole —and dedicated in June 1992. The monument, entitled “The Provider,” features a strong hand pulling a fishing net from the sea with many fish and shellfish indigenous to Chatham caught in the net. Visit the monument at the Chatham Fish Pier. It shows our pride in the people of our fishing industry the proud, independent providers to the world of the Atlantic’s best seafood!
The Josiah Mayo House located at 540 Main Street is an excellent example of life on Main Street in the 1800s. It was built between 1818 and 1820 by Josiah Mayo, a Blacksmith by trade, who was Postmaster in Chatham for 40 years, Treasurer for 27 years and Selectman for two years. The house was occupied by members of the family until 1938. In 1974 it was purchased by Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, and two years later it became the property of the Chatham Conservation Foundation. The CCF has restored the house. For more information, contact 508-945-4084. chathamconservationfoundation.org
Owned and operated by the Chatham Historical Society, the Atwood Museum is located at 347 Stage Harbor Road . The original part of the museum is a house built in the 1750s by sea captain Joseph Atwood when he was a subject of George II of England. The house was occupied by the Atwood family until 1923, before the Historical Society acquired it in 1925. As such, it has remained almost entirely unchanged since the time it was built. The house provides an excellent view into the way of life during the 18th and 19th centuries in New England. Over time, several wings have been added to the original structure, with the latest expansion constructed between 2003 and 2005. Today there are twelve spacious galleries featuring art, artifacts, maps, charts, and decorative arts portraying life on Cape Cod since the 17th century.
The museum is displaying three new exhibits in 2024: A Place to Hang Your Hat, Children’s Activity Room, and Music to Your Ears.
A Place to Hang Your Hat will be located in the Portrait Gallery . This exhibit highlights a beautiful collection of historic hats from our Costumes & Textiles department. Enjoy
a variety of women and men’s hats from the early nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. This fun fashion exhibit will lead ladies and gentlemen down memory lane through a recreated Millinery and Haberdashery displaying, hairpins, Mob Caps, Sun Bonnets, Bowlers, Top Hats, and much more.
The Atwood Museum is proud to introduce our new Children’s Activity Room. Not your typical exhibit, but a new space to help usher in the next generation and their interest in history . This room will be a place for young children to expand their minds with fun activities. The Children’s Activity Room is chock-full of activities including coloring, blocks, books, and a giant chalkboard to let their creativity flourish. In addition, the room will display a couple of mini exhibits, one on vintage toys and another miniature diorama. We are looking forward to opening this fun, safe place for children and grandchildren, and we invite you to take advantage while visiting the museum.
Music to our ears: This year we are thrilled to add a new mini exhibit within the Old Atwood House. What better way to highlight the “Music Room” of the Old House than displaying the history of music? The Costumes & Textiles Department takes us on
a musical journey that will sure to please many visitors. Experience the Atwood Museum’s collection of musical instruments and vintage sheet music, while learning about the local artists who made Cape Cod and Chatham come alive during the Jazz age and beyond.
The Multimedia Room is open for its second year. Visitors can enjoy educational films about Chatham history, including the documentary about local artist Alice Stallknecht produced by the Chatham Historical Society. Stay tuned as we plan to offer additional films during the summer.
Always a crowd favorite is our The Rescue of the Pendleton exhibit. This exhibit, back for its seventh year, highlights the crew of the famed CG 36500 in their daring rescue on February 18, 1952. Another gallery pays homage to the Atwood Store, highlighted by the original Atwood Sleigh. It is devoted to antique tools and trades in Chatham, including cranberry growing, salt works and more.
One highlight of the museum is the Mural Barn that houses the nationally renowned portraits of 130 townspeople painted by Alice Stallknecht between 1932 – 1945 and capturing the life and struggles of local residents during that period.
On the grounds is the preserved Nickerson North Beach Camp. Built in 1947, the structure was moved, with all of the contents intact, to save it from being washed into the sea as the beach eroded. Also, be sure to check out the working lighthouse lantern of one of Chatham’s famed twin lights, together with its original Fresnel lens.
Hundreds of interesting antiques are displayed throughout the museum, providing something for all art lovers, history buffs, students and friends of Chatham and Cape Cod, regardless of age. Don’t forget to visit our gift shop, which is stocked with items and books relating to the museums’ collections.
As stewards of the region’s history and culture, the Chatham Historical Society strives to educate, inform and enlighten the public and bring enthusiasm to the Cape Cod community. The Atwood Museum exhibits are open from May to October with special festive happenings during the holidays. The research library and special programs including a monthly lecture series are available year round. For schedules and information, visit the museum website at chathamhistoricalsociety.org or call 508-945-2493

It is located in the old Chatham Railroad Company station on Depot Road, and has parking space at the door As listed in the National Register of Historical Places, this building is more than 100 years old and on its original site . The Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum of the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center is located at 847 Orleans Road (Route 28) across from Ryder’s Cove in North Chatham.
In 1914, radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi’s company built a wireless receiving station here paired with a transmitting station in Marion, Massachusetts intended to provide commercial point-to-point radio service between the United States and Norway. Following World War One and with the intervention of the US government, Marconi’s American assets were acquired by the newly formed Radio Corporation of America By 1921, RCA’s Chatham station was in full operation, but now for maritime ship-to-shore service with call sign WCC. It would soon become the largest US coastal station The campus of 10 original buildings on 11.3 acres has been preserved by the Town of Chatham as the Marconi-RCA National Register Historic District.
Through informative panels and interactive displays, visitors to the museum explore radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi’s life and legacy,
the role of maritime radio in world events, ship-to-shore communication with the actual shipboard radio from the hospital ship SS Hope, and artifacts from Chatham Radio / WCC’s history. The featured “Golden Age of Trans-Atlantic Ocean Liners” exhibit tells the unique stories of six famous 20th century passenger ships in photographs, graphics and video clips . The visitor gets a sense of what it was like to have been aboard, famous people they might have met, and historical events they might have witnessed These ships carried high society, royalty, dignitaries, stars of radio and film, humble immigrants seeking a better life in America, travelers, tourists and victorious armies. Chatham Radio / WCC linked them all to their loved ones and businesses. Visitors experience firsthand how a radio operator touching a Morse code key in Chatham could communicate with counterparts aboard ships sailing the seven seas, and learn about the talented and skilled people who conceived, built and operated the station.
From 1942 through 1945, Chatham Radio played a special role in defeating Germany during the World War II Battle of the Atlantic by intercepting Enigma-encrypted wireless messages between the Third Reich’s
headquarters and its ships at sea. “Station C”, as it was known then, forwarded these intercepts to Washington, D.C. for decoding. Station C also alerted the Navy’s radio direction-finding network to locate and track enemy vessels. The Navy Years exhibit features working electronic Enigma cipher machine simulators, allowing visitors to try their hand at message encryption
The Antenna Field Trail is the museum’s outdoor gallery, truly “open space” and open year-round. This is a winding path through the flora and fauna of Cape Cod with interpretive signs describing the station’s antennas and history . Some of the antennas are scaled replicas of the originals, actively used today by amateur radio operators to communicate around the world.
The museum and its Museum Shop are open most days from mid-June until mid-October and on weekends during the Spring and Fall. Interpretive lectures and presentations provide context for the museum’s exhibits, and the Center offers engaging science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) classes for youth. For information on museum hours, programs and events as well as Summer STEM classes for kids, please visit chathammarconi.org or call 508-945-8889 .

Visitors are invited to walk the labyrinth or sit for a while in meditation or contemplation

Recognized as home to one of Cape Cod’s most prolific fishing fleets, Chatham is well known for its fresh fish and seafood. While many restaurants feature the “catch of the day” and other local favorites, there is no lack of other fare, including Italian, French, Continental, Asian and, of course, good old traditional American .
Dining in most establishments is casual; and while shoes and shirts are always required, the need for a jacket and tie is rare. Most
restaurants do not accept reservations in season, but they generally do honor major credit cards .
On page 74, you will find a list of dining establishments in the Chatham area The information presented is designed to serve as a guide only; and while we have made every attempt to verify the facts, you should always check with the individual establishments regarding reservations and other details .

Chase Park, the Grist Mill and the Chatham Labyrinth
The delightful physical characteristics of Chatham, such as the beaches, marsh and wetlands, and meadows, have long been known to our residents and summer visitors.
Preservation of these resources is a benefit to our economy, our fisheries, wildlife and flora, a fact now recognized to a greater extent in the past few years by federal, state and local authorities. Chatham is fortunate in having, in addition to the town Conservation Commission, a privately operated organization in the Chatham Conservation Foundation, Inc., (104 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA 02633), dedicated to the preservation of these valued areas. The Foundation, chartered in 1962, is in the hands of eighteen trustees, including officers and executive committee, all without salary. Call 508-945-4084 for information, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am – 1 pm.
Many gifts of wetlands and marshlands have been donated to this organization and others obtained by purchase. To date, more than 588 acres have been put into conservation by the Foundation so they may be enjoyed by our residents and visitors .
A highlight of the Foundation’s work in the field of education is its publication A Beachcomber’s Botany, with illustrations by Marcia Gaylord Norman and text by Loren C. Petry. It is a valuable guide to the interesting plant life in the marshes, along the shore, and the upland. You will find a copy of the publication in the public libraries throughout Cape Cod
Chatham is a mecca for bird enthusiasts. In autumn, Cape Cod is a veritable habitat for birds of numerous species. Its temperate climate attracts many birds through the winter when most have winged south.
The summer months see the migration at its height Chatham and Monomoy Island afford unexcelled opportunity to observe many species, both rare and common. Nearly every species recorded from New England has been seen at some time in this area The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge is a link in the chain of migratory waterfowl refuges along the Atlantic Flyway. Access is available by car, by a short boat trip from Chatham Local boat charters are available. (See “Boats” p.83)
The refuge provides nesting, feeding, and resting grounds for a known 285 species. This is one of the most famous and productive ornithological points on the Atlantic seaboard . Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge consists of North and South Monomoy Islands and a portion of Morris Island, Wikis Way.
The nearly 3,000 acre refuge stretches approx. ten miles southward into the waters of Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Ninety-four percent of Monomoy’s acreage was designated a Wilderness Area in 1970, and is managed under the guidelines of the Wilderness Act of 1964. It is the only Wilderness area in southern New England.
To reach the headquarters on Morris Island, take Route 6 east to Route 137 south to Route 28. A left turn takes you through downtown Chatham (about 3 miles). Turn right at the stop sign to the Chatham Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station. Take the first left after the lighthouse, then the first right. Follow Morris Island Road to signs for the refuge on the left. Open Mon – Fri 8 am – 4 pm. For further information, call 508-945-0594. fws.gov/refuge/Monomoy

Chase Park, on Cross Street, includes the Grist Mill and the Chatham Labyrinth; it also contains a bowling green, picnic tables, and a comfort station
William Nickerson Memorial Park, The official site of Chatham’s WWII Memorial.
