T

he crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd – America’s pastime is ever-present in Harwich. Whether that’s the collegiate summer league Harwich Mariners, Cape Cod Senior Softball League, or Monomoy Regional High School baseball team, they all call Whitehouse Field in Harwich their home. And proving you’re never too old to run around the bases, some of the current Cape Cod Senior Softball players once played on a Cape League baseball team.

Harwich Mariners - Cape Cod Baseball League The Mariners have been a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League since 1930, when the team first began playing in Harwich. In the almost a century since the team has qualified for the postseason on 22 different occasions. Its first appearance was in 1968, when Harwich dropped the Cape Cod Baseball League championship series, 3-1, to the Falmouth Commodores. Harwich made the postseason three times in the 1970s, reaching, but losing, the championship series in 1978 and 1979. It was finally in 1983 that Harwich broke through, winning its first championship. A short time later, after finishing the season with the best record in the league in 1987, they defeated the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to win its second league title in five years. The Mariners saw little success after that with an 11-year postseason drought, but then stormed the Cape League in 2008, and swept the Cotuit Kettleers in dramatic fashion to claim the championship. The Mariners then swept the Falmouth Commodores in 2011 to win their second championship in four years. Since 2008, the Mariners have reached the playoffs in all but three subsequent seasons, and reached the championship round once prior to 2024, losing to Cotuit in 2019. They won the East Division three times in the regular season since 2008, with titles in 2012, 2014, and 2016. In 2024, the Mariners earned the No. 3 seed in the East playoffs and defeated No. 2 seed Chatham in a ninth-inning comeback to reach the East Championship Series. Once there, they swept No. 1 8

seeded Yarmouth-Dennis in two games and then defeated the Bourne Braves, 4-3, at Doran Park in Game 3 of the Championship Series, winning their sixth Cape League title and manager Steve Englert’s third at the helm. Behind the scenes is long-time Harwich resident Mary Henderson, who first got involved with the Mariners in 1982 as a host family, before she became the President of the Harwich Athletic Association in 1984, a position which she has held for the past 40 years. During her time with Harwich, Mary has overseen the franchise win CCBL Championships in 1983, 1987, 2008, 2011 and 2024. She has served with distinction in various capacities within the Cape Cod Baseball League, including Vice President and chair of the Nominating, Merchandise, and Hall of Fame committees. She oversees all aspects of the Mariners organization, including interns, concessions, and the team’s post-game meals. In 2019, Mary was recognized with the Dick Sullivan Executive of the Year Award. The Henderson family has hosted scores of Harwich players including CCBL Hall of Famers Casey Close, Scott Kamieniecki, and Pat Pacillo.

Cape Cod Senior Softball The Cape Cod Senior Softball League (CCSSL) started in 1987, at the time known as the Cape Old Timers Softball League, and is dedicated to senior softball. The first priority is to provide an atmosphere of recreation and enjoyment of the game of softball for players at all levels of athletic skill at a competitive level. They strive to provide a safe environment for all players. Since the organization of the CCSSL in 1987, they have expanded the membership to over 250 active players, each of whom brings a variety of skills and abilities to their respective 20 teams. Within the structure of CCCSL, teams are formed according to specific age levels: Division 1 (ages 55-65); Division 2 (ages 66-74); Division 3 (ages 75 and up). The league has also formed a new recre-

ational Masters Division, open to all regardless of age. Further, highly talented players are selected by managers to compete in local, state, and national tournaments following A.S.A. tournament requirements. Following the regular season, in early September a non-qualifier softball tournament, the Cape Cod Senior Classic, is held. This annual six-day event attracts over 50 teams from the East Coast and Canada and has received numerous accolades from visiting managers, players, and family members who attend and enjoy the ambiance of Cape Cod in the late summer The 2024 tournament was the 30th and has grown from 8 teams to a record 65 teams from 7 states. Over 1,000 players participated in almost 400 games. The formula of great competition, location, pristine fields in Harwich, Dennis, and Yarmouth, and a super team of volunteers make this the go to tournament in the East. This tournament is the cornerstone of the league and bring so much to the local economy in hotel stays, restaurants and more. Many of the players have been playing in this tournament for over 20 years. HarwichCC.com

Wequassett Resort & Golf Club Welcoming guests for almost a century, the Wequassett Resort & Golf Club is the region’s only double 5-star resort. Open since 1925, the Wequassett has become a special destination to generations of guests creating special memories, as well as numerous conferences and retreats that find the teambuilding activities and atmosphere energize and revitalize their teams. Over 400 years ago, the Wampanoag people began coming to the place they called Wequassett during the summer months. The name Wequassett means “crescent on the water.” Interestingly enough, the sandy beach at the resort, called Clam Point, extends out around the cove in the shape of a crescent. The Wampanoag paid great attention to the first appearance of every new moon and began their calendar at the first appearance of the first crescent moon of the vernal equinox. Whether Wequassett was named for the shape of the sand spit, for the new crescent moon, or for that moon’s reflection on the water remains a mystery. Among the many beautiful buildings HarwichCC.com

that surround the present resort are two noteworthy historic structures. The lovely Square Top, or Eben Ryder House, serves as the centerpiece of the complex and the location of restaurants Twenty-Eight Atlantic and Thoreau’s. At the entrance to the resort, the current registration building, the Warren Jenson Nickerson House, dates back to about 1740. Over 60 years ago, Wequassett opened as a vacation retreat. Today, they are proud to accommodate travelers from around the world, as well as a variety of national and international business meetings and conferences − not to mention hosting hundreds of weddings and social gatherings each year. The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club offers world-class accommodations, dining, and recreational facilities in a relaxed atmosphere with warm personal service, knowing your every need even before you say it. Wequassett is distinguished as the only Forbes Five Star Hotel on Cape Cod. In addition, Wequassett is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and its Legend Collection of globally recognized and award-winning hotels. Harwich MAGAZINE • 2025

VILLAGES OF HARWICH CENTER AND HARWICH PORT

VILLAGE OF WEST HARWICH

Winstead Inn & Winstead Beach Resort

The Platinum Pebble Boutique

The owners of the Winstead Inn and Winstead Beach Resort offer a range of lodging options − from the quaint and charming classic Winstead Inn located in Harwich Center, the historic heart of the seven villages of Harwich, to the steps-from-the-beach Winstead Beach Resort, which is also within walking distance to downtown Harwich Port dining, galleries, and shops. They have owned the Winstead Inn and the Winstead Beach Resort since 1989, beginning with the purchase of the beach property in October 1989 as a nine-guest room inn. They named it The Beach House Inn, and their first season welcoming guests was 1990. The popularity of the inn, which is located directly on the beach, inspired them to renovate the property adding 3,500 square feet of building and five new guest rooms, also giving the building a new architectural appeal in 1994. Having maxed out the guest rooms at the beach property, in 2000 they decided to renovate their home in Harwich Center, which was originally built in 1800. They completely rebuilt and expanded this property, and it then provided five bedrooms and two apartments as well. As part of the renovations, they had a pool built and marketed this property in conjunction with the Beach House Inn, renaming the brand as The Winstead Inn & Beach Resort. This incorporation gave them a total of seven guest rooms in the Village and 14 at the Beach. In 2014, they built a large addition, which incorporated a new guest services office constructed in the style 12

of the whimsical Beach Resort architecture, incorporating a signature lit cupola mounted on the roof with a starred flag weathervane. This 7,285-square-foot addition gave the property nine new guest rooms, for a total of 15 upscale luxurious suites. Guests check in at The Winstead Inn located in Harwich Center and are greeted by knowledgeable and friendly staff and given a tour of the property and its many amenities while on their way to their accommodations. A bountiful continental breakfast is served at both locations and both locations give guests the opportunity to walk to shops, restaurants, town amenities, and local activities and events.

WINSTEAD INN’S BANANA BREAD Makes three loaves of banana bread Ingredients 9-10 bananas 6 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla 2 cups sour cream 3 sticks butter 1 ½ cups sugar 4 ½ cups flour 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt Directions Preheat oven to 350°F Mix all ingredients together Bake for exactly one hour

The inn is a 1850s sea captain's house that turned into a traditional bed & breakfast in the 1940s. Previously known as the Lion’s Head Inn, it was modernized in 2010 into a contemporary bed and breakfast with eight guest bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and renamed The Platinum Pebble Boutique Inn. Back then, Lion’s Head Inn owners Marilyn and Tom Hull offered charming accommodation nestled in the heart of West Harwich, with comfortable lodging options for guests seeking a peaceful retreat. Current owners Sharon Foster and Shawn Gilmore purchased the inn in 2019. They both retired from jobs in Newport and they were looking for an inn − this was the one they wanted so they jumped in with both feet. They have made the Platinum Pebble a boutique bed and breakfast with a relaxing and peaceful environment for their guests. They offer a concierge service, which means providing their guests with advice on where to eat, visit, and explore. They also provide a lot of activities onsite such as the pool and bicycles to take off on for the day. A highlight also is the scrumptious breakfasts Sharon prepares each morning, which many guests enjoy poolside or in the seating area overlooking the pool. Since Sharon and Shawn bought the inn, they have brought their own special touches to the property and the guest experience. They have expanded the gardens and outdoor areas for guests to enjoy, including a meditative walking labyrinth, adding

Directions Preheat oven to 375 Mash the butter, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg together until smooth. Stir in the oats, then your choice of add-ins Core the apples. Make sure to get all the seeds and hard seed surround from inside. An apple corer works best, but you can use a knife and spoon. Place the apples in an 8" x 8" baking dish or in individual ramekins. Fill the apple with the oat mixture to the top. Pour in the apple cider or juice into the pan (not on the apples; to keep apples from burning). If using ramekins, use about 1 tablespoon per apple. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until apples appear slightly soft. Bake longer for mushier apples. Serve warm with salted caramel, whipped cream, or ice cream. They are also fine just on their own! A Beach Breeze Inn takes pride in going the extra mile for their guests. Planning their guest’s day with unique ways to enjoy the area is the exceptional service that has formed great friendships and the privilege of seeing familiar faces return year after year. Guestbook comments include: “Steve and Pam always went the extra mile. We will be back. Like family” and a couple from Australia commented, “Wonderful stay, such helpful and thoughtful hosts. Thank you for making our first visit so lovely.” With their spacious rooms, sparkling outdoor pool, and convenient barbecue area, this charming inn welcomes their guests and treat them as part of the family. A Beach Breeze Inn is a quaint Mom and Pop motel, which were all over the Cape in the 1950s and 60s but are slowly disappearing. Pam and Steve, and now Brant, hope to keep that Olde Cape Cod nostalgia while adding current day amenities.

VILLAGE OF SOUTH HARWICH

Handkerchief Shoals Inn

A BEACH BREEZE INN'S PAM’S FAMOUS (AND VERY EASY) BLUEBERRY MUFFINS Makes approximately 12 muffins Ingredients 2 boxes Jiffy Blueberry Muffin Mix 2 eggs ½ cup milk 1 pint fresh blueberries (can use frozen but best with fresh) Cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar mixed together (used for a topping) Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees In large bowl, carefully combine muffin mix, eggs, and milk slowly and thoroughly (ok if it still has small lumps, do not beat). Mix gently and thoroughly. Gently fold in blueberries. Put in paper cup lined muffins tins. Sprinkle spice mixture on top. Bake approximately 15 minutes (time depends on size of muffins; it takes longer if using frozen blueberries). Muffins should be golden brown. Enjoy!

This local tradition is ideally located at the junction of Deep Hole Road and Route 28 in South Harwich, within easy walking distance of beautiful Red River Beach on Nantucket Sound. Handkerchief Shoals Inn is a small (26-room) family-owned and -operated motel with a sparkling seasonal swimming pool and an attractive, spacious green area for socializing. Just a mile from Harwich Port shops and restaurants, along with Saquatucket Harbor to the west and a short drive to downtown Chatham to the east, while outside of the summer traffic common to both towns, Handkerchief Shoals Inn offers the optimal spot for the leisure and recreation of guests, whether beachgoing, sportfishing, filmmaking, or attending events such as wedding receptions at the nearby resorts. In line with local tradition, the name of the inn is taken from the historic Handkerchief Shoal lightship, which was once anchored in Nantucket Sound, as an aid to navigation. The lightship was named in turn for the area of heavy shoaling it marked to warn sailors away from dangerous shallows in the Monomoy passage. In addition to a beacon, the ship had the word HANDKERCHIEF painted in giant caps on the side, as a daymark to designate its location. Along with other lightships that dotted the coastline, the Handkerchief lightship was visible on the horizon 10 miles south of Harwich Port for many years, until its removal in 1951. The names of these lightships, which today still echo in the names of businesses along Route 28, are likely to resonate with local residents, who still recall this history. In short, “The name came with the place,” as owner Leonard Magliocca will tell you. With their extensive experience in hospitality operations and general contracting, the Magliocca family, owner/operators of Handkerchief Shoals Inn since 2020, were eager from the start to apply their skill set to the charming boutique motel (which belongs to an era of tourist experience before the creation of the National Seashore), recognizing in Handkerchief Shoals a "diamond in the rough" that, like its name, evokes the nostalgia of a longstanding Cape Cod tradition − Cape Cod family tourism and exceptional local hospitality. Their recent renovation of the inn combines the comfort and convenience of up-to-date lodging amenities with an authentic and cozy Cape Cod vibe.

MEYER LANDSCAPES

Their core values are the stepping stones to your oasis G

reg Meyer was born and raised in Yarmouth, and began his landscaping career at the age of 16. In his early years, Greg worked for several local landscape companies, where he learned most of the skills he still uses today. Feeling like he wanted more out of his career, Greg attended Stockbridge University from 2008 to 2010, earning a degree in Landscape Contracting. In the summer of 2010, shortly after graduating, Greg started Meyer Landscapes. Over the last 15 years, Greg has dedicated his time to building and growing Meyer Landscapes into what it is today − a company that not only values its customers, but also values its employees. It’s a simple yet powerful formula that works for Meyer Landscapes. Their crew and their values go hand in hand. They have an amazing team that includes an Operations Manager and Irrigation Specialist, a Maintenance Foreman, and a group of hardworking guys that get along well with one another. Each week, they have Monday Morning Meetings during which Greg spends about 30 minutes with his team to check in with them, review the company’s core values, discuss upcoming work for the week, identify any problems that arose in the prior week, and brainstorm what can be done to improve. The meetings always end with Greg opening the floor for suggestions, opinions, and concerns that any of the team members wish to address.

Meyer Landscapes has outlined a set of Core Values that every member of the team is expected to implement daily as they work with each other, engage with their customers, and undertake the work that they do. Those values are: teamwork, communication, discipline, accept responsibility, take initiative (make an extra effort), have integrity, be consistent, lead by example, and open communication. These values have been an integral part of minimizing misunderstandings, resolving internal issues, and keeping the peace within the company, all while providing customers with excellent service. Having everyone on the same page has created a more positive atmosphere, as well as a more synchronized work environment.

“A customer having a wonderful experience is a priceless feeling.” Cape Cod Native Greg Meyer, owner of Meyer Landscapes

The Meyer Landscapes team enjoys collaborating with customers who not only appreciate the beauty of a well-maintained landscape, but the investment and hard work that goes into it. Working with customers on a more personal level allows them to build long-lasting relationships. Some of their customers have been with Meyer for as long as the company has been in business. Some of recent changes at Meyer Landscapes include the addition of Greg’s wife, Christine, to the team in 2023. She had previously been working as an accountant and bookkeeper for 15 years, and with that experience, they felt it would be helpful to have her in the office, taking on internal operations such as scheduling, billing, and

general office management. When you call the office, 90% of the time you will speak with Christine. She makes a point of getting to know every customer before they have even set an appointment to meet with them. Meyer Landscapes is standing out from the competition by ensuring that customer service is their top priority. A customer having a wonderful experience with Meyer Landscapes is a priceless feeling, and it is what they strive for in every single job. “Mistakes happen, we are not perfect, but it is what you do after that mistake that the customer will remember,” says Greg Meyer. “If there is an error made on our watch, we correct it immediately.” The Meyer Landscapes team also take pride in their transparency. With all of their clients, Greg says, “We are upfront about our timeline, even when we are six weeks out and could potentially lose that job. It is important to be upfront and honest about what we can do, and when we can do it.” Moving forward, Meyer Landscapes is always looking for more ways to grow, whether it is adding new members to the team who understand and respect their core values as a company or implementing new services that will benefit their customers. The entire team at Meyer Landscapes works hard to make sure every customer can trust in them to make their home oasis something they will enjoy for years to come.

The 203 Bank Street and Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve Collaboration

T

he Harwich Fire Association and Harwich Conservation Trust embarked on a unique collaboration in 2022 that has become an amazing community focal point, linking two exciting preservation projects together. The Harwich Fire Association and Harwich Conservation Trust joined forces to preserve two vital parts of the village of Harwich Port, in an endeavor that is bringing about the restoration of the town’s first firehouse and enhancing the pathway for public access for Harwich Conservation Trust’s ecologically restored 66-acre Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve.

Harwich Conservation Trust/Steve and Eileen Furlong

The Harwich Fire Association had purchased and has been restoring the town’s first fire station, the Old Bank Street Firehouse, located at 203 Bank Street in Harwich Port. The station, which was built in 1928, was the heart of the Harwich Fire Department until 1995 when the department relocated to Sisson Road. The Old Firehouse represents an important piece of town and fire department history. The Harwich Fire Association’s restoration of the building maintains its beauty and simplicity to symbolize the community, history, and tradition of the fire service. The firehouse will provide a permanent home for Harwich’s first motorized fire apparatus, a 1928 Maxim Pumper, and other memorabilia of Harwich Fire Department history. The building will

also serve many association and community needs, providing 1,750 square feet of event space, a commercial kitchen, and three apartments to aid in the housing crisis. The old firehouse on Bank Street sits next to the former cranberry bogs that are now part of the Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve. Over the years, Harwich Conservation Trust has worked with several farmers in town to acquire both retired bogs and working bogs. The future of each site is carefully considered based on the property location, the economics of the site, condition of infrastructure, and landowner interests. In this century, ecological restoration is being recognized as a way to enhance the health of the land, water, and wildlife of retired bogs, as well as offer recreation potential. The Harwich Conservation Trust, the Harwich Community Preservation Committee and Town Meeting voters, the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service partnered to fund the eco-restoration of the retired bogs known as the Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve in Harwich Port. The collaborative effort enhanced nearly a mile of stream and over 44 acres of adjacent wetland habitat, resulting in improved 28

fish passage, habitat diversity, wetland stormwater absorption, water quality, and ecological resilience in a climate changing world. The design included construction of a more sinuous stream course, ponds of varying sizes, a salt marsh, large woody habitat installations throughout the channel and floodplain, and native tree and shrub plantings. In December 2022, the Harwich Fire Association and the Harwich Conservation Trust jointly acquired the 2-acre Cold Brook Gateway Property at 203 Bank Street in an innovative collaboration that will use each organization’s talents and resources to protect history, nature, and support our local community in many ways. When the Cold Brook trails reopen, people will experience enhanced access to the Preserve’s scenic walking trails including a half-mile wheelchair accessible All Persons Trail, continuing the Harwich Conservation Trust tradition of connecting the local community with the natural world. The entrance to this improved habitat and trails is found at the restored Old Bank Street Firehouse, located at 203 Bank Street in Harwich Port. This dedicated partnership is a model of creativity and commitment to our town and its history and natural beauty.

“We hope to create a space where people can come together to meet, to learn, or to celebrate. The building will serve as a monument to the rich tradition and history of the Harwich Fire Department.” Bruce Young, President of the Harwich Fire Association

Cape Cod, an honor that’s earned once the business demonstrates the ability for strong sales. Lynne and Paul have definitely proven they have that ability – and then some. In 2007, they were presented with the opportunity to buy their current building in Harwich, and it was everything they wanted. At that same time, they were looking to expand their offerings and become a full-fledged hardware store. Paul and Lynne consider Harwich Paint to be three stores in one: a complete paint store offering Benjamin Moore paint; a large hardware store supplying nuts, bolts, tools, grills, etc.; and a Hunter Douglas Gallery. It can truly be a one stop shopping experience for the homeowner. In 2021 they jumped with both feet in and opened Chatham Paint and Hardware in downtown Chatham to better serve their large Chatham base of customers.

When asked about the impressive success of their business, their reply was, “The key has always been our staff, who are members of the community. We have over 40 full- and part-time employees, some who have been with us since our first store in Orleans. Over the years, our customers and staff have developed great relationships and this trust factor continues to make our store stronger.” Paul and Lynne are no strangers to giving back to the community, and for the past 10 years they have been partners with the Harwich Chamber of Commerce for such events as the Toast of Harwich and Festival of Trees, helping continue the mission of the Harwich Chamber to make for a sustainable Harwich for our businesses and our community. This past fall, Harwich Paint and Decorating not only donated supplies for but was part of scenes in a movie that was filmed here in Harwich that we are looking forward to seeing on the big screen this year.

While many family-owned businesses are multi-generational, currently, Paul and Lynne’s children are not involved with the stores. ow into its 153rd year in business, Hinckley Home Center was founded by the Hinckley family in 1872 and has been in continuous operation ever since. Jim Wansiewicz was the CEO of Gulf Oil at the height of his career in the energy industry and was tasked with transforming the eastern seaboard assets acquired into a successful and dynamic oil company. After that career, he and his wife Phyllis wanted a new challenge. Jim and Phyllis, along with their sons Adam and Keith, started a family business – taking over Hinckley Home Center Harwich and Vineyard Haven. Hinckley Home Center, which continues to be a family-owned and -operated business, has been an integral part of the Cape Cod community for decades. The Wansiewicz family purchased the business in 1994 and opened a sister location on Martha's Vineyard, the Vineyard Home Center. HarwichCC.com

The East Harwich location is comprised of 10 acres, including 20,000 square feet of retail and storage space. The current premises include a fully stocked lumber yard, a hardware store, and a full home showroom where customers can purchase anything one needs to decorate, restore, rebuild, or construct. Whether you are a professional, own a commercial business, or are a homeowner, you will find what you need, competitively priced, with free advice and delivery to do what you need to do. At the Hinckley Home Center, their mission is to act as a resource to their community by providing high quality goods at a fair price, consistently creating a positive and memorable shopping experience for their customers, and developing innovative solutions to the many challenges of the construction industry. Being a part of their community and giving back is so very important to Hinckley Home Center – two years ago they launched Law Enforcement and Public Safety Appreciation Days, one in the spring and the other in the fall. These community events welcome the local departments to display their vehicles and thank each department’s teams with lunch from Red River BBQ Food Truck and a local band. Partnering with the Harwich Chamber of Commerce to make these days about thanking our police and fire departments for keeping our Harwich community safe every day, it’s their way of giving back. One of the advantages of family businesses is that the employees also become family. The team at Hinckley’s is especially unique in that there are three couples who have been long-time employees at Hinckley’s. You can feel it in the atmosphere, where you are greeted with welcoming familiar faces and that sets the tone for your experience. The employees also reflect the values of the Wansiewicz family. Your experience is above and beyond just selling you an item, this is what makes for the loyal repeat customers. Hinckley Home Center is your family owned and operated one-stop shop for all of your construction and home improvement needs on Cape Cod.

When they upgraded and opened the current combination of convenience store and gas station in 1993, there really wasn't a lot around other than Stop and Shop, Staggs Chevy, and the East Harwich Plaza. They didn’t have Dunkin’ Donuts at first, but that came in after the first year. Business was a little slow to start but as East Harwich grew, so did their business.

T

he Meservey family has owned and operated this location for three generations and is now moving into the fourth as Dan Meservey Jr.’s sons run the day-to-day business. Longevity and strong family work ethics are the key ingredients and strong foundation of their family-owned business. In 1935, Dan’s grandfather Roy Meservey’s brother George started the Harwich Station, and since then there have been

Dan Meservey Jr.’s mother, father, sister, brother, and Dan himself all worked at the station, alternating from the Chatham Station to the Pleasant Lake General Store and their Mobil Station in Yarmouth. They started out as a Mobil Station as they had been in Chatham for many years then then they switched to Hess. When Hess sold off their retail stores, Meservey’s switched to Shell, where they have had a great relationship.

As the business grew, the need for more employees became evident. They were fortunate to have hired many local teens and adults over the years, and they have enjoyed seeing each of their employees grow up and then move on to their adult lives. For many years, Dan and his wife Tina operated and grew the business. Now the fourth generation has joined the team and currently their oldest son Garrett runs the station, and their youngest Brayden works with him learning the ropes. Also, when they need more support, their middle son Brett jumps in to help when he’s not racing around the speedway. Today, Tina and Dan work in the office taking care of bills and the mountain of paperwork and licensing they deal with. It is a true hands-on family-owned and -operated business. The Meservey’s are community minded and are sponsors of the Harwich Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas in Harwich Weekend, including the spectacular fireworks.

ith 21 saltwater and freshwater beaches, the shores of Harwich offer something for everyone. Harwich’s many Nantucket Sound ocean beaches provide gently rolling waves, soft sand, seashells to discover, and plenty of room for a game of football in the sand. Meanwhile, with more than a dozen freshwater ponds, including Long Pond, the Cape’s largest lake, you’ll never lack for fun in the sun, or an escape of relaxation. Swimming, collecting treasure, relaxing in the sun, nature walks… Harwich’s premier location offers many ways to enjoy the beaches of Cape Cod. Nantucket Sound, the triangular area between Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard in the Atlantic Ocean, is a diverse marine habitat encompassing the open sea as well as salt marshes with warm-water beaches. The Sound temperatures approach 75 degrees in the summer due to being shielded from the southward flowing Newfoundland current. The fall weather is mild, keeping the waters warm longer – making these months glorious beach-going times. Many memories have been made at the beach – family days spent frolicking in the sand and waves, long walks along stone jetties, evenings spent watching the sun set on the horizon. Each of Harwich’s beaches has its own distinct personality – why not visit them all to see which best fits your mood? Some of the most popular ocean beaches include Red River Beach, Bank Street Beach, and Earle Road Beach. Notable freshwater beaches include Long Pond and Sand Pond. The beach isn’t just for swimming and sunning, either! Play catch, fly a kite, practice beach yoga, toss a Frisbee, or just relax with a book and enjoy the gorgeous view. The many ponds in town offer clean, family-friendly spots for swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, and, of course, boating. There are two ramps on Long Pond. Motor-

boats and waterskiing are allowed on most bodies of water, while jet-skis are limited to ocean waters. Rules of the waterways and boat trailer stickers can be obtained at the Harbormaster’s Office. There are varying amenities at the different harbors and launches, so be sure to check before you go. There is no shortage of options in Harwich – there are dozens of different venues where you can enjoy fun in the sun, including 11 miles of tidal shoreline along Nantucket Sound and Pleasant Bay and numerous freshwater beaches. You can spend one day frolicking in the salt water at an ocean beach, and the next at a freshwater pond enjoying a cool, refreshing dip. For a full list of beaches and details on beach stickers and amenities, see the sidebar below.

WalkingMiss Daisy

M

iss Daisy is the Yorkie owned by the Harwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director and is a longtime fixture around town. Now 12, she came to Cyndi Williams as a rescue puppy when she was 4 months old. She loves exploring all Seven Villages of Harwich. Whether you are a resident of Harwich all year-round or a visitor who comes during your favorite time of the year, be that summer or the shoulder seasons, we offer so much. Miss Daisy invites you to come by her mom’s office at the Harwich

Chamber of Commerce and pick up your little Miss Daisy cut-out – then take her around town while you explore and discover hidden favorites and hot spots. Take a photo of your very own Miss Daisy around Harwich and send it to cyndi@harwichcc. com – it just might be featured on the Chamber’s social media! If you are lucky, you may even catch Miss Daisy herself hanging out and greeting people at the Harwich Information Center. Throughout the year, Miss Daisy loves to explore Harwich. In the winter, Miss Daisy

and all her canine friends can visit the beaches in town as long as they are on a leash. Even those pups who are not a fan of the cold water love being able to sniff the sand and stretch their legs. In the spring, Miss Daisy and her mom stroll through Agway of Cape Cod (with locations in Chatham, Dennis, and Orleans), where she reminds mom to pick up a supply of treats for her and her two sisters at home, Miss Harley and Miss Lee. During the summer, Miss Daisy loves to be outside, of course. A favorite outing is traipsing through the streets of

Harwich Port at the Wednesday Night Music Strolls, where she meets lots of other dogs and gets pets from many adoring residents and visitors. The fall just might be Miss Daisy’s favorite time of the year. It’s a great season to enjoy the many beautiful walking trails throughout Harwich’s Seven Villages. Check with the Harwich Conservation Trust for a complete map of all the lovely locales to explore.

very town should have its own band − Harwich does, and it’s turning 50. As the Harwich Town Band celebrates its 50th season, we wanted to share a tale from its early days.

On June 26, 1975, a town band was formed and over the 50 years has grown and been fortunate to have three conductors, Anthony Stevens, John Hagon, and Peter Cobb, all bringing their own talent to the lead of our Town Band. The current conductor Thomas Jahnke continues all of the traditions everyone has come to enjoy, whether playing on a Tuesday evening in July and August in the bandstand of Brooks Park or the Friday night Harwich Port Stroll of Christmas in Harwich at TD Bank and the Holiday Concert in the Harwich Community Center. The Harwich Town Band even takes its show on the road and makes guest appearances in other towns. This talented group of musicians will make you tap your feet and sing along, and you might even spot the little ones marching around the bandstand in special hats. Harwich has a melody in our hearts and in our town. Happy 50th to the Harwich Town Band!

About 25 years ago, another milestone, the Wednesday Night Musical Strolls, began. Thanks to the visionaries of the day, Ron Remondino and Jennifer Chase, the town started having bands on every other Wednesday to drive people into the businesses for shopping and dining. That summer tradition has continued and grown -- now every Wednesday features Port Summer Nights Wednesday Musical

Each Stroll has music in the air and in our hearts as you see all ages dancing and enjoying the atmosphere of the bands that are strategically placed along the strolling route from the top of Bank Street to across South Street at the parking lot of Sativa and sister store Solis, owned by Ron Remondino and run by daughter Calista and her dynamic team. Every Wednesday the four bands consist of local favorites, like The Johns, Mike Dumas, Pitchfork, Elmore and the Counter-fits, North Country, Catie Flynn, Monica Rizzio, Amy and Duel, Just Like That, Northern Lights, Mike’s Music Program, All Worn Out Jug Band, Ukeladies and Drumma Queens to mention just a few. The lineup is traditionally in place after the holidays and always has music for every fan.

The 2025 Musical Lineup is sure to delight, and let’s not forget the Harwich Chamber members and sponsor tables and vendors along the way, like the Pilgrim Masonic Lodge selling the best and freshest popcorn on the Cape. Stroll down a bit and you’ll find the weekly Café and Grill of the Pilgrim Congregational Church. haven’t been, come and enjoy the local musicians every Wednesday in July and August from 5 to 8 p.m. The Harwich Cape Verdean Festival brings the food, arts, culture, and music of the heritage of our Cape Verdean residents to Brooks Park. The music of the John Miranda Band bellows in the air as the smell of Jag and other cultural foods tempt your palette. Vendors share their art and many other items. Sharing the Cape Verdean gifts of talents from cooking and the special forms of art through dance, painting, quilting and the music brings everyone together and Brooks Park comes together. Watch for the 2025 July date and come enjoy, and learn about your Cape Verdean neighbors. The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra resides at Pilgrim Congregational Church – a true focal point in Harwich Port. Founded last spring by Conductor Matthew Scinto, the orchestra is a unique collaboration of local individuals, artists, and musicians, joined with the spirit of Cape Cod. The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra strives to bring a new light to the classical music genre and broaden the experience for both young and mature audiences. Making each concert unique and memorable, the stunning ensemble Matthew has brought together is nothing less than breathtaking. When the orchestra was created, the vision was to bring together talented composers and musicians while celebrating the Cape’s unique beauty. We look forward to future events which will continue the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra’s creative approach to offering musical opportunities to our residents and visitors. The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra brings a passionate awareness of classical music that all ages will appreciate and enjoy. The coming season is sure to hold a special melody in Harwich – come out and feel the rhythm.

COMMUNITY

Left: Brenda Collins and Albert Raneo at the Harwich Festival in 2019. Right: Albert Raneo and Ella Lombard are fondly called the patriarch and matriarch of North Harwich and Cape Verdeans. Family and community were extremely important to Albert, and he enjoyed meeting relatives near and far and sharing all the branches of the family with everyone he met, explaining how they were all connected. This was a big part of his charm. Heritage held great meaning for Albert, and it was important to him that his family members knew where they came from and how the fit into their community. He was passionate about keeping the Cape Verdean culture alive and sharing it with so many – his storytelling was legendary. Albert was a founding member of the Cape Verdean Educational Outreach, where he continued to share and educate students in our local schools about the history and culture of Cape Verde. For many years, he also oversaw an exhibit at the Harwich Historical Society at Brooks Academy, where he shared with residents and visitors the history of the Cape Verdeans and what they meant to Harwich. As history shows us, many of the original Cape Verdean people settled primarily in the North Harwich and Pleasant Lake villages of Harwich due to the rich farming soil. These settlements also provided a place where people could easily connect and make their own community within the larger community of Harwich. Although it was rocky in the beginning, the Cape Verdeans persevered to make Harwich their home. Over the years, the Cape Verdeans of Harwich have been very active in the community. They owned numerous businesses, taught in the schools, held town and government positions, became doctors, lawyers, musicians, artists, homeowners, and found success in many other professions. Most of

them were educated through the Harwich Public Schools and then Monomoy Regional School District.

and family values of the Cape Verdean community that Albert for instilled in the deep roots of this community.

A highlight for Albert was arranging a visit by President Francisco Tavares, Mayor of the Island of Brava, to Harwich. He came to America to build upon the relationships with the Cape Verdean community, especially in Harwich, and to encourage the community to learn about their heritage and history. Strengthening the communication between the two nations broadened the understanding and connection and supported cultural activities and traditions.

Another, more tangible legacy Albert left our community is in the collections of Cape Verdean books found in both Brooks Free Library and Chase Library. These collections offer developing an education on how the Cape Verdean community came to be such an integral part of the town of Harwich. Take a moment and check out one of these collections.

Each July, the Cape Verdean community comes together for the annual Cape Verdean Festival in Brooks Park in Harwich Center. Here you will relish the amazing cultural food, music, and arts. Albert was always right in the middle of it all, sharing facts and stories. His legacy lies in the strong bond

Part of Albert’s charm was how he would share in his talks how the people of our Harwich community were interconnected and what their place in our community was and meant to who Harwich is. He would stress that everyone belonged. Thank you for all your lessons and stories – they will live on.

A person who never has to be asked to do something, a caring person who is not afraid to be involved, the person who does something not looking for recognition, and enjoys working and being with people. This was a favorite quote of Harwich native Albert Raneo Sr. – it captures the true essence of this important figure.

53,200 Meals.

We’re working to knock hunger out of the park! Every time a participating home team hits a home run in a Cape Cod Baseball League game, we donate $50 to the Family Pantry of Cape Cod, which in turn, provides meals to our neighbors in need. Over the last six years, we are pleased to say our Home Runs Against Hunger program has served up more than 53,000 meals.
