Cover Artist: Susan Tilton Pecora Susan Tilton Pecora is a distinguished American artist celebrated for her evocative portrayals of New England's towns, harbors, and rural landscapes. Working primarily in watercolor, egg tempera, and oil, she captures the region's unique light and atmosphere with remarkable sensitivity. ​Raised in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Pecora developed an early appreciation for the coastal scenery of her hometown. She pursued formal art education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and further honed her skills under the mentorship of Jack Flynn, A.W.S., after relocating to Western Massachusetts in 1974.​ Pecora's artistic achievements have garnered national recognition. She is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society and has exhibited her work across the United States, earning accolades from institutions such as the National Art League in New York and the San Diego Art Association. Her paintings have been featured in publications like American Artist Magazine and Splash: The Best of Watercolor by North Light Books.

Beyond her studio practice, Pecora has contributed significantly to art education. She has taught at Bay Path University and the George Walter Vincent Smith Museum in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her commitment to sharing her craft extends to her role as the host of the PBS television series Reflections Through Watercolor, where she explores and paints picturesque locations throughout western New England.

Pecora's work has also intersected with notable cultural events. In 2007, she was commissioned to create a painted ornament for the White House Holiday Tree.

Additionally, thirteen of her paintings were featured in a calendar for Willie Nelson's Farm Aid, highlighting her engagement with themes of rural life and community.

Her artworks are represented by several galleries, including R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, Massachusetts, and The Lobster Pot in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Through her art, teaching, and public outreach, Susan Tilton Pecora continues to enrich the American art landscape with her vivid depictions of New England's charm and character.

In Loving Memory of Mark & Jane Peters

The Truro Chamber of Commerce would like to thank and dedicate this year's book to Mark and Jane Peters.

Their combined selfless dedication and leadership were the cornerstone of the Chamber's success for many years.

Jane, who served as our Executive secretary and treasurer until her retirement, was dedicated to our organization's values and responsible for all of our day to day operations and member services. Her networking and organizational skills kept everything and everyone, moving forward.

Jane was also lovingly known as our "Town Crank", and could be seen at every town election greeting voters and "cranking" the ballot box. Her bright smile and generous nature reminding everyone what small town Truro is all about.

Mark, served for several years as our organization's president before illness forced his retirement. He was extremely knowledgeable about our town's history and was steadfast in his love of all things Truro. He had a commanding presence and proudly lent his skills as a moderator to several town boards and organizations. After his retirement as our president he continued to serve the Chamber at our information booth and loved sharing Truro history with our many visitors.

Thank you Mark and Jane for your unwavering commitment to our organization, and our Truro Community. You will always be remembered for the positive impact you had on so many of us.

Originally a seasonal hotel built in 1907, The Highland House Museum is just steps away from Cape Cod’s first lighthouse, Highland Light.

Beginning in 1968 and with the advent of the Cape Cod National Seashore, the Truro Historical Society transformed the iconic hotel into a 17-room museum, charting Truro’s colorful history from the original indigenous Wampanoag people to the fishermen, farmers, families, and artists who shaped the town since its incorporation in 1709. With two floors of exhibits, art, and artifacts, the museum will delight and inform visitors of all ages.

In 2023, in partnership with the Cape Cod National Seashore and the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, a traditional Wetu (dwelling) and a Three Sisters Garden was constructed adjacent to the museum. They provide a glimpse into the resourcefulness of the native people and their way of life before the town was settled by European immigrants.

Truro History | Highland Light

Cape Cod’s oldest lighthouse, known locally as Highland Light, sits on the Highland 120 feet above the ocean, with its beam elevation 183 feet above the sea. Ships can identify it from 23 miles away.

The first light was established in 1797, 510 feet from the cliff edge, rebuilt in 1853, and replaced in 1857 by the current structure. It had never been moved. However, because of the eroding cliff, a Committee To Save The Cape Cod Light was formed in early 1990 to “effect the move of the Cape Cod Highland Lighthouse from its endangered site to a place of safety.”

The sea is a relentless neighbor. On July 11, 1996, with only 100 feet left from the edge of the cliff, the Lighthouse was moved about 50 feet towards safety. By July 29, 1996 it had been moved 453 feet to its new location about 550 feet from the cliff edge and safe for another 200 years.

William S. Fitts is a well-known master carpenter, chef and artist in Massachusetts.

His book "An Artist's Recipes" is filled with his hand-drawn recipes, sketches and paintings of local Provincetown art.

ORV (Off Road Vehicles)

For the full list of rules and regulations please visit www.truro-ma.gov/truro-beach-office ORV stickers are required year-round and may be obtained online or at the Beach Office, located at 36 Shore Rd during the summer season.

During the off-season stickers are available online at www.truro-ma.gov/ truro-beach-office. Stickers must be permanently affixed and visible on the driver’s side, front bumper. Stickers are non-transferable. Stickers which are altered, defaced, copied, or unreadable are not valid and will be confiscated.

The ORV driving corridor will, at times, be below the spring high water marks. Vehicles are not permitted to drive or park on beach grass, coastal dunes, coastal embankments, marshes, or nesting areas. Travel is only allowed on town-owned property. The Town of Truro does not and cannot grant access to beach areas privately owned. Entry on private land may subject ORV drivers to claims of trespassing by the property owner(s).

Pedestrians and those who are sitting on the beach always have the right of way. Always use caution. The speed limit is 10 MPH. Camping and sleeping on town-owned beaches is not permitted. Beach fires are limited and require a permit obtained through the Beach Office.

Access by ORV traffic on the bay beaches of Truro is at Corn Hill Beach and Beach Point during the hours of 6:00 pm – 9:00 am, from the third Saturday in June – Labor Day. All vehicles must be off the beach by 9:00 am during the season.

From Labor Day through the third Saturday in June, individuals with a valid permit can access the corridor 24 hours a day.

Massachusetts Bicycle Safety In Massachusetts bicycles must follow all “Rules of the Road” that normally apply to automobiles  You must obey all Stop signs and traffic signals.  You must ride your bike in the same direction as other traffic.  You must stop at all road crossings and crosswalks.  You are considered a vehicle when you are on your bike and you must wait until traffic has cleared to proceed.  If you dismount your bicycle, you then become a pedestrian and have the right of way.

You are subject to tickets and fines if you do not obey the law.

Whether you are just turning 60 or older than 60, we are a place to connect you with resources. We offer a wide variety of programs such as: educational, cultural, health and wellness, multigenerational, exercise classes & social opportunities. The Truro Council on Aging provides information and referrals to local community resources, nutritional and benefits assistance, and services to Home Bound residents.

The Truro Council on Aging (COA) operates out of the Community Center which is open Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Council is located at the Truro Community Center, next to the Truro Public Library and Puma Park.

The Council on Aging provides curb to burb van transportation services for medical appointments, shopping/errands, programming/classes at the COA, including and Community Lunch to ambulatory Truro residents age 60+. In addition, a wheelchair accessible bus is available to individuals with physical limitations who use wheelchairs and other mobility aids. Ride requests require a minimum of at least two business days’ notice.

Our welcoming location is adjacent to the Community Center and the community-built Puma Park playground. Inside the library, families will find a dedicated children’s area brimming with books, toys, puzzles, and magazines, alongside enriching programs designed to foster a lifelong love of learning. Outside, the adventure continues with our mud kitchen, sensory wall, and food forest path.

Adults can explore the latest bestsellers, timeless classics, and a wide selection of DVDs, as well as intriguing and practical non-fiction on our lower level. Our wireless internet is accessible 24/7, and during opening hours, we provide faxing, wireless printing, and scanning services. Need a short-term item? Our Library of Things offers solutions from irons to VHS players. The Friends of the Truro Library also maintain a used bookstore on the lower level, with proceeds directly supporting the library.

Even without a library card, many of our services and programs are open to all. However, a card is necessary to borrow materials. Massachusetts residents and Truro property owners enjoy free Truro Library cards, while out-of-state visitors are asked to pay a modest annual fee. Lucie's Beach Plum Jelly

4 cups Beach Plum Juice * 7 ½ cups white sugar 1/2 package Certo™ (6) 8oz Ball Mason Jars™ with lids and rings, Scalded Paraffin wax for sealing (melted in a double boiler) In a large soup pot, combine juice and sugar - bring to a boil (Be very careful mixture doesn’t boil over. It will try) Reduce heat to a gentle boil. add Certo™ and continue to boil for 1minute, until syrupy, stirring constantly Pour the juice into jars, leaving room for wax, let cool 1/2 hour Seal jar with paraffin wax, do not go above the rim (let wax cool) Label and date jars, cover with metal lids and rings Store up to 1 year in a cool dark place.

The wax seal can be discarded when the jar is opened. * You can use freshly picked beach plums, frozen juice or berries If using fresh or frozen berries, boil down fruit using minimal water.

Drain through cheesecloth to obtain clear juice.

Extra juice can be frozen (Use empty milk jugs) for up to 6 months.

A mixture of red and blue beach plums is best.

Remove stems and debris before cooking. ** If the mixture hasn’t “jelled” after cooking and letting sit for ½ hr, it can be re-purposed as a sauce, or re-boiled by adding another ½ package of Certo™.

If re-boiling, you must re-scaled jars Pro tip: Do not make Jelly on a rainy day; it will not jell!

The Recreation & Beach Department provides residents and visitors with year-round programs and activities for various ages and is responsible for managing the 11 town-owned beaches.

The department's main office is located at the Truro Community Center (7 Standish Way, North Truro) and consists of an administrative office, a recreation lounge, and an all-purpose auditorium. Additionally, the center is home to Puma Park Playground; a multi-generational park consisting of a youth playground, outdoor fitness equipment, and a rubber surfaced walking track.

The Department's seasonal beach office is located at 36 Shore Road, North Truro. In addition, the Department oversees activities on Snow's Field and the Truro Central School's field.

Most recreational programs offered by the Department are open to residents and visitors of the Town of Truro and include adult fitness classes, sports programs for children and adults, school vacation programs, special events, and the popular Summer Rec. Youth Program for participants ages 5 -13.

Cape Cod National Seashore

In 1961, President Kennedy signed a bill which forever protected over 40,000 acres and almost 30 miles of shoreline on Cape Cod from Chatham to Provincetown. The National Seashore maintains beaches, hiking and biking trails, and historical buildings for the enjoyment of all. It has two visitor centers, one and Eastham and the other in Provincetown.

The Province Lands visitor Center in Provincetown is on Race Point Road off of Route Six. It features a 360 degree observation deck with views of the Province Lands dunes, the Outer Beach, and the Atlantic Ocean. They have knowledgeable staff to assist in trip planning, ranger-guided activities, exhibit on local plants and animals, an indoor theater screening park orientation films, and a gift shop & bookstore for maps, puzzles, games, and more.

The Salt Pond visitor Center in Eastham is on the corner of Route Six and Doane Road. It features an auditorium where orientation movies are shown, a museum, a gift shop & bookstore, and an information desk that is staffed by knowledgeable rangers. A bike trail and walking trail starts at the center as well.

During the 1700’s, in addition to fishing and agriculture, the hunting of whales and blackfish offered a cash income at relatively low risk. From the French and Indian Wars, through the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812, Truro both participated and prospered.

Gentlemen from Truro were sent to Nantucket to teach the islanders their art of hunting the sea. Small ship building in the harbor, fishing, and salt works through the use of windmills, combined with large gardens is what made for a good life in this small hamlet.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the Pamet Harbor shoaled in.

This ended the shipbuilding and the easy access to the bay with an allweather harbor for a refuge. Beach Point threatened East Harbor, which had become only at the highest tides in the Fall and Spring. Farming alone wouldn’t sustain a booming economy, so Truro started getting smaller as many of its residents moved away.

Shortly after the Civil War, the railroad came through Truro with its terminus in Provincetown. Transportation and access was now available on a more reliable venue than the weather, tide, and sea. Those farmers left in Truro had discovered that sandy soil was excellent for growing asparagus and turnip. Asparagus for the Boston Yankees, turnip for the Irish, a swamp garden, a few cows and chickens, a lot of hard work, and a decent living could be made. Cranberries had always grown in the wild in Truro. The problem was that hand or dry harvesting was both time consuming and expensive. In the later part of the 1800’s, wet harvesting became very popular. It was cheap, and it was profitable.

Not withstanding the agreeable summer climate, salt water bathing prevented the exposure to Polio. Ocean swimming has insured Truro’s popularity long after vaccines were developed.

Still, Truro was a sleepy little town as it entered the 20th century. It had three whistle stops, South Truro, Pamet Harbor, and North Truro.

Given its isolation, the flu pandemic was not as severe as in other parts of the country. Truro did have a number of victims, as local cemeteries can attest.

The biggest event in Truro’s history was yet to come. Shortly after World War II, the Federal Government straightened and rebuilt Route 6.

Millions and millions of people were now a day’s drive away from Truro. On many days during the summer season, Truro may have as many as 15,000 people enjoying the sun, the woods, and the beach.

Another substantial factor in today’s Truro is the creation of the National Seashore in 1960. This has preserved almost two thirds of Truro in its natural state. Truro is extremely fortunate that much of what the Pilgrims saw, and the Pamets enjoyed, will be there for future generations to come.

Beach Access For Individuals with Disabilities Corn Hill Beach and Head of the Meadow Beach Both Head of the Meadow Beach, on the ocean, and Corn Hill Beach, on the bay, have accessible mats and wheelchairs for individuals with mobility or physical disabilities. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed from the beach attendant on duty between 10:00 am and 3:30 pm, for transportation to and from the beach. One must be accompanied by a support person, who will assist in the use of the chair and is willing and able to push the chair over sand. A release form must be completed, and a license or other State-issued ID must be left with the attendant during use. Accessible bathrooms are available at both beaches. Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch: Celebrating 50 Years of Ocean Stewardship

Founded by Albert Avellar in 1975, the company is now owned by his son, Steve Milliken Education, and Adventure In 1975, Albert Avellar—a seasoned Provincetown fisherman with deep roots in the waters of Cape Cod Bay —and Stellwagen Bank, made a bold decision that would change the region’s relationship with the sea forever. Trading in nets for binoculars, he launched a revolutionary idea: to take passengers out not to fish, but to simply watch whales.

At the time, whale watching was virtually unknown on the East Coast. But Avellar, ever observant, had noticed something significant—his fishing charter passengers were more captivated by the surfacing whales than the day’s catch. Sensing both a business opportunity and a chance to foster a deeper public appreciation for marine life, he began offering daily whale watch trips aboard a converted fishing vessel. Thus, Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch was born—and with it, the beginning of commercial whale watching on the East Coast.

Over the decades, Dolphin Fleet has grown from a single boat to a respected fleet offering daily excursions into the rich waters of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Blessing of the Fleet – Provincetown

About The Festival In 1947 two Provincetown fishermen made a visit to the neighboring port of Gloucester for their annual Blessing of the Fishing Fleet celebration.

The tradition was a way to honor and help protect New England men whose lives were dependent on the sea. Inspired by their trip, the travelers brought the Festival tradition to Provincetown, the first landing place of the Pilgrims.

Provincetown has a rich seafaring history including whaling, pirates and most especially, fishing. At one time our harbor was home to over 150 fishing schooners. The vast majority of these fishermen immigrated from Portugal. This custom of honoring our fishing community has thrived and expanded into a four day Portuguese Festival & Blessing of the Fleet celebration held each year on the last weekend of June.

Nearly 100 volunteers are led by a Festival Team that includes more than 3 generations of Provincetown history. We proudly share Portuguese culture while giving back to the community. In 2007 the Festival installed lights in Portuguese Square. In 2016, the Festival installed a plaque in memory of Fishermen Lost At Sea. We are committed to a joyful Festival experience for all and proudly carry on the traditions of those who have come before us.

The Spare Simplicity of a Gravel Garden Finding drama in pebbly textures, silvery tones, tough ‘maritimas,’ and chance

A large part of our back yard is a former dog run, which looked fairly bleak when my husband and I first laid eyes on it on a March day several years ago. Even though its most prominent features were cyclone fencing and scraggly junipers, I saw something lying on the still-frozen ground that really got my wheels turning: lots and lots of gravel.

Since I first began gardening decades ago, I’ve dreamed of one day making a garden of plants that would be happy in a layer of silvery pea gravel.

It turns out that I had been collecting mental images of gravel gardens for most of my life.

My obsession started early with the front yard of a woman who lived down the street from us in the West Texas town where I grew up. Contrary to all the keepers of trim lawns on our street, Mrs. Ramsey covered her yard in gravel and dotted it with agaves and prickly pears, twisted mesquite trees, and a sequence of seasonal flowers.

There’s something dramatic about the spare simplicity of plants poking up, seemingly at random, through a mulch of stone, and I remember being drawn to the otherworldly beauty of her plantings — so much so that I felt I had to possess some of that beauty. I snuck down early one spring morning to snip all her windflowers (anemones) and a fair portion of her larkspurs, which I hid in our doghouse.

I was quickly caught by my mom, who must’ve wondered what her creative (a.k.a. odd) son was doing in our beagle’s house. She forced me to return the limp stems, which I did tearfully, to Mrs. Ramsey, who I remember only as a shadowy figure in a doorway wearing cat-eye glasses over a grim mouth.

Ever since then, I always try to grow, with varying degrees of success, my own larkspurs and windflowers as a living garden memory.

In the 1990s, I read a book called Derek Jarman’s Garden about the late filmmaker’s seaside pebble garden on the south coast of England. This windswept, austere setting has inspired a generation of gardeners. Jarman used what I call gap-planting, which unlike what you might see in a packed perennial border, relies on the open spaces between the plants for visual effect, much like Mrs. Ramsey’s approach did. And his artful use of found objects has us using driftwood, larger stones, and remnants of silvered locust stumps in a simila way.

Jarman inspired my love of plants that relish being by the ocean. I’ve begun incorporating plant varieties with “maritima” as their species name. Sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima), the common annual I once noticed growing wild on the sandy sea bluffs around Malibu, may look delicate, but it blithefully withstands drought, heat, and wind here. Others include sea thrift (Armeria maritima), sea kale (Crambe maritima), and our own beach plum (Prunus maritima).

Though I plan to grow as many local natives as possible, plenty of other plants from a variety of habitats enjoy our lean Outer Cape conditions: poppies (especially California poppies), gaura, bearded iris, sea hollies, bellflowers, and even prairie natives like blazing star. I use silver foliage to knit all these disparate plants together visually, including catmint, santolina, and lavender.

One of my favorite “knitters” is dusty miller (Artemisia stelleriana). Our wild version is familiar to anyone who has seen it growing in the dunes, though it is native to East Asia and the Aleutian Islands. A single rooted cutting has turned into several plants that have grown into large, spreading groundcovers over two years. I treasure it as a visual link to the magic that lies just after the hill on the back shore, which is really what this garden is all about: a sense of place.

Long before we put down roots on the Cape, I bought two books by the French author Olivier Filippi, The Dry Gardening Handbook: Plants and Practices for a Changing Climate and Planting Design for Dry Gardens, in hopes that one day I’d have the chance to use them. Filippi, a dry gardening guru, has probably had more influence on me than anyone from a horticultural best-practices standpoint.

Because he’s an expert on gardening in a Mediterranean climate, which is not exactly Cape Cod’s, his ideas require some extrapolation. For example, his principle of discouraging irrigation in summer because the moisture rots woody herbs like lavender, santolina, and thyme may not be practical with our summer rains.

My main takeaway from Filippi has been, to borrow a British phrase, a “treat ’em mean and keep ’em keen” planting method. Choose plants that like sandy, infertile soil and a gravel top mulch. Dig a hole. Don’t add any imported soil or amendments, plop in your plant, and resist the urge to fertilize.

I’ve been trying this for the past three years with mostly robust results. Many of the aforementioned varieties as well as sedums, verbenas (both sand verbena and my beloved Verbena bonariensis), certain alpines, and showy tender perennials grown as annuals such as gazanias, arctotis, and blue convolvulus thrive. Others that I thought would be successful, like penstemons, lambs’ ears, geum, rosemary, and certain ornamental grasses, either dwindled under heat and sun or didn’t return after not liking their winter accommodations.

Gardening for me is more about the process and the knowledge I gain from experimentation than the perfect result. I’ll try anything. The space you see in these pictures is an edited slice; anyone who visits our garden will have to squint to avoid some major eyesores: the chain-link that will be carted off someday soon, the ever-present black locusts that seem to pop up overnight, and the weedy grasses that crept in over the gravel once the dogs weren’t running it bare.

Over time, our inherited gravel has become thinned out enough to let weeds take hold, so we plan to get a big delivery of new stones (experts recommend 3 to 5 inches) once we’ve hashed out a design. In the meantime, we spend a lot of time weeding while trimming back the catmints, lavenders, and santolina that have quintupled in size over three years.

Ever the dreamer, I don’t notice the blemishes too much, even though our gravel test plot, about 20 feet square, is surrounded by a larger space of encroaching weeds and locusts. I see it as a utopia, backlit by the soft light of an Outer Cape sunset that gilds each plant edge. I like to think Mrs. Ramsey would approve.
