Best place to grab a drink on the Cape? According to Boston Magazine, you’ll find it at Ocean Terrace—along with the #1 view to sip it by. Best of all, it’s open to the public, with fire pits, sunsets, and zero pretension (despite being attached to a mansion). Off-season? Slide into The Roscommon Room’s delectable fireside scene or have a pint at Bayzo’s Pub. This local secret is just too good to keep all to ourselves. We strive to support, strengthen and promote the economic feasibility, cultural richness, environmental sensitivity and social needs of Brewster. Ask about the benefits of membership.

In this year’s Best of Brewster magazine, we are bragging about the many activities and special events that take place in Brewster throughout the year! Our Calendar of Events will introduce you to some of the many activities taking place, and the companion page of business information that includes QR codes, will make it easy for you to learn more about what more those businesses are offering! Have fun planning what you will be doing! We’re also bringing you information about “recycling” recycling! Meg Morris, chairperson of Brewster’s newly named Waste Reduction and Recycling Commission presents a list of new “R’s” leading up to “recycling”. It’s interesting, and easy to consider adding to your routine! You’ll meet Sharon Tennstedt, our 2025 Person of the Year. She has a fascinating background and is a dedicated volunteer for many Cape Cod organizations including the Town of Brewster. Also meet the 2025 Small Business Excellence Award winner Brewster Book Store and learn how the store changed hands to Jessica Devin and Sue O’Malley in 2021. Finally, we have updated our map! You will notice a new water drop icon in several locations: this is where new water stations have been installed. So, when you are out and about, make sure you have your water bottle with you so you can fill up! Whether you are a year-round or part-time resident, or are here for vacation, Brewster has a lot to offer, and we invite you to take advantage of it all! Enjoy Brewster!

BREWSTER IN BLOOM 2026! The 40th Anniversary of Brewster in Bloom will be celebrated on May 1, 2 and 3, 2026! Join us for a full calendar of events to salute Spring on Cape Cod. How did this festival come about? In 1985, a group of Brewster business owners who were tired of the long, gloomy Cape Cod winters came up with a way to brighten up the town as spring arrived. They sold daffodil bulbs to the residents and businesses on Main Street knowing that the flowers would bloom in April blanketing Brewster is a sea of yellow! The first Brewster in Bloom festival weekend took place in April 1986. The highlight of that year was the town parade when everyone enthusiastically joined in. It was a cold, damp, gray day (typical April) and Brewster residents Susan Lindquist, then with the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, and Elliot Carr, CEO of Cape Cod Five, bundled up in winter coats, hats and gloves to serve as judges. These judges returned in 2016 for the 30th anniversary of the parade and the weather was just the same as it was in 1986!

Today, the parade draws 40-plus units (not counting the local emergency equipment that falls in at the end!) that march down Main Street for 1.5 miles to the delight of the crowds gathered along the way. The parade has only been canceled twice due to really bad weather, and then again during the COVID 19 pandemic when the Brewster Chamber held a lawn decorating event for businesses and residents instead. The focus of Brewster in Bloom is not just to have a spring festival that brings visitors and residents out of hibernation, but also to fundraise! In the first few years, results of fundraising were donated to building the band gazebo at Drummer Boy Park. Once that project was completed, the fundraising focus shifted to providing scholarships and tool-ships for Brewster students pursuing higher education, and that remains the focus today. Two students are awarded $2,000 each and one is awarded a tool-ship for $500. Brewster in Bloom Festival is managed by the Brewster Chamber of Commerce, Inc. ON THE WATER IN BREWSTER BOATING: With its bayside location and multitude of freshwa-ter ponds, Brewster is a lovely location from which to launch a watercraft. There are no boat ramps at any of Brewster’s saltwater beaches. For charter fishing boats, refer to the Chamber’s busi-ness directory; they are located at Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis, at Rock Harbor in Orleans, and Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port. Saltwater fishing licenses are now required unless you are on a chartered boat. There are boat ramps at Sheep’s Pond (3 HP motor), inside Nick-erson State Park (10 HP), and at Long Pond and Upper Mill Pond as well as car-top boat launch areas at Walkers, Slough and School House Pond. Kayak racks and moorings require a town permit. Jet skis are prohibited at all landings in Brewster. Beach parking permit enforcement is in effect June 15, 2025, through August 31, 2025 from 9am to 4pm daily. FISHING: Saltwater fishing in Brewster waters includes striped bass, bluefish, tautog, and flounder in the spring, summer and fall. Unless you are on a charter, you will need a saltwater fishing license.

SHELLFISHING: To protect Brewster’s fragile shoreline, the harvesting of shellfish in Brewster is highly regulated and limited. Quahogs and sea clams are available year-round from Brewster’s western beaches. In July and August, shell fishing for these clams is only allowed on Thursdays and Sundays at Saint’s Landing Beach, where the town clam beds are seeded. Look for the buoy that marks the location, a short walk onto the Brewster Flats. Check the regulations for shell fishing for scallops, oysters, and little necks in the off-season: complete regulations are available at www.brewster-ma.gov under the Natural Resource Department. Certain areas are closed to shell fishing, so please refer to the regulations. All shell fishing—whether by residents or visitors—requires a town permit. Visit the town’s website for information on how to purchase: www.brewster-ma.gov/beach-information Beach parking permit enforcement is in effect June 15, 2025, through August 31, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. BREWSTER BEACHES Brewster is world-renowned for its celebrated “Brewster Flats,” a phenomenon created by the ebb and flow of the daily tides when the waters recede more than a mile out of Cape Cod Bay to reveal sandbars, clam beds and tidal pools teeming with sea life. To experience this at least once a day, visit one of Brewster’s gorgeous bay side beaches. From east to west these are: Crosby Landing, Linnell Landing, First Light Beach (Brewster residents only), Ellis Landing, Point of Rocks Landing, Breakwater Beach, Saint’s Landing, Mant’s Landing and Paines Creek. (Beach names correspond to the name of the road they are on; the exceptions are Saint’s and Mant’s Landings.) None of Brewster’s bayside beaches are lifeguard protected. All bayside beaches have portable toilets, available from Memorial Day to early October. Special access is limited to Mants Landing and Linnell Landing beaches. Freshwater Ponds that have public beaches and landings include Long Pond (Crowell’s Bog Road off Rte. 124) where a lifeguard is on duty most days from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and from approximately mid-June to Labor Day; Sheep Pond (Fisherman’s Landing off Rte. 124), and Upper Mill Pond (Run Hill Road), both of which have no lifeguard. Portable toilets are available at each beach from Memorial Day to early October. Beach Parking Parking Permits are required for all vehicles at Brewster beaches and ponds from June 15 to August 31, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. No fees for walkers or bikers. All permits are on sale through the Town’s website: https:// BrewsterStickers.townhall247.com/. Daily and Seasonal Permits are fully electronic: plate reader technology is used for verification. The fine for parking without a permit is $40 per violation.

Please note: Beach Visitor Permits are only available beginning June 1 online only through https://BrewsterStickers.townhall247.com/ Questions? Call 508-896-3701 x1155

The tunes don’t stop when summer does. Bayzo’s Pub has live music Thursday through Sunday, all year long—and yes, it’s open to the public. And this is just one of the reasons we were named Diners’ Choice by OpenTable. With a pint poured like they know what they’re doing (because they do), elevated comfort food, and a drink list that overachieves, it’s the kind of place locals love. Now you’re in on it, too. 2025 Small Business Excellence Award Winner:

BREWSTER BOOK STORE By Kyle Hinkle, Brewster Chamber of Commerce, Inc.

In 2021, the Brewster Book Store entered a new era of growth when Jessica MacKenzie Devin and friend Sue O’Malley purchased the business. Under their management and creative influence, the store has flourished by expanding its footprint, adding a “secret garden”, creating new book clubs and programs, inviting authors to stay in the upstairs apartment, and continuing the original owner’s desire to be a community minded resource for readers of all ages and interests. The Brewster Book Store opened in 1982 by Nancy and John Landon who decided Brewster could use a children’s bookstore. Nancy and her husband, who lived off-Cape opened the store in one room with 3,000 titles. Their endeavor was a success and soon hired Jessica’s mother and aunt to run the store for them. In the summer, they liked to hire young people, including 13-year-old Jessica, to work in the store. Today, their inventory includes books (of course) but also a variety of gifts including logo branded t-shirts, sweatshirts and caps, jewelry, candy, gourmet tea, tote and book bags, and more! When asked what other new creative things they have planned, Jessica replied that she “listens to the community to learn what they would like to see!” What a great idea! For more information about the Brewster Book Store, visit www.BrewsterBookStore.com and be sure to drop in to wander the stacks when you are looking for a good read! STILL JUST RECYCLING? By Meg Morris, Chair of the Brewster Waste Reduction & Recycling Commission

It’s another year on the Cape and time for residents and visitors to try some new (old) ways to reduce waste.

Visit Brewster-CapeCod.com Business Directory to find what you need! Brewster Chamber of Commerce, Inc. PO Box 1241, Brewster 02631 508-896-3500 | info@Brewster-CapeCod.com

Now, of course we want you to continue recycling, but we also want you to consider these other R-words and actions that come well before the last R, i.e., Recycling, and certainly before disposal. Now more than ever due to the preponderance of plastic everything, we need to manage our unwanted materials a lot better. Better management of our resources is up to all of us. While you’re trying out some of these extra “R”s, think about how much plastic is in our lives and how we can Reduce it for a better world. Refuse to purchase products that are single-use, disposable or overpackaged. For example, replace paper napkins with washable cloth ones. The same goes for plasticware: refuse to buy it. We should all be using washable, and just-aboutforever reusable, glass drinking cups, not disposables. Keep in mind that there is a safety exception for young children and differently-abled consumers, but if you just start refusing when you can, there will be less plastic waste. Refill containers when offered the option. Consider buying in bulk and taking your own containers to the shop rather than using plastic bags. Worried about paying for the weight of the container? Simply ask the bulk food clerk to reduce your purchase weight by the weight of the container (it’s called a tare weight). Sounds complicated, but it’s not, and it’s worth the effort as it may even result in less food waste and will certainly result in less plastic waste. Reduce is similar to Refuse, except you’ll need to consider this at the time of purchase: first, whether you need it; second, whether there’s a similar product that’s not over packaged; and third, whether the packaging is recyclable in your community. Then either purchase or not. Less plastic waste.

32 Best of Brewster 2025-26

Reuse is a basic principle for those seeking to be environmentally correct. When you’ve outgrown your clothing in style or size, instead of buying new, consider shopping at local thrift shops. Many carry designer clothing, and you don’t have to tell people where you bought that gorgeous blouse. An even simpler example of reuse is to carry and use your own reusable bags when you shop. Less plastic. Repurpose is part of the upcycling movement. I’m sure at some point, you’ve Reused a plastic bottle for something, whether a bird feeder, toy, or just to store some other product. That’s repurposing. Painting an old hollow core door and using it for a desktop is a little more challenging, but sure better than just ditching the door.

Regift. Yes, that’s right, it’s okay to regift something you receive if it doesn’t fit or look right or just isn’t your style. Perhaps be tactful about who you give it to, though.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT EXCELLENCE FOR YOUR 2nd HOME

Repair should be right up at the front of this hierarchy as fixing things means that you don’t have to discard them. It can be something as simple as repairing clothing, a bicycle, or a radio. If you’re handy, it might extend to fixing the coffee maker that’s clogged (a vinegar bath is usually all it takes) instead of buying a new plastic one.

Rot happens when you have a backyard composting bin or at your local DPW convenience center for organic waste. Home composting, where you’re controlling what goes into the mixture, is simple, effective and produces a fantastic soil amendment that helps plants nutritionally and with moisture retention. No plastic is saved, but all those good nutrients are! Recycling should be last and if you’ve been diligent about all these other “R”s, you’ll soon see that your recycling is decreasing and/or limited to just packaging. And that’s okay if your waste is reduced too! Join the Brewster Waste Reduction & Recycling Commission in its campaign to not only reduce the amount of plastic in our lives but also waste less and recycle better.

BREWSTER HISTORIC SITES THE BREWSTER STORE The building, now known as the Brewster Store, was built in 1856 as a church, but with a steady decline in the congregation, the decision was made to sell the building and property. That was in 1866 and William Knowles made the purchase for $1. He already owned another general store in town – one the six such stores in the community. The Brewster Store has been run as a general store ever since with the current owners, George and Missy Boyd, buying it in 1986. Under the Boyd’s ownership the building has been renovated and the traditions that are the hallmark of the business have continued. You will step back in time when you enter this iconic general store!

CAPE COD’S SEA CAPTAINS’ HOMES Brewster earned the nick name “Cape Cod’s Sea Captains’ Town” for the 50-plus sea captains who called the town home in the 18th and 19th centuries. They constructed elegant mansions for their families’ comfort, and today many of them provide comfort for the visiting public.

The Historic Inns of Brewster are listed among the top 20 inns on Cape Cod and include Brewster by the Sea, Candleberry Inn, Captain Freeman Inn, Old Manse Inn and the Charm on Main. Each of these inns has a unique story, now owned and managed by innkeepers who are dedicated to preserving the elegant ambience, as well as history, of these homes. They are located along Route 6A, and several times a year, the innkeepers hold tours of the properties so the public can experience Brewster’s past.

CAPTAIN ELIJAH COBB HOUSE Located at 739 Lower Road, the Captain Elijah Cobb House is one of Brewster’s most significant buildings, constructed in 1799 on an old farm that stretched from Lower Road to Cape Cod Bay. The house stayed in the Cobb family until the death of Cobb’s great granddaughter Caro Dugan in 1941. The house was then purchased by Frances Chapin, who restored the home to its original configuration. In 2013, Ms. Chapin passed away and the house became empty. Then on February 17, 2015 the Brewster Historical Society purchased the house and began its restoration. Today, Brewster’s first sea captain’s home serves as the Brewster Historical Society’s museum and offices. Take a virtual tour of the museum by visiting www.BrewsterHistoricalSociety.com.

CROSBY MANSION: A STORY OF ROMANCE AND OPULENCE Crosby Mansion is preserved as a monument to an earlier time, owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and maintained by the non-profit group Friends of Crosby Mansion as a living history tribute to the past. Located off Main St. (Rte. 6A) on Crosby Lane in East Brewster, the elegant grounds are open to the public for walking all summer. The mansion is open with guided tours during docent-led open houses held in July and August – visit www.Brewster-CapeCod.com/events for dates. Albert Crosby was born in 1823 and raised in a modest Cape house in Brewster that still stands where the mansion is, as he had the mansion wrap around his old family homestead. Albert moved to Chicago and made his fortune producing distilled alcohol which he sold to the army during the Civil War. Sales of this non-taxed medicinal alcohol made him a wealthy man. Albert returned to the Cape with a bride twenty years his junior and spared no expense to build her the three story, thirty-five room home overlooking Cape Cod Bay. Completed in 1888, the home was named “Tawasentha” built in the grand style of Chicago’s Gold Coast Mansions. And because of its heightened construction, the Old Colony Railroad laid a side track to the site. The mansion was designed for the lavish entertaining his young wife, Matilda, loved. Legend has it that when her soirees became too much for him, Albert would slip away to the old homestead and sit peacefully in his favorite rocking chair. Visit www.CrosbyMansion.com or call 508-896-1744 for more information.

FIRST PARISH BREWSTER UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH Founded in 1700, this was originally a Puritan church. It was the law at that time that there be a church within five miles’ walking distance of the homes in any community

and the original building was the center of town. The current sanctuary is the third building on this site, built in 1834. In 2012, the Brewster Meeting House Preservation Project worked to marshal resources to make much needed repairs, including: lifting the building and setting it back down on an entirely new foundation, a new roof, new timbers, a new plaza, improved access for wheelchair users and others, and more. The Project continues to raise funds for the preservation of the building and to invite use of the Meeting House as a center for the arts and community gatherings in the wider Brewster area and beyond. Unitarianism was formalized as a denomination in 1825. First Parish was among many Puritan churches that leaned toward the new Unitarian ways of thinking and became a Unitarian church sometime in the mid-1800s. In 1961 Unitarians and Universalists consolidated into one, and this congregation thus became a Unitarian Universalist community. The polity—how decisions are made—is congregational: that is, the members of the church decide who their “called” ministers will be and who their Board of Trustees will be, and it is the membership of the church that supports the work of the church financially and with volunteer work in the office, in action groups and task forces, and on committees. The church is located at 1969 Main Street; call 508-896-5577.

STONY BROOK GRIST MILL: FIRST BUSINESS IN BREWSTER The intersection of Satucket & Stony Brook Roads is a favorite place for local residents as well as visitors. It is a location of great natural and historical interest, featuring a picturesque mill beside a sparkling stream. Footpaths on both sides of the road meander along the edge of Stony Brook. Informative signs provide details about the area’s rich history. The Grist Mill, beside Stony Brook, is a quiet reminder that this location was a busy 17th Century industrial area. If you close your eyes, you can imagine the Factory Village that was started here in 1633. The grist mill grinding corn, the fulling mill felting homemade wool fabric, the shoe and furniture factories hard at work providing goods for the residents of the area. A testimony to the entrepreneurial spirit of Brewster’s residents! The present Grist Mill was built in 1873 on the foundation of the old fulling and woolen mill. Water flowing over the water wheel creates power to grind corn between giant millstones. The Town of Brewster bought the mill and surrounding area in 1940. After recent years of refurbishments, the Mill is open grinding corn again and the museum features guided tours.

STONY BROOK HERRING RUN: A CAPE COD CLASSIC Adjacent to the Grist Mill, the Stony Brook Herring Run is Brewster’s harbinger of spring. Sometime in mid-April or as late as early May (depending on air and water temperatures), the news that “The herring are running!” spreads quickly through Brewster. Hordes of herring migrate up Stony Brook from the salt water of Cape Cod Bay to spawn in the pond waters of West Brewster. The Herring Run’s paths flanking the stream are a great place to observe the alewives’ awe-inspiring journey up the fish ladders. The Run is considered a Cape Cod classic.

WINDMILL VILLAGE AND BAND STAND AT DRUMMER BOY PARK: AMERICANA AT ITS BEST 773 Main Street, West Brewster is home to Brewster’s Drummer Boy Park with the Windmill Village, Bandstand and Playground. The site offers a spectacular view from Route 6A, across Quivet Creek to Cape Cod Bay. Two 18th century buildings of historical interest - Old Higgins Farm Windmill and the Harris Black House - are situated nearby. The old Blacksmith’s Shop (which is a working shop!) rounds out the Windmill Village. These are owned and maintained by the Brewster Historical Society and make a wonderful backdrop for photos! Visit the Brewster Historical Society website (www.BrewsterHistorical Society.org) for information about tours. On Sunday evenings at 6 pm in July and August bring a picnic and lawn blanket and enjoy the music of The Brewster Band. (And at the Drummer Boy Playground the little ones can work out their energy!) This all-volunteer band has been performing for over 20 years pleasing audiences both young and old. The Band is under the direction of John New who teaches music and band at Nathaniel H. Wixon Innovation School in South Dennis. Band members say, “John is a highly skilled professional who delights the Band’s members as he coaches and challenges them to new levels of performance.” They are always looking for musicians who would like to join! 2025 Person of the Year

SHARON TENNSTEDT By Mackensie Blue, Cape Cod Chronicle

Sharon Tennstedt is a name many Brewster residents are familiar with. She’s served on the vision planning committee, crafting Brewster’s 10-year master plan, has been a co-chair on the council on aging’s board for nine years, was the president of the Brewster garden club, participated in the bay property planning committee, and currently serves as the COA’s liaison to the Sea Camps advisory committee. Outside of the Brewster boundaries, she was the president of the board of directors for Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands. She also is currently involved in the leadership group for Healthy Aging Cape Cod and volunteers regularly with WE CAN. She’s made an incredible impact on the Cape Cod community, which is why Kyle Hinkle, executive director of the Brewster Chamber of Commerce, and the rest of the chamber board named her their 2025 Person of the Year. The honor is bestowed upon a local resident who exemplifies true community service. Receiving the news of her person of the year honor came as a complete surprise. “First, I was stunned,” she said with a laugh. “Once I got past the initial surprise, it’s a great personal honor to me. To have what I’ve been able to do, to have that work be recognized publicly is just an incredible honor.” Tennstedt will lead the Brewster in Bloom parade this Sunday, May 4. Now in its 39th year, the event has blossomed into a two-day extravaganza, starting with the annual Brewster Band concert on May 2 at the Brewster Baptist Church beginning at 7 p.m. On Saturday, May 3, the Cape Cod 5 Bloom run is set to take place at 10 a.m. Registered runners will meet at the Brewster Inn and Woodshed. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at the inn parking lot. The parade will take place on Sunday, May 4. Residents are encouraged to set up along Route 6A, as the start of the parade forms at Eddy Elementary School. Tennstedt will be in attendance. Throughout Saturday and Sunday, the annual arts and crafts fair will be open to the public for free. Located at the Sea Camps bay property, the fair features more than 86 makers and artists showcasing their work. On Saturday, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on Sunday, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An Active Brewster Volunteer Tennstedt’s love of service started early in her career. Her background is in clinical mental health work, but in the 1970s she registered in a Ph.D. program at Boston University majoring in medical sociology with a minor in social gerontology. After completing clinical work, she focused on research, specifically in the field of aging. Over the next 40 years, her research spanned surveys and observational studies to multi-center national clinical trials. Tennstedt and her husband bought a home in Brewster in 2004 and became fulltime residents in 2014 after they retired. Once ingrained in the community, she sought out opportunities for volunteer positions that fit her background. “Every volunteer opportunity that I have taken on has been one that’s allowed me to use my professional skills and experience,” she said, noting that the garden club is a personal interest. Her lifelong interest in gardening drew her to the garden club in 2018. After her retirement, she looked for the opportunity to join a club focused on the hobby. Although it had been a passion of hers, she wasn’t able to devote much time to it throughout her career. While she was president of the board, the garden club decided to join the chamber as a member, increasing its visibility around town. Aside from following her passions, she’s been an impactful advocate for senior living in Brewster and Cape Cod as a whole. She was instrumental in crafting the five-year action plan for the council on aging that helped secure a full-time program coordinator position. Currently, she’s working with the Barnstable County initiative Healthy Aging Cape Cod to build out the volunteer database that was originally established by the United Way about 10 years ago. Since establishing herself as a Brewster resident, Tennstedt has been a consistent participant in the Brewster in Bloom festival. She has walked in the parade with the garden club and been a viewer on the sidelines cheering as floats pass. What does Brewster in Bloom mean to Tennstedt? “It is our celebration of community.” This article originally appeared in the May1, 2025 issue of the Cape Cod Chronicle and is reprinting with permission from Mackensie Blue and the Chronicle.
