This year, our magazine shines a spotlight on the heart of Orleans: our diverse and ever-growing year-round business community. From iconic restaurants to treasure-filled thrift stores, our members form the backbone of a vibrant local economy that thrives in every season.

To our visitors—welcome! Whether discovering Orleans for the first time or returning to a favorite tradition, we invite you to explore the beauty of Nauset and Skaket beaches and catch an unforgettable sunset at Rock Harbor. Watch the Rock Harbor fleet head out or return with the day’s fresh catch—a daily reminder of our deep connection to the sea. The harbor has had a busy off-season, with exciting renovations set to wrap up just in time for summer 2025, ready to welcome old salts and new friends alike.

Our events calendar continues to grow, offering something for everyone in every season. In May, the Cherry Blossom Market in the Park kicks off the season with local makers and spring cheer.

From June through August, the Boards in the Stores Gallery and Auction at 44 Main Street showcases community creativity while supporting small businesses and local artists. Also from June through September, First Fridays light up downtown Orleans with evenings of art, music, shopping, and community spirit.

Outermost Weekend brings family-friendly events and fall fun over Columbus Day Weekend in October. The year wraps up with our beloved ‘Tis the Season Weekend Stroll, starting the day after Thanksgiving with the Annual Orleans Improvement Association Tree Lighting at Depot Square.

The weekend continues with Breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus and Shop Small in Orleans, a town-wide celebration of our local businesses kicking off on Small Business Saturday. Then, lace up for the festive Santa Stampede 5K on scenic Beach Road, the first Saturday in December, a spirited run for all ages that caps off the holiday season.

As a kid, Courtney spent many summer days on the Outer Beach with her family and friends. It immediately became a sacred spot for her. Now, she shares it with her kids and her husband (who also spent his summer days out there). “Riding over the dunes and getting that first view of the water is like no other feeling,” said Courtney Courtney lives in Harwich and works for The Cape Cod Chronicle. She owned and operated Tidal Marketing in Orleans for almost 6 years. She also served a term on the Orleans Chamber of Commerce. The gallery is filled with pottery, paintings, jewelry, clothing, home decor and even greeting cards. The day I was there, Parent talked about the Wellfleet Clock Co and the man behind it, Jeff Pozgay. “Jeff is from Wellfleet, and is not only a talented clockmaker but a furniture maker, and has been for 30 years. He made all the jewelry cases you see and even our counter where you check out your purchases.” She also mentioned Steve Patzman’s woodturning. Patzman, a former president of the Cape Cod Woodturner’s Club, made ornaments for friends that he has now turned into “delicate hollowed pieces of beauty.” The Left Bank Gallery is another Orleans business where you could

By Elizabeth Ednie The brainchild of Justin Alex, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Orleans Chamber of Commerce, "Boards in the Stores” is an annual celebration that combines local art with surf culture. This year, all creations by local artists will be displayed in a central gallery at the Old Firehouse, located next to the Chamber office in downtown Orleans.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view the surfboards and can take home a piece of art by participating in an online auction.

"Boards in the Stores" began in 2023 and is now in its third year. The auction benefits both local artists and the Orleans Chamber of Commerce, with proceeds being split between the artists and the Chamber to support future events and promote the town. The inspiration for this event comes from similar art initiatives around the country, such as Ocean City, New Jersey's "Art of Surfing," Yarmouth's sandcastle exhibitions, and Chatham's "Art in the Park." As a lifelong surfer with a passion for local art and Orleans' surf culture, Alex found it fitting to merge art with surfboards.

Businesses interested in participating can connect with local artists to design their own surfboards, and the Chamber can provide a list of artist recommendations if needed. Many business owners also create their own surfboard art, showcasing the diverse talent and creativity present in Orleans.

This year's event will run from June 1 to August 20, culminating in the popular Orleans Police Department Annual Summer Block Party. Residents and visitors can view the surfboards in the gallery at 44 Main Street throughout this period, but the bidding will close when the block party ends. Outermost Market in the Park - Orleans’ Newest Signature Event

By Elizabeth Ednie Outermost Market in the Park is a dynamic artisan market and music event held in downtown Orleans, organized by WOMR, Cape Cod's Outermost Community Radio station, in collaboration with the Orleans Chamber of Commerce.

This lively celebration will take place on October 10, 2025, at Orleans Village Green, next to Snow’s Library, and showcase live music, local artisan vendors, delicious food, and craft beer and wine.

After the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Chamber has announced a similar spring market, Cherry Blossom Market in the Park, which will be held on May 10, 2025. This will create a second opportunity for community connection and celebration.

This event mirrors the Outermost Market in the Park event, bringing the community together with local artisans, makers, businesses, and nonprofits. The Cherry Blossom Market in the Park is a great way to create a wonderful energy in Orleans on the Saturday of Mother’s Day Weekend.

Outermost Market in the Park features talented local artists, designers, and local nonprofits. Highlights include live performances, with past acts such as Nikki and the Barn Boys and DJ Matty Dread from WOMR, alongside fantastic food trucks and unique crafts. The energetic and friendly atmosphere has been a favorite among attendees, offering an opportunity to support local businesses while enjoying the festival spirit.

Admission is free, with a suggested $5 donation benefiting the Orleans Chamber Foundation, which supports local businesses, scholarships for high school seniors pursuing blue economy careers, and community initiatives. Throughout December, the town of Orleans bursts with activity, hosting events and celebrations that capture the enchantment of the holiday season in this small seaside town.

Friday, November 28, 2025: kicks off the first event of the season, hosted by the Orleans Improvement Association: the Annual Tree Lighting. This festive evening will coincide with the annual shopping stroll, inviting participants to enjoy local businesses while soaking in holiday cheer. The tree lighting will take place at Depot Square on Old Colony Way. Saturday, November 29: Celebrate Small Business Saturday with Santa and Mrs. Claus! Watch Santa arrive by boat at Town Cove and have breakfast with him and Mrs. Claus at the Orleans Yacht Club.

Saturday, December 6: Run in the Santa Stampede 5K! This professionally timed race begins and ends at Barley Neck and goes down to Nauset Beach. Friends’ Marketplace will provide pre-race treats. hrifting has been a constant since the late 17th century. It started as a necessity for sharing goods but became a mainstream shopping source in the 1930s.

Decades of trends have found a way to make thrifting fit the genre. From the hippie counterculture to grunge, second-hand goods have always been an important commodity.

Today, sustainability, individualism, and the rapid growth of social media have made the activity a more attractive alternative to mall shopping and fast fashion websites. Add in a unique location like Cape Cod and the pieces become even more special.

Orleans sits at the center of thrift magic. With an array of locally-owned consignment, antique and thrift shops, the marketplace is a bustling hub of one-of-akind items when it comes to second-hand clothes, vintage goods and art.

Take a stroll down Main Street, and you’ll find three highly-recommended thrift and antique spots: Nauset Vintage, Sandbar Denim and Hidden Gem. “There is definitely a resurgence of second-hand clothing because people are appreciating the value in quality,” said Michele Keeney, the owner and curator of Sandbar Denim. “There’s less inventory out there now, but it’s exciting that people are totally digging it.”

Coast, stopping frequently in New York and Florida to find more pieces. She’s had a brick-and-mortar spot in Orleans for a little over two years now and has found a good-sized community of regulars. Like most thrift shops in the area, she stays open in the off-season as well.

Anne Kiefer has a steady stream of about 75 consigners for her shop, Hidden Gem. A local establishment that lives up to the name, Hidden Gem is a year-round consignment shop that sources seasonal pieces. If you’re visiting Cape Cod during a holiday, you’ll likely find a table of themed items, as well as work from local artists.

Kiefer says the local connections she has developed have made the shop what it is today.

Nauset Vintage is tucked further back, but worth the hunt. Nauset Vintage is a mid-century modern dream with furniture, art, records and curated clothing. While it’s not exactly a budget-friendly option, the collection screams statement pieces.

If you take a quick pitstop down Cove Road, you’ll stumble upon Local Colour Resale Boutique. The women’s clothing and accessory hotspot carries everything you could imagine, from prom dresses to purses to shoes, with a style described anywhere from funky to elegant. “I had to learn creative financing out of necessity,” she said. “In this day and age, people are looking to cut costs wherever they can. Not only does resale afford customers the chance to buy clothing at a fraction of the original retail cost, but it also gives them an opportunity to consign gently worn clothing and earn some money.”

RippedIt Vintage is tucked away off South Orleans Road and was first established in 2020. While owner Jessica How-

arth said a large portion of her sales are online, the brickand-mortar spot started as a pop-up in the area. Her curation is full of second-hand gems and funky stuff that follows suit with topical trends. Aside from distinctive clothing, she fills the place with fun accessories and unique art.

One last stop down Canal Street will bring you to St. Joan of Arc Church Thrift Shop, an organization run by about 100 volunteers. This thrifting experience is more traditional in the sense that the items aren’t curated. It’s run on 2025-2026 | Truly Orleans 27

donations and financial support.

The shop also donates weekly to the Salvation Army, Katy’s Corner, Cape Cod Foster Closet, and the Brewster Animal Rescue League.

Orleans has something for everyone when it comes to the thrift offerings. Each shop has crafted it’s own style and collection, which spans generations. From locals looking all year-round to families visiting for the summer to grandparents coming back from their winter homes, the marketplace presents a robust shopping experience. While thrifting may no longer be just for Grandma, it certainly extends to her needs too. n a world where fast fashion and disposable goods dominate the consumer market, thrifting is a powerful statement of sustainability, creativity, and individuality. he Orleans Firebirds are a storied collegiate summer baseball team based in Orleans, Massachusetts, competing in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s East Division.

Established in 1928, the team has been a fixture of Cape Cod’s rich baseball tradition, with home games played at Eldredge Park—the oldest ballpark in the CCBL, dating back to 1913.

Under the leadership of long-serving field manager Kelly Nicholson, the Firebirds continue to be a prominent force in the CCBL, blending tradition with the excitement of showcasing future baseball stars.

Tennis enthusiasts in Orleans, can enjoy beautifully maintained courts, offering a perfect spot for casual play, competitive matches and clinics regularly hosted by Orleans’ Recreation Department.

Pickleball Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, offering fun and exercise for players of all ages. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, it’s the perfect way to stay active and social in a vibrant community setting.

Pickleball Courts can be found at 77 Eldredge Park Way and are managed by the Recreation Department.

Year-Round, courts are reserved from 8am – 11am for Orleans Recreation Pickleball Round Robin. No reservation or fee is required to utilize the courts during open play hours.

Finch Skatepark Finch Skatepark, located at 77 Eldredge Park Way, offers a variety of features, including ramps, rails, and bowls, making it a popular spot for skateboarders of all skill levels.

Playground Littles of all ages will love this playground, located directly across from the Police Station at 80 Eldredge Park Way and overlooking the baseball field, home to the Orleans Firebirds.

WHERE TO RIDE The Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) is a safe and enjoyable way to spend a Cape Cod day. Traveling through the towns of Yarmouth, Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet, its smoothly paved surface (akin to gravel asphalt) makes the path ideal for cyclists, walkers, inline skaters and runners. Bike rentals are also available at various bike shops conveniently located directly on the trail in Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster, Orleans and Wellfleet.

In Orleans, cyclists can park at Depot Square, 17 Old Colony Way, and hop on the CCRT towards either Brewster or Wellfleet.

Three Ponds Conservation Area Acres: 125+ Total Trail Length: 2 miles Parking: 135 Quanset Road & 174 Quanset Road, South Orleans Conservation History and Importance: For more than thirty years, one of the primary land protection focus areas for OCT has been the southeastern corner of Town between Twinings Pond and Pleasant Bay. OCT’s involvement in this part of town began in 1974 with the donation of almost sixty acres of land for conservation purposes, still the single largest gift of land to OCT. OCT has maintained an active and productive relationship with the area’s landowners and their families, which has resulted in more land being preserved in the vicinity.

Kent’s Point Acres: 27.7 Total Trail Length: 1.5 miles Parking: Town Parking lot at the end of Frost Fish Lane, Orleans Conservation History and Importance: The Town acquired the Kent’s Point Conservation Area in 1988 after years of planning to preserve the property. The property was subject to a life-estate retained by the seller, Miss Charlotte Kent, who lived to be 100 years old. Her house was removed from the site after her death in 1997. Public access to the Kent’s Point Conservation Area from Monument Road is via the unpaved Frost Fish Lane.

WALKING TRAILS & CONSERVATION

Conservation History and Importance: This parcel was purchased by the Town in 2011. In 2012 the Town, OCT, AmeriCorps Cape Cod and community volunteers worked to rehabilitate and restore the ecological integrity of the site, which was formerly used for farming. This was important because the Historical Commission identified the parcel to be “significant to the history of the Town of Orleans”. Today the parcel is being maintained as an early succession field habitat.

Woods Cove Conservation Area Acres: 12 Total Trail Length: Less than a mile Parking: 366 Tonset Road, Orleans Conservation History and Importance: In 1988, the Orleans Conservation Trust acquired the Woods Cove Conservation Area. The Woods Cove parcel consists of 11.6 acres of upland forest, wetland, and salt-marsh ecosystems. The property is extremely important for wildlife habitat, wildlife corridors, coastal resources, and scenic value. Due to the variety of habitats within this area, plants and animals can migrate through this area. The most important feature of Woods Cove, however, is the presence of vernal pools, which are ideal breeding grounds for many amphibian species.

Mill Pond Conservation Area Acres: 13 Total Trail Length: 1 mile Parking: 13 Champlain Road, Orleans Conservation History and Importance: Orin Tovrov, one of the original founders and first President of the Orleans Conservation Trust, placed a Conservation Restriction over the land in 1975, one of the first of its kind for OCT. After his passing, Orin’s children subsequently donated the land outright to the Trust in 1996. The preserve is made up of 13 acres with a 1-mile trail stretching from Champlain Road to the shores of Mill Pond.

Just a few of the unique features found on site are the historic stone walls, a vernal pool, and a coastal plain pond that is a hot spot for observing migrating waterfowl, including Wood Ducks.

Ice House and Reuben’s Pond Conservation Area Acres: 25+ Total Trail Length: 1.5 miles Parking: 245 Tonset Road & 64 Captain Curtis Road, Orleans Conservation History and Importance: In 1992 Charles F. Moore Sr. began buying land between Tonset Road and Hopkins Lane, eventually owning 27 acres with significant frontage on Ice House Pond. In 1973, just three years after the Trust was founded, the Moore family donated the first of three parcels of land totaling 17 acres. During that same time the Wilber and Hopkins family donated an additional 7 acres, amassing a total of 24 acres

of conservation land to be preserved for all time.

Today the 1.5 mile long trail winds through Pine and Oak woodlands with access to both Ice House and Reuben’s Pond. Ice House is recognized as one of the cleanest ponds in Town and is a hot spot for ice skating in the winter. Trail parking can be found on Tonset and Captain Curtis Roads.

White’s Lane Conservation Area Acres: 12 Total Trail Length: Less than a mile Parking: 33 White’s Lane, Orleans (off Monument Rd. & Henson Rd.) Conservation History and Importance: The White’s Lane Conservation area is made up of four separate gifts of land, stretching from 19821996. The largest single gift was donated in 1989 by George and Louise White. This gift contained more than 8 acres of land and 1,000 feet of frontage on The River. In 2009 OCT received a $100,000 State grant to restore the property to a field habitat, while also creating nesting gardens for the Threatened Diamond-backed Terrapins. The restoration project was a success and in 2014 nearly 60 Terrapin hatchlings were documented being born on the site. Volunteers have also recorded numerous hawk species, box turtles, and song birds.

Peck Conservation Area Acres: 10 Total Trail Length: less than a mile Parking: 20 Peck’s Way (off Arey’s Lane), Orleans Conservation History and Importance: The Marion Hadley and Samuel Watson Peck Conservation Area consisted of two large residential lots purchased in 2006 by the Town of Orleans to preserve all of the high hill overlooking the entrance to Areys Pond, an active small-craft boatyard and mooring area. The 8.2-acre property fringing the hill falls within a state- designated Area of Critical Environmental Concern and has been known to attract otters. The last Indian meetinghouse in Orleans was cited on the slopes of this hill.

Christian Property Conservation Area Acres: 16 Total Trail Length: less than a mile Parking: 80 Portanimicut Road, South Orleans Conservation History and Importance: The Town of Orleans acquired the 7.85 acre Christian Conservation Area in 1999 for environmental preservation. In 2000, the Town acquired, by tax-taking, the abutting 8.9 acre white cedar swamp to provide a wildlife corridor and additional natural habitat. This parcel also abuts the Orleans Conservation Trust’s 4-acre Seikel Gift, which was given to the OCT in 1991 for conservation. The Christian Property was a priority acquisition for its close proximity to Pleasant Bay and its unique Atlantic White Cedar Swamp located within the property.

Kendrick Woods Conservation Area Acres: 46 Total Trail Length: 1 mile Parking: 35 Namequoit Road, Orleans Conservation History and Importance: Between 2002 and 2007, the Town of Orleans acquired three contiguous parcels totaling 46 acres of woodland between John Kenrick Road, Route 28, and Namequoit Road for conservation and recreation purposes. These parcels are collectively known as the John Kenrick Woods Conservation Area. This conservation area is an integral part of an extensive greenbelt on the lower Cape covering over 600 acres. It is part of the watershed contributing to Areys Pond, which connects to Pleasant Bay. The original South Orleans General Store was located on the Kenrick farmstead. This parcel is best described as a White Pine-Oak Forest with a dominance of white pine. The tall, straight lumber from Kenrick Woods was coveted for flagpoles as well as spars and planks for sailing vessels of the 1800s. Interestingly, more than 75 American chestnuts can also be found on site. According to the American Chestnut Foundation, this is the only location in the state where chestnuts are reproducing.

in Brewster across Route 6 to the watershed in Orleans. Bakers Pond is a classic coastal plain kettle pond with a wide sandy shoreline, which is inundated seasonally when the water table is high. This wide beach supports a substantial and unique plant community including the rare Spatulate-leaved sun-dew and Plymouth gentian.

Meadow Bog Conservation Area Acres: 11 Total Trail Length: less than a mile Parking: 174 Quanset Road, South Orleans Conservation History and Importance: The Meadow Bog Pond Conservation Area in South Orleans comprises two acquisitions: a 1993 gift by Rachia Heyelman of 1.8 acres and a joint purchase of 6.6 acres in 2006 by OCT and the Town of Orleans, using Community Preservation Act funds. This land serves as a crucial wildlife corridor, linking 115 acres of protected land while simultaneously protecting the shores and water quality of two freshwater ponds: Sarah’s and Meadow Bog Ponds. It is valuable habitat for rare plants and animals, such as the sharp-shinned hawk, Eastern box turtle, and pink lady’s slipper. This trail is just under 1-mile in length and contains a number of steep hills.

Twinings Pond Conservation Area Acres: 31 Total Trail Length: 1 mile Parking: 135 Quanset Road, South Orleans Conservation History and Importance: In 1993 and 1994, Peter and Ruth Fleck generously gifted two parcels of land totaling 23 acres north and east of Twinings Pond in South Orleans. When Peter and Ruth passed away, the three Fleck daughters inherited the remaining family land (6 acres) south of Twinings Pond. Knowing they never wanted to see this land developed, between 2009 and 2013 the sisters worked with OCT and the Town to sell or place Conservation Restrictions on the last remaining, highly developable lots on Twinings Pond for well below fair market value. Twinings Pond has excellent water quality, and otters have occasionally been spotted swimming along its banks.When walking the 1-mile trail visitors will traverse rolling hills containing a few steep sections.

Bakers Pond Acres: 35+ (Between Orleans and Brewster) Total Trail Length: Varies depending on loop – up to 3 miles Parking: 80 Baker’s Pond Road, Orleans Conservation History and Importance: The Town of Orleans acquired several parcels, formerly part of the Corrigan property, in 1988 for conservation, open space, and recreation purposes. The property comprises two parcels totaling an area of 16.5 acres with Bakers Pond to the north.

Paw Wah Point Acres: 12 Total Trail Length: less than a mile Parking: 163 Namequoit Road, South Orleans Conservation History and Importance: The Town of Orleans bought the property, referred to as the Paw Wah Pond Conservation Area in 1987 to prevent a 7-lot subdivision being developed as an investment by the Environmental Minister of the Sultanate of Oman! The property comprises a 9.3-acre parcel of upland and beach on Little Pleasant Bay and a 2.3-acre salt marsh on Paw Wah Pond, which is an 8-acre salt pond. The upland part of this property features a mixed forest community of pitch pine, white pine, and black and white oak, while the marshland is dominated by a variety of Spartina grasses. Both of these ecosystems play important roles in the maintenance of habitat diversity, and when combined they provide habitat for the recovering osprey and Spartina borer.

WAYS TO THE WATER Beaches Orleans offers a diverse array of beaches that cater to all types of beachgoers—from families seeking calm waters to surfers chasing waves. Located on Cape Cod, Orleans boasts both Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay shorelines, providing a variety of beach experiences.

Nauset Beach Stretching approximately six miles along the eastern edge of Orleans, Nauset Beach is one of the Cape’s most iconic beaches. Its wide sandy shores and powerful surf make it a favorite among surfers and swimmers. The beach is equipped with restrooms, showers, a snack bar, and off-road vehicle access (with a permit). It’s also a prime spot for sunrise views. Note that beach fires are prohibited.

Skaket Beach On the calmer Cape Cod Bay side, Skaket Beach is renowned for its warm, shallow waters and expansive tidal flats. At low tide, visitors can walk out over a mile, exploring tidal pools teeming with marine life. It’s an ideal spot for families with young children. Skaket Beach also offers some of the best sunsets on the Cape, with the sun setting directly over the bay. Amenities include restrooms, a snack bar, and lifeguards during peak season.

Parking is available, but it’s recommended to arrive early as the lot fills up quickly.

Rock Harbor While not a traditional beach, Rock Harbor is a picturesque spot in Orleans. The area features a small strip of sand and expansive tidal flats, perfect for walking and exploring. It’s also a working harbor, offering opportunities to watch fishing boats and enjoy fresh seafood from nearby vendors. The sunsets here are spectacular, making it a popular evening destination. Parking is free, and there are portable restrooms available.

Local’s Secret: Go on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and listen to the sounds of a local steel drum band as the sun sets behind the bay.

Crystal Lake & Pilgrim Lake For freshwater experiences, Orleans offers Crystal Lake and Pilgrim Lake. Crystal Lake is a clear, calm pond ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Pilgrim Lake offers similar activities in a quieter setting.

Both lakes are family-friendly and provide a peaceful alternative to the ocean beaches.

Whether you’re looking to surf the Atlantic waves, explore tidal flats, or enjoy a peaceful freshwater swim, Orleans’ beaches offer a diverse and enjoyable coastal experience.

Town Landings Please note that no boat launching permit is required to use town landings. However, there are currently several town landings/parking areas that are restricted to resident-only parking from June 15 through September 15 annually. You must be a resident and have a current resident beach parking sticker affixed to your vehicle to be eligible to park in these areas. These parking areas are labeled with signage and patrolled daily by Parking Enforcement officers.

The are: Cove Road Landing, Doane Road Landing and 26 Doane Road, 141 Portanimicut Road, Mill Pond Landing, Priscilla Landing, River Road Landing, Snow Shore Landing, Tonset Landing, and 17 Wildflower Lane.

Our Four-legged Friends Dogs are not permitted on Nauset Beach from April 1st until Labor Day or on Skaket Beach from May 6 through Labor Day. This includes parking lots for both beaches.

The Town of Orleans requires stickers for accessing town beaches, the transfer station, and over-sand vehicles (OSVs). These stickers, which are vehicle-specific, non-refundable, and non-transferable, can be purchased online or in person at the DPW & Natural Resources building (40 Giddiah Hill Road).

2025 Parking Dates and Fees All stickers and daily parking passes are vehicle-specific, non-refundable and non-transferable. Please note that purchasing a weekly or non-resident season sticker does not grant you access to the parking lot when the parking lot is full.

Bicycles: No fee - must leave bike at entry bike racks.

Pedestrian Drop off: No fee - designated areas at entry gates.

Orleans offers its visitors and residents a wonderful opportunity to experience New England culture at its best. From steamers to quahogs to blue mussels, the shellfish in Orleans are some of the finest in the world, and the experience of harvesting these tasty treats will create memories that will last a lifetime!

Some tips and tricks: ■ Family Shellfish permits are available for purchase on Orleans’ Online Sticker Portal.

■ Always review shellfish regulations, open/ closed areas with a map, and local tides/weather conditions. All this information is available on the Town of Orleans website under Shellfish/Harbormaster.

■ Keep your shellfish permit with you. A sealable plastic bag will keep it dry.

■ Carry your shellfish gauge with you. Most folks tie them to their clam baskets.

■ Leave the shovels at home. You can only dig with rakes or your hands.

■ Re-bury any undersized shellfish. Let them grow to be enjoyed another day.

■ Don’t forget bug spray! No see-ums and greenhead flies love the tidal flats.

■ Wear boots or old sneakers to prevent cuts from broken shells.

Please remember to carefully review the Shellfish Regulations and open/closed areas (available on the website) before you go out shellfishing, and feel free to call the Harbormaster/ Shellfish Department at 508-240-3755 should you have any questions or wish to report a violation.

ining out in Orleans provides a perfect blend of local flavors, a relaxed coastal ambiance, and the hospitality that Cape Cod is famous for; however, sometimes you just want to stay in. These chefs and a bartender from Orleans restaurants kindly shared some recipes with us. Keep in mind that a clever chef often withholds an ingredient so that when you recreate their dish at home, it doesn’t taste quite as good as it does in their restaurant. Enjoy!

ar manager Bryanne Remington creates creative cocktails at La Bella Vita, 2 Academy Place. The restaurant serves “Italian-inspired dishes and locally sourced seafood” in a beautiful setting with yearround patio seating.

“We serve great cocktails,” said Remington. “We have at least 20 specialty cocktails on our menu, and they change with the season.”

Dancing Spoons Food Truck Blood Orange Margarita

(served in a pint glass) Ingredients: 2 parts Mi Campo Tequila .75 part rosemary simple syrup 1. Small squeeze of blood orange puree 2. Healthy splash of our house sour and lime 3. Shake, strain and pour in a pint glass filled with ice.

4. Garnish with orange slice and rosemary sprig

Abroad Global Cuisine Abroad Tzatziki Ingredients:

1 qt. Greek yogurt 1 English cucumber- diced fine 1 bunch fresh dill - chopped ½ cup lemon juice 8 cloves of garlic - grated fine 1 tsp. Coriander (ground) Salt & pepper to taste The zest of 1 lemon

Recipe:

1. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl, mix well.

2. Garnish with a pour of extra virgin olive oil, freshly chopped parsley and ground sumac.

3. Serve with warm pita bread.

4. Note: sumac is a member of the cashew family for those with tree nut allergies. .

broad Global Cuisine, 89 Old Colony Way is the brainchild of Chef/owner Michael Banghart and owner Molly Kasakoff. Their specialty is small plates or tapas “to share” and in the off-season a selection of “Home Comfort Dishes.”

Their name Global Cuisine is not a false one; you’ll find samplings from Japan, Greece, Hawaii, India, Jamaica, China, Mexico and Vietnam.

hef/owner Lisa Whelan parks her food truck “Dancing Spoons” in downtown Orleans at 116 Rte 6A (near the Red Balloon) almost every day from December to May, weather permitting and in the summer when she’s not booked for a private event. Both the food truck and her soon-tobe mobile bar-and-pour “Dream Chaser” trailer are available for private parties and get-togethers. “The Dream Chaser with a bartender for hire and the food truck are both available for booking in spring 2025.” She’s known for her homestyle recipes and locally sourced ingredients.

DancingSpoonsagogo.com She shared her delicious “Big Citrus Vinaigrette” with me. She pours this unique dressing over her Pink Grapefruit Avocado salad.

Big Citrus Vinaigrette (Serves 4 - 6) You will need a jar with a tight lid and a sharp knife.

Ingredients:

One large Orange One Pink Grapefruit One Lemon 2 Tbsp Honey 6 Fresh Mint leaves ½ Cup Red Wine Vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar.

(Personal Choice) 1 cup Olive Oil Salt and Pepper to taste

Recipe:

1. In a blender, combine the juices of the Orange, Pink Grapefruit and Lemon, honey, mint leaves and your vinegar of choice.

2. Transfer to the Jar with the Lid. 3. Add the Olive Oil into the Jar. Do NOT add Olive Oil to the blender. This will change the consistency of the dressing. Shake it up and serve.

4. This dressing goes very well with butter lettuce, avocado and cucumber.

Lost Dog Pub

ric Fein, chef at The Lost Dog Pub, 63 Route 6A, describes their menu as “American cuisine with Italian, French and even Aisian highlights. Our pub-style menu offers upscale dining at affordable prices,” he said. With over 24 years at the Daniel Webster Inn before he came to the Lost Dog, Fein loves what he has created at the Orleans pub. You’ll find a nice variety on their menu here and the daily specials could include Clam Chowder, Pizza, Uncle Pete’s Chicken Pie to Roast Duckling.

Seafood Alfredo with French Brie The sauce: 2 cups leeks, white and light-green parts only, washed well and sliced into ½ inch rounds 2 garlic cloves, minced or pressed 4 oz. unsalted butter ½ cup dry white vermouth 2 cups heavy cream 8 oz. Brie cheese 1 cup vegetable broth 2 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh chives

1. Simmer the leeks in the wine until the leeks are very tender, about 4 minutes 2. Add the cream and brie, then return to a simmer for 5 minutes 3. Add the vegetable broth, and simmer for about 20 minutes until slightly thickened 4. Season with salt and pepper

The seafood: 2 oz. lobster meat 3 oz. peeled and deveined shrimp 3 oz. scallops ¼ cup of leek rounds ⅛ cup dry vermouth Baby spinach

1. Saute the shrimp and scallops on 1 oz of butter 2. Add lobster, leeks and vermouth, reduce 3. Add 1 cup brie sauce and a handful of baby spinach 4. Toss with 1 ½ cups of your favorite pasta, cooked al dente 5. Served with garlic bread…Enjoy!

This sauce can be served with just pasta and vegetables or is wonderful on salmon or halibut.

The Barley Neck

T

he Barley Neck is owned by brothers Cameron and Tyler Hadfield. The two have been in the hospitality industry for many years and it shows in both the restaurant and the menu they have created. The menu is described as upscale tavern, classic New England fare; with a little Caribbean and maybe Asian thrown in, said Cam. Diners revel in the varied selections including seafood, pizza, burgers, steak, scampi, stroganoff, pasta and a variety of seasonal daily specials every night.

Citrus-Ginger Seared Hake Fillet Ingredients: 6 oz Hake fillet (or other fish 1 cup basmati rice substitute) 1 thumb sized piece ginger root, 1 large ripe ruby red grapefruit, peeled, minced zested, flesh segmented into 2 garlic cloves, minced supremes 1 bunch broccolini, blanched 1 lemon, zested (zest divided), ½ cup of dry white wine juiced 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup basmati rice 3 oz of butter, cubed Cooking oil Salt, as needed Method:

For the Citrus Ginger Basmati Rice: 1. Add the minced ginger and garlic into a small sauce pot with a wellfitting lid with a small amount of oil.

2. Saute on medium heat until fragrant; do not allow garlic to brown.

3. Add 2 cups of water and 1 oz of lemon juice and bring to a boil.

4. When boiling, salt to taste and add in 1 cup basmati rice. Bring back to a boil, stir well and turn off the heat. Cover well and allow the rice to steep according to instructions on the rice package.

8. Carefully place the fillet into the pan, angling the oil away from you.

9. Salt the now top of the fish and allow to sear for two to three minutes until well browned.

10. Carefully flip the fish and allow the second side to brown.

11. Finish the fish in the oven or broiler until desired doneness is achieved.

For the Citrus Beurre Blanc: 12. In a small saute pan heat white wine over medium heat and reduce by half. Add in 1 oz of lemon juice and continue to reduce for one minute.

13. Slowly pour in heavy cream while stirring.

14. Reduce the cream by half and add in remaining lemon zest, grapefruit zest and turn off the heat.

15. Slowly fold in the butter cubes a few at a time until all butter is emulsified.

16. Add in a few grapefruit supremes. (cut the supremes in half if too large) Reheat the broccolini and plate with the rice and fillet. Gently spoon the sauce over the fish, arranging the grapefruit segments. Garnish with fresh mint and strips of grapefruit zest.

Rock Harbor Grill

Sticky Toffee Pudding You’ll need 16 ramekins, a small and medium sauce pan, a mixer with a paddle attachment and a 2” hotel pan Ingredients: 2 lbs. dates, pitted and coarsely chopped (about 2 ½ cups) 2 cups water 2 tsp. baking soda 4 tsp. kosher salt

6 cups all purpose flour 1 lb. butter, at room temperature 4 cups packed brown sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 11 large eggs, at room temperature

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees 2. Coat sixteen 6 oz, ramekins with pan spray 3. Combine dates, water, and baking soda in a small sauce pan over high heat, bring to a boil, then remove from heat.

4. Place salt and flour in a medium bowl, whisk to combine and set aside.

5. Bring a medium pot of water to a simmer over high heat for a water bath 6. Combine butter and brown sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment and beat on medium speed until light and airy, about 5 minutes, stopping occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

7. Add vanilla, then beat in eggs, one at a time, to the butter/brown sugar mixture until just incorporated.

8. Remove bowl from mixer and stir in date mixture until well combined, stir in flour mixture until just incorporated. (Don’t overmix) 9. Divide batter evenly among the prepared ramekins and set in a 2” hotel pan, fill pan with the hot water until it reaches a level of halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake until the center of each cake is just set and a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 50-60 minutes. Allow cakes to cool before removing them from ramekins.

ock Harbor Grill, 18 Old Colony Way, owner Chuck Konner shared a dessert with his wife Meredith Smith at the Calypso Grill in the Cayman Islands, and he fell in love with her all over again, and also with the restaurant and the dessert, he said with a broad smile.

Today at the RHG, Chef Joseph Streitmatter has perfected that dessert and they were willing to share the recipe with us. The restaurant offers housemade desserts along with “snacks, starters, salads, hand helds, mains, and wood-fired pizzas.” RockHarborGrill.net Konner said this dessert is “the most amazing thing!”

Celebrating 50 Years of Artistic Excellence

n 2025, the Academy of Performing Arts (APA) will celebrate a significant milestone—its 50th anniversary. Founded in 1975, the APA has transformed from a small community theater into a cornerstone of Cape Cod’s cultural landscape. This anniversary year honors the Academy’s rich history while highlighting its ongoing commitment to fostering creativity and community through the performing arts.

Over the decades, the APA has served as a hub for theatrical productions, educational programs, and community engagement. Its Playhouse, located at 120 Main Street in Orleans, hosts a diverse array of performances, including musicals, dramas, comedies, and original works. Recent productions, such as “Annie”, showcase the talents of local actors, directors,

and musicians, drawing audiences from across the Cape.

In 2019, the APA underwent a transformative shift, redefining its mission to become a Center for the Arts.

This new direction emphasizes high-quality performances, arts education, and cultural opportunities, broadening its role beyond traditional theater productions. The Playhouse now welcomes a variety of events, including concerts, open mic nights, festivals, and film screenings, enriching the cultural fabric of the community.

Leading that shift is Judy Hamer, the Executive and Artistic Director of the Academy of Performing Arts, who has been a central figure in shaping the organization’s artistic vision and community involvement.
