Important Board Decisions at the February 22, 2018 Meeting The Board opened three sealed bids at the January 25, 2018 meeting for the purchase of 108 new dog waste stations, the removal of the existing 42 dog stations and the installation of the new stations. The bids were Gothic $30,120, Poopy Doo $34,577 and Green Living $52,440. We referred the bids to the Property and Grounds committee for further review and recommendation to the Board. The Board approved the Property and Grounds committee’s recommendation to accept the bid from Gothic.

The Property and Grounds Committee has reviewed a maintenance proposal to clean our storm drain system on an annual basis. The storm drain system consists of 22,000 linear feet.

The cost is $4.20 per linear feet or $92,400 per year. The recently completed storm drain cleaning project cost approximately $603,000 or $27.41 per linear foot. We approved the Property and Grounds Committee’s Preventative Maintenance recommendation to clean our storm drains annually. continues on page 5

At Scott Robinson Boulevard, a new Starbucks will be built. North Las Vegas will be home to Southern Nevada’s first Texas Roadhouse, near Bruce Street, just west of the Cannery Casino, as well as new locations of Jersey Mike’s, Blaze Pizza and Cafe Rio. Construction began in April, and more new restaurants will follow.

A new Sprouts Farmers Market grocery store also is opening this year near Decatur Boulevard and the 215 Beltway, along with a Petco pet supply store.

We’ve also recruited scores of new medical services so that you can take advantage of the very best health care, right in your own neighborhood. The Dignity Health hospital on Craig Road has been a wonderful success, and I’m pleased to announce that Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging will be building an adjacent radiology practice.

Other health care services and specialists also will be locating in new offices around

the hospital to offer one-stop, convenient care for our residents.

In addition, work is progressing nicely on MountainView Hospital’s ER at Aliante.

The 24/7 freestanding emergency center will include 12 patient rooms, radiology services, a lab and blood bank, and a pharmacy. It will be staffed with certified ER physicians and nurses, as well as multiple on-call hospital specialists. The facility is expected to open this fall.

Our City Council also recently approved a new shopping center to support the massive developments we’ve recruited to the area around Interstate 15 and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Thirty acres of vacant land near Lamb Boulevard and Tropical Parkway will soon transform into a bustling commercial center with a grocery store, big box retailer, restaurants and shops. The developer is in talks now with some of the biggest names out there!

North Las Vegas has received a lot of attention recently for all of the big e-commerce and logistics companies we’re attracting and for the millions of square feet of industrial space we’re building. These projects are game changers for the health of our community because they increase our city’s tax base and create jobs and opportunities for our residents. But we are just as laser focused on quality-of-life issues, providing the medical services you need, the shops you frequent, and the restaurants you love.

Crime Prevention 101 continued from page 4 • People often assume that safety is done “for” them, and not “by” them. Wrong. It is the responsibility of the resident to have a home/family safety plan to protect themselves and their property. No vigilantes please!

• People often assume that a property manager is responsible for responding to and preventing crime.

Wrong. The property manager works within established industry standards for what their duties entail. Preventing crime at a home is not one of them. However, keeping entry gates operational is. There is a great misunderstanding of who is responsible for what. Residents seem to want someone else responsible! Wrong.

• People often buy a home and live their life with no interest in who lives around them. Or, people buy their home and take an active interest in neighbors – this is by far the safer approach. Neighbors are often the first

ones to notice something amiss and summon help – for people they know!

• People assume that participating in a crime prevention effort will be inconvenient, intrusive, or require too much of them. Wrong. The basic approach to participation explained by a Crime Prevention Specialist or their designee corrects these misconceptions and hopefully promotes voluntary participation.

• People assume they will not like the people living around them. Wrong. More often than not, people are glad to meet and find that they actually like each other.

A huge benefit to neighborhood interaction and safety is awareness and communication.

• People assume that they are bothering the police when they call for help. Or, they assume that nothing can or will be done about the issue at hand. Wrong. Police are

in the neighborhoods to respond and hopefully improve safety and relationships. In fact, the biggest request from participating neighborhoods is the desire for more police presence, more response, and more interaction. This is a good thing!

• People are often unaware of how much interaction they can have with the police station providing service to their neighborhood, and, in many cases, the role of the police department is far more vast and open than many people realize. There is a great benefit to establishing awareness and relationships between residents and law enforcement professionals.
