At the launch of the new Navitimer Cosmonaute, Breitling reveals the original “first swiss wristwatch in space” for the first time since its 1962 mission
On the 60th anniversary of its journey aboard the Aurora 7 spacecraft, the mythic watch with the 24-hour dial is set to lift off once again in a new release that pays tribute to the historic mission. To mark the occasion, Breitling offered the first-ever public viewing of the original Cosmonaute since 1962—and revealed the watch’s incredible story.
In the 1960s, Breitling’s Navitimer was the undisputed pilot’s watch. But the world’s attention was rapidly advancing beyond air travel and into space exploration, and that meant a different kind of Space Race was quietly underway. This time, between watchmakers vying to be the first on astronauts’ wrists.
Breitling’s expertise in aviation watches shot the brand to the head of the pack. On May 24, 1962, Breitling officially claimed the title “first Swiss wristwatch in space” after astronaut Scott Carpenter orbited the Earth three times while wearing the Navitimer Cosmonaute during his Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. The watch had been Carpenter’s personal request, a variation on the iconic aviator’s watch he’d encountered in his flight days, but with a 24-hour dial to tell day from night in space.
On the 60th anniversary of that mission, Breitling not only unveiled Carpenter’s original Navitimer Cosmonaute, but also launched a modern tribute to it. This special release is limited to 362 pieces that recognize both the spacecraft’s circumnavigations of the Earth and the year the mission made history, marking a crucial step in manned spaceflight.
Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling, says, “When we introduced the redesigned Navitimer earlier this year, a question on everybody’s lips was, ‘What about the Cosmonaute?’ Today, I’m thrilled to finally announce two Cosmonaute reveals: the first-ever public viewing of the watch Scott Carpenter wore into space, and a 60th-anniversary limited-edition timepiece that pays tribute to its history-making forerunner.”
On May 24, 1962, five hours after launch, the Aurora 7 space capsule with Carpenter aboard splashed down safely in the Atlantic. The recovery operation lasted three hours, with the long exposure to seawater resulting in irreparable damage to Carpenter’s Cosmonaute. Breitling immediately replaced Carpenter’s watch, but that battered and corroded piece of space history remained in the Breitling family archives—unrestored and widely unknown. That is, until today.
Now, exactly 60 years after its historic flight, that great space watch was exhibited for the first time to select collectors, journalists, and watch enthusiasts at a space-themed event in Zurich. It was an afternoon of lively interaction, co-hosted by Georges Kern and former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, and featuring an impressive lineup of guest speakers that included members of the Carpenter family, Gregory Breitling, and historian and collector Fred Mandelbaum.
The panelists reflected on the Cosmonaute’s creation, the significance of Carpenter’s mission, and how both fit into the wider context of the space program at the time. Also exhibited was a Cosmonaute once owned by astronaut John Glenn and acquired at auction in 2019 by Gregory Breitling.
The Cosmonaute is a true Navitimer, meaning it has all the hallmarks of Breitling’s aviation icon: the circular slide rule for performing mathematical calculations, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association “wings” logo, and the trio of chronograph subdials. What separates the Cosmonaute from the rest of its family is its ability to tell 24-hour time. The Breitling Manufacture Caliber B02 was specifically designed for this task.
At first glance, the new Cosmonaute is a faithful reproduction of the original, made timeless with an all-black dial and black alligator strap or seven-row stainless-steel bracelet. On closer inspection, though, the elegantly proportioned 41 mm watch is packed with new features. One is its platinum bezel, a premium touch that makes this edition even more of a collector’s piece.
Another is its open sapphire crystal caseback that provides a window on the B02 movement with its special bridge engravings to mark the occasion: the words “Carpenter,” “Aurora 7,” and “3 orbits around the Earth,” along with the name of the original
group of seven astronauts chosen for NASA’s first human-crewed spaceflights, Mercury 7.
While other watch brands have claims to space firsts, only Breitling can call itself the “first Swiss wristwatch in space.” The only other Swiss timepiece to have reached orbit previously was a pocket stopwatch equipped with a strap.
The Cosmonaute, meanwhile—a wristwatch worn in space and designed according to an astronaut’s specifications—was kept precisely to those specs when it became available for purchase in 1962. Not only did the 24-hour timepiece go on to become a hit amongst collectors, it was frequently spotted on other astronauts’ wrists.
Today’s Cosmonaute takes us back to the origins of space travel, when the race was on, stakes were high, and every mission was a triumph of human ingenuity. This new watch honors the aesthetics of the original Cosmonaute, with subtle updates that work almost imperceptibly to give it its modern-retro appeal. As a final tribute, the caseback is engraved with the date of Carpenter’s mission, “ONE OF 362,” and the phrase “First Swiss wristwatch in space.”
The extra hours bring more opportunity for buyers to find their perfect home, making it no wonder that summer is the perfect time to put your property on the market.

A set of three fragile paintings, thought to have been commissioned around the time of the Gunpowder Plot, have been conserved by the National Trust and returned to their home after five years of painstaking work .
However, a mystery still remains about the location of the fourth painting in the set.
The paintings, showing three early Saints of the Catholic Church, have just returned to display at Chastleton House in West Oxfordshire, a large Jacobean manor house built between 1607 and 1612. The paintings are thought to have been hung in the house since it was built.
A programme of conservation to treat all the paintings started in 2017. Conservators had to tackle damage left behind by woodworm in the oak panels, as well as splitting of the boards making up each panel. Detailed analysis of the materials and methods used has uncovered some of the history of the paintings – but a number of questions remain unanswered. The subjects of the portraits are part of a group of early Christians referred to as “the Fathers of the Church”. Originally a set of four, the surviving three paintings show three Catholic saints: Pope Gregory I; Saint Jerome; and Saint Augustine Bishop of Hippo.
However, a fourth painting of Saint Ambrose, a fourth century theologian and Bishop of Milan, is missing. A magazine article in 1919 noted the four paintings as a set so while it is thought to have hung in the house until the early 20th Century, nobody knows where it is now. “It is a mystery,” said Ruth Peters, Senior Collections and House Officer
at Chastleton. “We have an idea of what it would look like as the paintings are based on - but are not an exact copy of - a set of four Flemish engravings. The last members of the family to live at Chastleton before it came into the care of the National Trust have no memory of the fourth painting. It might have been sold or given away and so could be hanging on somebody’s wall, unrecognised.”
The missing painting - an engraving of St Ambrose is a black and white engraving showing St Ambrose, with his Bishop’s regalia, seated at a desk writing in a book. Another mystery is why a set of paintings of four Catholic Saints were hung at Chastleton at a time when Catholics were prevented from practising their religion. Ruth explained that the estate had links to the most
notorious Catholic rebellion: “The estate was owned by Robert Catesby, infamous for masterminding the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a Catholic conspiracy to blow up Parliament and kill the protestant King James I. He had sold the estate three years earlier to Walter Jones, a lawyer whose family had gained their wealth in the wool trade.”
Catesby lived on at Chastleton until his execution in 1605. Jones then demolished all the structures and between 1607 and 1612 built the large manor house which stands today.
But despite those links, Ruth said displaying paintings such as the ‘Fathers of the Church’ was not necessarily a sign of religious protest.
“We don’t know a lot about Walter Jones or the intended use of the paintings at the time, but religious works hanging in the domestic homes were not always symbols of recusancy. The ‘Fathers of the Church’ may have innocently been seen by the family as
historical figures. Religious images were officially banned from churches, but not necessarily the home and images were allowed if used as teaching devices - but not for worship.
The conservation work, which included funding from the Getty Foundation panel painting initiative for Saint Augustine, included a full technical analysis of all three paintings undertaken at the Courtauld Institute of Art’s Conservation Department which has helped to understand the early history of the paintings.
It is thought that the paintings were produced in Britain in the late 16th or early 17th century with pigment analysis showing colours which were all available at the time. Dendrochronology - an analysis of tree rings in the timber boards - found that several of the panels are from the same tree, a Worcestershire oak felled in about 1563, possibly from the clearance of the Wyre Forest. But there were also clues that the timber had been recycled, possibly from furniture, perhaps a table or a chest of drawers, so were likely painted some years after the tree was felled.
However, despite detailed analysis and research, it has not yet been possible to identify who painted the three portraits.
Rebecca Hellen, the Trust’s Senior National Conservator of Paintings said: “We believe they were painted by native English or AngloNetherlandish artists. Sets of paintings were often worked on by artists
and their assistants together. There had been a substantial influx of painters from the Netherlands initially into London and then other parts of the country. While the paintings stylistically share many qualities with contemporary English paintings, they also have qualities of AngloNetherlandish artists.”
“Portrait sets such as this and painted decorations set into carved panelling became popular from around 1590. They are an important set, not least for their history as part of Chastleton House and it is wonderful to have them back in such good condition.”
Chastleton House is known for its worn look and dusty patina, it is presented as it was found by the National Trust rather than how it looked in its heyday. One important consideration was to ensure the focus was on preserving the paintings as opposed to restoring them back to their original appearance, so they did not look out of place at Chastleton.
The Trust’s experts worked closely with the team of conservators supporting decisions as the losses were in-painted, while still acknowledging the levels of damage and keeping the final conservation looking just right for the property.
Although the puzzle over what happened to Saint Ambrose’s portrait remains, the three others from the set will be back on display at Chastleton

Fans of luscious scented candles will be delighted to know that Lush has launched three new scented candles online and in shops nationwide. Following the high demand of Lush’s limited edition Snow Fairy candle in 2021, the popular Lush scents of Orange Blossom, The Olive Branch, and Sleepy will be available permanently. Poured into frosted glass jars filled with Lush’s best-selling fragrances, with a burn time of approximately 12-15hrs.
The candle base is made up of rapeseed wax, coconut oil, coconut wax, and castor wax and remains palm, paraffin, soy-free, and 100% vegan. Infused with high-quality, ethically-sourced essential oils, Lush candles are perfect for relaxing and accompanying favourite bathtime products.
The practice of candle gazing is well known in well-being circles as a way to drop into a meditative state – lighting a candle can transform the mood of your room to help you feel calm and relaxed.
Lush believe in long candlelit baths so wanted to create the perfect candle to accompany your bath time. It was an exciting process to modify the Lush fragrance from perfume and bath bombs to candles. This is their first permanent launch of candles with more scents to follow in the future.
A powerful blend of orange blossom, neroli and sandalwood give any room a big comforting hug.
A trio of light floral and citrus oils blend to create this scent, packed with gentle energy. Zesty bergamot works to clear the mind, while neroli encourages a sense of inner peace and cheerfulness. Orange flower absolute, one of the most popular ingredients in perfumery, brings an uplifting calm.
Find your peace with comforting citrusy woody notes of bergamot, orange flower, and oakmoss.
A scent that changes over time, galbanum oil invites a refreshingly green top note, while bergamot and orange flower do their cheerful thing. Oakmoss, a stalwart of perfumery, helps to ground the scent (and yourself).
Rosemary, often used as a heart note in perfumery, is believed to promote cleansing for the air and mind. The leaves have higher concentrations of active ingredients and essential oil in summertime, so harvesting is done in hot, dry weather, after sunrise, once the dew has evaporated.
Relax and wind down in a cloud of dreamy lavender and ylang ylang essential oil.
Dreamy lavender oil fills the air to urge you towards a more relaxed state. Calming ylang ylang oil has long been considered a natural mind-easer, attempting to bring you a little more peace with its a sweet and heady fragrance.
It takes at least 1,000 pounds of orange blossom to produce just one pound of Neroli oil. Lush sources the neroli oil in this candle from Lebanon, where it’s the by-product of the orange flower water industry, meaning no additional pressure is placed on the environment for its production. Lush buy orange blossoms from farmers who ensure their land and orchards are designated “no hunt” zones, and partner with small-scale producers who, using generations-old traditional techniques and expertise, distill a highquality essential oil, supporting the local community.
Price £12.00 (75g). Vegan. Price information correct at time of press.

Hook Line Sinker is a seafood cookbook from Michelin-starred chef Galton Blackiston featuring recipes created through his lifelong love affair with fish and shellfish.
Galton’s seafood dishes have always turned heads. He has a knack of taking simple ingredients and pairing them with techniques and flavours that allow the flavours to remain pure whilst bringing a sense of fun to the occasion. Cooking seafood is an art and in this book, Galton shows you how to master it.
The book features over 90 recipes divided into five chapters - Quick and Easy, Small Plates, Stress-Free, Spicy Seafood and Main Courses.
Hook Line Sinker isn’t a huge how-to reference guide, or a seafood bible to teach you everything about each fish in the sea. It’s a very personal book featuring Galton’s all-time favourite recipes, all of which have featured on his menu in some form over the years, but more importantly, are great to cook at home.
Further Information:
It’s one thing to run a successful Michelin-starred restaurant and retain the star year after year. It’s another thing entirely to branch out and open a takeaway, but this sort of challenge makes Galton the chef he is. His great desire is to bring good food to his customers – whether they are gastronomes, or holidaymakers wanting traditional fish and chips.
The book features a foreword by Michel Roux OBE, who says: “Like all the best recipe books, Hook Line Sinker is not merely a collection of recipes but an honest celebration of life, discoveries and ideas: a story shared about the simple, sometimes nostalgic, pleasures of sharing and eating. Few are so intimately and enjoyably written as this one by my friend Galton Blackiston.”

½ tsp salt
½ tsp caster sugar
½ tsp turmeric
3 large Maris Piper potatoes
12 raw tiger prawns, 3 per serving
1 litre vegetable oil, for frying
8 spring onions, chopped
1 handful of coriander, chopped
To make the dipping sauce, whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl. Set aside until needed.
To make the fritters, in a bowl mix together the flour, sparkling water, salt, sugar and turmeric and set aside to rest for 10 minutes.
Peel the potatoes and cut into julienne strips. Peel and de-vein the tiger prawns and cut in half lengthways. Set aside.
Heat the oil in a deep fat fryer to 180°C. Fold the potatoes, prawns, spring onions and coriander through the batter mix. To prepare the shallots, place the seasoned flour onto a plate, put the egg and milk into a shallow bowl and the Panko breadcrumbs onto another plate. Dust the shallot rings with the seasoned flour, dip into the beaten egg, shaking off any excess as you lift them out, and then coat with the Panko breadcrumbs. Set aside on kitchen paper.

1 tbsp cornflour
1 tbsp sesame oil
rapeseed oil
1 tbsp rice wine
1 tbsp soy sauce
Serves four.
2 shallots, peeled, finely sliced
2 garlic cloves, peeled, grated
6 tbsp cooked black beans, rinsed
1 lobe of ginger, peeled, grated
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
250ml chicken stock
1 good pinch of sugar
sea salt & black pepper
1 tbsp chopped mint
2 tbsp chopped coriander
1 large red chilli, sliced
2 tbsp sliced spring onions
juice of 2 limes
Add another splash of rapeseed oil to the same pan, turn the heat down, add the shallots and garlic and sauté until softened but not coloured. Next add the black beans and ginger with the soy sauce, sesame oil, chicken stock and a good pinch of sugar. Turn up the heat a little and bring the mixture up to simmering point.
Return the squid to the pan and cook for a further 5 minutes or so, tasting and seasoning with salt and freshly ground black pepper as you do so.
To fry the shallots, as the squid is returned to the pan heat the oil in a deep fat fryer to 180°C. Carefully lower the shallots into the oil and fry until crisp and golden brown. Remove from the fryer and drain on kitchen paper.
Serve the squid in the black bean sauce topped with chopped mint, chilli and spring onion, drizzle over a little lime juice and top with the fried shallots and coriander.

• Ultimate track-honed BMW M4 CSL enjoys 40hp power boost over the BMW M4 Competition Coupé to 550hp
• Carbon-fibre roof, bonnet and boot lid lead meticulous weight-saving measures
• Testing at Nürburgring’s Nordschleife 12.8 mile-track achieved a 7:15.677 lap time –best-ever figure for a BMW road car
As its 50th birthday celebrations gather pace, BMW M GmbH is unveiling a new BMW M4 CSL, fusing old-school racing passion with innovative technology to create the ultimate performance experience. Its character is defined by a power hike of 40hp over the current BMW M4 Competition Coupé to 550hp and a host of meticulous weight-saving measures
With years of experience in working with carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for body, chassis and interior components, BMW M engineers have managed to restrict the special edition’s kerb weight to 1,625kg (in standard specification in the German market). As a result, the new BMW M4 CSL is 100kg lighter than the BMW M4 Competition Coupé (in standard specification in the German market), sprinting from 0 to 62mph in 3.7 seconds, and 124mph in just 10.7 seconds – 1.8 seconds quicker than the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. Top speed is an electronically limited 190mph.
The new BMW M4 CSL has track driving as its raison d’être, its two-seater configuration and chassis set-up sharing the genes of its competition-spec sibling, the BMW M4 GT3. In tests on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, it posted a lap time of 7:15.677 on the 12.8-mile track, with an official notarised time for the 12.943-mile circuit (the complete lap) of 7:20.207 – the best figures ever for a series-produced BMW car. Lap times aside, the new BMW M4 CSL allows drivers to enjoy an intense racing-car feeling on the road as well as on the track.
Production will begin at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in July 2022 and is strictly limited to 1,000 units globally, with only 100 models allocated to the UK, priced from £128,820 OTR.
Lightweight design has played a central role at BMW M GmbH from day one. In 1973 the BMW 3.0 CSL won the European Touring Car Championship at the first attempt. Today, the CSL designation stands for “Competition, Sport, Lightweight” and marks out high-performance models with particularly high output, rigorously reduced weight and a character honed purposefully for driving on the track.
Conventional components for the exterior, interior, powertrain and chassis were replaced with lightweight model-specific alternatives. M Carbon full bucket seats reduced weight by 24kg, while 21kg was saved by removing the rear seats and belts. Chassis changes such as the use of lightweight M Carbon ceramic brakes and special light-alloy wheels, springs and struts saved 21kg. Switching to ultra-lightweight sound insulation saved
around 15kg. The use of CFRP in the body deducts 11kg, a titanium rear silencer cuts more than 4kg, and a further 4kg was saved from the BMW kidney grille, rear lights, floor mats and climate control.
The BMW M4 Competition Coupé already features a roof made from CFRP, cutting weight and lowering its centre of gravity, which in turn enhances agility. The body of the BMW M4 CSL also includes the use of carbon-fibre for the bonnet and boot lid. The CFRP bonnet is approximately 1.2kg lighter than the BMW M4 Competition Coupé’s aluminium item. Its carbon-fibre structure is revealed by two unpainted, red-outlined indents extending in line with the BMW kidney grille to the edge of the bonnet. Red accent lines also emphasise the two fins on the CFRP roof and the contours of the extended side sills.
The Frozen Brooklyn Grey metallic exterior paint finish is exclusive to the BMW M4 CSL, with Alpine White and Sapphire Black also available. Classic “BMW Motorsport” emblems for the bonnet, boot lid and wheel centres are also available, recalling the 1973 originals
The lightweight coupé only has seats for the driver and front passenger, but these are no ordinary seats. The M Carbon racing bucket seats were developed exclusively for the BMW M4 CSL with the focus firmly on track driving. Their carbon-fibre structure and deliberate lack of comfort features such as heating and lumbar adjustment allowed weight to be reduced by 24kg.
Their pronounced contours offer an extremely high level of lateral support and an integrated side airbag, while cut-outs enable the use of a six-point harness. The seats have a fixed backrest angle, while the seat height can only be adjusted in a workshop using a three-stage screw linkage.
The forward/back adjustments can be made manually using a lever on the front edge of the seat. The head restraints can be disassembled for track use to avoid interfering with a helmet.
Trimmed in black leather with red Alcantara inserts for the outer backrest surfaces and head restraints, contrast stitching in the colours of BMW M GmbH adorn both the seat bolsters and the seat belts. M Carbon bucket seats with enhanced comfort are available as an alternative option, and are still 9.6kg lighter than the seats in the BMW M4 Competition Coupé.
These optional seats combine racing functionality and lightweight design with a higher level of comfort, with electrically operated adjustment, seat heating and an Easy-Entry function allowing easy access to the rear, where a stowage area behind the seats provides space for two helmets. Removing the rear seat cuts weight by around 21kg.
The centre console of the new BMW M4 CSL is made entirely from CFRP, the material’s distinctive structure clearly visible around the gear selector and iDrive Controller. The use of carbon-fibre more than halves the weight of the centre console, a saving of around 4kg. The new special-edition model shares the BMW M4 Competition Coupé’s signature interior design, focused entirely on performance.
M-specific displays, ergonomically optimised controls with red accents, the M-specific gear selector and the anthracite-coloured headliner create a racing aura even before the car has turned a wheel. Putting the finishing touches to the cockpit are the carbon-fibre interior trim strip and “CSL” badging below the head restraints, on the centre console and the rear panel. The M Alcantara steering wheel features a red 12 o’clock marker, carbon-fibre inlays on the three spokes and CFRP shift paddles.
