Copy deadline for September issue: 31st July 2020

At the beginning of lockdown we were half way through distributing our April issue when we had to stop. However, with government guidelines changing we were able to get all our April copies out and through your letterboxes at the end of May but for obvious reasons they were not available at our pick up points.

Here at BLMC HQ we had been preparing for our big 15th Birthday Celebrations in May but sadly we were not able to produce our May and June issues! I did not feel like celebrating as you can imagine but I am so grateful for all our readers and customers that make these magazines possible. We now publish Elvetham

Personally, I’ve been really struggling to process what’s going on and I’m sure I’m not alone. I think I’ve probably been going through the stages of grief and behavioral change all at the same time. There was the denial, the anger, the bargaining, the depression and finally acceptance. To be fair, I am still far from accepting home schooling whilst working from home but I have been lucky that my daughter in Year 6 is now back at school and my son is continuing his college work online. I am not saying I am on top of things and thriving in the ‘new normal’ but I have certainly adapted.

Heath and Fleet Life monthly and Wellesley Life bi-monthly, and hope that they will continue to connect our community and the businesses in the area.

h A vital pub for

the community The decline of pubs in the UK has been well documented in the press and the decrease has been steady for several decades. From 2000 to 2017, pub numbers declined by 20%. More recently, between 2011 and 2017 pub numbers fell by 12% and this trend is certainly noticeable here in Aldershot. With Brewery owned or leased pubs closing, a group of customers of The White Lion pub in Lower Farnham Road are determined to stop this happening to their local. The Aldershot Civic Society, CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and the pub’s customers have decided that The White Lion really is too good to lose and are acting to ensure its future - not only as a pub but as “more than a pub” and have launched a campaign to buy and keep the pub running. Our campaign was in its infancy in March, then the wretched COVID-19 virus crisis erupted and lockdown meant all pubs closed. You could be forgiven for thinking that during such trying times, nothing was happening regarding the pub’s future but you couldn’t be more wrong. The campaign was accepted onto the Plunkett Foundation’s More Than A Pub programme and allocated a Business Advisor to help with our Action Planning and guide us on our path to success. With the help of the Plunkett Foundation we were successfully registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a Community Benefit Society with the official name “Aldershot Community Pub Limited”. This makes our group a legal entity. In order to gauge interest in buying shares in the White Lion a share pledge form was produced so people could make a non-binding

pledge to buy shares at £20 a share. Clearly we need to raise a large sum of money (amount still being finalised) so people are asked to invest as much as they can afford. There is also a tax incentive with 30% tax relief available. This means, for example, if £1,000 worth of shares are purchased then £300 will be refunded in tax relief so the investment actually costs £700. We have adopted a bolder logo that has the white lion’s head on a black background and the strapline “KEEP THE WHITE LION ROARING!” This is now our instantly recognisable emblem. We have T-Shirts available with the logo and invite people to send us pictures of themselves wearing the T-Shirt. In order to extend our social media reach we now have our own twitter account so emerging news can be passed on swiftly. The great news that was immediately put on twitter is that the Plunkett Foundation has awarded us a £2,500 bursary to assist with our feasibility and development costs. This is great news and shows that we have developed the campaign sufficiently to meet the Plunkett Foundations stringent requirements and reinforces our confidence in achieving success in our project.

6 | Wellesley Life July/August 2020

The purchase will be funded by a combination of the public share issue, potential grants and loans and a commercial loan. The mix of these sources is subject to the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on resources so it is not possible to give firm numbers at the moment. Keep an eye on our social media for news as and when it becomes available!

How you can help... What we could do with now is members of the public to come forward who are keen to help with our community-outreach programme and/or people interested in purchasing a share and ensuring our future. Email us at our gmail address to be on our contact list/offer help. Complete our pledge form available on our website. Check out the website www.white lionaldershot.co.uk regularly for all our news and on the forthcoming share offer. Keep up with all the developments on the campaign on the White Lion Aldershot Community Pub Facebook page, Twitter account, or email savethewhitelionaldershot@ gmail.com for more info.

Lockdown

Stories An innovative outreach project has been launched by clinicians at Royal Surrey to screen and treat the local homeless community for hepatitis C and liver damage.

Royal Surrey pop up clinics providing life-saving healthcare to the homeless during Covid-19

Homeless people are historically at a much higher risk of contracting hepatitis C, a blood borne virus that can cause liver damage, as well as being less likely to access essential healthcare. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, homeless people across Surrey have been housed, giving clinicians much needed access to this group. Royal Surrey doctors and nurses have taken advantage of the opportunity by working with the Hepatitis C Trust to set up this potentially life-saving service. So far the team has screened over 100 patients for hepatitis C and liver damage, treating those who need it. Romanie Westwood, Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Trust has been instrumental in providing this service and said: “Hepatitis C can cause many serious health problems and although the prevalence of this disease in the general Surrey

population is relatively low, the risk of hepatitis C to the homeless population can be up 20 times higher. “The team has worked closely with the Hepatitis C Trust to provide essential care to this historically under-cared for population.

“By working alongside the Royal Surrey pop up clinics, our Peer Support Workers have been able to reach and support some of the most marginalised and hardest to engage people within our society.

Rachel Halford, Chief Executive Officer of the Hepatitis C Trust said:

“This has been a unique window of opportunity where we have been able to provide education and awareness about hepatitis C to stop transmission and support those who have been diagnosed to access the short course of treatment needed to cure hepatitis C.”

“In what has been the most extraordinary and difficult of times for many, it has been fantastic to turn restriction into something positive.

These vital pop up clinics are based throughout the Guildford and Woking areas and will continue for the foreseeable future.

“The project has been hugely rewarding in a time where everything feels quite bleak.”

Easy Grilled Vegetables (4-6 servings)

Summer time is BBQ time! Whether it’s meat or vegge there is nothing quite like BBQ food. I grew up with the traditional meat and salad and maybe a bun but ever since a friend of mine introduced me to these grilled vegetables, they have been a firm staple at our family BBQs. There is no need for skewers or marinating, all you need is a vegetable grill pan. If you don’t own one you can pick one up for about £9 from places like B&Q simply use a tin foil parcel.

or grape tomatoes, leave whole) • 1 yellow or white onion, peeled and ends removed, cut into eighths • 1 medium zucchini, ends removed, sliced in half lengthwise, then cut into 1/2” pieces • 1 medium yellow squash, ends removed, sliced in half lengthwise, then cut into 1/2” pieces • 1 carton (8 oz) mushrooms, cleaned and halved • 2 Tbsp. olive oil • 1 Tbsp. dried mixed herbs (or Herbs de Provence) • black pepper and sea salt, freshly ground (optional) You can pretty much use whatever vegetables you have available. I love using aubergines, leeks and peppers, too and make sure it is as colourful as possible.

2. In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, zucchini, squash, and mushrooms with 2 Tbsp. of olive oil and the mixed herbs plus a generous amount of freshly-ground salt and pepper if using. Then toss until vegetables are evenly coated. Transfer vegetables to a grill pan and set on the grill. Stirring every 2-3 minutes, until vegetables are tender and lightly charred. 3. Remove from the grill and serve as side or main dish at your BBQ. Enjoy!

Wellesley Life meets... Please tell us a bit about who you are and what you do? My name is Mary Webb and I work at The Vine Centre in Aldershot. Our aim is to help transform the lives of the vulnerable and most socially isolated members of the community. Tell us a bit about your background. I am an original Essex girl (no, I don’t own white stilettos!) brought up in a small family. Once I had finished my GCSE’s I took a holiday job working in a local bank and at the end of this I was lucky enough to be offered a job working in the city. My first job was in the outwards payments department processing transactions on a computer that was almost desk sized and every transaction had to be manually ticked back at the end of the day. We thought it was all very cutting-edge then! I went on to a career in banking in the city, which was bought to an end when I contracted ME and I lost 6 months of my life just sleeping, too weak to even dress myself. It was quite a long haul to get back to ‘normal’. How did you come to be working at The Vine? I first encountered The Vine when I was running my own business – Tiny Touches Jewellery (making silver fingerprint jewellery). I started out as a volunteer, spent time as one of the trustees and then took on the role of Corporate & Community Fundraiser. This has developed over time and I have most recently been looking after the running of our social enterprise – Vine Dining. How has the coronavirus pandemic affected the people you support through the charity? Covid-19 robbed many of their liberty, family and support networks and impacted on mental health as people struggled to adjust to what was going on and as time goes on the level of need continues for those who have lost jobs and have underlying health issues, both mental and physical. Personally, I have had a comfortable experience of lockdown so far, but for many the reality is much harsher. Not eating properly,

lack of sleep and being stuck indoors all have an impact on people. The longer someone is stuck indoors, the harder it becomes to be motivated and added to that are any health issues/worries. What are some of the biggest issues you’ve had to face as a charity during this pandemic? As a charity we offer support over the phone and have noticed in the last couple of weeks that these calls are taking longer, are more intense and people are more stressed as the situation continues. In the early days people needed at chat, now the issues are more serious, including crisis pleas for help. We constantly seek to support everyone who turns to us. And how has your job role itself changed over the past few months? I’ve been coordinating the Vine Dining food deliveries for the past 12 weeks. Almost overnight we went from being a catering enterprise to cooking and delivering meals to those who are isolated. Each week we cook and deliver 300 meals as well as providing store cupboard ingredients. We cater for approx. 130 people including individuals and families, sometimes with food allergies/intolerances. Everyone is so grateful and we have had some lovely ‘thank yous’. Our clients age range is 5-95 – some are young carers and it’s humbling to see what some people cope with on a daily basis. I’m not sure that I could cope on a ‘normal’ day, let alone in the circumstances that Covid 19 has inflicted. How do you think the local community has come together during this crisis? Aldershot is so varied – there’s a huge mix of people from all walks of life. What we have seen in the last few weeks is the community coming together to support and encourage each other. We have been blessed with some wonderful volunteers who have given up their time to deliver food parcels to those who are isolated. How has the coronavirus pandemic affected you personally? Who could have known what this year would hold! In the space of what

12 | Wellesley Life July/August 2020

seemed like a MARY WEBB couple of weeks, my husband had occupied the spare bedroom for his new office and my 14yr old daughter was home-schooling’ from the dining room table. At first I thought we would all get on each other’s nerves, but actually it has brought us all together. The hardest part has been the social isolation for a young teenager. Social media is fine, but nothing beats being able to hang out with your friends. Plus it’s a pressure working from home, mostly on a laptop each day, instead of interactive lessons with an actual teacher. What positives have you taken from the experience of lockdown? We realised just how much money we spent of coffees and cakes when going out and my waistline has thanked me for those being cut out. And my husband is more involved in the daily routine, instead of coming home at 7pm and gets to have lunch with our daughter. What are you looking forward to being able to do again when restrictions are lifted? What we miss is being able to visit some of our favourite places, but we have explored and found some lovely places to walk locally. We are most looking forward to being able to holiday in this country – a two week holiday in the Dales has been postponed already. Where is your favourite place to eat/ drink/go in Aldershot? I hope very much that when we reach the other side of all of this and find a new ‘normal’ that life and vigour will return to the town centre. And we are looking forward to being able to visit our favourite restaurant, Mimosa. Any funny moments which stand out from the past 2 months? The whole family being at home and working together in the same house has taken some adjustment and I fast learned that wandering into what was the spare room in my vest wasn’t good when hubby was on a Zoom management meeting!

VIRTUAL VIEWINGS

252 622052

The internet has proved to be one of the saviours during this pandemic and the ability to work from home has saved many businesses. Browsing on the web for anything and everything has become the norm including property. Static photos of a property may give an idea but a full video walk around provides the potential tenant with far more information.

2019 ďšş 2020

LETTING AGENT IN FLEET

In the past, having advertised a property and found interested tenants, we would organise a physical viewing. Potential tenants will often request viewings to compare with other properties, get an idea of what they could let or simply to browse. Depending on the property we could carry out multiple viewings before a suitable tenant is found. Often, the properties are occupied by the current tenant or owner and viewings can be disruptive. With the Corona-COVID 19 pandemic requiring minimum contact between people we are now trying to minimise the risks. As well as the standard photos we are now providing a video walk around of the property. Properties that may not have great kerb appeal are suddenly promoted by the ability to take a look from the comfort of the sofa. When potential tenants respond to our adverts we ask that they watch the video in full. If the potential tenant is still keen we would ask that they drive by the property to get a feel for the area. If they still wish to proceed a basic application form is completed and they are then proposed to the Landlord. If they are suitable for the property and meet the referencing criteria we proceed with the physical viewing. We have found the new system to be very successful and, in most cases, only one physical viewing has resulted in applicants signing up for a tenancy. Although technology is great it doesn’t replace the personal interaction needed to assess an applicant. At Honey Lettings we pride ourselves on placing the right tenants in properties. Landlords often ask what we think about a tenant and this information is often gleaned during the physical viewing. Conversations with the applicant about their current position, why they are moving and previous issues may indicate a tenant with issues or that they would be ideal for the property. Moving forward Honey Lettings have signed up to use the very latest virtual tour technology. Using an amazing camera and sophisticated software we will be offering virtual guided tours of properties. The specialist camera not only gathers 360 degree images it also takes measurements as it goes. Honey Lettings will be able to walk tenants around the property via a Zoom type connection to allow the agent to discuss the property with the potential tenant. This is the technology of the moment but like many things at the moment, it may prove to be a great success and a great resource for the future. Honey Lettings are able to move quickly to adopt the new technologies when required maintaining the first-class service our landlords have come to expect. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

• They also have the power to serve a remedial notice on a landlord to ensure compliance with the regulations if they believe the landlord is in breach. • Landlords have 28 days from the date the notice is received to remedy the breach, and if the work is not carried out in time then the local authority has the power to carry out the required works themselves (on providing prior written notice to the landlord) and then recover their costs from the landlord. • Landlords who fail to comply with the regulations may face a civil penalty up to a maximum of £30,000.

Report requirements • The report will need to be supplied to new tenants before they move in, to existing tenants

With many summer holiday activities now uncertain, one thing’s for certain – children can still get their noses into a good book! The annual Summer Reading Challenge in Hampshire’s libraries is coming – and this time it’s digital. The aim is to read any six books, with children receiving a medal and certificate when they cross the finish line. Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: “We are looking forward to the 2020 Summer Reading Challenge, with its ‘Silly Squad’ theme, beginning for Hampshire’s young readers.

Emotional and Practical Support in Challenging Times The last few months have seen us all adapting to new ways of managing our home and work lives, as we strive to contain the spread of Coronavirus. Local charity Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care (PTHC) is working with the NHS to help tackle the pandemic head on, with its medical and nursing teams providing 24-hour front line care to its patients and their families, both at the Hospice and in patients’ own homes. However, it is not only clinical care which the charity provides – it also offers counselling, social work advice, welfare support and pastoral care, through its Patient & Family Support team, which is continuing to provide its services throughout the pandemic. The Patient & Family Support team offers practical and emotional help to Phyllis Tuckwell’s patients and their families. Its Social Workers and Benefits & Entitlements Officers advise on welfare and benefits issues, ensuring that its patients and their families are still able to receive the ongoing practical and financial support they need, and helping them to apply for other items, such as blue badges for their cars, where appropriate. During the pandemic they are also helping vulnerable patients to register for shopping and prescription deliveries, and offering regular phone calls to those who are self-isolating. The charity’s Counsellors are also offering telephone support to patients and families, including newly bereaved families of its

patients. The team has created a support pack tailored to dealing with bereavement during the pandemic, and has extended access to its bereavement services to include other families of patients who have been referred to PTHC by the NHS. Phyllis Tuckwell’s Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy team are focusing mainly on the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit, visiting patients every day and offering support calls to families where appropriate. Members of the team are able to sit and talk with patients, and read out messages which their loved ones have sent them when they are unable to visit due to coronavirus restrictions. Patients can talk to friends and relatives on phone or video calls any time they want to, and those with a TV in their room can bring

Families are offered comfort pebbles, one of which can be kept by the patient and the other taken by their loved ones, or can take home a vigil candle from the chapel, as a way of keeping a link with the Hospice and their loved one. By adapting quickly to new ways of working, Phyllis Tuckwell has been able to continue to provide the compassionate supportive and end of life care which it is so well known for locally, supporting its patients and their families throughout these challenging times. Rosie’s Good Reads Valley Of Death by Scott Mariani is a Ben Hope action thriller. This story takes place mainly in India. Kabir Ray, a leading archaeologist in the continued search for answers about the Bronze Age Indus peoples, recently went missing in a remote area. His family call in ex-SAS officer Ben to help find him.

Uncovering The Merchant’s Secret by Elisabeth Hobbes is an historical romance set in Brittany. John Sutton is aboard a ship when it runs aground and is wrecked. Injured and washed-up on shore, he is rescued by villagers, but he finds that he can’t remember his name or where he lives.

Neander by Harald Johnson is a timetravel adventure. Tom Cook is working on an archaeological dig in Gibraltar, when his pregnant fiancée goes missing. When Tom goes searching for her, he slips through a time portal that takes him back... way back, to 40,000 years ago.

Twenty by Debra Landwehr Engle is a contemporary story about a middle-aged woman who wants to give up on life. Broken by the loss of close family members, loneliness and an unbearable Iowa heatwave, Meg takes some pills and will then have just twenty days before she dies.

Number Eight Crispy Chicken by Sarah Neofield is a political satire. The immigration minister has been detained! Minister for Asylum Deterrence and Foreign Investment, Peter Ruddick, is en route to the remote Pulcherrima Island, the site of his latest privately-run, fast food chain-inspired detention centre, when disaster strikes. 28 | Wellesley Life July/August 2020
