Fleet Life meets... Lilianne, a 21-year-old singer songwriter who has written a poignant song about the pandemic called ‘One Day Soon’. How long have you been singing/songwriting? I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember because both my parents are musicians and they used to get me up on stage when they would gig. My mum is an incredible singer and she used to tell me that after she’d sung at a gig she would ask me what I thought. Apparently, I would always say something like ‘It was ok, not as good as the original’ and then tell her what she could have done better! haha (Sorry mum!). I wrote my first song at the age of 10 after my dad taught me what a chord was – I absolutely fell in love with it and have been songwriting ever since. How did ‘One Day Soon’ come about? The song is relatively positive but it came about when I was feeling quite down about the current situation. I’m sure we’ve all felt the same over the last year where some days are harder than others so I decided to focus on everything we have to look forward to when this is all over. It’s been so hard for everyone to be away from the people and things they love but it’s just going to make the day we can experience it all again all the more special. I wrote the first two verses quite quickly and shared a video of me singing them on my social media. The response was so amazing that I decided to finish the song and release it properly.
6 | Fleet Life May/June 2021
The hardest part was making sure I acknowledged how tough this year has been for so many people. I will be able to see all my loved ones when everything is back to normal, but so many people have had their lives permanently affected by the pandemic and I didn’t want to ignore that. How have people responded to the song? Singer-songwriter James Morrison tweeted ‘Holy s**t’ in response to it and Charlie Mackesy, author of ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’, tweeted that he loved it. He also then posted some illustrations of people hugging with the title ‘One Day Soon’! BBC Introducing played my song on BBC Sussex and Surrey and it got chosen as track of the day which I was really proud of. Do you think it’s important to mark the pandemic with something memorable like a song? I think most artists find that events which affect the whole world, such as the pandemic, spark a lot of inspiration. I also like how I will be able to look back at this time in my life and have a little time capsule in the form of a song. If One Day Soon helps just one person feel more positive about the current situation then it will have been worth it for me. I find it a lot easier to sing about my feelings than talk about them so I definitely use songwriting to help other people in that way to show they’re not alone.
How have you found the pandemic? Tough for performers like yourself with bars, theatres etc all shut? I’ve definitely missed performing live because there’s no other feeling quite like it, but social media has become such a massive tool for artists over the last few years and the pandemic has only made it more important. It’s been hard to see how performers have suffered due to the pandemic but people have come up with some incredibly creative ideas to keep their audiences connected to them. What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? I love seeing the way the community comes together and the pandemic has really highlighted that with people setting up food banks and offering to shop and deliver food for vulnerable people. What would you do to improve or change Fleet? I would love to see more showcasing of local talent e.g. more buskers along the high street. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? I’ve been given a lot of good advice throughout my life but I think one of my favourites is to not worry about what anyone else is doing because they’re all making it up as they go along just like you. Interview by Emily Gregory of Baby Love Photography, www.baby-love-photography.com

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley
PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

For the Landlord their property is probably one of their highest value assets and they want to know it is in safe hands. As Fleet’s only agent specialising in lettings, we are able to concentrate on making sure our landlords and their properties are our top priority. MAINTENANCE – Whether managed by the landlord or an agent, attending to maintenance issues swiftly is crucial. Tenants are generally more comfortable if the property is managed by an agent, but most importantly, they like to feel issues are dealt with quickly and competently. Honey Lettings believe quarterly checks are essential to spot small problems that could quickly escalate into bigger issues. The checks verify that the property is not deteriorating beyond normal wear and tear and give the tenant the opportunity to point out any issues. We will point out problems that the tenant should resolve and hopefully guide them into how they can be avoided in the future. We will also present issues which need resolving by the landlord and find suitable contractors when required. Leaving a property unchecked for a long period may leave the landlord with a property needing substantial repairs well beyond the value of the deposit held. Properties, both new and old, suffer from issues including leaks from shower, toilets not flushing or heating systems and electrics failing. These can happen at any time day or night and to keep the tenant happy these will require prompt attention. Honey Lettings have competent contractors who we use on a regular basis, all with the relevant insurance cover to undertake the work. With a key held at our local office we can liaise with tenants to give access for contractors. If the problem is of an urgent nature, our out of hours call handling will enable us to arrange a visit to resolve the issue promptly and avoid further damage. Good management of the property will hopefully lead to happy tenants who are likely to stay in the property longer. Having a good relationship with your tenants will generally mean that they are flexible. At the end of the tenancy a happy tenant will hopefully be flexible with the marketing the property to the next tenant and hopefully minimise void time at the property. Cover provided by the Management Service will leave you free from this responsibility and is essential for those spending time abroad. Although a fully Managed Service has a cost this needs to be weighed against lost income from non-payment of rent and improved upkeep of your property. All agent fees can also be offset against the taxable income from your property. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

Money Matters Are you expecting to be paid a
final salary pension in the future? With Michael Powell Final salary pension schemes, or defined benefit pensions as they are also called, are by far the best type of pension to have. The amount of pension will be dependent on several factors such as the scheme’s accrual rate; 1/60th is an example. This means for each year you are in the scheme you accrue 1/60th of your final salary as a pension. If you worked for a company for 30 years, you would have accrued 30/60ths or 50% of your final salary as a pension. There are other factors such as definitions of pensionable & final salary, all of which can vary from scheme to scheme. An employer could fail but if the pension is sufficiently funded it is unlikely there would be an impact to the pension and its members. If, however, the scheme was not sufficiently funded there is a safety net in the form of the Pension Protection Fund (PPF). This was set up specifically to protect members from a corporate
10 | Fleet Life May/June 2021
failure and where the pension is not sufficiently funded. The PPF is a very good scheme but the protection it provides generally means your pension will be at a lower level. Some of the main points are as follows: • On your death any surviving dependant’s pension will be lower than the Scheme would pay. • Your pension income from Retirement Age may never rise in payment. • If your forecast pension income at age 60 is more than £35,000 or £42,000 at age 65 you will lose more than any other members if your Scheme moves into the PPF. If you have reached the scheme’s retirement age on the day before the assessment date for entering the PPF – Your pension will not be reduced regardless of whether it is being paid or not. However, any pension accrued prior to the 5th April 1997 will no longer increase each year. Any pension accrued after this date will increase by CPI up to a maximum of 2.50%. This is likely to be lower than the increases the scheme was paying. If you are under the scheme retirement age on the day before assessment date for entering the
PPF – You will receive 90% of your pension subject to a compensation cap. At age 65 it is £41,461 and reduces by age to £34,749 at age 60. If you have more than 21 years of membership in the scheme the cap is increased by 3.00% for every full year of service over 20 years. Clearly the failure of a company can have a significant impact on its employees’ pension entitlements, but thanks to the Pension Protection Fund the result is not complete ruin. More information about the PPF can be found at www.ppf.co.uk Any reader interested in discussing this topic further can telephone myself, Michael Powell, on 01252 960 550 or email info@kirkrice.co.uk Please note answers given are for general guidance only and specific advice should be taken before acting on any of the suggestions made.

Welcome to this month’s column helping you to revitalise your life! Since we were last in touch, a lot has surfaced. There’s a big shift happening for women now and it has been building for some time. The earth and us, as a part of it, are going through a great healing. The negativity, fear and anger has been surfacing and light has been shone upon darkness, secrets and untruths. Whether you’re a man or a woman, you will have felt the effects of this feminine energy rising and I’m sure you have journeyed through a lot of your own realisations, revelations, pain and letting go of old stuff – emotionally and physically. Whether you’re in business yourself or working in paid employment, there has been much to surface there too. The model of focusing on money and profit, especially ahead of people, is falling apart. And it is the overbearing masculine energy surrounding that model that is also falling away. I think it has been for years to be honest, but the strength of that change can really be felt now. However, there is a hangover from that masculine energy, I recognised it in myself as a corporate hangover. I spent 20 years in the corporate world and developed coping strategies and embodied masculine energy to survive in an environment that did not value feminine energies, as they were viewed as weak. But I still carried the fear energy and decision making through logic and linear thinking into my business when I started it 5 years ago. I had to learn to listen to and trust my heart again.
14 | Fleet Life May/June 2021
Revitalise Your Life By Jen Thomas, Intuitive Coach & TEDx Speaker at Revitalise Coaching
5 Signs a Corporate Hangover Might be Holding you Back So how is this corporate hangover showing up for you? 1. Relying on logic and what you think you should do rather than listening to your gut. Believing your job is right for you because it’s the one you think you should have and because it’s the one you believe you need to earn enough money. It’s a belief system associated with the corporate hangover and it’s not true. What’s in your heart is the only truth. And that is whatever lights you up! 2. Seeing only lack and scarcity. You believe you need to work faster, harder and smarter ALL THE TIME. It forces you (at speed!) away from love energy. Away from your heart; your truth. If you’re not feeling stressed and running on adrenaline, then you can’t be successful. It is a belief system the masculine energy embodied, but it is not true. There is so much abundance around us! 3. Needing external approval. Our lack of self-love keeps us feeling isolated and this is perpetuated by linear thinking and hierarchy. When we listen to our heart, we are connected to love energies and this allows feelings of oneness and belonging. In this place, there is love, community,
inclusion, compassion, kindness, excitement, happiness, support. 4. Staying small and invisible. If you’re a woman, you’ve likely experienced being belittled, humiliated, spoken down to, spoken to and touched inappropriately, dismissed and kept down. Like many, you chose the path of least resistance, chose to make yourself smaller, less visible, dimmed your light. Chose to protect yourself. Now is the time for you to shine bright and to be truly you! 5. Decision-making from a place of worry. Fear based decisions so often don’t lead to a good place. Those decisions feel heavy and stressful. But when we make decisions from a place of love, they feel good and provide you with a sense of reassurance and peace. So, from a place of love, fun and excitement what do your next actions look like? Take care,

Time Travelling for Education What would you do if you could travel into the future or at least know what the future held? Perhaps you would check out the Lottery numbers for next month, find out exactly what was wrong with the car before putting it in to be repaired or check nobody at the dinner dance next week was wearing the same dress? Having the power to see into the future certainly has its merits. Schools are preparing children for a future we cannot imagine. Taking a look at the pace of technological change in recent years, which has been exponential, demonstrates a world which refuses to pause. Children today will find the future to be internationally competitive. Whether they meet this in the workplace or simply in their day-to-day lives, they will need to have the skills to address whatever comes their way. At Yateley Manor School we are acutely aware of the need to provide a holistic education for children, one which does not merely focus on the traditional subjects. Subjects such as English
18 | Fleet Life May/June 2021
and Mathematics are vital in forming the foundations for children to progress through the current education system in the UK but their education needs to prepare them for successful adult lives. This should include opportunities for sport and physical activity, for drama, music, technology, cookery, textiles, languages and design. In short, an excellent education for children today will provide them with the chance to find their strengths and passions, to find skills that build their confidence, because confidence is an attribute that can help towards success in so many aspects of their lives. An education which fails to focus on areas such as leadership, communication, collaboration and independence is not one that is meeting the demands of a future world. At Yateley Manor children are aware of their development in these areas of their education. They know what makes a great team and how they can play their part in it. They learn the skills of being an effective leader but also how to ‘stick’ at something
they are tackling independently rather than simply giving up. Communication in the future could take on various forms but the ability to speak to various audiences is still an important element of the curriculum at Yateley Manor. With so many opportunities and a strong focus on personal development, it is essential children feel emotionally safe, to feel they can try and make mistakes if necessary. When children start their journey at Yateley Manor they are joining a family, one that supports and nurtures them, where the sense of family is tangible and more importantly is effective in providing the best start for every child’s future. We cannot see the future but we know what will be important to be successful. Why not make an appointment to view the school and see what the future could hold for your child?

We served our country, now we serve our Community Tim Corry and Alex Duncan have a strong bond and shared belief in doing work that gives-back to their community. Both served as pilots in the Royal Air Force and commercial aviation. But the 2020 pandemic has made them think again and seek a new direction to set up their Guardian Angel Carers Home Care Farnham branch. “Having served in the RAF as a pilot in the past, I realised I still wanted to serve the community, especially in time of crisis. Assisting my neighbour made me realise that I could do so much more and started to look into Care.” says Tim. “The first lockdown was such a change of mindset,” adds Alex, who rapidly found himself supporting his shielding, elderly neighbours. “I quickly realised that there was a huge requirement for help”. Both felt that they could do that on a ‘bigger scale’ and start a new, more personally rewarding, career in domiciliary care. With Guardian Angel Carers’ support and structure, they felt they could transfer their managerial skills in highly regulated environments learnt from aviation into home care. They made the decision to join Guardian Angel Carers because

the company’s “ethos and spirit of compassion, together with their warm familial feel, really chimed with me,” says Tim.

May 2021 is the start of a new journey as they open their new Home Care Farnham branch – operating from its new premises in Crondall. They will offer services from a ‘little extra help’ about the house to full-time live-in care, for people residing in the Farnham, Fleet, Farnborough and surrounding communities. Both have witnessed loved family members experience a mixed standard of care in the past. It is something that also moved the business partners to get behind the positive role Home Care can play.
remove the stigma sometimes associated with domiciliary care, especially for the client receiving to be at crisis point to receive care. It can start with purely social calls and some slight help around the house, a few times a week”. This makes the transition to increase support, when required, seamless and stressless as the client is already on the “care pathway”. Tim and Alex served their country on several operational tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Alex receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Force Cross for his service during those. It’s fundamental to who they are and how they work. As they look to the future, both state, “During our time at RAF Odiham, our local community always showed incredible support to both of us. We still feel incredibly indebted. We now look forward to being able to give back this support where it is needed.”

City breaks
with a difference We’ve all enjoyed a break in European cities over the years. But if you’ve visited Paris, Amsterdam or Rome and want a change, then I’ve got some great alternatives for you.
Eastern European and Baltic cities are perfect for a short break. Tallinn is a lovely medieval city on the Gulf of Finland – the capital of Estonia is becoming increasingly popular for visitors. The Old Town features not just beautiful architecture but locals dressed in medieval clothing. Take a trip to the Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform for some fantastic views over the city.
Gdansk in Poland is a city founded over 1000 years ago, but didn’t become well-known until the 1980s Solidarity Movement brought it to the fore. The city has numerous museums and churches and is definitely worth a visit. The capital of Georgia is Tbilisi, a compact country full of mountains, valleys and vineyards. In Tbilisi itself, you
can visit Orthodox churches, medieval fortresses and Soviet-era buildings. Georgian food and wine is delicious, probably not as well-known as it deserves. The city offers a wide range of wine bars and restaurants where you can try it out. The flights are longer, so take a few days extra here. Spain is famous for its beaches and longer holidays, but there are wonderful cities that are ideal for a short break. Lesser-known cities include Toledo, Avila, Segovia and Salamanca. They are located in Castille, a historic kingdom, and easy to reach from Madrid – very practical to stay in the capital and then one of these cities as a twin centre. The cities are medieval but vibrant, with delicious food and wine. Think more Don Quixote than Dali for the culture! If you love Italy, there are so many cities to discover. However down in the boot of Italy, you’ll find Puglia. The area is famous for the trulli – white-washed round houses with conical roofs. However, there are also lovely towns to visit, such
as Otranto – rich in wine and olive growing. Ostuni is a town built over a few hills, with houses tumbling together and known as the White City, with all the whitewashed buildings.
Flight times All are direct flights, unless indicated London to Tallinn – 2 hours, 45 mins London to Gdansk – 2 hours, 5 mins London to Tbilisi – indirect fight, 6 hours, 30 mins London to Madrid – 2 hours, 20 mins London to Bari (for Puglia) – 2 hours, 40 mins

New Loyalty Scheme
for Fleet launched to support
economic recovery as businesses prepare to re-open The Fleet Business Improvement District (BID) has introduced a new loyalty scheme for Fleet, MiRewards, designed to support economic recovery as businesses prepare to re-open. MiRewards rewards shoppers for supporting local businesses. Every time someone spends £10 with a participating business they earn points to be entered into a monthly prize draw to win prizes. The monthly prize draw for April will be £100 voucher for the winner to spend at a participating restaurant in Fleet. The scheme has been funded by the Fleet Business Improvement District and is free for businesses and shoppers. It takes just two minutes to sign up and shoppers don’t need to carry any additional loyalty cards or download an app as the scheme turns their credit or debit card into a loyalty card. With 78 businesses registered to take part from independent boutiques to restaurants, cafes and garages, whether you want
some sewing thread or a new kitchen, you’ll be rewarded when you shop in Fleet. Bruce Bulgin, Chair of the Fleet Business Improvement District explains why the scheme has been launched by Fleet BID “We know that more people are shopping online, but also that people want to support their local shops and businesses. We have introduced this new loyalty programme to reward people for shopping in Fleet. 2021 will be a critical time for many of our high street businesses so this is a great opportunity for people to shop in Fleet, support our local retailers and have the chance to win fantastic prizes.”
How it works It takes just 2 minutes to set up an account. Once you’ve registered,
Shoppers in Fleet are rewarded for shopping locally at over 75 businesses in Fleet including zero waste shop, Scoop. there’s no need to show a separate loyalty card. Sign up. Register and link your existing Visa or Mastercard debit or credit cards to your Mi Rewards account. It works with any bank. Spend. Every time you spend £10 with a participating business you will automatically earn competition entries. No need to show a separate loyalty card. Win fantastic monthly prizes from local businesses. Faith made Simple The way to find out if you really understand something is to try to explain it to a six year old. For me this happened the other day when I was on a Zoom call with twenty Beavers talking to them about the meaning of Easter. They discovered me when they looked round at the world and thought it

I know he doesn’t usually write letters, so I have to do the best I can on his behalf. Lots of love from me too. + Archbishop Rowan. I like that. Simple. Clear. Profound. Rev Patrick Butler

Rosie’s Good Reads Tokyo Mayday by Maison Urwin is a near future story set in the 2050s. Climate change, political/civil unrest and technological advancement have turned the US and the European states into third world countries, with poverty and lack of jobs. The world’s greatest superpower is now Japan. The author is well-versed in Japanese culture; the detail provided by his insight is an added point of interest while reading this highly original and probably plausible look at the future. Not Cool: Europe By Train In A Heatwave by Jules Brown is a travel guide. This is about his journey through nine European countries in nine days during the summer of 2019. He travelled through Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Italy. The book contained a sprinkling of travel tips which added to the delight of the rail trips; I can almost see the appeal of Interrailing. The Secret Life Of Albert Entwistle by Matt Cain is the story of a postman and his search for the one person he loved and lost. This is an easy read which flows from the page and is sprinkled with just the right amount of
36 | Fleet Life May/June 2021
Northern dialect to make the characters feel genuine. A lovely, leisurely read for those who enjoy stories which focus on older characters. Lost Children by Willa Bergman is an art themed thriller. A celebrated painting, the Portrait of the Lost Child, has been missing for over a decade. Eloise Witcham is commissioned to find it, but if she does, she will have to confront a past she thought long behind her and face up to the dark fears that still haunt her dreams. Black Irish Blues by Andrew Cotto is a noir mystery novella set in New Jersey. The story centres around blasts from the past, friends reunited, mysterious disappearances and the local gangsters. Written in the first person, much of the narrative details Caesar’s observations about small town life and his impressions of the town and people in which and with whom he grew up. A real page-turner; the writing itself is as good as that of any classic American novel.
