Hello... ...and welcome to our December issue! It’s been a rollercoaster of a year and I can’t quite believe this is the final Elvetham Heath Life issue ever! It’s been a year of change and compromise, it’s challenged our mental wellbeing and our values but we’d like to think it’s also brought us closer together in our local communities. We’ve been listening to feedback from you, our readers and our advertisers, and have looked at how we can adapt to these changing times as well as bringing a bigger range of advertisers into your homes. Drum roll, please… From 2021, we’re combining ehl and FL into one
bumper community magazine called Fleet Life which will be distributed to 10,000 homes in Elvetham Heath and Fleet. Each new Fleet Life magazine will be published 6 times a year and delivered to 5000 homes in month 1, and 5000 different homes in month 2 so you will still get all the content you are used to and more.

Hello December! How to Feel Glamourous this Christmas… Hair – Experiment with braids, ponytails, buns, waves or sleek styles. Don’t go overboard go for casual sleek with a hint of elegance to make the best impression. Comfort is key – Remember the most important thing is to wear whatever makes you feel glamourous and comfortable!
Ok, so normally by this time we would all be planning our partywear and have lots in the diary, but this year its all a little bit different! But that’s no excuse not to get glammed up and enjoy the festive season. Whether its a small family dinner or a meeting a friend for a drink I’m going to make the most of it!
Leather, Velvet & Taffeta! Gorgeous textures and embellishments are key trends for this season, nothing new there but they are a great way to update your party look. The texture to be seen in this Christmas is velvet - and quite frankly I have a major crush. From jackets to dresses, skirts to trousers; velvet is the ultimate luxe fabric to take your outfit from drab to fab. Intensify the impact of velvet by getting yours in one of this season’s key colours (bright blue, green and red) and you’ll be ready to dazzle! Remember; there are different weights of velvet available, meaning some styles will be more fluid whilst others will be heavier and have more shaping to them. Select a weight of fabric that works with your body line and scale to balance your look. If you want to bring velvet into
your daytime look try a corduroy skirt or trousers, as this is a type of velvet too. Those of you who fall into the Dramatic or Romantic style personality category will have a ball with all the textures and embellishments on offer. If you want to toughen up the look of chiffon and taffeta try pairing an elegant skirt or leather biker jacket for a different take on party wear.
My Top Tips for Christmas Style! Plan Your Outfit – If your entertaining the last thing you want to be thinking about is what to wear, so plan your outfit the night before. Glitter & Sequins – Whether its glitter on your eyelids or a sequined skirt sparkle has the ultimate festive effect! Nothing will cheer you up more, plus if you wear sparkle on your top half it will reflect light onto your face and make you look younger!
Give the Gift of Style… ‘Me time’ has to be the ultimate gift for any women, so why not treat someone to the Gift of Style by purchasing a Gift Voucher. Introduce them to the world of colour, an image consultation or a personal shop! Voucher’s can be for a particular service or for a monetary amount. Vouchers will be valid for 12 months.
Keep Smiling Remember nothing kills a woman’s outfit like a bad attitude! Wear a big smile on your face no matter what and let the spirit of Christmas guide you through the day. Positivity is contagious – once you start feeling it, everyone will follow! Happy Christmas

investments?
Governments and Businesses throughout the world are frequently asked by investors how they are affecting the communities and environment through their activities; how they treat their workers and whether they have equality policies to name a few.
If you are wondering how to align your investments to your views on any of the above issues, then I am pleased to say there are tools that we can use to do this.
The United Nations has launched many global goals since it’s inception 75 years ago and now has set out Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 goals which are: 1. No Poverty 2. Zero Hunger 3. Good Health and Well-Being 4. Quality Education 5. Gender Equality 6. Clean Water and Sanitation 7. Affordable and Clean Energy 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth 9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
The UN goals give investors a framework of criteria to judge each investment they make. Many investment fund management groups have established funds on these and preceding UN criteria. These funds may perform differently to a non-screened investment fund as they often hold a much lower number of businesses. This could mean the fund is more volatile than a non-screened fund. In addition to investing the shares, an investor can also lend money to these businesses and government projects without those high levels of volatility. Together this can make for a good investment portfolio.
13. Climate Action
There are several funds with long term track records over more than ten years. Many funds have been established in the last three years in reaction to the demand from investors for a way to have a positive impact on the world through investing.

words capture all the Responsible Investment actions, and I suggest the following for further reading: https://sdgs.un.org/goals When you are ready to reinvigorate your investments in a responsible way, come and explore the options with us. We offer video meetings and have a secure Personal Finance portal to be able to share the research we carry out for you. If you wish we can also set up and manage portfolios to suit you with at least annual reviews so you always know what is changing and can make decisions as needed. Better Photography
with Kim
Hi, I’m Kim from Kim Byrne Photography and welcome to this series of Better Photography.
don’t press the shutter button without thinking about what you’re shooting.
Good Cameras Can Take Bad Photos I don’t know a single photographer that doesn’t wish they were a better, but that will only happen with practise. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard someone say, “I would love to be a better photographer… if only I had a better camera”. What many people are missing is it’s NOT the camera you use that will improve your photography, just as the car you drive won’t make you a better driver, or the kitchen you have won’t make you a better cook. It’s hard to admit we’re not good at something and it’s easy to blame it on the gear; usually the camera or lens. The problem with this way of thinking is that it won’t matter how expensive your camera is it won’t improve your photography! Only you can do that! How? Most of today’s digital cameras allow you to change the shutter speed and aperture setting. All
Here are a couple of simple tips.
you have to do is learn how to use them. Something that is often overlooked is the cameras manual, have you read yours? You will find instructions how to operate the main settings but unfortunately it may not explain how to use them creatively. Don’t worry we’ve got you covered, if you go to the Fleet Life website and read the back issues, you’ll find several articles to help your understanding and get you started. There are also courses, workshops, books etc. that will also help you learn. But before you spend good money on any of these make sure it is about taking better photos not fixing them on a computer. You can learn a lot by learning to look at the scene so please
If you want to photograph a mountain try looking at the scene creatively. Stand back and see what else could be in the photo that will add interested e.g. if you choose a different shooting position is there a stream or a path you could include that leads your eye to the mountain. What about looking to see if you can frame your subject with some branches from a tree. There is generally an alternative to just snapping the most obvious shot. If you’re shooting people or animals think about placing them off to one side looking into the centre of the frame rather than placing them directly in the centre of the frame. My point is you can become a better photographer by concentrating on the creative/ artistic side of photography rather than just the technical gear. Buying a better camera isn’t going to help you take better photos if you keep taking snaps. So, here’s my advice; don’t replace your camera just yet just learn how to use the one you have and think like a photograher not a snapper. You can take better photos with a bit of knowledge and practice. Now, if only I had… Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to everyone. xx

An exciting start to Year Four! The children in Year Four have enjoyed travelling the world from their classrooms! Before half term, we had a speaker come in to talk about her trip to Antarctica so we could learn about what it was like to go there. This enriched our cross-curricular topic on Polar Survival, which also involved us thinking about the geography of Arctic and Antarctic regions, including how different life would be for people there. Our English lessons were based around the story of one of Shackleton’s incredible expeditions and we went back in time to travel with him on his journey, writing diary entries along the way.

We have had some other exciting opportunities this term, including an Eco coding workshop which developed our understanding of the coding we did in computing this term. As well as this, we had a musical visitor come in to teach us body percussion, which was an enjoyable addition to our Music lessons. We have also had the opportunity to dress up, coming into school before half term in our spooky costumes and Autumn colours.

Throughout the 1st lockdown, through the summer and into the 2nd lockdown Honey Lettings have been working hard. We have maintained tenants in properties, handled tenants move in and out and managed the payment of rents. The government have provided furlough schemes, grants and loans to keep things going but one thing that hasn’t changed is the landlord’s obligations and red tape. The media reported that Landlords would be eligible for payment holidays and a few tenants felt that this should be passed on. Many landlords do not have mortgages and the rental property may be part of their retirement income. For those with mortgages an application for a payment holiday could put a black mark their credit history. The few tenants that requested rent reductions, when checked, were still receiving 100% of their income but some lost overtime and bonuses. Although the press has reported high rates of rent arrears nationally we have maintained rent arrears to less than 1% of our managed properties. If we were to find tenants struggling we could negotiate a payment plan and hopefully avoid costly court action. The Coronavirus Act 2020 requires landlords to extend the period of notice they must give a tenant from 2 months to 6 months. Through negotiation, Honey Lettings have managed the transition of properties without the need to take legal action saving landlords costs and lost rental income. The Courts have a huge backlog of cases and any action would be delayed significantly so it is best to avoid this route. The sales market has been very active and the chancellor’s removal of stamp duty until March 2021 has encouraged many to put their properties on the market. Although some landlords have taken the opportunity to sell up others are choosing to invest. We have seen an increase in rental enquiries for larger family homes from those moving out from London and if you are thinking of renting please, give Honey Lettings a call. During this difficult period the government have made lots of concessions but none to the ever-increasing red tape involved in letting a property. Gas and EICR, electrical safety certificates are still a legal requirement but this can clash with tenants not wishing to provide access. It is important to be able to provide evidence if access is denied as this will help protect the Landlord. The landlord still has a responsibility to maintain the property and we liaise with contractors including plumbers, heating engineers, electricians and roofing contractors who have all provided essential service throughout this difficult period, hats off to these guys. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

Today I want to share some thoughts around the energy of fear. We’ve all seen the news on the TV, on our social media feeds, the radio and via several other mediums. The power of the media to fuel the masses with a way to think and feel is phenomenal. I stopped watching the news more than 5 years ago, initially to manage panic attacks I was experiencing. I stopped listening to the news on the radio and I stopped listening to stations or podcasts with adverts as I noticed how increasingly anxious I was feeling. What I’ve noticed over those 5 years, apart from feeling much calmer and more grounded, is that it created head space for me. Space to think freely and recognise what my own thoughts and opinions were, rather than what I was being led to think about or feel. Combined with mindful practices, I’ve also noticed how I can witness and observe sensationalism and fear rather than getting drawn into it. I’m not suggesting not having any input from the news as there’s important information to know and understand. What I am advocating, is to choose when you are exposed to news information and how often. Keeping things in perspective and staying calm can be challenging, especially when it seems like the world around you is out of control, but please know that you are always in charge of you and your own thoughts and feelings. Here are a couple of my favourite tools to help you stay grounded and feel in control.

Revitalise Your Life By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker & Coach at Revitalise Coaching
Welcome to December’s column helping you to revitalise your life! • Write down your best case scenario for a particular outcome e.g. a happy and enjoyable Christmas Day. Forget about whether you think it’s possible or not and how on earth it could happen lol. Just keep your thoughts focused on what you would like to see, hear and feel in an ideal world. Your mind will naturally fall into thought patterns of ‘what if…’ and ‘but…’ so just acknowledge them as they come up and then move forward onto your happy outcome. Read this and even re-write this list every day for 7 days and notice how you feel. • Meditate for 10 minutes (or longer if you can). Put some nice music on (loads available for free on the Calm app) and find a quiet space. If you’re visual, like me, take yourself on a mental walk through the forest, on the beach, floating down the river or wherever feels good for you. As you breathe in, visualise white light filling up your head and as you breathe out, visualise this light travelling down your throat, shoulders,
torso, stomach, hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles and feet. Repeat this process for as long as you like. • My go to is always a walk in nature (even when it’s raining!) so if you can get outside to some green space, take a stroll and really take in what’s going on with the trees, birds, squirrels, leaves etc. Be kind and compassionate towards yourself – speak to yourself and treat yourself as you would your best friend. Ultimately, love is the antidote to all fear energies, so focus on that feeling. We can only feel one emotion at a time, even if it does feel like a bit of a rollercoaster, it is just one at a time. As Kyle Gray says, “wherever love is present, fear is a stranger.” So, get focused on your best case scenario, allow yourself to feel the love and be loved. Wishing you a loving & magical Christmas,

ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.
Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.

Make Your Own! One of the quickest and easiest ways I have found to ensure that I am living as close to zero waste as possible is to make my own. Way back, this is what everyone did. If you wanted something, it had to be made. I can hear cries of ‘urgh no! I hate cooking’ or ‘the last time I sewed anything was secondary school’. Well, it’s never too late to learn and I say that through experience we gain confidence, a great sense of well-being and achievement, a huge saving on the pocket and skill sets that we can share and enjoy with others. Since trying to live more sustainably, I have learnt so many skills and, seeing as my journey to zero waste all started with the realisation that we were scrubbing our faces with plastic particles, cosmetics were my first port of call. Rather than listening to the companies trying to sell me highly expensive products filled with unnecessary chemicals, I embarked on a natural skincare regime. After all, it can take just 26 seconds for chemicals put on our skin to enter our bloodstream. (Try it: put peppermint oil on your feet and wait 30 minutes – then ask a friend to smell your breath!). Before embarking on these: please do your research in terms of essential oils – we favour DoTerra oils as they are 100% what they say they are. Face Scrub – Baking soda, Frankincense oil and Lavender oil for oily skin OR yogurt with
either oats or sugar mixed in for dryer skin. Moisturiser / Face Mask – Mash an old banana and apply to your face, leave for up to 20 minutes and wash off. Add yogurt, honey (good for acne) or essential oils suited for your skin for added benefits. Add lemon juice to honey and use as a mask (for blackheads) Toner – 1tbs apple cider vinegar in 300ml of water works wonders. Bath – Pop oats in a little mesh bag and hang over the tap as you run the water. Amazing for eczema prone skin – including for children. There are so many versions of these to try! After a while, I moved into food. I started by making my bread – even once a week is better than buying it in a plastic bag all the time and its healthier. This was followed by finding recipes for crumpets, wraps, flat bread, pitas,
crackers and naan etc. They’re all so much tastier that I don’t buy them anymore – I simply make a batch and freeze for when I need them. The same goes for sauces. Homemade sauces tend to use less sugar and salt, no preservatives or colouring and tend to be cheaper. There are SO many recipes on line. When you’re feeling more confident, you’ll be able to ditch the ready meals altogether and slowly start exploring the versatility of beans and lentils! Freeze what’s left for another meal or throw it in a soup! As you advance, foraging is free, easy and incredibly tasty. It means eating seasonally to help with carbon footprint and is how nature always intended to provide for us. More recently, I have been venturing into sewn homemade gifts. They’re always gratefully received. Book pocket pillows, remote control tidies, hair accessories organisers, scrunchies, clothes, book marks etc can all make incredible gifts, really aren’t as complicated as they sound and give you some you time while you learn a new skill. They’re also skills we can pass to the next generation. Extra points for using preloved material, old clothes and second hand bedding! What will you try first?

Win an hour and a half of Pure Relaxation in my Prize Draw! Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing Welcome to my December column! There is light in this doom and gloom. I thought would spread the love this month and offer you the chance to win one of my favourite and most luxurious treatments – my ‘Pure Heaven Facial’. This gorgeous treatment includes a cleansing back exfoliation, a divine back massage, and a Natura Bisse Vitamin C facial, incorporating a neck, shoulder and head massage, worth £110.00. All you have to do is purchase a Queen Bee in the Woods Gift Voucher for £30.00 or more for yourself or a loved one, to be entered into the draw. The winner will be notified on 24th December, so you could receive an extra Christmas present! Due to the circumstances, the vouchers will be valid for 6 months. I can email them to you, however, vouchers are usually beautifully presented in individual boxes, dressed with a ribbon, and can be posted if you would like them presented in this way. There will be an additional £3.00 P&P charge for this service. Call me on 01252 781077 or email – carol@queenbeespasupplies. co.uk for details. Card payments are welcome. December is the month for giving, but money is going to be tighter this year, so it might be time to get creative. Last year, I made all of my own Christmas crackers. I loved making them! Simply go onto www.youtube.com and search for how to make Christmas crackers. There are loads of ideas and they are really easy. Then
you can choose your gifts. Beauty products like nail varnishes, hand creams, and nail files make perfect cracker gifts for the girls. Try spirit miniatures for the guys; just make sure the crackers are strong enough to hold a small bottle. The snaps and party hats are easily available online. Then I added a scratch card for a bit of fun. We one £10.00 last year! If you are handy in the kitchen, make batches of biscuits, chocolate brownies, rum truffles, and present them in pretty boxes, or your Christmas crackers. I think your friends will really appreciate a homemade gift, especially if you don’t normally do that sort of thing. I have also made a Christmas wreath for the last few years. As we are being encouraged to go out walking, you may be able to
collect some holly or other winter foliage to make your own wreath. Much cheaper than buying one and more fun. And don’t forget important Christmas selfcare either! If your local beauty salon is still closed, give yourself a good body scrub in the shower, apply some selftan, the daily moisturiser ones are best, paint your toes and fingers, apply a bit of shimmer to your shoulders and cheeks, put on your little black dress and sparkle!! Our Christmas party is cancelled, so we are all dressing up for a Zoom party. Where there is a will, there is a way!! Enjoy your Christmas and see you in January. Love

Rosie’s Good Reads Gentleman Jim by Mimi Matthews is an historical romance. Maggie Honeywell, the only child of Squire Honeywell was raised more as a son and heir than a daughter. This is a tale of romance, drama and revenge, with lots of wonderfully described detail, in keeping with the culture and etiquette of the period. Breaking point by John Rhodes is a World-War-Two tale set during the Battle Of Britain. The story alternates between Johnnie, a spitfire pilot who is in the middle of the conflict, and Eleanor, a talented mathematician. She uses a theorem to help the RAF maintain superiority during the days surrounding the fight, when the odds look as if they are against them. The Covenant by Thorne Moore is set in late 19th century Wales. This tale about the Owen family and their land begins with a mystery: the discovery of a body, declared to be that of Leah Owen, who happens to be the main character of the novel – but this is in no way a spoiler. If anything, it provided added intrigue to the story. 34 | ehl December 2020
Tru Blue by Melissa Foster is a contemporary romance and is book one of The Whiskeys: Dark Knights at Peaceful Harbor series. This is the story of mechanic Truman Gritt, who went to prison to save his brother; now, six months after his release, his brother needs him again. This is an uplifting romance with characters to fall in love with. The Starfolk Arcana by Martha Dunlop is fantasy. After years of hiding her psychic abilities, Beth meets Jonan – the man with the violet eyes – and starts to feel like she belongs for the first time. Jonan has waited lifetimes to be with the woman who haunts his dreams. A beautiful, mystical, and engaging novel.
