Wellesley Life meets... Gigi Harold, Principal at the Paris School of Dancing in Aldershot. Please tell us a bit about who you are and what you do? My name is Gigi and I teach ballet, tap, musical theatre and acting to both children and adults. Please tell us about your background… I began dancing aged four at the Paris School of Dancing my mother’s school. I took my teaching diplomas at 18 and then left to sing and dance overseas. In my career, I have lived and worked in 28 countries, not including three world cruises and numerous Caribbean and European cruises. Have you always loved dancing/performing? I have loved performing ever since I was a young child. When I was five I did numerous adverts for TV, including Campbell’s Soup, Persil and even a road safety commercial with “Batman” Adam West. At aged nine, I was in a British short film called “The day of rest” as the central character, Tina. Having travelled extensively in my career, being back in the UK allowed my songwriting to flourish into three released albums and several singles, all available on Spotify etc. Please tell us a bit about the school - its history, how it began, how it has developed over the years, what you offer and to who etc. The school was started by my mother, Thelma Town-Clear, in 1947. As a child, with her brother, she entertained the troops during the war by singing and dancing. Later, obtaining her teaching diplomas, she started the dancing school. Subsequently, she attained the highest honours possible at

the ISTD and IDTA as an examiner and a fellow. The school has produced numerous teachers and professional dancers, notably Jenny Agutter. We offer classes for children and adults in ballet, tap, musical theatre and acting. How did you come to be Principal at the School? It was a natural progression to take over mum’s dancing school but sadly it happened under traumatic circumstances when she got cancer. How has Covid-19 affected your business? Like many businesses, Coronavirus has hit us very hard, keeping us out of the studio and forcing us to keep up the practise online. I am so proud of the pupils that stayed and tried because in these extraordinary times they took their exams at the earliest opportunity in October and passed with amazing results. Out of 100% successful, 80% received honours and distinction. We were also one of the first schools to enter a candidate in the new IDTA acting awards and they attained honours (91). The highest mark of the day was honours (95) to one of our adult tap dancers.

Zoom classes at a dance school pro’s and cons of these? There is no denying that online classes can be quite challenging for young children but when the first lockdown happened in March, I jumped straight onto that platform so they could still have some sense of normality. They loved seeing their little friends smiling back at them. Your hopes and plans for 2021? Next year, I hope to rebuild the school and continue my mum’s legacy by delivering quality training at affordable prices for local families. Any advice for budding young dancers or performers? “Practise really does make perfect.” “Always show up and leave a little sparkle wherever you go.” “Don’t just do the moves, feel the moves.” What’s the one thing you love about living in Aldershot? It’s home and that will never change! What would you do to improve or change Aldershot? I feel very sad at the demise of our local retail shops - Aldershot used to be a wonderful little shopping town. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? There is no such thing as failure, just another chance to learn.

Achievable New Year Resolutions for a Healthy and Happy Year Improve your finances in 2021 If your income has stayed the same during 2020 you may have

y

saved money during the lockdown. So, now is the time to boost your savings or plan for the future. If finances have been tight, then make a goal and tackle debt head-on. Either way, make this the year you sort your finances out.

Drink less alcohol At home drinking increased in 2020 but with pubs shut and socialising restricted, we still consumed less alcohol overall. So, if it was a boozy year for you or a more sober experience, make a commitment to drink less this year and have deeper sleep, a brighter mood, more energy and better skin.

Volunteer 2020 has seen communities pull together and more people are volunteering now than ever, especially among younger age groups. So, join the trend and volunteer at one of the many local charities in the area. Research shows that it builds self-confidence, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and anxiety and gives a sense of purpose.

Take more walks Guidelines suggest we should be taking 10,000 steps each day, the equivalent of walking between 5-6 miles. And walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise; it’s free and comes with a host of benefits, especially if we can walk in nature. So, lace up and reap the rewards such as reducing the risk of dementia increasing weight loss and improving mental health.

Eat veggies regularly Of course! But what is also

essential is variety. Plants all contain antinutrients; toxins which act as a form of defence, because unlike animals, plants cannot run away from their predators! These antinutrients, if eaten in large quantities, will make the predator unwell, encouraging consumption of a different plant instead. y For Nutritional Therapy and NLP Coaching visit www.andreabremner.co.uk or call Andrea on 07721 881021

Learn a new skill Mental exercise is key to keeping your mind sharp and when we learn a new skill the benefits go way beyond the actual skill learned. So, adopt a continuous learning mentality in 2021 and see benefits such as reduced risk of dementia, increased learning speed, better employment opportunities and an increased ability to adapt to change – something we all needed in 2020!

Do more for the environment Would you like to live greener this year? Start small and lots of small steps add up: try walking instead of driving, signing up to an eco-energy tariff, re-using and re-filling or just using your recycling bins properly. One step is investing in cleaning products that let you clean your house just using water! y ENJO UK with Helen Wray –

Cleaning the World one Home at a time. 07886 587850 helen.wray@uk.enjo.com

Practice self-compassion Responding to our faults, mistakes and misfortunes with kindness, caring and understanding rather than self-pity or judgement can be a challenge. But practices like meditation can help re-wire the brain so that it becomes more natural. Make self-compassion a new year’s resolution and expect to see an increase in happiness, healthier body image, more resilience and better mental health.

Keep clutter out of the kitchen My top tip for having a clutter free kitchen is to have your worktops as clear as possible. Worktops are ‘clutter magnets’ for post, keys, and other non-kitchen related items. Have a system in place to stop the build up. Also, only have out appliances which are used regularly. y For help with decluttering and organising your home, visit www. yourorganisedhome.co.uk or contact Victoria on 07905 453268. Follow yourorganisedhomeltd on Facebook and Instagram.

Switch up your exercise routine We can all get stuck in a rut doing the same workout week in week out, but your body and your brain will reap the rewards if you switch up your routine. So, try rock climbing, weight- lifting, Pilates, Tai Chi, swimming etc and stimulate different muscle groups, relieve pressure on joints from over-use, prevent boredom and meet new people.

‘Being there - being present’ When things are tough, friends/loved ones often say – ‘I will be there for you.’ It can be comforting to hear these reassuring words. But despite all the good intensions, do they always show up in the way we need them too? This question led me to consider, what it is to ‘show up’ or be present for oneself or someone else- to ponder about the impact and what it might mean to be present for someone. We can all have an off day, where our mind is elsewhere, and we are perhaps somewhat distracted by our inner world – thoughts, worries, feelings, and indeed feelings of uncertainty. I suspect there have been plenty of moments like these recently with the massive pressures of the pandemic. I have frequently wondered about the impact of my ‘off’-days on others, especially when my children were small, and life was very hectic. Compassion empathy and understanding are beneficial

and healing, so I forgive myself for being distracted. These days I endeavour to mitigate against obstacles that will prevent me being present.

What helps? I find that being physically prepared for the day is a great start I know it sounds dull. It helps me to know that the things I can influence have been taken care of, there are less things to worry about therefore stress is reduced, cortisone and adrenaline levels are not elevated due to lack of preparation. It is not uncommon for people to have daily rituals or routines that help us feel set up for the day. Perhaps consider this – is what you are doing ‘helpful or harmful for yourself’? Are there some rituals or habits that are now inadvertently adding to stress or have become unhelpful to yourself or other people? January is the time of year when we are drawn, (possibly reluctantly) to consider if there are new goals, aims or new behaviours we would like to adopt. e.g. – January in the gym with new exercisers in new exercise kit. It could be part of your Self-Care to consider introducing a new healthy habit. James Clear author

14 | Wellesley Life January/February 2021

of Atomic Habits describes The habit loop which has 4 phases:

Cue Craving Response Reward Cue – Make the good habit obvious for yourself e.g. I will walk 30 minutes per day. Craving – Make it as attractive as you can for yourself – e.g. walk with someone fun. Response – Make it easy – e.g. have your trainers/walking kit ready. Reward – make it satisfying – e.g. decide on a reward for achievement. It is now known that how we feel is significant to maintaining a change in behaviour. The implementation of a new habit is more likely to be successful if its linked to feeling positive. Celebrating and rewarding yourself positively influences motivation to maintain the new habit. ‘The recipe for success’ – making the new habit small, doable, with a trigger or prompt, followed by saying ‘job well done’ to create a feel good factor.

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley

E.I.C.R.

Electrical Installation Condition Report

01

252 622052

In July 2018 the government announced that they would introduce legislation to mandate private landlords to carry out inspections on their properties’ electrics every five years. The regulations will apply to all tenancies including renewels from 1st April 2021.

Failure to have an EICR in place when required can lead to a maximum fine of £30,000!

Unlike a gas safety certificate and EICR will take some time and will probably require follow up work to complete. As we get closer to the 1st of April 2021 there will be a high demand to get the work completed in order to meet the deadline. It is important that you book an electrician to carry out the EICR whilst appointsments remain available. The current COVID 19 pandemic has not altered the obligation or timing of this new requirement. The earlier lockdown and possible future lockdowns have and will delay access to properties and avilability of the electricians. These new regulations are part of the Government’s wider work to improve safety in all buildings. Electrical safety in rented properties is hugely important to tenants’ health and safety. Most landlords are highly responsible and will already have safe electrical installations but this needs to be checked and certified. Once landlords have an Electrical Installation Condition Report from a competent inspector showing their property has a clean bill of health, they won’t need to worry about it for another five years. If you have already had an inspection in the past 5 years there will be no requirement for to renew this until the 5-year period is over, though they will need to be able to provide the report when required. During the inspection the engineer will look at general wiring around the property. Poor DIY cabling and damaged switches and sockets will be highlighted. Older properties with the old fashioned wire fuses may need updating if they do not include an RCB breaker ( Residual Current Breaker ). Newer properties may also require updating as RCB’s were only initially used on sockets only and now need to be installed for all circuits including lighting. The engineer will remove 20% plus of socket face plates and light fittings to check the wiring. The engineer will also use equipment to test the earth connections and check that the sockets and lights have been wired correctly. If you intend to continue to rent your property you will need to carry out this process. If you currently have tenants and they are likely to remain until after 1st April 2021 then you will need to get this done. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. The Cambridge Primary School

Wellesley | Aldershot Poppy Appeal In November, the children took part in the ‘Poppy Run’ to help raise money for the Royal British Legion. With families of the Cambridge Primary School serving in the Armed Forces it was a lovely morning to help give back to those who have served and are currently serving to protect us. After visiting the Silent Soldier, at the front of our school, each class took turns to come down to the playground and run the poppy shaped course. All the children were so enthusiastic and full of energy, ready to go! Each class had 5 minutes to run around the course as many times as they could. Collectively the children ran 4 miles over 25 minutes and were amazing, being so

supportive and encouraging of each other. They all ran so well and had great fun running for such a great cause. The school also raised an extra proceeds with the sale of poppy appeal accessories. Our 150 children and families raised an incredible £700 collectively – a great effort!

Online Community Christmas Carol Service Last year, the Cambridge Primary School, alongside other local schools were invited to attend the Community Christmas Carol Service held at the St Andrew’s Church and the Garrison Church of St Michael and St George. This year due to COVID restrictions the carol service went online. Children from Year 2 pre-recorded the lovely carol “Away in a Manger” next to a very beautiful Christmas tree which was kindly donated by Grainger Plc. The recording was be broadcasted on Facebook, Youtube and other platforms that the Army media has links with.

Rosie’s Good Reads The Survivors by Jane Harper is a mystery set in Tasmania. Twelve years ago Kieran survived the night of a terrible storm when two others died trying to rescue him. When a waitress drowns under suspicious circumstances, the police investigation soon opens up some long buried secrets. Lady In Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown is an autobiography of Anne Glenconner, who was a Lady-In-Waiting to Princess Margaret. A very topical book with production of The Crown series currently on television, this was a fascinating window into the life of those surrounding the royal family. Writedown: Lockdown In The Galloway Glens At The Time of Covid by Margaret Elphinstone et al set between March 23rd and June 15th. This is a collection of diary entries which speak as Everyman, expressing our shared responses to unprecedented times. 20 | Wellesley Life January/February 2021

Unexpectedly Wed To The Officer by Jenni Fletcher is an historical romance set in Bath. Henrietta is the manager of Belles Biscuit Shop; late one evening she confronts a man she believes is a burglar. However, he turns out to be Sebastian Fortini, the shop owner’s son who has returned from years serving in the navy. One Month In Tohoku by Caroline Pover is an Englishwoman’s memoir about life after the 2011 Japanese Tsunami. This is the story of the people and the communities and how they rebuilt their lives; and it’s about the kindness in the world for complete strangers. I think anyone who has ever considered voluntary work would enjoy reading this.

Stay safe and protect your loved ones We hope that you and your families are continuing to stay safe. You can keep up-to-date with the latest coronavirus information for Aldershot and the rest of Hampshire, by going to www.hants.gov.uk/ coronavirus. One of the best ways to protect others is to get tested if you develop coronavirus symptoms, however mild they are. Symptoms are a high temperature; a new, continuous cough; or a loss or change to your sense of taste or smell. You can book a test online at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. The nearest coronavirus test centre is now open seven days a week at the Parsons Barracks car park in Ordnance Road, Aldershot, but you must book an appointment first.
