Holidays and Travel Living the zero waste life style may seem pretty tricky when you leave the comfort of your own surroundings where you know your routines, local shops and comfort zones. Lots of us are staying put right now, which is a very sensible move but some of us are braving foreign climes or even taking part in a staycation. If you haven’t yet booked but intend to, then a staycation is likely to be your greenest option in terms of travel and my goodness, we are incredibly lucky to have a vast array of incredible places to visit on our small island. The best way of staying in the right mindset on holiday is to be prepared and take with you what you’ll need to make sure that you don’t have to rely on there being local support for your journey. However, if you are staying in the UK, try searching thezerowastenetwork. com for zero waste shops close to your accommodation or perhaps try searching Ecosia if you’re abroad as more and more are springing up! For the bathroom, take a soap bar – there are some great travel soap bars which wash everything from your hair, to your dishes and even your laundry. This saves weight in the case and doesn’t take up much room! It can be helpful to take your own soap dish or travel tin too so you can make sure that it dries out between uses. Failing that, refill old travel sized bottles and remember that many products double up – shower gel is just as good at washing hands. Don’t
forget to use toothtabs and you can take plastic free toothpaste and pack your bamboo toothbrush (again, super lightweight). Other bits and pieces include your reusable face wipes, bamboo cotton buds and don’t forget your marine safe sun cream (really important!).

My mother has lived with Dementia since 2012 and I have watched her slowly disappear into a world of her own as the illness has stripped her cognitive function away piece-by-piece. As Bob Dylan sang “The Times They Are a-Changin’” and never more than now. Like all businesses we have wound our way through the challenges presented by the pandemic including the lock down and things are not all bad.

We had a good start to 2020 and the market for property lettings was buoyant. The sales market was also starting to take off after a long period of stagnation. By March we had achieved our highest figures for the month and then lock down started. How quickly things can change! We took the decision to stop marketing new properties or carrying out new viewings. With half of our team furloughed and the remainder of the team battled on whilst isolating in different locations. The properties let in February and March still needed to be completed and so we managed, carefully, the process of preparation and completions for the next two months. The maintenance and support of tenants and properties continued throughout the lock down as faults still arise. We carefully managed the rental income and we are pleased to say we had less than 1% arrears. From the first of June we restarted marketing of properties and business quickly returned. It felt like the cork had been pulled from a bottle and the new properties and prospective tenants burst out. By July we had all our staff back to work and we achieved another record-breaking month. In line with government advice we looked to minimise viewings by providing video tours of the properties and by carrying out extensive pre-vetting of tenants. We have found that the new system is far more efficient and exposes the property and pre-existing tenant to less foot fall. We have found a significant change in the type of properties requested. Any kind of private outside space adds greatly to the popularity of the property. Flats with no outside space which before lock down would have been easy to let are now slower to move. Being closer to the railway station appears to be less essential for the moment as commuting is put on the back burner. Larger traditional family homes with gardens have proved very popular with those who now see working from home as a possible longer-term solution. Pets have also become a more common request as people have sought comfort in a furry friend. Many landlords may not like the idea of a dog or cat but accepting an animal at the property may help to tie up a let. Hi, I’m Kim from Kim Byrne Photography and welcome to this series of Better Photography.

For this month I thought we’d look at colour in photography to balance last month’s B&W article. Using colour in photography isn’t as straight forward as you might imagine at first glance. For instance, did you know that warm colours e.g. yellow, red and orange are considered to be dominate colours in an image? Why, because they reach our eyes first, before the cooler colours. Cool colours are receding e.g. purple, green and blue. Colour is fun and vibrant which is why it’s often used on billboards for advertising. It’s also something we think about when decorating our homes. Generally, we choose cooler colours in bedrooms because we want them to be relaxing and warmer tones in our lounges making them welcoming. Think about how you can transfer

this thinking to your images to help relay a feeling or emotion. Using colour correctly helps to draw attention to your subject and is pleasing to the eye. To take a great colour image be intentional with your colour, think of it as important as your framing or composition. Remember if there are too many colours in your frame and they don’t follow any order the end result will be pretty disengaging. To take a great colour image be intentional with your colour. Less is often better! When we see things in real life our eye’s and brain filter out everything except what we are focusing on, this includes colour. This is how we can make sense of the world around us. However, with a photograph we as photographers are the filter, if the filter isn’t working the viewer will be confused and uninterested in the photograph. As I mentioned in last month’s article the question of whether your image should be colour or B&W can only be answered by you because you know what you want to express, and which does it better.

Before you take any images think about how colours work together. Experiment with different colour combinations, you can do this using the kids coloured t-shirts, coloured pencils, sheets of coloured paper or go outside and take a look at colours around you. Part 1 – If you’re not sure how colours work, have a look online for a Colour Wheel you’ll notice complimentary colours are opposite each other. Look at colours around your home and how they make you feel, which ones are you drawn too? Part 2 – So let’s grab our camera’s and have some fun with colour. If you prefer to stay at home grab three different coloured mugs from the cupboard place them in a triangle and photograph from above so you’re looking inside the mugs. Give each mug a third of the frame. Do you like the result, or do you need to change the colours? Now, think about what you want to photograph or take a walk down the high street and look for your next colour image. In summary, to take a great colour image be intentional with your colour! Don’t over think it and have fun.

Is it time for ME at last?
Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing I am hoping that by the time you read this, life is getting back to some kind of normality and the children are finally back at school. You may still be working from home but at least have some peace and quiet at last. These strange last few months have made us all re-assess our lives, and hopefully made us realise how precious time is, and how important it is to look after ourselves. I am fortunate that I have easy access to the woods, and from the beginning of lockdown, made the effort to get up nearly every morning to walk for an hour. Luckily we were blessed with the weather, which made this ritual an absolute pleasure. The joy of hearing the cuckoo, and the spectacle of the beautiful wild pink rhododendrons, during those Spring months, will stay with me forever. Now I am back at work, we are really trying to keep up this good habit, as it is so important. A surprising development from our daily walks was also to meet a new group of people, who we call our ‘forest friends’! They are of course, the dog walkers, and others like ourselves, trying to keep themselves sane and fit. I had a number of conversations in the woods exchanging sourdough bread making techniques! Bizzare!! My work in the salon is busy and gradually clients are starting to feel safe again. A strict regime of cleaning should be mandatory
in all salons. Fortunately, beauty therapists are taught about hygiene and sterilising techniques at college, so a salon should be a safe environment. PPE should be used in all hair and beauty salons, with either wipe down surfaces or disposable towels used at all times. For close work, therapists should be using a visor or face mask, and gloves and disposable aprons should be worn for all waxing treatments. My title says – Is it time for ME at last? I think it should be! Our wellbeing is so important, including our mental health, which lots of people have struggled with. My ‘Pure Heaven’ treatments are all about total relaxation, all designed by myself, and I am planning to introduce a new treatment which will include a guided meditation and then massage, to truly relax mind and body. I studied a diploma in Meditation during lockdown, which has been very
interesting, with the intention of using it in my treatments. A body massage or facial treatment, works on those tense, tight muscles of the neck and shoulders, which cause headaches. Just an hour of soft tissue manipulation really works wonders, and makes the world seem a better place! Head massage is often included too, which is really amazing. Those 2 seconds in the hairdresser when the conditioner goes on, just isn’t enough! Let’s try and keep hold of some of the good things we have learnt during lockdown, as we all have a different perspective of life now. Chat to you again next month! Love

Fleet Life meets... Victoria Ankers, mum-of-two and Professional Declutterer & Organiser of Your Organised Home Please tell us about your background – childhood, education etc. I grew up in Crowthorne with my parents and younger brother. I went to secondary school in Wokingham, before heading off to Farnborough 6th Form. I then studied for my Business Degree at Farnborough College which is where I met my husband. I’ve lived in Fleet for over 11 years. Please tell us about your career prior to starting your own business I previously worked for Marks & Spencer for over 12 years. I started in the homeware department in the Camberley store whilst I was studying, before joining Head Office in London as a Buying Assistant and then working my way up to a Merchandiser. I adored the mix of sourcing and range building clothing and homeware products and built great relationships with suppliers and stores. When and why did you decide to start Your Organised Home? I’ve been following several home organiser social media accounts since last year and quickly began to realise this is what I wanted to do. I knew it was a job I could do well as I’m able to transfer the skillset I’ve gained through my retail and voluntary experience. I also understand how overwhelming homes can sometimes get and wanted to help others with this. I did lots of research into the home organising industry, became a member of the APDO (Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers) and went from there. Help with decluttering before moving house; organising when moving in; help with the build up of children’s clothes and toys; gaining back the use of a spare room; organisation of a kitchen, a wardrobe, or even a whole house. As well as more personal circumstances such as bereavement. I’m currently nearing the completion of one client’s property whose request was to turn her ‘house into a home’. We have worked through nearly every area of the house, including the loft and garage. I’ve also removed all charity donations, helped with selling on items, and implemented new organising systems as well as arranging for a local firm to board out the loft and install new shelving. Do you practice what you preach at home? Haha, I try to! I have systems in place to ensure everything has a home. I regularly keep on top of clothes, childrens’ toys, kitchen cupboards etc. I also always have boxes on the go for charity donations and fabric recycling as well as passing on the children’s clothes to friends. It makes home life so much simpler. What are the main positives of decluttering/organising your house? There are so many positives! Less stress is the main one. You save time as you’re not constantly looking for things, you save money as you’re not re-buying things you already have, your mind is clearer as you’re not having to look at clutter, and tidying away is so much quicker. The list is endless!
What’s the best thing for people to do with the things they no longer need? My chosen methods for disposing of unwanted items are charity shops, Facebook Marketplace and EBay for selling, as well as the local free sites. My last resort is the recycling centre. What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? The outdoor space! We’ve discovered so many more parks and walks over the last few months. Our family favourite is Edenbrook Country Park – a great mix of different walking routes, duck ponds and nature. Our children particularly love the sandy area up towards the BMX track. What would you do to improve or change Fleet? I know lots of people have said this previously but I would implement free parking for 30 minutes. Being able to make a quick dash to the shops without the added hassle of paying for a ticket would be great! I also think a Tapas restaurant would be a fab addition to the area. Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? The Greenhouse on Ancells Farm. Amazing food and coffee, with excellent customer service. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? “Don’t ever stop learning.” What’s the most trouble you have ever been in? Honestly… nothing! Confident first days Seeing their child skipping into the classroom on the first day at nursery, primary or secondary school is the dream for parents, but how do you help your son or daughter to be confident right from the start? Nicky Adams offers some advice. Starting a new school is a milestone for any child – and parent. Undoubtedly, it’s important that the even tiniest of pupils makes the most of the opportunities to learn to love learning, but the first hurdle is getting them through the door! There is a lot parents can do to build their child’s self-confidence, when and make sure he or she is raring to go. Which is especially important during this unsettling time.
Starting nursery or reception Fond farewell: If visions of your child clinging to your neck while you try to deliver him or her to the teacher on the first – or the tenth – morning is the stuff of your nightmares, then it’s important to prepare for goodbyes. Your child will find it easier to settle at nursery or school if he or she is already used to spending time apart from you, in the care of grandparents, other relatives or friends. Start with a short time and gradually build up. Familiarisation: Take advantage of the familiarisation sessions, even if they are virtual ones, usually offered in the run-up to the first day – introduce your child to the teachers or nursery practitioners and make sure he or she has a good look around. At home, chat about the experience to make sure it stays
fresh in the memory. Making friends: If you already know children who are joining nursery or school at the same time, or who will already be there, arrange a playdate and get them all together, socially distanced if necessary – seeing friendly familiar faces is reassuring in a new environment. Practising how to share and take turns can help avoid initial squabbles. Confidence: Boost your child’s selfbelief by creating lots of opportunities to show that he or she really can do it! Encourage any efforts to put on clothes or tidy toys, for example, and be full of praise at a job well done. Focus on your child’s strengths, rather than criticising weaknesses. Emphasise that making mistakes is ok and just part of learning.
Starting secondary school Independence: The major shift from primary to secondary school is in the level of responsibility pupils are expected to take for themselves and their belongings. Gradually build independence in the last couple of years of primary school – encourage your child to pack a bag for a day out perhaps – and practise remembering instructions, such as for a shopping trip or feeding the family pet.

Homework: Designate a quiet place in the house where your son or daughter can study if homework will be a new experience - suggest he or she reads, does a puzzle or learns spellings there without you in the room in the run-up to changing school. Bon voyage: If your child is travelling to and from school unaccompanied by an adult for the first time – perhaps by bus or train – it’s worth trying out the route a few times before the big day. Go with your child to start with, but then find a friend for him or her to travel with, ideally one who will be on the same journey. Even if your child will be walking to school, practise the route and timings to make sure there’s no early-morning rush. Get used to crowds: Some new Year 7 students find the size of their new secondary school quite daunting, particularly if they have been used to a much smaller primary school. Summer holiday clubs are a good way to get used to crowds of big kids and teenagers all in one place, or perhaps take part in a community event that brings large numbers of young people together – socially distanced of course. With your child settled at a new school, the learning can begin!

Remote Learning and Live Lessons Our most recent introduction has been the use of Microsoft Teams as our remote learning system during lockdown this year. The pupils have found Teams very adaptive, they got used to it very quickly and it helped of course they were taking on aspects of training for it during the school year prior to lockdown. We have delivered a replication of exactly what was being taught at school. This has also extended to virtual assemblies, virtual team tutor meetings and music lessons. We were able keep on top of our wellbeing by holding our PSHE and Yo-Chi Classes. One big benefit with our remote learning was that we could still see and speak to our pupils. Not just handing them a piece of paper and asking to complete it each week. We were able to still have timetabled live lessons as we did in school and by using the technology our pupil and teacher relationships were sustained.

Wellbeing and Pastoral Care are topics that are important to St Nicholas’ School and its staff. Currently there are Yo-Chi and relaxation classes that the pupils as young as Nursery are involved in within the curriculum. How to treat an Achilles Tendinopathy? What is Tendinopathy? If the load we put on a tendon is too much and we continue to do this frequently then the amount of tissue breakdown starts to exceed the growth of new tissue. The structure of the tendon then starts to change and becomes less efficient at dealing with load. There are two main stages: Reactive Stage – the tendon will be painful and may swell in response to a sudden increase in load/change in footwear. Degenerate (Chronic) Stage – the tendon may be thickened and you may feel nodules within the tendon. The tendon can progressively deteriorate until it can’t handle any load, this puts it at higher risk

Money Matters Gifting Money to Family - What are the tax implications We recently gave our granddaughter a car to use at university as she is so far from home in Edinburgh. We are going to give her sister £15,000 towards her future house purchase. We have five other grandchildren and want to treat them fairly, but as they are much younger, we are concerned, we may not be alive to help them at their time of need. How can we help them, and how will inheritance tax affect our plans? One way of providing for your grandchildren in the future is to set up a family trust with money from yourselves now. You can retain control during your lifetime and decide who else will have control when you no longer wish to or indeed are unable to. As an example, you might be able to set up a trust and give it £100,000 to invest for the future needs of your grandchildren. If you are the trustees, you’ll decide when to use the money, but as you say it is some time before your grandchildren will need it, so the money should be managed in investments to ensure it has the best opportunity to grow. You should also consider who else to add as trustees to follow your wishes with
you. If your deaths occur at least seven years after creating the trust, the value given will not be liable to inheritance tax. Your chosen trustees will manage the trust according to any wishes you have given them. Please be aware that gifts over £325,000 (individually) will be subject to a tax charge on the excess and/or could be subject to periodic and exit tax charges in the future. If you do not set up a trust, then you‘ll need to ensure your wishes for your grandchildren are relayed to your family through your Will. Your estate will be valued and distributed after the inheritance tax is paid. Therefore, less money may be available due to the loss to the tax. A trust will ensure inheritance tax is reduced when your deaths occur more than seven years after it is set up. £100,000 in a trust currently reduces the inheritance tax by £40,000, which outweighs the arrangement and ongoing investment fees you’ll incur. The inheritance tax treatment of the gift of the car and the house deposit is similar in that the values will be within your estates for the next seven years. Still, there may be an annual allowance reduction available. If you have not used the annual gift allowance in the tax year prior to the gift, you can bring it forward. The allowance is currently £3,000, so it might be possible that the value of your car at the date of the gift can be reduced by as much as £6,000. The balance then remains liable to inheritance tax for seven years. I have assumed that ownership of the
car is in your name prior to the gift, and its value is at least £6,000. When you give money to her sister for her house purchase, if you can make sure it is in the tax year following the car gift, you both could use your respective allowances. Also, your partner may be able to bring forward unused allowance so a total of £9,000 may be ignored for inheritance tax on your deaths within seven years. Inheritance tax has many rules, and there are tried and tested opportunities to manage wealth and assets for the benefit of future generations. Please speak to an experienced adviser, for further thoughts on what actions may be appropriate, taking into account your circumstances and wishes. I’d wanted to start my business for years before I actually did, as I didn’t know what I wanted to do. In this month’s article I’m going to help you discover what you could do for your own business! Now is a really great time to start out on your own – the small business sector has lots of support available and the government are financially supporting too. We’re transitioning away from the traditional 9-5 (or 7-7 more like!) commuting to an office to do one job. We’ve learned that we can work pretty much anywhere and at times to suit. We’ve learned that we can be just as productive (perhaps more so) as we were in the office and that we have more time to actually live our lives. Employers are being more flexible and recognising that it’s OK if Margaret has her yoga class at 3pm and Bill goes to pick up the kids from school with no impact on productivity. Never the less, we can’t escape that many businesses are being forced to streamline and there may be fewer jobs available. But where does it say that you have to make money in just one job? Where does it say that we have to work 40 hours a week to earn what we want? We’ve proven to ourselves that in a very short space of time we can turn our actions around, adapt and change as we need to. It’s all about mindset and believing that it’s possible. So, what business could you start? And what business skills do you need? Firstly, you’ve got all the skills you need, trust me. Secondly, someone will always be able to help with what you can’t do.

When I left corporate, I was looking for another box to fit in – looking for a job title that resonated, a course that fitted, a label I could identify with. My coaching training and subsequent business has enabled me to change my mindset recognising that trying to fit into any box was the crux of the problem. What’s my job title now? Pick whatever you like – Intuitive coach, business coach, marketing expert, healer, mentor, animal communicator, psychic, guide, whatever. A box to fit in and a title is not what matters. I have a far greater sense of belonging now that my work is aligned with my heart and soul than I ever did when I had a proper job title. Finding your passion and purpose can feel like the Holy Grail though can’t it? The simplest way to start is to focus on what makes you happy. And to do that I recommend listening to your heart over your head. How do you listen to your heart? Clear your thoughts – meditate, walk in nature, paint, do whatever
your self-care practise is. This allows you to engage with your emotions and understand what brings you happiness, satisfaction, excitement. Then you can apply the logic and think about how you can make it work. I do remember how challenging it was to find what made me happy though – I genuinely had no idea! Through my coaching practise, I’ve been able to break it down to help others on a practical level that works. Under the direction of Fleet Town Council, the new operator has now taken over the Fleet Market on Gurkha Square as of Saturday 18th July. It is hoped that the new operator will bring more variety to the market and attract many more local customers.
