ten years now. With my new colleague Rupert, we mostly focus on the second half of life - the “Prime Time”. But in these articles I am aiming to cover the financial journey through the whole of life. So it’s good to start at the beginning in an issue with an education focus - what do we need to learn early on in life? But hold on a moment… there’s a bigger question than that which ought to come first. I often come across people who are reluctant to think about their finances;

investing, tax, and pensions… enough to recognise when you need to find out some more. Some of that is best done with financial advice - especially those final topics, but there’s a lot you can do for yourself, and I hope to help with that in future articles.

Digital Education The internet is such an integral part of modern life at home – from booking a holiday or ordering the groceries to keeping up with current affairs – it’s no surprise that many schools are now making use of the web in lessons. Yet the debate over the pros and cons of students using digital devices in the classroom rumbles on. The Good Schools Guide’s Nicky Adams investigates. More than a third of UK five-year-olds own their own tablet; by the age of 15 that fraction is more like a half. And with smartphone ownership among older children and teens growing year-on-year, it’s true to say that young people today are increasingly connected to the internet. But while they may be free to surf at home, schools are still divided on whether or not students should be using digital devices in class. Those in favour say the internet is a huge resource for learning for today’s switched-on students, who are familiar with technology and want to use it to access a wealth of knowledge. Those against see phones and tablets as an unwelcome distraction to traditional lessons, which open a potential minefield of texting and social media.

Advantages Instant knowledge: A quick internet search and children have an unimaginable avalanche of information at their fingertips, and before they have lost interest in the question. Broadening horizons: Whether growing up in a tiny village or a big city, through the internet young people can gain an insight into the lives of others all around the world. Culture, language, current affairs… international understanding is encouraged. Engaging lessons: Technically adept teachers can use digital devices to enhance learning, perhaps by

tasking students to find out all they can on a certain topic, by using the many educational apps to learn or revise in a fun and accessible way, or using design and presentation tools to create and share their work. In classrooms equipped with large wall-mounted monitors, the work of individual students can be beamed to the screen as an example for discussion. Moving pictures: In place of the dusty textbook, students can watch video of events as well as educational films that bring academic subjects to life, from man’s first steps on the moon to the behaviours of wildlife. The video and camera functions of digital devices are also useful for students to keep a record of their own achievements, show the stages of a science experiment or creative projects, for example, or analyse their performance in sport. Connecting with others: Using digital devices to communicate with students in a partner school abroad, by text, email or video calling is the modern equivalent of having a penpal. Classes in different schools or even countries can link together to share lectures and lessons and hold debates and discussions with a variety of viewpoints. Preparation for the workplace: Most organisations and businesses now rely on the internet for their day-today activities, so knowing how to use technology to communicate and work online are vital skills for any school leaver.

Education Special

Disadvantages Distraction: Social media and texting using their digital devices are tempting to students who should be focusing on their learning while at school. Cyberbullying: An issue growing with the use of smart phones and tablets and difficult for teachers to detect and deal with. Inappropriate material: Schools work hard to restrict access to inappropriate websites and content on their networks, but breaches do occur and youngsters may bypass the wifi and use unrestricted mobile data. Of course, students need to be taught to be safe online and how to judge the quality of sources of information (often referred to as digital literacy and citizenship). Disconnection: Spending too much time using digital devices can mean young people miss out on face-toface social activities, conversation with family and friends and appreciating their surroundings and environment. Schools continue to decide for themselves the extent to which digital devices have a place in their classrooms. Where they are permitted, it’s clear that guidelines need to be put in place for students, staff and parents to make sure young people make the best use of the wealth of learning resources online. St Nicholas’ School St Nicholas’ School founded in 1935 and has gone from

strength to strength over the years. Renowned for its academic excellence, which has been the case since they first started educating pupils in the 1930s, they are also renowned for being a Christian foundation, a school with pupils from 3 years to 16 and for their unique focus on girls’ education throughout. Set in beautiful surroundings covering 27 acres with superb facilities including a full size sports hall, a large art and textiles centre, four dedicated science laboratories and specialist facilities for music, ICT, food technology and drama, you can understand why this school is so special. The school’s performing arts centre provides a fully raked theatre seating over 350, a drama studio and a full orchestra pit. The floodlit Multi Use Games Area provides pupils with a multi-use sports facility, including hockey, tennis, netball, football and cricket. The newly designed netball and tennis courts are also floodlit, and enable twenty four pupils to play tennis at the same time.

Last year, St Nicholas’ School introduced outdoor education to their curriculum. The specialised learning approach ran by Outdoor Specialist, Steve Wariner, compliments the curriculum by developing the appropriate physical, social, emotional and spiritual aspects of the pupils. “We are extremely lucky to be able to have the environment to run this facility and all of our pupils really enjoy their classes,” said Headmistress Dr O Wright. Wellbeing is also a topic that is important to St Nicholas’ School and its staff. Currently there are Yo-Chi classes that the pupils as young as Nursery are involved in within the curriculum and most recently staff have been trained as

ELSAs in order to support the pupils emotional needs. In all, St Nicholas’ School caters for every individual, specialising in sport, drama, music or art. They are proud to say that they have helped build some successes with several famous alumni, including tennis paralympian, Lucy Shuker; Fashion, News and Features Director at the Telegraph, Bethan Holt; Nutritionist and model, Rosemary Ferguson and they are building and strengthening their alumni association all the time. Inviting ex-pupils into the school provides valuable careers advice to the pupils. The most recent inspection report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) achieved the highest rating, ‘Excellent’ and year on year they achieve the most outstanding GCSE results. Last time we looked at limiting beliefs and how to free yourself from the financial trap. Don’t forget, there’s my free online course to help you that’s available 24/7 via www. revitalisecoaching.co.uk. This month, I was remembering what it was like to be going back to school after the summer holidays and it got me thinking. It got me thinking about working Mums. Maybe you’re relieved your little angels have gone back to school, maybe you’re dreading your baby starting school for the first time, maybe you’re experiencing the heart wrench of empty nest syndrome as your grown-up baby is off to University. I frequently see Mums in my practice and without doubt you have a tough job. Yes, you love them, but it doesn’t mean you’re a rubbish parent by wanting to have a life or career of your own. So often, I see Mums who are feeling guilty when they’re at work that they’re not at home with their children and feeling guilty when they’re home because they’re not at work. Many end up feeling like they’re not giving 100% to anything and that can lead to feelings of unfulfillment, guilt, low confidence, stress, isolation, frustration and so on. I don’t have children, so I don’t pretend to know what it feels like. What I do know, is that you

Revitalise Your Life

By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching

Welcome to September’s column helping you to revitalise your life! are doing the very best you can and that’s worth a lot. It can be a tough landscape in the working space. You want to perform and have a successful career, you want to be an amazing Mum and be there for your family and I’m sure you do a brilliant job at both. Even if you don’t think you do! What I experience in my practice so often though is a loss of identity. These talented, skilled and compassionate women arrive in my practice looking for support in finding fulfilment. Often the phrase goes something like, “I’m not unhappy, but I’m not happy either. I just feel like I’m existing. Of course, I love my family and I wouldn’t be without them, but I just feel unfulfilled and like I’m not doing anything very well.” And those women who have older children leaving home can feel lost and not needed anymore. When I ask what would make them happy or fulfilled, often they look a little blank and say something like, “I don’t know. I don’t know anymore. I don’t know who I am anymore.” We start to focus on re-discovering who they are and what life could

look like in an ideal world. We look at their values and where they’re being met. We look at self-belief and focus on building up confidence and empowerment. Some women end up starting their own businesses to create the flexibility they need, others negotiate in their current jobs to get better flexibility, others work to change their outlook and start seeing themselves in a more positive light. The point being, everyone is different and so there isn’t one solution for all. Also, that it is possible to change your life, even if it feels completely impossible. One small change can often make all the difference. Remember, you’re doing the very best you can and that is good enough. And if you’re feeling unfulfilled or like you’re just coasting through life, know that it’s possible to make a change. I’m here to help you, just drop me an email and we can go from there. Take care,

September - the perfect

month for new beginnings!

Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing We have all been used to a new year starting at school, ready to learn something new, so why not think about learning something new yourself? All new terms of evening classes start in September, and I used to challenge myself every year to learn a new language (after that Summer holiday) or a new skill. I used to love my pottery evening classes, however, these days, music fills all of my spare time, practising with my choir and gigging with my band. Or maybe a course to enhance

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?

ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.

Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.

Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley

Property Checks

01

252 622052

Most of us have seen one of the many TV programmes telling us horrible tales about ‘Rogue Landlords’ and ‘Nightmare Tenants’ but it’s important to keep these horror stories in perspective. The common factor is that either tenants haven’t reported problems or Landlords have not checked. Regular property visits are essential to ensure that repairs are spotted early on so that minor issues are dealt with promptly to avoid major work and big expense. Sometimes tenants may be reluctant to flag up a repair through fear that this might affect their tenancy, so it’s important that a Landlord, or your letting agent make regular checks - at Honey Lettings we recommend every three months throughout the tenancy. Checking the silicon around sinks and baths and replacing when required will prevent leaks and major damage to kitchen tops and units. Mould and mildew build up can be nipped in the bud and sometimes tenants need guidance on how to ventilate, heat and clean a property to avoid this occurring in the first place. Frayed thresholds on carpets can be covered with wider cover strips but if left may require a new carpet. All these items can be spotted easily but are seldom reported by a tenant until the problem is beyond a simple repair. Roof tiles, fascias and guttering are not generally the concern of tenants but do need checking to plan repair, maintenance and cleaning. Garden walls and fences, overhanging and overgrown trees, dangerous paving and other trip hazards need to be checked as these remain the responsibility of the Landlord. The tenancy agreement may well state that pets are not allowed but If the tenant knows that you don’t inspect your property this may be ignored. Sub letting of properties and rooms not only breaches the tenancy agreement but also puts the Landlord on the wrong side of the law under the government’s new Right to Rent checks. A tenant may consider a relative moving in as a nanny be no issue but any stay longer than 30 days needs to be considered as an additional occupant and the relevant paperwork completed. Putting a positive on all of this – regular checks are a good thing. It gives tenants the opportunity to point out minor repairs that may be niggling them, and Landlords can rest assured that the tenants are looking after the property, staying longer with the understanding that you want to maintain your property well and protect your investment. The cost of full management service including property inspections carried out by a competent agent could help reduce the cost of repairs and maintenance and possible legal action. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

A few fast and effective ways to declutter your mind When do you know you should have a clear out? Do you ever get that feeling of overwhelm? That feeling when your brain is just going to POP with stuff and nothing is making it go away. There was a time in my life when my brain was so full of stuff such as emotions and things to do that panic and anxiety hit me full on in the face. I suddenly stopped coping and couldn’t seem to get anything done, it was like being in a vicious cycle whirling out of control. Luckily for me I discovered life coaching and hypnotherapy and was able to take some time out to get off the cycle and re-evaluate my life. The first thing I had to do was de-clutter my mind which allowed me to see clearly again and think straight, it really did feel like cleaning a very dirty window and suddenly seeing a beautiful view that you didn’t even knew existed. Here are some of my top tips to help your de-clutter your mind and have a view again: ♥ Schedule yourself time for a brain dump. Get yourself pen and paper and sit somewhere quiet and just write down every single thought, feeling and emotion that comes into your brain. Write down everything you need to do and want to do and if nothing comes just write that. Try closing your eyes and take some slow deep breaths to help you relax and that may start your brain whirring.

Daniela Stones DipPPC, CertHYPCS www.danielastones.co.uk info@danielastones.co.uk 07948 685680

♥ Once you have everything out of your brain and onto paper its time to start prioritizing. Mark stuff that’s urgent and important as top priority and work down from there. Try using a scale of 1-10 with 10 being high important and urgent and 1 being not urgent or important. What can you bin on your list? Only work with one list that incorporates work and life, that will really help with your work life balance. ♥ Try and write your thoughts and things to do down as often as you can, ideally as you are thinking about them. The sooner you get these down the easier and quicker your mind will rest. Carry with you a pen and paper or use a to do list on your phone. ♥ Have a note book by your bed,

Teresa Jayne DipCNM, MBANT, RCNHC www.tjnutritionandhealth.co.uk contact@tjnutritionandhealth.co.uk 07990 665928

but if you are anything like me this will be the best thing you will ever do. If your brain seems to ping on as soon as you switch your light off, then have a go at writing those thoughts down then and there. You will be amazed at how quickly you master the art of writing legibly in the dark, and you will sleep a whole lot better. ♥ Call in the experts, if you are really struggling to make the first move or change the habits of a life time then coaching or hypnotherapy could be the answer for you. This will allow you time to focus on just you, your thoughts, your actions and behaviours and help you find the way forward that works just for you.
