Get the Scoop... Zero Waste Your Bathroom For many of us, the bathroom is a busy place in the household. If it is anything like my own bathroom used to be, then it is frequently the site of battling children, a turnstile of family members vying to brush their teeth, have a shower or use the toilet or a shambolic mess of toilet paper, toothpaste and towels! It is a room which many neglect in terms of their ‘green habits’ with many of us forgetting to recycle in this room simply because it is too far from the recycling bin. However, this is the room I found easiest to ‘zero waste’. Hopefully, I have some tips which might just cut your bills, reduce your waste and lower your carbon footprint. 1. Use bars of soap and shampoo or refill at a local ‘Zero Waste Shop’. The bars generally come naked or in a cardboard box/sleeve and remove the need for the plastic bottle and the refills mean that you can use your own bottle over and over again. 2. Showers are better than baths (unless you have a power shower). The average shower uses 22.7l of water per minute and the average bath uses 163.6l. If you can stick to a 5 minute shower then you’ll save a significant amount of water. 3. Use plastic free toothpaste and a bamboo toothbrush, floss and mouthwash – the reasons are obvious. Did you know you can now get toothpaste tablets which can be refilled or bought in little tins? 4. Recycle in the bathroom – Pop two bins in your bathroom or

none at all to force you to put the right thing in the right bin. Perhaps hang a bag on the back of the bathroom door to collect recyclables. 5. Cut the Chemicals – make your own. So many of our cosmetics use a whole host of words I can’t pronounce. It can take 26 seconds for what you put on your skin to enter your bloodstream. If you’re using anything other than 100% natural cosmetics, it makes sense to stop and think about swapping. There are amazingly easy alternatives – body scrubs involving yogurt, oats, sugar for dry skin – avocado and honey deep hair conditioners – coconut oil as a facial cleanser – and if you don’t fancy playing with your food, there are plenty of amazing companies out there doing the work for you. 6. Safety Razors – In the US alone, 2 million razors are tossed every year. That plastic is going no where! Change to a safety razor and go back to a closer shave, a beautiful moisturising shaving bar and inexpensive blade inserts. A way to shave lots of plastic

from your life! 7. Plastic Free your sanitary products. If I had to give up being ‘zero waste’, I would fight to keep my Moon cup (other brands available). A small silicone cup which makes monthly necessaries a whole lot easier and well worth a little research. Another option involves cloth sanitary towels. Using one of these options can not only save you many pennies but its estimated that the average woman uses 11,000 sanitary items in their lifetime – That’s a LOT of saved waste. 8. Toilet Paper – we cut down 27,000 trees every single day for toilet paper! Use bamboo or recycled versions. 9. Deodorant – You can buy natural deodorant in glass jars or in cardboard tubes for both men and women which work incredibly well. 10. Bamboo cloths / facial wipes. Did you know that your cotton wool may contain 50% polyester? Swap to bamboo reusable versions which can be thrown in the washing machine and save all that waste heading to the bin!

Better Photography

with Kim

Hi, I’m Kim from Kim Byrne Photography and I’d like to welcome you to the second of this series designed to help you

old masters such as William Turner, but it dates back many years before then. It teaches us to see the viewfinder in three vertically and horizontally sections making a 9-part grid, with important elements placed on one of the intersecting sections

take better photos. Last month we talked about how to make your subject stand-out, the edge of the frame, the background and watching the light. Over the next few months we’ll look at 3 elements of composition; the rule of thirds, leading lines and simplicity. But before we dive in, I thought I’d give you some background on composition and why it’s important.

struggle to create visually pleasing and powerful images.

Composition simply put is how visual elements are arranged within a frame, for us in photography that frame is easily seen through the viewfinder. How you use composition in your photographs shows your vision and how you want the viewer to react in the same way a composer leads you through his music.

Composition isn’t a set of rules you must follow, it’s a few simple guidelines to help you take better photographs. Simplicity, the rule of thirds and leading lines all have one purpose; to help you. Photos composed using these guidelines will have a balanced look and once you understand the ‘rules’ every now and then you will be able to bend them.

In my view it’s important to develop your understanding of composition. Knowing where to place the various elements in your picture is a key component of great composition. Done well it can turn an average photo into a great photo, but without it, you will

To help you with this month’s challenge here’s a quick overview of two techniques we’ll cover in future articles. Leading lines for example are one of the most powerful ways to lead your eye into and/or around your images. The rule of thirds was used by the

What is composition?

You have control over what draws the eye in your images. Seeing great composition is quite easy once you understand the controls you have.

Photo Challenge Here’s a little challenge for you to try while thinking about the points discussed above. You can shoot indoors or out but most of all, have fun and don’t over think things. Part 1 – We are bombarded with imagery today, so really look at pictures (photo’s, adverts, paintings etc.) and notice what draws your eye, what else is in the image but doesn’t compete with the key subject, where is it in the frame, where is the light and shadow. Part 2 – This week rather than looking at images around you look at some your photographs, notice what’s in the image, what would you change if you took the same photo again. Really study them and try to identify where you can improve your composition.

Please advise. The type of tax liability that needs to be considered here is capital gains tax. A capital gain in simple terms is the difference between the price you sell the property for, less the original purchase price. This will give you the basic capital gain (or potentially a loss) from which other expenses that were incurred can be deducted, such as stamp duty land tax, legal and estate agent fees. Revitalise Your Life

getting longer and warmer,

By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching

all the spring flowers are

Welcome to March’s column helping you to revitalise your life!

I love March, mostly

out and the clocks change heralding the soon to come summer months, also because it’s my birthday!

And to celebrate, I am giving away 3 FREE intuitive coaching sessions! You can use these sessions for whatever you like, but if you are wanting to change your career and don’t know what to do, my intuitive skills will help you get there. Spring is such a great time of year for planning and making changes. There’s a general feeling of positivity and optimism about the year ahead and what can be achieved. It can be a really exciting time of year and a fantastic launch pad for your wants and needs for the year ahead. I often spend January reflecting on the year before – what worked, what didn’t do so well, what I learned about myself, what I achieved, what I need to stop and start doing. February is then my planning month of what I want to bring into my world (and sometimes what I want to exit my world!) for the year ahead. That’s the logical, rationale based thinking element, which is important. What I find equally important is checking in with my emotive senses and higher self. I take time to really look at myself and understand what emotions are going on – what’s weighing me

down or holding me back, what needs to be released and let go of and what I need to bring in or develop. This is what I call right brain thinking which is where our emotions, empathy and intuition are based. And for me, this is where the real magic is! Listening to what my heart (soul) wants as well as what my head (ego) wants gives me the whole and complete picture. This is where I uncover my purpose and direction and my why. Without that, I feel like I’m going around in circles and not getting anywhere. To get to this part of the right brain hemisphere I use all sorts of tools and techniques but one of my favourites is working with my angel and oracle cards. The cards provide such a great platform to uncover deep stuff in the super sub conscious and join the dots together of where you’re going and how you can get there. From here I create my vision board and action plan… and I’m off! This sense of excitement and fulfilment is what I want to help you create, because I love it and

I know how powerful and helpful my process is. Having a purpose and direction supported with a strong why is the key to true happiness. I couldn’t think of a better way for me to help you find your happiness in this way than doing something I love as part of my birthday celebrations! These sessions will be on a first come, first served basis and must be taken in person at my practice in Farnham. 1 session per person and must be redeemed by 30 April 2020. Please email me at jenny@revitalisecoaching.co.uk quoting BIRTHDAY to book your free session. Take care,

Estate Planning - Making a Difference Beyond your Death Imagine being able to save a five-figure sum in tax just with some forward planning! Reducing an Inheritance Tax bill like that is quite possible, but is not without its challenges, since thinking about the consequences of a death are not necessarily very pleasant. But there is often scope to ease the loss for those left behind. As a result this area of financial planning can have a very positive impact and be highly cost-effective. There are various aspects to the whole area of “Estate Planning. First and foremost a Will is needed. A Will ensures that it is clear where you want your assets to go on your death, and makes it easier for everyone. Beyond that, Inheritance Tax is the main concern. A calculation is needed to provide a rough estimate of what that might be. Online calculators may help with that. If there is going to be a liability then various approaches might be taken to reduce it: Spend it! - that is the easiest approach. But it may be easier said than done for older people. And the biggest expenditure towards the end of life is usually the cost of care, which needs to be considered. Give it away! - you could give some of your assets to the planned beneficiaries of your Will while you are still there

Invest it - certain types of investment are quicker to remove the value from your estate than a straightforward gift. Care is needed, but for someone familiar with investing (or someone with professional advice) this can be a good solution. Gift into a Trust - Instead of an outright gift to an individual or charity, various types of trust are available which enable the person concerned to retain

ongoing income. It need not be complicated. Most of those approaches rely on having cash available. So tied up in a house then things can be more challenging. But even so there is scope for some planning. Ask us about that or any other aspect of estate planning. First meetings are free.

Facial Focus Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing Facials are one of my most popular treatments, so I thought I would tell you all about them this month. I have used many professional product ranges in my career – Clarins, Decleor, Guinot, Elemis, ESPA, Phytomer, totally organic Green People, however, I have to say that my current skincare range for facials is by far the best I have ever used. I use a product range called Natura Bisse, which is an exclusive spa brand from Barcelona. Because of my experience with other spa brands, I am the only small salon locally, selected to use the products for my facial treatments. Natura Bisse can also be found in Pennyhill Park Spa, The Four Seasons Hotel, and Wentworth Spa. The facial products are so successful because they combine scientific deep treatment of the skin with beautiful essential oils, and holistic touch. As an aromatherapist, smell is so important to me, but I also have an aging, menopausal skin. I need to see that my skin is visibly smoother, lifted and those fine lines around my eyes have faded, and these products definitely make a difference. ‘The Natura Bisse ICONS’ Experience combines the fabulous ‘Oscars Facial’ with a specialised pressure point back massage. It uses their most iconic products

and was launched to celebrate their 40th birthday last year. The 3 stage glycolic peel treatment used in the ‘Oscars Facial’ is a real experience of tingling, warmth and fizzing!! Mild chemical peels are not at all scary – they are just a different form of exfoliation, which can be amazingly effective on aging skins, leaving the skin feeling baby soft. This treatment is perfect for menopausal skins that need nourishing, hydrating, toning and brightening, and a great skin treatment for the Spring. The peels may not be appropriate for all skins so we have a fabulous Vitamin C facial too, which smells like fresh mandarins. This facial has a more gentle scrub exfoliation, and a beautiful soufflé mousse mask mixed for each client. Vitamin C is amazing for skin rejuvenation, as it stimulates collagen and elastin production, which gives plumpness to the skin. It also helps to even out pigmentation and skin tone. The Diamond Cocoon Experience Facial focuses on protecting your

skin from outside aggressors, like the damaging and aging effects of blue light. If you sit in front of a screen all day, the blue light emitted from all screens, including phones, can have a damaging effect on skin cells, so the new products in this facial will help to protect against this. It includes a pre-biotic deep cleansing ritual to protect the natural acid balance on the skin, an intense purifying exfoliation peel, and an amazing massage using cool white jade stones for contouring and lifting. I promise you will never have experienced facials like these, so if you have a birthday coming up, or just need some TLC, treat yourself. You will not be disappointed! Enjoy looking after your skin this month!

Fleet Life meets... South African sisters Kate Hoch and Lisa Weber, who have been proving sisters really are “doing it for themselves” by running Hook House Hotel together for the past three years. Please tell us a bit about who you are and what you do? We’ve always been extremely close, so after spending twenty years apart in different countries, we finally managed to realise the dream of having a business together. We run the beautiful Hook House Hotel, a small Grade 11 listed building in Hook. As well as the 16 rooms in the hotel, we also have a large permanent marquee which is used for weddings, functions and events. How, when and why did you come to live in Fleet? Since the age of 17, Lisa has spent her life with one foot in the UK and one foot in South Africa. However, three years ago she finally decided to put down some more permanent roots, so her and her family moved permanently to Hook to run the hotel with Kate. Kate came over here to work and travel straight after college and ended up settling in Wimbledon for many years. She decided to move to Fleet five years ago to be closer to family who live in Hartley Wintney. Tell us a bit about your backgrounds… We had a wonderful childhood growing up in the small town of Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. We were privileged to have been close to mountains, beaches and game reserves and managed to spend most of our childhood outdoors. After school, Kate pursued a career in graphics and Lisa went on to work in construction. A far cry from running a hotel - however, being a South African, our lives have always centred around entertaining and people.

18 | Fleet Life March 2020

How did you come to own Hook House Hotel? Years ago our mother popped into Hook House whilst looking for a place to stay for a family wedding. Although the hotel had already closed, she fell in love with it, so when it come onto the market she couldn’t resist. Tell us something interesting about the hotel? We love our little hotel, it has an amazing amount of history and when you walk in it has a wonderful homely feel. It has a history of being haunted - we have yet to experience any ghosts ourselves - but we believe at one time residents of Hook would cross the road rather than walk past the house at night. It has changed hands a few times since it was built in 1684 and until 1987 when the Bull family got planning permission to turn it into a hotel. From then on it has been a family owned hotel hopefully ensuring its history is preserved. Interestingly it has always been known as a Georgian House, however we have only recently discovered in the sale brochure in 1967 that the original building is in fact Queen Anne Architecture. What have been your biggest learnings/challenges/achievements over the past three years? The biggest challenge we have both faced is balancing our family/work lives. The hospitality industry hours are challenging when raising young children. That said, we are incredibly fortunate to have each other - our kids are basically raised together so they are very close as a result.

What are your plans for the hotel for 2020? To raise our wedding venue profile. We have also opened a gallery in the hotel and are hoping to promote local and international art What do you miss most about South Africa? We miss the sun, swimming pools and, of course, our friends who we grew up with. We also both miss the African bush. Is there a big ex-pat SA community here? We believe there is a very big ex-pat SA community here in Fleet and we are hoping to host a lot more South African ‘Braais’ over the summer months at Hook House. Both our husbands are South African and take pretty much every opportunity to braai even in bad weather - in fact they can sometimes be seen huddled over the Weber with umbrellas. What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? We both love Fleet pond - we go walking with the kids and dog almost every weekend. What would you do to improve or change Fleet? It would be lovely to have more clothes shops in Fleet. Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? We like going to the Oatsheaf pub as a family but the boys’ favourite place on a Sunday morning is Frankie’s for a fry-up. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Nothing worthwhile is ever easy! Interview by Emily Gregory of Baby Love Photography, www.baby-love-photography.com

Tech Neck: Check your posture By Lydia Simpson Physiotherapist, Hartwood Health

Over recent years the UK and the rest of the world have seen a huge advancement in technology and how it is used in the day to day life of the average person. It is difficult to walk down the street, stand on a train or sit in a waiting room without seeing someone using a smartphone or tablet. The use of these devices has, arguably, made daily life easierwe can “google” the answer to a pressing question, GPS maps helps us to find where we need to go, and we can get a message to a friend at the press of a button, but the excessive use of these devices has also been associated with an increase in musculoskeletal pain of the neck, back, shoulders, arms and hands. The difference between the use of a desktop computer or laptop and handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets is that

they are more portable, they tend to be held in the hand and which needs support from the hand and shoulder, and is assisted by the downward and forward position of the head. The head is heavy, think of it as a bowling ball… Imagine having to hold a bowling ball in front of you for 10-15 minutes with your arms out in front. After a very short while, your arms will become tired and you would want to hold the ball closer to your chest. Now if you think about the position of the head in relation to the shoulders and body when you use a smartphone or tablet, such as in this “Tech Neck” image, the strain on the upper back and neck is comparable to the strain your arms would feel in holding a bowling ball out in front. In using a device like these, sustained head forward and rounded shoulder positions put a lot of strain on the muscles and joints of the shoulders, upper back and back of the neck and are associated with musculoskeletal pain. We often see patterns to muscle imbalances associated with these kinds of positions, mainly tightness of the chest and back of the neck and weakness of the upper back and deep neck flexors - commonly referred to as “upper crossed syndrome”.

Advice from a physio: • When you can, try to bring your device closer to chest height rather than looking at it on your lap. Put your tablet on a stand or use a table to support your forearms. • Think about trying to keep your

20 | Fleet Life March 2020

head on top of your shoulders, it also helps to engage your upper back by pulling your shoulder blades closer together and down your back. • When using your device, think about tucking your chin in rather than letting it poke forwards. • Take regular breaks to move around, roll your shoulders back and move your head gently in different directions. • Speak to a physio or other health professional for more advice if you are concerned or experiencing pain.

Eco-friendly schools Schools are getting gradually greener as the need to look after our planet becomes ever more pressing, reports Nicky Adams. Sir David Attenborough’s BBC series ‘Blue Planet’ opened many people’s eyes to the Earth’s looming environmental crisis and children in particular have taken up the challenge, encouraging their schools to do their bit to help reverse climate change and conserve our limited natural resources. Re-use, recycle: Every UK secondary school pupil produces 22kg of waste per year and primary school pupils even more – 45kg. But of course many of these discarded materials can now be recycled and schools and their pupils are leading the way when it comes to collecting them up and shipping them off to be turned into something new. Card and paper are the biggest waste products, but food waste is the next largest quantity and many schools are working hard to reduce the amount of lunch leftover or at least do something with it, such as turning spare veg into soup or ripe fruit into smoothies. Collection points: Plastics, metals and glass are also widely recycled by local councils, but there are also many other schemes in operation to collect and recycle or re-use specific items - from pens and printer ink to crisp packets and coffee pods - and textiles can be sold by weight for cash

to be ploughed back into school environmental projects. Grow your own: Cultivating fruit and veg in a school garden is a great lesson for children in where their food comes from and the crop can be used in the school kitchen, racking up zero food miles. Environmentally friendly: Some schools now serve a weekly meatfree lunch to make more use of local fresh produce and a small dent in the environmental impact of animal farming. Many are insisting that school cleaners use products that are non-polluting and some prefer to clean with steam rather than with chemicals. Natural resources: School buildings often have expanses of roof, ideal for the installation of solar panels – this clean energy can be fed back into the school and is often used for water heating – while thermostatic radiator controls and sensor-controlled lighting can cut down on a school’s electricity use. Harvesting and reusing rainwater and fitting limiters to the cisterns of school toilets can

Education Special

help to make sure water use is kept to a minimum too. Of course the benefits of these systems to schools can be financial as well as environmental. Sustainability: A new school building is a blank canvas and a great opportunity to be eco-friendly. Wooden buildings are becoming the norm for new classroom blocks, but also sports halls, dining halls and offices – while timber removes and stores greenhouse gas from the atmosphere, masonry or steelframe constructions are estimated to account for 40 per cent of the world’s emissions. But even day-today, schools can contribute to the effort to slow down the depletion of the Earth’s resources. Just switching to food wrappings and containers made from recyclable or compostable materials or asking parents to send their children to school with their own reusable water bottles means every school can make a positive difference to the planet their pupils will inhabit in the future.

Yateley Manor

It is between the ages of seven and eight that children develop the attitudes, abilities and relationships that help them succeed in their education. Crucially this happens when they are between Years 2 and 3. It is also a time when some children risk finding learning “burdensome. and strengths, appreciating their barriers to learning and taking steps to remove them, we are able to open their eyes and minds to a future that we cannot imagine. The foundation to their lives will be a safe, friendly, warm environment where they will be supported every step along their journey. A Yateley Manor journey.

The key to success and providing

it should be about developing the

the very best education for

whole child and the way to do that

children is twofold. Firstly, create an environment where children feel safe. A warm, friendly school where there is much laughter, where

is by forging strong relationships. By really getting to know children, understanding their passions

adults care about children and get to know them as a person so they can best support them. Secondly success comes from a well-planned and effective transition programme to ensure children and families understand each step of the journey ahead. There should be no surprises when moving to a new school. A school such as Yateley Manor. We know that a happy child will be a successful child. A good quality education should be much broader than just the core subjects;

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

2019  2020

For the Landlord their property is probably one of their highest value assets and they want to know it is in safe hands. As Fleet’s only agent specialising in lettings, we are able to concentrate on making sure our landlords and their properties are our top priority.

LETTING AGENT IN FLEET

MAINTENANCE – Whether managed by the landlord or an agent, attending to maintenance issues swiftly is crucial. Tenants are generally more comfortable if the property is managed by an agent, but most importantly, they like to feel issues are dealt with quickly and competently. Honey Lettings believe quarterly checks are essential to spot small problems that could quickly escalate into bigger issues. The checks verify that the property is not deteriorating beyond normal wear and tear and give the tenant the opportunity to point out any issues. We will point out problems that the tenant should resolve and hopefully guide them into how they can be avoided in the future. We will also present issues which need resolving by the landlord and find suitable contractors when required. Leaving a property unchecked for a long period may leave the landlord with a property needing substantial repairs well beyond the value of the deposit held. Properties, both new and old, suffer from issues including leaks from shower, toilets not flushing or heating systems and electrics failing. These can happen at any time day or night and to keep the tenant happy these will require prompt attention. Honey Lettings have competent contractors who we use on a regular basis, all with the relevant insurance cover to undertake the work. With a key held at our local office we can liaise with tenants to give access for contractors. If the problem is of an urgent nature, our out of hours call handling will enable us to arrange a visit to resolve the issue promptly and avoid further damage. Good management of the property will hopefully lead to happy tenants who are likely to stay in the property longer. Having a good relationship with your tenants will generally mean that they are flexible. At the end of the tenancy a happy tenant will hopefully be flexible with the marketing the property to the next tenant and hopefully minimise void time at the property. Cover provided by the Management Service will leave you free from this responsibility and is essential for those spending time abroad. Although a fully Managed Service has a cost this needs to be weighed against lost income from non-payment of rent and improved upkeep of your property. All agent fees can also be offset against the taxable income from your property. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

Garden Goings On

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?

ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.

Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.

Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.
