Get the Scoop... Living a more Sustainable Lifestyle Unless you’ve been living under a rock in a desolate wilderness of late (and actually – even if you have!), you’d be hard pressed not to have noticed the plethora of attention that our environment has been attracting. Discussions from climate change to plastic free to zero waste living are being had on TV, on Social Media, in restaurants and with friends, relatives and strangers. The problem is that there is so much information, some misleading, that many people simply don’t know which way to turn. I very much hope that over the course of the next few months, I can iron out some misconceptions, provide you with some easy ideas for being more ‘green minded’ and inspire you to be more mindful about your purchases. Over the last few years, my family and I have been doing our best to lower our impact on the planet. The bottom line is that it is impossible to have no impact at all but that even the smallest of changes really can make a difference. For example, if all 1,844,200 people in Hampshire (HCC 2018) refused just one single use plastic (SUP) bottle this week, then 1,844,200 bottles would not have needed to energy to be produced, would not have an opportunity to find their way into our water systems or to harm our wildlife and would not need to have the energy required for recycling, wasted on it’s rebirth. Our societal norms have pushed us into a world where we are used to having what we want, when we want it. With companies such as Amazon boasting record delivery times and being able to offer items at ever cheaper prices, we no
longer have a sense of the real value of the items we buy and we buy them in their droves. We see excess as a show of wealth. Unless we are providing our children with lots of ‘stuff’, we don’t feel we are parenting well enough. This is the first thing I believe it is important for us to change. Our mindset. By realising that we don’t need the majority of ‘things’ that exist in our life, we can significantly reduce our waste. I am not asking that you suddenly start living a life of minimalism and boredom but that we think carefully about what we are choosing to spend our money on. I also suggest strongly that you start with one thing and gradually make changes.
Let’s start simply. I would love for you to start with the REDUCE from the reduce, reuse, recycle phrase. Say no to carrier bags – including the paper versions. Whilst the plastic is awful in terms of our wildlife and its refusal to degrade for hundreds or even thousands of years, it takes 4 times as much energy to create a paper bag than a plastic bag (Northern Ireland Assembly 2011). Take your own material bags and use them over and over again. Say no to straws – including the paper versions. Unless it is a medical need, it’s a wasteful item. If you must have a straw choose bamboo or stainless steel. Lastly, say no to SUP water bottles. Tap water is good quality in the UK, we have no need for the bottled version.

Where’s Charlie? Welcome to our monthly competition. Finding Charlie has been so popular that we have decided to keep it going for 2020. As before, the answers can be found right here in Fleet! Each month our cuddly toy version of puppy Charlie can be seen in a Fleet business. The picture will give you clues as like a company logo, interior colour scheme, art or photos on the wall or even a sample of the product the business sells. All you have to do is tell us the name of the business!
This month you could win a £25 voucher* to spend at this local business *The prize is a voucher to spend on services at the business you guessed correctly and valid until 29 February 20. Terms and conditions apply. No cash alternative or exchanges given. If you know where the above picture was taken, then enter our competition with the name of the business in the subject line by emailing your answer to alex@biglittlemagazineco.uk Closing date is 17 January 20 when the winner will be notified and announced on our facebook page www.facebook.com/FleetLife. The winning business will be revealed in our February 2020 issue.

Antiques Road Trip visits Serendipity in Fleet Customers visiting Serendipity recently, were surprised to find a film crew and the charismatic Charlie Ross on the premises filming for the BBCs Antiques Road Trip. Charlie arrived in a Vintage Triumph 2000 and charmed staff and customers alike. He spent around 2 hours looking around the 10 sales rooms and found various interesting items to talk about including an extremely large vintage cow bell and a beautiful boxed set of Mappin and Webb
silver teaspoons. Although Charlie did buy an item to take to auction, we are sworn to secrecy about its identity until the programme is aired in February. Picture shows Charlie Ross with Jane Shilling, owner of Serendipity and Daisy’s Tea Room, Fleet.

Happy New Year to you all! Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing Let’s make January an amazing start to the year! It really annoys me when the media say it’s the most depressing month of the year, and they usually say the worst day falls around my birthday at the end of the month when everyone is waiting for payday and the weather is miserable. If you’ve been thinking 2020 to change job or have a
Revitalise Your Life
complete career change, it
By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching
is the year you’re going
can feel a bit daunting. Any change can feel scary but when it comes to the way you earn money and how much, we can pile the pressure on and that’s often what keeps us stuck where we are.
Many of my clients bring their fears into coaching sessions, when they’re considering leaving paid employment to start out on their own. Often, they are looking for a job title to attribute to what they want to do, a box to fit in, or a label, as it provides some sense of comfort and reassurance. I went through the same process when I left my 20-year career behind and I remember it being really uncomfortable! Through my studies, training and experience I’ve learnt that it’s a combination of the basic human need to feel a sense of belonging, left brain and linear thinking and starting to break free from the institution and conditioned way of thinking we have become used to. Ironically, it’s because we’re starting to break free of ‘the system’ that we’re looking to make a big change in the first place. It’s just that no-one ever said we could or taught us how. So where can you start? It always starts with you, your wants, your needs and values. You may need to make some compromises or sacrifices but without knowing what it is that you want and need to be happy, you will circle right back to the beginning and start
Welcome to my first column of the year helping you to revitalise your life! thinking all over again how you can make a change and be happy. It doesn’t need to be anything complex, jot down the first thoughts that come to you about what you want in your life, who you want to be, what you want to achieve (ignoring whether you think you can or not!) and what makes you happy. Then write down what’s important to you – these are your values. You may want to do one list for work and one for home. Stop thinking about what job title you can fit into and think about what you want to achieve. I use my job title very loosely and generally introduce myself to people as ‘I help people to escape corporate life and set up on their own’. If someone asks, I’ll share the various ways in which I help people to do that – blending NLP, coaching and intuitive guidance to help identify true passions, build self-belief and gain insight into next steps. When you break free of the limitations and boundaries you’ve set for yourself all sorts of amazing opportunities open up. I’d also recommend opening your thinking to more than one thing. I worked with a client recently who wanted to set up her own business but was struggling to decide on
whether to go with fitness training or social media support for small business. I asked her why she felt she couldn’t consider doing both. On the basis that your time is yours and your business runs by your rules, stop trying to fit your new career into a traditional model. Surely, you’ve established that doesn’t work for you already? I was reminded of a quote recently that inspired me to live my life my way and create my business in a way that worked for me, as well as my clients: “Tetris – the more you fit in, the more you disappear” Dare to be you and dare to be different. Wishing you your best year yet,

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?
ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.
Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.
Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.

Garden Goings On by Susan Bonnett, Garden Advisor January is a great time to look at your garden and decide if it is doing a good job of making you smile. I firmly believe that your garden should be a place that brings you joy. If it feels out of control, then acting now will mean it is a place you enjoy being in this summer.
Before... Making changes to a garden can feel like a massive challenge, but the reality is that small changes can make a huge difference. The best way I can prove to you that you do not need to rip your garden apart to make it look special is to show you a before and after picture of a client’s garden. In March 2018, Mrs L had a garden where the goal post and coloured plastic were dominant. The flowerbed looked unloved because Mrs L was not sure what to plant to make the kind of garden she wanted. By June 2019, Mrs L had a garden that she was in love with; she was super proud of her flowers and it had not cost a fortune as many of the them had been grown from seed, or via very cost-effective plug plants bought by mail-order. When clients ask me to help them to change their gardens, what do I do? Whilst a garden designer will have their own style, I don’t.
14 | Fleet Life January 2020
I use my knowledge as a professional gardener to help clients discover what style suits them and their garden, and then I advise them how to achieve the look. How do I help? Well, a fresh eye will see things that the garden owner no longer sees, and I have the technical knowledge to tell you what plants will want to grow in your garden. I will help you to find what kind of plants you like, what colours you like, what flower shapes you enjoy, and then put these altogether in a planting plan that is like painting by numbers but with plants. In Mrs L’s garden, we did not change the shape or size of the flowerbed, and we found the most cost-effective method for her to make the changes she wanted to make. But if time was short because of a family event, I
Susan Bonnett
...After would utilise the trade accounts I have with various local nurseries and I would encourage early planting of smaller pots because it will keep the costs down. Plants also tend to do better if they are planted outside when they are smaller and more adaptable. What makes me happiest is when a client tells me that they have the garden they have always wanted. If you would like my help do give me a call, I am based in Farnborough and would be very happy to visit you on a no obligation basis; to discuss how you want to change your garden.

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE COLD? Before we see the first flurries of snow it’s wise to get your home prepared, whether you own or rent the property. The cold winter months may highlight problems with the property that can be frustrating for tenants and expensive for landlords.
LANDLORDS As a Gas Safety Certificate is a legal requirement, it makes sense to have the boiler serviced at the same time as your Gas Safe engineer is doing the gas safety check. Central heating issues can be cheaper and quicker to fix in the summer, and you might avoid costly call out charges when everyone else is having boiler problems. Adequate loft insulation and lagging to pipes can make your property less vulnerable to winter conditions. It will also mean your tenants are warmer and their fuel costs are lower – making for a happier tenant (happy tenants are more likely to stay longer!). Get guttering, down pipes and accessible drains checked – build up of leaves and debris can result in water entering the property and causing long term damage. Ventilation is as important in the winter as in the summer. Lack of ventilation may lead to damp and mould especially if the property does not have a tumble dryer available. Inspections of the property and advising to tenants about potential issues can help.
TENANTS If you don’t know where your mains water stop-cock is then look now, you will need to turn this off in the event of a burst pipe. If you’ve got an outside tap, turn off the supply to the tap if you can, and then turn the tap open so there’s no water left in the pipe. If you see damp patches inside the house report them quickly. Damp patches may not be caused by water from outside of the property but instead condensation forming on cold parts of the walls. Check your contents insurance. With flood problems it may be your landlords responsibility to rectify damage caused to the property by a flood but if your contents are damaged you will have to foot the bill for their replacement Research by Direct Line recently found that those aged 18 – 34s are the least likely to have made preparations for winter in their home. It may seem like someone else’s responsibility but it could make for a chilly winter if you haven’t followed some simple tips. Finances for Life
Getting Started with Investing My dad was a commuter. Every day he travelled up to his desk in the City from our home in Surrey. I never knew what he actually did (I probably wasn’t interested at the time), but his involvement in the financial world clearly rubbed off and he gave me and my sisters a good handle on spending and saving. So a few years later when my

of money to us!) we took the next step beyond savings and invested it, with the help of a local insurance broker. We were aware that the outcome was less certain, but with some savings behind us and two incomes we felt ready to take the leap, hoping for better returns than from savings. You won’t any longer find an insurance broker who will sell you an investment over the counter (fortunately), but the principles still apply. Investing is not a replacement for savings, which remain important for easy access, and there is no predefined outcome - indeed, values can (and do) go down as well as up. But over a long enough time
Just like a pension, you can invest a regular amount in every month, or you could invest a lump sum. Either way, there might be various reasons for investing. Such as: • Achieving better growth than savings • Saving tax - perhaps Income Tax, or Inheritance Tax • Providing an income Investing is pretty simple at its heart. A good starting point for

New Year - New You with Hartwood Health It is a New Year and time for many of us to start to commit to making changes for the better, whether this is becoming healthier, becoming fitter or spending more quality time with your family but for how long will these changes last? Do you reach your goals? The most important thing about achieving your goals is taking consistent action – no matter how small these actions are. However, these actions must be sustainable in the long term or you won’t stick with them. So, let’s apply this to probably one of the most popular New Year resolutions - losing weight. Write down your overall goal e.g. you want to lose 4 stone (56 lbs). A sensible weight loss is approximately 1 lb per week (anywhere between 1/2 – 2 lbs per week is a good weight loss). Based on this it will take you 56 weeks to achieve your goal weight; it is not something that is achievable overnight! You can then break this down into smaller goals - how much weight you would like to have lost in 6 weeks, 3 months, six months and 1 year. These then seem like more realistic and achievable goals. In order to lose weight, you need to create an energy deficit – that is you need to be consuming less
energy than you are expending. An energy deficit of 500 kcal per day will help you to lose approximately 1lb of fat per week. You can achieve an energy deficit in a number of ways: • Calorie counting • Reducing portion sizes • Eat fewer snacks • Have fewer takeaway meals • Reduce your alcohol intake • Increase your physical activity Avoid fad and crash diets. There will be a plethora of them being promoted in the New Year, many of them will be endorsed by celebrity figures to add “credibility”. These diets are usually very low in energy and involve cutting out food groups. They generally will not provide you with a balanced intake which can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Long term low energy intake will slow down your metabolism, so you find it more difficult to lose weight. Aim to eat a healthy, balanced diet consuming a wide variety of foods in the right proportions. Healthy eating doesn’t equal weight loss if you are still consuming too much energy!
making a financial investment helps with commitment. • Recognise, record and celebrate your successes along the way. For example, being able to fit into a pair of jeans that you couldn’t fit into before or walking 20 minutes without stopping. • Always keep your end goal in mind!
Commitment + Consistency = Change Paula Wood is a registered dietitian and owner of Hartwood Health, a multi-disciplinary healthcare centre. Here, the team of highly qualified therapists listen to a client’s concerns and offer the highest quality of care. They provide excellent advice and treatment on a wide range of health issues: • Dietetics • Counselling • Paediatric Dietetics • Hypnotherapy • Physiotherapy • Massage (various types) • Sports Therapy
Committing to action is key and you may want to try some of the below to help you:

Fleet Life meets... Tracey Shrimpton, Director of Sixth Sense Marketing and Fleet Business Improvement District (BID) Manager Have you always had an interest in running your own business? My husband Nick and I founded our company in 2014 and I have to admit I spent the first six months wondering what on earth I had done. I had left a job I loved, with a good salary, and felt like I had started from scratch. However, since getting involved in some of the great community events in Fleet and meeting other passionate business owners, I haven’t looked back. Knowing you are making a difference to businesses is so rewarding. Also, having the ultimate flexibility and not having to ask for time off for things is a definite positive. Tell us more about the Fleet Business Improvement District (BID), for which you are the manager. The Fleet Business Improvement District (BID) was formed in 2017 and is funded and led by businesses in central Fleet. In 2015, a group of businesses got together to form the Fleet Business Forum, which was one of the recommendations of the organisation Fleet Future. They decided to explore becoming a Business Improvement District (BID), which required over 300 businesses in a defined area in Fleet to vote on a business plan covering activity such as promoting the town, providing business support, delivering events and making improvements. The majority voted in favour and so the BID was formed. The BID is led by a volunteer board representing a cross section of business in the BID area as well as Hart District Council and Fleet Town Council. The BID’s main achievements of 2019? Through the BID, the business community in Fleet has provided many events and activities, from Santa’s Post Office and the summer wild animal and dinosaur trails to the Food Festival, which is now a

two day event attracting 11,000 people into Fleet. We extended the Christmas lights as well as first aid/ mental health first aid training for local businesses. The BID promotes the town through the website and social media (FindYourFleet) and encourages people to support high street businesses and keep the money local. The BID Directors, who are also business owners in the town, consult regularly with businesses and champion issues that create challenges for businesses such as parking, and focus on activity to save businesses money, as well as ensuring the voice of business is heard on important issues for the town.
Top tips for anyone already running, or wanting to start, their own business? Go for it – if you have a passion for what you do then follow your dreams. Seek out people you admire and don’t be afraid to ask them for advice. And always give back – whether that is community activity, charity work or advising others just starting out.
In what areas do you think Fleet needs the most work? Our independent businesses are something everyone loves about Fleet, but the high street is such a tough place to do business right now. The challenges from online shopping as well as high business rates and changing consumer behaviour mean that shops and restaurants are having to work much harder just to stand still. More needs to be done from national government to reform the business rates system and, at a local level, councils, businesses and the community working together to bring about positive change in the town.
What would you do to improve or change Fleet? Fleet has so much to offer but I’d love to see a cinema in Fleet and I also heard a rumour there might be a park run starting – that would be great.
Everyone always comments on the community spirit in Fleet, have you seen this firsthand? The community spirit in Fleet is incredible – we have so many brilliant organisations and events that make such a difference in the town and I have been lucky enough to be able to meet many of the people involved. I’ve always been a ‘glass half full’ person so I would love to see everyone championing the positive aspects of our town that make it such a wonderful community to live and work.
What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? Our children have grown up in Fleet and it is an amazing place. We are surrounded by countryside and everyone is so friendly. I love the fact that whenever you go into Fleet you are bound to see someone you know.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? A great piece of advice from my husband as well as many other successful business people: “You have two ears and one mouth and you should use them in that ratio” – ie listen far more than you talk. What is the most trouble you have ever been in? When I started secondary school someone had a stink bomb – we let it off and the teachers were furious. The boy who brought in the stink bomb admitted it was his and took the blame for letting it off, even though he hadn’t. So while I didn’t exactly get into trouble, I felt very guilty for not telling the truth which I think is one of the reasons why I feel so strongly now that the truth, and facts, are so important.
