Fleet Life meets...

Emily Gregory, owner of Baby Love Photography – your local family and baby photographer who has just been voted ‘Best Photographer in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.’ Please tell us a bit about who you are and what you do? Hello, I’m Emily and I am a mum-oftwo and award-winning photographer living here in Fleet. When and why did you decide to set up Baby Love Photography? I’ve always loved photography, but as a teenager I decided to pursue a career in journalism. Whilst working as a journalist in Cardiff, my passion for photography returned and I invested in a few hours of training to teach me the basics. Through my job I had many famous contacts so I utilised these – providing Welsh celebrities with images in return for publicity. When we moved to Fleet I got a job in PR to pay the bills, but three months after having my firstborn Flynn, I started using my maternity leave to update my portfolio – this time focusing fully on family photography (something I now had a vested interest in after becoming a mum). I built up quite a good name for myself over the next six months, which was lucky as I found out I was being made redundant shortly before I was due back at work. It was at this point that I decided my main focus going forward would be photography – and I haven’t looked back since! As a family photographer, what exactly do you specialise in? I photograph all things family related – so maternity and newborn right through to babies, children, families and the fabulously fun (and messy) first birthday cake smashes. I have a garden studio here in Fleet which is where most of my newborn photoshoots take place but I also photograph at clients’ home and in outdoor locations across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.

6 | Fleet Life August 2019

We hear congratulations are in order after recently winning a prestigious award? Thank you. Yes, I was recently named ‘Best Photographer in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’ at the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2019. Honestly, I was over the moon when I found out! They’re the UK’s most prestigious lifestyle awards, championing the very best local businesses across 21 counties. To know that people love my work enough to vote for me and help me win feels amazing. I’m so fortunate to always receive the most heartwarming feedback – both from clients and the general public who come across my photographs – but to win this award means so much to me as it’s kind of a pat on the back for all the hard work I’ve put into Baby Love Photography since launching it four-and-a-half years ago.

Is there anything you want to share with Fleet that perhaps we should know? Apologies but I’m about to say the C word… Christmas! I joke, but seriously, as a family photographer I start thinking about the festive season about now. Every year I run Christmas mini sessions from my studio – these are 30 minute photoshoots (at a heavily discounted rate) which provide the perfect photographs for Christmas cards and presents. They’re extremely popular so I have to open my waiting lists early Autumn and then start shooting in October to ensure all photos are taken and edited in time to get cards made and prints framed. Keep an eye on my FB page (www.facebook. com/babylovephotography2014) for further details on these or to book a slot.

How did you celebrate winning? Well, obviously there were a few glasses of Prosecco drunk on the evening I found out! I was also invited to a lovely little awards ceremony in Lymington to meet the editor of Muddy Stilettos Hampshire and to receive my certificate alongside all the other Hampshire winners. Cue more Prosecco – and some super cute Muddy Stilettos themed biscuits!

Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? The Fox & Hounds every time. Beautiful home-cooked food, generous portions, reasonably priced… and when the sun is out we love strolling down there along the canal and picking a table outside so the kids can play while we enjoy a nice glass of something chilled.

What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? It has to be the people. I’ve met some of the loveliest families through my work as a photographer – and also been lucky enough to take photos in some truly beautiful homes. The sense of community spirit is amazing and honestly, I don’t think I could have won my award and beaten what was some very tough competition if it wasn’t for the people of Fleet getting behind me and giving me their vote.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? ‘Everything happens for a reason’. This rings so true with me. When I was made redundant, naturally it was a worrying time but I had a feeling everything would work out and just look at me now! Life definitely has a way of always working out for the best. Summertime... and the living is

easy... And the mozzies are biting!! Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing Hot tips for keeping the bugs away and looking after Summer skin, naturally.

The most fascinating and effective by far is Tea Tree Oil: an indigenous plant of Australia found in Queensland and New South Wales. The amazing benefits of Tea Tree Oil were discovered by the aborigines over 200 years ago. There is a story that they used to bathe in ‘magic lakes’ where the water healed their skin. It was actually the oil in the leaves of the Tea Tree bush that had fallen into the water, that was healing their skin. There was no medication at that time, so the tribal people relied on the power of the plants and nature, as their medicine. Tea Tree Oil is now recognised as one of the most powerful, natural antiseptics known to man, which will kill all bacteria, fungal infections, parasites and will stop viruses in their tracks. It has amazing healing properties, so is safe to use on any breakage of the skin; any burns,(including sunburn), bites ,stings, spots, heat rash, shaving rash, blisters, piercings, the list is endless! I call it my ‘first-aid kit in a bottle’.

(Always use diluted on children under 12) So, my Tea Tree Oil products are essential travelling companions on any of my holidays! And they are so good that I always find someone else in need and give them away! If you are shaving or waxing before you go on your hols, a good Tea Tree Oil Lotion will take down any skin irritation or rash, making sure you are bikini ready! The best aftersun is a Tea Tree Oil Lotion, because it will take the heat out, and the Tea Tree Oil will start to heal the burnt skin. It is also great as an insect repellent in the evening. This essential oil smells like Eucalyptus, which insects do not like, so wearing a tea tree lotion in the evening will stop you getting bitten. Wearing neat Tea

Tree oil on your pulse points – wrists, and around the ankles, will help to scare the mozzies away! Strong perfume actually attracts them, so be careful. If you do get bitten, a dab of tea tree oil on the bite will soon stop the itch. I have always used a professional brand called Australian Bodycare, and was their guest presenter on QVC shopping channel for 6 years, so I know lots about it. If you haven’t tried Tea Tree Oil products before, please do take some away with you on your travels. I am sure you will be impressed! I honestly couldn’t live without it! Happy Holidays!!

Open Mornings and Taster Days at St Nicholas’ School Some of my favourite times in the term are when we open our doors to prospective parents and pupils and we are able to see St Nicholas’ School through their eyes. We feel a real sense of excitement and anticipation at these events; it’s similar to the feeling you get when you have bought a child the gift that they really wanted for Christmas and you can’t wait to see them open it. We just know that our visitors are going to love what they see when they come to visit and to spend the day with us. Our themed taster days are a great way for pupils to come and experience what we get up to, mixing together with other potential starters and also with our existing pupils. Next term’s Reception & Year 3 Taster Day is a non-stop, fun-filled timetable of educational activities which will include the use of our outdoor learning spaces so that girls can see how passionate we are about using our gorgeous setting. It will also be a chance to meet the teachers and to see why a St Nicholas’ education is such a special one. The feedback we get from our

10 | Fleet Life August 2019

Open Mornings, time and again, is that despite our fabulous results, first-class facilities and array of scheduled it is actually the girls themselves that sell the school to prospective parents and children. At St Nicholas’ School we believe this is how it should be. If you would like to attend our Open Morning, or if you would like to book your daughter into one of our taster days, please do not hesitate to contact our Registrar. Equally, if you’ve just heard great things about the school and want to come and find out what everyone’s raving about, please get in touch.

Last time we looked at how our thoughts create our reality and the impact recognising negative thoughts and choosing more positive, empowering ones can have when we’re making decisions and changes in our lives. I know it’s not easy, I still find myself wandering down the ‘but’ and ‘what if’ path, especially when I’ve got important decisions to make with no guaranteed outcome. The key I think is to recognise when the negative patterns happen and consciously choose alternative thoughts. This month I thought it might be helpful to stay on a similar theme, but specifically looking at money fears and self-belief concerns – these are the 2 most frequently cited reasons why my clients haven’t made the big career change plans they’ve been dreaming of. Fear that they’ll fail, fear of not being taken seriously, that they’re not good enough, clever enough or that they’re not confident enough. The money issue is a big one and it centres around not being able to make enough money, quickly enough.

Garden Goings On

by Susan Bonnett, Garden Advisor

Agapanthus When we moved into our house 10 years ago one of the few flowers we inherited was a lovely blue agapanthus, it was the start of a love affair that continues today.

Agapanthus are a great addition to the garden, they flower in early July just as the roses finish and signal the start of the late summer riot of colour. My current favourites are: Windsor Grey a tall plant at 33” (85cm) which has delicate lavender / grey flowers between July and September, it looks its best in a muted colour scheme of white, blue and green. Double Diamond a short plant of 12” (30cm) with attractive foliage it is great for the front of the border as its white flowers last a couple of months. This plant will sit well with most other plants but I like it best when it is partnered with soft grasses and gladioli nanus ‘The Bride.’ Dr Bouwer has enormous purple blue large flowers of 8” (20cm) flowers in July and August that look great against

This year I am trialling several new agapanthuses:

has a black base to its flower stems and leaves.

Fireworks which came third in Chelsea Plant of the Year 2019 has bicoloured flowers that are white with purple centres that can last up to 12 weeks. I have planted this with my white roses and so far it looks great.

I know that clients can find dead heading confusing. Initially it is worth dead heading to encourage more flowers but once the plant has been in flower for a month then it is unlikely to put up many new flowers so enjoy what you have, including the seed heads until they collapse in the autumn winds.

Strawberry Ice which is a new introduction whose flowers open white and become pink as the flower matures. I want to see how this sits with Verbena Officinalis var. grandiflora ‘Bampton’ one of this seasons must have plants before I add it to my plant list for use in clients gardens. When I am on the nursery I am always tempted by agapanthus that have black in their name but I have yet to find one that stays black. They all open with black buds but then turn blue as they mature. However I have not be able to resist Northern Star which opens later in August and

These plants are happy in half shade or full sun and will do well in containers. The only thing agapanthus don’t like is wet feet. To ensure they flower well you will need to water regularly in late summer, when next years flowers are forming. Then mulch around the plant in late autumn to protect it from frost. I’d love to know if you decide to add Agapanthus to your garden do send me a picture on email or message me, my Facebook page is @SusanBonnettGardenAdvisor

Gut microbes - Friend or Foe?

Microbes = Community of micro-organisms living in the digestive tract Handy glossary: Probiotics = The beneficial bacteria Prebiotics = Food for the beneficial bacteria What are gut microbes? There are approximately one hundred trillion microbes in our gut, contributing to roughly 2 kilos of what we weigh! All these gut microbes work in harmony to produce important chemicals, vitamins and hormones required by the body. Their main function is digesting our food. They feed on the food that we eat. When fed correctly, they will tirelessly produce and churn out chemicals, sending signals to our brain and around our body. These affect our mood and our general health. They can influence whether we are feeling happy or sad, our sleep patterns, intestinal health, gut permeability, weight management, hormone balance and are essential for immune defence. How do we obtain healthy microbes in our gut? Healthy microbes come from plantbased food sources. Plant-based foods (known as ‘prebiotics’) provide us with phytonutrients and fibre which promote the growth and activity of beneficial microbes. When prebiotics reach the large intestine, they are selectively fermented by the microbes. Recent reports from the American Gut Project have shown that eating

Teresa Jayne DipCNM, MBANT, RCNHC www.tjnutritionandhealth.co.uk contact@tjnutritionandhealth.co.uk 07990 665928

more than 30 different plant-based foods per week can give a greater microbial diversity than eating just ten. Each different food type provides a different prebiotic, exerting a different function in the body. This is why a varied diet is important as a variety maximises the regulation and balance of our gut microbiome - they act as ‘fertiliser’ for our microbes. This supports the growth of good microbes and fends off or reduces any bad / unfriendly bacteria that may be lurking. How can you increase the diversity of microbes starting today? As a general rule, a low and slow increase in variety of plant-based foods is recommended. This will allow for a smoother transition to a more colonised gut. If the uptake is too speedy it may trigger digestive symptoms, such as bloating and excess wind. Tip: If you notice digestive symptoms as you slowly increase your range, try sipping on peppermint and chamomile tea. What are beneficial plant-based foods? Examples of plant-based foods (prebiotics). These are mainly sourced from plant-based carbohydrate foods: ♥ cabbages, onions, garlic, leeks ♥ Jerusalem and globe artichokes

These are found in fermented and cultured foods: ♥ miso soup/paste - fermented soybeans and grains ♥ kefir and yogurt - a fermented milk product ♥ sauerkraut - fermented cabbage ♥ kimchi - fermented vegetables ♥ kombucha - fermented tea ♥ raw cheese - unpasteurised ♥ tempeh Microbes - Friend or Foe… Good microbes are definitely our friend! Family Matters An Update on “No fault divorce” As has been widely reported in the press, the government has followed through on its promise to introduce a ‘no-fault’ divorce process (also applicable for judicial separation and civil partnership dissolution). The “Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill (HC Bill 404)” had its second reading in the House of Commons on the 25th June 2019, setting out proposed amendments to the current divorce, judicial separation and civil partnership dissolution law.

Under the current law, a party wishing to divorce must prove to the Court that the marriage has broken down irretrievably by either relying on the fact that the parties have been separated for 2 years and their spouse agrees to the divorce, on five years’ separation, alternatively having to place the blame on the other party, by petitioning on their “unreasonable behaviour” or adultery. Having to attribute the respondent with fault for the marriage breakdown, can make the whole process much more

1. Either party (or both parties jointly) can apply to the court for a ‘divorce order’ on the basis that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. The application must be accompanied by a statement by the applicant (or applicants) confirming that the marriage is over (a statement of irretrievable breakdown).

Mr Sukhpal Singh, Consultant General Surgeon at Spire Clare Park Hospital talks about reflux disease, symptoms, investigations and treatments available. Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is a common problem. It causes heartburn, acid reflux, regurgitation of food especially on stooping, lifting or exercise. Sufferers may experience chest pain and food sticking on the way down (sometimes a symptom of cancer). Other symptoms include a cough, especially at night, hoarseness, the sensation of a lump in the throat, and shortness of breath. GORD may be associated with laryngitis, asthma, and dental erosion. The risk of GORD is increased by age, obesity, fatty foods, smoking, alcohol, coffee or chocolate, pregnancy, hiatus hernia, gastroparesis (stomach paralysis), some medicines and stress. You should seek advice if: • you have severe or frequent symptoms • medications aren’t helping • food sticks • you have persistent vomiting, vomiting blood or unexplained weight loss Long term GORD may cause: • ulcers (sores) and narrowing of the oesophagus • changes in the cells lining the

Oh my GORD! oesophagus (Barrett’s – a pre-cancerous condition) Treatment includes lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, antacids, prescription and over the counter acid inhibitors; these may result in side effects. For carefully selected patients keyhole surgery is very effective. Selection is based on symptoms and: • an endoscopy (a look into your oesophagus) • a barium swallow (an X-Ray) • manometry (checks oesophageal muscular co-ordination) • pH monitoring (Measures the amount of acid that comes up)

pH monitoring Historically, this test was performed by positioning a plastic covered wire through the nose into the oesophagus. The wire would be physically attached to a recorder. The wire would be left in place for 24 – 48 hours. Most patients found this approach embarrassing and very uncomfortable. It resulted in altered behaviour producing unrepresentative results. The probe would often move making the results unreliable. The probe was also prone to come out accidentally. At Spire Clare Park Hospital I offer BRAVO. This new test involves “pinning” a tiny wireless acid monitoring device to the inside of the oesophagus. It is

deployed during an endoscopy and communicates with a wireless receiver. Whenever predefined symptoms are experienced a button on the box is pressed. The subject also keeps a diary of the main symptoms. After 4 – 5 days the box is returned and the information processed by a computer. The test will reveal the amount of acid that rises into the oesophagus and whether or the symptoms are related to acidity. Bravo is well tolerated, in fact most patients don’t feel it and no one around you knows its there. The recordings are obtained over a longer period making them more reliable. The results have ensured successful surgery and avoided unnecessary operations. BRAVO is a significant step forward in investigating patients with GORD and ultimately resulting in better patient selection for laparoscopic (keyhole) hiatus hernia repair and antireflux surgery.

If you have reflux and wish to discuss you symptoms or are considering surgery our private patient team are available to help on 01252 895 490.

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley

252 622052

As a knowledgable Landlord you will hopefully know the importance of having a gas safety check carried out before the start of the tenancy and that an EPC should also be in place. It may come as a shock to learn that if you cannot prove that this has been done and provided to the tenant you may not be able to regain possession of the property. In a recent court case the judge ruled that a Landlord could not prove that a gas safety certificate was given to the tenant before the start of a tenancy. As a result the court would not issue a Section 21 order to grant possession of the property. These issues cannot be rectified subsequently and without vacant possession you would not be able to sell. Under new laws the Landlord or Agent must provide a Gas Safety Certificate, an EPC and the Government How to Rent Guide. This needs be provided in a manner which can be verified. At Honey Lettings the required documents are provided as part of a digital process when the tenancy agreement is issued. By delivering digital documents in this manner we have evidence of the delivery and receipt by the tenant. The new Fitness for Human Habitation checks are also a way of being able to prove you have checked the condition of the property. The 29 point risk assessment will, in the event of a subsequent issue with a property, show that you have shown due diligence to assess property risks. Property checks carried out at regular intervals will establish the ongoing condition of a property. The tenant will have the opportunity to point out potential issues and the condition can be monitored. Without checks you will not be able to prove that the property was fit for human habitation. Under the new tenant fee ban you will no longer be able to charge fees to tenants regardless of fault until the end of the tenancy. If they do cause damage that requires repair the Landlord will need to pay for the repairs and then provide proof of the costs and charges which can then be requested from the deposit. Honey Lettings fully managed service provides quarterly checks which help to establish the condition of the property throughout the tenancy. The checks, with are recorded, also create supporting evidence that the property had been maintained and gives the tenant the opportunity to report any issues. Any faults that do arise are documented and the response and repairs recorded – all evidence if issues do occur later in the tenancy. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?

ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.

Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.

A functioning road network is vital in a predominantly rural constituency like ours. This is why better roads are an integral part of ‘Our Plan’ – six priorities for making North East Hampshire an even better place to live and work for everyone. The biggest challenge for any authority in maintaining its road work is potholes. If you see a pothole, please report it – bit.ly/ roadrepairs – and please also think about joining my team of ‘pothole busters’ to make sure that all our roads are looked after properly. You can find out more about how to do this by sending me an email

Better roads to: email@ranil.uk.

We must think bigger than repairs though, and many of the improvements I know residents would like to see will require extensive planning and funding. With new homes being built in and around North East Hampshire, we cannot wait for our roads to fill up before we tackle the problem. We need to start thinking now about how our infrastructure needs to change and improve – solutions such as redualling the A30 between Hook and Hartley Wintney. I and many others would like to see a proper cycle network connecting Fleet and Yateley to surrounding villages. A narrow

strip at the side ATE U PD of the road just UR M YO isn’t going to F RO MP cut it. If we’re serious about this, we need off-road cycleways wide enough to accommodate walkers as well. This will require imagination and dedication, but I’m up for the challenge. Please let me know if you’d like to help. I’ll be holding meetings and putting together a local ‘highways action team’ in order to pool our ideas and hammer out solutions. If you’re interested, please do get in touch, or attend one of my regular ‘Tell Ranil’ events around the constituency. Details, as ever, are on my website.
