Fleet Life meets... Reshma Perween, a mum-of-two and professional bespoke curtains and blinds maker who is about to open a new soft furnishings shop in Fleet. Please tell us about your background – childhood, education, career etc I grew up in India, but after completing my Bachelor’s degree I got married and came to Fleet to join my husband. As a newcomer, I became active in helping and supporting a local charity shop. This volunteer work was a great experience for me and really helped me adapt to UK life and culture. I also gained retail experience in Morrison’s before getting into the soft furnishings business full time. I am now AMUSF certified as a professional curtain and blind maker. Has interior design always been a passion of yours? Arts and crafts has been in my blood since my childhood. Early on, I used to make home decor items with love and care and even gift them to my family and friends. Now, I really love to make soft furnishings with the same due love and attention. My mission is to bring joy and happiness to every home by transforming them with beautifully crafted made-to-measure items in an affordable way. The thing I love most about transforming a room is understanding customers’ requirements and catering specifically to each individual’s tastes. This tailor made service is unique to every project which really excites me.

You’re about to open up a shop on Fleet High Street – why now?
What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet?
I decided to open a shop so I can help customers in all stages of the buying process – and all under one roof. I believe you should never wait for a perfect moment in your life; just take a moment and try to make it perfect. With the onset of Covid-19, more and more people are working from home. More focus is therefore on home improvement projects including soft furnishings, hence there are some good opportunities out there for me.

Why did you choose Fleet High Street? Fleet and the surrounding areas are expanding, hence we see that Fleet High Street is also changing. The recent implementation of pedestrianisation is, I believe, a good example of making it more welcoming and a great place for shopping. I feel that at the moment there is very limited choice when it comes to bespoke soft furnishings. I really like the location. It is very well connected by both railways and roadways and has an amazing community. No wonder it has been recognised as one of the best places to live in UK.
What would you do to improve or change Fleet? To entice and bring more big names on the high street but at the same time give more support to small businesses. Is there anything you want to share with Fleet that perhaps we should know? We should be proud of and acknowledge all the good things Fleet offers to us and should work as a community to protect it and not take it for granted. Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? Pizza Express is the family’s favourite. We love pizza! What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? There is hope after despair and many suns after darkness.

Separation and divorce are a stressful time for both parties in a marriage, and sometimes tax is the last thing on their minds. However, it is important that as part of the separation process, the couple plan their affairs to move assets between them taxefficiently; otherwise, it could be quite costly.

Last month we looked at how to know when you’re on the right career path for you. This year has given us a lot of food for thought when it comes to thinking about our futures, what’s important to us and what makes us happy and I hope October’s column gave you some inspiration. If you’re still feeling stuck and agonising about your next steps, then read on! This month, I’m going to share how to unlock your intuitive skills to help you with decision-making, managing anxiety and moving forwards. It takes practice, but your intuition is an immensely powerful sense that helps us see through illusion, fogginess and to feel good about ourselves as we become aligned in mind, body and soul. It’s a very freeing and empowering feeling, especially if you have been influenced by other people in your life in the past. Knowing your intuition is like getting to know your best friend you always knew was there but couldn’t quite see. It’s your inner guidance system – much like your sat nav in the car! So how do you unlock it and develop it? It’s much like going to the gym – the more often you go and train the fitter and more toned your body becomes. So, the more you practice the following steps, the stronger and clearer your intuition will become. As your intuition develops and grows, you’ll also start noticing more positive energies and experiences coming to you, a deep sense of gratitude and a strong sense of belonging. This leads to increased self-worth and self-belief all contributing to help make

Welcome to November’s column helping you to revitalise your life! decisions that you feel confident about, regardless of anyone else’s opinions. Follow my 5-step process to unlock your intuition: 1. Get outside in nature It might sound a bit daft, but spending time in nature helps us to reconnect with our individual identity and who we truly are. The slower physical pace allows our brains to slow down, giving us a chance to process emotions, thoughts and experiences. This, in turn, creates space for inspiration and those ‘aha!’ moments come in. 2. Meditate every day There are lots of different ways of meditating and my biggest tip here is do what feels good for you. Essentially, you’re creating calm and space in your mind so however you do that is perfect. Don’t get het up about whether you’re doing it ‘right’, just approach it with a sense of curiosity. Guided meditations are a great way to start and there are plenty of free ones available. 3. Journal Write down your dreams in the morning, what you’re grateful for and anything you experienced in your meditation. It could be an image, a symbol, a memory, a feeling, a story. You might sketch pictures too. This is sometimes referred to as freewriting and it can seem odd in the beginning with
perhaps only a few words coming through. The more you practice, the more will come through. 4. Have fun with it! An intuitive practice does not and arguably should not be a serious thing. The more fun we’re having, the higher our energy frequency and the clearer we can hear / see / feel / understand our inner guidance. Try guessing who’s on the phone before you look or ask for a sign during the day ahead. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 every day I also provide weekly guidance and energy updates in my free Facebook group – please see below for the link. Get the Scoop... Christmas Gifts Think back. When was the last time you were given something you didn’t really like but that you politely squealed positive adjectives about and cooed over some small detail? How often have you found yourself trawling shops with no idea what to buy but feeling like you have to buy something? We really have to stop this. People are what matter and showing them you love them doesn’t have to come from physical gifts and it doesn’t correlate that the more you spend, the more you love them. My advice is this: if you can sit at home without a screen in front of you and you can recall to mind something that you know your giftee would absolutely love and use – then buy it. Whatever it is. It would be wonderful if you could check out its credentials in terms of ethical production and that you seek it from a local business and possibly even consider buying a more eco friendly version – i.e. buying a coffee machine which require beans instead of plastic pods. If, as you sit at home, you feel the need to use google to search ‘gifts for female friend’ or ‘gifts for him’, then stop. Is this person going to have a better life for anything that you might happen to plump for OR would they
much prefer a day, afternoon or even hour of your time? Would a better gift be a course you can do together? A day relaxing at a spa? A dinner reservation for you both or even for both of your families (covid-19 allowing). If there is a distance between you, a voucher for an experience that they’ll remember for far longer than the vase you think she ‘might’ like would be better. Have you considered making some gifts? The time and effort put into creating something can mean far more to the recipient than the gift itself. Can you make them a Christmas cake or some other bakery treat? Can you cook them a stack of meals for their freezer that will take that stress out of the day? Perhaps try a new skill, like sewing or if you’re crafty with wood, maybe make a wine rack, a key holder or some such item. If you think they might be
encouraged to consider some of their own zero waste changes, then zero waste starter kits including produce bags, bars of shampoo or washable bamboo kitchen towels would be a good way forward. Once you have decided on the gift, give some consideration to wrapping. Most wrapping paper has a sheet of laminated plastic across it which makes it non-recyclable. In the UK, enough wrapping paper to wrap Guernsey is sent to landfill every year. Avoid glitter, buy 100% paper wrap which isn’t wrapped itself in plastic, ditch the sticky tape and wrap using washi tape or paper tape and decorate with sprigs of fir or pretty ribbon that you rescue off other gifts throughout the year. Alternatively consider using material with jute to wrap. There are scarves a plenty in charity shops which add an extra gift to the pile. It is also important that we consider the waste around Christmas cards (150 million a year), the food we order and don’t eat and the decorations that we use to adorn our houses (12.5 million m of tinsel each year just for the UK!). We CAN have an amazing Christmas with beautiful decorations that don’t cost the Earth.

Meet Claire Huyton New Director of Pastoral Care at St Nicholas’ School What attracted you to St Nicholas’ School? Having always worked in small independent schools, I think the biggest impact can be made when you get to know your pupils as individuals. Having trained in big comprehensive schools there is a lot to be said for knowing the name of every pupil in the school. Pastoral care is all about individual needs and that takes a team of staff who take the time to listen to and get to know their students. I visited the school several times before taking up the post and good pupil-staff relationships is definitely the thing that stood out to me the most. It gives the school a relaxed, friendly feel. • What changes have you implemented so far or plan to implement during your time as Director of Pastoral Care? Alongside my appointment we have also appointed Heads of Phase for Key stage 3 and 4. Together, we are looking to strengthen the pastoral offering and focus on wellbeing. A new tracking system has been brought in which will allow us to flag warning signs more effectively and monitor the effectiveness of support plans that are put in place. A new PSHE program will give the girls a better understanding of themselves and others, opening up a safe space to discuss some, sometimes challenging subjects. As a Mental Health First Aider I plan to deliver training to staff to ensure they are equipped to spot the early signs of anxiety, depression and eating disorders but also help them to feel able to respond proactively if faced with difficult situations. • What is your greatest strength as Director of Pastoral Care?
I think the traits I have had to rely on the most are being resilient and flexible. There is ‘no one size fits all’ with pastoral care and you need to be willing to adapt your thinking to the individual and their particular need or situation. It takes time to earn pupil’s trust so that they will confide in you, which can be frustrating when you are trying to help, but is definitely worthwhile in the end. Teamwork is key. • How have the challenges facing young people changed since you’ve been in education? When I started teaching, certainly in science, we had modular exams with the first comprising multiple choice questions. Since then the exams have become linear and a huge amount of material has been brought down from the A-level syllabus. With this has come an inevitable drop in the grade boundaries. As such we are teaching material that we never really expect the pupils to master, even when they are attaining top grades. Add in the
advancement in technologies and social media and it is no surprise that self-esteem issues and anxiety are on the rise. This poses a huge barrier to pupils’ academic learning as well as a threat to their wellbeing. • How have recent technological developments affected teaching and education? I think one of the silver linings of lockdown is the way new technologies have been embraced and are now being incorporated into everyday teaching. With years 10 and 11 having school laptops at St Nicholas’ it has allowed me to monitor their work in real time whilst still maintaining social distancing. • How do you relax when you’re not working? I’m a keen horse rider which takes up most of my time. I have two horses currently competing in Eventing. I had high hopes of competing in my first international competition this year but, as with so many things, Covid has put a stop to that.

In order to manage a property effectively you need to visit on a regular basis. At Honey Lettings we make the first visit after one month followed by visits every 3 months. We try and establish from the outset that visits are positive and allow the tenants to point out the issues and concerns they may have. Checks are not as detailed as check-in and check-out inventories but instead look at the general condition whilst making sure the tenant is looking after the property correctly. We believe that establishing checks at regular intervals encourages the tenant to keep to their obligations. What do we look for : Landlords/Agents maintain a legal responsibility for the property and this includes who is living there. If more than three unrelated people are living at the property this would constitute a HMO (Home of multiple occupancy) and as a result should be licensed. This may well breach of the tenancy agreement however the legal responsibility still falls on the Landlord. A more regular occurrence is for a partner to move in who is not on the tenancy. If it’s just for weekends this may be fine but when it becomes a more permanent arrangement they should be added to the tenancy agreement and the relevant Right To Rent checks carried out. Pets are another addition which won’t be spotted without checking. We see a variety of pets from goldfish, snakes, mice up to large dogs. Fish are often not seen by tenants as an issue but in small flats a large tank of water can add to damp and mould issues. Larger pets are likely to result in the need for additional cleaning and de-infestation at the end of a tenancy. On walking into the property, if the tenants have been smoking it is immediately noticeable. Tenants may think that smoking out of window is a workaround but if your property smells of stale tobacco it may make it harder to re-let. Temperature and humidity are also noted. Cold properties may freeze and over warm properties tend to suffer from mould issues. Condensation on windows is a sure sign that the property needs airing and that damp and mould issues may follow.
Regular visits will highlight damage including marks on carpets and walls. Fair wear and tear need to be factored in but if the property has heavy wear and marks after six months steps need to be taken. The garden is another area that, if left to it’s own devises, may be difficult to sort out. The grass needs to be cut regularly in the growing season and the paving areas weeded. The tenant may not have the skills but they can arrange to pay to have this work completed on their behalf, to keep to their obligations within the tenancy agreement.
The most common issue is failing silicon around baths and showers and at the back of the kitchen sink. If caught in time this is not a major job but if not checked the first report from the tenant may be water through the ceiling. Better Photography

Hi, I’m Kim from Kim Byrne Photography and welcome to this series of Better Photography. With the night’s drawing in and fewer bright sunny days I thought this would be a good time to look at long exposures. Have you seen images of light trails from traffic, star streaks in the sky or water that looks silky smooth and wanted to create something similar yourself? Well today we’ll look at how you can create fabulous images in low light conditions using long exposure. This can be done any time of the year and under any conditions, even on bright sunny days by using filters to reduce the amount of light hitting the cameras sensor. But we’ll look at how to do them without the need to purchase expensive filters and holders. You will need to know how to change your camera to Bulb mode. If you have a tripod this will help, but if not, take a few minutes to look around where you’re shooting to find something to balance your camera on.
A cable release for your camera is really useful, if you don’t have one you will need to hold the shutter button for exposures longer than 30 seconds.
Tips • Use your lowest ISO to reduce noise/grain in your images. • Use a tripod to hold the camera steady and remember to switch your lens image stabilisation off while using the tripod. • Shoot in Manual/Bulb. • Shoot at f8 - f11, try not to go over f16 as diffraction from the lens may start to show.
Get ready to take your shot • Frame your subject, and in Aperture priority half press your shutter button, write down your exposure reading (Aperture & shutter speed). • If your exposure is less than 30
seconds press the shutter and let the camera do the exposure while in Aperture priority. If the exposure is higher than 30 seconds you will need to use Bulb. Your camera/lens will have focussed, to avoid this changing switch your lens to manual focus. • Using a cable release start your exposure, if you don’t have one press and hold the shutter button, time and close the shutter when the exposure time is reached. • For accuracy check your exposure using the histogram not just the back of the screen. • Depending on the available light your images may have a blue or orange cast. This will be from the colour temperature of the available light. You can change it with your White Balance or in post processing.

Before heading out remember to check the weather forecast and wrap up warm. Try taking some long exposure photography of light trails from cars/buses. Or a side street that’s dimly lit. Try getting someone to walk through your shot and see if you can create a ‘ghost’ in your images.

pressure due to a funding shortfall. The canal is jointly owned by Surrey and Hampshire CC’s who are responsible for its upkeep.
How can people help?
Funding has always been tight and will only get worse as the council’s budgets are reduced. Therefore, there is a real risk that the canal could fall back into disuse if nothing is done.
Become a member – This can easily be done via our website at https://basingstokecanal.org.uk/get-involved/ become-a-member/ where the benefits of becoming a member are detailed. It costs just £15p/a for an individual adult or £20 for a household. Under 18’s are free.
The Basingstoke Canal Society exists to help keep the canal open for all users and provides much needed assistance with volunteer labour on such tasks as towpath clearance and maintenance, weed clearing, bank repair and with many other maintenance issues. The Society also runs two trip boats (when Covid permits) which are crewed by volunteers and provide much needed income to the society. However, we need more members and volunteers to assist us.
Make a one-off donation – Phase 1 of our planned improvements is a project to place 10 information signs along the 32-mile waterway. The signs will feature key points of interest, the history of each stretch and maps marking car parks, villages and the ways and rules for enjoying the space in a respectful way. Rosie’s Good Reads Toubab Tales by Rob Baker is a travelogue set in Mali between 2009 to 2012. Musician Rob Baker and his family lived in Bamako, Mali’s capital city. Rob travels around the country investigating local music, instruments and songs. It offered an unusual theme to a travel style book. Through Rob’s work we get to learn about everyday living in the city of Bamako and about travelling to more remote places. An interesting book and one which had me reaching for an atlas to understand more about Mali and its neighbouring countries. Finding Edward by Suzanne McKenna Link is a contemporary romance. When Eddie’s grandmother dies, she leaves him two tasks; go to Positano, Italy to search for his father, and use his inheritance to enrol in art college. The author’s creation of vibrant characters and beautiful Italian settings which made this book come alive. They took me right to the Amalfi coast and I could almost taste the coffee, hear the Italian spoken and see the amazing landscapes. If you want a piece of escapism reading in an idyllic setting, then I can highly recommend this book.

From A Wonky Path To An Open Road is a travelogue and semi autobiography of BAFTA award winning film producer Janey de Nordwall. In 2019 Janey drove her 1970s VW campervan on a soul-searching six-week trip around Scotland. For most of us driving off over the horizon in a campervan is just a dream, so going on a virtual trip with Janey, particularly in 2020, was lovely. Janey took an inspiring solo trip with just her cat for company; they stayed in campsites and even wild camped, took ferries to some of the islands, visited local breweries and distilleries and met plenty of generous and helpful people. This book would make a lovely gift, not just for those considering solo travel. The Hunted by Gabriel Bergmoser is an action thriller set in the Australian outback. Frank runs a service station, which is a lonely life but one that he chose. However, his granddaughter is currently staying with him; they’re strangers and hardly communicate. All this changes on the day a young woman covered in blood collapses on the forecourt. Maggie met Simon in a small town bar; they were both looking for ‘something’ and agreed to travel onward together, but what if that ‘something’ brought unimaginable terror on them all?

businesses this Christmas! Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing Sadly I have heard of many local beauty salons who have not been able to survive this year. Fortunately, I work on my own, which has been a blessing , as I only have myself to look after, and I will survive! This year has forced business owners to be innovative in the way that they promote and run their businesses, so I am asking you to buy from smaller retailers and salons if possible this Christmas to help us all to survive. Even though we won’t be having the Christmas parties we are used to, I am sure we will be celebrating Christmas big time! I know I will, so get your beauty treatments booked in as usual. We can have a few small gatherings of 6, if we are still allowed in December, instead of one big party! And why not dress up more? I have so many clothes that I haven’t worn this year because we haven’t been out anywhere! The image of the girl taking her bins out in her ballgown during lockdown sticks with me! So think about buying beauty Gift Vouchers as a lovely experience for your friends and family. Small denominations are fine, so they don’t have to be expensive. Many of us have been struggling with anxiety during this lockdown: a gentle massage, neck and shoulders or head and some nurturing time to yourself being cared for, can work wonders. I think live promotional events in salons and spas will not be going
ahead this year, due to lack of space and difficulty to socially distance, so your continued support to purchase Christmas gifts from us will be important.

We all suffer with dry hands and skin in the Winter due to the heating and cold weather, and of course, washing our hands so much, so the gift of a lovely hand cream or body lotion always goes down well. I will be making my own Christmas crackers again this year, which is easy and great fun, and small tubes of hand cream fit in the crackers perfectly! Small items of make up also work. For the guys, small bottles of spirits are good. Then add a scratch card in each, a joke, a hat and a snap, and they are done! I highly recommend having a go and getting creative. The Range and
