ehl meets... Liz Gill, owner of Balloonable; a home-based balloon business creating unique and bespoke designs for every occasion – including this year’s Great Ormond Street Hospital Christmas party! Please tell us a bit about your childhood, education, background, career etc? I grew up in Essex and went on to study a BAEd in Primary Education at Reading University. Here I met my now-husband and we moved to London together to start our careers. I taught in two primary schools over nine years before stopping to look after our baby twins at home. At the end of 2016 we moved to Fleet, where we have been happily settled ever since. We had another baby in 2018 and in the summer of the same year, I decided to set up Balloonable. How and why did you come to set up Balloonable? Having been out of full-time paid employment for just over three years, I decided that I wanted to do something other than ‘being mum.’ I have always loved balloons so I looked into balloon courses. I quickly realised that it could be something I could do from home, around my children, that brings in some money to the household. What makes balloonable stand out? Balloonable is a huge labour of love for me. It is my mission to provide customers with top quality products, tailored to their ideas and wishes. I love being able to put my own creativity into everything I produce and I’m a HUGE perfectionist – the balloons won’t leave my home until I’m satisfied they are just right! Whenever I get a message or review from a customer, my heart skips a beat. It is just the most brilliant feeling to know that a perfect stranger appreciates what I have to offer.

6 | ehl February 2020

You were recently invited to decorate the Great Ormond street Hospital Christmas party - please tell us more about this? When I started Balloonable, I joined BAPIA (Balloon and Party Industry Alliance) for insurance and other benefits. They have been decorating the GOSH Christmas parties for the last seven years. Each year they ask members to register their interest in helping and then randomly select around 25 members for the job. Being a total newbie to the industry, I was keen to put my name into the pot and was absolutely thrilled to be picked. On the day, we arrived at a London hotel to meet with the organisers from BAPIA plus representatives from three top balloon manufacturers. Throughout the day, we got to bring ideas to life to totally transform the venue into a Christmas Wonderland. There were balloons everywhere – from floor to ceiling. I got to meet so many wonderful people from the balloon industry, learnt new skills and got to work with lots of products I hadn’t come across before. Knowing that we were creating something for so many children linked to the Hospital was extremely humbling. They all had a fabulous time and being able to say I was a tiny part of that is just magical. Is it important for you to give something back? Being able to offer my skills and services to charity seems like a great way to give a little joy to others through balloons. I have also been able to donate some balloons (via a brilliant Facebook group Fleet – Acts of Kindness) to some lovely people in Fleet, who for one reason or another

needed a little pick-me-up. Plans for 2020? I’ve tried to keep my plans and goals for 2020 fairly simple. I want my business to continue to grow and I want every customer to be beyond satisfied with my work. I plan to continue developing my own skills by attending further training and I hope to look into some more networking opportunities with small businesses in the local area. I love what Fleet BID does for our community and find it really inspiring the difference people in business can make to a town. What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? My family and I moved here in 2016 and we have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the community. Fleet is a really friendly town with lots to offer. I love that I can walk to the high street and visit the Library with my children, do a bit of shopping, grab a coffee and then head to the Views to enjoy the park – all in just a morning! Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? In the short time I’ve lived here, Fleet Pond is up there as my favourite place to visit. My children love feeding the ducks and finding painted rocks there and I love the beautiful scenery throughout the year. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? That’s an easy one! Dory from Finding Nemo has a philosophy on life that speaks to me on many levels: “Just keep swimming!” Interview by Emily Gregory of Baby Love Photography, www.baby-love-photography.com

Better Photography with Kim

Hi I’m Kim from Kim Byrne Photography and I’d like to welcome you to a new series designed to help you take

February

better photos with your camera. For this first article I’m going to give you some non-technical tips that can make an enormous difference. So, if you are new to this please keep your camera on auto for now and let’s get started! Your camera is smart, but it needs help from you. You may have heard that you need to use manual, or learn about aperture, shutter speeds and ISO to take great photos. But for now, modern phones and cameras have amazing auto settings and there is much more to photography than learning how to shoot in manual mode. Now, onto my first 4 tips… 1. Make your subject stand out There are lots of ways to do this but for today I’ll mention just a few easy ones for you to think about. Isolate your subject from the background by getting down low and shooting up at them. Get in nice and close and fill the frame with your subject, with young children shoot down on them and fill the frame with their smiling faces. 2. The Edges of the Frame When taking a shot pay attention to the edges of your frame not just the main subject of the image. Does everything

Photo Challenge around the edge look how you want it too, have you chopped something off, is there something creeping into the image that will distract your eye from the key subject? If there’s something you don’t like, move your position or move your subject and look again.

Here’s a little challenge for you to try each week while thinking about the points mentioned above. You can shoot indoors or out, you interpret what the word says to you, but most of all, have fun and don’t over think things. Week 1 Shadows – look at

3. The Background Pay attention to your background, especially in a portrait. Is there anything growing from your subject’s head such as a tree or lamppost or does the horizon cut through the middle of their head? If you notice any of these try changing your shooting angle, position or move your subject.

how the direction of the light

4. Watch the light Check where the light is coming from. If it’s a sunny day you don’t want your subject facing the sun or they will squint to protect their eyes, move them in to slight shade or turn them at 45 degrees to the sun so they are side lit. Love the shade, it can be your friend and give interesting shadows to your image. It can also give depth and shape to objects.

straight ahead so instead look

changes shadows, making them sharper, longer or shorter. Week 2 Red – look for anything that’s red but rather than photograph it straight-on look at it from different angles. Week 3 Look up – we normally walk around looking up and see what catches your eye. Week 4 Get low – Week 3 was about looking up, so this week get down low and look at things from a different angle.

Elvetham Heath Primary School News

Welcome to Year Three! During our English lessons, we loved reading the story of ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker where a girl uses her magic crayon to draw the next part of her adventure. After making our own magic pencils, we imagined where our magical journey would take us and wrote the rest of the story. We are very proud of the class books that we made that contain all of our stories so we can share them with others.

Our theme of journeys continued into our work in geography where we have been using atlases and globes to locate countries around the world and learn more about the countries that make up Europe. The fabulous new wall map of the world that is displayed in our main school corridor has helped us with this.

In science we have been finding out all about light. We loved being scientists and setting up our own investigations. Finding the best material to make a lightproof den was great fun! It was the first time we had used a light meter to measure the amount of light. We found out that the blankets made the best lightproof den – they were even better than the silver foil sheet. It is the case that virtually all plastics can be recycled but as with any material collected, there has to be a market for it. This is why many plastics are not processed.

If you’d like to know about local collection points for some of the items not collected kerbside, check out Terracycle or Keep Hart Clean (on facebook) where you will find further information. It is also worth noting that plastics (and paper) only have a certain lifespan and can consequently only be recycled – and in most case downcycled into lesser quality items – a finite number of times. This is not the case when it comes to metals and glass which is why, on some levels, they are better materials to use.

Fun Facts from recyclingbins.co.uk: • It takes 70% less energy to recycle paper instead of using virgin equivalent • Recycling a single can, will save enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours • It takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminium cans than it does to make new ones. • Worldwide, 4 billion trees are cut down every year for paper. That’s one per cent of the Amazon Rainforest – every single year • More than 28 billion glass bottles and jars end up in landfills every year, which is the equivalent to the Empire State Building filling up every 3 weeks • Every tonne of glass recycled saves 246kg of CO2 emissions

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley

Property Checks

01

252 622052

Most of us have seen one of the many TV programmes telling us horrible tales about ‘Rogue Landlords’ and ‘Nightmare Tenants’ but it’s important to keep these horror stories in perspective. The common factor is that either tenants haven’t reported problems or Landlords have not checked. Regular property visits are essential to ensure that repairs are spotted early on so that minor issues are dealt with promptly to avoid major work and big expense. Sometimes tenants may be reluctant to flag up a repair through fear that this might affect their tenancy, so it’s important that as a Landlord, or your letting agent make regular checks at Honey Lettings we recommend every three months throughout the tenancy. Checking the silicon around sinks and baths and replacing when required will prevent leaks and major damage to kitchen tops and units. Mould and mildew build up can be nipped in the bud and sometimes tenants need guidance on how to ventilate, heat and clean a property to avoid this occurring in the first place. Frayed thresholds on carpets can be covered with wider cover strips but if left may require a new carpet. All these items can be spotted easily but are seldom reported by a tenant until the problem is beyond a simple repair. Roof tiles, fascias and guttering are not generally the concern of tenants but do need checking to plan repair, maintenance and cleaning. Garden walls and fences, overhanging and overgrown trees, dangerous paving and other trip hazards need to be checked as these remain the responsibility of the Landlord. The tenancy agreement may well state that pets are not allowed but If the tenant knows that you don’t inspect your property this may be ignored. Sub letting of properties and rooms not only breaches the tenancy agreement but also puts the Landlord on the wrong side of the law under the government’s new Right to Rent checks. Putting a positive on all of this – regular checks are a good thing. It gives tenants the opportunity to point out minor repairs that may be niggling them, and Landlords can rest assured that the tenants are looking after the property, staying longer with the understanding that you want to maintain your property well and protect your investment. The cost of full management service including property inspections carried out by a competent agent could help reduce the cost of repairs and maintenance and possible legal action. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. Taxing Times My wife and I want to make sure our joint tax affairs are as efficient as possible. What are the basic planning areas we should be considering? The first area to consider is whether you are both utilising your personal allowance and then find which tax bands you are both in. Where one spouse has a high income, and the other does not, then you could be wasting your tax free allowance. The allowance for 2019/20 is £12,500. Once the allowance has been used, the next £37,500 of income is subject to basic rates of tax and income over that level is subject to higher rates. Wherever possible, where one spouse is in one of the higher tax brackets and the other spouse a lower bracket, consideration should be given to shifting income to the lower earning spouse. This is not possible with employment income, but a self-employed individual should seriously consider including their spouse in the business. With regards to investment income, such as interest, dividends or buy to let property income, then this could be gifted outright from the higher tax payer to the lower so that the income derived from the investments is taxed at a lower

rate. Where investment assets are held jointly, it is possible to make a declaration specifying the shares in which the spouses do in fact beneficially enjoy the income. The declaration must relate to both the income and the capital, and both income and capital must be shared in the same proportions.

consideration needs to be given

On the disposal of a capital asset, such as a second property, it may be beneficial to ensure the asset is owned jointly between you. Any capital gains are taxed at either 28% or 18% (20% and 10% for non-residential property gains) for the higher rate and basic rate tax payers respectively. Each spouse will get a capital gains tax free allowance of £12,000, and so it is important to utilise this allowance and minimise the tax rate on sale.

investments are tax free, and

Other more general tax planning includes pension and ISA investments, and, gift aid payments.

therefore, always makes sense for

Pensions – Broadly, most people may pay up to £40,000 into their personal pension each year. This is a very tax efficient way in which to save for retirement because you will get tax relief on the pension contribution. A basic rate tax payer will get relief of £8,000 on a £40,000 contribution and a higher rate tax payer will get £16,000 relief. Accordingly, a £40,000 pension investment actually costs £32,000 or £24,000 for a basic rate and higher rate payer respectively. However, while there is a temptation for the higher rate tax payer to undertake all pension investment to maximise the relief,

to when the pension is eventually drawn down. This is because all of the pension will be in one spouse’s name, and this could mean higher taxes are paid because the other spouse has no pension income at all. ISA – It is well known that ISA it makes sense for the annual £20,000 investment allowance to be fully utilised before considering other investment vehicles. Gift aid – Where gifts are made under gift aid then the receiving charity can claim the tax you have paid on the gift from HMRC. Where you are a higher rate tax payer then additional higher rate tax relief may be claimed by you on your personal tax return. It the higher earning spouse to make gift aid donations rather than the basic rate paying spouse. QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?

ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.

Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.

Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.

Casa Valentin In May 2019, an intrepid group of Dads from Elvetham Heath travelled to Cataloi in Romania to renovate and replenish a children’s playground at Casa Valentin. Casa Valentin is a staffed home in Romania, which, for 17 years now, has provided holidays for sick or underprivileged children from all over Romania. It was built and is funded by The Sunflower Fellowship Romania - a Christian charity that was set up especially for this purpose. It also provides a social programme providing local poorer school children with a good meal and help with homework, all in a loving, Christian environment. The house is named after Valentin - a lovely little Romanian boy, sponsored by the Sunflower Fellowship’s founders, who sadly died from AIDSrelated diseases.

They worked extremely hard and, with lots of fun along the way, they completed all that they had set out to do – repairing the floor of the gazebo/ outdoor classroom, and repairing and building much-needed new playground equipment. Church on the Heath supports Casa Valentin through donations, trips such as this, and sending out filled Christmas shoeboxes for the children. If you would like to support the work of The Sunflower Fellowship at Casa Valentin, visit www.sunflowerfellowship.org or select them as your charity to support through purchases using Amazon Smile.

Supported by the Church on the Heath and many friends and family (many of you came to The Desperado Band fundraising concert in March), the Dads raised all of the money needed to travel to Romania and provide the materials for the work.

Kabir Ray, a leading archaeologist in the continued search for answers about the Bronze Age Indus peoples, recently went missing in a remote area. Uncovering The Merchant’s Secret by Elisabeth Hobbes is an historical romance set in Brittany. John Sutton is aboard a ship when it runs aground and is wrecked. Injured and washed-up on shore, he is rescued by villagers, but he finds that he can’t remember his name or where he lives.

Neander by Harald Johnson is a timetravel adventure. Tom Cook is working on an archaeological dig in Gibraltar, when his pregnant fiancée goes missing. When Tom goes searching for her, he slips through a time portal that takes him back... way back, to 40,000 years ago.

Twenty by Debra Landwehr Engle is a contemporary story about a middle-aged woman who wants to give up on life. Broken by the loss of close family members, loneliness and an unbearable Iowa heatwave, Meg takes some pills and will then have just twenty days before she dies.

Number Eight Crispy Chicken by Sarah Neofield is a political satire. The immigration minister has been detained! Love is in the Air! Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing Happy February everyone! This month is very much focussed on romantic love, of course, but the most important person to love is yourself. I have found that as I get older, I am much more accepting of myself and have grown to accept the voluptuous curves that I have! Normally during the year the curves do become less voluptuous at times but I do now accept that I will never be a thin fairy!! However, it is very hard to look in the mirror every day and not be critical of what you see. The key is to never give up making yourself feel good and that differs for everyone. Just being out in the fresh air always does it for me. I have been working out with a personal trainer for years, who is now a close friend of mine. We have always worked out for an hour once a week outside in the woods somewhere, running, walking, boxing with my pink reebok boxing gloves!, hanging off trees using a TRX band in the sun, wind and rain and I have always felt amazing afterwards. Having a personal trainer may seem very self-indulgent, but it is a lot cheaper than a health club membership that’s not used, and you can’t get out of it if your trainer is knocking on the door! It really works! Simply going out for a walk, preferably in a green area with

grass and trees is great for stress relief and very balancing. In holistic terms, green corresponds to the heart chakra, so if you are feeling very emotional, a walk in a wood surrounded by the energy of the trees and the colour green will always help.

in temporary and permanent

So when you are looking in the mirror every morning, what do you see? A beautiful face that is starting to sag a bit; it’s not as tight as it used to be, fine lines at the crease of your eyes, and sides of the mouth, uneven pigmentation, and those pesky hairs on your lip and chin that are getting darker and stronger?!

to changes in hormone levels

Don’t panic! If you have never been into a beauty salon before, they are not really scary places, and they can help with all of these problems. The most important advice I have, is do your research first, as all salons do different treatments and use different products, so read their reviews.

that can really work over time, so

I specialise in hair removal and I am very knowledgeable

techniques such as waxing, electrolysis and IPL (Intense Pulse Light). These are all perfectly safe treatments and can make a huge difference when you are battling with stubborn unwanted hair growth. Unfortunately, due in menopause, hair growth on the face is very common, as we slowly develop a male pattern of hair growth as we get older and many find it very embarrassing to discuss. Tweezing hairs is the usual removal method but this can stimulate more growth. Electrolysis and IPL are permanent techniques if you are interested, please ask for more information. In the meantime, don’t forget body moisturiser for dry legs, lip balms for dry lips in the cold weather, and a good protective moisturiser for your face. Have a good month!

The days are starting to get longer and spring is slowly creeping in. It’s a great time of year to start looking at what changes you want to make for the year ahead.

They don’t have to be huge life changing decisions and actions and it’s often surprising what a difference achieving the smaller goals can be. Mini goals like clearing out your wardrobe can be very satisfying and achieved in less than a day. If you have got a big goal on your mind though, my recommendation is that you put it out there without a specific deadline to it. For example, it could be completely renovating your house and garden. Put a flexible deadline in place and know that you can bring it forward or push it further out. Long term goals need a more fluid deadline to allow for the unexpected and ensure you don’t push yourself too far too soon. I suggest this because the huge goals can seem overwhelming and that can paralyse you into doing nothing. Start to break it down into chunks and smaller projects and at this stage I would recommend putting more fixed deadlines in place. Keep breaking it down into mini projects until it feels more comfortable and achievable. Don’t make it too easy though or you won’t do it! Write it down and put dates against actions. I’m working on a huge goal at the moment that I want to happen in the next 12 months, but realistically I know it’s going to be nearer the 3-year mark. At the beginning, it was so huge I felt too small to

Revitalise Your Life By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching

Welcome to February’s column helping you to revitalise your life! be able to do anything about it. I felt quite depressed at the thought because I’m very passionate about what I want to do, so I did some research and sought out a coach who I knew would be able to support me on my journey. She has helped me to focus on the present whilst maintaining my vision of my future. We’ve been working together for 6 months and I can honestly say it is the best investment I have ever made! And I don’t feel quite so overwhelmed by it all. The work I’m doing now is not directly related to the end goal, but I know it takes me one step closer and I know it’s helping me to build the necessary skills, experience and networks that I will need. It takes patience, passion and commitment that’s for sure! To help keep me motivated and focused on what I want to bring to fruition, I’ve sketched out a picture of what it will look like and pinned it to the wall. And that picture makes me laugh as I can’t draw for toffee! Having a sense of humour and not taking life seriously is a key element to big goals. It’s important to keep your energetic vibration high and remember to enjoy the journey too!

Especially when you’re working on changing things that really tug on your heart strings. So, ask yourself if what you’re doing now helps you get a little closer to your goal and ambitions? Are you enjoying it and if not, how can you adjust it to make it more fun? Keep your eyes on the prize (or a very special, but rubbish drawing!) and ask for help and support when you need it. Wishing you every success with your goals and dreams, no matter how big or small. Take care,
