Hello... ...and welcome to our October issue!

With cooler days and the nights drawing in I am starting to feel the need for some hygge in my life. If you are not familiar with the Danish concept pronounced HUE-GUH: it cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. Not sure if it’s my age but celebrating simple moments like making a cup of tea

and enjoying a homemade cake or biscuit with it, lighting candles, snuggling under a cosy blanket or sharing a meal with friends and family certainly adds to my happiness in life. In that spirit we have gathered local trades people for our annual Home Improvement Special and I hope you feel inspired to ‘hyggefy’ your home. Have a great month!

Peter Hudson, a 65-year-old father-of-three and grandfather-of-three who, since retiring, spends three days a week volunteering as a driver for charity Communicare. Hi Peter, please start by telling us about your life leading up to retirement? After leaving school, I took up an apprenticeship with British Aircraft Corporation, now BAE, as a technician apprentice. On completion of my apprenticeship I became a test engineer, working on aircraft such as Jaguar, Tornado and Concorde. After a few years, I left to become a test engineer with Dzus Fasteners before going into technical sales with them. After many years with Dzus, I moved into the specification of low and level access shower systems with another company working with local authorities, housing associations and contractors. I worked on this until my retirement. Why did you decide to start volunteering for Communicare? After retirement, I was looking for something to occupy me rather than just sitting around at home getting under my wife’s feet! Whilst researching, I came across Communicare, who appeared to offer something for me while providing a vital service for the community. Please tell us a a bit more about Communicare and the service they offer? In a nutshell, Communicare provide transport for their clients to appointments at the hospital, doctors and dentists within the local area. Appointments further afield such as to Basingstoke, Guildford or even London are also possible. Volunteers with Communicare give up their time either as drivers or duty officers - the latter tend to volunteer one day a month whilst the drivers work as and when necessary based on their availability. It is extremely flexible. There are set suggested

6 | ehd October 2019

payments for the clients but they pay either what they can afford or what they feel the service was worth. The drivers take the payments in sealed envelopes, which are then passed to the Communicare treasurer. What a fantastic idea! How did Communicare first come about? It originated back in 1975 over Elizabeth Waller’s kitchen table when a friend asked her if she could take her mother to an appointment. Discussions then led to the realisation that there were many people in a similar situation - within full time employment - needing to get relatives to important medical appointments. Following further discussions and some initial funding from the local Fleet churches, Communicare was born a year later. Originally both driving and home visits were part of the service, but over the years Communicare has evolved to just the driving. To begin with the service was handling four to five calls per day, but now Communicare handle 25 to 30 calls per day. It comes under the umbrella of the Good Neighbour Scheme and many of the original volunteers are still with the charity over 40 years later! Talk us through an average day for you? Me personally, I am available for transport three days a week, Monday to Wednesday. I will receive a call from the duty officer for where and when but it is up to me whether I can provide the transport based on my personal commitments. If I am available, I am given the clients details, collection time, appointment time and where to go. I will contact the client the day before to confirm the appointment and to introduce myself. On the day, I collect the client

from their home before taking them to their appointment and then waiting to bring them home again. How do you keep yourself occupied whilst waiting to take clients home? You will generally find me reading my Kindle in waiting rooms, though at Frimley Park Hospital I will wait in the café with a coffee. I am an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy Terry Pratchett is one of my favourites. Why is it such a valued service here in Fleet? The service is highly valued by the clients for the simplicity and convenience of a door-to-door service, with the cost being far less than alternative methods. If people can offer their time then Communicare will always welcome new volunteers as either drivers or duty officers. Not every one is aware of Communicare and what they offer; either as a client or as a volunteer, but the local surgeries know about them and will pass on the details. I have been involved for just under a year now and have really enjoyed it since day one. All the clients are different and I have always liked driving so for me it is a win win situation! What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? I have lived in Fleet for nearly 35 years now and have always been happy living close to the amenities as well as all of the nature around. What would you do to improve or change Fleet? It would be nice if the town centre could be pedestrianised and there was a better selection of shops. Interview by Emily Gregory of Baby Love Photography, www.baby-love-photography.com

Get stoned this Autumn! Feels like heaven - works like magic!! Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing I’m lying here, writing this column, on my sunbed on August bank holiday Monday in 30 degrees, trying to hold onto this all-consuming heat, as it is probably the last time I will feel this warm in the sun in this country until next Summer! Now it is October and Autumn is upon us. It is one of my favourite months to go on long walks and enjoy gorgeous colours that autumn brings. Autumn/ Winter is not the best time of year for me as I miss the sunshine, however, I do look forward to the warmth of my open fire in the evenings. The focus on treatments does tend to change in the winter months to more relaxing and nurturing treatments. As I have a heated blanket and a duvet on the couch, no one is ever cold, however, treatments like massage with hot stones are amazing to give deep warmth and relaxation to muscles. They say a stroke on a muscle with a hot stone is the equivalent of 10 with your hand. Hot stone massage treatments give muscle manipulation and thermotherapy which gives a much deeper treatment. Unlike all the spa photographs you see, hot stones are used to massage with, not just placed on the body! It is an amazing feeling and induces deep relaxation. Stones can also be used for remedial work as I have frozen marble stones too. If you are suffering from a pulled or strained muscle, a 30 minute session

using hot and cold stones can work wonders! Another deliciously warming treatment I offer is my Pure Heaven Candle Massage. These are gorgeous aromatherapy candles, developed for the Spa in The Four Seasons in Dogmersfield, made from local beeswax, soya and coconut oils. As the candle melts, the warm oil is poured onto the skin for a luxurious massage. These oils are particularly good for dry skin; perfect for the winter months. This treatment is 45mins and includes the rest of the candle to take home. My ‘Pure Heaven’ treatments are my Signature treatments, designed by myself. They all focus on deep relaxation for mind and body, using my own aromatherapy blends, and a combination of massage and reiki, to give you the perfect relaxation experience. The ‘Pure Heaven – The Original’ was created about 25 years ago, when I had my first salon in

a health club, as an idea for a Christmas Gift voucher. It was a huge success then and continues to be one of my most popular treatments. It includes a back massage, a facial cleanse and massage, and an oriental head massage – all the best bits! A lovely comment from a client about this treatment – ‘Feels like heavenworks like magic!’. Gift Vouchers for treatments do make lovely gifts as a treat for someone who needs some time for themselves. Just an hour on a warm treatment couch can make all the difference! Give me a call if you want to treat someone special. Enjoy your chilled month!

Address your gut health and improve your mental and physical well-being Do you: Have stiff, painful joints; Want more energy; Feel anxious or depressed; Feel overweight? If so, what you are about to read could change your life. It did mine.

strange but true that humans have just shy of 21,000 genes, whereas a humble fruit fly has 31,000 and a rice plant 42,000. So how do we run our complex human body on such a small number of genes? Well it is because our microbiome runs us, with 4.4 million genes between them.

The microbes which live in our gut and on our skin are called our microbiome, a natural ecosystem cultivated by you, at least 100 trillion of them. These microbes are responsible for our mental and physical health because they communicate with our digestive, nervous, blood and immune systems, via our gut lining interface. It is

The big problem is that the toxins we are now exposed to have damaged these delicate micro-organisms and their job, which is to keep us healthy, has become compromised. As a result, we are now experiencing an exponential increase in 21st century digestive, neurological, vascular and immune disorders such as; anxiety, depression, joint

pain, chronic fatigue, obesity, IBS, diabetes, autoimmune, allergies, skin problems and Parkinson’s. These conditions, now being called NCDs (Non-Contagious Diseases), are all on the rise and their increase is being linked to the damage we have done to our microbiome. If you are suffering from any of these NCDs, your microbiome may have become impaired. The solution lies in rebalancing the health of your gut and it’s not as hard as you may think. If you would like to discover a new path to improved mental and physical well-being, then please contact me for a free gut health consultation. andrea@andreabremner.co.uk www.andreabremener.co.uk 07721 881021

All Souls Remembering As we journey through life, we all have times when we lose people we love, people who are important in our lives. Whether it’s an early-life tragedy, a mid-life illness or accident, or the end of a life well lived, loved ones who die leave a space in our hearts and in our lives. We are bereft. Sometimes our grief can be overwhelming. We don’t want to forget them, yet we know we have to move on. We need to create space in our life that remembers but moulds the memory into who we are now. This takes time, sometimes years. There is a lovely tradition of taking time at All Souls (the beginning of November) to remember those who have passed away and to acknowledge and say thank you for all that they meant to us.

At the Church on the Heath, we will be holding a short service on Sunday 3rd November at 4pm to do just that. There will be music, poetry, scripture and a time for individual remembering by lighting a candle or writing a name in our book. We’ll follow this with time to chat over tea and cake. You will be very welcome to join us.

THE SALES MARKET

through the eyes of a Lettings Agent

01

252 622052

Most sales agents offer a Lettings Service and in recent times this has been the savior of many agents. Estate agents have struggled over the last few years with the market stalling and house sales slowing. The Countrywide Group, the largest estate agency group in the UK, which includes Hamptons, Gascoigne Pees, Mann and Carson & Co have seen their share price fall significantly from a high of £6 to less than 5p per share 9-9-2019. The traditional estate agents project that position in the market with prominent high street offices. These outlets come with high overheads but fine plumage is not there to attract potential buyers – it’s there to attract the seller or Landlord. The one company who have gone from strength to strength is Rightmove. Potential buyers and tenants no longer window shop along the high street, they check the properties out on their phones and click a link if they wish to take it further. Rightmove, Zoopla and On-The Market costs have added to the woes of agents with each outlet and the combined cost of on-line marketing is now close to the rental value of the office. The online agent Purple Bricks, once seen as the possible future of estate agencies have also seen their share price fall by one third. For all the criticism of Letting Agents it’s worth thinking about our role compared to that of the sales agent. We market the property, carry out viewings and find a potential tenant/s, just like a sales agent finds a buyer. At this point, the sales agent passes this to a solicitor to do the rest of the job, unlike the letting agent who will start to get the finer details in place. This involves processing references, preparing the tenancy agreement for both the tenants and landlord, finalising the move in process as well as ensuring all compliant documentation and finances are in place. A great deal of work in fact for a fraction of the price an estate agent and a solicitor will charge to sell your property! Concentrating entirely on lettings, Honey Lettings have established a thriving business offering an award-winning premium service. Many landlords have switched to us and have found our service superior to our competitors. Coupled with our competitive fee structure we are now very much the go-to agent in the region. Although we cannot be found at the centre of the High Street our properties advertised online stand shoulder to shoulder with the biggest agents. With all our focus on the Lettings market and being a member of ARLA - Propertymark, we stay up to date with the latest legal requirements. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

Do you think of it as the

happiness or does it leave you feeling discontented? Creating a space that makes you feel relaxed and happy will have a positive impact on every aspect of your life. If you are frustrated by your home, whether it’s cluttered because you need more storage or the layout just doesn’t work for your family, it can cause stress and negativity. With many of us opting to stay put rather than move, it’s more important than ever that we love the homes we live in. When we become over familiar with our surroundings it’s hard to see how things can be changed. Sometimes we need more space and an extension, conservatory or loft conversion is the answer. But re-purposing the existing space can work too and getting advice from an expert who will look at our home with fresh eyes can give

HOME IMPROVEMENT

The most popular room to update is the kitchen. Often the favourite room in the house, the style of the kitchen can set the tone for the rest of the home. The bathroom is often taken for granted but it’s the place where we start and end the day and can become our sanctuary especially in busy families. It’s important not to overlook the outside space. It’s well documented that gardening is good for our health but just being in a lovely garden works wonders on our wellbeing too. Changing the feel of your home doesn’t have to break the bank. Smaller touches and changes in styling can make a big difference too. Consider these tips to make changes on a smaller budget: Re-think the lighting. Good lighting changes everything and can create an inviting space which encourages you to linger.

Re-dress windows. Windows are the eyes of our homes. They dictate the light which is cast in to a room and control our privacy. Update flooring. Flooring acts as a backdrop to your decorating and also has a practical impact on how well each room performs. Make a gallery wall. Personalise your walls with a collection of art, prints or photographs to bring your home to life. Change door handles. Often considered the ‘jewellery’ of your house, the handles on doors, drawers and cabinets can add style with minimal expense. Paint. Nothing transforms a place faster than paint. It can instantly freshen up a room, make it appear bigger or smaller and add character. With the help of your local home improvement experts inside this feature, you could turn your home into a place you don’t want to leave.

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?

ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.

Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.

Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.

Total Wellbeing

with Teresa and Daniela

Nutrition for better energy and health The road to wellness comprises of nutrition, positive thinking, exercise and sleep. We all have different motivations for considering wellness - whether it’s to improve general health, lose weight, increase energy, to improve appearance, longevity or because everyone else is doing it! Fortunately, when considering nutrition, a wide variety of healthy and interesting food choices are becoming more readily accessible. Great news! How can we achieve our nutrition goals? By managing and considering: What (we choose to eat), how much (portion sizes) and how often (timings of our meals) we eat and drink. How well we digest our food is also important. This dictates whether we are maximising the absorption of essential nutrients which we need to thrive. A well balanced diet A well balanced diet consists of: ♥ Proteins - fish, poultry, lean meat, pulses (beans, lentils, chickpeas), eggs, cheese, nuts, tofu, plain live yogurt ♥ Carbohydrates - vegetables, fresh fruit, legumes, pulses, whole grains ♥ Fats - fish, seeds, olive oil, nuts, dairy ♥ Vitamins and Minerals - whole grains, pulses, vegetables, fresh fruit, seeds, nuts, dairy ♥ Fibre (found in whole-grains,

A little butter, a few raw nuts, seeds, avocado. Avoid margarines and trans-fats ♥ Fruit: Eat 1-3 portions of seasonal fruit a day, including berries Drink: Water, tea (black, green, fruit and herbal infusions). Elvetham Heath Primary School News The new academic year has started positively and the new Year R children have all settled in very quickly. They all looked so smart in their new school uniforms ready for the exciting learning experiences ahead of them! The Year 6 children have been away for the week to the PGL activity centre near Swindon and they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. For some children it was the longest they had stayed away from their families, so they feel rightly proud of their increased independence. We were delighted to come back to school with an extended staff carpark, thanks to Morrisons who did all of the work, as well as installing a key coded gate from the back carpark for staff to also use. We are very grateful to Morrisons for helping us to increase the parking capacity on site, especially as we have nearly 100 staff working at the school. The staff are all working hard our curriculum and constantly review it to ensure it meets the needs of the children. We have so many cross-curricular opportunities for the children, and many visits and visitors enhance the children’s understanding of their learning.

If you would like to help in our school by listening to children read, or with arts and crafts, science, cookery, gardening, or anything else please do get in touch! You would be most welcome. Mrs Megan Robinson Headteacher

Last time we looked at the impact work and family life can have on parents. It’s really tough to get that balance and many people are starting to set up their own businesses in order to get the flexibility that just doesn’t seem available to them in the workplace. Making the decision to leave your ‘safe & secure’ job is a biggie. All those fears come bubbling up to the surface - how will I pay the bills, what if it doesn’t work, am I capable of building a successful business, when will I find the time to do it even? I must be mad! I am an intelligent, professional person with a solid career behind me… that I’ve worked hard for. What the hell am I doing?! We take life so seriously don’t we? 9/10 it stems from needing the money to live and be relatively happy and comfortable. I get that. I was worried about it. I kid you not, my genuine fear was that I would be homeless and living out of a shopping trolley lol! I started telling myself, nothing has to be forever. I can get a job if I need to. 3 1/2 years on I’ve built a business I’m really proud of and I’ve helped many people make improvements in their lives and set up on their own too. Yes, I work hard. Yes, sometimes I work long hours. Yes, sometimes I can’t do things I want to. I can’t say that part is ANY different from when I was in paid employment. What IS different is that I choose what, when and how. That means for me that I’m happy living a life I love and I get to live it my way. Over the last 6 months I’ve been thinking about how I wish I’d had a step by step programme to follow alongside other people on the

Revitalise Your Life

By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching

Welcome to October’s column helping you to revitalise your life! same journey when I started out. I wish I’d had someone who had been there and could show me the essentials, what to avoid and where to focus. It would have saved me a fortune! And I’m sure I’d have achieved more in a shorter space of time with half the level of stress. To belong to a small community travelling the same journey as me would have made the early days much less lonely and scary. Having someone championing me and my idea, believing in me and helping me avoid the pitfalls would have been so helpful. So that’s exactly what I’m doing! I’m committing to helping people create & launch their own businesses with the essential steps like how to get clients, how to set up websites and social media simply, how to write a business and marketing plan and building a successful growth mindset alongside that. It’s a place you can come to for support, encouragement and a go to place for all those concerns and unanswered questions. Why should you do this now? I spent 3 years (probably more if

I’m honest with myself!) thinking that I wasn’t happy and I needed to change my career. Once I’d decided what I was going to do and that I was going to set up my own business it took me another 2 years and a breakdown to do something about it. 5 years had gone by! Life goes on doesn’t it? You’re flat out with work, family, life. You promise yourself every week, I’m going to plan at the weekend, I’m going to get this going, I’m going to do this. Then Saturday comes and you’re shattered. Sunday comes and you’re hungover and shattered. Thoughts of Monday start creeping in and another weekend has gone by. If not now, when? You can do it. And I’ll help you – for FREE. Join my free 5 day challenge in October and I’ll show you the essential, practical steps and help you get started. Sign up via my Facebook page – www. facebook.com/revitalisecoaching This is only available in October so don’t miss out! Take care,

Fast track hip and knee replacements. Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital. Living with hip or knee pain can be a worrying time. If the pain starts to become inconvenient or is restricting everyday activities, it may be time to seek help. At the Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital our Orthopaedic Consultant, Miss Kate Gill, is now offering fast track hip and knee replacement surgery, which can get you back to your best quicker than you think. What is a fast track hip or knee replacement? Usually, when patients undergo a knee or hip replacement procedure, they can expect an average hospital stay of 4-5 days for recovery. Miss Gill’s fast track surgery means patients can go home the day after surgery and some patients can even leave on the same day. Patients are often on their feet by 5pm after being in theatre that morning, which provides massive patient benefits. How does a fast track hip or knee replacement work? Patients can leave hospital faster as recovery time is considerably shorter. This is because the anaesthetic is targeted and used alongside sedation instead of a general anaesthetic. This allows for quicker post operative mobilisation, reducing risk of blood clots, strokes, chest problems and heart attacks. The surgical technique and implants are the same, but prior to the operation patients consume a carbohydrate loaded drink supporting quicker return of bowel function, ensuring patients lose less muscle mass and aids faster recovery.

What are the benefits? You may be able to recover in your own home and clothes the day of/after your surgery. As a general anaesthetic is not used, you won’t be left feeling sick or nauseous. Fast track replacements have been proven to reduce length of stay and morbidity. Miss Gill has found no increase in readmission rates or compromise to patient safety for these procedures. Why should I come to the Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital for my Orthopaedic care? We have no waiting lists at our hospital meaning you can have an initial consultation with our Orthopaedic surgeons in just 24-48 hours and receive any necessary treatment shortly after. Our experienced consultants are renowned for their consistently successful surgical outcomes. We are not-for-profit and reinvest back into developing our services and improving the quality of patient healthcare.

While the weather in August seemed about as predictable as our politics at the moment, I really enjoyed being able to spend so much time in North East Hampshire, speaking to local people about the things that are important to them. I also got the chance to meet some of the next generation of voters at Yateley School and Calthorpe Park School as they received their GCSE results. It was terrific to see so many young people across North East Hampshire achieving such excellent results. Across Hampshire, 69 per cent of pupils achieved grade 4 in English and mathematics – up from 67 per cent last year – and the ‘attainment 8’ standard also improved on last year. It is a real testimony to the dedication of our hard-working teachers, parents, and pupils. I am pleased that more money is going into our schools than ever

before but, despite this, there are areas of the country which have been getting comparatively more funding for their schools. That’s why the Prime Minister has pledged to “level up” every school’s funding to a minimum of £4,000 per pupil in primary schools and £5,000 in secondary schools. The House of Commons Library has analysed school funding data to see which schools will benefit. And not a single school will see its funding cut to

pay for improvements elsewhere, which has been the stumbling block in the past. Elvetham Heath ATE U PD UR Primary, for M YO F RO example, could MP see an extra £107,000 a year – and increase of 4.4 per cent. I think we can go further than simply increasing funding for schools, though. I know Boris wants to rethink how technical and vocational education works, but I’d like to know what you think. How could we get the best results for our children in North East Hampshire and beyond? Send me an email to: email@ ranil.uk or come along to one of my regular Tell Ranil events. Details, as ever, on my website!
