ehd meets... April Timpson, owner of Dance Focus Academy who is about to open a brand new dance studio on Albert Street. Please tell us a bit about who you are and what you do? My name is April and I moved from Hillingdon in London to Fleet with my husband and two children about 20 years ago. How long have you been a) dancing and b) teaching? I don’t know how old I was when I started dancing, but my first solo was when I was three and I’ve been dancing ever since. I’ve been teaching as an ISTD teacher for 20 years. How did you first get into it? I have always danced – even when we had no money to pay for my lessons I would dance in my bedroom. I auditioned for college and was offered places at four major performing arts colleges. However, in those days you had to pay – there were no student loan agreements for performing arts – so I had no way of funding it, meaning I had to get a job instead. I was working as a production planner for a major pharmaceutical company before going into selling advertising in business directories. This took me into selling computers and working with big corporations in the city until I stopped to have my daughter. I then went into interpersonal skills training and ended up running my own company. After signing my daughter up for ballet classes, it hit me how much I missed dance. I started attending jazz and tap classes and then realised that it was possible for me to retrain and follow my passion. So I enrolled at the Centre for Performing Arts in Greenwich to gain my ISTD teaching qualifications. I continued running
6 | ehd July 2019
my own company during this time which allowed me the flexibility to attend classes and re-train whilst still earning a living. It also meant that I could start the dance school from scratch without the worry of paying the bills in the early years. I suppose dance and music is in my DNA – I just had to do everything the hard way! Fondest memories of dancing? For years now I have performed with Cody Musical Theatre Company based in Fleet. I love working with them as they are such a creative and friendly group of people. One of my funniest memories however is being sideswiped on stage and having red lipstick smeared across my face in the middle of a dance routine. There was also a costume malfunction whilst tap dancing on top of a massive coin. Why do you love dancing and all that comes with it? Dance has so many benefits. It’s not just the stimulation of the mind and the body – it’s also the social awareness and development, making new friends and working with new people. We use Maths, English, French, Physics, Biology and our imaginations in most of our classes. It’s never just dance and the learning is a two way street – I learn from my students every day. Exciting news: I hear you’re opening a new studio this year. Please tell us more… Yes, DFA Studios is now almost ready to open. It has been a long process but I will be so excited when it completes. There will be two dance spaces at the studio providing a safe environment for dance
development and other movement activities. The studio will be the home of Dance Focus Academy but there will also be time and space available for new classes for adults and toddlers as well as expanding the DFA portfolio. Having a dedicate studio will provide the time and space to provide extra classes when needed and a rehearsal space for the students when they need to put in that extra practise. Strength and flexibility training in all its aspects is important so where there is free time available we are hoping to bring in complimentary programmes that can benefit everyone, not just dancers. Dance is for everyone – you don’t have to be the best, you just have to enjoy dancing and being the best you can be. Why should the people of Fleet take up dancing in 2019? Dance is so beneficial for our mental health and well-being and there is a growing awareness that the combination of dance and music has huge benefits, not just for teenagers and children but for adults too. There is increasing evidence that dance can help ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s and help maintain and stimulate our cognitive function. We all need to stay fit and healthy and dancing, in all it’s forms, does that for you on every level. Dance is one way to keep fit, but it can also put a smile on your face for hours. What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? The sense of community. Interview by Emily Gregory of Baby Love Photography, www.baby-love-photography.com

Brazilian or Hollywood Bikini Wax?
Is everyone really doing it? Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing When I qualified 27 years ago, Brazilian and Hollywood waxing was almost unheard of. It was the dancers on the cruise ship who initially taught me how to do a totally hairless bikini line, and at that time we were only using sticky wax and a wax strip! Ouch!! I am sure that as you are reading this and crossing your legs, you know someone who has had a bad experience trying to tidy up this delicate area, whether self -inflicted or by a professional beauty therapist. And it is something that needs to be done if you are planning to be in your swimwear! I have

It hurts like hell!! ALWAYS ask the salon if they use ‘hot wax’ or ‘non strip wax’ for this service, and you should have a more

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley
Tenant Fee Ban - 1st June 2019
01
252 622052
Whilst Brexit has hogged the headlines the ban on tenant fees has progressed through parliament and will soon become law. Any fee which would currently be due from a tenant will no longer be lawful. The tenant can no longer be charged for the cost of referencing including credit checks, the initial tenancy agreement or renewals and check in and check out reports. They will also not be chargeable for the time taken to attend the property regardless of the reason. Before the ban, tenant fees have usually based on the number of tenants looking to rent the property. If the tenant required a guarantor this would also incur an extra charge. Following the ban all of these charges will not be allowed. Inevitably larger families or sharers may be less appealing to Landlords and agents as the cost of the checks will need to be born by them. The deposit, which must be placed in a secure scheme, will be limited to the equivalent of 5 weeks rent. Larger deposits to potentially cover damage by pets will not be allowed. Many Landlords look on their properties as investments and, as with all investment, would like to get the best returns possible. Although the monthly rental income is one factor, higher administration costs will impact on this income. Invariably Landlords, in order to maintain the yield, will try and raise the income resulting in higher rental values. Protecting the property by finding good tenants and carrying out regular checks should also reduce the outgoings for the property. From June 2020 the rules will apply to pre existing tenancies. For Landlords with existing tenants you will need to review and possibly renew your agreement. Failing to comply with the new laws could result in substantial fines which, after the ban, will be imposed by the local authority who will get to keep the revenue! As a Landlord you may be reading this with trepidation but 95% of tenants simply want to find a nice property that they look after well. As a Landlord you will still have the ultimate choice in agreeing to rent your property. With guidance and checks you will hopefully find a great tenant. As a member of the Association of Residential Lettings Agents, ARLA - Propertymark, Honey Lettings keep up to date with the latest legislation enabling us to offer advice and support to our Landlords and guide you through the changes required. Rest assured Honey Lettings will be keeping a careful watch and we will make changes to accommodate and comply with the new laws whilst maintaining our award winning business.

How to lose weight well?
Losing weight seems to be such a never ending battle and apparently two thirds of us Brits are on a diet at any one time. Losing weight in the beginning for some seems to be very easy but then maintaining that weight loss is the impossible task. For others even losing 1lb seems nigh on impossible and your weight is just stuck and won’t budge no matter what you do. The good news is that losing and

loss goals for the month. Rule of thumb is you don’t want to lose more than 1-2 lbs a week. Go for 4lb weight loss goal a month and celebrate that when you achieve and if you don’t review your action plan and amend it if you think anything can change. Set yourself an action for healthy eating, exercise and sleep. Don’t overdo your actions, small steps are far better than no steps at all. Actions that I see work well are things like: have a meal plan for the week, prep some healthy snacks that sit in the fridge ready to grab and go, remove unhealthy snacks from the house, go to bed 15 minutes earlier than usual, walk the kids to school, find an exercise buddy, invest in a fitness tracker and increase your steps by 100 a day. What change can you make today that will move you one step closer to a healthier and happier you? Thanks for reading,

Elvetham Heath Primary School News
A Year of Sport at EHPS Coming towards the end of another academic year enables us to reflect on the sporting brilliance we regularly achieve and this year has been no exception. September saw the boys five a side team lift the Salesian trophy for the second time in three years. Our 7 a side team also won the NE Hants qualifying competition to get to the County Finals. October saw the boys travel down to Eastleigh for the County Finals and after a gruelling competition in extreme heat, we finished second in Hampshire, a remarkable achievement. The girls football team began their campaign with a big win over St Nick’s, whilst in both the hockey and cross country leagues, we made great starts. November saw us take part in a new sporting Festival, Tchoukball, which was hugely enjoyable and a sport we intend to play a lot more in school. December was when the boys football team defeated local rivals Crookham to take us top of the league, a position we never surrendered. January was Futsal, another newish sport, but one we quickly mastered becoming NE Hants champions. February means indoor athletics, with our goal to become area champions for the ninth time in

ten years. After many months of training on cold winter mornings, our goal became reality after some breath-taking performances from the boys and girls. Next stop the County Finals. Also this month we became basketball champions, a victory that qualified us for the Hampshire Games which take place in June. The second cross country race consolidated our position at the top of both the girls’ and boys’ leagues. March saw our athletes head down to Eastleigh for the County Finals and come home with a bronze medal, again a hugely impressive performance. Also this month, our hockey team became NE Hampshire champions and thus qualified for the Hampshire Games. Both our Yr5/6 and Yr3 Tag Rugby teams played in local tournaments but no trophies this time as some rugby at this level is classed as ‘non-competitive’. Our boys football team became league champions winning all of their matches, next goal for them the league and cup double. The girls football team held county champions Velmead to a highly respectable draw and in the same month both our cross country teams became league champions.
April came and with it both football teams booked their places in the Standing Cup Final after confidently plotting their way through some tricky rounds. More drama would follow! May and our next generation rugby stars (Yr3/4) did win a rugby trophy at an event hosted by Farnham Rugby Club. The final against Rowledge saw us run out 5-4 winners in a nail biting match. Also this month both football teams played their Cup Finals at the EBB Stadium in Aldershot. The boys were 4-1 winners against St Joseph’s whilst the girls undeservedly lost 1-0 to Velmead. Our netballers go from strength to strength recording a very impressive victory over Greenfields. June brings cricket and the prestigious Hampshire Games where we have teams competing in athletics, girls football, basketball and hockey. As well as all the sport that is done through our school teams, we also have a great many children who participate in sports outside of school, including swimming, gymnastics, dance, martial arts, horse riding and many more. What talented children!!

JOIN US. Heckfield is a living place: a Georgian family home lovingly restored to its classic origins and rewoven into a 400-acre North Hampshire landscape. Elegantly evolving, resolutely natural, we’re a beautiful piece of English history that redefines the idea of a hotel. Everything here begins with the soil. Our estate’s biodynamic Home Farm, walled gardens and orchards feed chef Skye Gyngell’s epicurean alchemy, bringing the outside joyfully into Marle and the open-flamed Hearth restaurants. Drawn from nature, Heckfield cultivates a space to unearth, reconnect and rediscover. We are searching for like-minded individuals to come and join us. We have opportunities in the following departments: • Food and Beverage, Kitchens, Reservations, Housekeeping, Spa and Gardens. Our ambition is to create a place which values people development, to allow them to discover more about organic and biodynamic farming, sustainability, great food and wines all within an environment of warmth, trust and integrity. hr@heckfieldplace.com

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?
ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.
Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.
Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.

Last time I discussed thoughts around Imposter syndrome and some strategies to overcome the symptoms. This month I’m talking about how our thoughts and words create our reality. You can be in control of your future by taking charge of your thoughts and your words. Effectively, creating a growth mindset. It takes practice but it’s incredibly empowering! How aware are you of your thoughts, words and conversations? Do they sound negative or defeatist? Do they come from a place of love or perhaps from a place of lack? What do you notice about what comes back to you? Being able to think and act positively when you feel like life is dealing you a poor hand is undoubtedly very tough. Being able to find the positive and focus on that, I think is the key to moving forward though. I’m unsure of where the saying originates, but it’s something I believe in –‘Energy flows where your intention goes’. If you’re worrying about not having something, it’s more than likely that’s what you’ll end up not having because that’s where your focus is. This week, I was invited to run a workshop for people from the local housing association who were finding it difficult to get work. I was asked if I could help them with confidence building, emotion management and interview preparation. As with any group of people, there were different stories about their reason for being there, different needs to be met and different perspectives and attitudes.
Revitalise Your Life
By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching
Welcome to July’s column helping you to revitalise your life! In common though, was that they all had challenging backgrounds. A couple of them in particular stood out for me, or rather, their different mindsets stood out. One was open and wanted to learn something new and implement different techniques to improve her life. The other was also keen and put in the same effort and commitment as the first lady. The key difference between the two of them was the word ‘but’. The first lady didn’t use it at all, she focused on how she could take learnings and apply them to her own life. The second lady started off in the same way, but always finished off her sentence with a ‘but’ e.g. but I’ve tried that before and it didn’t work, but someone else messes it up, but it’s difficult for me because… Both of these women were in very challenging situations, both with every reason to feel negative and pessimistic. Both engaged my empathy and compassion on a deep level. The key difference between them was that one wanted to take back control and the other couldn’t yet see that she could take back control so was waiting to be ‘rescued’ by someone else.
There was a lightbulb moment in the room though when we all agreed that ‘if you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got.’ What small changes can you make to your words and thoughts that could get you moving forward? How can you put a positive spin to them to shift your focus and mindset? Let me know how you get on and what you notice coming back to you with your new positive focus! Take care,
Jenny Ps. You can find me on FB, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn for daily support – get in touch, I’d love to hear from you!

A truly British August Bank Holiday and Kids Go Free! There is nothing like open air live music washed down with a jug of Pimm’s amongst friends and free fun-filled activities to keep the children amused, to allow for a truly British August Bank holiday weekend. Don’t be fooled by the title, you don’t need to be horsey in the slightest to enjoy the magical weekend, where kids go for free, at the Wellington Country Fair and Horse Trials. Set amongst the Estate land of the Duke of Wellington on the border of Hampshire and Berkshire it’s a great weekend to round off the Summer holidays. This exciting annual event is full of free family entertainment and activities. Country lifestyle shopping, artisan food, falconry displays, tractor rides, face painting and dog shows, pony rides and bouncy castles to name a few. It provides the perfect setting to soak up some vitamin D, catch up with friends, whilst the children burn off some much-needed energy. This year will be extra special with Lowde Music Trust working alongside the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford to provide a brilliant array of local talent with the provision of musicians and performers across the three-day event from the 24th – 26th of August 2019. The Lowde Music Trust is a charitable organisation (reg. charity number 1166852) that provides grants, donations, funding and support in line with two clear objectives. The first is to advance the education of young people in the subject of music and
creative performance. The second is help in the relief of sickness and the preservation of health among young people. “It is wonderful to be given the opportunity to collaborate with the Wellington Country Fair and Horse Trials. We are so grateful for their support to give these students and local performers a platform to showcase their talent to a great family audience.” Jenny, Chairman, Lowde Music Trust. Just like going to the horse races, you don’t need to have lots of knowledge to enjoy all the sporting action that the Wellington Country Fair and Horse Trials has to offer. So, what is this ‘Eventing’ lark all about? Well in simple terms, it’s the equine equivalent to a triathlon. Dressage is the horse’s ability to perform, where elegance and obedience is key. Showjumping is designed to show the agility of the horse and Cross Country is all about stamina. Previously this weekend has pulled in big industry professionals, last year the British Eventing team competed as part of their preparations, as well as Olympic and other experienced riders from around the world and even the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips has competed. If you have the energy, the Wellington Estate is also home to Wellington Country Park which
has a weekend packed full of kid’s entertainment. The Wellington Farm Shop is a treasure trove for foodies brimming full of local farm produce and Wellington Riding is perfect if you have caught the horsey bug! All within 5 minutes’ drive and ample parking from the Wellington Country Fair and Horse Trials. EHD has been lucky enough to be given a 2 for 1 code to nab yourself a bargain for adult tickets. Just pop EHD2019 online at the check out on their official website: www.wellingtonhorsetrials.co.uk Location: Heckfield, Hook, Hampshire, RG27 0LE. Rosie’s Good Reads Marked For Revenge by Jennifer S. Alderson is an art heist thriller. Zelda Richardson, a museum researcher, is anxious to make her mark, but little does she realise that she will soon be a suspect in a daring multiple art theft. Working with art detective Vincent de Graaf may be her only hope at salvation, as clues lead them on a pulse-pounding race across Europe. Head In The Ice by Richard James is a mystery set in the Victorian era. Just released from a Lunatic Asylum, Inspector George Bowman is in no shape to lead an investigation, but the discovery of a severed head in the frozen waters of the River Thames sees him back in service at Scotland Yard. A complex story full of compelling characters and plenty of atmosphere. The Silent Beauty by D.G. Driver is a short story fairy tale retelling. A beautiful woman, a game and a curse. If you’re a fan of fairy tales or retellings, D.G. Driver’s delightful, and occasionally dark series checks those boxes quite well, and can be easily read in one sitting.

Will Rise From Ashes by Jean M. Grant crosses women’s fiction and the post apocalyptic genres. A supervolcano erupts in Yellowstone, it leaves A J Sinclair separated from her youngest son and her brother. Thousands are dead or missing in a swath of destruction. She and her nineyear-old autistic son, Will, embark on a risky road trip from Maine to the epicenter to find her family. The Bledbrooke Works by John F. Leonard is a short horror story. Bledbrooke is a strange town, in which electricity often fails and phone reception is almost non-existent. Donald Hobdike is the Manager of Works; he must go down to the old, abandoned sewage works to fix a problem. A young ex-con, Mikey, is assigned to help him. And down they go... It’s darker than dark, sinister and highly readable.

Protecting our environment
With summer around the corner, many of us will be spending a lot more time outdoors, enjoying the beautiful countryside that we are so lucky to have here in
have a personal responsibility to act.
North East Hampshire. I really believe we live in a special part of our green and pleasant land, and that’s exactly how I want to keep it. I take conservation very seriously, which is why I founded the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Endangered Species when I was first elected in 2015. But, closer to home, one of the more obvious ways we can protect our environment is to recycle as much as possible. This is an area where local councils can step in to make things easier for people but we all
Glass is something which should never end up going to landfill, because it is so easy to recycle and there is a big market out there for recycled glass, so I was delighted when the council started offering large red bins for glass, for a small one-off fee, as an addition to the crates it provides for free. This is good news for everyone planning a barbecue, as it makes storing and getting rid of glass waste so much easier! Of course, despite what you might hear, the work never stops in Westminster either. Last month,
ATE U PD UR
M YO F RO HM Government MP announced that plastic straws, drinks stirrers, and plastic-stemmed cotton buds would be banned in England from April 2020. There’s a need for plastic in some situations, but so often there are perfectly good – and more environmentally friendly – alternatives.
But I’m eager to hear from you. What more do you think councils and governments can do? Are you prepared to pay more or change your lifestyle to do it? Email me to: email@ranil.uk or come to one of my regular ‘Tell Ranil’ events. Details, as ever, are available on my website.

Anyone for “Nature Bathing” along the Basingstoke Canal? No, we are not asking you to jump in the canal, but to relax and take in the nature that is around us, and particularly along the Canal. The Japanese call this type of relaxing Shinrin-yoku. Whether we call it Living Well, Well-Being or Preventative Healthcare, the concept of self-care is well publicised and incorporates interconnected dimensions of physical, mental, and social well-being. Many of us feel that a well-balanced diet, a good social life and an active gym membership should get us well on our way to Living Well, however this approach could mean we are overlooking something.
idea of Nature Bathing is to spend time in nature but a little more deliberately than usual. Since the 1980’s it has become cornerstone of Preventative Healthcare in both Japan and South Korea. Scientifically proven benefits include: Reduced Blood Pressure, Reduced Stress, Improved Mood, Increased ability to focus, accelerated recovery from surgery or injury, increased energy levels and improved sleep.
In the UK on average we spend 92% of our time indoors meaning we spend less than two hours a day outside. In the Winter months we spend significantly less time outside, an average of less than 30 minutes a day. Interestingly, a significant portion of the time we do spend outside is walking to and from the car or to the shops. Could our loss of connection with nature be the missing component in our approach to Well Being?
So how does one practice Nature Bathing locally? Where does the canal come into this? It’s important to understand that Nature Bathing is not a hike nor a fitness exercise. Distance travelled and time spent don’t really matter. The key is to leave your phone and problems behind you and engage four of the five senses: sight, smell, hearing and touch. Wander aimlessly, take a break and simply stand and observe. It is this combination of mindfulness and the natural environment that give Nature Bathing its restorative power.
Shinrin-yoku originated in Japan in the 1980’s translates to “Nature Bathing” or “Forest Bathing”. The
The Basingstoke Canal, effectively a 32-mile-long, 224-year-old ‘National Park’ and somewhat of a hidden gem running from West Byfleet, through Woking, Fleet and on to Odiham. Most of the Canal is designated SSSI (site of special scientific interest) because the Canal, together with the associated ‘flashes’ and heathlands is rich in nature and is nationally important for its aquatic plants and invertebrates. Its quiet tree lined tow paths provide the perfect habitat for ‘Nature Bathing’. The canal is co-owned and funded by the Surrey and Hampshire County Councils through the Basingstoke Canal Authority. The Basingstoke Canal Society, a charity, works alongside the council and through its volunteers, works to make improvements to and safeguard the canal. So, come and flex your Nature Bathing skills along the canal. In addition, the Society are always looking for new members, Friends and volunteers. Find us at
