ehd meets...

Gina Paskins and Julia Whiteman, owners of Sugarplum Boutique in Fleet, who’ve been friends for more than 22 years and business partners for nearly a decade! How did Sugarplum first begin? Julia started Sugarplum in April 2004 doing Partyplan in people’s houses, craft fairs and working on a retail merchandising unit in the Hart Centre on a Saturday. We’ve been friends for more than 22 years - our children are actually cousins - and we always liked the idea of working together so we decided to go into business in 2010 (full-time) with the vision of owning a shop. In 2010 we progressed to six days on the Retail merchandising unit in the Hart Centre. We also had a huge serviced office in North Camp. There were four of us in the Sugarplum family at this point and we had great fun travelling the length and breadth of the country selling products at top end shows such as Country Living, Spirit etc. During this time we were also looking for a suitable shop but we’re very fussy so it took a while! We found our current shop early in 2013 and after extensive refurbishment (we practically gutted the place as we wanted to take the building back to its roots) we proudly opened our doors in September 2013. We now employ 10 local ladies. Are your backgrounds in retail? Julia started Sugarplum and has a sales background. Gina comes from a corporate background which is great as we bring different skills to the business. We feel we have have a good eye for fashion, style, gifts and home décor. For anyone who doesn’t know, describe Sugarplum to us… We’re an independent lifestyle boutique. We source all our products personally from around the UK and Europe. We sell ladies’ clothing, handbags, jewellery, scarves, gifts,

8 | ehd December 2019

lighting, furniture, artwork and home décor. If you want a gift for yourself or a friend, it’s the perfect place to shop. What makes you different to other shops in Fleet and the surrounding areas? Our lovely Sugarplum team are just amazing. They are friendly, helpful and passionate about every customer enjoying their shopping experience. We also constantly update our products so there’s always something new to see and we offer a fabulous loyalty scheme as a ‘thank you’ to our loyal customers. How/where do you source new suppliers? We have hundreds of different suppliers and each season we find exciting new ones too. We travel around the country and across Europe going to trade shows - we are constantly looking for different and unusual products which are great value. Top five things we all need from Sugarplum for the coming winter? A multiway poncho (£35) which can be worn in eight different ways; a magnetic scarf brooch (£14); a glittery pair of slippers (£18); a set of stone Angel Wings (£76); and an ontrend leopard print tunic dress (£38). What’s the secret to running a successful business? Appreciating each other’s strengths, having fun and becoming friends with our lovely team and so many of our customers. As well as running the shop, how else do you like to spend your time? We have little time for anything else, especially at this time of year, but both of us love exercising and spending time with our family and friends.

What would you say to any wannabe shop owners thinking of launching in Fleet? Retail is tough at the moment and at times you draw on every reserve to keep going. You have to constantly innovate, have your store looking amazing at all times and always be one step ahead of the competition. You need the support of local people to flourish without their support our independent shops will not continue to thrive. What’s the one thing you love about living in Fleet? Living so close to where we work is brilliant and we love our little town. What would you do to improve or change Fleet? Free parking would help and a better selection of shops Is there anything you want to share with Fleet that perhaps we should know? We’re delighted that Costa Coffee has opened next door to us. It’s great for Fleet to have another filled shop and we personally love their hot chocolate with cream. Your favourite place to eat / drink / go in Fleet? La Casa is a firm favourite, especially for lunch. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Don’t take life too seriously and live for the moment. What is the most trouble you have ever been in? Trouble! Us Sugarplum ‘Angels’? As if! Interview by Emily Gregory of Baby Love Photography, www.baby-love-photography.com

LANDLORDS by Lorraine Hutley

PROPERTY INSPECTIONS

252 622052

In order to manage a property effectively you need to visit on a regular basis. At Honey Lettings we make the first visit after one month followed by visits every 3 months. We try and establish from the outset that visits are positive and allow the tenants to point out the issues and concerns they may have. Checks are not as detailed as check-in and check-out inventories but instead look at the general condition whilst making sure the tenant is looking after the property correctly. We believe that establishing checks at regular intervals encourages the tenant to keep to their obligations. What do we look for : Landlords/Agents maintain a legal responsibility for the property and this includes who is living there. If more than three unrelated people are living at the property this would constitute a HMO (Home of multiple occupancy) and as a result should be licensed. This may well be in breach of the tenancy agreement however the legal responsibility still falls on the Landlord. A more regular occurrence is for a partner to move in who is not on the tenancy. If it’s just for weekends this may be fine but when it becomes a more permanent arrangement they should be added to the tenancy agreement and the relevant Right To Rent checks carried out. Pets are another addition which won’t be spotted without checking. We see a variety of pets from goldfish, snakes, mice up to large dogs. Fish are often not seen by tenants as an issue but in small flats a large tank of water can add to damp and mould issues. Larger pets are likely to result in the need for additional cleaning and de-infestation at the end of a tenancy.

On walking into the property, if the tenants have been smoking it is immediately noticeable. Tenants may think that smoking out of window is a workaround but if your property smells of stale tobacco it may make it harder to re-let. Temperature and humidity are also noted. Cold properties may freeze and over warm properties tend to suffer from mould issues. Condensation on windows is a sure sign that the property needs airing and that damp and mould issues may follow.

Regular visits will highlight damage including marks on carpets and walls. Fair wear and tear need to be factored in but if the property has heavy wear and marks after six months steps need to be taken. The garden is another area that, if left to it’s own devises, may be difficult to sort out. The grass needs to be cut regularly in the growing season and the paving areas weeded. The tenant may not have the skills but they can arrange to pay to have this work completed on their behalf, to keep to their obligations within the tenancy agreement.

The most common issue is failing silicon around baths and showers and at the back of the kitchen sink. If caught in time this is not a major job but if not checked the first report from the tenant may be water through the ceiling. Based in the heart of Fleet, Honey Lettings specialises in lettings and property management. For friendly, knowledgeable advice on property letting call Honey Lettings. No houses to sell just homes to let.

Many people use digital assets in some form, but without considering how those assets would be accessed and managed after death. A digital asset is a possession which is accessed by a digital device such as a laptop, mobile phone or tablet. Examples include items which are stored online such as digital photographs, videos, music, emails, family ancestry information stored in databases and conversations on social media. It is also possible to use a digital portal to access non-digital assets, such as money in bank accounts, pensions and other investments which can be managed and controlled using online accounts. To work out what will happen to digital assets when you die, you need to look carefully at each asset/ account. The terms and conditions agreed to when an online account is created should confirm who would be able to access the account if the account holder dies. Digital assets can be accessed following an agreement to use a website’s services, in which case the asset is not owned by the individual using the services and cannot be passed on by their Will. However, a number of social media providers will allow a profile to be memorialised or permit the downloading of the content to be kept going forward. If no action is taken following the death of a user, some websites will automatically delete data and close accounts due to a period of inactivity. Currently, a couple of internet service providers will allow users to nominate a person

Digital Assets and Death to take control of their account following inactivity (for example Facebook allow users to nominate a legacy contact and Google allow users to nominate an Inactive Account Manager).

The following practical steps should be considered: 1. Make a list of digital assets, so that the executors of your estate are quickly able to identify and protect those assets where possible. 2. Keep a list of account usernames and login details. This should be done not only for digital assets and online accounts, but also for devices such as laptops, mobile phones and household devices controlled remotely. This list should be kept securely as a hard copy and regularly updated. Tell your executors where to find the list, but do not give anyone a copy. 3. Consider appointing a nominee to deal with accounts which are inactive for a period of time, where the provider offers this facility. 4. Prepare written instructions to the executors of your Will letting them know any particular wishes you have, e.g. if you want a specific message put on your social media page after your death and if you want certain persons to have access to a memorialised account. 5. Create hard copies of any data that you would not wish to be destroyed, particularly photographs and videos. Keep the hard copies in a place where your executors can find them. 6. Consider destroying any data that family and/or friends might

find distressing if they are able to access your data after your death. 7. Check the terms and conditions of any loyalty cards to see if points are deleted after death or can be passed to other beneficiaries. If benefits can be passed on, check that the persons named in your Will are the people you would want to receive those benefits. 8. If you have any intellectual property rights (for example copyright or trademarks) include a specific clause in your Will to gift the benefit of those rights on your death. 9. If you own cryptocurrency, securely keep a hard copy note of the public and private keys held in any digital wallets. If you need help or advice on any of the above issues, contact us for friendly, expert advice. At Neale Turk LLP our private client practice is led by partner Charlotte Searle, a solicitor and fully qualified member of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and the Association of Contentious Trust and Estates Practitioners (ACTAPS). The three thieves of your sight.

Initial consultation from

Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital. As we age, diminishing vision is one of the greatest threats to our quality of life. The three most common conditions causing sight loss are Cataracts, Glaucoma and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). These conditions all require different treatment paths. 1. Cataracts Cataract, a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, is the biggest cause of reversible blindness worldwide, affecting 133 million people. Early signs include blurry vision, glare from car headlights and difficulty reading. Blindness caused by cataracts is reversible with surgery. 2. Glaucoma Glaucoma often develops with no pain and no symptoms until it’s very advanced. Glaucoma often runs in families so it’s important to get regular eye health checks if you have a family history. Blindness caused by glaucoma is permanent but we can help to preserve your remaining vision.

3. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) AMD is the most common reason behind blind registration in the UK. In AMD there is death of light-sensitive receptors in the retina. Signs of AMD include distortion, blurred vision and being unable to focus on your central vision. In some cases we can treat AMD and may be able to improve your vision. How we can help you At Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital, we have an exceptional group of Ophthalmic Consultants on hand to help diagnose, treat and cure a range of eye related conditions, so you can be confident that you are in safe hands.

Last month we talked about the importance of self-care and how prioritising your needs and dreams is far from being selfish. As it’s Christmas, traditionally a time for giving and thinking of others, I thought we could look at gratitude and what it really means. It’s so much more than writing down a list of things, people, experiences that we’re thankful for. Although, that’s a great start. We live in an age (that we’ve created ourselves) that focuses on lack. We’re always striving for more; to achieve more and; have more. We’re conditioned to be striving for the next thing and for instant gratification. Rarely do we stop to take a breath and appreciate everything and we seem to have shifted to a focus of lack. As you know, I’m a huge advocate of the power of positive thought and working with universal energy and the law of attraction. Each of our thoughts creates a feeling and each feeling has a vibrational frequency to it. Those vibrational frequencies attract more of the same. Scientists have actually measured these in hertz frequencies! I won’t go further into it here, but if it’s of interest, you can find out more at https://www. heartmath.com/science/ When you focus on what you haven’t got, guess what? You attract more of the same, creating more lack. Yes, that makes my head hurt sometimes too! So, how do you change your focus from one of lack to one of abundance, even if you’re current reality is not as you’d like it to be.

Revitalise Your Life

By Jenny Thomas, TEDx Speaker, Confidence & Career Coach at Revitalise Coaching

Welcome to December’s column helping you to revitalise your life! This is where the power of gratitude comes into play. Start small if it helps, being grateful for a roof over your head; food in the cupboards; family; a crisp, sunny morning; a good night’s sleep. When we engage with the feeling of gratitude our thoughts change into more positive ones and as the way we feel starts to improve our energy shifts. Then we can start to attract more of the good stuff and we find it easier to dismiss the negative and lacking thoughts that come up. Remember when you wanted what you have now? It’s such an effective way to bring us into the here and now and recognise all the amazing people and experiences in our lives.

theme, I also wanted to share with you that I qualified as a Certified Angel Guide in September. Yes, I have a certificate and everything! Seriously though, it’s an energetic practice I have wholeheartedly embraced and have now brought into my coaching practice for those that find it helpful. A 1 hour session involves me guiding you through a short energetic connecting meditation which allows angelic messages to be received for you. We then move on to a 3-card reading which can be for general guidance or you can look at something specific. I then blend in my coaching skills to help give deep insight into your reading and empower you to move forward in a way that suits you.

Please don’t misunderstand me, I know it’s not easy and I get it wrong a lot! I catch my thoughts wandering into that pattern of lack. It takes practice and I find writing down 5 things daily that I feel grateful for or lucky to have is a great help. Maybe put a journal on your Christmas wish list!

I’m offering these sessions at £40 for an hour – if you would like to book one for yourself or for a loved one for a beautiful Christmas gift, please email me on jenny@ revitalisecoaching.co.uk.

Sparkle this Christmas from inside out!

Hello and welcome to my column about beauty, health and wellbeing

‘Tis the season for a spot of glitter! I actually love a bit of sparkle all the year round – my favourite flattie shoes are covered in shimmery diamonds. I love them! It’s Christmas party time so brighten up that LBD (little black dress) with a sparkly accessory or fabulous shoes. Top tip!! My favourite shoe website is www.shoeaholics.com – don’t get hooked! I buy most of my shoes from them – fab shoes at amazing prices! Start to think about booking your beauty/hair appointments early December. We do get booked up very quickly for all treatments including party nails. Treat yourself to a Shellac Gel polish for Christmas – it should last you for the whole holiday, including New Year! A great value manicure. Splash out on a full set of semipermanent lashes. They are fabulous for the party season and holidays. Find a therapist who does them regularly and you won’t be disappointed. I have mentioned fake tans here before. If it’s just your arms and legs that are being exposed, use an everyday tanning lotion for a gentle glow. So easy to use. Glitter has definitely been in fashion over the Summer too for the ultimate festival look and I am sure that will continue. A slash of sparkle across the cheekbone will always make you look more beautiful. Need some inspiration? Log onto Pinterest, there are lots of ideas on there. The place to buy glitter makeup is definitely Superdrug in Guildford! I spent a good half an hour in there in the Summer choosing my colours! Have fun with it!

30 | ehd December 2019

So what about feeling sparkly inside? The party season can be rough on our digestive systems with occasional over eating and drinking. The most important thing to remember is to stay hydrated, so drink lots of water. Recently, I started taking a course of live pro-biotics which is a drink that you take first thing every morning. It introduces good bacteria into the gut and helps it to perform digestion much more efficiently. This product is called Symprove and has been passionately researched and developed by Barry Smith who is based in The Sands, Farnham. www.symprove.com. It is helping many serious digestive problems, however, my interest is that a healthy gut promotes healthy skin. Also as a menopausal woman, with an aging digestive system, good digestion is key. There are definite links between menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and insomnia, and what you eat. If

you are suffering with digestive problems, please do have a look at the amazing reviews of this product. Lastly, my request for this Christmas is to support your local independent businesses like us. You are very important to us! You can find unique and personal gifts for your loved ones in the form of Gift Vouchers, costume jewellery, scarves, beautiful skincare and local handmade chocolate! I would like to thank you for reading my ramblings this year, and thank you so much to those of you who have visited me at the salon. Enjoy your sparkly festive season!
