Buenos Aires al ritmo de Aldo Sessa por el Curador Michael Nungesser Berlín, 2012

Las imágenes de Aldo Sessa, uno de los fotógrafos más ilustres de la Argentina, abarcan una gran gama de temas. El país donde nació, forma en parte el crucial mundo que él caza con su lente.

Lejos de cualquier tipo de nacionalismo, Argentina -que es un país inmenso- conforma el cuerpo que nutre su pasión por la vida y constituye la base para animar su fantasía. En suma, Argentina le ofrece todo para captar imágenes.

Como explorador fotográfico, Aldo Sessa ha viajado durante años por todo el territorio argentino, desde el aire, el agua y la tierra -para aludir el título de un libro suyo-, por todos los diferentes paisajes y zonas climáticas. Ha fotografiado su flora y fauna, sus hombres y sus mujeres, sus costumbres y sus edificaciones. Algunos temas típicos ha abordado con más énfasis, como el mundo de los gauchos o el del tango. Además, miles de personas han posado ante su cámara, coetáneos de toda índole, entre ellos los social y culturalmente más destacados del país.

Afincado en esta nación sudamericana, Aldo Sessa viajó también por el mundo, conoció el Uruguay y Brasil, los Estados Unidos e Israel, China, India y Thailandia, España, Francia, Gran Bretaña y -naturalemente- Italia, el país de donde venían sus antepasados. Con su cámara descubrió las grandes capitales como Viena, Londres, París y -sobre todo- Nueva York, la Gran Manzana, a la cual dedicó publicaciones fotográficas enteras.

Pero la otra gran metrópoli que le atrae, que le encanta y conmueve, es -sin duda- Buenos Aires.

Aqui vió la luz por primera vez, creció, maduró. Aqui vivió durante toda su vida, aqui vive todavía, en pleno Palermo, no muy lejos de su querido Rosedal del Parque Tres de Febrero.

Tiene su estudio en este barrio de raices porteña, en un callejón tranquilo -de otros tiemposrodeado de cámaras y fotografías antiguas, en su mayoría de origen argentino.

La historia de Buenos Aires está ligada a generaciones de inmigrantes, oriundos sobre todo del Viejo Continente. “Eso -me explica el fotógrafo en una carta- se nota en la fisonomía de la gente, en la arquitectura de diversos estilos, en los barrios, en las confiterías, en las letras de los tangos, confiriéndole el carácter de una ciudad europea, convirtiéndola en la más cosmopolita de Latinoamérica.”Aunque los tiempos gloriosos, la era del auge económico de principios del siglo pasado, se ha desvanecido, Buenos Aires sigue siendo una de las ciudades grandes y majestuosas del mundo. Recientemente la comparaban con Berlín -con la capital alemana está hermanada desde hace casi veinte años- en particular por su rica vida cultural.

Como otras grandes capitales del mundo, Buenos Aires tiene sus fotógrafos retratistas. “Buenos Aires es una ciudad compuesta por una cantidad de pequeñas cosas queribles que la transforman en un rostro muy particular, propio”, cuenta Aldo Sessa. Él es uno de los fotógrafos más fieles y sensibles de la ciudad a orillas del Río de la Plata, “que no es una ciudad que ofrezca un pintoresquismo inmediato”, como dijo Guillermo Whitelow – con excepción quizás del barrio de la Boca.

Aldo Sessa no es un documentalista de la ciudad ni fotógrafo de la calle específicamente, tampoco reportero aunque ha trabajado esporádicamente en este ámbito. Indudablemente, sus fotografías de Buenos Aires son documentos históricos y sociales. Son testigos del compromiso de Aldo Sessa con su ciudad “que siempre recorro para controlar y registrar el paso del tiempo y sus cambios” – palabras suyas del catálogo de su Muestra en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes en ocasión de los 150 años de existencia de la fotografía.

Su arte fotográfico no se mueve en el plano de los fenómenos, va mucho más allá. Sus fotos de Buenos Aires son documentos de su personalidad, y de su alma. No solo expresan visualmente su forma de ver y mirar, sino también su capacidad de captar el mundo, de sentir y digerirlo. Los edificios, caminos, plazas y rincones que vemos, incluso sus vecinos, no aparecen como meros registros de un complejo organismo urbano sino como elementos de una visión individual y sensible de un espacio vital e intensamente vivido. Aldo Sessa “revela -según las palabras de su amigo, el escritor estadounidense Ray Bradbury- nuestra realidad para imprimir la suya en la emulsión que hay detrás del ojo.”

Los diferentes lugares y protagonistas de sus fotos constituyen una parte de la vista sobre esta ciudad de los buenos aires disipados por el progreso, la otra parte indisoluble se encuentra en el enfoque y la composición, la elaboración en el proceso de revelar así como en la presentación, sea dentro de un libro o en un sitio expositivo como es un museo. Es el encuadre y la atmósfera que muchas veces revela la herencia artística de nuestro fotógrafo. Profesionalmente Aldo Sessa comenzó como pintor, dibujante y artista gráfico y audiovisual para sustituir pincel y lápiz por la máquina -como él llama a la cámara- y adentrarse en el proceso mágico de fijar luz y tiempo de una vez por todas.

Cada foto de Buenos Aires hecha por Aldo Sessa equivale a un momento específico, pero en el mismo instante, la ciudad se transforma en un escenario de la vida que encierra e implica elementos sensuales, emotivos, simbólicos y alegóricos. Cada foto cerca un mundo en sí y puede -como la exhibición de La Colección Fortabat lo demuestra- presentarse como un cuadro, de la misma trascendencia y del mismo peso.

Así la muestra de Aldo Sessa, en las salas de la Colección está configurada por una serie de paredes, cada cúal con un conjunto de fotos en blanco y negro seleccionadas y copiadas en formatos medianos y grandes, acompañadas de otras tomas en colores brillantes muy atractivas. Todas son piezas de un mosaico interminable que abarca un sinfín de significados

y niveles de comprensión. En las paredes, Buenos Aires, vista a través de un periodo que abarca más de medio siglo, aparece como una serie de diferentes escenarios.

En una de las paredes, la ciudad es el escenario de la infancia. El espacio edilicio y anónimo de los muros y calles se transforma milagrosamente en un lugar de juego y de gozo que se revela casi clandestinamente en la imagen del niño que luego de hacer un gol se revuelca de felicidad en la vereda. Cualquier potrero puede servir como cancha, y el fútbol -el pasatiempo preferido de los adolescentes- da pie a escenas fotográficas casi acrobáticas. En el centro de la pared aparece con enfásis, la cara simpática de un joven que nos mira con fijeza. Es el rostro casi arquetípico de un chico humilde que orgullosamente pasa su tiempo vendiendo globos.

En otra pared -también con vistas de los sesenta- muestra la ciudad como zona industrial.

Es un mundo de almacenes y chimeneas, también de mugre y de basura, donde aparecen los cirujas como paseantes infernales. Están las fotos de la pared todas en color: colores oxidados, tonos bronceados por el flujo del tiempo y matizes otoñales que marcan el lento adiós a la era de humo y fuego. En un primer fondo, unos flexibles hierros abandonados dibujan una composición rara e inquietante que domina la imagen, mientras el antiguo Club de Pescadores se divisa fantasmalmente en la bruma del horizonte.

El mundo del trabajo también define temáticamente otra selección. La ciudad ahora surge como lugar de tránsito con sus ríos y redes ferroviarias, con barcos y grúas, con grupos de marineros y pescadores. Las dimensiones gigantescas de las venas urbanas emergen en la gran imagen nocturna central de las vías del tren casi interminables. Se pierden en la lejanía donde el ojo atento puede divisar la figura pequeña de un ser humano, perdido y empotrado entre los grafismos de luz y riel. También es inmensa la superficie del río en otra imagen en la cúal el joven observador en el centro -visto por detrás como doble nuestro- aparece como silueta o sombra, desprovisto de cualquier vestigio corpóreo ante la fuerza vital del agua.

Por un lado se ve una escena callejera de antaño donde el bien vestido nonno descansa dignamente en la acera, rodeado de las nuevas generaciones, mientras por el otro lado, detrás de una malla que nos separa de ellos, se ve algunos hombres -inquietos no sólo por el enfoque borroso-, transeúntes de unos tiempos más anónimos.

Una pared más, dirige la vista a la ciudad como un gran panorama. En el formato panorámico se percibe la ciudad como un mundo en sí, como un planeta propio que investiga a otros desde un observatorio. Aparecen torres y rascacielos, fachadas y puentes, palacios y rascacielos, las grandes construcciones arquitectónicas como una estación de tren y los lugares de recreo como los parques y plazas arboladas.

Dos paredes están integradas por series de fotos que enfocan diferentes sitios urbanos casi siempre desde un ángulo poco común, a veces como un intenso juego de luz y sombra, otras

como un juego entre la imagen real y la imagen reflejada. En el eje de una de las paredes está la pareja que se baila abrazada, tomada desde arriba como partitura viva. No es cualquier baile. Se llama Tango, con mayúscula – “el cerrojo del amor”, así se llamó recientemente su inmensa foto-mural emplazada en la fachada del Edificio Del Plata a metros del obelisco.

Por sus lados se elevan los monumentos pétreos de la primera modernidad, una estación del tren y unos edificios altos residenciales, que convierten los seres humanos en hormigas.

En la otra selección el protagonista de la composición central se encuentra en el fondo de la escena callejera. Es un fotógrafo de la plaza, uno de los personajes porteños ya extinguidos -como en la mayor parte del mundo-, que sobrevive gracias a la fotografía. Lo que ayer era a la moda, un corte “moderno” de pelo por ejemplo, ya ha desaparecido. Todo es huidizo, como el reflejo de edificios y hamacas en un charco.

Siguen selecciones monotemáticas. Una está dedicada al pasto de la ciudad, al reino de la naturaleza. Pero en las dos composiciones grandes, donde los tapices de hojarasca parecen casi irreales, el reino no está vestido sólo de verde sino de otros colores intensos, gracias al Gingko Biloba y al Jacarandá. A sus lados, en formato vertical, perdido en la penumbra del denso ramaje, aparecen como guardianes un ser felino y una pareja de manos artísticas danzando.

Dos monumentos nacionales emblemáticos muy distintos son otros dos de los temas.

El Teatro Colón, que según palabras de Manuel Mujica Lainez “es uno de los lujos de nuestra ciudad”, durante años le sirvió a nuestro fotógrafo como campo de actividades intensas que proclaman su vida y gloria, citando el título del volumen publicado después. Ahora figura en algunas tomas extraordinarias de colores tenues casi monocromáticas que comprimen simbólicamente la atmósfera de este mundo dramático, saturado de historia.

El otro monumento histórico -construido más tardiamente-, que le atrae, es el Obelisco, erigido en pleno cruce de avenidas, memorando las cuatro centurias de la capital. Lo ha saludado en muchísismas de sus expediciones urbanas, durante el día y la noche, con frío o lluvia, viento o calor, de cerca o de lejos, rascando-cielos siempre distintos. Y cada vez está rodeado de actores y ambientes diferentes, sean diurnos o festivos. Acompaña también al ciudadano reflejado en un charco. Hombre y obelisco hermanados en un abrazo metereológico-metafórico. ¿Cómo se nos descubre la Reina del Plata en las fotos de Aldo Sessa? Es un mundo preferentemente a cielo abierto. Es el mundo de un observador noble y delicado, caminando infatigablemente, mirando todo con el ojo del poeta visual, con melancolía o con una chispa de surrealismo y -porque no- con cierta nostalgia – esa nostalgia sin rencor, que puede ser incluso sana y combativa, haciendo comparación con aspectos desagradables del mundo de hoy. Aldo Sessa crea en sus imágenes una atmósfera humana, un clima agradable y sugestivo que deja huellas profundas en nuestros sentidos.

Misteriosa Buenos Aires por Rodrigo Alonso Buenos Aires, 2012 Posiblemente no hay otro cronista visual tan identificado con Buenos Aires como Aldo Sessa.

Por más de cincuenta años, esta ciudad ha sido un tópico recurrente en su trabajo, una suerte de leitmotiv insistente que, lejos de saturar con su presencia la producción del artista, la ha potenciado con sus miles de formas de aparición diferentes. Desde las primeras imágenes en los suburbios del sur –en los entonces olvidados barrios de Barracas y La Boca, cuando Puerto Madero no existía aún– hasta la captura de la geometría precisa de su arquitectura urbana o la magnífica semblanza del Teatro Colón, Sessa ha sabido plasmar a una metrópolis que no está compuesta únicamente por edificios y formas más o menos reconocibles, sino también, por un espíritu y una magia siempre por descubrir.

Quizás esa sea la palabra que mejor describe su labor: el descubrimiento. No hay un método preciso para la confección de las imágenes, no hay planes ni encuadres preconcebidos, sino un verdadero diálogo con el entorno: un encuentro feliz. La coincidencia cómplice entre una mirada que busca revelar el encantamiento, y una ciudad que se resiste, y a cambio, redobla la fuerza de su hechizo.

En estas fotografías conviven los espacios marginales y los emblemáticos; el puerto, los ferrocarriles, algunos sitios abandonados o ignotos, con los majestuosos parques, los edificios impregnados de historia y de vínculos con la tradición europea, el arte y la cultura que atraviesa con su hálito vital el paisaje porteño. Hay, además, situaciones, personajes, momentos. El fútbol barrial y el tango en el estudio, el fotógrafo de plaza y las bailarinas que se preparan para la función, las texturas urbanas, las luces y las sombras naturales, los reflejos espontáneos, los cielos imponentes.

Sobre este extenso panorama de realidades y ensueños, Sessa imprime su impronta personal traducida en una aproximación y una sensibilidad únicas. Una perspectiva que evita las estampas turísticas, los brillos exacerbados, los estereotipos y los lugares comunes, para dar vida a los rincones menos transitados y a los seres que habitan la ciudad, profundamente. A esto se suma, en muchos casos, otra perspectiva: la histórica. Ella aporta una nueva singularidad a las imágenes: la de unos tiempos y unos lugares irrepetibles que proyectan la memoria y el legado del pasado sobre el presente.

Sin embargo, aunque las fotografías de Aldo Sessa son hoy ampliamente reconocidas, jamás el artista se ha puesto por delante de las imágenes. Por el contrario, hay un inmenso respeto por esta Buenos Aires que, cual diva de su teatro mayor, no puede ser sino una protagonista absoluta.

En la respetuosa humildad del artista, quien lleva las de ganar es el espectador, invitado a apropiarse emocionalmente de las imágenes, a hacerlas suyas. Porque esta Buenos Aires de Aldo Sessa, que es también la de todos, posee una cualidad incontestable: la de conservar intacta, en cada una de las tomas, la esencia más profunda de todo su misterio.

Buenos Aires at Aldo Sessa’s pace by curator Michael Nungesser. Berlín, 2012 Aldo Sessa’s images – one of the most renowned photographers in Argentina – cover a wide range of subjects. The country he was born in is part of the crucial world he hunts with his lens. Far from any sort of nationalism, Argentina – which is an immense country – makes up the corpus that nourishes his passion for life and lays the groundwork to stimulate his fantasy. In other words, Argentina offers him all to capture images.

As a photographic explorer, Aldo Sessa has been traveling throughout Argentine territory for years, From The Air, The Water and The Land, alluding to the title of one of his books, through all the different landscapes and climate zones. He has photographed its flora and fauna, its men and its women, its customs and buildings. He has approached some typical subjects with a stronger focus, such as the world of Gauchos or that of tango. Additionally, thousands of people have posed for his camera, contemporaries of any sort, among them, the most socially and culturally outstanding set in Argentina.

Settled in this South American nation, Aldo Sessa is also a globetrotter. He has been to Uruguay and Brazil, the United States and Israel, China, India, and Thailand, Spain, France and Great Britain and – naturally – Italy, the country his ancestors come from. With his camera, he unveiled the great capitals like Vienna, Paris, London and – above all – New York, the Big Apple, to which he dedicated entire photographic publications.

But the other big metropolis that appeals to him, that fascinates him and moves him, is – no doubt – Buenos Aires. This is the city he came to life, grew up and matured in. He has spent his entire life here, in the heart of Palermo, not far from his beloved Rosedal del Parque Tres de Febrero. He has his studio in this neighborhood of Sicilian roots, in a peaceful alley – from bygone times – surrounded by old cameras and photographs, mostly Argentinean.

Buenos Aires’s history is closely linked to generations of immigrants, by and large from the Old Continent. “This fact – the photographer explains to me in a letter – is clear in people’s features, in the architecture of different styles, in the neighborhoods, in the cafés, in tangos’ lyrics, bestowing a European city feel on Buenos Aires, turning it into the most cosmopolitan city in Latin America”.

Although its golden age, the time of economic glory at the turn of the twentieth century, has faded away, Buenos Aires is still one of the great and stately cities of the world. It was recently compared with Berlin – it has been twinned with the German Capital for just about twenty years – particularly thanks to its rich cultural life.

Just like other great capitals in the world, Buenos Aires has its portrait photographers. “Buenos Aires is made up of a number of tiny lovable things that turn it into a unique, very particular face”, states Aldo Sessa. He is one of the most loyal and sensitive photographers in this River Plate city, “a city that does not strike as picturesque at once”, as Guilermo Whitelow says – perhaps with the exception of the neighborhood of La Boca. Aldo Sessa is not a documentary maker of the city or a specialist in streetscapes specifically, nor is he a reporter although he had a few spells in this field.

Without a shadow of a doubt, his photographs of Buenos Aires are historical and social documents.

They are witnesses of Aldo Sessa’s commitment to his city “which I always walk to check and record the passage of time and its changes” – his own words in the brochure of his Exhibit at the National Fine Arts Museum at the 150th anniversary of photography.

His photographic art does not occur at the realm of phenomena, it goes well beyond it. His photographs of Buenos Aires are records of his personality and his soul. Not only do they visually express his way of seeing and observing, but also his ability to capture the world, of living it and metabolizing it.

The buildings, roads, squares and spots we see, even his neighbors, are not mere records of a complex urban organism, but elements of an individual and sensitive viewpoint on a vital and intensively lived space. Aldo Sessa “reveals – according to his friend, US writer Ray Bradbury – our reality to print yours in the emulsion behind the eye”.

The different places and characters in his photographs represent an important view on this city of the good airs (which is what Buenos Aires means in Spanish) blown away by progress, the other indivisible part is centered on focus and composition, the process of developing as well as its presentation, whether in a book or an exhibit site such as a museum. It is the framing and the atmosphere that oftentimes reveal the artistic heritage of our photographer. Professionally, Aldo Sessa started as a painter, draftsman, and graphic and audiovisual artist and later replaced the brush and pencil by the machine – as he calls the photographic camera – and immersed himself in the magic process of freezing light and time once and for all.

Each photo of Buenos Aires by Aldo Sessa means a specific moment, but in the very same instant, the city metamorphoses into a stage of life that envelops and implies sensual, touching, symbolic and allegoric elements. Each photo encloses a world in itself and can – as shown at the exhibit of the Fortabat Collection – be presented as a picture, of the same significance and weight.

Thus, Aldo Sessa’s exhibit in the museum halls is configured by a number of walls, each with a selected number of black and white photographs printed in medium- and large-size formats, accompanied by other very attractive takes in bright colors. They are all pieces of an endless mosaic that comprises countless meanings and levels of understanding. On the walls, Buenos Aires, seen through a period encompassing over half a century, seems to be a series of different stages.

On one of the walls, the city is the stage of childhood. The anonymous space of the walls and streets miraculously turns into a space of play and joy that is almost clandestinely revealed in the image of the boy who after scoring a goal wallows on the sidewalk. Any vacant lot may double as a soccer field, and soccer – teenagers’ favorite pastime – gives rise to almost acrobatic photographic scenes.

In the center of the wall, the face of a youth stares at us. It is the almost archetypical face of a poor boy who spends his time selling balloons.

The other wall – also with 1960’s views – shows the city as an industrial zone. It is a world of warehouses and chimneys, also one of dirt and trash, where bums appear as satanic passersby. There is the wall of color photos: rusty colors, those turned sepia by the passage of time, and autumnal shades that mark the long goodbye to the smoke and fire age. In the foreground, abandoned malleable pieces of iron draw a weird and disquieting composition that seizes the image while it is possible to catch a ghostly glimpse of the old Club of Fishermen in the mist on the horizon.

The labor world also thematically defines another selection. The city is now a transit area with its rivers and railroads, with ships and cranes, with crowds of sailors and fishermen. The gigantic dimensions of the urban veins emerge in the central night scene of the almost endless rail tracks. They fade in the distance where the watchful eye can make out the small figure of a human being, lost and trapped in the fusion of light and tracks. The river surface is also immense in another photograph, in which the young onlooker in the center – seeing from behind as our lookalike – appears as a silhouette or shadow, devoid of any physical trace in the face of the vital force of water.

On one side there is a street scene of yesteryear, in which the well-dressed nonno takes it easy on the sidewalk, surrounded by the younger generations, while on the other side, behind a mesh that sets us apart from them, there are a few men – restless not only by the blurry focus-, passersby from more anonymous times.

Another wall shows us the city in landscape format. In this format, the city is perceived as a world in its own right, as a planet in itself that searches other planets from an observatory. There are towers and skyscrapers, façades and bridges, palaces and skyscrapers, the great architectural constructions such as a train station and leisure places such as parks and tree-shaded squares.

Two walls are made up of a series of photographs showing different urban sites just about always from a rather unusual angle, sometimes as an intense interplay of light and shade, others as a game of real images and reflected images. In the axis of one of the walls is the couple dancing with their bodies pressed to each other, photographed from above as a living musical score. It is not any dance. It is called Tango, in capital letters – “the lock of love”, as the immense photo-mural placed on the façade of the Del Plata Building, a stone’s throw from the Obelisk, is called. On its sides, early modernity stone monuments rise, a train station and a few tall residential buildings, which turn human beings into ants.

In the other selection, the leading player of the central composition is in the background of the streetscape. It is a photographer of the square, one of the already extinct Buenos Aires characters – as in most of the world –, which survives thanks to photography. What yesteryear was fashionable, for example a “trendy” haircut, is already in the past. Everything is elusive, like the reflection of buildings and swings in the puddle.

Then, there are monothematic selections. One is devoted to the grass in the city, to the nature kingdom.

But in the two large selections, where the tapestries of fallen leaves look almost unreal, the kingdom is not clad only in green, but in other intense colors as well, thanks to the Gingko Biloba and the Jacaranda, in portrait format, fading away in the semi-darkness of the dense branches, a feline being and a couple of artistic hands dancing appear as guardians.

Two very different emblematic national monuments are another two subjects. The Colón Theater, which according to Manuel Mujica Lainez “it is one of the luxuries of our city”, meant to Aldo Sessa, for many years, an intense field of activities proclaiming its life and glory, quoting the title of the book to be published then. Now, it is possible to see it in some extraordinary takes in subtle, almost monochromatic colors that symbolically summarize the atmosphere of this dramatic, history-dense world.

Another historical monument – built later on – that appeals to him is the Obelisk, built right in a junction of avenues, as a reminder of the four centuries of life of the capital city. He has greeted it in many of his urban expeditions, in daylight and at night, in cold or rainy weather, raining or scorching, from a distance or up close, scraping always different skies. He also accompanies the citizen reflected in a puddle. And he is always surrounded by different players and atmospheres. Man and obelisk bonded in a meteorological-metaphoric embrace.

How does the lady from the River Plate reveal herself in Aldo Sessa’s photos? It is a world mostly in the open air. It is the world of a noble and suave observer, waking relentlessly, gazing at everything through the eye of a visual poet, with melancholy and a touch of surrealism and – why not – with some nostalgia – that nostalgia with no resentment, which can even be wholesome and combative, drawing a comparison with disagreeable features in today’s world. Aldo Sessa creates a human atmosphere, an agreeable and suggestive ambience that leaves deep imprints in our senses.

Mysterious Buenos Aires

There is perhaps no other visual chronicler so identified with Buenos Aires as Aldo Sessa.

For more than fifty years, this city has been a recurrent subject in his work, a sort of insistent leitmotiv that, far from overstaying in this artist’s production, has boosted it with its thousand different fashions of revealing itself. From the early images in the southern suburbs – in the then overlooked Barracas and La Boca neighborhoods, when Puerto Madero had not still come to life – to the capture of the precise geometry of its urban architecture or the magnificent presence of the Teatro Colón, Sessa has had the expertise to show a metropolis that is not only made up of somewhat recognizable buildings and shapes, but also of a spirit and a magic always waiting to be discovered.

That may very well be the word that best describes his work: discovery. There is no precise method to create images, no preconceived plans or frames, but a true dialogue with the environment: a happy encounter. The knowing coincidence between a look that seeks to disclose the spell and a city that does not agree to it and, in exchange, redoubles the force of the spell it casts.

In these photographs coexist marginal and emblematic spaces; the harbor, the railroads, and some abandoned or unknown places with stately parks, buildings impregnated with the history of Europe as well as links with European tradition, art and culture that cut through the Buenos Aires landscape with their vital breath. There are, also, situations, characters, moments. Neighborhood soccer games and tango in the studio, the photographer in the square and the dancers making themselves ready for their performance, the urban textures, the natural lights and shadows, the spontaneous reflection, the imposing skies.

In this wide-ranging overview of realities and dreams, Sessa places his personal imprint translated into a unique approach and sensitivity. A perspective that avoids tourist cards, deep glitter, stereotypes, and commonplaces, in order to give life to the least trodden spots and to the people who inhabit the city, profoundly. In addition to this, in many cases, there is another perspective: the historical one. It provides a uniqueness of the images: that of unrepeatable times and places that project the memory and the legacy of the past onto the present.

Nevertheless, although Aldo Sessa’s photographs are today widely known, never has the artist positioned himself before the images. Quite the opposite, there is deep respect for this Buenos Aires that, like a Diva in her greatest theater, cannot be anything but an absolute protagonist. In the artist’s respectful humility, the viewers end up having the upper hand, whom is invited to appropriate of the images, to make them theirs. Because Aldo Sessa’s Buenos Aires, which also belongs to everyone, has an irrefutable quality: keeping, in each take, the most profound essence of all its mystery intact.
