THE POWER OF “WHY”

WHY Is the most radically effective question about reality. Each question is meant to spark our imagination and excite our aspiration. By WONDER, the human spirit is feasting. It motivates every one to love, dream, feel their needs, look forward to hope, and suspend judgement to believe or take a leap of faith. But, it can also trigger fear and cause people to grow wary. Man’s ability to imagine is a remarkable gift he has received in order to lead others to happiness through the attainment of his ambition. Sometimes, this comes out of despair and disillusion.

So many times, man asks “why do I have to suffer this much in life instead of having a perfect one: a perfect world, a perfect country, a perfect home, a perfect job, or a perfect mate?” Man dreams about perfection, abundance, money, glory, and quantitative or qualitative change. He desires to be happy. He fantasizes about good or evil, about the achievement of success, the encounter of failure or defeat, and lastly, about the past and future.

Wondering or contesting propels everyone to discover the suitable answer pertaining to the intricacies and paradoxes in life. The question “Why” triggers him to achieve his goals. It inspires all: to work, marry, pro-create, raise families, and contribute to improve the self and society.

As the saying goes: “No man is an island.” That means, man, basically can not dissociate himself from the society. Aristotle said, man is a political animal. This is why he invests in other people’s works. For instance, in books, movies, dancing, singing, ball games, and even camping.

Man, by his volition, is used to wondering since childhood. Life devoid of proper questioning of assets and methodology is doomed to die. It’s a boring life. One has to develop positive self-talk in order to grow in wisdom. As Socrates said: “An unexamined or uninvestigated life is not worth living.” One

should Keep on asking in order to explore, learn and re-learn, comprehend, strive, and survive, seek pleasure and avoid pain, attempt, anticipate, correct, describe, solve, and achieve the desired result. Whatever purpose man may have right now, it shall proceed from the Power of WHY

For instance, once one says he wants to get married or get something done in order to drawout a substantial purpose, he has to ask himself “Why do I have to get married or get this thing done right

Wow! Liberty Autoworx’s newest brand ambassador; WeHoops basketball feedback, PSA-Crosstown Auto Centre league starts, Willie Miller coming to Edmonton

SPORTS JOURNAL

Moses Billacura mocolumnist @albertafilipinojournal.com

Moses Billacura was a sports correspondent for national newspapers in the Philippines since 1992 and served as sports editor and columnist for a community paper before moving to Canada in 2010. He loves photography, manages pinoyedmontonnews. com and strongly believes that sports development is for all.

Iam happy to know that Fil-Can Kalabaw Basketball League standout Raymark Dizon, who runs Liberty Autoworx with loving wife Pia, has signed up Evander Kane as their brand ambassador.

Liberty Autoworx has been Edmonton’s full-service auto detailing expert since 2017 and the basketball community is happy to know that Kane has agreed to be their ambassador.

We could not help but talk about this on air with DJ Rolan Latorre over 580AM. You see, any Edmonton Oiler player as a client is great for a Filipinoowned business.

Congratulations Raymark and Pia, and we hope to see you in the opening of the 2024 season of the Fil-Can Kalabaw Basketball League at the McCauley School gym.

We would also like to congratulate the organizers of WeHoops Basketball in Wetaskiwin led by Chris Mission and Gerald Achazo for a successful tournament.

The tournament has included a girl’s division and it is worth noting that WeHoops has paved the way for girl’s basketball development. When I go to Filipino basketball tournaments, it is usually just the boys, so hopefully WeHoops will keep this program to encourage other girls to get into basketball as a sport.

One thing that I also noticed after their tournament is that Mission and Achazo are encouraging those who took part in the event, be they players or spectators to provide them with feedback.

This is the first time I heard

of a local basketball association reaching out to their fans to give them their observations and by all means, provide their comments.

Looks like Chris, Gerald and their team of volunteers are very serious about improving their tournament for the next season and I can see that WeHoops will truly grow as a basketball league and organization.

Congratulations, WeHoops!

Teaming up for the Games

Thousands of Alberta’s best athletes, coaches and visitors from across the province will gather for the 25th Alberta Winter Games in 2026.

The province’s top junior athletes will come together in the M.D. of Bonnyville, City of Cold Lake, Town of Bonnyville and Village of Glendon. Athletes aged 11 to 16 will qualify for the Games through zone playoffs for their specific sport and through selections held throughout the province. Previous Winter Games have seen athletes compete across a variety of sports, including ringette, hockey, skiing and speedskating.

The Winter Games bolster local economies in rural Alberta, with the 2020 Winter Games bringing in almost 10,000 visitors and providing an economic benefit of more than $2 million for the host city of Airdrie. The Games also provide a legacy of improved recreation infrastructure and bind communities together with enhanced community spirit.

Our exceptional recreation infrastructure and warm hospitality will leave athletes, coaches, parents and technical officials with a desire to keep coming back," said Scott Cyr, MLA for Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul.

With the location selected, the Alberta Games planning committee can begin planning and selecting the exact dates for the Games, as well as which sports will be included. Well, rating from one (1) to ten (10), what score are you giving or how do you assess the Filipino’s mindset and hospitality?

Minister Hussen: “I would say, 10. I felt very welcomed. The government in the Philippines really wants to partner with Canada on clean energy, on environmental act and on all climate actions, gender initiatives and agreements, empowerment initiatives, as well as economic developments. So, I was very much encouraged by the level of collaboration and openness to further working together on these issues. I am very much impressed by the work that the government of the Philippines is doing on these issues.”

This is a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase our area's warmth, hospitality and passion for sports. Together, we will create lasting memories and a legacy of excellence for our region. Let the Games begin!," said Elisa Brosseau, mayor, Town of Bonnyville.

“The Village of Glendon is excited and honoured to partner with our neighbouring communities

because they treated as you are?

Minister Hussen: “No, no, no!… I did not feel that way. I am always happy to engage and see how we support and work together. I felt very welcomed and valued as a human being. I felt the warm of your hospitality. I felt very warm by the Filipino Hospitality and looking forward to be back Philippines so I can see the new developments and how we can work together or collaboratively.”

AFJ: in the realm of Sociology, there’s a leading principle that says, scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours, also known as the Social Exchange Theory. Do you think, Canada is doing this for something in return?

Minister Hussen: “Canada’s approach to International

We look forward to seeing athletes and their families from all over the province passing through all our communities, utilizing our facilities, making memories, achieving goals, receiving medals, and even possibly getting a picture next to the world’s largest perogy.

Good luck to all the athletes preparing for the 2026 Alberta Winter Games – see you in 2026!," said Nicholas Werstiuk, mayor, Village of Glendon.

The first Alberta Winter Games took place in Banff in 1976 and the event has gone on to become a staple in Alberta’s sports community. Since 1988, when the Olympic Games were

Development is Win-Win. We want win-win trade and investment, win-win and inclusive economic development, win-win diplomacy. So, our focus really is to make sure that can work together in common challenge. I’ll give you an example, it’s not enough for Canada to address biodiversity laws by ourselves. We need to work with countries like the Philippines and other parts of the world so we can address it in a way that really ensures saving our planet.” We cannot do it alone. So, if Canada alone addresses biodiversity within our borders, that is not enough. We need to channel to other countries like the Philippines. We need, let’s say for example, of a partner who’s facing the same challenges like Canada. If we can work together, we can work on more progress together. What happens outside Canada will affect us directly.

held in Calgary, 49 Alberta Winter Games athletes have represented Canada at Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 2026 Games will build on the much-anticipated 2024 Alberta Winter Games, which are being held Feb. 16-19 in Grande Prairie. More than 2,500 athletes, coaches, managers and technical officials will participate in 17 sports this year.

The Alberta Games have been a proud part of Alberta’s sport community for almost 50 years and Alberta’s government is committed to ensuring their continued success.(Province of Alberta News Release)

AFJ: Any parting words, Minister?

Minister Hussen: “It was a pleasure to work and bring our two countries even closer. In fact, my colleague, Minister of Agriculture and and Agri-Food, Lawrence Mac Aulay, is going to the Philippines this month to again continue the collaboration and make sure we are working on common issues together.”

AFJ: Thanks you very much too, Minister Hussen for connecting with us through your office and considering the Alberta Filipino Journal as one of your media outlets. Looking forward to communicating and hearing more project announcements from you in the future. Your interviewer, Lito Velasco.

Changes to Canada’s International Student Program: What you need to know

FROM MIGRATION TO IMMIGRATION

Marjorie Carmona Newman is a REGULATED CANADIAN IMMIGRATION CONSULTANT based in Edmonton, Alberta. She is currently a Board of Director of the Canadian Association of Professional Immigration Consultants (CAPIC). A recipient of CAPIC’s Members Service Award for six consecutive years. A recipient of Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in Dec 2022. Golden Balangay Awards Winner for Excellence in Community Service in July 2023.

Drastic changes have been made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada or IRCC to the International Student Program. Canada’s Minister of Immigration announced several changes to the study permit program firstly, a two-year cap on the number of international students who are issued study permits.

1. Cap and Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

As per most recent announcement, as of 8:30 am on January 22, 2024, most new post-secondary international students at the college or undergraduate level must provide a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from a province or territory with their study permit application. IRCC will return any application received that does not include a PAL, unless otherwise exempt. This attestation will serve as proof that the student has been accounted for under a provincial or territorial allocation within the national cap.

International students whose applications were received by IRCC before 8:30 am on Jan 24, 2024, as well as those who have already been approved for a study permit and intend to travel to Canada for an upcoming program, do not need to take further action as a result of the cap. Who needs a provincial attestation letter?

-most post-secondary study permit applicants -most non-degree granting graduate programs (for example, certificate programs and graduate diplomas)

-anyone else not included in the exception below Who does not need a provincial attestation letter?

- primary and secondary school students

- master’s or doctoral degree students

- visiting or exchange students

- in Canada study permit and work permit holders (include study permit holders applying for an extension)

- in Canada family members of study permit or work permit holders

- students whose application was received by IRCC before 8:30 am ET on January 22, 2024

Per the Canada Gazette dated Feb 3, 2024, IRCC will accept study permit applications but will not exceed 606 250 study permit applications for one year beginning Jan 22, 2024. Study permit applications that are within the scope of these instructions received by the Department after the maximum number of study permit applications

has been reached will not be accepted for processing and processing fees will be returned.

2. Post-graduation work permit (PGWP) update for graduate’s of master’s degree programs Starting Feb 15, 2024, a longer 3-year post graduation work permit will be available to those who are graduating from a master’s degree program that is less than 2 years and who meet all other PGWP eligibility criteria. The length of PGWPs for programs other than master’s degrees will continue to align with the length of the study program, to a maximum of 3 years.

Who is eligible for longer post-graduation work permit (PGWP)?

- Graduates of programs that are at least two years in length at PGWP-eligible designated learning institutions are eligible for a 3-year PGWP, are graduates of master’s degree programs less than 2 years in length.

3. PGWP eligibility for public-private partnership college programs

Some provinces allow public colleges to license their curriculum to be delivered by an affiliated private college. In these cases, students physically attend a private college, but graduate with a diploma from a public institution. Concerns have been raised with regard to the quality of education provided by these institutions, as well as lack of sufficient supports.

As such, IRCC has made a change to restrict PGWPs for these institutions, anticipating that without the ability to apply for a PGWP there will be a reduction in the number of international students enrolling in them.

Who is eligible for a PGWP after graduating from a public-private partnership college program?

- International students currently enrolled will

remain eligible for a PGWP if they meet other program eligibility criteria.

Who is not eligible for a PGWP after graduating from a publicprivate partnership college program?

- New students enrolling in this type of program will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.

4. Changes to open work permit eligibility for spouses In the coming weeks, eligibility for open work permits for the spouses and commonlaw partners of international students will be updated. Who can get an open work permit?

- Eligibility is limited to the spouses and common-law partners of students in graduate (master’s and doctorate) and professional degree-granting programs only. Once these changes are in effect, spouses and common-law partners of international students seeking to extend their existing work permit will continue to be eligible under this stream.

Who will not be eligible for an open work permit?

- The spouses and commonlaw partners of internationals students in other levels of study, including undergraduate and college programs, will no longer be eligible for an open work permit unless they already hold an open work permit under this stream.

Winning the battle against red tape

As Red Tape Awareness Week kicks off, Alberta’s government has met its goal of cutting red tape by onethird, with no plans to put the scissors away.

The government set a goal of cutting one-third of red tape to save Albertans time and money while simplifying procedures within the government. All ministries have worked together to identify opportunities to streamline processes, eliminate redundancies and introduce new efficiencies.

This ongoing dedication means

that Alberta has been recognized as a top red tape reduction performer by the Canadian Federation for Independent Business for three consecutive years, receiving an A-minus in 2022 and 2023, preceded by an A in 2021. In addition, Alberta received a B-plus in Restaurants Canada’s 2022 Raise the Bar report and was awarded the “Best in Class” among provinces, an improvement over the B grade received in 2019 and 2017.

“Unnecessary red tape often creeps up slowly, hampering ingenuity, efficiency and growth. It hurts our

economy and it hurts Albertans. Streamlining processes isn’t just a goal; it’s a promise to cultivate a business-friendly environment, increase job opportunities and position our province as a leader in efficiency and innovation. It’s a promise we intend to keep.”

Danielle Smith, Premier

Almost 700 red tape reduction initiatives have been completed since 2019. Initiatives have ranged from updating forms to redesigning program delivery, but all contributed toward more efficient and effective

operations across all departments and improved service delivery for Albertans.

The government’s efforts in red tape reduction have continued to change the culture across government to regulate only when needed, and with the lightest touch possible. This means focusing on outcomes, not overly prescriptive rules, to continue to ensure the health and safety of Albertans and the protection of Alberta’s environment.

This leaner, outcome-based approach to regulating has also meant that for every regulatory requirement added since 2019, four have been eliminated.

“Our attitude about red tape is simple: when we find it, we cut it. We’re proud that we’ve hit our one-third milestone, but we’re not done yet. We will continue to work with Albertans and industry experts to make changes that drive economic growth and job creation.”

Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction

Even though this milestone has been met, Alberta’s government is not slowing down. The Ministry of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction will continue to work with Albertans and industry experts to implement high-impact changes that drive economic growth and job creation and make Albertans’ lives easier. Albertans are encouraged to continue sharing their ideas online.

“St. Albert continues to actively work to reduce red tape as part of our council priority to support economic prosperity in our city. We remain committed to creating a government that encourages investment, development and progress in our community.”

Sheena Hughes, deputy mayor, City of St. Albert

“We acknowledge Minister Dale Nally’s pivotal role in shaping a more efficient, transparent and consumer-friendly business environment. Minister Nally, your dedication to red tape reduction and service excellence is admirable and we are grateful for the positive transformations you have brought to the business community.”

Rosanna Fischer, KDM Management, and chair, St. Albert Chamber of Commerce

“The Alberta government’s campaign on red tape reduction has been critical in receiving our business licence and occupancy permits in record time. The expedited timeline was essential to our Crumbl Cookies opening on time and bringing new jobs into the community. The permit approvals were seamless, allowing us to open and earn revenue, which is the ultimate goal for entrepreneurs and business owners alike.”

Resources for the LGBT Community

The goal of this article is to provide resources for support and help to whose who identify as LGBTQ2s+. Health issues, discrimination, increased likelihood of abuse and suicide, poor treatment in the workplace or schools, is something that should be addressed. And there are times that being part of the LGBTQ2s+ community means that additional context is needed to get the help needed, which can be better met by specific agencies or initiatives. Here is an introduction of resources that can be helpful.

Preliminary Suggestion: Pronouns in Email Signatures

Before I start with the actual resources, I would like to suggest one activity anyone can consider. In your email signature or your

name tags at work or at events, you can add your pronouns. Why is this valuable? It signifies to the LGBT community that you are understanding and an inclusive person. As an example, in my personal email, my signature looks like this: Giselle General (pronouns she/her) then my title and contact information.

Resources for Community and Support

1. The Rainbow Page: The Rainbow Pages is a comprehensive catalogue developed by The Family Centre in Edmonton and surrounding area. The online version can be found at www. therainbowpages.ca. The physical booklet can be found at many in-person events or booths that are set up by organizations that support the LGBTQ2s+

community. Organizations can request copies to have available in their own locations as well.

2. Pride Centre of Edmonton: The Pride Centre offers a library, peer counselling, community groups, advocacy and resources for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and questioning individuals. The website is: www. pridecentreofedmonton.ca/

3. Queer YEG: Provides a directory of businesses in Edmonton that are welcoming of people of all sexual orientations. It is an active directory where you can check out all the businesses and have your business to the list as well. It offers a wide range of services from legal, communications, pet care, real estate, restaurants, and more. The website is: www. queeryeg.ca/

4. LGBT Centres in PostSecondary Institutions: Postsecondary institutions like NAIT, MacEwan University, University of Alberta and more not only have student clubs, but also actual departments that aim to provide help and support to the LGBT community. By going directly to the main website, it is easy to find information about online resources and locations of offices for support. As an example, NAIT has a page for LGBTQ Community Resources and they celebrate Pride Week. The University of Alberta has a group called OUTreach as

well as the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services. MacEwan University has The Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD).

Religious Institutions that are LGBT Friendly

Artographers: Meaning-makers, Animators, and Marketers

GAZING BEYOND

February is characterized by flowers, greeting cards, chocolates, dinner dates, or sentimental reels and postings. Once again, the expressions of positive relationships are in the air. Examples of February pop culture include Valentine's Day, Family Day (Canada), and Arts Month (Philippines) which have been continuously shaping our culture. These February traditions

are created and enjoyed by individuals (like you and me) or groups of people engaged in hybrid roles of inquiring, designing, producing, translating, expressing, migrating, utilizing, and commercializing. In this article, we “gaze beyond” pop-culture’s materiality by demonstrating how a/r/tography is practiced in complex processes. This involves the creation, dissemination, utilization, understanding, appreciation and eventually engaging audiences toward participation and consumption.

What is artography?

According to popular authors on the subject like Heaton and Burnhard (2022) and Rita Irwin (2017), it is a discipline rooted in art education. They explained the term as a concept, method, framework, practice, creative pedagogy, or inquiry that is useful across disciplines. It transcends from a material form (objects) into seeing the intangibles (experiences and meanings) of matters through the hybrid processes performed by the roles of an artist, researcher, and teacher, or the ‘a/r/t/ographer’.

The intertwined roles of the

artographer become a powerful conveyor of art forms and substance toward achieving their purpose. How is artography practiced?

To explain the concept and process, a sample painting (see “The Kiss”) is analyzed. The shapes immediately sensed by your eyes are the avian/ snake tongues centered on the canvas. These were morphed to ‘hint’ something different from reality. Observable are abstracted pairs of hand-like or beak-like shapes. The forms then evoke a certain level of mystery and interest upon viewing. These are likened to two birds’ beaks, meeting at some point to suggest the act of kissing. It leads the viewer to interpret the beaks, as of the birds, lovers, two organizations, loving couples, and running in a continuum of interpretations. With your eyes moving around, you can also see curvy lines forming the letters “M” or “W” (man and woman) thus, qualifying the art as the story of a heterosexual relationship. Looking further, you can also see similar “Ms”-and-“Ws” (in brown color lines) surrounding the central images that resemble

dragonflies’ wings. Asking the artist, “What do these wings stand for?”, it characterizes the low-flying dragonflies as a metaphor for their swift and gentle hovering on grass stalks (i.e. kissing, as something gentle and private). Similarly, the M-and-W as outlined with thicker black broad strokes also show finer letters M-and-W within them that contain black spots shaped like almonds and a keyhole. These black shapes contrasting against the colorful background represent the sensual holes.

Hearing from the artist’s

explanations of the painting elements, we can identify the observations and meaning-making contained in his art, thus, making him a researcher. Consequently, by crafting an artist’s statement for his painting or delivering art conversations, the intangible aspects of his art become known and educational, thus making him a teacher/psychologist. He then inspires behaviours, or memories on his person and content upon his learners and audiences. The marketer in the artist further suggested that the painting is ideal to be hung in the bedroom or family room as it symbolizes love and relationships. Towards the end, the intertwined roles of the artographer produce a palatable product that is communicated for education and patronage.

Sarah Hoffman’s Launch Speech

February 11, 2024 at the Woodcroft Community League

Good morning!

I’m Sarah Hoffman!

I am a proud New Democrat! And I am running to be the next Premier of Alberta!

Thank you!

Thank you to Chantal for MCing today… and yes… we are going to win in Spruce Grove-Stony Plain.

Thank you Katherine Swampy for welcoming us all to Treaty Six and for grounding us all in this place.

Thank you Nathan Ip for that kind introduction.

And thank you both for volunteering to serve as our campaign co-chairs.

… And thank you all for coming here this morning on Superbowl Sunday!

I hope you noticed that I dressed for the Super Bowl… I put on my Taylor Swift red lipstick!

I’m so happy to be with you all today in Woodcroft Hall, which is where my elected provincial career began… at a contested nomination to be your Alberta NDP candidate in EdmontonGlenora.

And together… we beat a Conservative cabinet minister, we took this riding for the first time EVER, and we formed the first NDP government in Alberta!

Let’s do it again!

We must do it again… because our values as New Democrats are critical to solving the problems we’re facing today.

We must fix our public healthcare after five years of UCP sabotage.

We must get every Albertan a safe and affordable home after five years of UCP cruelty.

And we must respond urgently to the climate crisis that threatens our way of life.

Let me tell you how I got here in the first place. Let me take you back to where it really all began, partly because my mom is here.

Hi Mom! Please Stand up!

Can we get a cheer for my mom?

My mom will know this history, but some of you may not. I was raised in a small town… actually a hamlet, called Kinuso. It’s between Slave Lake and High Prairie. A couple of hundred people live there. It’s surrounded by Swan River First Nation. My dad was the principal at our public school, and my mom taught kindergarten.

Ralph Klein was the premier. His cuts were brutal… and our school was struggling.

I remember my dad having every other light bulb in the school removed to try to save enough money to save a teacher’s job. I had so much respect for the work my mom and dad did to help kids in our community. And I wanted to be a teacher too.

But when I told my dad that… he told me not to.

He said teachers aren’t respected in Alberta. We’re not valued by our own government. But like most times that somebody told me something would be difficult, I did it anyway!

I came here to Edmonton to study. When I was training to be a teacher I got involved in the NDP.

One time… Jack Layton came to visit and I volunteered to drive him around. I went to pick him up in my little Honda Fit Hatchback. I was so excited and worried it wouldn’t be fancy enough.

I saw him walk out from the airport security area and headed straight over to him with a big smile on my face. I put my hand out and I said, “Hi Jack!” – in the middle of the airport.

But we both made it out of the building without getting arrested and I was lucky to help out several more times when he came back to Edmonton. Jack’s schedule was always intense. He told me he worked hard to be this busy.

Leading our party was a joy for him and he was so proud to work that hard in service of the NDP and of our values.

Those volunteer opportunities turned into a job with the NDP caucus… and about 6 months later... there was this new MLA called Rachel Notley. She and I worked closely together, especially on issues of child welfare.

As a result… cuts to foster families were reversed… two PC cabinet ministers were fired… and the Children’s Advocate became an independent officer of the legislature.

One night we were watching the Edmonton Public School Board respond to Conservative cuts by closing five neighborhood schools.

Rachel turned to me and said “you should run for the school board.” This was 2010 and the Conservatives wanted to close dozens of neighborhood schools.I hadn’t really considered running for public office before.

Women like me aren’t supposed to go into politics. I’m fat! I’m sassy! And I’m really bad at pretending to be something that I’m not. I would have to go up against a well-known incumbent trustee, who was a principal and assistant superintendent before that.

But if those schools closed, then hundreds of families would have to put their kids on long bus rides to overcrowded schools.

So I said, “let’s go do it!”

And a group of feisty NDP volunteers got together. We fundraised for a leaflet! I bought a new pair of running shoes and we started knocking. We walked that leaflet all over the ward and we talked to people on their doorsteps.

That was the whole campaign.

We knew it would be difficult but we did it anyway. I ran, and I won, and we kept those schools open! We kept those kids learning in their neighborhood schools, and we saved the jobs of the staff who supported their learning.

It’s great to see so many teachers, CUPE members, and Edmonton-Public families here today. I am very proud of my record as a two-term trustee and as Chair of the Edmonton Public School Board. I was 30 years old, and in charge of a billion-dollar budget, and it was a steep learning curve. But I had some fantastic progressive people working alongside me, like Michael Janz. Whatever happened to that guy anyway? Later Nathan Ip and Ray Martin joined too.

We brought in the first comprehensive policy to protect 2SLGBTQ+ Staff, Families and Students.

That’s my record, and you know I will always stand up for human rights… and that absolutely means standing up for trans rights.

I was Chair of the school board in 2015, when Rachel asked me to run provincially. She said to me “instead of trying to limit the damage to our schools from this Conservative government… how about we go and change the government?”

It wouldn’t be easy. I was going up against an incumbent Conservative cabinet minister. But with the help of so many of you in this room… We ended 44 years of one-party rule in this province. We gave progressive Albertans a real choice… something to feel excited about voting for.

And for me, that started in this room. As your Minister of Health…

I ended the Conservatives experiments in privatizing healthcare and I built the Calgary Cancer Centre and the new

emergency room at the Mis, here in Edmonton. I changed the law to stop harassment outside abortion clinics and made sure we were the first province in Canada to fully fund the abortion pill. I dramatically cut wait times for breast cancer surgery. I connected more parents with midwives than ever before. And I followed the science of harm reduction… and that saves lives.

My friends, I am so proud of what we achieved together in our first Alberta NDP government. Help me out with something… remind me.

Who built and modernized hundreds of schools?

Yes we did!

Who legally protected the rights and privacy of students who wanted to form a Gay-Straight Alliance or a Queer-Straight Alliance? AND WHO cut child poverty in half?

I am so proud of our record… and every one of you… every New Democrat… should be proud of it as well.

But friends… our work is not finished. In fact… we know things have gotten much much worse in the past five years under the UCP. Every day we see our public healthcare sabotaged by Danielle Smith.

Longer waits for emergency care… longer drives for rural parents to deliver their baby far from home… and so many Albertans can’t even find a family doctor. Just last month, Alberta withdrew from a national kidney donation program… because we don’t have enough surgical capacity anymore. That’s outrageous!

Harry Singh, the Alberta NDP candidate for Drayton Valley-Devon. Hi-fiving with Sarah.

I commit to you that as your Premier… I will rebuild our publicly-funded, publicly-delivered healthcare to the world-class standard that Albertans deserve!

Public healthcare is in our DNA as New Democrats… and so is housing.

Our most vulnerable neighbors are forced into tents in minus-forty and then forced into overwhelmed and unsafe emergency shelters. That’s heartbreaking.

Young people in rural communities trying to start a career or a family are struggling to find a home they can afford. Rents in Calgary are rising faster than anywhere else in the country. Working people are missing meals to try to cover their rent or their mortgage payment.

So many Albertans are struggling with the cost of living and their single biggest expense is keeping a roof overhead.

As your Premier… I will fix the housing crisis! We will build new homes and keep them affordable.

And I won’t stop until we get the job done!

A few weeks ago… I was meeting some folks in Red Deer and I shared that I was thinking about running for the leadership. And I asked them what they were looking for in a leader.

And one of them said “Well, I’m really worried about climate change, but I don’t think we’re allowed to talk about that.” Well guess what?

We’re going to talk about climate change!

When it’s barely February and farmers are already preparing for a catastrophic drought… We need to talk about climate change!

When hundreds of thousands of Canadians were on evacuation orders in the face of last summer’s wildfires… We need to talk about climate change!

When we can’t let our kids go outside on a summer day because the air isn’t safe to breathe… We need to do more than talk about climate change – we need to take action!

And maybe that’s going to be difficult… but I’m going to do it anyway!

If not now, then when? And if not us, then who?

We must win the next election to take the urgent action that so many Albertans are counting on us to do. I’ve won five elections in a row by working my ass off and staying true to my values.

And as your leader I will return us to government in 2027!

This leadership contest is about who we are as New Democrats. We’re going to have some differences of opinion… and that’s healthy.

But I am not running for leader to offer you some kind of repackaged Liberal Party. That’s not who I am.

I am… and always will be… a proud Alberta New Democrat.

That’s the party I knock doors for in every corner of the

province… the party I raise money for … and the party I recruited so many candidates to run for.

It’s the Alberta NDP that came so very close to winning last year… and it’s the Alberta NDP that will win the next election.

I pledge to show up, in person, and build our party with you. In Edmonton. In Calgary. In communities large and small across the province.

I come from rural Alberta… and it’s not ok with me that my hometown - Kinuso! - has a UCP MLA.

That is going to change! I pledge a positive leadership campaign about forward-looking ideas, free from personal attacks in public or in private.

I invite my fellow contestants to join me in that pledge.

And lastly I pledge to you that I will never be shy about confronting the lies of the UCP. I will always speak up for our values and our record. You know who I am!

I’m a proud New Democrat with a proven record of getting the job done.

I invite you to join me. I invite you to volunteer… to donate… to bring your friends along.

Let’s build a party that we’re proud of. Let’s build the Alberta NDP! The time is now!

Thank you so much!

Diagnosing PTSD

Psychological Interventions for PTSD

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR):

We are now entering into the season of Lent. As we begin this sacred season, the church is asking us to pray more, observe fasting and practice almsgiving. Why these three? Mainly because we have 3 major spiritual enemies namely pride, lust, and greed.

Prayer cancels pride. Fasting cancels lust. Giving cancels greed. Jesus is inviting us to develop these secret weapons as our shield. Pray secretly. Give anonymously and fast joyfully. Do it to please the Father, not to be known by people. My dear friends, lent is inviting us to return to the Lord. Be reconciled to God. Never delay your conversion. Stop postponing your renewal. Usapang Pederal

Our Liberal government is moving forward with unwavering support to Canadians, including the vibrant Filipino community in Alberta and throughout the country. We're working hard every day to make sure everyone has the chance to succeed and enjoy a good life here in Canada. This means making it easier for people who've trained in other countries to work in their fields here, making life more affordable for middle-class families, and addressing the needs of folks experiencing homelessness. Let's talk about how we're advancing these priorities and what they means to you and your family.

One of our big initiatives is to expedite the process for individuals who’ve immigrated to Canada with skills and qualifications from other countries to work in their chosen fields. This is crucial for integrating skilled immigrants into our workforce and enriching our economy. We know that many Filipinos in Alberta and across Canada are ready to contribute their talents and skills in various in-demand sectors, including healthcare.

Recently, Randy announced our government’s $86 million investment to expedite the credential recognition process for 6,600 individuals. This initiative will enable doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers from the Filipino community and beyond to contribute more quickly, filling essential roles and boosting our economy. By streamlining this process, we not only accelerate the integration of immigrants but also address critical labour shortages across various sectors.

Since 2015, our government has been committed to investing in the well-being of our middle class. We are focused on delivering tangible results that enhance the quality of life for middle-class Canadians. This includes middle class tax cuts, enhanced Canada Child Benefits (CCB), and investments in healthcare and education. Our measures aim to alleviate financial pressures, improve access to essential services, and provide opportunities for growth and advancement.

Furthermore, we are committed to building a sustainable economy that offers high-quality jobs and supports innovation and entrepreneurship. These efforts aim to ensure that the middle class, the backbone of our economy, will continue to proper in the rapidly changing global economy.

In recent times, the issue of homelessness, intensified by extreme weather conditions, is another critical challenge that demands our urgent attention and action. Our government is committed to implementing comprehensive strategies to provide shelter and support to those in need. Through investments in affordable housing, emergency shelters, and long-term support services, we strive to ensure that no Canadian is left without a safe place to call home.

Our approach recognizes the multifaceted nature of homelessness and aims to address its root causes, including mental health and addition, economic disparity, and the lack of affordable housing. Our goal is to provide immediate relief and create sustainable pathways forward for people experiencing homelessness.

Creating a fairer future for everyone in Canada requires a collective effort and a shared commitment to progress. Our government is dedicated to leading this charge, but we also recognize the importance of collaboration with provinces, territories, Indigenous partners, local communities, and individual Canadians.

Our Liberal team is dedicated to making life more affordable and building an economy that works for all Canadians. While we have made progress, there is still a lot of work ahead. We invite you to share your thoughts on how we can work together to deliver results for Albertans and build a stronger, fairer, more competitive, more affordable, more inclusive, and more sustainable economy. We look forward to hearing from all of you, contact our offices directly and share your ideas with us.

Alpha Phi Omega Alberta Alumni Association’s Christmas Party and 98th Founding Anniversary

“Malamig ang simoy ng hangin, kay saya ng bawat damdamin. Ang tibok ng puso sa dibdib, para bang hulog na ng langit”

These gentle and soft melodies of a Pinoy Christmas song take you back to your native country which nurtured you during your younger years. These distinct lyrics convey a sense of jubilation and joyous anticipation as Brothers and Sisters enter the venue, where things take on a magical turn. The members of the Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association of Alberta joyfully gathered to celebrate the 98th International Founding Anniversary of APO Worldwide. It was an Anniversary Ball and a Christmas Party rolled into one, and the atmosphere was undeniably festive. A family affair, the excitement during the event reached a crescendo as handclasps, beso besos, and hugs become the norm. What made it more significant is the first time participation of newlyarrived Brods and Sisses from the Philippines and elsewhere in Canada, coupled with those who returned to the fold. The welcome was so warm and exuberant, and the dance floor was red hot. Recognitions were handed out and the changing of The Guards took place in an orderly fashion. The event was capped with the traditional APO Toast Song. Onwards to the 100th International Founding Anniversary, 2 years shy from now…

J.O.B. WELL DONE!

Meet Bhelle, your go-to host for a decade of unforgettable entertainment!

The journey began in the captivating world of hosting, and now it’s time to elevate the excitement to a whole new level. While I’ve confidently commanded the live stage for years, I must admit, facing the camera brings out a bit of shyness. Behind the scenes, I play multiple roles as one of the hosts, contributing my knowledge and learning alongside the talented team.

Get ready for a show where the unexpected is the norm. Our target audience is everyone, but the first season’s episodes will focus on Temporary Foreign Workers. Here are three compelling reasons to tune in:

● Feel a sense of connection – you’re not alone in this journey.

● Experience extraordinary entertainment that’s not just fun but also informative.

● Dive into a must-see podcast covering everything under the sun in each episode.

When I’m not rocking the stage as a sales specialist, you might find me in a hospital or pursuing my first love – designing and constructing buildings. I am a product of my own choices. Reflecting on my 44 years of existence in this world reminds me so much of many challenges and changes that life had thrown on me. For sure life wasn’t easy and there are times when I just wanted to quit and give up. But then again, I have to remind myself of all the beautiful things that life has given me as well. Counting all the blessings and good things that happened and continuously happening in my life from the day I was born up to this very moment makes me get through any life difficulties.

My life journey isn’t perfect but it’s perfectly fine.

As the old saying goes… “Nothing/ nobody is perfect.”

Yet I can proudly say at the end of the day that I’ve lived my life the way I wanted. This is my life, my choices, my mistakes, my

moments with inspirational figures in our Podcasts J.O.B. WELL DONE.

lessons and it’s all worth it.

Follow us on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube at J.O.B. WELL DONE for sneak peeks. Save the date for our pilot episode on Feb 23, 2024, at 7 PM MT and 10 AM UTC. Join us on this exciting journey – it’s a job well done, indeed!

In the heart of Edmonton, they affectionately call me MAMU, a name that resonates with warmth and community spirit.

In 2006, an exciting opportunity unfolded as they were extended an invitation to visit Canada as tourists, accompanied by her sister.

Embarking on this journey was more than a passion; it was destiny intertwining our paths. Our journey of hosting events and gatherings in Edmonton and beyond began in 2010, alongside Bhelle. Jonathan joined us in 2011, bringing a decade of expertise to the table. When I urged Jonathan to explore new avenues, little did we know it would lead us to the world of podcasts and talk shows. This is Jonathan’s idea to do the podcasts. This venture traces its roots back to my involvement in the Philippine show business since 2006, where I played a behindthe-scenes role. At South Border Productions, we orchestrate the magic behind the scenes, steering the careers of luminaries such as the South Border Band, the captivating Cindy Kurleto, the powerhouse Arnel Pineda, the maestro Mike Luis, and Noah Sindac – just to sprinkle a few stars into our constellation of talent management.

Seizing the chance, I embraced the role of a host, drawing on my entertainment background. From being a mainstay behind the scenes to taking center stage, I plan to navigate the world of interviews, engaging with a diverse range of individuals – from the unsung heroes to the wildly successful, and even sharing

Picture this: a journey rooted in the OFW life, just like us, kickstarted by the shared experience of being Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs). Our tales transcend borders – not just in Canada but spanning the globe. We aim to debunk the myth that Canada is a scam, shedding light on the realities through authentic conversations with the right people. Our spotlight is currently on the vibrant stories of TFWs worldwide, with a pledge to address issues faced by our fellow Filipinos, be it in Canada or any corner of the world. Beyond that, we’ll unravel success stories of students and individuals, extending a helping hand to those grappling with challenges.

Why tune in to us? Here are three compelling reasons:

● Authenticity reigns – our stories are based on real experiences, no fabrication.

● We bring in diverse guests offering advice and guidance from various walks of life.

● Delving into the entrepreneurial world, mental health struggles, and life’s hardships – because not every story concludes with a fairy-tale ending.

As a Shipping Manager by day, my alter ego craves the thrill of managing talents and artists. It’s a journey I embarked on in my youth, and as they say, artists may come and go, but a manager remains eternal. Life’s ultimate lesson: Losing money might sting, but it’s nothing compared to losing your health. Yet, when your character takes a hit, that’s when you truly lose everything.

Mark your calendars! We extend a special invitation to all our listeners – join us for a riveting podcast on Facebook Live, happening on February 23 at 7 PM MT (Mountain Time) or 10:00 AM Philippine UTC time. Catch the replay on YouTube. This is more than just a podcast; it’s a platform amplifying the voices of TFWs and Filipinos abroad, a space where stories

unfold, and connections thrive. Feel free to call me Minchin, the energetic force in our dynamic trio.

Embark on a captivating journey with our podcast, sparked by the desire to carve a unique space for meaningful conversations in the vast world of podcasts. A must-watch with different guests each time. b. A one-of-a-kind show with life lessons, laughter, and a wealth of information in every topic. c. We guarantee you won’t get bored during our shows.

If I weren’t busy with my role as a Fabrication Lead-hand, I’d probably be a teacher. However, fate led me to the exciting world of podcasting, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Edmonton Philippine International Centre’s Momentum in Building the Community’s Home

GENERAL POINT OF VIEW

gqgeneral@gmail.com

Giselle General came from the cold, mountainous region of the Benguet province, and immigrated to Canada as a teenager in 2007. She completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta, and has a career in the nonprofit sector. She works at the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, which provides free legal help to low-income Edmontonians. She channels her creativity by writing in her personal blog, FilipinaYEG, and self-published a book called The Humanity of Me, and is active in numerous volunteer-based initiatives.

Last Sunday February 4, 2024, members and supporters of the Edmonton Philippine International Centre attended the Annual General Meeting for the organization. This event served as an opportunity to have a recap of the past 12 months of progress and activities, shared ideas, and elect the new board of directors.

I attended the event wearing two complimentary but different roles. First, as a member of EPIC, eager to celebrate the past 12 months and see fellow Filipinos in Edmonton who are invested in the momentum of the organization. Second, as a record-keeper and historian of sorts, as I received funding from the TELUS STORYHIVE program to work on my very first documentary, the subject being the Edmonton Philippine International Centre and how its story unfolds.

The ethereal and romantic decorations from yesterday’s event adorned the hall. Gigi Bygrave of Gigi Decor hosted a bridal showcase and the main hall displayed various products and businesses someone might need to have at their wedding.

The recap of the past year began with the most significant news that came in February 2023, the opportunity of having a physical space, the former Celtic Hall, available for lease. The EPIC board took a leap of faith and agreed to rent the building and tapped into the community to help with cleanup and renovations through Bayanihan events.

A remarkable list of programs, activities and events took place in the Edmonton Philippine International Centre, hosting concerts, musical performances, art workshops, markets, and many more.

Members diligently asked questions and shared ideas of how the organization can take even more meaningful action in the upcoming year. The EPIC board

emphasized the importance of supporting each other and providing complimentary activities and services to Filipinos in Edmonton.

Everyone is encouraged to ask the dozens of Filipino organizations in Edmonton to partner or host their activities in the hall.

Finally, the election of the board of directors was called. Ten eager and community-minded individuals submitted their names forward for the seven positions. After the ballots were tallied, the new board members were announced, and they immediately voted for the officers:

• Harlijk Mirasol - President

• Lito Velasco - Vice-President, External

• Virginia Sumalinog - Vice-President, Internal

• Oliver Rabara - Secretary

• Maria Cecilia Macalintal - Treasurer

• Ariane Latade - Auditor

• Rei Magtarayo - Business Manager

“This is our house. We have to take care of this house. And when someone needs our support, we need to focus on service.” These compelling words were captured by my film crew member as we documented the conversations, the energy, and the optimism for the year ahead.

The founding board members and most especially, the now past-president Ida Beltran-Lucila worked

tremendously hard over the last several years since the inception of this idea through a column here at the Alberta Filipino Journal. For this, I express my deep gratitude towards them.

Now it is the turn of the 80,000-strong Filipinos in Edmonton to continue the momentum of the Edmonton Philippine International Centre and its potential legacy for this incredible city and for future generations.

CELEBRATIONS OF LIFE: Moving Forward

Birthdays are everyone’s most cherished moment as this is when we celebrate the covenant between life and its Giver. Nobody is born alone. There are two causes of life that we have to acknowledge, appreciate, and recognize. The first is the Ultimate Cause or Giver, our God and the second are the proximate causes, our parents. Now, He who doesn’t acknowledge, appreciate, and recognize his or her life is also rejecting its Causes. Lucky are these individuals who truly celebrate life with significant people around them. May you all continue to share the gift of life with others. Active co-existence follows essence.

Bottomless Happiness for Benjie Lindo’s Birthday Madness

Edmonton, February 3, 2024Friends and visitors from almost all over Alberta came to celebrate with Benjie Lindo, a well-known endorser-influencer through his Benjie Lindo Live podcast.

After more than 35 years of serviciability with Alberta Health Services, Bong Aseron remains energetic. He is now retired but not tired. He did not only serve the department where he worked but an inspiration to his co-workers, as his enthusiasm has been so contagious and influential. Supervisor John Sigaya had been so emotional in his parting words for Bong as he had known the retiree since his childhood years.

Joined by her daughter, Lovelee and the “Forever Young” circle of friends, Malet Bulan’s heart was rejuvenated and filled with joy during her birthday celebration last January 20, 2024.

On Saturday, February 10, family and friends of Junie and Beaulah Uy gathered at Four Points Edmonton Gateway to celebrate the couple’s upcoming parenthood, as well as find out if the bundle of joy will be a boy or girl.

Guests enjoyed games, a raffle, and a fantastic buffet prepared by Food-D’Licious Filipino Cuisine, but the excitement over the impending reveal was palpable.

Finally, Junie and Beaulah joined together to draw a line of pink and blue cards from the cake, which eventually revealed a solid blue: It’s a BOY! The room erupted in a shower of blue confetti and cheering from the crowd.

Nobody is more excited than Junie and Beaulah, who commented, “We felt like we just won the greatest prize on Earth since we both hoped for a boy, but at the end of the day we’re just happy to be a family.”

Congratulations to you both from AFJ, and we wish you and your growing family all the best!
