AL DÍA’s 2020 Hispanic Heritage Awards ceremony was a historic event in the elevation of Latino leaders, not only in Philadelphia and during Hispanic Heritage Month but across the country no matter the time of year.

But such historic elevation and support for this year’s honorees would not have been possible without the embrace of so many other leaders — 19 to be exact — from across the Philadelphia region.

They made up the event’s advisory board and were led by co-chairs Michael Innocenzo, president and CEO of PECO, and Judge Nelson Diaz.

Innocenzo offered remarks on behalf of the board as part of the ceremony.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize and honor the many contributions of Hispanics and Latinos to the country and our culture,” he said.

About the honorees, Innocenzo commended all five, Carolina Cabrera DiGiorgio, Dr. Jack Ludmir, Dr. Evelyn Nuñez, Lou Rodriguez, and Rep. Danilo Burgos for their achievements in their fields.

“They are truly the archetypes of our history,” he said.

Innocenzo also touched upon current events that drive home the importance of celebrating a ceremony like AL DÍA’s Hispanic Heritage Awards at this time.

La ceremonia de los Premios de la Herencia Hispana 2020 de AL DÍA fue un evento histórico en la elevación de los líderes latinos, no sólo en Filadelfia y durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, sino en todo el país sin importar la época del año.

Pero tal elevación histórica y el apoyo a los homenajeados de este año no hubiera sido posible sin el abrazo de tantos otros líderes - 19 para ser exactos - de toda la región de Filadelfia.

Ellos formaron la junta asesora del evento y fueron dirigidos por los copresidentes Michael Innocenzo, presidente y CEO de PECO, y el juez Nelson Díaz.

Innocenzo ofreció comentarios en nombre de la junta como parte de la ceremonia.

“El Mes de la Herencia Hispana es un momento para reconocer y honrar las muchas contribuciones de los hispanos y latinos al país y a nuestra cultura”, dijo.

Inocencio también se refirió a los acontecimientos actuales que hacen evidente la importancia de celebrar una ceremonia como la de los Premios de la Herencia Hispana de AL DÍA en este momento.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize and honor the many contributions of Hispanics and Latinos to the country and our culture.”

He said this month and awards took place in a moment, “unlike any other.”

“[With] COVID-19 pandemic as a backdrop, recent events have sparked a renewed call for reform, racial justice, and equity,” said Innocenzo.

Much like the awards he co-chaired, Innocenzo also put Latinos at the heart of addressing today’s issues that currently plague and divide U.S. society.

“You are advancing the conversation around race, equity, immigration reform, and rights. You are rallying our community to vote,” he said.

And unlike in previous years, where Latinos have been forgotten from the nation’s most important conversations, Innocenzo and AL DÍA’s Hispanic Heritage Awards give them a seat at the table.

“You are not alone,” said Innocenzo.

“El Mes de la Herencia Hispana es un momento para reconocer y honrar las muchas contribuciones de los hispanos y latinos al país y a nuestra cultura”.

Dijo que este mes y los premios tuvieron lugar en un momento, "como ningún otro".

“Con la pandemia de COVID-19 como telón de fondo, los eventos recientes han provocado un renovado llamado a la reforma, la justicia racial y la equidad”, dijo Innocenzo.

Al igual que los premios que copresidió, Innocenzo también puso a los latinos en el centro de la atención de los problemas actuales que actualmente asolan y dividen a la sociedad estadounidense.

“Ustedes están avanzando en la conversación sobre la raza, la equidad, la reforma de la inmigración y los derechos. Están reuniendo a nuestra comunidad para votar”, dijo.

Y a diferencia de años anteriores, donde los latinos han sido olvidados de las conversaciones más importantes de la nación, los Premios de la Herencia Hispana de Innocenzo y AL DÍA les dan un asiento en la mesa.

“No estás solo”, dijo Innocenzo.
