uiara Alegría Hudes traveled 40 years back on her memories to get inspired and write her book My Broken Language, published in April of 2021.

The book has been a Buzz Pick in Good Morning America and was selected for the Andrew Carnegie Medal which awards excellence in adult fiction and nonfiction for adults. She started this path 30 years ago in a family party. Reliving that moment was inspiring for her, to which she added other events that left an impression on her life.

The child of a Jewish dad and Puertorrican mom tells how one day they decided to change homes, from West Philadelphia to a farmhouse in Malvern. A drastic change that showed the differences between a very Puertorrican area and a very white one.

The impact was even greater when her parents got divorced. Her mother goes back to Philadelphia and her dad stays in Malvern. For her being biracial or bicultural was not out of the ordinary until it happened.

My Broken Language was released in April 6 2021 in hardcover and again last Jan. 11 in paperback. The book will be in One Book, One Philadelphia 2022, which will take place between April 27 and June 15.

Talking about books, this issue also includes an article about book banning in school districts in the United States. According to the American Library Association of the United States, in the first weeks of this year at least 230 books have been banned.

Who is banning these books? Which state has the highest numbers?

In the Culture section, an article about the The Dream House by Cuban American writer Carmen Maria Machado. The author says “I kinda hate the book.” “It is like an archive of my pain,” she says.

os recuerdos de Quiara Alegría Hudes viajaron cuarenta años atrás para inspirarse y escribir sus memorias en My Broken Language, publicadas en abril del 2021.

El libro ha sido Buzz Pick en Good Morning America y fue seleccionado para la medalla Andrew Carnegie, que premia la excelencia en libros de ficción y no ficción para adultos. Pero ese camino empezó hace 30 años en una fiesta familiar. Remontarse a esa ocasión resultó inspirador, a lo que le agregó hechos que le marcaron su vida.

De papá judío y mamá puertorriqueña, cuenta que un día decidieron cambiar de vivienda, de West Philadelphia a una granja en Malvern. Un cambio drástico que mostró las diferencias entre un sector muy puertorriqueño y otro muy blanco.

Pero fue marcadamente impactante cuando sus padres se separan. Su mamá regresa a Filadelfia y su papá permanece en Malvern. Para ella no era habitual ser biracial, ni bicultural, pero en esas condiciones sí.

My Broken Language se lanzó el 6 de abril de 2021 y tuvo un relanzamiento el pasado 11 de enero aprovechando la impresión en tapa blanda. Para en su versión de tapa dura. Y estará en ‘One Book, One Philadelphia 2022’, que se realizará entre el 27 de abril y el 15 de junio.

A propósito de libros, esta edición también incluye un artículo sobre la prohibición de libros en distritos escolares de Estados Unidos. De acuerdo con cifras de la Asociación de Bibliotecas de Estados Unidos, en las primeras semanas de este año han sido vetadas al menos 230 obras. ¿Quiénes vetan? ¿Cuál es el estado con las mayores cifras?

n TikTok, Denise Mercedes and Maria Castellanos often post videos of themselves wearing the same outfit to show it on two different body types – Mercedes is a size 14, and Castellanos is a size 2. The friends started posting these videos in 2020 and currently have almost 4 million followers between their two accounts.

By posting these videos, they hope to help people be confident with their bodies and wear what they want. Their success on social media has led the pair to work with many size-inclusive brands through a new initiative, #stylenotsize.

Castellanos empathized that the point of #stylenotsize is having confidence. She said during an interview with AL DÍA, “I just remember seeing Denise looking incredible in her bikini. Like I looked at her and she was so confident.

She didn’t really care about other people’s opinions. That did it for me. I was like, ‘If she can do it, so can I.’”

Mercedes, a New Jersey native, got her start in the fashion world seven years ago by posting photos of her outfits to social media. She created the hashtag #becauseitsmybody after being told that she motivated people to wear what they wanted instead of what they were told to wear based on their size.

As her platform grew, she started to work with brands like Rebdolls, created by fellow Dominican, Grisel Paula. Mercedes has created a swimsuit and a fall collection for them, both of which sold out in under a week.

The two met back in 2018 at a bar through their partners. Their conversation led to Castellanos becoming Mercedes’ photographer.

THE NEED FOR MORE SIZE INCLUSIVITY

Overall, both Castellanos and Mercedes believe that the fashion industry is becoming more size-inclusive. Castellanos mentioned that in the past it was harder for them to find matching pieces.

They also believe that social media played a major part in the body positive movement and getting brands to extend their sizes because it allowed consumers to talk to the brands directly.

One way that brands can continue to improve in Mercedes’ eyes is to extend their sizing even more. Castellanos believes that brands need to focus not just on size, but also on the fabrics being used and how the garment is being cut.

In the future, they want to continue to work with brands that are size-inclusive and brands that currently aren’t to try and encourage them to extend their sizing.

They also want to use their large platform to amplify the voices of smaller creators.

También creen que las redes sociales jugaron un papel importante en el mo-

vimiento Body Positive y para que las marcas ampliaran su rango de tallas. Se permitió que la voz de los consumidores llegara a las marcas directamente.

Una manera en que las marcas pueden seguir mejorando es, según Mercedes, ampliando más la variedad en sus tallas.

Para Castellanos, las marcas necesitan enfocarse no solo en las tallas, sino también en las telas y en el corte de las prendas.

En el futuro, quieren seguir trabajando con marcas que sean inclusivas con las tallas y con las que no lo son, para intentar motivarlas a ampliar sus rangos. Además, quieren usar su plataforma para ampliar las voces de pequeños creadores.

n the case of the Biden administration’s immigration effort, it’s a lot of ‘one step forward, two steps back.’ The latest example of this phenomenon to promise a lot and then take away came in the span of a week.

On Sunday, Feb. 2, the Biden administration announced that it would support permanent legal status in the U.S. for the families reunified by his Reunification Task Force under the leadership of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

A TIMELY ANNOUNCEMENT

The date of the announcement was important. Exactly one year earlier was when the task force was announced by the new administration.

Its job was to right arguably the most egregious wrong committed by the previous Trump administration in

ENGLISH separating immigrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border under a zero tolerance policy.

What the Biden administration inherited was a system that was inhumane and very poorly organized to the point that lawyers couldn’t locate at least 628 parents that were separated from their kids. In total, around 5,500 kids were separated.

It’s been a tall task to correct and one that’s still far from finished. According to the current administration, at least 1,200 families still remain separated. In its first year of operation, the task force has reunited around 130 families and there are 400 more it said are still in the process of being reunited.

To announce its support for permanent legal status for those separated is seen as a big deal, but like most things Biden has done around immigration up to this point (other than the reunification task force), it’s just words.

For the change to actually happen, Congress would have to pass a statutory change, and with it not being able to even pass a major piece of legislation that’s part of Biden’s agenda in the Build Back Better Act, things don’t look great.

The other immigration bill proposed by Biden also hasn’t moved at all in a year.

Mayorkas announced on behalf of the administration that it would advocate to Congress for the statutory change to happen, but again, those are just words.

BERKS COUNTY DETENTION REOPENS

To add to the bleak outlook on the

local front, a little more than a week after the announcement of support for permanent legal status, the Berks County Detention Center was reopened in Pennsylvania to house immigrant women.

The county’s commissioners struck a secret deal last year with ICE to shift the center’s focus from housing immigrant children to women. A public vote was also held by the commissioners, confirming its continued status as a facility to house migrants.

Shut Down Berks, the longtime organization demanding the facility’s closure, said that at least 65 women 18 and up are being housed there at the moment. The organization also called out the facility’s history of abuse of women, pointing to a 2014 case of a 19-yearold mother being raped by a staff member who was eventually convicted.

“Detaining women at this facility is dangerous and cruel,” announced the organization.

Shut Down Berks has also joined residents of Berks County and Make the Road PA in legally challenging the deal struck by the county commissioner with ICE to keep the facility running. The suit alleges that the plans were deliberately kept secret from the public. A court most recently ruled that the challenge could move forward.

But whether or not the challenge succeeds, the Berks saga and its continued use is indicative of a wider strategy to return to the status quo of immigration in the U.S. The only problem is that it also didn’t work before.

EL CENTRO DE DETENCIÓN DEL CONDADO DE BERKS REABRE

trend that has been sweeping the U.S. since the start of 2022 is the banning of books in school districts.

It’s not necessarily a new thing. Socalled “controversial” books have always had the ire of administrators and parents alike for their content — whether it be the bad language and more used and experienced by the morally ambiguous Holden Caufield in Catcher in the Rye or the sex and communism in 1984.

The former by J.D. Salinger was once the most censored book in U.S. schools between 1961 and 1982. It’s central theme?

Being an angsty teenager trying to navigate late adolescence and all the pressures associated with it.

Salinger was a white male author, writing about a white male protagonist.

These days, the books being more and more targeted with bans are works from Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous and LGBTQ+ writers, featuring plots that surround characters from the same backgrounds.

Those challenges have been brought increasingly by conservative parents and implemented by conservative-leaning school boards.

El título de J.D. Salinger fue alguna vez el libro más censurado en las escuelas de Estados Unidos entre 1961 y 1982. ¿Su tema central? La vida de un adolescente angustiado tratando de navegar por la última etapa de la adolescencia y todas las presiones asociadas con ella.

Salinger fue un escritor blanco que escribió sobre un protagonista blanco. Estos días, los libros que son el blanco del veto son trabajos de autoría negra, latina, indígena, y LGBTQ+, con tramas donde los personajes comparten su misma identidad.

In its editorial of Feb. 13, the Spanish newspaper notes “Joe Biden’s determined support to unions and collective bargaining,” and calls it a “revolutionary step in favor of workers’ rights in a country like the United States.” It even points out that it characterizes this president. “It is an authentic transformation of the American labor market. His drive towards unionism in a country historically reluctant to it is an identity trait of the Democrat president.” It acknowledges Biden´s purpose to “have the State be a model on relationships with workers,” in a moment in which “protests are growing against extended hours, low salaries, disincentives in pensions or work instability. At the same time, millions of employees are resigning to their jobs every month because they consider they are not well compensated for them, —whether it be salary, hours or professional or personal fulfillment—.”

Ruben Maximiano is an expert in competition at OCDE (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), and in his column of Feb. 13, he celebrates “the recent decision of President Joe Biden of confronting the rooted oligopoly in the meat packing industry of the United States” and calls it a bold decision to face monopolies. “The message of his administration is clear: market capitalism works correctly only when there is healthy competition,” he says.

He also compares Biden with Theodore Roosevelt, whose economic agenda “is remembered for his then novel act on competition in the first decade of the 20th century.” Biden’s government announced a few days ago that “it would spend 1,000 million dollars in post-pandemic recovery funds to foster competition in the meat packing sector in the United States; an industry which, according to the White House is controlled by four companies that control 85% of all meat processing and 70% of the pork meat market.” The important thing is that it is happening in a moment where “there is a rapid increase in general inflation in the United States, and it aims are attracting new actors in the meat processing chain hoping that tougher competition helps control the increase in prices.”

This could take a life of its own and a calculation error could trigger a horrific confrontation,” he averts. “There are plenty of reasons to be pessimistic and even more to be alarmed. Not only are bravery, strength, skills, solidarity, capacity of action and resistance of Ukrainians being tested; also the rest of democratic world’s,” he concludes.

hen thinking back on what made her want to write her memoir, My Broken Language, published in April 2021, Quiara Alegría Hudes told AL DÍA that it goes back to a Fourth of July party her family threw in 1991.

That year, Juan Luis Guerra’s Bachata Rosa was all over the radio and the family celebration in North Philly was no different with its soundtrack.

However, instead of tearing it up on the dance floor alongside her family, Hudes found herself a comfortable spot on the stairs and watched the emotion flow from the women that defined her life.

It had been an admittedly tough year for the whole family. One cousin, Flor, was absent from the celebration, suffering from the demons of her growing drug addiction. It’s something that would later afflict others in Hudes’ circle of powerful women, but the focus on July 4, 1991 was only one of them.

“That Fourth of July we could all feel the dawning precarity,” wrote Hudes in My Broken Language.

As she ate rice and beans on the steps, she could tell how much Flor’s absence was affecting the others as they cut it up on the dance floor.

“I knew shit was goin’ down by how hard Nuchi, Cuca, and Mary Lou danced that day. Like if their hips slowed a bit, Flor’s absence would be all we had left,” Hudes wrote.

PAIN, POWER AND PERSEVERANCE

It is that visceral memory that Hudes told AL DÍA was at the center of her motivation to write My Broken Language. It tells not only her own story of self dis-

covery, but also the stories of the women that helped her get there.

“It was so alive,” said Hudes of watching from the stairs on that hot Fourth of July, “and as the youngest cousin I was quite in awe of my older cousins.”

There was joy in their movement, but it was also an expression of the strength and perseverance of their being amid the daunting situation hanging over them. The latter realization was something Hudes said she only came to after 40 years of reflection.

“There was some resilience and wisdom kind of baked into our body language and how we created loving spaces with our bodies,” she said.

ONE BOOK, ONE PHILADELPHIA

My Broken Language, first released in hardcover on April 6, 2021 and recently in paperback on Jan. 11, 2022, is a story many readers across the U.S. have gotten familiar with over the last 10 months. It’s been named a Buzz Pick by Good Morning America and was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal, which awards excellence in adult fiction and nonfiction.

However in Philadelphia, where a majority of the book (and Hudes’ early life) takes place, those interested will be able to see the text on a whole new level thanks to it recently being named the 2022 One Book, One Philadelphia selection by the Free Library of Philadelphia.

The program, which is now in its 20th year, pulls apart a selection by its themes to create a number of events for members of the public to attend. The themes pulled from My Broken Language are numerous, and include migration, home, and belonging, heritages, activism, cultural preservation in Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican communities, Latinx re-

l recordar lo que le hizo escribir sus memorias, My Broken Language, publicado en abril del 2021, Quiara Alegría Hudes le contó a AL DÍA que todo pasó en una fiesta de 4 de julio que su familia organizó en 1991.

Ese año, la Bachata Rosa de Juan Luis Guerra estaba sonando en todas las estaciones de radio y en la celebración de la familia no faltó la canción. Pero en lugar de saltar a la pista de baile con su familia, Quiara se sentó en un sitio cómodo en las escaleras a ver cómo fluía la emoción en las mujeres que definieron su vida.

Había sido un año definitivamente duro para toda la familia. Una de sus primas, Flor, no estuvo presente en la celebración, pues sufría con los demonios de su creciente drogadicción. Un padecimiento que luego afligió a otras mujeres poderosas del círculo de Quiara, pero ese 4 de julio de 1991 solo era una de ellas.

Ese 4 de julio todos podíamos sentir cómo se levantaba la precariedad”, escribió en My Broken Language.

Mientras comía arroz y frijoles en las escaleras, se dio cuenta de lo mucho que la ausencia de Flor estaba afectando a los otros cuando dejaron de bailar.

“Yo sabía que las cosas estaban yendo de para abajo por la dificultad de Nuchi, Cuca y Mary Lou para bailar ese día.

Como si las caderas se les movieran un poco más lento. Lo único que nos quedaba de Flor era su ausencia”, escribió Quiara.

DOLOR, PODER Y PERSEVERANCIA

Ese sentimiento visceral, que ella le contó a AL DÍA, fue su motivación para escribir My Broken Language. No solo cuenta su historia de autodescubrimiento, sino también las de las mujeres que la ayudaron.

“Todo era tan animado”, dijo Quiara de lo que veía desde las escaleras ese 4 de julio “y cómo la prima más joven estaba sorprendida de mis primos mayores”.

Había alegría en sus movimientos, pero también era una expresión de la fortaleza y la perseverancia de su ser en medio de una situación desalentadora acechando en sus cabezas. Lo que vio fue algo que, según ella, solo concluyó después de 40 años de reflexión.

“Había resiliencia y sabiduría que ya venían metidas en nuestro lenguaje corporal y en cómo creábamos espacios de amor con nuestros cuerpos”, dijo.

UN LIBRO, UN FILADELFIA

My Broken Language, lanzada primero en tapa dura el 6 de abril de 2021 y más recientemente en tapa blanda el 11 de enero de 2022, es una historia con la que se han familiarizado muchos lectores en Estados Unidos en los últimos 10 meses.

El libro ha sido Buzz Pick en Good Morning America y fue seleccionado para recibir la medalla Andrew Carnegie, que premia la excelencia en libros de ficción y no ficción en la categoría adultos.

En Filadelfia, donde se desarrolla la mayor parte del libro (y la niñez de Quiara), aquellos interesados podrán ver el texto bajo una luz totalmente diferente gracias a que recientemente fue nombrado en la selección 2022 One Book, One Philadelphia por la Free Library of Philadelphia.

productive justice (shoutout to Hudes’ mom), Afro-Latinidad, Yoruba traditions, oral histories, the power of storytelling, gentrification, and connections with the natural world, to name more than a few. Specific event formats include panel discussions, selected readings, writing workshops, cooking programs, arts and crafts for children, and more.

One Book, One Philadelphia 2022 will run from April 27 to June 15.

STRADDLING TWO WORLDS

The book begins with a move, as Hudes’ parents traded their block in West Philadelphia for a farmhouse in Malvern, PA at the end of the Main Line. It was a move spurred by her Jewish father and supported by her Puerto Rican mom,

who complained of the cramped city life and longed for the country to replicate the nature she experienced back in Puerto Rico as a child.

For a young Quiara, it was the beginning of the reckoning between her two halves. That ramped up even more when her parents divorced, sending her mom to North Philadelphia with her extended family, and keeping her dad in Malvern.

“Being biracial and bicultural didn’t strike me as anything out of the ordinary until my parents separated,” said Hudes.

She went on to speak about the “whiplash” she felt going from the very Boricua North Philadelphia to the very white Malvern to visit her dad, and riding SEPTA’s R5 as the symbolic go-between.

“We call it codeswitching now, and I was doing that constantly as a kid,” said Hudes. “Because it was so baked into my

everyday life, it’s even hard for me to think of it as switching.”

The train ride was another crash course in not only the different worlds she embodied, but also about society in general. It’s been a while since she’s made the trip from 30th Street Station to Malvern via train, but Hudes remembers the stark difference between the graffiti and tire piles surrounding the train at Overbrook, and the pristine lawns that started at Merion and ran for the rest of the line.

It was disturbing for her to see, but also because it laid bare her own experience.

“There’s this phrase ‘how the other half lives,’” said Hudes. “And you see how the other half lives, except for that was me constantly… the other half was me too.”

What I saw was multiple pathways for women to be.

However, it was eventually in North Philadelphia where ‘Qui Qui’ (a cousin-bestowed nickname) found her home base. There, she discovered the then-isolated world that was Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican community, where her mother worked to bridge the gap in healthcare, among other issues.

In looking back, Hudes discovered that it was her mom’s generation that built the community in Philly. Their work, she realized, is what allowed her to explore other options career-wise.

“They had no choice,” said Hudes.

“They paved the way for me to be able to say: ‘Ok, I have the time now to tell the story of what you did.’”

FINDING EVERYONE’S BROKEN LANGUAGE

It’s one of the main reasons she decided to call the book, My Broken Language. In addition to it being a time of ‘breaking’ with things like breakdancing and broken-window policing, breaking language is what her mother and other women in her life did. They had to communicate to be known and demand respect, and discovered their own way in the cobbled creative process between Spanish and English.

“What I saw was multiple pathways for women to be. For women to suffer, but reach out a hand when they need help.

For women to caretake each other and receive that care,” said Hudes. “They all did it in their own way, and in some ways what they modeled for me was: ‘You are not to follow anyone’s path, but your own. Follow your own heart.’”

And that’s never been at the expense of the community, but in tandem with it.

Given that experience and reflection, it’s not hard to see why Hudes is arguably one of the most important voices in theater and film not just from her hometown of Philly, but across the country and world.

With her broken language she’s inspired millions, and as that of her family joins the discussion in her new book, millions more await.

El libro empieza con una mudanza, cuando los padres de Quiara cambiaron su cuadra en West Philadelphia por una granja en Malvern, Filadelfia, al final de la vía del tren. Fue un cambio impulsado por su padre judío y apoyado por su madre puertorriqueña, que se quejaba de la vida constreñida de la ciudad y añoraba replicar la experiencia con la naturaleza que vivió en Puerto Rico en su niñez.

Lo que la joven Quiara empezaba a reconocer como sus dos mitades se intensificó cuando sus padres se divorciaron, lo que envió a su mamá al norte de Filadelfia con su familia y dejó a su papá viviendo en Malvern. “Ser biracial y bicultural no era algo fuera de lo ordinario para mí hasta que mis padres se separaron”, dijo.

Continuó hablando del “latigazo” que sintió luego de salir del muy boricua norte de Filadelfia para llegar al muy blanco Malvern para visitar a su padre, y de subir al R5 de SEPTA, que era el simbólico intermediario.

“Ahora se le llama cambio de código y yo lo hacía todo el tiempo de niña”, manifestó Quiara. “Era algo tan normal en mi vida cotidiana que me cuesta pensar que eso era”.

El recorrido en el tren fue otro curso intensivo, no solo entre los dos mundos que ella encarnaba, sino también acerca de la sociedad en general. Ya ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que hizo el viaje desde 30th Street Station hasta Malvern en tren, pero recuerda la marcada diferencia entre los grafitis y pilas de neumáticos que rodeaban el tren en Overbrook y el césped perfecto de Merion que iba hasta el resto de la vía.

Era inquietante de ver, además porque era una visión cruda de su propia experiencia.

“Existe la frase: ‘como vive la otra mitad’ -dijo-. Y uno ve cómo vive la otra mi-

tad, solo que eso era yo constantemente… yo también era la otra mitad”.

SOBRE SUS HOMBROS

Fue en el norte de Filadelfia donde finalmente ‘Qui Qui’ (un apodo de sus primas) encontró su hogar. Allí descubrió el mundo en ese momento aislado que era la comunidad puertorriqueña de Filadelfia, donde su madre trabajaba para compensar las diferencias en el servicio de salud, entre otras cosas.

Al mirar atrás descubrió que fue la generación de su madre la que construyó la comunidad en Filadelfia. Se dio cuenta de que su trabajo es lo que le permitió explorar otras opciones profesionales.

“No tuvieron opción”, contó Quiara.

“Pero ellas abrieron el camino para que yo pudiera decir: ‘Bueno, ya tengo el tiempo para escribir la historia de lo que ustedes hicieron’”.

ENCONTRAR EL LENGUAJE DE CADA CUAL

Es una de las razones por las que decidió llamar el libro My Broken Language. Además de haber sido un momento de ‘rupturas’ como en el breakdancing y la filosofía policial de “ventanas rotas”, romper con el lenguaje fue lo que su madre y otras mujeres de su vida hicieron. Tenían que comunicarse para ser conocidas y exigir respeto, y descubrieron su camino en el proceso creativo con fragmentos del español y del inglés.

“Lo que vi fueron los múltiples caminos de las mujeres para llegar a ser. Múltiples maneras de sufrir de las mujeres, pero también de levantar la mano cuando necesitaban ayuda, de cuidar a otras y ser cuidadas”, explicó Quiara. “Todas lo hicieron a su manera, y lo que me enseñaron con su ejemplo fue: ‘no debes seguir el camino de otros, sino el propio. Sigue a tu corazón’”.

Eso nunca ha sido a costa de la comunidad, sino en conjunto con ella. Con su experiencia y sus reflexiones, no es difícil ver que Quiara es probablemente una de las voces más importantes en el teatro y el cine, no solo en su ciudad, Filadelfia, sino en todo el país y el mundo.

Ha inspirado a millones con su libro y mientras sus familiares se unen a las opiniones sobre él, millones más esperan.

n a competition full of controversy, the Spanish-Cuban singer Chanel Terrero won against all odds at the Benidorm Fest, and became Spain’s next rep for Eurovision 2022.

The 66th edition of the popular contest will be held between May 10 and May 14 in Turin, Italy.

The singer, who won over the jury with her song, “SloMo,” was not among the initial front-runners. Tanxugueiras and Rigoberta Bandini, who finished second and third, seemed to have more of a chance at winning. Rayden, Varry Brava, Xeinn, Gonzalo Hermida — who was unable to participate after testing positive for COVID-19 — and Blanca Paloma were also finalists.

Chanel put on a surprising show in the semi-final on Wednesday, Jan. 26, which served as a prelude to her ultimate victory in the final on Sunday, Jan. 31.

AN ACTRESS AND DANCER

Besides being a singer, Chanel is also an actress and dancer. She left her native Cuba at the age of three with her mother, who immigrated to Spain for love. Terrero built her career in popular musicals like Nine and The Lion King.

“I come from another world,” she said regarding her past in musical theater. After learning she was the winner, Terrero promised to “give the best show at Eurovision and win the contest.”

With daring and sensual choreography, the singer was the winner via a voting system that was divided 50-50 between a jury and popular vote. Overall, Chanel received 96 votes. Bandini received 81, and the Tanxugueiras trio got 90.

“Europe smells like Chanel.There is nothing about this challenge that makes me feel afraid,” Terrero said.

Because of the pandemic, the gala was limited to a capacity of 1,300, occupied mostly by the organizers, applicants and the press.

La autora, que cautivó al jurado con su canción “SloMo” no figuraba entre las favoritas. Forjó su carrera en populares musicales como Nine o El rey León. “Vengo prácticamente de otro mundo” contó respecto a su pasado en el teatro musical. Y tras proclamarse vencedora, prometió “dar el show en Eurovisión para quedar primeros”.

Con una coreografía atrevida y sensual, la cantante resultó ganadora en un sistema de votación que se repartió al 50% entre un jurado profesional y el voto popular. En conjunto, Chanel obtuvo 96 votos, frente a los 91 de Bandini y los 90 del trío Tanxugueiras. “Europa huele a Chanel.

armen Maria Machado has been on tour for more than three years with her latest book, The Dream House (published in 2018). Between the book launch, a pause thanks to the pandemic, and now an international tour for its Spanish version, it has been a long and painful tour.

The Dream House is a memoir where the Cuban American writer narrates the abuse she was subjected to by her ex-partner.

“There’s no easy way to say it. It always sounds weird. I kinda hate the book.

It was really difficult to write, it is like an archive of my pain which is strange and sad,” Machado told AL DÍA during an interview from Cartagena.

When talking about domestic violence, the stereotype is an abusive man and a female victim. But talking about it, writing about it, in first person, in a queer relationship makes Machado’s book a breaker of two taboos. Taboos that

ENGLISH Machado used to make a book to be read in short fragments that sometimes looks like a script for a theater play. They’re random memories of a woman’s life, who’s had to deal with discovering her identity as a “queer girl.”

In the book, the reader goes along the fragments, getting closer to the protagonist, creating a relationship of love, admiration, obsession, and seduction. It all operates in the background during day-to-day moments that turn into pain with one sentence, gesture, or look from her girlfriend. It’s exactly the way abuse works.

Carmen started to write her story as a cathartic exercise almost 10 years ago, and during the process found that the short chapters would help her story.

“Everything I was writing was terrible and I hated it and I was like this is very boring,” she said. But in that construction, “everything made sense, those pieces were necessary for the picture to exist.”

‘The Dream House’ es el libro de memorias de la escritora cubano americana en el que narra el abuso del que fue víctima por parte de su expareja. “No hay una forma sencilla de decirlo. Esto siempre suena raro. De algún modo yo odio el libro. Fue muy difícil de escribir, es como un archivo de mi dolor que es extraño y triste”, dice Machado durante una entrevista con AL DÍA desde Cartagena de Indias, en el Caribe colombiano.

Cuando se habla de abuso doméstico, el estereotipo es el hombre maltratador contra la mujer víctima. Pero hablar del tema, escribir de esto, en primera persona, desde una relación queer hace que el libro de Machado rompa con un tabú doble. Un

tabú del que ella logró hacer una obra que se lee en cortos fragmentos, que a veces parece el guión de una obra de teatro, recuerdos sueltos de la vida de una mujer que se ha tenido que enfrentar a descubrir su identidad como una “niña rara”.

En medio de esta construcción, el lector se acerca a la protagonista, se va entretejiendo una relación de amor/ admiración/ obsesión/ seducción, todo como telón de fondo de momentos cotidianos que pasan de la normalidad al dolor con una sola frase, con un solo gesto, con una mirada de su novia, tal como funciona el maltrato.

Carmen comenzó a escribir su historia como un ejercicio de catarsis hace casi diez años. En el proceso encontró que esta estructura de capítulos cortos ayudaría a su historia. “Todo lo que estaba escribiendo era horrible, lo odiaba. Me decía, es muy aburrido”, comenta. Pero en esa construcción por partes “todo empezó a tener sentido, esas piezas eran necesarias para que el cuadro existiera”.

If there is something Machado knows it’s labels: woman, latina, lesbian, queer… Her writing and texts have also been pigeonholed into categories like women’s literature, queer literature.

For her, it all goes beyond that.

“I am a queer writer, I’m a woman you know, I write from my body, that is where my brain is, in my body, so like everything is coming through me and my identity,” she said.

“Art is art,” as a way to re-affirm that it does not matter how or where it comes from, but the expression that counts.

After this foray into nonfiction, Carmen is back in the process of writing her fiction stories — those that made her a finalist in the National Book Award in 2017 with Her Body and Other Parties.

In these short stories, women, relationships, eroticism and a gothic atmosphere so particular to her work are present. She still doesn’t know what the final outcome will be, but we, her readers, will be here to find out.

Si de algo sabe Machado es de etiquetas: mujer, latina, lesbiana, queer… su escritura y sus textos también han sido encasillados en estas categorías, como literatura femenina, literatura queer. Pero para ella todo va más allá. “Yo soy una escritora queer, soy mujer. Yo escribo desde mi cuerpo que es donde está mi cerebro. Así que todo sale a través de mi cuerpo y de mi identidad”, dice. Pero concluye que “igual el arte es arte”, como un modo de reafirmar que no importa de dónde, ni cómo venga, sino que lo que cuenta es la expresión.

Una vez más, Carmen María Machado está en el proceso de escribir. Luego de este ejercicio testimonial y de no ficción, vuelve a la ficción, a sus relatos, los que la hicieron finalista del National Book Award en 2017 con ‘Her Body and Other Parties’.

En estos cuentos sigue presente la mujer, las relaciones amorosas, el erotismo y ese aire gótico propio de su escritura. Aún no sabe muy bien qué saldrá al final del proceso, pero acá estamos sus lectores para descubrirlo.

The Festival, like Carmen’s book tour, was suspended due to the pandemic, and made an emotional comeback.

great part of flowers gifted for Saint Valentine’s come from Colombia, a country with enormous biodiversity. This product is prepared many months in advance as on this date about 15 per cent of the total in a year is exported.

In February, 650 million flowers are sent to the international market, of which 90% are sent to the U.S. In order to meet the requirements of the international market, it is necessary to create 20,000 additional jobs to the 150,000 regular ones, and 65 per cent of these jobs are done by women who are the head of their household.

Last year, according to Asocolflores (Colombian Asociation of Flower Exporters), 1.730 million flowers were sold to the United States, that is, 83% of total exports. Colombia has exported about 400 species of flowers and foliage, notably roses, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, carnations and sunflowers.

Along with the list, Krause also requested superintendents across the state to notify him if their districts possessed any of the books and how much money was used to supply them. What was to happen next was vague, but the request also alluded to previous efforts to ban books that center on things like transgender identity and critical race theory.

NBC News also recently identified 50 books that parents in school board meetings across the state have requested to be banned for things like sexual content, sexuality, and looking at the history of racism in the U.S. Locally, Pennridge Area School District in Pennsylvania has also banned a number of LGBTQ+ books from its schools, and in the most high-profile national case, a school district in Tennessee banned the longtime graphic novel classic, Maus, which depicts the Holocaust in all its gruesome reality.

A FALSE SENSE OF PROTECTION

It’s that gruesome reality that proponents of these bans say they are protect-

ing their children from. But as Dr. Marilisa Jiménez Garcia points out in a recent piece for the Atlantic, such an attitude assumes that children don’t encounter that reality living their everyday lives.

“The sanitization of history in the name of shielding children assumes, incorrectly, that today’s students are untouched by oppression, imprisonment, death, or racial and ethnic profiling,” she wrote.

That’s especially true when considering the experiences of Black, Latinx, Asian and LGBTQ+ youth, who “were not sheltered or spared from these horrors when they happened.”

These experiences, when laid out in book form, not only connect with students from the same backgrounds, but also breed better understanding among all students of the experiences of their classmates. The conversations that can be had as a result build bridges rather than the divisions adults some adults decry in this day and age.

They’re conversations the adults themselves don’t want to have with their children and by extension, other people different from themselves.

están protegiendo a sus hijos, pero como afirma la Dra. Marilisa Jiménez García, en una artículo reciente en the Atlantic, una actitud así da por hecho que los niños no se encuentran ya con estas realidades dentro de su vida cotidiana.

“El saneamiento de la historia en nombre de la protección de los niños asume, incorrectamente, que a los estudiantes de hoy no los afecta la opresión, el encarcelamiento, la muerte o las preconcepciones raciales o étnicas”, escribió. En especial al ver las experiencias de la juventud negra, latina y LGBTQ+, a quienes “no se protegió o se les evitó estos horrores cuando ocurrieron”.

Cuando estas experiencias se presentan en el formato de un libro, no solo conectan a estudiantes del mismo origen, también ayudan a cultivar un mejor entendimiento entre los estudiantes sobre las experiencia de los otros. Las conversaciones que siguen a esta práctica construyen puentes y no las divisiones que algunos adultos censuran en estas épocas.

Son conversaciones que los mismos adultos no quieren tener con sus hijos y, por extensión, con otras personas que sean diferentes a ellos.

In addition, Televisión Española announced that the lyrics of the winning song “SloMo” will be evaluated to assess whether it meets the standards set for the contest. The rule says at least 35% of the lyrics must be written in the language of the country (Spanish). After a first evaluation, it was found that only 33% of the

lyrics are written in Spanish. Most of the lyrics are in English. The mix of languages is present in almost every verse.

Because of the controversy, internal unions of the television channel demanded the result be declared null and void.

Critics also point to the strong interests of the record companies, wanting to create big candidates to later benefit from the rights of the winning song. That’s the case with record company BMG, promoter of Chanel. The other favorites had already released several albums and singles, Chanel’s song, “SloMo,” was her first release, and was enough to win the contest.

la letra está escrita en inglés. La mezcla de idiomas está presente casi en cada frase: “El mundo está loco con este body, si tengo un problema no es monetary”, canta al inicio de SloMo. Ante la polémica, sindicatos internos del canal televisivo exigen anular el resultado final.

Los críticos con la elección de la ganadora también apuntan a los fuertes intereses de las discográficas, interesadas en crear candidaturas potentes para después sacar beneficio de los derechos de la canción ganadora. Y así ocurrió con la compañía discográfica BMG, promotora de Chanel. Si bien las otras favoritas ya habían publicado varios discos y singles, la canción “SloMo” de Chanel fue su primera composición, que le bastó para ser vencedora.

pecialized studies about people’s lives only ratify the circumstances they are going through. A study published in December shows exactly that, and it is worth commenting on.

“The economic state of Latinos in America: The American dream deferred” is the title of a report by McKinsey & Company. It advises that Latinos could have a huge impact in the United States if they could overcome barriers that do not allow them to be fully involved in its economy.

It says that its labor force will make up 30% by 2060, a significant growth when taking into consideration that today it is 17,3%. Today the population of Latinos is close to 60 million people. That is, more than the population in Colombia, Peru and Venezuela together, or Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia and Cuba together.

The report, which sets forth their difficulties, also highlights their achievements in the last years. “Latinos start more businesses and have higher rates of intergenerational mobility, and their share of skilled and higher-paid occupations has increased in the past decade. As a population, they increasingly embody—in spirit and reality—the American dream that hard work pays off and each successive generation will be better off than the one before.”

It is worth noting from this last sentence that the economic gap is decreasing as more Latinos are born in the United States.

As for entrepreneurship, Latinos, more than any other group, start more businesses per capita. In five years, 0,5 per cent started a business while the percentage for Asians and Whites is 0,3. This scenario can be seen in 45 states, where there are many success stories of how they made their way through.

Many are on the other end: difficulties to access housing, credits and fair payment. Many of those who are not having a good time are also doing Jobs that nobody else wants to do.

The study also includes another aspect, the reason for leaving their native countries: improving the financial conditions of their families, who stayed home waiting for the god news. The report by McKinsey & Company claims that 32% sends money to their relatives and many more than half transfers about 30% of their income. They left for the United States, but their hearts stayed in their home countries.

These are the cold numbers of research that serve as reference to know if the American dream was worth the adventure. The truth is that many left their countries with a goal in mind, work to live and give their families a better future.

Many probably stayed trapped in Jobs that nobody wants to do without a hope to make progress. Trapped because that is better than going back home.

os estudios especializados sobre la vida de la gente lo que hacen es ratificar las circunstancias por las que están pasando. Eso es lo que se deduce de un estudio que se publicó en diciembre y que vale la pena comentar.

“La situación económica de los latinos en Estados Unidos: El sueño americano aplazado” es el título del informe elaborado por McKinsey & Company. Una de las recomendaciones que se hacen señala que los latinos tendrían un efecto supremo en Estados Unidos si se superan las barreras que no permiten que tengan una participación plena en su economía.

Incluso, advierte que su fuerza laboral para el 2060 estará por el 30%, un crecimiento significativo si se tiene en cuenta que hoy está en el 17,3%. Mal contados, hoy la población de latinos es cercana a 60 millones de personas. Es decir, más que la de Colombia, o la de Perú y Venezuela juntos, o la de Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia y Cuba juntos.

El informe, que plantea las dificultades, también destaca los logros de los últimos años. “Los latinos crean más empresas y tienen mayores tasas de movilidad intergeneracional, y su porcentaje de ocupaciones calificadas y mejor pagadas ha aumentado en la última década. Como población, encarnan cada vez más —en espíritu y en realidad— el sueño americano de que el trabajo duro da sus frutos y cada generación sucesiva estará mejor que la anterior”.

De esta última frase se destaca que la brecha económica se va reduciendo a medida que van naciendo más latinos en Estados Unidos.

En el plano del emprendimiento, el dato es que los latinos, más que otro grupo, crean más empresas per cápita. En cinco años, el 0,5 por ciento emprendió un negocio, mientras que la cifra para asiáticos y blanco es de 0,3. Ese panorama se aprecia en 45 estados. Ahí se encuentran historia de éxito y de cómo se abrieron camino.

En el otro externo está la situación de muchos. Por ejemplo, dificultad para acceder a vivienda, a créditos y a pagos dignos. O aquel detalle de quienes no la están pasando bien es que muchos hacen trabajos que nadie quiere hacer.

Otro aspecto tiene que ver con la razón para salir de su país de origen: mejorar las condiciones económicas de sus familias, que se quedaron en casa esperando buenas noticias. El informe de McKinsey & Company asegura que el 32% les envía dinero a sus familiares y mucho más de la mitad les transfiere algo cercano al 30% de sus ingresos. Se fueron, viven en Estados Unidos, pero tienen el corazón en sus países de origen.

Esas son las cifras frías de una investigación, que sirve de referencia para saber si valió la pena la aventura del sueño americano. Lo cierto es que muchos salieron de sus países con la meta de trabajar para vivir y que sus familias tuvieran un mejor futuro. Algunos seguramente quedaron atrapados en oficios que nadie quiere hacer y sin mayores esperanzas de progresar.

Atrapados porque es mejor quedarse que regresar a casa.
