o to Spotify or Apple Music and choose one of your favorite songs. It’s very likely that one element of Latin music shows up at the second beat. It doesn't matter if it's a jazz standard or a reggaeton song - the rhythm, sound or instruments will have at least one root in Latin American culture, and that is a fact that few people recognize. When we think of American folk music, it’s sometimes difficult to put a finger on a single genre. We can go from the Appalachian Folk of Frank Proffitt to the American Pie choir of Don Mclean, without knowing exactly what makes a song have a purely American sound, if such a thing exists. If Donald Trump has been able to do something during these last four years, it has been to highlight everything that’s broken in the United States, such as the virulent perpetuation of the myth of purism in a nation with a history traditionally summarized in the textbooks from a white man’s point of view. Nothing could be further from the truth. The roots of African and Irish music managed to merge into calls and responses that crossed

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL rivers and fields and polished a distinct sound to the point of giving the world one of the first concepts of popular music. When that construct faced the Caribbean sound, American culture and idiosyncrasy changed forever. Before Shakira, before Daddy Yankee, before Bad Bunny, before all the songs that resonate in American clubs, there were decades of mergers based on a single Latin rhythm that laid the foundations of world genres such as rock 'n' roll. So when you hear someone again say, "Go back to your country," you can say with confidence that we have actually never left, and that this country, our country, has been built by and for us, whether they like it or not.❚

hile other parts of the city ran for cover as rain poured, the gray skies over Fairhill Square in North Philadelphia remained calm around 6 pm on Aug. 5. That day, the park played host to Philadelphia’s first “Night Out” event of the year, as part of the bigger national movement that seeks to bridge gaps between police departments and neighborhoods across the country.

“We want to be a part of the community,” said Altovise Love-Craighead, Inspector for the Philadelphia Police Department’s LGBTQ+ liaison. “We are here for them, and without them, we can’t exist.” The event featured speeches from Philadelphia Council President Darrell Clarke, U.S. Representative Brendan Boyle and Pennsylvania State Representative Angel Cruz, performances from a plethora of community center groups and artists and vendors selling all types of food and drink. For Fairhill — a community that often finds itself at the center of discussions about the city’s overall rise in gun violence — the night offered a break from that narrative. “People need a little relief from all this craziness that’s going on,” said Council President Darrell Clarke, who was there giving out free gun locks to residents in partnership with the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Department.

MAKING PARKS SAFE AGAIN

He continued to address the importance of the event’s setting. Philadelphia’s parks, meant to be focal points of community unity, have seen that image tarnished by a series of mass shootings

that have left multiple dead and more than a couple wounded. “That cannot be allowed,” said Clarke. On July 24, he announced a push for legislation at the state level to ban guns from rec centers and parks across Pennsylvania. “At a minimum, we create a safe haven, so these young people can have an opportunity...seniors, adults can come out and enjoy their neighborhoods,” said Clarke.

NOT JUST AN URBAN PROBLEM

But as was also highlighted at the event, it’s not just inner-cities that face gun violence. The recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio showed how the plague can affect anyone in the country at any time. Rosanna Bueno, who’s daughter is a member of the Amber Owls, a community cheer squad from Harrowgate that performed at the event, said the shootings in Philly and elsewhere shatter any semblance of peace inside and outside of the house. “There’s nowhere to go to escape it,” she said. U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle said it will take a village to solve America’s gun problem. “We will continue to have to deal with these mass violence events until we stand up as a society from Washington D.C. to every single neighborhood in our country and finally say enough,” he said. ❚

ESSAY ANNE FRANK'S VOICE ON

Terrible things are happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes … Families are torn apart: men, women and children are separated. Children come home from school to find their parents have disappeared.” An eerily accurate description of the terrible reality of immigrant families under Donald Trump’s regime. Yet, these words were written by Anne Frank in her diary on Jan. 13,1943. Frank, of course, was the teenager whose Dutch Jewish family hid from the Nazis in a secret attic in Amsterdam for two years. Eventually discovered and captured by the Gestapo, they were sent to a concentration camp where Anne and most of her

family perished. She was 15. The historical parallel is frightening. A few days after two white terrorists perpetrated horrible massacres in El Paso and Dayton, ICE rounded up more than 650 hard working immigrants in Mississippi. Their children were left exactly in the same situation Anne Frank described. Even though one of the murderers declared that his purpose was to kill as many Mexicans as possible to “stop the invasion” (Trump’s words), the president was beaming. “I want people to know that if they come into the United States illegally, they’re getting out, they’re going to be brought out, Trump said at the White House. “And this serves as a very good deterrent.” The cruelty is astounding. As the ACLU reports, at least seven children, many of them younger than Anne, have either died in custody or after being detained by federal immigration agencies at the border in recent months. “The government may argue that their hands are tied by a lack of resources, but the truth is that these horrors are simply the latest attempt to dehumanize asylum-seekers and migrants,” the ACLU has said. For Trump and his minions, cruelty is the name of the game. ❚

hen you think of the immigration facilities that are detaining asylum seekers in the United States, you picture them as being at the U.S.-Mexico border. But throughout the country, immigrant detention centers are in our own backyard. The York County detention center is known to be the largest Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) detention center in Pennsylvania. In March of 2018, the York County detention center housed 767 detainees in total. Prisons like York generate millions of dollars for the county for housing ICE detainees. In 2018, the York County facility generated $25,431,426 in revenue from its federal contract with ICE for York County. This is the story of one couple who was impacted by the York County Detention Center, and how they experienced the deportation process at the state and federal levels.

THE TURN

Johanny Lebron, a Philadelphia resident, never expected the stories about ICE raids she watched on television to hit so close to home. In 2016, Lebron was a junior at Cabrini University, working as a resident assistant at the school while holding two other job positions. Lebron and her then-boyfriend, Velez, who does not wish to use his real name for fear of repercussions, lived together in North Philadelphia. Velez, who is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, was pulled over by a police officer in 2017 for a traffic stop and possession of 0.8 grams of marijuana. He then had to attend court hearings to face the charges. The possession charge was considered a misdemeanor, and Velez was sent to probation. While on probation it was mandatory for Velez to attend check-up meetings with his probation officer. On March 31, 2017, Velez went to his probation meeting at the York County facility. The meeting was scheduled to be between only Velez and his probation officer — but it soon turned in another direction. During that meeting, Velez was detained by ICE. At the court

hearings, officials continually reminded Velez that since he was an undocumented immigrant, the case could result in his deportation. Lebron arrived at the York facility a day later, but was forced to wait for a long time to visit Velez because many of the family members were trying to visit other detainees. In the courtroom, families were urging the immigration judge to post a bond so that their loved ones who had been detained would be set free. “I remember hearing so many people say it doesn’t matter how much I have to pay,” Lebron said. “That’s when I put myself in their shoes and said, ‘Well, how am I going to react when I see my boyfriend in an orange jumpsuit dressed as if he was a criminal, when the only reason he was picked up was because of his legal status and because Immigration Customs Enforcement wanted to investigate him,” she continued. Within a few months, Velez was deported back to his native Mexico. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Lebron moved to Mexico and married Velez. The York County Detention Center is one of the largest detention centers in the U.S.; it still holds 800 beds specifically for ICE detainees. ❚

his father’s family escaped from Ukraine to Argentina when his father was just seven years old. Whereas his father’s family escaped due to the persecution and discrimination against Jews in the Ukraine at the time, his family moved simply because “we thought the Jews should live in Israel,” he said. Despite living in Israel for such a large portion of his life, Dayan still considers himself a Latino, and uses every opportunity he has to exercise his Spanish. He recalled the times his father used to tell him, “Everything we are... as a family, we owe to the hospitality and the welcoming arms of the Argentinian people, the Latin American people.” At the age of 17, Dayan made the decision to join the Israel Defense Forces where he served in the computerized data processing center, attaining the rank of a major. During his service in the army, Dayan also had an opportunity to do his undergraduate studies. He eventually earned his undergraduate degree in computer science and economics, and later a graduate degree in finance.

AUGUST 14 - 21, 2019

JUMP TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

After seven years, Dayan felt his service in the army had ran its course. While entrepreneurship wasn’t his first choice after he decided he “wanted to start an independent life,” that’s where life took him. At the age of 26, Dayan founded Elad Software Systems, where he served as the CEO and later chairman of the board. Elad Software Systems is Israel’s preeminent software solutions provider. “I basically built the company from zero… to a few hundred employees,” he said. “We diversified, slowly but steadily, the areas of which we operated. We started with the softer development of a tailor-made software for large enterprises, for government ministries, for banks, for insurance companies, for healthcare firms, and we diversified into more advanced areas.” After 22 years, a number of different factors led Dayan to sell.

LIFE AS A DIPLOMAT

Dayan has had a long interest in politics and a desire to serve in public matters. In Aug. 2016, he obtained that opportunity after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed him as the Consul General of Israel to New York. In his current role, he represents the State of Israel throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, and Delaware. “I think the satisfaction of serving your country is huge, especially in that specific position,” said Dayan. ❚

From cleaning canary cages to this night here in New York is a long way. And I don't think there is any other country in the world that can give you that opportunity. I want to say thank you, thank you America, thank you.” In those brief words, the Cuban actor of "I Love Lucy" predicted the fate of millions of Latinos over the next seven decades — and described the stories of many of the individuals who would shape and change American music and popular culture for decades to come. But it was the presentation of a young Mexican named Carlos Santana on the stage of the Woodstock Festival exactly 50 years ago that propelled the fusion of Latin sound with American culture forever.

THIS IS LATIN JAZZ

In a society deeply divided by race and color, at the beginning of the 1930s the sound of the Mississippi's heart rose to Chicago and was electrified, while in downtown Manhattan it was conquered by a handful of Latino musicians, dressed in suits, who with their large orchestras brought the Latin flavor to an unexpected stage. Simultaneously, Cuban clarinetist Mario Balza decided to leave the island to look for opportunities in the United States, where he found the perfect setting for a dark-skinned musician. His work led him to be a

“M

trumpeter and musical director of jazz icons such as Chick Webb, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ella Fitzgerald. The Cuban son of Bauzá and Gillespie’s bebop gave rise to the “cubop,” or original Latin Jazz. It was thanks to Bauzá that key groups like Machito and his Afro-Cubans and artists like Tito Puente had the opportunity to take the stage. Together with Pérez Prado and Xavier Cugat, these Latinos took over Manhattan's nightlife with an exotic, danceable and captivating sound: the Mambo. But the move from nightclubs to American homes was thanks to television, and the success of Desi Arnaz - better known as Ricky Ricardo - Lucille Ball's husband and co-star of the famous television series "I Love Lucy." Arnaz was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1917, to a wealthy family that was ultimately ruined by the confiscation of property conducted by the Fulgencio Batista Revolution in 1933. Arnaz and his family fled to Miami, where the young man would turn to enter-

Through his foreign accent and staging of the Tropicana Club, where his song Babalu would become a classic standard in U.S. music, Arnaz earned a special place in the hearts of Americans. From this moment on, the borders of American sound would continue to disappear, allowing musicians and artists in general to forge a homemade cultural identity.

HOLLYWOOD AND A RHYTHM CALLED ROCK’N’ROLL

The samba, pasodoble, rumba, mambo, and the conga not only became the favorite rhythms of the great jazz bands but also of those who danced and interpreted the new sounds.

PORTADA New choreographies flooded the dance halls, eventually reaching the TV show sets like CBS’s Viva America, and catapulting into large film productions. That includes one we all know as a classic: West Side Story, a musical inspired by Romeo and Juliet but contextualized by Arthur Laurents in the immigrant reality of a New York neighborhood in the mid-50s. The choreography of Jerome Robbins brought the influence of the Latin beats in the American language to its maximum expression, and shone a spotlight on stars such as the Puerto Rican Rita Moreno. However, not everything was as rosy as the dress worn by Anita - the character played by Moreno in the film - because the Oscar recognition Moreno won with the role also, in turn, brought the weight of an endless stereotype. Latinos were a true minority - with an estimated population of 4.5 million nationwide by 1960 made up mainly of Mexicans and Puerto Ricans, though that demographic breakdown would radically change with the triumph of the Castro Revolution in Cuba. The community then became a growing force, with the arrival of 200,000 Cubans to Miami in a period of three years, while the Mexican population reintegrated on the west coast after the end of the Bracero program just a couple of years earlier. Cultural fusion was already inevitable. The influence of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry on the popular sound gave rise to new for-

mats that included drums, bass, and electric guitars, and a totally new sound: Rock n 'Roll. "One, two, three, cha-cha-cha" is now a universal rhythm, a metric that multiplied and merged with songs as ubiquitous as "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones or "Day Tripper" by The Beatles, opening the door to a new music genre, without distinction of race. Thanks to Berry's “Havana Moon,” for example, a new hit was born that in just two decades would completely change the country's music scene: Ricardo Valenzuela's (Ritchie Valens) La Bamba. The Champs, Question Mark, and The Mysterians, Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, Thee Midniters and the Texas Tornadoes did their thing with Latino members who combined Mexican music with the new sound of rock, a phenomenon that would be celebrated at a mass event in 1969.

FIFTY YEARS OF THE SUMMER OF LOVE AND ROCK AND ROLL

At the end of the 60s, the Revolution of psychedelia, music and hippie counter-culture merged into an event promoted as "three days of peace and music,” between August 15 and 18, 1969. On a 600-acre estate near White Lake in Bethel (New York), Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lang summoned more than 400,000 people to celebrate the spirit of peace and revolution against the American welfare system, bringing more than 32 artists and groups that represented the entire musical movement of the moment. Among them, a Mexican who would become the symbol of the Latino community in cultural integration: Carlos Santana. Born in Mexico and the son of a Mariachi violinist, Santana emigrated as a child from Tijuana to San Francisco, where blues and guitar solos would amalgamate with his innate sense of Latin sound. Santana didn't know Machito or Tito Puente. His arrival across the border with Mexico put him in direct contact with guitarists like B.B. King or T. Bone Walker, whose influence sculpted his language on the guitar - away from the mambo and the cha-cha-chá. After founding a group of blues and acid rock, Santana would arrive on the stage of the Woodstock

HARLEM'S NEW SOUND

Children of post-war immigrants, the Niuyoricans were part of the young generation that sought an identity far from the patriotism of war conflicts. Names like Joe Cuba, Pete Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, and Jimmy Bosch, began to find a place in urban culture, without achieving greater success on the radio. The so-called Salsa On 2 - a rhythmic modification of the traditional Cuban sound - began playing in the nightclubs in Manhattan, cultivating fans along the way. Faced with the omission of record houses and radios, musician Johny Pacheco and lawyer Jerry Masucci decided to found Fania Records, considered the most important music label in the history of Latin music and that would lead to stardom artists like Héctor Lavoe, Larry Harlow, Ray Barretto, Celia Cruz, Willie Colón, Bobby Valentín, Rubén Blades and Cheo Feliciano.

knowingly stumbled upon the festivities of Taibo II’s annual “Semana Negra” in his hometown of Gijón. It is a week-long celebration of crime novels. At the time, I was just looking for a good club to dance, or bar to indulge in something I couldn’t do back in the states. I thought it was odd the entire city would celebrate a genre of literature, but quickly learned not to question the partying motivations of Spaniards. It would take four years before I learned the brilliance of the festival’s founder. On July 29, I talked with Dr. Raúl Diego Rivera Hernández from Villanova for the eleventh episode of Literatura Oral to explore Taibo II’s “No Habra Final Feliz”, the fourth novel in his series about Detective Belascoarán Shayne.

TAIBO II’S NEO-POLICIAL

Taibo II was a revolutionary, not just in the topics he chose to confront in Mexican society, but also in the annals of Latin American literary history. He pioneered a new take on the classic neo-policial genre that uses the crime novel to be critical of the government and delve AUGUST 14 - 21, 2019

into the experiences of those living under its oppression. His inspiration in “No Habra Final Feliz” (There’s No Happy Ending) is the June 10, 1971 mass murder of student demonstrators in Mexico City, known as El Halconazo. Many blame a shady government organization known as Los Halcones for the massacre, but the crime has never been solved.

CONFRONTING THE REAL WORLD

The atmosphere felt throughout the novel is one of disenchantment, brought by either Belascoarán’s interactions with the public or Mother nature. It’s a feeling brought under circumstances of government corruption and oppression. Rather than strive for justice, Taibo II’s protagonist fights for the truth. It may not provide the happy ending most readers want, but is a sobering reminder of the very real circumstances that Mexico dealt with in the past, and continues to cope with into the future. ❚

The gun control debate in the U.S. has once again entered into the forefront after two separate mass shootings on Aug. 3 & 4 took dozens of lives. On Saturday morning, a gunman entered into a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, and killed 20 people, while injuring 26 more. Just 13 hours later, a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio took the lives of 9, and injured 20 others. After the game, Bedoya expanded on his thoughts: “I’m not going to sit idly by and watch this stuff happen and not say something,” he said. “Before I’m an athlete, before I’m a soccer player, I’m a human being first.”

This isn’t the first time Bedoya has used his looked to use his platform to support this particular cause. In March 2018, less than a month after the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, Bedoya wore a shirt under his jersey, that read: “MSD Strong,” in support of the 17 individuals who were killed during that mass shooting. That tragedy was close to home for Bedoya, who was raised 17 miles away from Parkland in Weston, Florida. This weekend’s two mass shootings brings the number of mass shootings in the U.S. in 2019 to a total of 251. As high as that number is, the question remains just how many mass shootings need to occur before President Trump and the U.S. Congress move forward with gun control legislation that in other countries has been proven to drastically reduce these occurrences. In recent years — whether it was the mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, the nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, or the Sutherland Springs church shooting in Texas — there has been constant talk about gun control reform, but very little action. If history tells us anything, it is likely that more solutions in the form of gun control legislation will be offered in the wake of these two mass shootings, but little to nothing will actually be done to address the issue head-on.❚ AUGUST 14 - 21, 2019

“MOURNING FOR WHITENESS” L This essay by Morrison, published in The New Yorker magazine in the wake of Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential elections, examines the veins of white supremacy which fed Trump’s support, and which have only been further exposed in the successive years of his presidency.

BELOVED It has been called the American novel of the twentieth century - and with good reason. Published in 1987, the novel, which portrays the tragic legacy of slavery that haunts a black family in Ohio in the post-Civil War era, has received countless awards over the years. But more than that, it articulates a deep truth of the United States which in most public and political spheres the country has proved itself incapable of addressing with truth and honesty.

GOD HELP THE CHILD

THE SOURCE OF SELF-REGARD

This is Morrison’s final novel that she published in her lifetime, in 2015. The first of her novels to be set in contemporary times, the story follows Bride, a woman who is forced to confront the childhood trauma she endured as a result of abuse and neglect of her lighter-skinned parents due to her dark skin. .

This 2019 collection of essays, speeches, and other writings from Morrison is the last nonfiction collection that was published in her lifetime. Apart from her work as a novelist, Morrison had a long and distinguished career as a professor, lecturer, critic, editor, and academic; her nonfiction writings contain the same power, dimension, beauty and nuance as her fiction work. .

YOU SHOULD BE READING

THE BLUEST EYE Morrison’s first novel, The Bluest Eye was published in 1970. She had written the novel in snatches of time, between raising two sons on our own and working at RandomHouse publishing in Syracuse, NY. Its impact as a story of a black girl who suffers poverty and sexual abuse in small-town Ohio, and who desperately wishes for blue eyes, a marker of whiteness, in order to be seen as beautiful. . Asthma is a disease of the lungs that makes it hard to breathe and causes chest tightness, coughing, and wheezing. There are many factors in and outside of the home that can aggravate asthma or trigger an asthma attack. One of these factors is outdoor air pollution. In the Philadelphia region, pollution from cars, trucks, and buses form ozone, and ozone make it hard for people with asthma to breathe. When ozone levels outside reach unhealthy levels, the Pennsylvania

ENGLISH Department of Environmental Protection declares an “Air Quality Action Day.” On these days, it is important that children don’t overexert themselves and take plenty of breaks from activities. Children with asthma should be especially careful, and they should rest if they start having trouble breathing. On Air Quality Action Days it is particularly important to take steps to prevent air pollution. You can learn when ozone levels are going to be unhealthy by visiting www.airqualitypartnership.org. You can also sign up at this site to receive text or email alerts when the air quality is going to be unhealthy. Everyone can take steps to prevent air pollution. Simple things like turning off your vehicle when it’s parked, making sure that you keep your car or truck well maintained, and walking or biking for short trips are all actions that you can take to protect your health, reduce air pollution, and even save money.

ENGLISH

"I always enjoyed writing and singing for as long as I can remember."

Check out the Q&A here: What sparked the interest in becoming a singer/songwriter/performer? I always enjoyed writing and singing for as long as I can remember. I was always on the school, church choir and a part of the school band. A big moment for me, when it all 'clicked,' was after my friend played me Lauryn Hill's MTV Unplugged. [Her] YouTube videos and the live recordings moved me. I wanted to be just like her, and that is what really made me fall in love with singing/songwriting — performing altogether.

AUGUST 14 - 21, 2019

ENFOQUE "I want to be bigger than music. I want to be part of the solution... that is the responsibility that comes along with being [a] Afro-Latinx singer/songwriter, for me." What’s it like to be an artist from North Philly who’s about to take her music to the global stage? I don't really look at it like that. I look at it like ... Wow, I get to create real art with my friends for a living, and that in itself is a true blessing. I'm just filled with excitement and gratitude at the moment. I can't wait to drop new music soon and present to the world what we have been working on.

You’re a signed artist, but you still represent by having people from Philly on your team. Can you tell us whom you’re working with? My management team, Brandon Pankey, Jovan Goldstein and Brandon McPherson; my engineers, JoeLogic215 and Ben Thomas; my music director, CJ Branch; and the best producer in the world — my producer and big brother, Pop Wansel. They're all so important and just amazing at what they do. It's really an honor that they choose to work with me and help me accomplish my dreams. More importantly, they're all from the greatest place in the world — Philly.

Where’s your favorite place to perform in Philadelphia, and why? I would have to say World Cafe LIVE, because it's where I first started performing my own songs. They had an open mic night on Mondays years ago, and they showed real support. Is it a dream of yours to perform on this newly restored venue on North Broad?

It is. I know it's a special venue and a part of Philly culture. So, I want to be a part of that too.

What’s it like to be an Afro-Latinx female singer/songwriter these days? What advice would you have for other up and coming artist? I would say it's about knowing who you are and being patient. You have to be, like, the greatest team in the NBA (the Sixers), and "Trust the process." Lol. Make sure you know what your values are, and act on them. For me, that means to use my platform, when I get it, to reach people and make them feel the humanness in my music. I always want to be real and relatable. It's equally important for me to raise awareness about injustices happening every day to people of color and to give back to my community. I want to be bigger than music. I want to be part of the solution. I need to be, and that is the responsibility that comes along with being an Afro-Latinx singer/songwriter, for me.

Philly fast five: 1. Where are your favorite places to eat out? Freddy and Tony's — the one on 2nd and Allegheny.

2. 76ers or Phillies? Sixers all day. Embiid is the greatest in the league. Chip soon come. Don't argue with me. Lol.

3. When you have friends in town, what are the must-go-to spots? The art museum. Freddy and Tony's. Every time, lol. Porky's Point too!

4. Favorite Philly music era (Neo Soul, TSOP, now, etc)? Now. There's so much greatness coming out of Philly. It's an amazing thing to witness and be a part of.

5. What’s your favorite Philly spot to write your music? In my room. It's where I'm most comfortable.

What’s next for you in your career? The next move is to put out music and shoot my first music video ever. I'm excited! ❚

No discuta conmigo, dice riendo.

Freddy and Tony's. Cada vez. ¡Porky's Point, también!

¡Estoy tan emocionada! ❚

Unemployment and the lack of a need to obtain a visa to travel through Mexico has increased immigration of Ecuadorians to the U.S. via the southern border with Mexico. On July 10, William Murillo, co-founder of “1800 Migrante,” asked Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to bring back humanitarian Mexican visas for Ecuadorians as a way to keep immigrants safe.

CIERRE IN CLOSING

WE ARE ALREADY

While politics may set us apart, music has the power to bring us together. At AL DÍA we experienced it last Friday with the successful launch of #ALDIAJammin’, the new Live presentation at the ALDIA Lounge. Pictured here is Alex, one of two guitarists for Todos Santos.

THE WALLS TO STOP THE SO CALLED “INVASION OF LATINOS” ARE FUTILE. THE “INVADERS” ARE ALREADY ALL-IN, CULTURALLY SPEAKING.

LOS MUROS PARA DETENER LA LLAMADA "INVASIÓN DE LATINOS" SON INÚTILES. LOS "INVASORES" YA ESTÁN INTEGRADOS, CULTURALMENTE HABLANDO..

n Tommy Mottola’s HBO documentary “The Latin Explosion”, Gloria Estefan is quoted saying that today “Latin rhythms are in Pop, Hip Hop, and in every genre of music” in America. “Music is always in the cutting age of new things that happen,” she explains. In her eyes musicians —way better than politicians do, I may add— “are able to reach across ethnic and cultural lines” to bring us all together. Politics aside, America’s most radical demographic and cultural transformation in a century goes on unabated, driven largely by the 60 millions Americans of Latino descent, very prominently on the cultural ground: Not only in Music (after Gloria Stefan, followed Shakira), but also in Cuisine (José Garces, here in town, being my favorite) Sports (check the Phillies roster) and Media (AL DÍA, my favorite, yes). In terms of the economic contributions, just take the average income of Americans of Latino descent, which continues to climb faster than their population numbers— a better known category. Latino Americans are projected to become a quarter of the U.S. population in 5 years, with a Census 2020 fast approaching to confirm the nationwide trends. But their purchasing power, made possible by their entrepreneurship and hard-working habits, has reached an unprece-

While the overwhelming national narrative -conveniently manufacture on the eve of a presidential election, portrays Latinos like a horde that is “invading” the country, the reality is that they are already here — and have been here for centuries, like in Texas, even predating the formation of the State in 1835— embedded in the entire American society, deep inside, and all-in, in the multiple layers of the cultural and economic fabric of the nation.❚

Purchasing power, made possible by their entrepreneurship and hardworking habits, has reached an unprecedented $1.7 trillion, growing 70% faster than non-latino.
