A COMMITMENT TO EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE

FOR 19 YEARS, SARITA BROWN AND DEBORAH SANTIAGO HAVE WORKED HARD TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION FOR LATINOS ACROSS THE U.S.

DESDE HACE 19 AÑOS, SARITA BROWN Y DEBORAH SANTIAGO VIENEN TRABAJANDO INTENSAMENTE POR MEJORAR LA CALIDAD DE LA EDUCACIÓN PARA LOS LATINOS.

In this edition, the main article is about the work of Excelencia in Education, an organization created in 2004 by Sarita Brown and Deborah Santiago on behalf of Latino students in the United States.

ey met in August 1997 in Washington, D.C., when they were both working at the White House, on a project for Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, of which Brown was executive director and Santiago, a policy analyst.

Sarita Brown had studied at the University of Texas, in Austin. As a professional, she created a graduate-level minority strategy with 9 colleges and 85 departments. By the time she retired 15 years later, she had moved the institution to rst place in doctoral degrees for Latinos and 20th for African Americans.

It was an eye-opening experience for what came next. From there he went to work in the White House, in Bill Clinton’s administration, on an issue consistent with what he had been doing on behalf of Hispanic students.

Brown and Santiago met there and had three years of experience getting to know the country’s education in di erent aspects. A er nishing their work in Washington, they went separate ways. Brown joined the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF).

e turning point for what came next came with the release of the U.S. Census at the turn of the century and the way the media addressed the growth of the Latino population. Brown said that “the growth of the Latino community and its vitality was presented as a liability”, when in reality “we are the living force of this country”.

So, with that backdrop and staying connected, Brown and Santiago decided to create Excelencia in Education, to contribute to the higher education of young Latinos. e Washington-based company has a network of more than 160 institutions, all run by people with the conviction to raise the bar for Latino success.

“How wonderful it is when we have students coming out of institutions strong

and ready to take advantage of every opportunity. at is the ultimate aspiration of an institution of higher learning”, Brown responded.

e priority is not to focus on enrollment, but on the faculty, the curriculum and the student experience. And there is also the Seal of Excellence, a certi cation issued to those institutions with such a policy.

THE AWARD-WINNING PODCAST ABOUT MARADONA

is edition also features a report on e Last Days of Maradona, the podcast about the late Argentine soccer star, which won an award at the Global Podcast Ondas Awards.

ere are six 40-minute episodes, launched in November 2021, in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. AL DÍA interviewed Mariano Pagella, producer of the Spanish version, and Martina Castro, executive producer and CEO of Adonde Media. z

BRINGING HIS EXPERTISE TO COMCAST

In 2022, Torres joined Comcast as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing, where he “drive[s] sales and marketing activities and e orts for our customers in this region.”

As a Spanish speaker, Torres is able to communicate with Latino customers and community organizations to help drive their e orts.

One such community organization is Concilio, the oldest Latino organization in Philadelphia that focuses on family services. In 2022, Comcast partnered with the group to put on Concilio’s annual Hispanic Fiesta event.

ey used the event to provide community members with information about their products, like Internet Essentials. is product became very useful during the pandemic when everything went online.

and said he’d work with the city’s banks to make it a reality.

“ e success of an entrepreneur is the success of a city,” Domb said.

Helen Gym was pressed on whether she would support opening more charter schools for Latinos, who are attending them at higher numbers in recent years. While not answering the direct question, she did say she would support students across the spectrum of schools — parochial, public, private and charter — and reemphasized her past support for public schools.

“I’m very clear that charter schools have a role to play in a broader public school landscape,” Gym said.

in the race, was asked to name two pillars of her public safety plan that would make Latino communities safer. She spoke of her plan to bring 300 o cers to engage in community policing and said her administration would work closer with communities to nd solutions that work for them.

Instead of doing that, Parker said the city and some of her fellow candidates engaged in “I-know-what’s-best-for-yousepolicy-making.” Her example was safe injection sites as a solution for the opioid crisis.

On illegal dumping, Domb, Je Brown, David Oh, Rebecca Rhynhart, James Deleon and Warren Bloom all called for harsher penalties for those engaging in illegal dumping. Brown also added installing more security cameras.

e success of an entrepreneur is the success of a city.

FALIO’S SECOND RUN IN CAMDEN

THE LEADER IS OUT TO BE ONE OF THE NEW, YOUNG FACES ON CAMDEN CITY COUNCIL AFTER THIS ELECTION SEASON. ESTE LÍDER SE PERFILA COMO UNA DE LAS CARAS NUEVAS Y JÓVENES EN EL CONCEJO MUNICIPAL DE CAMDEN, DESPUÉS DE ESTA TEMPORADA ELECTORAL.

Falio Leyba-Martinez wants change in Camden and he’s hoping to do that in 2023 by becoming the next City Councilmember to represent the city’s Ward 3. is is Leyba-Marinez’s second run at a City Council seat a er an unsuccessful 2017 bid for an at-large Camden City Council seat, and a win would make him the rst Afro-Dominican to ever hold the post.

A Camden resident for over 25 years, and originally from North Jersey, his parents bought a small store in Centerville, Leyba Grocery, that is still operating to this day. Leyba-Martinez himself is a small business owner who understands the nuances specific to the large Black and Latino population he’d be serving.

“I’m running because we also need to bring more small business-minded folks to the table. e owners that are in my particular ward, they need representation,” he said. “ ey need to be able to know what grants and opportunities they have, what things are there to help them.”

“I believe in two things, unifying our community, and also strengthening our small businesses that the Mayor is already doing,” he added.

Despite a losing e ort for an at-large seat in 2017 — amassing 585 votes to come in sixth of nine candidates running that year — the longtime resident enters this new battle for a ward seat ve years later as a stronger candidate and a team player.

JOINING A “GREAT TEAM”

Ward 3 has around 15,000 registered voters, and Leyba-Martinez expressed excitement at the prospect of working with the current crop of Camden government leaders.

“ ere’s a great team assembled in the city of Camden right now. Our mayor Vic Carstarphen, he is a mentor for me. Since he’s taken the position, he’s kind of guided me on di erent things. I also have support

from our school board president, Wasim Muhammad,” Leyba-Martinez said.

He also emphasized the necessity for action, with current representatives no longer engaging the community, according to him.

“ e folks that have represented this particular ward, have lost touch with our community,” Leyba-Martinez said. “We need to reestablish that. e number one word of this campaign is communication. If we’re not communicating with the people we represent, what are we there for?”

“We need to start understanding who we are, so that we can unify our community. I believe I’m the only candidate who’s going to be able to do that in my ward,” he added.

His running mates on his ticket include Arthur Barclay in Ward One, a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from the 5th district; Chris Christopher Collins in Ward Two, the incumbent, and also the CEO and Editor-in-Chief of the Anointed News Journal (ANJ); and Jeanette Ramos in Ward Four, founder and CEO of It Takes a Village Housing, a nonpro t dedicated to providing drug and alcohol treatment services.

“Every single one of my colleagues running has that connection directly with our community, and all want to serve and communicate better with our residents,” he said.

MOTIVATING THE NEXT LEADERS

As Board Member of the Camden City School Advisory, he’s supported several

EXCELENCIA IN EDUCATION SERVING THE LATINO COMMUNITY

CO-FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT SARITA BROWN TELLS AL DÍA ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION’S TRAJECTORY.

SU COFUNDADORA Y PRESIDENTA, SARITA BROWN, LE CUENTA A AL DÍA LA TRAYECTORIA DE LA ORGANIZACIÓN.

COVER STORY

Sarita Brown and Deborah Santiago founded Excelencia in Education in 2004. Born to accelerate Latino student success in higher education and shi old conversations, Excelencia’s work is about the Latino human capital of this country.

Instead of focusing on immigration, the organization worries about Latinos who are in the United States right now. It devotes attention to the participation of students who are transitioning from the K-12 system into colleges and universities that are ready to receive them — and, most importantly, ready to propel them into society.

e now president Brown never thought she would be leading such a prestigious organization, but this is a story that has roots more than two decades ago.

Brown began her professional career at the University of Texas at Austin (UT), where she was also both an undergrad and a graduate student. In her experience working as a young professional in the institution, Brown built the minority a airs operation at the graduate level, a strategy that included 85 departments and 9 colleges. When she le UT, the institution was ranked number one in granting doctor’s degrees to Latinos and top 20 to African Americans.

“It was a life lesson for me,” she said. “What I experienced is that if you are clear

about what you seek to accomplish, if you recognize what is the change and action that you want to accomplish, and then you are pretty straightforward with working with others, you can do it.”

Because part of the growing experience is moving away, a er 15 years, Brown le UT to live an adventure at the White House. Initially, she expected for it to be just that, an adventure from which she would go back to Texas. Fortunately, things don’t always happen as we expect. In Washington D.C, Brown met Santiago, a partnership that since the beginning was promised to do great things.

HOW IT STARTED

Excelencia grew from Brown and Santiago’s shared professional experiences serving the Clinton administration, in the 90s. During her rst federal service, Brown was the Executive Director of e White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, in 1997.

She remembers moving to the capital in the midst of the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act — described by her as a particularly signi cant moment because an e ort to secure federal funding for Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) was nally e ectively being supported in legislation.

A data enthusiast and specialist, Santiago was a Policy Analyst in the department at the time. According to Brown, there is no one else that can read data the way Santiago does — who also studied issues related to HSIs on her own.

e synergy between the two has happened since they rst met in August of 1997. More than work colleagues, they became friends.

ey spent three years working on all aspects of education in the country — from early childhood to lifelong education. When the work was done, they followed separated paths. While Santiago went to California, Brown joined the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF).

FIGHTING THE FINANCIAL BARRIER

Since the beginning, Excelencia has focused on financial aid and how students finance their education — it seeks to demystify the discussion of cost and spread knowledge about it. Excelencia also highlights the good practices that are being done by some institutions. Bringing attention to it inspires others and elevates the ones achieving good results.

Always connected by discussions surrounding the Latino community, they were concerned about the way the media was talking about Latinos as if they were a problem —especially a er the release of the 2000s U.S. Census.

“ is is so wrong headed,” Brown remembers thinking. “It presents the growth of the Latino community and its vibrancy and vitality as a liability. We are an asset, we are the liveforce of this country, we are clearly the potential student body and workforce.”

Brown and Santiago asked each other if there was something they could do to help move the chronic discussion of problems into a discussion of the use of e ective solutions. Focused on making it factual and clear, and relevant for all positions of authority but mainly higher education, they started with a concept: the Excelencia Initiative.

CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS

Excelencia now has a network of over 160 institutions that are led by presidents and chancellors who are committed to increasing Latino success rates. ey want and are ready to do the work needed. ey name a team and work directly with Excelencia — something that didn’t exist before.

From 2004 to 2023, the work that Excelencia has created — which is a good deal of research and analysis — has been coupled with a structure, as a part of their tactical plan. Brown said that college and university leaders can access evidence-based practices, network and get engaged by connecting with them.

In the past, people may have had intentions to change the discourse about Latinos, but they didn’t know how to do it. Excelencia came to put a spotlight on it, by driving positive attention to programs, places and people that produce positive results.

“People describe us as an advocacy organization,” Brown said. “We are not your classic advocacy organization. No, we don’t lobby congress or legislators, but we in uence people’s attention.”

People engage in these conversations about Latinos knowing that changes are possible — it’s no longer just in theory. It’s just a matter of how fast, wide and big they want to go, Brown stated.

DATA IS THE KEY

A fact driven organization, Santiago says that everything Excelencia produces is cited and sourced. If anyone is skeptical, they can look at it for themselves on the organization’s website.

“ ere are some people who don’t want to hear what we say, but they can’t refute what we say,” Brown said.

She reinforces that institutions have to look at the data they collect about admissions, degrees, class performance and more. e purpose is to not only analyze the people who are being recruited and admitted, but also what happens to these students while they are on campus and part of the institution.

“How wonderful it is when we have students that leave institutions strong and

ready to take on all opportunities,” Brown added. “It’s the highest aspiration for a higher education institution.”

HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS

For Brown, the idea of a HSI is very powerful.

e federal designation to become a HSI is enrollment driven and institutions that reach 25% of Hispanic students can submit an application and go through the process. However, actually understanding what it means to serve this community is another discussion.

Faculty, curriculum and students’ experience say more about inclusion than just enrollment — and Brown knew that since the beginning. As a young professional still at UT, she supported the idea but wanted to see it grow.

Today, there are over 500 HSIs, and Excelencia keeps working to see it get bigger and better.

Because the majority of the institutions still lack in intentionally serving Latino students, Excelencia established in 2018 the Seal of Excelencia, a national certi cation that aims to support and reinforce institutions that strive to go beyond enrollment.

ere are the three core components that framework the Seal of Excelencia: data, practice, and leadership. Aligning them allows an internal review of how the institution in Excelencia’s terms intentionally serves.

“Institutions like to talk about their great programs, but don’t see if there are any Latinos on it,” Brown confessed.

SERVING THE LATINO COMMUNITY

e quality of how well an institution serves rst generation college students also talks about its concerns about Latinos, as most of them are the rst in their families to go to college. It’s necessary to teach and familiarize those students with college knowledge — from how to choose classes to how to manage work and study.

During Brown’s time at UT, the institution had Latinos for sports, but not leadership positions. She highlights how important it is for institutions to really want to include this community.

“Not because there are more Mexicans in Texas, for example, that Texan institu-

tions are making an e ort to include them more,” Brown said.

Regarding Philadelphia, she mentions how present the Latino community is in the city. ere are many higher education institutions in Philadelphia that are wonderful, but don’t have a signi cant embedded experience of developing relations with the Latino community.

For the future, Brown says it is important for us all to take responsibility and consciously collaborate with others in the community.

e solutions the country needs are clear, but it takes courage and stamina to do it.

“If you [college or university leader] want to be innovative and future oriented in 2023, gure out how to use college and uni-

versity structures to match with the people who want to get degrees, succeed and help them get degrees,” Brown said. “Now we are talking about true innovation.”

is is the time to nd the resources to push a little further. More of the same is going to get us more of the same. Mastering what currently exists is important, but just doing that does not innovate, she added.

Working on a plan that brings changes not just for ourselves, but for the country itself is what Brown, Santiago and the whole Excelencia team are committed to doing.

“Don’t think that you have to do it alone,” Brown said. “Entre nos, we need to be together.” z

I know as a practitioner and activist that higher education can do better, most organizations can do better.

THE 20TH AL DÍA DIVERSE CITY CAREER FAIR

THIS YEAR MARKS THE 20TH EDITION OF THE ANNUAL EFFORT TO HELP PHILADELPHIA’S WORKFORCE CLOSER REFLECT ITS POPULATION. ESTE AÑO SE CELEBRA LA VIGÉSIMA EDICIÓN DE ESTA INICIATIVA ANUAL, DESTINADA A QUE LA POBLACIÓN ACTIVA DE FILADELFIA REFLEJE MEJOR LA REALIDAD DE SU CIUDAD.

When AL DÍA hosted its rst diversity career fair in 2001 — then named the AL DÍA Hispanic Career Fair — Philadelphia’s workforce landscape looked much di erent than it does today.

While Philadelphia saw a signi cant population decrease in the two decades leading up to the new millennium, in the two decades since, it has seen growth in both population and diversity.

Despite this trend, the diversity within our city’s workforce still has a long way to go in order to mirror it more closely.

Since the rst AL DÍA Career Fair more than 20 years ago, the goal has always been to confront the challenge of nding and recruiting quality candidates to diversify the city’s workforce.

A LOOK AT SOME NUMBERS

Across its more than 200-year history, Philadelphia has had its share of ebbs and ows as it pertains to its population growth and decline.

In the decade between 2010 and 2020, the city saw a roughly 77,800 population increase, which brought the city’s population to more than 1.6 million, according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

at 5.1% increase was the largest 10year population increase the city saw since 1950, which saw a 7.3% increase from the previous decade.

e most recent Census data reported Philadelphia’s racial demographic breakdown as 44% Black, 43% White, 16% Latino, and 8% Asian.

Since 2016, the City has released an annual Philadelphia Workforce Pro le Report to provide the breakdown of the level of diversity in Philadelphia’s municipal workforce and exempt workforce.

e 2022 municipal workforce was 48.2% Black, 38.6% White, 7.2% Hispanic, and 3.9% Asian.

Furthermore, the exempt workforce was 43.1% White. 37.9% Black, 8.1% Hispanic, and 7.2% Asian.

Compared to the racial demographics of the city’s population, there is much work to be done for the workforce to more accurately re ect the population.

at is why AL DÍA hosts its annual AL DÍA Diverse City Career Fair.

A COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

is year will mark the 20th edition of this event.

During these two decades, the mission has always remained the same — to help various prominent local companies and organizations meet with diverse job seekers for new job and career opportunities.

More than two dozen exhibitors will be present at the 2023 AL DÍA Diverse City Career Fair, eager to diversify its sta .

e featured employers include advocacy organizations like the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center, Women Against Abuse, and Project HOME; to community organizations like Congreso and APM; and large corporations like PECO, Independence Blue Cross; among several others.

e 2023 AL DÍA Diverse City Career Fair will take place Friday, April 21 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.z

“The news we never wanted to give”, “He’s leaving but he’s not leaving us. Diego is eternal”, “In the hands of God”, “What planet did you go to”.... We could dedicate a whole page to all the headlines of November 20th, 2020, that reported the death of Argentine Diego Armando Maradona, one of the most important soccer players of all time. e main sport and its country, which lives soccer with a fervent passion, paused to mourn the heart attack that ended the life of the 10, who was 60 years old at the time. Without abandoning the controversy that accompanied him since his career as a professional sportsman, Diego’s death paralyzed Argentina and took over television screens, radio programs, newspaper and magazine covers. Nothing else was being talked about.

e press, in its eagerness for scoops while a whole family and a nation were dressed in mourning, ventured into sketching answers to questions such as: was the operation for a subdural hematoma that the former player underwent shortly before his death necessary?; who was in charge of taking care of him that day?; what medications was he taking and who was supplying him?

In a scenario of doubts clouding the certainties, the responsible and impartial journalistic investigation gained strength and motivated, thanks to the initiative of Spotify, the production of a program in an innovative format with an unstoppable boom worldwide: the podcast. us, was born e Last Days of Maradona, with six episodes of 40 minutes each.

A STORY

IN HIS OWN VOICE

In addition to the news in traditional media, in social networks and messaging platforms began to leak audios recorded by the same environment of Barrilete Cósmico: people of his entire con dence among which were nurses, doctors, surgeons and lawyers.

ere were not two or three or four, but 4,300 voice messages, intimate and revealing about the day-to-day life with Pelusa, which reached the hands of the justice system, which was forced to open an investigation against eight people for “simple homicide with eventual malice”.

is highly informative material was accessed by the small screen and a group of 70 people, who launched e last days of Maradona in Spanish, Portuguese, English and French in November 2021, a er an exhaustive work of almost a year.

e hosts for each version were journalist Matias Martin, in Argentina; former French soccer player ierry Henry, in France and the United Kingdom; former Argentine soccer player Jorge Valdano, in Spain and Latin America; journalist Juca Kfuori, in Brazil, and actor Salvatore Esposito, in Italy.

“We had the audios of the internal communication of everyone around them, what they were thinking, what they were talking about. We had the audios that were sent specifically at the time each of the things were happening, how it a ected them, how it a ected Maradona. It was something so direct and just thinking about available material, it was something unique”, said Mariano Pagella, producer of the Spanish version podcast, in conversation with AL DÍA from Buenos Aires.

In a country where being a ‘Maradonian’ is a religion, Pagella admitted not to be a soccer player, much less a connoisseur of the history of the 10. It was precisely this fresh and outsider vision that enriched the program’s story, according to Martina Castro, executive producer and CEO of Adonde Media.

“It was important that this series was not so insider so that people from the outside could enjoy and understand it. at Mariano was a bit of an outsider was important, to give it that outside look. Although we also had the challenge of hooking people who knew a lot and who were fans”, said Martina Castro from the United States, where she also coordinated all the production teams.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT EL PIBE DE ORO (‘THE GOLDEN BOY’)

Castro stressed that, for her, it was essential that the story was not macabre or sad. “We are talking about an extremely important person for the Argentine people, for many people around the world. We were going to talk about death, about di cult moments, but the series could not be all that. It had to be entertaining”, he said.

Pagella, for his part, confessed that the podcast allowed him to get to know from the inside the magic that the idol gave o and continues to give o in a population as vehement as the Argentinean one. “ is was not just the story of Diego’s death. It had to do also, in a way, with how we treat our heroes, how we raise a person. We put them so high, so high, that their fall is so abysmal and so strong. And by being so high, they end up isolated from the world. ey are le in another universe, which is the angle from which we take this story”, he added.

In February of this year, the podcast e Last Days of Maradona won the Premios Ondas for Podcast in Best Production category. e jury valued “the rst simultaneous launch of a podcast adapted to six regions” and having “aligned a list of professionals from half the world in a project with a sum of adaptations to address the story of the most inuential soccer player in the history of the most popular sport”.

disfrutarla y entenderla.

BINDING MAGIC AND HISTORY

JULIAN RANDALL WRITES FOR LATINX KIDS TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR PAST FROM AN OPTIMISTIC PERSPECTIVE.

JULIÁN RANDALL ESCRIBE PARA QUE LOS NIÑOS LATINOS CONOZCAN SU PASADO DESDE UNA PERSPECTIVA OPTIMISTA. ES EL AUTOR DE VARIAS NOVELAS.

Julian Randall grew up in Chicago but he considers Philadelphia his artistic hometown. “I began taking writing very seriously when I was going to events at the Philly Pigeon back in the 2010s!,” he recalled in a recent interview with AL DÍA, a newspaper he is very familiar with. “AL DÍA was always a vibe for me. If I saw it on a stand it felt like I was somewhere safe, so being interviewed for it is wild,” he joked.

With an MFA in Poetry from Ole Miss, Julian Randall de nes himself as a Living Queer Afrolatino poet and children’s book writer from Chicago.

Born to a Dominican mother from Washington Heights, he is the author of Refuse (Pitt, 2018), a poetry book documenting a young biracial man’s journey through the mythos of blackness, latinidad, family, sexuality and a hostile American landscape, as well as the middle grade fantasy novels Pilar Ramirez And e Escape from Zafa (Holt, Winter 2022), and Pilar Ramirez And e Course of San Zenon (Holt, February 2023), starring a teenager with a deep curiosity for her identity and her family’s country of origin: the Dominican Republic.

“When I was 8 years old I stumbled downstairs looking for my mom and I found her crying, and I’d never seen her cry before. And she was crying over a book, so I was double confused. And when I asked what she was crying about, she said ‘this is the story of the woman who fought back against the man who kicked your abuelo o the island,’” Randall recalled. e story her mother told her then —her grandfather had to be exiled from the Dominican Republic for having told a joke about Trujillo to his friends— stuck in her head and all the questions that were raised then are the ones she wanted to answer in her series on Pilar Ramirez.

“ e rst time I heard this all eight years of my mind exploded with questions. Questions on why I’d never learned this in school, on whether Trujillo was still out there, on what happens if they had caught him. And

all of those questions, all that worry for which there were no books for a kid my age, all of it became Pilar. I wanted to make a book where an Afrolatina nds magic in memory and challenge in history. I wanted the daughter my mother never had to be a hero I’d have loved as a kid. I’m blessed that all of that became Pilar,” he explained.

THE BURDEN OF LINEAGE

According to Randall, we have everything to gain from reckoning with the past with an eye towards healing. “We are all, each of us, in the face of a renewed tide of fascistic autocrats. People are banning books because they are looking to ban people. ey are also banning people outright and it will continue for as long as we refuse to learn from and build upon the past,” he said. “I write for all kids who are looking to take a stand against that, globally or on their block. I wrote this book to Latinx kids, but I wrote it for everyone, because everyone is a ected by this new generation of Trujillos we see moving now.”

No doubt lineage is omnipresent in Randall’s writing —“I felt pushed to write by the fact I couldn’t hold many of these stories inside anymore”, he said—, but magic has also a strong presence, especially when he writes ction for kids. “ ere’s magic in every-

thing in D.R, there’s supernatural stories all around and under every tongue.”, he said. “I wanted Pilar’s magic to come from memory and be tied to her afrolatinidad. I write books for young people that bind magic and history because on the rare chance that we were learning something about Black folks or Latino folks in school it was always some massive pain or tragedy we had survived and I came to wonder if it was because our teachers couldn’t see our magic, our joys, our full whole lives. Magic to me is about making tangible what is intangible,” he concluded.

Whether it’s Poetry or Children’s books, Randall remembers clearly that the idea of becoming a writer began at college, when his best friend invited him to an open mic. “My plans to catch up on Breaking Bad and eat cocoa pu s had derailed moments earlier when I discovered my roommate had drunk up all the milk I’d been saving. So I say ‘Fine, I’ll slide to the poetry thing.’ And for the rst time I heard poems from people my own age, folks I knew were children of hip hop and called their ancestors ‘Abuela’ too,” he remembered. “I fell in love, I felt like I could be good at it and the more meetings I came to the more writing became my bridge to feeling like myself,” he concluded.z

ECONOMIC MOBILITY FOR ECUADORIAN CHILDREN

COLLEGE STUDENT NAYELI PICÓN DEVELOPED PROYECTO DALIA, AN EDUCATION NONPROFIT, FOR LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES.

LA ESTUDIANTE UNIVERSITARIA NAYELI PICÓN DESARROLLA EL PROYECTO DALIA, UNA ORGANIZACIÓN EDUCATIVA SIN ÁNIMO DE LUCRO PARA COMUNIDADES DE BAJOS INGRESOS.

Daughter to immigrant parents, an Ecuadorian father, and a Honduran mother, Nayeli Picón, a rst-generation student, is navigating academia while launching her educational nonpro t, Proyecto Dalia, which provides Ecuadorian low-income communities and children with educational opportunities that will lead to economic mobility.

Picón is a senior at La Salle University, double majoring in international business andnance. She is the president of the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS), which promotes Latin American cultural awareness and understanding, and is a member of the Business Fellows Leadership Program. e New York native got inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, La Salle’s international business honor society.

e Ecuadorian Honduran student secured her rst experience in corporate with an internship at Johnson & Johnson as a Global Functions Finance Co-Op.

Nayeli shares more of her story in an interview with AL DÍA.

LA SALLE

While in high school, Nayeli knew she wanted to pursue a business degree, and during her college selection process focused on universities with international business programs. La Salle was the rst college she visited, noticing she would thrive in a smaller setting, ultimately deciding to apply to the university because of its 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

“I feel like there was more diversity compared to the other schools I was looking to attend,” she admits, noting that you don’t need to know what career you want to pursue while in college, something she realized a er taking a few nance courses and deciding to take an additional major, nance.

As the president of OLAS, she focuses on promoting diversity and awareness on campus. is role has allowed her to develop leadership skills and learn her leadership style. OLAS is an inclusive organization that welcomes students willing to learn and celebrate Latino culture. She adds that those

interested in learning Spanish and want to practice their Spanish are welcome to join.

Nayeli is also a member of the Business Fellows Leadership Program, which allowed her to obtain her rst corporate experience as an intern at Johnson & Johnson. She applied for the internship during the pandemic and got to “experience a company culture where diversity is respected and celebrated,” assures Picón, who received an o er to extend her internship, which she accepted, working for J&J for a year. is internship reassured her that nance was the right career path for her, just not in healthcare.

“I enjoyed the learning opportunities and the connections I was able to make,” emphasized Nayeli, admitting she was inspired to start her nonpro t Proyecto Dalia because of her experience at J&J.

PROYECTO DALIA

Nayeli was inspired by her late grandmother, Elia, and her late cousin, Davis, both deceased due to cancer. She combined their names, creating Proyecto Dalia—inuenced by education advocate Elia’s legacy as an educator that provided education for low-income communities, she felt com-

I’ve seen the di erent realities that people or individuals have over there,” she explained. “I’ve always had this urge to do something bigger than just go, but try to help them in any way.”

In November 2022, Proyecto Dalia was set in motion partnering with di erent nonpro ts and organizations in Ecuador to render services from toy drives and health checks to providing meal kits. is allowed her to establish herself in di erent communities while trying to build a team to support her vision. Even though these services were not in the education realm, it allowed Picón to connect with low-income families and realize how imperative it was for her to support this community.

“I want to rst navigate and see what I need to learn about it and make connections,” she commented.

Nayeli envisions being able to nance low-income students’ school supplies, provide assistance to a ord school uniforms, and eventually facilitate high-quality education in Ecuador.

Picón is still in the early stages of her nonpro t but is working on establishing and acquiring U.S. sponsorships that will allow someone in the U.S. to sponsor a child in Ecuador. Although Ecuador has a public and private education system, with the public system being government funded and in poor conditions, she hopes to be able to transfer students to private schools where they can obtain a high-quality education and attain economic mobility.z

Such single Deposit shall be associated with the Auction held as of this date (“Auction Date”) and shall allow a bidder to bid on all of the properties that are listed on the Auction Date. The Deposit will be applied to the 10% down payment required for all purchased properties. If the Deposit exceeds the 10% down payment required for all purchased properties, the excess will be applied towards the total balance due. If the 10% down payment required for all purchased properties is greater than the $10,000.00 Deposit, the balance due to reach the 10% down payment amount is due by 5:00PM on the next business day after the auction date.

4. All properties are sold “AS IS” with NO expressed or implied warranties or guarantees whatsoever. The Sheriff and Bid4Assets shall not be liable as a result of any cause whatsoever for any loss or damage to the properties sold. The Upset Price is the least amount the plaintiff will accept for a property. The Sheriff’s costs will be added to the Upset Price to determine the reserve price for the auction. The reserve price is the minimum dollar amount the Sheriff will accept for the sale to go to a third-party bidder. Bidders will not know what the reserve price is, but they will see when the reserve price has been met.

9. If a bidder wins multiple properties and does not comply with the conditions of sale for each property he is deemed in Default and all of the consequences of a Default will apply.

10. The highest bidder shall be responsible for any and all post sale costs that are imposed by law,

The second bidder shall deposit 10% of the purchase price by 5:00PM EST on the first (1 st ) business day following the auction date. On that date the second bidder will be apprised of the status of the winning bidder’s deposit, and shall be told his/her 10% will be kept on deposit. The second bidder shall also be told he/ she is liable for the 90% balance fifteen (15) calendar days from this date, if the highest bidder does not comply. HOW TO EXERCISE GOOD FINANCIAL HEALTH CÓMO EJERCER UNA BUENA SALUD FINANCIERA

TOP FINANCIAL TIPS TO HELP ACHIEVE FINANCIAL FREEDOM AND BUILD GENERATIONAL WEALTH.

LOS MEJORES CONSEJOS FINANCIEROS PARA ALCANZAR LA LIBERTAD FINANCIERA Y CREAR BIENESTAR PARA GENERACIONES FUTURAS.

April is Financial Literacy Month – a perfect time to start building a foundation for a healthy nancial future. Good nancial health is the foundation on which strong and resilient households, communities and economies are built, but the reality is, many struggle to manage their nancial daily lives.

In recognition of Financial Literacy Month, Chandra Williams, Chase Community Manager at the West Philadelphia Community Center Bank Branch offered top nancial tips to help achieve nancial freedom and build generational wealth.

1. Small steps lead to bigger opportunities: No matter what amount of money you have, taking small steps towards building a solid nancial foundation is key. Whether it’s saving a little more each month, starting to save for the rst time or monitoring your credit score, these steps can help you prepare for the unexpected while setting you up for long-term success.

2. Establish good credit: The main elements of securing a good credit score include paying your bills on time, the length of time you’ve had a credit history, and the amount and type of accounts you have. Potential lenders will use this information to determine your credit risk. Managing your nances wisely will help you establish strong credit, a practice that will pay off when you want to make larger purchases like a car or a home.

3. Embrace digital tools: Apps, online goal sheets and budget builders are a great way to manage your nances. Look into what digital tools your nancial partner offers. Whether it’s credit and identify monitoring, or setting up repeating automatic transfers from your checking account to your savings ac-

count, these tools will help keep you on track with your payments and savings goals.

4. Include the whole family in the process: It’s never too early to get kids started on their nancial journey. Ask your bank about opening up a joint checking account geared towards children to help them establish good nancial habits. A joint account can offer features designed to help kids learn the importance of saving and meeting their nancial goals, whether it’s tracking their spending, creating recurring payments and setting spending limits, or being rewarded when completing chores and earning an allowance to deposit. Once your child understands the importance of saving the money they earn, they can begin to build savings habits that will last a lifetime.

5. Ask for help: Whether it’s meeting with a banker or talking to friends or family, conversations and advice can be critical to improving nancial health, from building a budget to more complex matters like saving for retirement.

6. Keep the conversation going: Talk with your partner or other family members regularly about your nancial goals and how you plan to achieve them, and check in with your children to discuss their nancial activity – whether it be what or where they’re spending, how much they’re earning, or their savings goal. These discussions all provide opportunities to keep money as part of your family conversations.

Establishing solid nancial habits can be a lifetime process, but it’s easier if you learn the fundamentals as early as possible. It’s never too early, or too late, to begin your journey, and this month is a great time to get started or recommit to your nancial health. For more nancial health tips, visit Chandra Williams at the Chase West Philadelphia Community Center Branch at 15 S. 52nd Street, and/or chase.com/ nancialgoals.z

The Motor City has re-emerged as a hip-hop powerhouse in recent years. Largely due to its street artists, and their laid-back portrayal of chasing money in Detroit’s unforgiving climate over fastpaced piano melodies and heavy 808s that captured the ear of rap fans across the globe. Now, virtually every charting rapper has hopped on a “Detroit-type beat,” and many have turned towards the city’s lyricists for collaborations.

Among the dozens of artists bubbling in the scene, BabyFace Ray stands out as the current face of Detroit rap. His 2022 albums FACE and MOB received critical acclaim, each one charting on the Billboard Top 100 while raking in millions of plays on streaming services. Publications including GQ, Complex, and Rolling Stone have deemed him the next rapper in line to reach superstardom.

Although Ray is currently branded as a new artist to keep an eye on, the 32-yearold rap-veteran’s career dates back to the mid 2000s. He was utilizing MySpace-era music-sharing platforms Soundclick and Crushpot while a member of the legendary rap-group Team Eastside. The devoted rapper continued releasing music throughout hip-hop’s dozens of sonic phases, honing his style in Detroit’s insular hip-hop community, while building a dedicated fanbase.

Babyface Ray’s unruf ed descriptions of life on the east side of Detroit allowed listeners to watch his maturation over the years as an artist and person. Projects like MIA Season Vol I and MIA Season Vol II, and the Last One Left solidi ed his status

Ahora,

as an underground legend by the end of the 2010s. Now, Ray has broken into the mainstream working with rap titans Future, Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T, and Lil Durk. However, he’s maintained rm roots in his city, continuing relationships with Detroit rap-pioneers Icewear Vezzo, 42 Dugg, GT, and Peezy.

The three remaining members of the original band — Julio Briceño, José Rafael Torres, and Juan Manuel — were joined by over 70 different collaborators for Cool Love, who are all displayed on the colorful album cover done by Venezuelan cartoonist Hermann Mejía.

Notable features include Betsayda Machado, El Pollo Brito, SuperThriller, C-Funk, Ferraz, and Álvaro Paiva-Bimbo. The collaborative nature of the project re ects the attitude Los Amigos Invisibles maintained throughout their career, connecting with artists in their native country and throughout the Latin American music community.

Although the band’s musical capabilities have been universally acknowledged, Los Amigos Invisibles may be best known for their live performances.

The night at the TLA will also include a special guest set from Veeze, who established a cult-like following in 2019 after releasing his rst and only project Navy Wavy. Many consider this tape one of the best to come from the contemporary Detroit rap scene. His unbothered delivery and effortless wordplay over dreamy production instantly won over listeners. Since then, Veeze has kept a distance from the spotlight, periodically releasing singles, as he builds anticipation for his follow-up project Ganger. Tracks like “Law And Order,” “Let It Fly,” and “A&W” showcase his magnetic personality and elite ear for beats. He’s also delivered show-stealing features on tracks alongside hip-hop heavyweights Lil Yachty, Lil Baby, and Pooh Shiesty.

They’ve toured in 60 different countries, playing at marquee venues throughout the world. The high-energy and audience-centered essence of their performances sets the band further apart from other groups. During an interview with La Musica en VIVO, frontman Briceño explained the emphasis they’ve put on live performances throughout their career.

“For us the live show was very important. More than the record,” he said, noting they give 110% on stage for every show.

Both Babyface Ray and Veeze are making signi cant strides in their careers while staying true to their Detroit roots. The duo bring a genuine rawness that accurately represents the promise of their city’s music to the Theater of Living Arts stage May 3. Concertgoers should expect to hear fan-favorites from both artist’s impressive discography, and their collaborative tracks

REPRESENTATION ON THE EXECUTIVE LEVEL

Despite making up 18.9% of the U.S. population, Latinos account for only around 5% of executives.

at disparity is something Torres believes needs to be addressed.

“We need to re ect the diversity of our customer base [and] the diversity of our employees. And so if you look at the broad demographic composition of the country…

A LATINO AND TOP COMCAST EXECUTIVE

it’s important to have that re ected in the executive ranks of companies,” Torres stated.

He added, “I also view myself as leaning into the e ort to make sure that we have good representation in the company from a Latino perspective at the manager and executive levels.”

His advice for people of color who want to go into sales or marketing is threefold; look for opportunities, apply for jobs, and be visible.z

REPRESENTACIÓN A NIVEL EJECUTIVO

Parker cited her PHL Taking Care of Business Program that she launched in 2019, which hires community members to clean their own communities.

“We’re gonna put it on steroids,” she said of the program if she’s mayor.

REPRESENTATION AND PRESERVING HISTORY

When it came to representation, every candidate on stage said they would work to make sure their administrations had adequate representation compared to the demographics of the city, especially Latinos. However, only Deleon, Brown and Bloom named speci c

Latinos they would appoint to their cabinets. Bloom and Brown went with Quiñones Sánchez — who would later call it “insulting” — and Deleon named Captain Javier Rodriguez.

Similar unanimity, except for Oh, was shown when asked whether the candidates would designate parts of Latino North Philadelphia as historic cultural districts to preserve the history.

“If this is rst, then in the next four years, hopefully we’ll have three or four with di erent organizations with di erent focuses,” said Rev. Luis Cortes about the forum. “ is particular election is going to be close, so the 12-15,000 Latino votes are going to be a signi cant part of the outcome.” z

Leyba-Martinez also supported the Spanish translation of all school board meetings. Outside of the school board, he

“What would make me feel the best about all of this is motivating more people to do the same,” he continued. “When they feel that they want to be the person leading their city, they step up and do it.” z

MARÍA WAS THE AL DÍA MODEL

REFLECTION ON THE END OF AN ERA FOR PHILADELPHIA POLITICS AFTER THE RETIREMENT OF MARIA QUIÑONES.

REFLEXIÓN SOBRE EL FIN DE UNA ERA EN LA POLÍTICA DE FILADELFIA, CON LA RENUNCIA DE MARÍA QUIÑONES SÁNCHEZ A LA CANDIDATURA A LA ALCALDÍA.

On Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, Philadelphia lost the chance to have its rst Latina mayor as María Quiñones Sánchez became the rst major Democratic candidate to drop out of the hotly-contested race.

As she told the Philadelphia Inquirer, “the obnoxious, obscene amount of money that is shaping the race just got away from us.”

A week earlier, the April campaignnance reports came out for all the candidates, and Quiñones Sánchez was one of two at the bottom of the pack with just under $800,000 raised. Only Derek Green had raised less, and he also dropped out shortly a er Quiñones Sánchez.

All other Democratic candidates brought in north of $1 million, either through grassroots e orts, PACs or self funding.

Still, her fellow competitors were sure to keep her name alive during last week’s mayoral forums — citing her recently-released Agenda Latina or celebrating her 14 years of public service, to name a few of the mentions.

ey were absolutely courting her for an endorsement, which she hasn’t revealed yet, but to reduce María’s impact to a short, 30-second answer at a forum, a two-paragraph tweet, or even a 500-word op-ed like this is not capable of telling her full legacy.

It’s not done being built — don’t get us wrong — she will be back in another leadership role shortly within Philadelphia or the region, but for now, Quiñones Sánchez deserves to re ect on what was transformative service to her district and the city as a whole.

Who better to re ect on that than the publication that’s featured her on its cover more than any other leader in its almost 30year history?

For AL DÍA, María Quiñones Sánchez epitomized — as a young community journalist and a seasoned citywide leader — the kind of story and journey that it still tries to

celebrate and will continue to as long as it still prints editions or maintains a website.

María was the AL DÍA model.

She was born in the community, raised in that community, elevated to become one of its leaders, and maintained a ghting spirit for it through every cathartic victory and crushing defeat.

ose ghts spanned from the streets of North Philadelphia to City Hall.

And we’re also not just talking about the Philadelphia Latino community that Quiñones Sánchez called home.

Sure, she was the community’s only (and rst Latina) voice on City Council for 14 years, beating the Democratic establishment’s e orts to upend her every step of the way. But as she grew in City Council and became more calculated with her ghts, she realized the similarities more than the di erences between neighborhoods like her own and those across Philadelphia.

Her perspective was rooted in the Latino experience, but wise to realize that no matter the issue, it wasn’t always just a Latino experience. And as she fought for issues pertinent to her Latino community and advocated for its betterment, the city as a whole would follow on that same path of progress and improvement.

at mission is carried on today by those following in her footsteps at City Hall, but also by anyone inspired by Quiñones Sánchez’s story — whether we told it or not (we probably did).

So thank you María for allowing us to follow your journey this far and we can’t wait to hear about what’s next!z
