O

n the surface, the worlds of journalism and health may not seem that alike, but the goal of both is to serve the communities where they’re based.

For AL DÍA Health Archetype Dr. Ana Diez Roux, the Dean of the Dornslife School of Public Health at Drexel University, her entire career in medicine has revolved around identifying barriers to health in neighborhoods across the U.S. Those barriers could include everything from racial segregation to a lack of trust found throughout one’s environment.

“When we think about improving health, we need to think about not just health care… but also about the environments that people are living in,” Diez Roux told AL DÍA. Once identified, the next step of her work is to be an advocate.

Backed by science, Diez Roux becomes an integral part of the discussion around these disparities and begins the process of bridging them.

She told AL DÍA that this part is also

ENGLISH the one most important for students at Drexel, who often partner with community organizations in Philly to start the discussion.

Starting discussions is also at the root of Media Archetype Gabriel Escobar’s mission as top editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer.

As the first Latino top editor in the paper’s history, Escobar took the position at a time where news media became a lifeline. He called the efforts of his staff over the past year and a half nothing short of “heroic,” as COVID-19 ebbed and flowed, George Floyd’s murder sparked nationwide fervor, and of late, Hurricane Ida flooded Philadelphia.

He also rose at a time when more voices demanded to be part of the newsroom discussion. That’s a generational fix, but one Escobar is starting to lead at the Inquirer.

Whether it be through the daily news cycle or identifying health disparities, the final two archetypes of AL DÍA’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration play integral roles in shaping the city.

n la superficie, los mundos del periodismo y la salud pueden no parecer muy iguales, pero el objetivo de ambos es el mismo: servir a las comunidades en las que se encuentran.

Nombrada Arquetipo de AL DÍA en la categoría de salud, la Dra. Ana Diez Roux, decana de la Escuela de Salud Pública Dornslife de la Universidad de Drexel, asegura que toda su carrera en Medicina ha girado en torno a la identificación de barreras a la salud en vecindarios de todo EE.UU. Esas barreras pueden ser de todo tipo, desde segregación racial hasta falta de confianza en el entorno en el que uno habita.

“Cuando pensamos en mejorar la salud, no solo debemos pensar en la atención médica... sino también en los entornos en los que vive la gente”, dijo Diez Roux a AL DÍA. Una vez identificada la barrera, el siguiente paso de su trabajo es luchar para eliminarla.

Respaldada por la ciencia, Diez Roux es hoy una parte integral del debate sobre estas disparidades y el inicio del proceso para salvarlas.

La reconocida doctora de origen latino confesó a AL DÍA que esto es algo que también tienen muy presente los estudiantes de Drexel, quienes a menudo se asocian con organizaciones comu-

nitarias en Filadelfia para iniciar el debate.

Iniciar el debate está también en la raíz de la misión de nuestro Arquetipo en la categoría de Medios, Gabriel Escobar, editor jefe del Philadelphia Inquirer.

Como el primer editor jefe latino en la historia del periódico, Escobar asumió el cargo en un momento en que los medios de comunicación se convirtieron en un salvavidas. Escobar ha descrito los esfuerzos llevados por su equipo durante el último año y medio como “heroicos”, ya que tuvieron que lidiar con fenómenos únicos como la pandemia de COVID-19, el asesinato de George Floyd, que despertó el fervor en todo el país y, recientemente, las inundaciones provocadas por el huracán Ida en Filadelfia.

A

Latina historian dedicated to keeping alive the narratives of long-dead victims of racial violence along the Texas-Mexico border is one of 2021’s MacArthur fellows and the recipient of a “genius grant.”

Monica Muñoz Martinez, a historian at the University of Texas-Austin, was recognized partly due to her book, The Injustice Never Leaves You: Anti-Mexican Violence in Texas, which is about the hundreds of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans slaughtered by vigilantes and Texas Rangers about a century ago.

The historian was born and raised in the South Texas town of Uvalde, and now at 37, she is one of the world’s top experts on the subject of racial violence history along the Texas-Mexico border.

Learning Lost History It wasn’t until she attended Brown University as an ethnic studies major that she truly explored the Chicano rights movement, the history of segregated schools in Uvalde, and the tenacious activists of her own community.

In addition to teaching history at UT-Austin, Martinez is also the founding member of the nonprofit Refusing to Forget, an award-winning public history project committed to sharing the history of state-sanctioned violence against Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in Texas.

In a 2019 interview with NBC News, Martinez explained that these perpetrators were able to carry out the violence with impunity and a cloak of legal authority because much of it was sanctioned by the state government, and executed by U.S. soldiers and local law enforcement.

The case cited most often occurred in 1918 in Presidio County, southeast of El Paso County, and is referred to as the Porvenir massacre Texas Rangers working with ranchers raided the Mexican-American community of Porvenir in the middle of the night, separated men and boys from their families and killed them while they were under arrest and in the Rangers’ custody, Martinez said.

Martinez said that at the time, the media depicted the victims as criminals, squatters and bandits, despite the fact that they were simply ranchers and farmers. There were never any prosecutions.

El caso más citado ocurrió en 1918 en el condado de Presidio, al sureste del condado de El Paso, y se conoce como la masacre del Porvenir Los Rangers de Texas, en colaboración con los rancheros, irrumpieron en la comunidad mexicano-americana de Porvenir en medio de la noche, separaron a los hombres y niños de sus familias y los mataron mientras estaban arrestados y bajo la custodia de los Rangers, dijo Martínez.

Martínez dijo que, en aquel momento, los medios de comunicación presentaron a las víctimas como delincuentes, ocupantes ilegales y bandidos, a pesar de que eran simples ganaderos y agricultores. Nunca hubo ningún proceso judicial.

n Tuesday, Oct. 5, former Facebook employee Frances Haugen appeared before the Senate Commerce subcommittee to talk about how the company has set aside its responsibility to users to profit from sensitive issues such as teen mental health and privacy.

Haugen appeared before Congress with internal documents she obtained before leaving the company in May, and with which she had already filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission, pointing out that Facebook withheld information from shareholders on issues such as teen mental health and human trafficking.

For Senators Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Haugen's statements will be of great importance in the investigation being conducted on the social media giant for hiding studies that show that social media, espe-

ENGLISH cially Instagram, have an effect on the mental health of teenagers — an issue that Congress has been investigating for the past months.

At a press conference after the hearing, Blumenthal asked Mark Zuckerberg to appear before the committee if he believes there are any inaccuracies in Haugen's testimony, and that he has a "public responsibility to answer these questions."

"Mark Zuckerberg may be one of the richest people in the history of the world, but today Frances Haugen showed that one person can stand up to that kind of power and make a difference,” the senator said.

While the senators and a number of people in the general public see Haugen as a heroine for daring to talk about issues Facebook has sworn to secrecy, inside the company, many have tried to undercut her claims, saying she had an intermediate position and

Facebook spokeswoman Lena Pietsch hit back at lawmakers by stating that: "Despite all this, we agree on one thing; it’s time to begin to create standard rules for the internet. It’s been 25 years since the rules for the internet have been updated, and instead of expecting the industry to make societal decisions that belong to legislators, it is time for Congress to act."

Likewise, to the company's employees, Haugen is either a hero or a vin-

dictive former employee who is taking advantage of a situation. According to the New York Times, some workers also believe this kind of scrutiny is good for Facebook, as it forces it to work on such sensitive issues rather than hiding them and handling them internally.

HAUGEN'S REVELATIONS

While what Haugen said before Congress had already been widely discussed, her testimony is evidence of Facebook's intentional hiding of information.

B

etween Wednesday, Oct. 6 and Thursday, Oct. 7, Voto Latino, the grassroots political organization focused on empowering a new generation of Latinx voters, held their 13th annual Power Summit.

In 2020, Latinos showed up to the ballots in record numbers, as over 16.4 million cast their votes, according to a City University of New York study. The number of Hispanic registered voters grew by 22.6% from 2016 to 2020 and the Latino vote increased by 29.8% during that time.

Latinx youth played a crucial role in the election turnout. For the first time, over half of all eligible Latinos voted in 2020 and the highest turnout rate was among young people, according to Voto Latino. Around 34% of them voted for the first time.

The Voto Latino Power Summit was a two-day free to attend virtual conference, packed with industry leaders, celebrities, and elected officials to speak on the importance of equity and making one’s voice heard, especially during times of increased attempts at voter suppression.

Among the speakers are Vice President Kamala Harris, actress Melissa Barrera, political leader Stacey Abrams, activist Dolores Huerta, and more.

HARRIS OPENS THE SHOW

Harris delivered the opening remarks on Wednesday, urging Congress to act on voting rights bills, in the wake of Florida and Texas passing restrictive voting laws that Democrats claim will suppress voter turnout.

“They saw how many people voted by mail in 2020 — and they are working to cut back drop boxes. They saw how many

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, signed an extensive bill in September after fighting with Democrats for months.

In May, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, also a Republican, signed voting legislation that restricts voting by mail and at drop boxes.

This law sparked three separate lawsuits from the League of Women Voters in Florida, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Demos.

On Tuesday, Sept. 14, a group of eight Democratic senators introduced the Freedom to Vote Act, which focuses on expanding voter access, boosting election integrity and encouraging civil participation.

House Democrats have passed two other bills, the For the People Act, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, but

ealth is one of the most critical elements of life, as without health, it is very difficult to function effectively in the many components of everyday life.

While there are various components leading to healthy and sustainable lives, there are also many factors that play a role — negatively and positively — in a person’s health.

Throughout her professional career, Dr. Ana Diez Roux has been a key leader in public health, studying and addressing social determinants and the effects neighborhoods have on health.

Given the number of roles and titles she presently holds — Dana and David Dornsife Dean and Distinguished University Professor of Epidemiology at the Dornsife School of Public Health of Drexel University, and Director of the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative among them — Dr. Diez Roux is able to be very involved, becoming a strong and influential voice on the matter.

“My interest in public health has been largely around how social, economic and environmental factors affect health and generate health inequities between groups of people,” Dr. Diez Roux said in an interview with AL DÍA. Her interest started fairly early in her professional training, and progressed as did her desire to make a larger impact for her and her community. Since realizing that interest, she has spent the majority of her career working to address those very factors.

A WELL-TRAVELED CHILDHOOD

Throughout the duration of her youth, Dr. Diez Roux spent parts of her life living in three different countries.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, her father, who worked at a university, moved his family first to Venezuela as a result of his work and a complicated political situation in Argentina.

At the age of seven, the family moved to the United States, where Dr. Diez Roux lived in Lexington, Massachusetts for five years.

Then when she was 12, she and her family returned to Argentina’s capital where she attended high school and obtained her university education.

ENGLISH Spending a handful of her years in both Argentina and the United States has made her feel deeply connected to both nations, as she was often, as she described, “in between countries.”

While in Argentina, Dr. Diez Roux studied medicine and received her training as a pediatrician at one of only two pediatric hospitals in Buenos Aires.

In addition to working at the hospital, she and the other pediatricians would rotate work at health centers, often located in the more impoverished and economically disadvantaged areas of the city.

That experience prompted her to gain a more specific interest in public health, as the reality and impact she could potentially make became more clear.

“I realized that there was so much that doctors couldn’t really address in people’s lives that have to do with their health,” she said.

As a pediatrician, she could treat certain ailments, often just temporarily, but not directly address the fundamental causes that drive those health ailments.

After that realization, Dr. Diez Roux gravitated toward public health, leading to her eventual return to the U.S. to pursue a graduate degree in the field.

PURSUING THE PUBLIC HEALTH PATH

Once her decision was made, Dr. Diez Roux started applying to graduate schools in public health in the U.S. She earned a scholarship and enrolled at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, to pursue a graduate degree in public health.

The reality of moving between countries and continents at a young age proved quite beneficial as she seeked to obtain higher education opportunities.

Si bien hay varios componentes que conducen a una vida sana y sostenible, existen también muchos factores que juegan un papel —negativa y positivamente — en la salud de una persona.

A lo largo de su carrera profesional, la Dra. Ana Diez Roux ha sido una líder clave en el ámbito de la salud pública, estudiando y abordando los determinantes sociales y los efectos que los barrios tienen sobre la salud.

Dada la cantidad de roles y títulos que ocupa actualmente —Decana Dana y David Dornsife, Profesora Universitaria Distinguida de Epidemiología en la Escuela de Salud Pública Dornsife de la Universidad de Drexel y Directora del Colaborativo de Salud Urbana de Drexel, entre ellos —, la Dra. Diez Roux está muy involucrada en el ámbito de la salud pública, convirtiéndose en una voz fuerte e influyente al respecto.

“Mi interés en la salud pública se ha centrado principalmente en cómo los aspectos sociales, económicos y medioambientales afectan la salud y generan inequidades en salud entre grupos de personas ”, dijo la Dra. Diez Roux en una entrevista con AL DÍA. Su interés por el tema comenzó al principio de su formación profesional y progresó al mismo ritmo que su deseo de tener un mayor impacto en su comunidad. Desde que se dio cuenta de ese interés, ha pasado la mayor parte de su carrera trabajando para abordar esos mismos factores.

UNA INFANCIA MUY VIAJADA

A lo largo de su juventud, la Dra. Diez Roux tuvo la oportunidad de vivir en tres países diferentes.

A la edad de siete años, la familia se mudó a los Estados Unidos, y la Dra. Diez Roux vivió durante cinco años en Lexington, Massachusetts.

Luego, con 12 años, ella y su familia regresaron a la capital de Argentina, donde asistió a la escuela secundaria y obtuvo su educación universitaria.

Los años vividos en Argentina y Estados Unidos han hecho de ella una persona profundamente conectada a ambas naciones, una persona “entre países”, como ella misma dijo sentirse.

Al ser consciente de esto, la Dra. Diez Roux decidió gravitar hacia la salud pública, lo que la llevó a un eventual regreso a los EE. UU. para obtener un título de posgrado en este campo.

UNA CARRERA EN SALUD PÚBLICA

Una vez tomada la decisión, la Dra. Diez Roux comenzó a postularse para diferentes escuelas de posgrado en salud pública de EE.UU. Obtuvo una beca y se inscribió en la Escuela de Higiene y Salud Pública de la Universidad Johns Hopkins, en Baltimore, Maryland, para obtener un título de posgrado en salud pública.

in the United States, I knew how to speak English very well and when it became time to think about where I could get training in public health, it was easy for me to think about coming back to the United States to graduate school because there were many opportunities here,” said Dr. Diez Roux.

Together with a group of medical residents, they’d often organize meetings and invite sociologists, anthropologists, community leaders and nonprofit representatives to discuss health issues facing their communities.

“As part of that, I became more aware that there was so much more that we could do, and that I needed to get my training in public health,” she added.

While attending Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Diez Roux also developed an interest in public health research, accentuating her later decision to pursue a doctorate at the university, as well.

It was at that time that she became drawn to the field of epidemiology; the study and analysis of the distribution, patterns and determinants of health and disease conditions in defined populations.

“I was very interested in understanding how social and economic things affect health,” said Dr. Diez Roux.

“So epidemiology is a perfect tool for that because you can study differences in health across different population groups and… what we can do to [create] change,” she added.

SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF POPULATION HEALTH

Some of her work in the public health sphere include looking at how neighborhoods affect people’s health, developing mechanisms on how to change neighborhood environments and health outcomes, and collecting and analyzing data to understand patterns of evidence within those neighborhoods.

“It’s very interdisciplinary,” Dr. Diez Roux said of her work. “It integrates things from sociology, from psychology, from medicine, from biology… to understand what the main drivers of health are.”

Throughout her career, she has been able to work with and learn from teams of individuals from diverse backgrounds, which, she said, has made “an enormous difference in the work that we were able to do.”

This also led to her role as Principal Investigator of SALURBAL (Salud Urbana en América Latina) study, which focuses on the factors impacting residents throughout Latin America.

Whether it pertains to issues of transportation, air quality, segregation, or access to healthy foods, those are common challenges that populations face across the globe.

Therefore, the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative has been able to analyze those challenges within those areas and work to find ways to address them.

“It’s really important to think about how we can design and manage and govern cities so that they can promote health and also protect the environment,” said Dr. Diez Roux.

Dr. Diez Roux joined the Drexel University faculty in 2014, after stints at Columbia University and the University of Michigan.

One of the focuses of her work has been understanding how race and ethnicity plays a role in impacting population health. The topics of race and ethnicity then branch out to other factors, such as residential segregation, class, economic status, acculturation and more — all critical determinants of health.

The work is done through both a physical and societal environmental lens, and aims to unpack the systemic structures that pave the way for these realities impacting health and, in turn, creates these disparities.

“When we think about improving health, we need to think about not just health care…but also about the environments that people are living in,” said Dr. Diez Roux.

MANY DIFFERENT HATS

After stints working on the faculties of Columbia University and the University of Michigan, where she was Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Director of the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, Dr. Diez Roux joined the Drexel University staff in 2014.

She is currently the Dean and Distinguished University Professor of Epide-

miology at the Dornsife School of Public Health at the university.

As Dean, her goal is to provide students with the tools and skills to think critically about health, and the factors most important to health by relying on scientific evidence.

“Because the foundation of public health is science,” she said.

She also wants those students to be able to partner with communities, nonprofits and stakeholders to work effectively in teams, and become advocates and key voices for public health and society.

“So much of public health is related to the way society is organized,” said Dr. Diez Roux, noting the broader public societal discussions pertaining to the economy, social policy, and issues such as climate change, inequity and racism and seeing how those factors connect to health.

Dr. Diez Roux is also the Director of the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative, where she is able to expand that work more globally.

In this role, she has been able to focus on health in the more urbanized cities across the U.S., Latin America and beyond, and generate a broader understanding about the factors that play a role in public health in those areas, and develop ways to

A HEALTHY LEGACY OF GLOBAL IMPACT

The pandemic has brought out many challenges. However, one silver lining in it lies on the fact that it helped shine a light on the underlying health inequities that have been prevalent for decades, bringing epidemiology to the forefront.

“COVID, by highlighting those things, gave us the opportunity to speak about the health implications of systemic factors like racism and economic inequalities more forcefully,” said Dr. Diez Roux.

The work has continued all throughout the pandemic.

When asked what she believes is the most fulfilling part of her work, Dr. Diez Roux said it’s the opportunity to work with young people and, “seeing them carry forward new ideas, new and critical ways of thinking about the world and what we can do to make it healthier.”

Having the opportunity to see the younger generation of diverse backgrounds come together and work in unison to achieve a common goal adds more purpose to her work.

On a more personal level, if there is one end goal to the decades of work she has put into the cause of addressing population health, it’s that, and also to make a profound positive impact for individuals and communities alike.

“I hope that I have helped create environments where everyone can develop and thrive and where people from many different backgrounds can come together, findcommonalities and work together on a shared mission,” she said.

salud pública, fue fácil decidirme por los Estados Unidos, ya que aquí había muchas oportunidades”, comentó la Dra. Diez Roux.

Junto con un grupo de médicos residentes, a menudo organizaban reuniones e invitaban a sociólogos, antropólogos, líderes comunitarios y representantes de organizaciones sin fines de lucro para discutir los problemas de salud que enfrentan sus comunidades.

“Me di cuenta de que podíamos hacer mucho más, y que necesitaba capacitarme en salud pública ”, agregó.

Mientras estudiaba en la Universidad Johns Hopkins, la Dra. Diez Roux también desarrolló un interés por la investigación en salud pública, acentuando su decisión posterior de realizar un Doctorado en la misma universidad.

Fue en ese momento cuando se sintió atraída por el campo de la Epidemiología; el estudio y análisis de la distribución, patrones y determinantes de las condiciones de salud y enfermedad en poblaciones definidas.

“Me interesaba mucho comprender cómo los aspectos sociales y económicos afectan la salud”, dijo la Dra. Diez Roux.

“La epidemiología es una herramienta perfecta para eso, porque puedes estudiar las diferencias en salud entre diferentes grupos de población y... qué podemos hacer para generar cambios “, añadió.

como segregación residencial, clase social, situación económica, aculturación y más: todos ellos determinantes críticos de la salud.

El trabajo se realiza bajo una lente ambiental tanto física como social, y tiene como objetivo desempaquetar las estructuras sistémicas que allanan el camino para estas realidades que impactan la salud y, a su vez, crea estas disparidades.

“Cuando pensamos en mejorar la salud, debemos pensar no solo en la atención médica… sino también en los entornos en los que vive la gente”, dijo la Dra. Diez Roux.

MUCHOS SOMBREROS DIFERENTES

Después de trabajar en las facultades de la Universidad de Columbia y la Universidad de Michigan, donde fue presidenta del Departamento de Epidemiología y directora del Centro de Epidemiología Social y Salud de la Población, la Dra. Diez Roux se unió al equipo de la Universidad de Drexel en 2014.

Actualmente es Decana y Profesora Universitaria Distinguida de Epidemiología en la Escuela de Salud Pública Dornsife de la universidad.

Como decana, su objetivo es proporcionar a los estudiantes las herramientas y habilidades para pensar críticamente sobre la salud y los factores más importantes

que afectan a ésta, basándose en la evidencia científica.

“Porque la base de la salud pública es la ciencia”, dijo.

Uno de sus objetivos es que sus estudiantes puedan asociarse con comunidades, organizaciones sin fines de lucro y otros grupos de interés para que trabajen eficazmente en equipo y se conviertan en defensores y voces clave de la salud pública y la sociedad.

“Gran parte de la salud pública está relacionada con la forma en que está organizada la sociedad”, dijo la Dra. Diez Roux, destacando las discusiones sociales públicas cada vez más amplias relacionadas con la economía, política y temas como el cambio climático, la inequidad y el racismo, y ver cómo esos factores se relacionan con la salud.

La Dra. Diez Roux también es directora de Drexel Urban Health Collaborative, donde tiene la oportunidad de expandir su trabajo a nivel global.

Bajo este cargo, ha podido centrarse en la salud en las ciudades más urbanizadas de todo EE. UU., América Latina y más allá, y generar una comprensión más amplia sobre los factores que desempeñan un papel en la salud pública en esas áreas, y desarrollar formas de reducir las inequidades y los desafíos que enfrentan esas comunidades.

DETERMINANTES SOCIALES DE LA SALUD DE LA POBLACIÓN

Algunos de sus trabajos en la esfera de la salud pública incluyen analizar cómo los vecindarios afectar la salud de las personas, desarrollando mecanismos sobre cómo cambiar el entorno y el nivel de salud de un vecindario, y la recopilación y análisis de datos para comprender patrones de evidencia dentro de esos vecindarios.

“Es muy interdisciplinario”, dijo la Dra. Diez Roux sobre su trabajo. “Integra aspectos de sociología, psicología, medicina, biología... para entender cuáles son los principales impulsores de la salud”.

A lo largo de su carrera, ha podido trabajar y aprender de equipos de personas de diversos orígenes, lo que, logró marcar “una enorme diferencia en el trabajo que pudimos hacer”, explicó.

Ya sean cuestiones de transporte, calidad del aire, segregación o acceso a alimentos saludables, se trata de desafíos comunes a los que se enfrentan las poblaciones en todo el mundo.

Por tanto, Drexel Urban Health Collaborative ha podido analizar aquellos desafíos dentro de esas áreas y trabajar para encontrar formas de abordarlos.

“Es muy importante pensar en cómo podemos diseñar, gestionar y gobernar ciudades para que puedan promover la salud y también proteger el medio ambiente”, dijo la Dra. Diez Roux.

UN LEGADO SALUDABLE CON IMPACTO GLOBAL

La pandemia ha planteado muchos desafíos. Sin embargo, hay un lado positivo en el hecho de que ayudó a arrojar luz sobre las inequidades sanitarias subyacentes que han prevalecido durante décadas, llevando la epidemiología a la vanguardia.

“El COVID, al resaltar esas cosas, nos dio la oportunidad de hablar con más contundencia sobre las implicaciones para la salud de factores sistémicos como el racismo y las desigualdades económicas”, explicó la Dra. Diez Roux.

Su labor ha continuado durante toda la pandemia.

Cuando se le preguntó cuál cree que es la parte más satisfactoria de su trabajo, la Dra. Diez Roux dijo que es la oportunidad de trabajar con los jóvenes y “verlos llevar adelante nuevas ideas, formas nuevas y críticas de pensar sobre el mundo y lo que podemos hacer para que sea más saludable”.

Tener la oportunidad de ver a las generaciones más jóvenes con orígenes diversos unirse y trabajar al unísono para lograr un objetivo común da todavía más sentido a su trabajo.

En un nivel más personal, si hay un objetivo final tras las décadas de trabajo que ha dedicado la Dra. Diez Roux a la causa, sería lograr un profundo impacto positivo, tanto en las personas como en las comunidades.

“Espero haber ayudado a crear entornos en los que todos puedan desarrollarse y prosperar y donde personas de diferentes orígenes puedan reunirse, encontrar puntos en común y trabajar juntos en una misión compartida ”, concluyó.

hiladelphia Inquirer top editor Gabriel Escobar got into journalism on a whim.

For the longest time, he thought a future in creative writing would be his calling card — poetry to be more specific.

At Queens College, where he graduated with a degree in creative writing, he read canon writers like Keats, Aulden, and Plath. Before that, in high school, Escobar was fond of writers like Beckett and Hemingway. There was even Faulkner, who he read for the first time during a brief, three-month trip across his home country of Colombia after he got his Master’s in journalism from the University of Maryland.

Escobar now recalls that bringing Faulkner to read on the trip a “mistake.”

“I had a great time, but I didn’t write a single word that meant anything,” he said.

His poet dreams built and fizzled out over the nine years he spent working for the New York Public Library from high school up until two years after he graduated from Queens.

The branch closest to his family’s home in Jackson Heights was a haven for him and his brothers growing up. They would go every Saturday to check out books and it’s where Escobar first discovered his love of reading and writing.

CLEMENCIA BUCKS THE FAMILY

Him and his three brothers first moved to Jackson Heights from Bogotá, Colombia with his mother, Clemencia.

The decision was made after his father died, and when she decided to want no part of the upper middle class life she was reared in.

“She took a significant risk,” said Escobar.

“Do not let pride prevent you from coming back if you do not succeed,” Escobar’s uncle wrote to his daughter not long after her flight to America.

Escobar himself was seven when first coming to the States. Most of his memories are second-hand from his older brother, but he does remember his mother saying that their first day of school at P.S. 69 in Jackson Heights was the hardest of her life.

“That morning, whatever September morning that was, she was dropping off her two oldest kids in a place that was OCTOBER 13 - 20, 2021

ENGLISH completely alien to her and obviously alien to us,” he said. “And maybe in that moment, she realized the enormity of her decision.”

His mother’s only request of her children was to do well in school and succeed. It led to them all being extremely focused.

AN ASPIRING POET

A young Gabriel excelled especially in his English and literature classes, and it picked up even more when he started working at the New York Public Library in high school.

There, not only was he able to read on the job, but he also fell in with the crowd of aspiring writers that also worked there as information specialists.

“It was such an interesting crop of people,” said Escobar. “I absolutely loved working there.”

But after nine years, he hit a critical juncture. At the highest position he could be without a Master’s degree, the New York Public Library System offered to pay for his continued studies at Columbia University in library science.

“I thought to myself: ‘I’ve been here nine years, am I really going to spend the next 30 or 40 years here?’” said Escobar.

He applied to journalism school instead, arriving at the University of Maryland just as a transformative dean also came to the school and overhaul its journalism program.

Escobar graduated before any of the dean’s efforts bore fruit, meaning he had no news clips to work with when applying for jobs. All he had was a thesis.

A LITTLE HELP FROM P.S. 69

Durante mucho tiempo, pensó que su futuro estaba en la escritura creativa, la poesía, para ser más específicos.

Cuando estudiaba en Queens College, donde se graduó con un título en escritura creativa, leyó a escritores canónicos como Keats, Aulden y Plath. “Ella tomó un riesgo significativo”, dijo Escobar.

“No dejes que el orgullo te impida regresar si no tienes éxito”, le escribió el tío de Escobar a su hija poco después de que volaran a América.

Escobar tenía siete años cuando llegó por primera vez a Estados Unidos. La mayoría de sus recuerdos los toma prestados de su hermano mayor, aunque recuerda a su madre diciendo que su primer día de escuela en la P.S. 69 de Jackson Heights fue el más difícil de su vida.

“Esa mañana de septiembre dejaba a sus dos hijos mayores en un lugar completamente extraño para ella y obviamente extraño para nosotros”, dijo. “Y tal vez en ese momento, se dio cuenta de la enormidad de su decisión”.

La única petición de su madre fue que les fuera bien en la escuela y que tuvieran éxito. Y eso los llevó a estar extremadamente concentrados.

UN ASPIRANTE A POETA

El joven Gabriel sobresalió especialmente en las clases de inglés y literatura, y mejoró aún más cuando comenzó a trabajar en la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York durante la escuela secundaria.

El trabajo no solo le permitía leer, sino también unirse a la multitud de aspirantes a escritores que también trabajaban allí como especialistas en información.

“Fue una cosecha de gente muy interesante”, dijo Escobar. “Me encantó trabajar allí”.

Pero después de nueve años, se encontró con una coyuntura crítica. Cuando alcanzó la posición más alta que podría estar sin una maestría, el Sistema de Bibliotecas Públicas de Nueva York se ofreció a pagar sus estudios de posgrado en biblioteconomía en la Universidad de Columbia.

“Me dije a mí mismo: ‘He estado aquí nueve años, ¿realmente voy a pasarme también los próximos 30 o 40?’”, dijo Escobar.

Así que optó por aplicar en la escuela de periodismo, y llegó a la Universidad de Maryland justo cuando un decano transformador también tomaba las riendas de la escuela y revisaba su programa de periodismo.

As a test, Escobar was sent to cover an event protesting the U.S.’s involvement in El Salvador’s Civil War held at his alma mater, Queens College.

“I had never done anything like that, not even in journalism school,” he said.

“I went there, I sat in the back. I took notes, didn’t speak to anybody, went back home, wrote it out long-hand, then typed it and then sent it.”

Escobar was hired shortly after.

LEARNING JOURNALISM THE CRAFT

From there, Escobar would go one to report at papers like the Hudson Dispatch, the Hartford Courant, and then the Philadelphia Daily News before landing at the Washington Post.

All along the way, he took lessons from the practice of journalism.

“Journalism really is a craft, and it’s one of those few professions… that you actually learn on the job,” said Escobar.

“You can go to journalism school and they can teach you the basics, but you become good incrementally by doing it.”

At the Hudson Dispatch, Escobar said he learned how to become an expert on a subject through reporting — in his case it was housing. He also learned from his interactions with the large Cuban population in Union City, New Jersey, the importance of drawing a line with sources, especially those he could connect with in Spanish.

In Philadelphia, he was captured by both its history and neighborhoods.

“The city seemed enormous to me, even though I grew up in New York. I think one reason why it seemed so big is because it was so many cities in one,” said Escobar.

When he joined The Post, he first rose to become the bureau chief in Latin America, exposing him more to the diversity of that part of the world.

“If you think it is unified by language and unified by religion, it is different and divided in many more ways,” said Escobar.

The Post also gave him his first taste of editing, which he did as the city editor for six years between 1999 and 2005. In his time in that role, he led coverage of major stories like 9/11 and the D.C. snipers.

TWO TOURS IN PHILLY

From there, he went to the Pew Research Center for almost two years before starting his first tour as an editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2007.

He came at a time when the paper was struggling financially. A new digital landscape was overrunning the traditional print business, and newsroom leaders were scrambling and cutting their way to financial viability.

Escobar left a few months before the Inquirer moved from its historic home on Broad and Callowhill to its current one on Eighth and Market. He went to Dallas, where he would teach journalism at SMU and write as a columnist at the Dallas Morning News.

He returned to Philadelphia in 2012 as a deputy editor and then rose to be managing editor in 2015.

TOP EDITOR IN A CHALLENGING YEAR

Escobar was named the top editor in November 2020 in the aftermath of the

paper’s “Buildings Matter, Too” controversy, which compared Black and Brown lives to buildings during 2020’s George Floyd protests, and led to the resignation of former top editor, Stan Wischnowski.

The controversy required the paper and its leadership to do some soul-searching and come up with clear, define-able goals for diversity, equity and inclusion both in the newsroom and its coverage.

Those goals have been Escobar’s to carry out. He for one, said he’s firm believer that there’s a correlation between

the quality of coverage for a community and city, and the diversity of the newsroom’s staff carrying it out.

“Journalism, deservedly, gets low marks… and it’s a generational failing,” said Escobar.

It’s one that will also not be fixed all at one time, but over time.

That being said, Escobar did point to clear goals the Inquirer must meet as hope for the future.

On another positive note, he celebrated what he called “heroic” coverage from the Philadelphia Inquirer staff over the past year and a half of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s well over 500 days under the most challenging reporting situations that I have ever seen… and I was the city editor of The Post during 9/11,” said Escobar.

“This is not the largest newsroom in the country. This is not the smallest newsroom in the country,” he continued.

“This is a very talented newsroom that when it comes time to fulfill the journalistic mission, it does it exceptionally well.”

UNA PEQUEÑA AYUDA DE LA P.S. 69

Escobar regresó a la ciudad de Nueva York, hizo un viaje de tres meses por Colombia y luego se dedicó a enseñar Español durante más o menos un año, hasta que un viejo amigo y compañero de P.S. 69 le ofreció la primera oportunidad en el periodismo: incorporarse como editor del Queens Tribune, un diario local.

En el proceso de selección, Escobar fue enviado a cubrir un evento de protesta por la participación de Estados Unidos en la Guerra Civil de El Salvador que iba a llevarse a cabo en su alma mater, Queens College.

“Nunca había hecho algo así, ni siquiera en la escuela de periodismo”, dijo.

“Fui allí, me senté en la parte de atrás.

Tomé notas, no hablé con nadie, volví a casa, lo escribí a mano, luego lo mecanografié y luego lo envié”.

Escobar fue contratado poco después.

APRENDER EL OFICIO

A partir de ahí, Escobar pasaría a trabajar para periódicos como el Hudson Dispatch, el Hartford Courant y luego el Philadelphia Daily News antes de aterrizar en el Washington Post.

A lo largo del camino, tomó varias lecciones sobre la práctica del periodismo.

“El periodismo es realmente un oficio, y es una de esas pocas profesiones... que realmente aprendes en el trabajo”, dijo Escobar. “Puedes ir a la escuela de periodismo y ellos te pueden enseñar lo básico, pero gradualmente te vuelves bueno al practicarlo”.

En el Hudson Dispatch, Escobar dijo que aprendió cómo convertirse en un experto en un tema a través de reportajes; en su caso, se trataba de la vivienda. También aprendió de sus interacciones con la gran población cubana en Union City, Nueva Jersey, la importancia de trazar una línea con las fuentes, especialmente con aquellas con las que podía conectarse en español.

Gracias a su paso por el Philadelphia Daily News, descubrió Filadelfia, una ciudad que lo capturó tanto por su historia como sus vecindarios.

“La ciudad me pareció enorme, a pesar de que crecí en Nueva York. Creo que una de las razones por las que parecía tan grande es porque había muchas ciudades en una”, dijo Escobar.

Cuando se unió a The Post, primero ascendió para convertirse en el jefe de la oficina de América Latina, exponiéndolo más a la diversidad de esa parte del mundo.

“El que piense que está muy unificada por el lenguaje y la religión, verá que es diferente y está dividida de muchas más formas”, dijo Escobar.

El Post también le dio su primera experiencia como editor, al convertirse en editor de la sección “ciudad” durante seis años, entre 1999 y 2005. En su tiempo en ese cargo, dirigió la cobertura de importantes historias como el 11 de septiembre y los francotiradores de DC.

DOS VECES EN PHILLY

Desde ahí pasó a trabajar para el Pew Research Center durante casi dos años antes de comenzar su primera gira como editor en el Philadelphia Inquirer en 2007.

Llegó en un momento en que el periódico tenía problemas económicos. Un nuevo panorama digital estaba invadiendo el negocio de la impresión tradicional, y los líderes de las salas de redacción estaban luchando y abriéndose camino hacia la viabilidad financiera.

Escobar se fue unos meses antes de que el Inquirer se mudara de sus oficinas históricas en Broad y Callowhill a la actual, en la Octava y Market. Se fue a Dallas, donde enseñó Periodismo en SMU y colaboró como columnista en el Dallas Morning News.

Regresó a Filadelfia en 2012 como editor adjunto y luego ascendió a editor en jefe en 2015.

EDITOR EN JEFE EN UN AÑO LLENO DE DESAFÍOS

Escobar fue nombrado editor jefe en noviembre de 2020 a raíz de la controversia que despertó en el periódico el reportaje “Buildings Matter, Too”, que comparaba las vidas de negros y marrones con edificios durante las protestas de George Floyd de 2020, y llevó a la renuncia del ex editor principal, Stan Wischnowski.

La controversia requirió que el periódico y su liderazgo hicieran un examen de conciencia y propusieran metas claras y definibles para la diversidad, la equidad y la inclusión tanto en la sala de redacción como en su cobertura.

“Han pasado más de 500 días bajo las situaciones para informar más desafiantes que jamás haya visto... y eso que fui el editor de la ciudad de The Post durante el 11-S”, dijo Escobar.

n Saturday, Oct. 2, an oil spill was reported off the coast of Southern California as a result of some 3,000 barrels of oil or about 570,000 liters leaking from an offshore platform. It is one of the worst environmental disasters to hit the area in decades.

“This oil spill represents one of the most devastating situations our community has faced in decades,” Kim Carr, mayor of Huntington Beach, said at a news conference.

The director of the company that operates the pipeline noted that teams of divers have examined more than 8,000 feet of the pipeline and are concentrating on an area of great interest.

“We are investigating whether it could have been a ship’s anchor, but at this point that is in the assessment phase,” said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr.

According to regulatory findings, Houston-based Amplify Energy has been cited 72 times for safety and environmental violations serious enough to curtail or suspend drilling.

Born in Panama City, Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna emerged as one of the salsa figures in New York during the 70s and has managed to stay current thanks to his continuous reinvention that leads him to merge in his projects his Afro-Cuban influence with different rhythms from around the world.

But Blades is not just a successful artist. Thanks to his law degree from the School of Law and Political Sciences at the University of Panama (1974), as well as his Master of Laws from the Harvard Graduate Law School (1985), the singer held the position of Minister of Tourism of Panama between 2004 and 2009.

In tribute to his career and his legacy in the world of salsa, his followers and other musicians remembered him and celebrated the life of the man who became the benchmark of the Afro-Antillean rhythm born in New York City.

“For me today was born the most important singer of Afro-Antillean and tropical music, and the reference of this genre we call salsa,” Moncho Rivera, nephew of ‘Maelo,’ told EFE.

A PRODIGY

Rivera began his musical career at the age of 17, when in 1948, he was invited to be a “bongosero” in Conjunto Monterrey, led by Monchito Muley.

When it comes to buying a home, more than half of homeownership growth over the past decade is due to the Latino and Hispanic population. By some accounts, Latino and Hispanic home buyers are also forecasted to comprise of 70 percent of homeowner-

It leaves them with life-altering disabilities in a country that also often overlooks those living with them.

Despite societal ignorance, many of these amputees find a home on the football pitch. A recent tournament in Mexico City put their skills on display for all to see.

ntering the first quarter of 2020 in an unthinkable dynamic of isolation and confinement due to the risk of dying changed many of the social dynamics, more in some countries than in others. The coronavirus put the world on the ropes, like a world boxing champion destroying his rival.

For more than 18 months, there have been high numbers of infected and dead by the pandemic, in unequal public health actions, due to the deep social and economic inequity in countries such as those of Latin America and Africa. Many people of all conditions and ages died. It has been a time of high spikes of contagion and overflow of the occupation of the Intensive Care Units and of lax measures to save the economy when the numbers of the pandemic fall.

Now, when it was thought that we were finally going back to a normality closer to what the world was before the Covid (BC is no longer before Christ), there is talk of more variants, of a third dose of vaccine , of new peaks and of maintaining restrictive measures indefinitely. Undoubtedly, the panorama suggests that the economic crisis in many countries of the region will hardly make them raise their heads very soon.

Ante ese panorama, no sobra recordar las cifras de la pandemia, por lo menos al momento de terminar de escribir este texto. Estados Unidos: 44,2 millones de contagiados y 711 mil muertos. En América Latina y el Caribe: 45,1 millones de contagiados y millón y medio de muertos a causa del virus. El viacrucis sigue.

lease, don’t lie to us anymore. The justice system in the U.S. is not impartial, and not only is it not impartial, but it is also a political party apparatus that acts underhandedly.

We trust the Supreme Court to review issues such as abortion, immigration, death penalty, or gun control far from partisan passion, and we find that the highest defender of the Constitution responds to one Party.

There are nine justices on the Court, appointed for life, nominated by the president in the office, and confirmed by the Senate. It is clear that the scheme politicizes the procedure.

In India, with a similar system, judges appoint judges under the Collegium, thus achieving independence.

Not going too far back in time, in the Trump era, after Justice Ruth Ginsburg death, conservatives “ran” to appoint her replacement days before the 2020 presidential election.

Amy Coney Barrett (49) was confirmed just 30 days after her nomination, something not seen since 1975.

The same Barrett that in recent days was offended by accusations of lack of impartiality at an event organized by Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, one of her most important supporters. It’s the joke that writes itself.

The conservative-progressive justices ratio is currently 6-3, and in the near future it could be 7-2. This results in the conservative model shaping American life.

So don’t be surprised that the Court did not object the anti-abortion law in Texas, or upheld the law that revives Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” plan, which hits asylum-seekers.

And in this partisan game, where are the liberals, judges and professors who would like a Court with progressive legal philosophies?

The Biden administration is timidly calling for an increase in the number of justices to achieve ideological balance, but according to Adam Serwer, political writer for The Atlantic, the liberal push has fallen short versus the conservative strategy.

But for conservatives, having the Court per se is no guarantee either. That’s only achieved by making us believe that this is an institution we need to do justice. They will continue to lie to us, yes, but don’t let them fool us.

was rejected over and over while looking for a job, any job, in my early days in Philadelphia, but I remember vividly three instances in particular: One at the Philadelphia Daily News, one at La Actualidad, the Spanish-language newspaper in the neighborhood where I lived in North Philly, and one more at the Miami Herald’s Spanish-language daily, El Nuevo Herald, in downtown Miami.

Three applications I enthusiastically submitted to potential employers of my talents, endorsed by ample academic credentials.

But I was literally the proverbial “round peg that couldn’t fit the square hole.”
