ace seis meses el alcalde Jim Kenney anunció la conformación de un equipo interdisciplinario cuyo propósito era diseñar una hoja de ruta para enfrentar la epidemia de consumo de opioides que azota al país y que solo en Filadelfia le quitó la vida a 1.609 personas en los últimos dos años: 702 en 2015 y 907 en 2016.

Ese equipo acaba de entregar un reporte final con los resultados de su trabajo y una lista de 18 recomendaciones para ponerle freno a esta problemática que, de acuerdo con el documento, tiene origen en los años 90, cuando el consumo de analgésicos bajo prescripción médica se disparó en Estados Unidos.

Las 907 muertes por sobredosis del año pasado son apenas la punta del iceberg de un drama más complejo.

Por un lado (el ilegal), el bajo precio y la pureza de la heroína que se vende en sectores del norte como Kensington han convertido a la ciudad en una especie de destino narcótico; no es gratuito que la DEA señale al Noreste de Filadelfia como “el mercado de heroína más grande de la Costa Este del país”.

Por otro lado (el legal), el informe señala que cuatro de cada cinco heroinómanos en el país tuvieron su primer contacto con un opioide mediante el consumo de analgésicos prescritos por sus médicos. La facilidad con la que muchos galenos de la ciudad prescriben este tipo de medicamentos opioides, hizo que la venta y el consumo se disparara en Filadelfia, de poco más de 600.000 dosis en el 2000 a cerca de un

millón 500 mil en el 2012. El documento estima que cada año entre 100.000 y 200.000 filadelfianos reciben más de una prescripción médica de analgésicos opioides en casos en los que su consumo no es recomendado. Se estima también que cerca de 50.000 personas de la ciudad abusan de esas sustancias.

Esto no solo ha generado una gran epidemia de adicción, sino también la configuración de un mercado que mueve millones de dólares al año y del que no pocas compañías aseguradoras y farmacéuticas se han beneficiado.

En cuanto al consumo de heroína, la cifra no es más alentadora, todo porque su bajo costo facilita que una persona que consume opioides bajo precripción médica haga el tránsito a esta droga ilegal. Según el equipo interdisciplinario en Filadelfia existen cerca de 70.000 heroinómanos, la mayoría de ellos empezaron consumiendo sustancias legales bajo control médico; entre ellos, los hispanos son el segundo grupo étnico más afectado por la epidemia, después de los blancos.

El estudio analiza otras aristas del

tema, como la aparición del fentanilo, sustancia sintética que supera hasta 100 veces la potencia de la morfina y que se encontró en casi la mitad de los restos mortales que dejó la epidemia el año pasado. También observa el impacto en las familias y en el sistema judicial, destacando el enorme riesgo que sufren los adictos cuando son sometidos a medidas privativas de la libertad.

LA RECOMENDACIONES Resolver un problema de proporciones colosales como la epidemia de opioides no es una tarea fácil. Así lo señaló Thomas Farley, comisionado del Departamento de Salud Pública de Filadelfia, quién destacó que las recomendaciones anunciadas son un avance importante en la lucha contra la epidemia, pero no una solución inmediata. “Esta crisis se desarrolló lentamente durante muchos años, pasarán otros varios más antes de que logremos superarla”, afirmó.

Las acciones consignadas en el informe se clasifican en cuatro categorías:

prevención y educación, en la que se enmarca todo lo referente a generar consciencia social e institucional sobre el tema; tratamiento, en el que el énfasis es sobre la necesidad de ampliar la capacidad y la calidad de atención a pacientes; prevención de sobredosis, en donde se aconsejan una serie de medidas encaminadas a salvar vidas; y trabajo con el sistema de justicial criminal, en la que se habla de fortalecer el accionar policial en contra de las mafias y de medidas alternativas para el tratamiento judicial del consumo de la drogas.

La primera línea de acción parte de reconocer que en general la ciudad sabe muy poco sobre el manejo de medicamentos opiáceos. Para el equipo es urgente que las autoridades de la ciudad pongan en marcha campañas dirigidas a educar a la población sobre los riesgos de este tipo de medicamentos, el uso de otros como la naloxona en casos de sobredosis, la desestigmatización de los servicios y tratamientos dirigidos a personas con adicción, así como trabajar directamente con las escuelas de salud para ofrecer programas de educación a los estudiantes universitarios y profesionales.

Para frenar la prescripción desaforada de medicamentos compuestos por opioides, el informe también recomienda crear normas que regulen y promuevan prácticas profesionales al interior de las empresas aseguradoras que garanticen la salud de los pacientes y les brinden tratamientos que incluyan el uso de medicinas alternativas.

l Condado de El Paso presentó esta semana una demanda de inconstitucionalidad contra Texas por la ley estatal SB4, que permite a las policías locales pedir documentos migratorios, incluso por una falta de tránsito.

La demanda establece que la ley estatal viola tanto la Constitución del país, como la del propio estado de Texas, según los demandantes.

El recurso legal fue presentado por la firma de abogados Garza Golando Morán, a favor del Condado de El Paso, el Sheriff del Condado Richard Wiles, el Proyecto de Organización de Texas y el Proyecto de los Derechos Civiles de Texas.

La demanda se interpuso en el Distrito Occidental, en San Antonio, y establece que la ley SB4 generaría “mucho daño a los residentes de El Paso”.

El comisionado del Condado David Stout dijo que la demanda pretende detener la medida antes de que entre en vigor en septiembre.

“El Condado de El Paso tiene un interés especial en poder derogar esta ley, que nos perjudica, y en mantener un acuerdo que tenemos en una corte federal que estipula que nuestros oficiales del Sheriff no pueden aplica leyes de inmigración”, afirmó Stout.

Docenas de manifestantes, miembros de diversas organizaciones de esta región fronteriza de Texas con México, marcharon por varias manzanas, desde el edificio estatal hasta el del Condado de El Paso, en respaldo a la medida.

La Red Fronteriza por los Derechos Humanos, con sede en El Paso, ha abanderado las acciones en contra de la ley y ha insistido en que ésta promueve la discriminación por perfil racial y fomenta abusos por parte de la policía.

“Vamos a decirle a los comisionados que estamos orgullosos de que estén demandando esta ley racista y que estén defendiendo a la comunidad inmigrante”, dijo Gabriela Castañeda, vocera de la Red Fronteriza por los Derechos Humanos.

ace cuatro años, Rubén y Deborah decidieron abandonar su Madrid natal para abrir su propio salón de tatuajes en Glasgow, en Escocia, donde sabían que la demanda de tatuajes de autor era mucho más alta que en España. Lo que no sabía aún esta pareja de conocidos tatuadores españoles era que buena parte de sus nuevos clientes serían marines norteamericanos estacionados en la base naval de Clyde, un enclave de submarinos de la OTAN al oeste de Glasgow.

“La mayoría de los marines que vienen a tatuarse son latinos o afroamericanos, y todos son jovencísimos”, comenta Deborah, cofundadora del Forevermore Tattoo Parlor, donde gente de todo el mundo acude a tatuarse atraídos por la fama de su marido, Rubén.

De Glasgow a Afganistán, pasando por Corea del Sur, Siria o Irak, desde el año 1995, la presencia de militares “no blancos” en el ejército norteamericano, especialmente de latinos, se ha multiplicado de forma exponencial. Según datos del Censo más reciente, se calcula que el número de latinos enlistados en el ejército de EEUU se acerca a los 157.000, representando alrededor del 13 por ciento de los enlistados en las Fuerzas Armadas y el 7 por ciento de los oficiales.

Al margen de haber multiplicado su presencia en números en las Fuerzas Armadas Norteamericanas, los latinos también tienen un enorme peso como héroes de guerra a lo largo de las décadas. Los historiadores y los documentos hablan de un elevado número de hispanos que perdieron la vida en conflictos pasados como la Guerra de Vietnam, pero aun y así, no han recibido el reconocimiento público que se merecen.

En este contexto la presencia de militares boricuas en el ejército de Estados Unidos es mucho más importante de lo que parece. Más de 62.000 puertorriqueños se unieron a las fuerzas armadas durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y más de 43.000 boricuas sirvieron en la Guerra de Corea. Durante este último conflicto, los Borinqueneers sirvieron en nueve compañías militares distintas, dando su vida en servicio a su país.

Estas cifras son solo una traducción numérica de miles de historias, miles de hombres y mujeres que sufrieron los rigores de la guerra y que cada Memorial Day son recordados por sus compañeros en armas y sus familias.

LOS VETERANOS BORICUAS

Aquí en Filadelfia existe un grupo bien particular de excombatientes puertorriqueños que vistieron el uniforme estadounidense en las

guerras del siglo pasado: desde la Primera hasta las de Vietnam y Corea. Se trata del Puesto 840 de la Legión Americana, integrado por veteranos latinos que pertenecieron al Regimiento 65 de Infantería del Ejército y que todos los años por estas fechas se reúnen precisamente para reivindicar su aporte militar a EEUU. “El papel de los soldados latinos, especialmente puertorriqueños en las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos ha sido muy significativo”, señala Darryl Johnson, oficial adjunto del puesto 840. Según este veterano de la fuerza aérea, los combatientes puertorriqueños se destacaron por su voluntad y entrega a la causa durante las guerras de Vietnam y Corea.

“Sin embargo, todavía hay mucho por mejorar en cuanto al reconocimiento”, afirma Johnson, y se refiere a la suerte que las minorías compartieron al interior de las fuerzas militares. “Tanto los latinos como los afroamericanos fuimos objeto de discriminación. Nos costó mucho ganarnos un puesto en la historia militar del país”.

Este veterano de la fuerza aérea que en pocas semanas pasará a ser comandante de la Legión, asegura que el Memorial Day es una fecha importante para quienes han vestido el uniforme, pero no es suficiente para generar consciencia histórica sobre el sacrificio que miles de hombres y mujeres, especialmente latinos y afroamericanos, hicieron por el país.

Quienes sí tienen claro ese papel son los veteranos puertorriqueños que se reúnen bajo el baldaquín de la Freedom Foundation’s Medal of Honor Grove, en Valley Forge, donde desde 1977 hay un monumento dedicado a los héroes de guerra originarios de Puerto Rico.

“Es responsabilidad de todos honrar la memoria de los que hicieron el sacrificio máximo por nosotros,” fueron las palabras de José M. Meléndez, miembro del Puesto 840, durante la ceremonia en honor a los caídos llevada a cabo en Valley Forge el año pasado, según el Inquirer.

“Hay gente que se olvida del propósito de este día”, añadió. “Se van a la playa, organizan fiestas y comidas al aire libre. Pero aquí pensamos diferente. Somos conscientes de que tenemos una responsabilidad, y estamos aquí para esto”, concluyó Meléndez en su discurso dirigido a homenajear a los puertorriqueños.

DÉCADAS DE DISCRIMINACIÓN

En EEUU, los veteranos de guerra suman en total cerca de 21,2 millones, cerca del 9% de la población. Los veteranos hispanos representan el 6%, pero la cifra se duplicará en los próximos años, alcanzando el 12% en 2040, según el Departamento de Asuntos de Veteranos.

Oficial Adjunto del Puesto 840 de la Legión Americana Centro para Estudios Puertorriqueños de la City University de Nueva York (CUNY) destacaba que aunque el servicio militar ha sido una escalera de ascenso social para los puertorriqueños y otros soldados latinos, éstos afrontan obstáculos de promoción al rango de oficiales debido en parte a “décadas de discriminación y asuntos culturales”.

Estos problemas se ven reflejados principalmente en los veteranos residentes en Puerto Rico. “Su situación ha empeorado de forma notable debido a la crisis económica que atraviesa la isla. Muchos se han visto obligados a emigrar porque no pueden subsistir”, comentó Franqui-Rivera.

Los veteranos latinos en general también afrontan más problemas a la hora de acceder a prestaciones sociales como vivienda, educa-

ción, y empleo. Según la Coalición Nacional de Veteranos Sin Hogar (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans), el 40% de éstos son afrodescendientes o hispanos, pese a que ambos grupos conforman el 14% de la población de veteranos.

Otra de las personas que mejor conoce los problemas que afectan a los veteranos hispanos es Frank Medina, presidente nacional de la Alianza para la Medalla de Oro para los Borinqueneers.

Medina ha señalado que el problema de raíz es que muchos veteranos latinos están desinformados de cuales son sus derechos y beneficios sociales a los que tienen derecho. También sufren problemas para sortear la compleja burocracia requerida para acceder a las prestaciones sociales, haciendo que muchos se queden a medio camino.

Por otro lado, el periódico latino La Opinión, con base en Los Angeles, reportaba el año pasado sobre los 12.000 veteranos que se cree que han sido deportados de EEUU por haber cometido faltas menores y violaciones de la ley.

Algunos siguen luchando para poder regresar a este país y recibir atención médica urgente.

“Nadie que haya servido en las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos debe ser deportado, no hay razón; los tienen que ayudar porque son nuestros hermanos,”, dijo William González, ex

Desde que se creó esta condecoración, en los años de la Guerra Civil, sesenta hispanos han recibido la Medalla de Honor, informa Wikipedia.

HISTORIAS RECIENTES

La conmemoración del Memorial Day es la mejor justificación para recuperar la memoria de los héroes de guerra latinos que durante mucho tiempo han estado olvidados.

“Todos los años por esta fecha llevo a mis hijos al Cementerio Nacional de Florida, en Bushnell, y les enseño a honrar la memoria de quienes dieron la vida por su nación”, explica a Tiempo Latino Claudio Báez, veterano de la guerra de Irak entre 2005 y 2006.

De madre colombiana y padre puertorriqueño, Báez es uno de los 1,2 millones de veteranos hispanos que residen hoy en Estados Unidos.

Báez trabaja en el departamento de operaciones de un puerto en Florida y también para la Guardia Costera.

Otro caso muy diferente es el del marine J.W. Cortés, un veterano puertorriqueño que

Al retirarse, Cortés optó por iniciar una carrera como modelo y actor de televisión (Gotham, Blacklist, Big Bang Theory, etc) además de servir en el cuerpo de policía de Nueva York (MTAPD).

Aprovechando su fama como actor, este ex-marine puertorriqueño está comprometido con diversas iniciativas para promover y empoderar a la comunidad de Veteranos. Entre ellas, la organización “Got Your 6”, que en 2015 le nombró “American Icon”.

En varias entrevistas, JW Cortés ha explicado que cada año por el Memorial Day visita el cementerio para homenajear a su padre, fallecido en la guerra de Vietnam. Y destaca la importancia de compartir historias de otros combatientes como la de su padre para poner en relieve el papel de los latinos en el ejército de EEUU. La ausencia de veteranos hispanos famosos, tanto en la vida real como en el cine, fue lo que inspiró al cineasta y actor chicano Enrique Cas-

El primer hispano merecedor de la Medalla de Honor fue el cabo Joseph H. De Castro, del Ejército de la Unión, por su papel en la batalla de Gettysburg, en Pensilvania, el 3 de julio de 1863.

Para su obra de teatro, Castillo eligió algunos nombres conocidos: David Barkley Cantu (Primera Guerra Mundial), Macario Garcia (Segunda Guerra Mundial), Eugene A. Obregon (Corea) y Roy Benavidez (Vietnam). Sin embargo, la mayoría de los latinos premiados con la Medalla de Honor han sido ignorados por Hollywood y los medios de comunicación de masas.

Quizás el momento más destacado para los soldados latinos fue el año 2014, cuando el presidente Barack Obama concedió la Medalla de Honor a una quincena de hispanos en una ceremonia en la Casa Blanca, cumpliendo con un nuevo requisito de la National Defense Authorization Act (Ley de autorización de la Defensa Nacional, NDAA). Dicha ley, que debe renovarse cada año en el Congreso, tenía un nuevo requisito: reclamar e reconocimiento de los veteranos judío-americanos e hispano-americanos en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la Guerra de Corea y la guerra de Vietnam, para evitar cualquier tipo de discriminación o prejuicio cultural en los medallistas.

Los esfuerzos por recuperar la memoria de los soldados latinos han empezado a dar su fruto. El año pasado, la cadena NBC emitió un programa justo antes del Memorial Day recogía los testimonios de varios casos de veteranos latinos que perdieron a compañeros en combate.

Uno de ellos era el de Pamela Campos, analista de las Fuerzas Aéreas, que perdió a un amigo en Afganistán, o la capitán senior Graciela Tiscareño-Sato, hija de inmigrantes mexicanos y antigua instructora de pilotaje aéreo.

Cada último lunes de mayo, Tiscareño-Sato lleva a sus hijos al cementerio de Hayward, en San Francisco, para escuchar los discursos de los veteranos y saludar a sus compañeros de servicio.

El año pasado, además, Tiscareño-Sato se convirtió en la primera latina en dar discurso en Hayward Cemetery por Memorial Day. “Para ser tenido en cuenta como veterano, o veterana, latino, tienes que estar presente en la ceremonia y pedir que se haga memoria de los hermanas y hermanos que ya no están con nosotros”, dijo la veterana a NBC. Tiscareño perdió a su amiga Victoria Pinckney, latina como ella, en un incidente en Kirguistán, en 2013. ara aprender a bailar tango solo hay que cumplir un requisito: saber caminar. Eso dice Meredith Klein, fundadora y directora de la Escuela de Tango Argentino de Filadelfia, y organizadora del Festival Internacional de Tango, que este año celebra su séptima versión en la ciudad con un cartel de experimentados maestros traídos directamente desde Buenos Aires y cuyo objetivo es poner a bailar a todo el que quiera zambullirse en uno de los géneros musicales más fascinantes del mundo.

El Festival Internacional de Tango de Filadelfia se llevará a cabo entre el primero y el cuatro de junio en la German Society of Pennsylvania, lugar escogido por los organizadores para acoger a más de 500 personas que, durante cuatro días, se dedicarán a explorar la música de gigantes latinoamericanos como Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla y Osvaldo Pugliese, entre otros.

El festival tiene un enfoque netamente pedagógico, su programación consiste en una serie de clases, seminarios y talleres dictados por bailarines de reconocida trayectoria artística. En total serán más de 28 talleres de baile y apreciación musical, con música de expertos Dj´s que tocarán tandas completas de todos los estilos de esta música: el vals, la milonga y el tango en sí mismo.

Esta vez, los residentes de Filadelfia tendrán la oportunidad de aprender el lenguaje del tango, desde su melodía hasta su poesía, cómo invitar a una mujer a bailar mediante el arte del “cabeceo” (una serie de gestos y contactos visuales que se tienen entre el hombre y la mujer antes de salir a la pista de baile), o su estructura, cómo dar los primeros pasos, los giros, cómo liderar la danza, cómo hacer los enroques, cómo medir los tiempos y ritmos… todo de la mano de los mejores bailarines.

EL FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL de Tango ofrecerá una mezcla perfecta de espectáculo y talleres en los que los asistentes tendrán oportunidad de sumergirse en un mundo fascinante de melodía, danza y poesía. Fotografías suministrada/Helio Ha Entre ellos se destacan los maestros Nito García y Elba Sottile. Él, mayor de 80 años, es un testimonio vivo de la Edad de Oro del tango (entre los años treinta y cincuenta), fue bailarín de la orquesta del maestro Osvaldo Pugliese, y sin duda un hombre con un conocimiento invaluable sobre el tango como música, como baile y cultura. Ella, experimentada maestra con más de 40 años dándole la vuelta al mundo a puro paso de tanguera, lo acompaña en la pista de baile. Ambos vienen a Filadelfia para brindar lo que será una gran experiencia de aprendizaje.

Adrián Veredice y Alejandra Hobert, y Octavio Fernández y Carla Marano son las otras dos parejas de bailarines que llegan desde Argentina. Ellos dictarán seminarios y talleres para parejas de todos los niveles: desde principiantes hasta avanzados. El festival también prevé clases para personas sin pareja que quieran iniciarse en esta danza. El maestro Marcelo Gutiérrez estará a cargo de aquellos que aún no tienen con quién bailar.

Durante los cuatro días de festival, los asistentes contarán con el acompañamiento de estos profesionales en jornadas que exploran todos los aspectos de la música y la danza. Al final de cada día se celebrará una milonga, o baile social, en la que la pista de baile se abrirá para que todos participen en rumbas que se extenderán hasta horas de la madrugada.

Aunque el plazo de preinscripción ya pasó, quienes quieran asistir no se pueden quedar con las ganas. Solo tienen que acercarse a la German Society of Pennsylvania (en el 611 de la Spring Garden St.) y cancelar el valor las clases o talleres a los que quieran asistir. El festival ofrece múltiples opciones para acceder a su programación, incluso se puede ir a disfrutar las milongas nocturnas por precios que varían según el tipo de las actividades, muchos están por debajo de los 40 dólares. TANGUEROS DE FILADELFIA

Para Meredith, el tango tienen un poder de atracción inmenso sobre la gente, es un puente que ayuda a conectar a personas que aparentemente no tienen nada en común. “Conocer gente diferente siempre es bueno”, asegura esta estadounidense que tuvo su primer contacto con el tango por allá en 1997, cuando estudiaba teoría de la música; desde entonces no ha parado de bailar.

El tango le sirvió como excusa y vehículo para darle la vuelta al mundo: vivió tres años en Buenos Aires, viajó por Europa y América ofreciendo clases y talleres. Hace nueve años regresó a Filadelfia para echar raíces y fundar la Escuela de Tango Argentino, un proyecto nada fácil de realizar en una ciudad tan lejana en todo sentido de Buenos Aires.

“Empezar un emprendimiento es muy difícil.

Llegué justo cuando estalló la crisis económica

en EEUU. En tiempos como ese es muy difícil sacar un proyecto adelante porque la gente se concentra en asegurar lo básico para sobrevivir y el entretenimiento de alguna manera pasa a un segundo plano”, afirma.

El tango es una melodía con una carga muy fuerte de nostalgia y melancolía. Quizá por eso no existía mejor momento para él que aquellos días de crisis en Filadelfia. Meredith nunca perdió la fe: “He tenido la oportunidad de conocer comunidades tangueras en todo el mundo y eso me ha servido para darme cuenta de que el éxito de una comunidad tanguera radica en la capacidad de compromiso de sus maestros.

Siempre creí que desarrollar un proyecto como este era posible en Filadelfia”, recuerda.

Los números la acompañan, en febrero de 2018 su escuela cumplirá 10 años en la ciudad.

Con ocho clases semanales, y una comunidad de cerca de 500 bailarines y alumnos de todos los niveles y edades, la comunidad tanguera de Filadelfia está más viva que nunca. En 2015, Meredith y sus alumnos fueron los encargados de darle la bienvenida al papa Francisco, durante el Encuentro Mundial de las Familias.

Y este año celebra la séptima versión de un festival maravilloso que no solo enseña a bailar el tango, también confirma su cualidad de reemplazar el lenguaje verbal para crear puentes interculturales e intergeneracionales entre personas que no comparten el mismo idioma.

laudia Meléndez Salinas nació en Puebla (México) y al terminar la secundaria sus tíos la invitaron a pasar el verano en su casa de California para hacer de canguro de su hija pequeña. Ella aceptó encantada. Era una buena ocasión para conocer Estados Unidos y mejorar el inglés antes de empezar los estudios de Física y Matemáticas en la universidad.

Lo que no imaginaba era que la experiencia le gustaría tanto como para cambiar totalmente de planes y quedarse un par de años. Meléndez se matriculó primero en Cabrillo College -así pudo conseguir la visa de estudiantey más tarde en la Universidad de California en Santa Cruz, donde empezó a

NACIDA EN MEXICO y residente en California, Claudia Meléndez es autora de la novela”A Fighting Chance”, un retrato de la comunidad inmigrante mexicana en Salinas. tomarle el gusto a la escritura. Acabó convertida en periodista, profesión que le llevó a vivir a Texas, Los Angeles y finalmente a Salinas, California.

Actualmente, Meléndez cubre temas de inmigración y asuntos latinos para el Monterey County Herald.

Los últimos diez años los ha dedicado a reportar sobre la comunidad inmigrante en Salinas. ¿Han cambiado mucho las cosas con la llegada de Trump a la presidencia?

Han empeorado. Para gente como yo, que llegué con un visado de turista, estudié en la universidad y obtuve la ciudanía después de casarme con un norteamericano, conseguir el estatus legal fue un proceso relativamente fácil. Pero ahora hay más trámites, te hacen salir del país… El problema más grave de este país son los inmigrantes indocumentados, hay cerca de 11 millones. Es urgente regularizar su situación, porque sin papeles no pueden acceder ni a unos servicios médicos ni educación de calidad, ni conseguir buenos trabajos. Y eso va creando grandes divisiones en la sociedad. Acá en el condado de Monterrey es muy obvio, zonas muy ricas, como Carmel o Pebble Beach, y otras con mucha pobreza, casi tercermundista, como en Salinas. Ser indocumentado te relega a ciudadano de segunda categoría. ¿Cómo regularizar a tanta gente?

Obama lo intentó, primero con el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, el DACA [en inglés: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals], un programa para regularizar los más de 700.000 inmigrantes indocumentados que entraron al país con menos de 16 años. Y después con el DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents), en 2014, pero fue bloqueada por las Cortes. El DAPA era un programa que daba derecho a vivir y traba-

jar a inmigrantes indocumentados que hubieran vivido en EEUU desde el año 2010 y tuvieran hijos con la ciudadanía norteamericana o la residencia permanente). Si no se regulariza su situación, seguirá siendo un país muy segregado. ¿Su primera novela, “A Fighting Chance”, refleja los problemas de la comunidad latina en Salinas?

Esa era mi intención. Estaba frustrada porque como periodista estoy obligada a escribir notas de 300 palabras y tenía mucho que contar: Salinas es una ciudad pobre, con pocos recursos económicos. Y en 2006 tuvimos una crisis de presupuesto que obligaba a cerrar las bibliotecas de la ciudad.

Fue un escándalo a nivel nacional, ¡la ciudad de Steinbeck iba a cerrar las bibliotecas! Así que empecé una historia de un personaje inventado, un joven mexicanoamericano de familia muy pobre de Salinas, que está intentando sobrevivir en esta ciudad. Él quiere ser boxeador profesional para ganar mucho dinero y poder comprarle una casa a su mamá, que es trabajadora del campo y tiene muchas dificultades económicas desde que el padre les abandonó.

Hace poco escribió sobre el caso de Jose Manuel Martínez, un inmigrante de 19 años de Salinas, beneficiario del DACA, que justamente era trabajador del campo.

Sí, y asustó mucho a la comunidad.

Juan Manuel fue detenido por el ICE cuando acompañaba a un amigo a visitar la cárcel y le acusaron de querer introducir droga. No era cierto. Los fiscales acabaron retirando los cargos. El muchacho no tenía antecedentes penales. Sus abogados negociaron y al final solo fue acusado de estar estacionado en un lugar no permitido, el parking del sheriff, en la cárcel. No obstante, el caso puso de manifiesto que Trump se ha propuesto ir a por los indocumentados que han cometido crimen y el concepto “crimen” se está extendiendo.

La literatura escrita por latinos sigue siendo bastante desconocida en EEUU… Hay escritores famosos, como Junot Diaz, pero no tenemos mucha visibilidad. Yo ya asumí de entrada que el tema de mi novela no era muy comercial. Retratar la realidad de la comunidad latina no es un tema muy sexy para las masas y, por tanto, no tan atractivo para editoriales y agentes literarios.

a idea es forjar la leyenda del que ineluctablemente se convertirá un buen día en rey. Como en toda narrativa de formación del heroísmo, una porción importante de la intriga está dedicada a la preparación. Habrá entonces largas secuencias de entrenamiento con la célebre espada que tanto tiempo pasó enterrada en la piedra. Habrá también aprendizaje en el bosque profundo, donde el hombre se enfrenta a sus habilidades de sobrevivencia.

La magia, las criaturas maléficas y los códigos de la caballería recordarán las versiones más antiguas de la leyenda.

Pero el estilo inconfundible de Guy Ritchie, inalterable desde Snatch (2000), estará siempre hay para recordar que se trata de algo sin precedentes, algo más ambicioso, en la medida de lo posible desmarcado de los clichés de lo épico y de lo mitológico, quizá no del todo logrado, pero sin duda portador de una mirada directoral muy personal. Si hay un aspecto del film para destacar, es precisamente la autenticidad del estilo.

En cuanto a los fallos, la lista es quizá más amplia. A pesar de las buenas actuaciones de Jude Law y Charlie Hunnam, las interpretaciones de los personajes secundarios dejan mucho que desear. Los grandes momentos bélicos, espectaculares desde el punto de vista de la producción, tienden a prolongarse en exceso.

La cámara lenta en los gestos del héroe con la espada se antoja anacrónica y produce más risa que admiración. Los diálogos, aunque dinámicos,

carecen a menudo de continuidad y acusan la ausencia de explicaciones que clarifiquen los giros de la narración. Es como si Ritchie, obsesionado con la originalidad de su estética, hubiera dejado de lado lo relativo a la construcción de la intriga.

Concebido como el punto de partida de una trilogía, ‘King Arthur’ tiene el tono narrativo de un prólogo, lo que produce al mismo tiempo un efecto de suspenso y un estancamiento de la acción que puede resultar agotador. De una escena a otra, la tensión narrativa puede ya sea disolverse y provocar el desinterés del espectador, o incrementarse, logrando pasajes de gran expectación. El movimiento de un polo a otro es tan impredecible como recurrente, y la sensación es la de estar viendo una película entretenida que, sin embargo, no termina nunca de atrapar nuestra atención.

La leyenda de Excalibur comienza con un joven que aún no conoce su verdadera identidad. La búsqueda de sí mismo en un universo fantástico constituye el núcleo de esta primera parte de su historia.

Su antagonista : un rey hechicero que tiene a Camelot bajo su control. Como es de esperarse, la ilusión nace cuando la espada reaparece, lista para ser retirada de la piedra. El honorable Nelson Díaz ha sido un pilar de la comunidad latina durante los últimos 40 años. El pasado viernes, unas doscientas personas asistieron al Taller Puertorriqueño para celebrar y agradecerle sus contribuciones a Filadelfia. Su influencia ha inspirado a jóvenes y mayores.

UNA MUJER SORPRENDIÓ EN PRIMARIAS POR LA CONTRALORÍA

OSCAR LÓPEZ RIVERA RECUPERÓ LA LIBERTAD Tras permanecer 35 años en prisión, el líder independentista Óscar López Rivera recuperó su libertad el pasado 17 de mayo.

En su primer discurso desde Puerto Rico, López Rivera prometió seguir trabajando para lograr la independencia de la isla. La libertad de López Rivera generó polémica alrededor del Puerto Rican Day Parade de Nueva York, que este año le brindará homenaje al expreso político más antiguo de Occidente. La empresa de alimentos Goya y la candidata latina a la alcaldía de la ciudad anunciaron que no respaldarán este año la fiesta boricua más importante en suelo estadounidense.

Los doce años de Alan Butkovitz al frente de la Contraloría de Filadelfia llegarán a su final este 2017 gracias a la sorpresiva victoria de Rebecca Rhynhar, quien se impuso con 77.758 votos a favor frente a los 54.537 de Butkovitz.

“Me siento honrada de ser la nominada demócrata para las elecciones generales a la Contraloría”, fueros las primeras palabras de la ganadora. Rhynhar trabajó como jefe administrativa de la alcaldía de Kenney y directora de presupuesto de la administración de Michael Nutter.

PROPONEN AMPLIAR PROTECCIÓN DE COMUNIDAD LBTQ La Comisión de Relaciones Humanas del Senado estatal acaba de proponer una serie de medidas para incluir la protección de los derechos de la comunidad LGBTQ de Pensilvania en la Ley Estatal de Relaciones Humanas que prohibe formas de discriminación basadas en raza, color de piel, religión, estado marital y país de origen.

La enmienda a la ley incluirá líneas de acción específicas para prevenir actos de discriminación por orientación sexual de las personas.
