I

n this edition, I wanted to take the liberty of talking about a subject that has nothing to do with our cover and, at the same time, has everything to do with it.

This week, we were front row spectators of how history is made in real-time. The accelerated life of social media and broadband internet has denied us a privilege that few people alive can count on, as we watch the direction of our lives change, second by second.

Some, especially the youngest, witnessed and participated in the highest turnout in the country's history, with over 100 million early voters, and millions more on election day.

Today, 20 years into the 21st century, we saw how each ballot, each individual’s will, set an example to the whole world that there are still vestiges of representative democracy in our country.

It was not just about choosing leadership personified, it was about mak-

ENGLISH ing a crucial decision on the direction that the United States of America — and with it the rest of the world — is taking. For the sound of the drumbeat beat on this side of the Atlantic has long and deep echoes on the other side of the world.

Whatever the outcome, whatever the reaction on both sides, the safe-guarding of the right to vote is, in itself, an assured victory.

To all the first voters, abstainers, and doubters who this time decided to make their voice heard: thank you. You have been the heroes of this moment.

Only time will tell if our decisions today are worthy of the future that awaits us. For the moment, your voice has been that of all of us who, for one reason or another, cannot be part of the process.

I fervently hope that this brief trench from which we write can be, in the not too distant future, the channel for more encouraging stories.

n esta edición he querido tomarme el atrevimiento de hablar de un tema que nada tiene que ver con nuestra portada y, al mismo tiempo, tiene todo que ver.

El día de ayer fuimos espectadores en primera fila de cómo se hace historia en tiempo real. La vida acelerada de las redes sociales y el internet de banda ancha nos ha negado un privilegio que pocas personas vivas pueden contar, al observar cómo se cambia el rumbo de nuestras vidas, segundo a segundo.

Algunos, en especial los más jóvenes, fueron testigo y protagonista de la mayor participación en la historia del país, con más de 90 millones de votantes tempranos, y millones más en el día de las elecciones.

Hoy, veinte años dentro del siglo XXI, vimos cómo cada boleta electoral, cada voluntad individual, daba el ejemplo al mundo entero de que aún quedan vestigios de la democracia representativa en nuestro país.

No se trató sólo de elegir el liderazgo

personificado, se trató de tomar una decisión crucial en el rumbo que toman los Estados Unidos de América y, con ellos, el resto del mundo. Pues el eco del tambor que se golpea en este lado del Atlántico tiene largos y profundos ecos del otro lado del mundo.

Sea cual sea el resultado, sea cual sea la reacción de ambas partes, la salvaguarda del ejercicio del voto es, de por sí, una victoria asegurada.

A todos los primeros votantes, abstencionistas y dudosos que esta vez decidieron hacer valer su voz: gracias. Ustedes han sido los héroes de este momento.

Sólo el tiempo dirá si nuestras decisiones de hoy son meritorias del futuro que nos depara la historia. Por los momentos, su voz ha sido la de todos los que, por una u otra razón, no podemos formar parte de este proceso.

Espero fervientemente que esta breve trinchera desde la que escribo pueda ser, en un futuro no muy lejano, el cauce de historias más alentadoras.

En estas elecciones, el verdadero logro ha sido la evidencia de la pluralidad y diversidad de las voces en Estados Unidos.

his might sound like a rhetorical question, but it is borne of genuine curiosity.

Are you a “real” American if you do not have blue eyes or speak with an accent?

Of course, we know these questions are ridiculous because the evidence is overwhelming: Americans look like everybody.

I am a Latina. My family is from Puerto Rico, and I spent many years living in Pennsylvania. I am a lawyer, an activist, and was a U.S. Ambassador.

I am also an American.

I have contributed my time, resources, and expertise to advancing U.S. interests at home and overseas and, believe me, even if I do not appear to be a “gringa” with blond hair, real Americans look exactly like me.

This vast diversity in the appearance of Americans is the incredible result of centuries of immigration.

Immigration is our past and our future. It links us to our values of equality of opportunity and freedom for all, which our Founding Fathers set as our national aspiration all those years ago in Philadelphia.

On a purely pragmatic level, our economy is heavily dependent on new labor and new ideas, as does our culture if we are to stay connected to an increasingly globalized world. As the leader of the free world, it is critical that we center immigration issues in our national dialogue while finding common ground to enrich our nation and treat everyone with respect and compassion.

Our current Presidential administration has tried to fool Americans — all of us — by turning immigration into a problem to be solved rather than an opportunity for growth. They have turned this critical aspect of our culture into a wedge issue to promote the darkest recesses of nationalism. We are in desperate need of an administration that looks at all the sides of this complex issue.

Over the past four years, what has transpired is demonizing and terrorizing, even of those who legitimately seek asylum.

There are three main areas where immigration touches fundamental interests for everyone in America, whatever their heritage:

sto puede parecer una pregunta retórica, pero surge de una curiosidad genuina. ¿Es usted un estadounidense "real" si no tiene ojos azules o si habla con acento?

Por supuesto, sabemos que estas preguntas son ridículas porque la evidencia es abrumadora: los estadounidenses se parecen a todos.

Soy una latina. Mi familia es de Puerto Rico y pasé muchos años viviendo en Pennsylvania. Soy abogada, activista y fui embajadora de Estados Unidos. Yo también soy estadounidense.

We should see legal and regulated immigration for what it is — a way to keep our economy humming.

FOREIGN POLICY

This president has blackmailed our neighbors and threatened them over immigration, cutting off aid and, by doing so, making it much more difficult for them to address the root causes of migrant flows. He has alienated countries in Latin America while simultaneously soliciting hemispheric support in dealing with Venezuela and Nicaragua’s ongoing crises.

JOBS

We should see legal and regulated immigration for what it is — a way to keep our economy humming. A recession helps no one, and there is plenty of work to do to get industries back on track and repair our crumbling infrastructure. However, as we are already facing crippling farm labor shortages, what happens to our agriculture if our labor force is decimated, especially during an ongoing pandemic?

VALUES

The values we hold most dear are the words on the Statue of Liberty, which resonate for all of us.

Still, those values cannot be seen in denying asylum to gang violence victims, putting children in cages and separating families, or cutting funds to the Citizenship and Immigration Service to make the wait for intending citizens stretch to a year or more.

Americans are not just born; they are made —forged out of hard work and contributing to the greater good. Fair immigration policy will look at all dimensions of this issue and make the right choices that serve our interests and elevate our best selves. Joe Biden knows how to manage relations with our foreign allies, he will create jobs that build back our economy better than before, and he holds dear those values that have made America a place of inclusion and fairness.

I cannot speak for you, but I have had enough of hateful stereotypes and fearmongering. No more.

We must end the ridiculous simplification of who is a “real” American — whether you are lucky enough to be born here or you are resilient enough to move here, we are all Americans.

Deberíamos ver la inmigración legal y regulada por lo que es: una forma de mantener nuestra economía en pleno funcionamiento.

LA POLÍTICA EXTERIOR

Este presidente ha chantajeado a nuestros vecinos y los ha amenazado por la inmigración, cortando la ayuda y, al hacerlo, les ha dificultado mucho abordar las causas fundamentales de los flujos migratorios. Ha alejado a los países latinoamericanos al tiempo que solicita el apoyo hemisférico para hacer frente a las crisis en curso en Venezuela y Nicaragua.

Los valores que más apreciamos son las palabras en la Estatua de la Libertad, que resuenan para todos nosotros, pero esos valores no se pueden ver en negar asilo a las víctimas de la violencia de pandillas, poner niños en jaulas y separar familias, o recortar fondos a los Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración para hacer que la espera de los futuros ciudadanos se extienda a un año o más.

n this age of fighting for social and racial justice and coronavirus, it’s also important not to leave out those flipping society’s body standards on their heads. The Cuban entrepreneur Nadia Boujarwa is fighting precisely this through her start-up Dia & Co., a plus-size clothing brand and retailer that serves women who are size 14-32.

Boujarwa began the plus-sized community project when she could not find cute, stylish clothes in her own size.

Amid the ongoing pandemic, most in-person retailers have closed,

Boujarwa knew she was not the only one who had this problem and found a partner in her Harvard Business School classmate, Lydia Gilbert.

For 100 million plus-size women, it was a dream come true to find clothes that had the same fashion trends as other brands. The company, Dia & Co., works with some of the industry’s top brands, as well as young up-and-coming designers, to create a ‘unique style and shape.’

Ahead of the holiday season, Dia & Co. launched an online platform, the

Since 2015, she and Gilbert have been two empowered women that have built a diverse community. In addition to their styling services and clothing retailer, the company also features a Dia Style Box similar to makeup subscriptions IPSY, and Birchbox, except for plus-sized women.

Building empires of inclusivity are the new it thing, and they’re doing so in fashion.

he deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot in Pennsylvania was just a week before Nov. 3.

To prepare, the Philadelphia Convention Center was filled on Oct. 26 with sights and sounds it has never experienced before. The constant whirring of machines and the sounds of papers shuffling — all attributed to various scanners, sorters, and printers that will be used to count 250,000 mail-in ballots on Election Day. According to Philadelphia City Commissioner Lisa Deeley, Philly is leagues ahead, relative to other parts of the country, in ensuring that the mail-in voting process is secure, despite what others may say.

“Philadelphia has really embraced the mail-in voting at levels that other jurisdictions that have voted by mail, primarily, it’s taken them years to achieve a level that we have here in Philadelphia,” said Deeley.

“They’ll be under surveillance and under lock and key,” she stressed.

Ensuring the integrity of the machinery, and the mail-in voting process was at the core of the City Commissioner’s intent in offering a tour.

“With all of the negative stuff that’s out there in the atmosphere, generally generated by the president, gives people some doubt that this could happen. As you can see, it’s safe, secure, high-tech, and very impressive. And people need to see that to know that what Trump’s saying is not true,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney told AL DÍA. Many skeptics, especially Black and Latinx voters who doubt the process would rather risk showing up to vote in person, or not at all.

The first option is still viable despite the pandemic, but regarding the latter, Trump’s rhetoric surrounding mail-in voting — despite himself having voted via mail in the past — has contributed to the unease.

“I think the people should have confidence in the integrity of the election, that hasn’t been – unfortunately – something that put them in a position to be confident given all the rhetoric that’s been coming from a particular person, and allies of that NOVEMBER 4 - 11, 2020

particular person,” Philadelphia City Council President, Darrell Clarke told Al DÍA. To him, voting is the only way to fix the issues that have intensified over the last four years. Especially for Black and Latino demographics, he says there is no excuse to get out your vote.

“My position is, if you think there are issues with respect to the election, try and fix it, not complain about it,” Clarke continued. “This is important, elections are always important, and all demographics, it is your one opportunity.”

As for safety on Nov. 3, Mayor Kenney said his office has been coordinating with Philadelphia police to ensure safety, whatever the outcome, as there will surely be protests, especially if the current administration prevails “We do recognize that it’s going to be an emotional outburst one way or the other, and we’re prepared for it,” Kenney said.

he 2016 election showed how a razor-thin margin of voters could affect the lives of millions.

President Donald Trump won Pennsylvania by 44,000 votes, after over 6 million Pennsylvania voters showed up to the polls. It was enough to be one of the deciding factors solidifying Trump’s presidency.

This could happen again, but the Latinx vote’s influence could tip the scale in a handful of states: Pennsylvania — the

Victory hinges on winning Florida and Pennsylvania, and young Latinx voters could play a decisive role in these two “toss-up” states.

What’s most surprising is the demographic’s age. According to Census data, 40% of Latinx voters eligible to vote are 18-35, making Hispanics and Latinos among the youngest racial or ethnic group with a median age of 30.

Every 30 seconds, a young Latino in the United States turns 18, and this year their votes count more than ever as 2020 continues to prove the election could be the year Latinos, specifically young Latinx voters, will make or break the election.

And so far, we’re making it, confirming a 2020 study by Telemundo in partnership with Buzzfeed that was an in-depth study into a segment of the influential young voting bloc.

Key findings revealed 64% of young prospective voters “definitely” planned to vote in November, with 82% citing the Black Lives Matter movement as a motivating factor.

“Racial and ethnic social equality” was identified as the most important social or political issue for their generation by a majority of responders, with 16.6% identifying it as the top overall issue.

COVID-19 has also influenced their decisions. After all, the pandemic has affected Latinos at a disproportionate

rate compared to all other demographics in the United States. Of those surveyed, 83% say the pandemic has affected their health or finances, and nearly 48% have suffered because of job losses or pay cuts.

But the conflicting portion of the study highlighted young Latinos’ wavering allegiance— at the time. Over a third of the micro-demographic either described themselves as independent or undecided about their political affiliation. Half identified as Democrat, while 13% identified as Republican.

With such numbers and the issues highlighted, it’s impossible to connect to Latinx voters without first understanding the Latinx youth and the potential they carry as a voting bloc.

That’s especially with so much on the line, and the lack of respect witnessed over the last four years. Young Latino voters are both influential to their families and deeply tuned-in to the issues at hand.

This year has seen Latinx outreach on an unprecedented scale, through millions poured into micro-targeting ads, in-person visits to Latinx communities, and releasing Latinx-specific policies.

While everything remains uncertain regarding the election, there’s one thing that will not be forgotten in future elections, and that’s in regards to the growing power of the Latinx electorate, potentially driven by young people.

n looking back on his upbringing, Esteban Vera Jr. calls everything a “blessing.”

“Together, it takes a village sometimes to raise a child,” said Vera.

For him, that village was the block of Mutter and Cambria Streets in the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia.

His parents were proud Puerto Ricans who came to the city in their late teens. Vera’s dad worked in a factory for over 40 years to support the family, and his mom never worked on account of her poor health.

“We didn’t have a lot of money,” he said, “but we were a modest family.”

In addition to the importance of school and respect for all, Vera’s parents also taught him the “blessing” of citizenship.

It’s a coveted designation that millions come to the U.S. annually to one day achieve, and one his family already had thanks to their Puerto Rican heritage.

“A lot of people can really make a better life for their families,” said Vera Jr. In his dad’s eyes, citizenship was an opportunity to better his family’s situation and the lives of others in general going through similar circumstances.

That’s a mindset Vera Jr. would carry throughout his whole life.

“Don’t waste an opportunity,” he remembers his dad saying, “because you might have it to help somebody else.”

TO BOSNIA AND BACK

Vera Jr.’s first opportunity to do so out of high school was in the military. It was a dream he had ever since he was six years old.

At that age, he remembers watching an Army commercial on TV and breaking the news to his mom.

“I told her I was going to join,” said Vera Jr. In the military, Vera was deployed to Bosnia on a peacekeeping mission.

“We considered ourselves the world police,” he said.

Still, despite the values he came into the military with from his parents, Vera said the experience had “better lessons” to teach him.

At the time of his deployment in the mid-90s, Bosnia was in the middle of a civil war that featured the worst ethnic cleansing since the Holocaust.

“We see the bad sometimes in our own country, but over there, you see people with no shoes walk around with AK47s,” said Vera Jr. In another instance, he remembers a little boy that would come by his squad’s post from time to time, sometimes with his baby sister also in tow. He didn’t know any English but would still interact with the soldiers any chance he got.

“All he would know is ‘Pepsi,’” said Vera Jr., who would oblige the boy’s request whenever he came with a Pepsi and a Snickers bar.

One day, the boy stopped coming, and Vera Jr. later found out that he and his sister hadn’t made it out of their situation, caught in the crossfire of war.

“To this day, I still remember that little boy,” he said.

MEETING LABORER’S LOCAL #57

When Vera Jr. came back from the military, he went into construction work with his uncles.

They’d been members of the same construction union since he was a kid.

Early on, he was attracted to the work the organization did in the community.

“I knew they always helped people,

and I would hear stories about the things they would do,” said Vera Jr. The union also provided Vera with a similar chain of command and structure to the military.

He initially joined Laborer’s Local #57 on a volunteer basis in 2005 while still working construction. In two years, he was offered the position of organizer as a result of all his volunteer work.

In the role, Vera Jr. spent long hours fighting on behalf of exploited workers, demanding their rights, better work conditions, and fair pay.

WORKING TOWARDS HISTORY

That grind cemented his ascent up the leadership ladder of Local #57.

“I think I fell into it,” Vera Jr. said of entering union leadership.

Vera’s rise in many ways, followed in the footsteps of former Philadelphia City Councilmember Juan Ramos, who was a major Latino figure in the labor movement throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Ramos’ union was Laborers Local #332, which he was a member of for more than 20 years. He rode that membership to political office in the early 2000s.

Before Vera could assume the higher role of board member in Local #57, he attended the now-defunct National Labor College in Silver Springs, Maryland, to prepare for more new tasks like negotiating contracts.

A year after being a board member, Vera Jr. was installed as the recording secretary at the union in charge of maintaining all of the organization’s correspondences, reports, and grievances from members.

Given his success negotiating contracts, he was also named a delegate to the Laborer’s Council of the Metropolitan Area of Philadelphia and Vicinity.

In 2016, Vera Jr. made history when he was named the business manager of

Local #57. He is the first Latino labor leader of a major union in the Philadelphia region and is using that title to push his own and other unions towards a future of more inclusivity.

“I’m hoping we’re leading the way when it comes to that sense,” he said.

DRIVING HOME DIVERSITY

At the helm of Laborer’s Local #57, Vera Jr. represents workers across several industries, including those in heavy highway and road construction, lumberyards, scrap yards, cemeteries, roofing, and roadway flagging.

Of the close to 3,000 members, Vera Jr. estimates a third are Hispanic or Latino, a third African-American, and a third caucasian with other nationalities also mixed in.

“Everywhere I go to speak, I always boast about the diversity of our local,” he said. “When it comes to the industry as a whole with the other unions, that’s not the case.”

Every month, Vera Jr. meets with the other unions’ heads to talk about the diversity of the workforce, among other issues.

“I try to hold people accountable,” he said. “If I see a lack of Latinos or African-Americans, I’ll bring that up in a heartbeat.”

Overall, he said the other union leaders and contractors are receptive and aware of the issue, but change is slow.

“We’re headed in the right direction,” said Vera Jr. That comes amid a long history of racism within Philadelphia’s labor unions.

RECKONING WITH RACISM

It’s also something Vera Jr. experienced in his rise to the top and as a leader. He said that, when he was a newly-ap-

pointed leader, many individuals on the outside judged him for being Latino.

Over time, however, Vera said many are now his biggest allies, having won them over with his work.

“The best way to handle it is to show who you are,” he said. “Not go down a negative path, but try to prove your work ethic.”

Vera Jr.’s position is also voted by the membership, and he was unopposed the last time he ran.

“It’s a testament to the member being content,” he said. “We’re pretty tight.”

ALL FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Throughout it all, the members sit at the heart of what he and the union do for each other and the community.

“It’s taking care of our home,” said Vera Jr. Amid COVID-19, Laborer’s Local #57’s community efforts have never been more important.

The organization has partnered with the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Department to host food drives and several other community organizations to help provide everything from school supplies to information around voting in the 2020 Election.

On Vera Jr.’s end, the efforts into the community from the jump have always hearkened back to his dad’s words of helping others. Many of those in the community are also the next generation, just in need of a little help here and there.

“I was that one kid in the neighborhood at one point,” he said.

As a union leader, Vera Jr. is now the role model for those same kids.

“That one kid that you’re helping out could be the next leader of the city, or the state, or the country,” said Vera Jr. Given all that 2020’s thrown, that leader may be just what the U.S. and world needs.

“Le dije que me iba a alistar”, dijo Vera Jr. En el ejército, Vera fue desplegado a Bosnia en una misión de mantenimiento de la paz.

“Nos considerábamos la policía mundial”, dijo.

Aún así, a pesar de los valores con los que llegó al ejército, Vera dijo que la experiencia tenía “mejores lecciones” que enseñarle.

En el momento de su despliegue a mediados de los 90, Bosnia estaba en medio de una guerra civil que tuvo la peor limpieza étnica desde el Holocausto.

“A veces vemos lo malo en nuestro propio país, pero allí se ve gente sin zapatos caminando con AK-47”, dijo Vera Jr. En otro caso, recuerda a un niño que pasaba por el puesto de su escuadrón de vez en cuando, a veces con su hermanita menor también a cuestas. No sabía nada de inglés pero aún así interactuaba con los soldados en cualquier momento.

“Todo lo que sabía era 'Pepsi'”, dijo Vera Jr., quien complacía el pedido del niño cada vez que venía con una Pepsi y una barra de Snickers.

Un día, el chico dejó de venir, y Vera Jr. se enteró más tarde de que él y su hermana no habían salido de su situación, atrapados en el fuego cruzado de la guerra.

“Hasta el día de hoy, todavía recuerdo a ese niño”, dijo.

CONOCIENDO EL LOCAL 57

Cuando Vera Jr. regresó del ejército, se dedicó a la construcción con sus tíos.

Fueron miembros del mismo sindicato de la construcción desde que era un niño.

Al principio, se sintió atraído por el trabajo que la organización hacía en la comunidad.

Inicialmente se unió al Laborer's Local #57 como voluntario en 2005 mientras aún trabajaba en la construcción. En dos años, le ofrecieron el puesto de organizador como resultado de todo su trabajo voluntario.

En este puesto, Vera Jr. pasó largas horas luchando en nombre de los trabajadores explotados, exigiendo sus derechos, mejores condiciones de trabajo y un salario justo.

TRABAJANDO PARA HACER HISTORIA

Ese trabajo consolidó su ascenso en la escalera de liderazgo del Local 57.

“Creo que caí en ella”, dijo Vera Jr. al entrar en el liderazgo del sindicato.

El ascenso de Vera en muchos sentidos, siguió los pasos del ex concejal de la ciudad de Filadelfia Juan Ramos, quien fue una figura latina importante en el movimiento laboral durante los años 70, 80 y 90.

El sindicato de Ramos era el Laborers Local #332, del cual fue miembro por más de 20 años. Llevó esa membresía a un cargo político a principios de la década del 2000.

Antes de asumir el papel de miembro de la junta en el sindicato, asistió a la ya desaparecida Escuela Nacional del Trabajo en Silver Springs, Maryland, para prepararse para más tareas nuevas como la negociación de contratos.

Un año después de ser miembro de la junta, Vera Jr. fue instalado como secretario de registros en el sindicato a cargo de mantener toda la correspondencia, informes y quejas de los miembros de la organización.

Dado su éxito en la negociación de contratos, también fue nombrado delegado del Consejo de los Trabajadores del Área Metropolitana de Filadelfia y sus alrededores.

En 2016, Vera Jr. hizo historia cuando fue nombrado gerente de negocios del Local #57. Es el primer líder laboral latino

de un sindicato importante en la región de Filadelfia y está usando ese título para impulsar su propio sindicato y el de otros hacia un futuro de mayor inclusión.

“Espero que estemos liderando el camino en ese sentido”, dijo.

IMPULSAR LA DIVERSIDAD EN CASA

Al frente del Local 57 de los trabajadores, Vera Jr. representa a los trabajadores de varias industrias, incluyendo las de construcción de carreteras y caminos, madereras, depósitos de chatarra, cementerios, techos y señalización de caminos.

De los cerca de 3.000 miembros, Vera Jr. estima que un tercio son hispanos o latinos, un tercio afroamericanos y un tercio caucásicos con otras nacionalidades también mezcladas.

“Dondequiera que voy a hablar, siempre me jacto de la diversidad de nuestro local”, dijo. “Cuando se trata de la industria en su conjunto con los otros sindicatos, no es así”.

Cada mes, Vera Jr. se reúne con los jefes de los otros sindicatos para hablar de la diversidad de la fuerza de trabajo, entre otros temas.

“Trato de hacer que la gente se responsabilice”, dijo. “Si veo una falta de latinos o afroamericanos, lo mencionaré en un abrir y cerrar de ojos”.

En general, dijo que los demás líderes sindicales y contratistas son receptivos y conscientes del tema, pero el cambio es lento.

“Vamos en la dirección correcta”, dijo Vera Jr. Eso viene en medio de una larga historia de racismo dentro de los sindicatos de Filadelfia.

RECONOCIENDO EL RACISMO

También es algo que Vera Jr. experimentó en su ascenso a la cima y como líder. Dijo que, cuando era un líder recién nombrado, muchos individuos de fuera lo juzgaban por ser latino.

Sin embargo, con el tiempo, Vera dijo que muchos son ahora sus mayores aliados, habiéndoselos ganado con su trabajo.

"La mejor manera de manejarlo es mostrar quién eres", dijo. "No ir por un camino negativo, sino tratar de demostrar tu ética de trabajo".

La posición de Vera Jr. también es votada por los miembros, y no tuvo oposición la última vez que se postuló.

“Es un testimonio de que el miembro está contento”, dijo. “Estamos muy unidos”.

DÁNDOLO TODO POR LA PRÓXIMA GENERACIÓN

Durante todo este proceso, los miembros tienen en el centro de sus prioridades lo que él y la unión hacen por el otro y la comunidad.

“Es cuidar de nuestro hogar”, dijo Vera Jr. En medio del COVID-19, los esfuerzos comunitarios del Local 57 nunca han sido más importantes.

La organización se ha asociado con el Departamento del Sheriff de Filadelfia para realizar campañas de recolección de alimentos y con varias otras organizaciones comunitarias para ayudar a proporcionar todo tipo de información, desde material escolar hasta información sobre la votación en las elecciones de 2020.

En el caso de Vera Jr., los esfuerzos de la comunidad desde el principio siempre han escuchado las palabras de su padre de ayudar a los demás. Muchos de los que están en la comunidad son también la próxima generación, sólo necesitan un poco de ayuda aquí y allá.

atino immigrants are not here just to work from sunrise to sunset. We have a voice in shaping the idiosyncrasies of this country and we raise that voice through our literature," said Venezuelan writer Naida Saavedra, professor of Latin American literature at Worcester State University, in an interview with Milenio.

novelists like Elena Garro. In the New Latino Boom, women “have a crucial role.” Not only are they authors, but also, as Saavedra explains, publishers, intellectuals and magazine directors, like journalist and screenwriter Maritza Bafile or Rosalía Reyes, the coordinator of the New York Book Fair.

But also, assures the researcher, who has dedicated herself to studying these new Latinx voices that are found mainly in cities like Chicago, Miami or New York — where there are a good number of Spanish-language publishers — the New Latino Boom does not focus on the novel as if it were the jewel in the crown, but covers more genres such as the essay, the short story, the chronicle or poetry.

According to Saavedra, the movement had its beginnings in Chicago in the 90s, and there was a connection between the artists who would end up taking part.

In New York, there is a strong presence of Spanish in its universities and Miami is home to many Latino authors and a flourishing culture of literary events, fairs and contests.

“It is a unique literary movement in the United States whose emblem is the Spanish language. In the current political environment and in view of the frontal attack directed at everything that is not in the majority, writing and publishing in Spanish in this country is an act of resistance,” says the professor and writer, who maintains that in this context more than any other, these authors play a capital role in the country.

“The artists of the movement, who arrived after adolescence, are the archetype attacked in the presidential discourse of these times. All of them have chosen Spanish for their creative work, a tool to show that those of us who speak Spanish are part of this country and that our language is important,” she adds.

“In the New Latino Boom, the writers are at the same time actors. They are not just writers, they are also disseminators of their work and promote the work of others; they are publishers, critics, reviewers and cultural agents. This has allowed Latin Americans living here not to have to look to Spain, Mexico or Argentina to publish their work”.

#NILOCASNISOLAS

While Mexican and Chicano literature has contributed much to this literary boom, with great names such as Sandra Cisneros or Gloria Anzaldúa, other authors who have joined the movement of voices in Spanish are the novelist and playwright from Chicago, Raúl Dorantes, and poet Omar Villasana, founder of Katakana, which spreads the work of Mexican, Cuban and Venezuelan writers, among others.

Since the publication of #NewLatinoBoom: Cartografía de la narrativa en español en EE.UU., more artists have been recognized as part of the boom and even, in the case of writers like Maria Mínguez Arias (Patricia Sigue Aquí), the hashtag #NiLocasNiSolas was created to claim that all these authors writing in Spanish from the United States formed a network: the New Latino Boom.

Mientras que en Nueva York hay una fuerte presencia del español en las universidades y en Miami residen muchos autores latinx y una floreciente cultura de eventos literarios, ferias y concursos.

“Es un movimiento literario único y propio de Estados Unidos cuyo emblema es el idioma español. En el ambiente político actual y en vista del ataque frontal dirigido a todo lo que no es mayoritario, escribir y publicar en español en este país es un acto de resistencia”, afirma la investigadora, quien sostiene que en este contexto más que en ningún otro estos autores juegan un papel capital en el país.

“Los artistas del movimiento, quienes llegaron después de la adolescencia, son el arquetipo atacado en el discurso presidencial de estos tiempos. Todos ellos han escogido el español para su labor creativa, una herramienta para mostrar que los que hablamos español somos parte de este país y que nuestro idioma es importante”, añade.

“En el New Latino Boom, los escritores son al mismo tiempo actores. No se dedican sólo a escribir, también son difusores de su trabajo y promueven la obra de otros; son editores, críticos, reseñistas y agentes culturales. Esto ha permitido que los latinoamericanos radicados aquí no tengan que mirar hacia España, México o Argentina para publicar sus obras”.

#NILOCASNISOLAS

Mientras que la literatura mexicana y chicana ha aportado mucho a este boom literario, con grandes nombres como el de Sandra Cisneros o Gloria Anzaldúa, otros autores que se suman a este movimiento de voces en español son el novelista y dramaturgo de Chicago Raúl Dorantes o el poeta Omar Villasana, fundador de Katakana, que difunde la obra de escritores mexicanos, cubanos y venezolanos, entre otros.

eonardo Padura has the virtue of the best writers. He can make us walk through the darkest alleys of Havana with detective Mario Conde, who investigates the vital twists and turns of Trotsky's Catalan killer.

His latest novel, Como polvo en el viento (Like Dust in the Wind, Tusquets 2020), traces Cuban history through the lives of a group of friends who met in the 1960s at the University of Havana and, with the exception of the group's linchpin, Clara, went into exile.

It is also the story of Adela, a young Cuban American living in New York who perceives her origins are not as she was told.

ENGLISH It's a novel, in short, that deals with love and indifference, friendship, over and above traditions, infidelities, and obstacles. But also, of course, about a homeland and the complex relationship we have with it.

“A homeland is a place, a city, a house, but it is also a concept that does not always manifest itself with the same qualities, even when some of them are permanent,” said Leonardo Padura, for whom the emigrants and expatriates have more complicated links with origin because, as recalled in Como polvo en el viento, “no one leaves the place where he is happy.”

Lo mismo nos hace recorrer los callejones más oscuros de La Habana acompañando al detective Mario Conde, que investiga los vericuetos vitales del asesino catalán de Trotsky. Su última novela, Como polvo en el viento (ed. Tusquets, 2020), recorre la historia cubana a través de las vidas de un grupo de amigos que se conocieron en los años sesenta en la Universidad de La Habana y que, a excepción de Clara, eje del grupo, se fueron al exilio.

También es la historia de Adela, una joven cubanoamericana que vive en Nueva York y que intuye que sus orígenes no son como le contaron.

Una novela, en suma, que trata sobre amores y desamores, y sobre la amistad, por encima de tradiciones, infidelidades y obstáculos. Pero también, supuesto, de la patria y la compleja relación que tenemos con ella. “La patria es un lugar, una ciudad, una casa, pero es también un concepto que no se manifiesta siempre con las mismas cualidades, aun cuando algunas de ellas son permanentes”, dice Leonardo Padura, para quien los emigrados y exiliados tienen vínculos más complicados con el origen pues, como se recuerda en Como polvo en el viento, “nadie abandona el sitio donde es feliz”.

ne day I will have my own house, but I won't ever forget who I am and where I came from," says Esperanza Cordero, the young Chicano protagonist in The House on Mango Street.

It's a novel written by Sandra Cisneros and when it was published in 1984, was a turning point for Chicano literature and, by extension, American literature as well. It made us reflect on race, gender and class through a kind of memoir and story of initiation that a young American Latinx could identify.

“I started writing stories about the lives of my students and introduced them to my childhood neighborhood,” explained the author, who was working at a school in Chicago at the time, where she grew up.

“I feel that as a writer I have the gift of expressing what other people feel, and being able to speak for them, bringing clarity and building bridges between communities that don't understand each other,” she added.

Cisneros, photographed in 1988 by iconic photographer Al Rendon, sits on the steps of her house, next to her dog, and turns to the neighborhood as if conversing with it. Her relaxed pose and appearance reminds us of a sort of proud disciple of Frida Kahlo.

The Chicana is one of the writers whose photographs and other personal items and works are featured in the exhibition, Her Story: A Century of Women Writers, which is being held at the National Portrait Gallery until Jan. 18.

It feautures some 20 female writers who became influential narrators of realities that until now, were not considered great works of American literature.

Like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Anne Sexton, Joyce Carol Oates, Maya Angelou, Lorraine Hansberry or Ayn Rand, who won, like Sandra Cisneros, some of the most important literary awards of the 20th century.

“This is a very highly decorated group,” historian Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw told Smithsonian Magazine. "And the objects in the exhibition are also very diverse. We have sculptures, paintings, drawings and photographs. So it really provides the viewer with a strong cross section . . . of 100 years [of] women from many different backgrounds.”

One of the exhibition's most radical authors is undoubtedly African-American writer, playwright and activist, Lorraine Hansberry, who despite dying young, made great contributions to the fight against racism and provided a fierce criticism that is still very much alive today.

Una novela escrita por la Sandra Cisneros que cuando apareció publicada en 1984 supuso un punto de inflexión en la literatura chicana y, por extensión, también en la norteamericana. Haciéndonos reflexionar sobre la raza, el género y la clase a través de una suerte de memoir e historia de iniciación con la que podían identificarse los jóvenes latinx estadounidenses.

“Empecé a escribir historias sobre las vidas de mis estudiantes y las introduje en el vecindario de mi infancia”, explicó en 2016 la autora, que por aquel tiempo trabajaba en una escuela en Chicago, ciudad donde creció.

“Siento que como escritora tengo el don de expresar lo que las otras personas sienten, y poder hablar por ellos, aportando claridad y tendiendo puentes entre comunidades que no se entienden las unas a las otras”, añadió.

Cisneros, retrata en 1988 por el icónico fotógrafo Al Rendon, está sentada en los escalones de su casa, junto a su mascota y vuelta hacia el vecindario, como si conversase con él. Su pose relajada y su apariencia nos recuerda a una suerte de discípula orgullosa de Frida Kahlho.

La chicana es una de las escritoras cuyas fotografías y otros objetos personales y obras figuran en la exposición Her Story: A Century of Women Writers, que acoge la National Portrait Gallery hasta el 18 de enero.

Una veintena de autoras que devinieron un influyentes narradoras de realidades que hasta entonces estaban muy lejos de aparecer en los grandes obras de la literatura americana.

Como Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Anne Sexton, Joyce Carol Oates, Maya Angelou, Lorraine Hansberry o Ayn Rand, quienes ganaron, al igual que Sandra Cisneros, algunos de los galardones literarios más importantes del siglo XX. “Es un grupo muy bien armado”, explica al Smithsonian Magazine la historiadora Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw. “Y los objetos de la exposición también son muy diversos. The image was taken when the activist was 29 years old — five years before her death — and as her hard-hitting play about racial segregation had premiered on Broadway, directed by Sidney Poitier.

In fact, Lorraine Hansberry was the first Black woman whose play was produced on Broadway, becoming a pioneer.

The writer lived through racial violence since she was a child, when her family moved out of the neighborhood, defying Chicago's ghetto neighborhoods and setting a precedent, even though they had to suffer the attacks of angry white mobs, as reflected in Raisin.

Other images are almost like heartbeats.

They respond to an internal impulse of the writer herself, as if the landscape around her did not exist or was confusing and unattainable for the protagonist. This is the case in Anthony Barboza's portrait of Maxine Hong Kingston, which shows the Chinese-American in a blurred room.

This accentuates, according to the curators, the feeling of liminality present in Hong Kingston's writing, who always felt trapped between folklore, small and American culture.

Her Story is, in short, a puzzle of snapshots that tell of celebrated women writers and also a journey that tells of the great contributions of women who, from race, class and gender, constructed the “other” story of the real America.

PECO currently serves more than 1.6 million electric customers and 532,000 natural gas customers in the region while employing more than 2,900 workers.

As the region has become more heterogeneous, PECO’s commitment to addressing the needs of its diverse employees and customers has increased, as well.

Through several different community involvement efforts and initiatives, PECO has made tremendous contributions to all the communities it serves throughout the region.

PECO’s commitment to giving back to its customers has also been largely highlighted by its actions following the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March, PECO assisted several thousands of customers financially impacted by the pandemic by extending its support policies. This expansion included suspending service disconnections for non-payments, waiving new late fees, as well as reconnecting customers who had been disconnected before the pandemic.

In addition to this, PECO expanded its payment options and financial assistance programs to help customers pay down any outstanding balances that may have increased during the pandemic.

With its millions of customers having different sets of needs and concerns, PECO has made it a point of emphasis to address each of them. Those are just some examples of how the company has given back and made a significant impact on the lives of its customers throughout the region.
