T

ENGLISH he week of November 3, 2020, has been a metaphysical experience for the United States and the en-

tire world.

U.S. citizens went to the polls under the shadow of a tsunami of early votes that would be counted later.

The tension increased to the point of concentrating in four days all that we have lived for four years.

Disinformation, aggression, tenacity, but, above all, hope.

We knew that the majority of the country wanted a radical change in the way we do politics, the way we lead our lives, and how we relate to each other. Although Joe Biden wasn't the first choice of many, he was the only one. And, with him, the way to make history.

Latinos in the United States made their presence felt in an unprecedented way, breaking participation records, and with a young bloc that exrpessed a never-before-seen political conscience.

Women of colors, led by the example of figures like Stacey Abrams, moNOVEMBER 11 - 18, 2020

bilized their communities and proved once again to be the backbone of democracy in the country.

If four years ago we spoke of the need to feel represented at the decision-making tables, today we realize the real strength of our families and communities, who, when faced with a life and death decision, delivered and stepped out to take back the reins of their future.

That future that we live today, and that we make every second of our lives.

This week’s edition is dedicated to that new generation of Latino leaders, victorious or not, who, inspired

by Bronx Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortéz, have taken the lead in moving the nation toward inclusion and proper democratic exercise.

After all, victory in the White House is only a symptom of a social revolution of conscience, determined to turn the page and begin a new chapter, more confident, more determined, and in full awareness of the work just beginning.

a semana del 3 de noviembre del 2020 ha sido una experiencia metafísica para Estados Unidos, y para el mundo entero.

Los ciudadanos estadounidenses acudían a las urnas, bajo la sombra de un tsunami de votos adelantados que serían contabilizados a posteriori. La tensión aumentó al punto de concentrar en cuatro días todo lo que hemos vivido durante cuatro años.

Desinformación, agresividad, tenacidad, pero, sobre todo, esperanza.

Sabíamos que la mayoría del país quería un cambio radical en la manera de hacer política, en la manera de llevar nuestras vidas, y en la manera de relacionarnos los unos con los otros. Aunque Joe Biden no fue la primera opción de muchos, era la única. Y, con él, la manera de marcar un hito histórico.

Los Latinos en Estados Unidos se hicieron sentir de una manera sin precedentes, rompiendo récords de participación, y con un bloque joven con una conciencia política jamás antes vista.

Las mujeres de color, guiadas por el ejemplo de personajes como Stacey

Abrams, movilizaron a sus comunidades, y demostraron nuevamente ser la columna vertebral de la democracia en el país.

Si hace cuatro años hablábamos de la necesidad de sentirnos representados en las mesas de decisiones, hoy nos damos cuenta de la verdadera fuerza de nuestras familias y comunidades, quienes, a la hora de enfrentarse a una decisión de vida o muerte, cumplieron y salieron a retomar las riendas de su futuro.

Ese futuro que vivimos hoy, y que hacemos cada segundo de nuestras vidas.

Nuestra edición de esta semana está dedicada a esa nueva generación de líderes Latinos, victoriosos o no, quienes, inspirados por el fenómeno de la representante del Bronx, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortéz, han tomado la batuta para dirigir a la nación hacia la inclusión, y al verdadero ejercicio democrático.

Después de todo, la victoria en la Casa Blanca es tan sólo un síntoma de una revolución social y de conciencia, decidida a pasar la página y empezar un nuevo capítulo, más seguros, más decididos, y en plena conciencia del trabajo que apenas comienza.

na Irma Rivera Lassén bursts into Puerto Rico as Senator, with the profile of an experienced activist, defender of women's rights, and especially aware of the colonial heritage problems that have crossed her country for decades. She is the spokesperson for the Citizens' Victory Movement, which represents a break with bipartisan practices and, in her own words, aims to “promote equality and equity” through economic development and decolonization.

The Caribbean island ofPuerto Rico has been hit with various crises and problems for several years. Some of them are related to its location since, unfortunately, it has been suffering from earthquakes, hurricanes, lack of supplies, and the same global pandemic that is affecting the world. But many of its most pressing problems have a profoundly political core, fueled by a deep economic debt and a bipartisan system left stranded in the debate of its final full integration or continuation as a free associated state.

Algunas de ellas relacionadas con su ubicación pues, por desgracia, ha venido sufriendo terremotos, huracanes, falta de suministros y la misma pandemia global que nos afecta a todos. The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico has been dragging on various crises and severe problems for several years. voters participated much more than their representatives and, if anything, had the option of making small changes in such stultifying dynamics. There is no country globally, either European or American, that has benefited from a two-party system. Statistically speaking, it hijacks the plurality of options of authentic democracy in dangerous blackmail between lesser evils.

Therefore, in the elections of 2020, citizens had other alternatives to the New Progressive Party and the Popular Democratic Party that went far beyond the already significant achievement of breaking its dynamic and presented a commitment to representation and intersectionality. It is worth remembering that, deep down, both parties have defended conservative policies and that this was the first time that up to 25 openly LGBTQ+ candidates were running.

er and president of the Citizens' Victory Movement, founded in 2019 as an anti-colonial platform.

The lawyer and activist represents the way global changes in feminist politics are coming to the island, aware of patriarchal and conservative stigmas, very attentive to the protection of LGBTQ+ rights, and children who for decades suffered severe discrimination in addition to institutional white racism. Lassén is a member of the Advisory Council of the Network of Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean, and Diaspora Women.

She is also a Doctor of Law and has participated in several trials with which she has gradually recovered part of the rich legacy of the women of Puerto Rico.

But Lassen is not the only sign of change, although perhaps the most important. Joanne Rodríguez Veve of the Proyecto Dignidad party has also been elected as a representative, and the old parties have presented openly LGBTQ+ selected candidates such as Jorge Báez Pagán (New Progressive Party), Jorge Emmanuel, Miguel “Ricky” Méndez or Edgardo Cruz Velez.

La isla caribeña de Puerto Rico lleva varios años arrastrando diversos tipos de crisis y graves problemáticas. votaban mucho más que a sus representantes y, si acaso, contaban con la opción de pequeñas modificaciones en tan anquilosadas dinámicas. No hay ninguna clase de país en el globo, ni europeo ni americano, al que le haya beneficiado un sistema bipartidista, que estadísticamente hablando secuestra la pluralidad de opciones de la auténtica democracia en un peligroso chantaje entre males menores.

Por ello, en las elecciones de este 2020 los ciudadanos contaban con otras alternativas al Partido Nuevo Progresista y al Partido Popular Democrático que iban mucho más allá del ya importante logro de romper su dinámica y suponen una apuesta por la representación e interseccionalidad. Conviene recordar que, en el fondo, ambos partidos han defendido políticas conservadoras y que esta era la primera ocasión en la que se presentaban hasta 25 candidatos abiertamente LGBTQ+.

Ana Irma Rivera Lassén se convierte así en la primera legisladora puertorriqueña que logra marcar una ruptura histórica al ser elegida como una de los once Senadores por Acumulación, no sólo como representante abiertamente lesbiana sino

como adalid y presidenta del Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana, fundado en 2019 como plataforma anticolonial.

Esta abogada y activista representa el modo en que llegan a la isla los cambios globales en política feminista, consciente de los estigmas patriarcales y conservadores, muy atentos a la protección de los derechos LGBTQ+ y de la infancia que durante décadas sufrieron una severa discriminación sumados al racismo institucional blanco. Lassén forma parte del Consejo Consultivo de la Red de Mujeres Afrolatinoamericanas, Afrocaribeñas y de la Diáspora. Es también Doctora en Derecho y ha participado en varios ensayos con los que poco a poco recuperar parte del rico legado de las mujeres de Puerto Rico.

Pero Lássen no es la única señal de cambios, aunque tal vez sí la más importante. También ha sido elegida como representante Joanne Rodríguez Veve del partido Proyecto Dignidad y los viejos partidos han presentado a candidatos electos abiertamente LGBTQ+ como Jorge Báez Pagán (Partido Nuevo Progresista), Jorge Emmanuel, Miguel “Ricky” Méndez o Edgardo Cruz Velez.

s poll workers tirelessly counted votes in Pennsylvania, activists who have spent the summer and fall marching in the streets demanding justice and equality and holding officials accountable took to the streets again on November 4, one day after Election Day. The march this time addressed several issues, including the pending election results across the country, making sure that every vote was counted, and the body-camera images of the police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr. that were also released on the evening of November 4.

Signs went up in the air in front of City Hall, with one saying, "All Eyes on PA. The whole world is watching.”

The march’s organizers were the Black Radical Collective of Philadelphia and the Social Alternative, among other groups.

Activists from both groups stopped during the march to speak next to a painted and decorated truck with hearts that followed the procession.

Philadelphia Councilwoman Kendra Brooks also spoke at the march in support of her message.

“This is about us. The people are taking control of our democracy, our city, our country, and demanding that our voices be heard, and we will not stop until every vote is counted. We will not stop until we have the country we want. We will not stop until we

ENGLISH leave Trump,” he said.

As the protesters walked down Market Street and around City Hall, they met with Black Lives Matter organizers in front of the statue of Octavio Catto. The location was not random. It was intended to send a clear message about the rejection of Walter Wallace Jr., the 27-year-old Black man who was shot by police officers on October 26 while having a mental health episode.

The march continued down Market Street and turned onto 3rd Street, stopping on Race Street, where the crowd was met by a barricade of police offices on bicycles.

Outside the home of Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, activists spoke of the release of the body-camera images and insisted that the culprits take responsibility.

Philadelphia is not the only city that saw demonstrations last night.

New York and Chicago also held protests.

However, the City of Brotherly Love had the attention of the whole world this election year, not only for having given the final result to the elections but also because it became the epicenter of the social and cultural movement that wanted to make it clear that the effort does not end with the elections.

The feeling in the streets was that of the need to move forward and transform the country’s political and social situation, one drumbeat at a time.

ientras los trabajadores electorales contaban incansablemente los votos en Pensilvania, los activistas que han pasado el verano y el otoño marchando por las calles exigiendo justicia e igualdad y haciendo responsables a los funcionarios, salieron a las calles de nuevo el 4 de noviembre, un día después del día de las elecciones.

La marcha esta vez abordó varios temas, incluyendo los resultados electorales pendientes en todo el país, asegurándose de que cada voto fuera contado, y las imágenes de la cámara corporal del tiroteo policial de Walter Wallace Jr. que también fueron publicadas en la tarde del 4 de noviembre.

Mientras los manifestantes caminaban por la calle Market y alrededor del ayuntamiento, se encontraron con los organizadores de Black Lives Matter frente a la estatua de Octavio Catto. El lugar no fue al azar, ya que se pretendía enviar un mensaje claro sobre el rechazo de Walter Wallace Jr., el hombre negro de 27 años al que dispararon los agentes de policía el 26 de octubre mientras tenía un episodio de salud mental.

La marcha continuó por la calle Market y giró hacia la calle 3, deteniéndose en la calle Race, donde la multitud fue recibida por una barricada de oficinas de policía en bicicleta.

t least 1,006 openly LGBTQ people ran or are running for office in 2020 – the most in history – and a 41% jump since the last midterm election in 2018, when 716 openly LGBTQ candidates ran. At least 574 LGBTQ candidates appeared on the general election ballot in November, up from 432 in 2018, a 33% increase, according to a report by Out on the Ballot.

The landmark wins came not in only blue but also red states such as Tennessee, where Republican Eddie Mannis, who is gay, and Democrat Torrey Harris, who identifies as bisexual, won seats in the state House to become the first openly LGBTQ members of that legislature, AP reported.

According to the LGBTQ Victory Fund, which recruits and supports LGBTQ candidates, that leaves only Alaska, Louisiana and Mississippi as states that have never elected an LGBTQ legislator.

Since 2016, numerous trans-inclusive protections have been barred, including allowing homeless transgender individuals to seek shelter, the disapproval of those who identify as trans to enlist in the military, and, most recently, a halt on transgender civil rights and protections regarding access to healthcare.

Administrative discrimination by the Trump Administration has not idly stood alone. Rollback protection by the Education and Justice Departments has also placed trans folks in compromising positions, including rescinding Obama-era rulings to allow transgender students to use bathrooms of their choice and the dismissal of inmate protections in federal prisons to protect trans individuals housed in male-only facilities.

ENGLISH In short, the glass ceiling is cracking and shattering new heights. Sarah McBride, a 30-year-old LGBTQ activist, and Delaware state senator, is leading the effort.

McBride, who won Tuesday’s elections, is soon-to-be the most powerful openly trans-lawmaker in the country.

According to the Associated Press, Torres won by a landslide of over 88% of votes compared to Republican Patrick Delices, who only earned 11.8% of the vote.

If not to further understand the voting bloc moving forward, this must be done so the nation isn’t blindsided by the Republican Puerto Rican voter turnout in Florida, for instance, or how Mexican-American voters in Arizona were able to accomplish such a feat as flipping the state blue for the first time in 24 years.

DECISIVE OPPOSITE ENDS

The biggest surprise thus far in this election cycle was that Arizona went Democratic.

The state has long been lauded to be firmly red, but Democrats and Republicans’ voter gap has been closing in recent years. Now the cards have aligned to flip.

And within those cards were Mexican-American voters.

The story spans years, but the turning point is the state’s growing power of Latinx youth. This mainly came down to Mexican-American voters’ rising electoral power in the state and increased Latinx voter registration by the thousands.

In Florida, on the other hand, the perspective was controversial.

“We’ve been sounding the alarm about Dem vulnerabilities w/ Latinos for a long, long time,” wrote Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on the early, yet telling results in Florida Tuesday night.

She echoes the words of former Sen. Bernie Sanders Latino strategist, Chuck Rocha, whose fears were confirmed with Florida’s results: That Joe Biden’s underperformance with the Latinx voting bloc signals a struggling connection on many fronts.

“There is a strategy and a path, but the necessary effort simply hasn’t been put in,” AOC continued.

Latinx voters’ influence did prove to be a robust percentage, just not in Biden’s favor.

This leads to the unpacking of whiteness, latinidad, and mestizaje.

t seemed as though the U.S. might have had to wait into another week to know who would win its 2020 Presidential Election, which began on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

On Nov. 5, Democratic candidate for president, Joe Biden, flipped the final two of six outstanding states in his favor. With leads in Nevada and Arizona and an electoral vote count of 253, both Pennsylvania and Georgia flipped for Biden in the morning hours. As the day progressed, his leads got bigger.

By the morning of Nov. 6, his lead in Georgia was approaching 5,000 votes — not enough to declare a winner — and 30,000 in Pennsylvania.

While wins in Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia still look likely, it was Pennsylvania that delivered the White House to Biden with its 20 electoral votes, putting him at 273 and over the top.

With the win, Biden will become the 46th president of the United States of America and Donald Trump will become a lame duck in the final two months of his presidency.

Trump has tried ever since results started going against him on Wednesday to legally challenge the counting of mail-in ballots, alleging fraud. All of the claims to this point have been unproven and most of the legal challeng-

As the results came in, people took to the streets in Philadelphia, New York, and other major metropolitan areas across the U.S. to celebrate the victory, and the end of what's been a tumultuous four years for the country.

As Trump and his campaign will forge ahead with their court battles in an attempt to avoid the reality of the situation, Biden and Harris will begin to put together their cabinet for 2021 and the future.

ast Saturday, the entire country joined in cheering after Democrat Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, crossing 270 Electoral College votes with a victory in Pennsylvania.

Although Trump refused to budge, history is already written.

Along with Biden, California Senator Kamala Harris becomes the vice president-elect of the United States, the first black woman, and woman to hold the position, an epic achievement for a country facing one of the most significant social crises in its history.

Harris, the daughter of an Indian mother and Jamaican father, thus reaches the country's highest point of leadership for any woman before her.

As the New York Times recalls, in the course of her campaign, Harris emphasized those who paved the way for her to get where she is today.

When she took the stage in Texas shortly before the election, Harris spoke of her role and the work that remains to be done.

“Yes, sister, sometimes we may be the only one that looks like us walking in that room,” she told a largely Black audience in Fort Worth.

“But the thing we all know is we never walk in those rooms alone — we are all in that room together.”

At 56, the senator also embodies a country's future determined to change its ideological trajectory, with a young voter base that made its presence felt on Election Day. More than becoming the country's next vice president, Harris is the next to bat for new leadership, especially since Joe Biden is perceived as a transitional president for the country.

Shortly after the race was called, Harris tweeted a statement and video. “This election is about so much more than Joe Biden or me,” she said. “It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started.”

istory will remember the 2020 Election as the moment when the direction of the United States changed forever.

A tumultuous week full of misinformation, tension, anxiety, and unexpected results, showed that U.S. citizens have become aware of the strength behind their demographic diversity.

With an anticipated turnout of more than 90 million votes, the country had already broken records by Election Day, and it only became more evident as the hours passed on Nov. 3. Endless lines of people waited to exercise their democratic right and the amazing organization of activists and community members were just some of the most powerful events of the entire day.

Finally, with the announcement of the Biden-Harris campaign's victory on Saturday, the bells rang out from New York to Paris, in a celebration directly proportional to the sigh of relief that lifted an overwhelming weight from the world's shoulders.

However, the Latino vote was on everyone's lips, especially after the results were announced in favor of Donald Trump in Florida, and the ideological shift in Arizona, both of which were driven by the massive participation of Hispanic voters.

The dichotomy surprised those who, at this point, still believed in the myth of the monolith —

assuming that the Latino community in the U.S. functions as a solid block — and demonstrated the fractures that still exist in political strategies when it comes to approaching the complex dynamics of what is today, the largest ethnic demographic in the country.

The organization Voto Latino, co-founded by Eva Longoria Bastón, had registered around 600,000 voters for the 2020 election cycle, 73% of whom were between 18 and 39.

Earlier this week, the group released its latest statistics on Latino voters, with a particular emphasis on the surprising participation of young people, finding that about 8.2 million Latinos had voted, compared to 3.7 million Latinos who voted in 2016.

“In early voting, Latinx participation is at its highest level, with 6,810,948 votes cast, compared to 3,710,270 cast at this time in 2016. In Pennsylvania, early voting for Latinx is up 840% compared to 2016,” the organization reported.

That same participation was reflected in the leaders chosen to represent the community at the tables where decisions are made.

THE AOC EFFECT

Bronx Latino Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortéz was one of the Latinas to win re-election last week. With a message on Twitter, the 31-year-old Democrat and the new cover model for the December issue of Vanity Fair, thanked her community for her re-election as a congresswoman from New York's 14th District.

“Thank you to the Bronx and Queens for re-electing me to the House despite the millions spent against us, and for trusting me to represent them once again,” she wrote

Ocasio-Cortez has been more cautious about the close presidential election, although no less triumphant about what she has achieved with her party. In a recent Zinterview with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, AOC said that it doesn't matter which candidate wins because the progressive platform has achieved its own triumph: the generational moment.

“The fact is that the momentum is on our side and we're winning, and we've won the generational argument, and the millennials are radicalized,” added the legislator who, a few weeks ago, took the plunge to play Among Us, the most popular online game of 2020, to call the millennials and Gen Zers to the polls.

The strategy, it seems, had an impact on young voters. According to Tufts University's Center for Information and Research on Learning and Civic Engagement (CIRCLE), their participation this year was record-breaking: just one day before the election, more than 10 million people between the ages of 18 and 29 had voted early.

A CNN poll also showed that 51% of Americans in that demographic age group showed “extreme” enthusiasm for participating this year, compared to 30% in the 2016 election.

However, Ocasio-Cortéz also seems to have influenced the new generation of Latino elected officials who, inspired by his political savvy, threw their hats in the ring and emerged victoriously.

These are the Latino champions of the 2020 Election and the new generation representing the most crucial voting group in the country.

When Manny Guzman first ran to represent Reading, PA’s District 127 in Harrisburg, he lost by a mere 150 votes to a longtime incumbent in the Democratic primaries. Two years later, when that same incumbent retired, Guzman’s opportunity came calling and he took full advantage.

After triumphing early, Guzman will go to Pennsylvania’s state house as the first Latino to ever rep Reading. For this city, which is 66% Latino and rising, Guzman’s victory is a signal of the changing political power both in the city of Reading, state of Pennsylvania and country as a whole.

In a decisive victory against Republican Mark Ronchetti, Representative Ben Ray Luján has secured his win for the other New Mexico Senate seat alongside Democrat Martin Heinrich.

In the Senate race, Rep. Luján (NM-3) is joining the upper levels of Congress, but also affecting subsequent movements within the Hispanic Caucus. Luján is the current Assistant Speaker of the House since 2019, therefore the highest-ranking Latino in Congress. With his victory over Ronchetti, the impacts are profound.

She will become the first woman to hold the seat of the 3rd District since its inception in 1983, where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2-1 in the district, which overlaps parts of the Navajo Nation and other Native American communities.

Owner of a plumbing business and with experience in the legal field, Elizabeth "Liz" Campos was the Chief of Staff for former San Antonio Senator Carlos Uresti. She entered the Democratic nomination for District 119 by defeating Jennifer Ramos in the July runoff by 923 votes, or 13%.

Facing Republican candidate George B. Garza, Campos won with 62.6% of the vote.

RICKY HURTADO NC State Representative

Democrat Ricky Hurtado prevailed against Republican representative Stephen Ross in the 63rd District of North Carolina for the state’s House of Representatives, by a margin of 50.5% to 49.5%. The total vote was 20,264 for Hurtado to 19,869 for Ross.

Hurtado is now the first Latino elected to the North Carolina House.

While North Carolina is only 4.4% Latinx, his promotion to the House is a victory for Latinx representation, regardless of party lines. With those demographic levels, his success is great for Mexican-Americans underrepresented in the country's political landscapes.

El demócrata Ricky Hurtado prevaleció contra el representante republicano Stephen Ross en la carrera por el Distrito 63 de la Cámara de Representantes del Condado de Alamance, entre el 50,5% y el 49,5%. El total de votos fue de 20.264 para Hurtado a 19.869 para Ross.

Republican Maria Elvira Salazar defeated current Democratic Representative Donna Shalala in Florida's 27th Congressional District in a defeat that neither party anticipated on Election Day. Salazar, a former television journalist, won her race against one of Miami's best-known politicians by linking Shalala to leftist Democrats such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. He also hammered Shalala repeatedly for failing to disclose stock transactions while in office and characterized her as a contactless millionaire who could not connect with the working-class voters of the district.

The Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Florida, Carlos Gimenez, won 52% of the vote against incumbent Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and became the new Representative of the 26th Congressional District of Florida, which includes Monroe County and part of Miami-Dade.

“Today was a rejection of extremism, today was a rejection of partisanship and today was a rejection of socialism,” said Gimenez.

“This country needs to start working together because it has threats both at home and abroad.”

Republican Tony Gonzales, a former Navy cryptologist and professor at the University of Maryland sang victory in a close race to fill the vacancy left by Rep. Will Hurd in Texas' 23rd Congressional District, dashing the Democrats' hopes of winning the seat.

The San Antonio native had been endorsed by President Donald Trump and was part of the Republican National Campaign Committee's "Young Guns" program, which aims to recruit and support candidates in battleground districts.

The “zozobra” is a Mexican word to define a very specific type of anxiety and that fits very well with the times we live in.

oday’s political polarization opens a plurality of futures that unfold as terrible predictions for those who suffer anxiety or anxiety of anticipation. This is a way of referring to the manners we internalize opposing ends, accentuated by the mental devastation the pandemic entails.

Anxiety is like a horrible worm, fed by all possible fears and conditions, and extends like a relentless enemy from the stomach to the brain and into our flow of thoughts. This is how thousands of adults feel today, with a tight chest and a voice whispering the worst possibilities for the nation’s future.

The United States has proven once again that it is a deeply divided country. The polarization experienced in the last few weeks, added to the stress of the past four years under a narcissistic tycoon at the helm, has physically materialized on the streets of America and especially in the minds of all those trapped by the ghosts of possible outcomes.

In Mexico, they call this feeling “Zozobra,” a specific type of anxiety that prevents discerning the peculiarities of the present moment, also

known in Spanish as ambivalence, a bi-directional relationship with reality where all the possibilities of something having opposite values or being interpreted with divergences are internalized. This typology of anguish is a non-pathological reality experienced by many adults, with their minds accelerated by the crazy rhythm of the news and all kinds of information sources.

In much more precise psychiatric terms, this internal management of fear is known as anticipatory anxiety.

It's the same anxiety that whispers to us that we will fail an exam before it is over or that a date will go irretrievably wrong before it begins. It is not an illness or a symptom, but an exaggerated emotion that takes over in the worst possible scenarios.

The causes vary a lot and can depend on a thousand reasons. Clinically, it is often understood as the result of childhood anxiety, acquired inferiority complexes, a victim mentality, or evasive behaviors. All of this is further complicated by the devastating panorama of mental health that the pandemic has wrought, which many doctors have already warned about,

La polarización experimentada en las últimas semanas, sumada a la tensión añadida de estos cuatro años de intensa legislatura con un magnate narcisista a los mandos, se ha materializado físicamente en las calles de América y, especialmente, en las mentes de todos aquellos atrapados por los fantasmas de los posibles resultados.

En México llaman zozobra a un tipo concreto de ansiedad que impide discernir las peculiaridades del instante presente,

también conocida en castellano como ambivalencia, una relación bidireccional con la realidad en la que se interiorizan todas las posibilidades de que algo tenga valores contrapuestos o pueda interpretarse con divergencias.

Esta tipología de la angustia es una realidad no patológica que experimentan durante las jornadas de hoy muchos adultos, con la mente acelerada por el excitado ritmo de los noticieros y todo tipo de fuentes de información.

En términos psiquiátricos mucho más precisos esta gestión interior de los miedos se conoce como ansiedad anticipatoria, la misma ansiedad que nos susurra que suspenderemos un examen antes de terminar o que la cita saldrá irremediablemente mal antes de empezar. No es una enfermedad ni un síntoma sino una emoción exagerada en la que nos dejamos poseer por los peores escenarios posibles.

Las causas varían mucho y puede depender de un millar de motivos pero, clínicamente, muchas veces se entiende como el resultado de una ansiedad infantil, la inferioridad adquirida, los complejos, una mentalidad victimista o como el resultado de conductas evasivas. Between the misleading reports or fake news about the count in Pennsylvania that has gone viral, the announcements of complaints by Trump regarding the close results, or the surprising Republican impact among Latinos in Miami that has facilitated the victory in Florida, it is practically impossible to initiate healthy mental processes that allow us to discern the future and anticipate it. Instead, we surrender to the fears and terrible bodily sensations that cause anxiety.

German materialist philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977), known for essential works such as The Hope Principle or The Spirit of Utopia, sought to speak about how the future resides in the present. Not through ideological projects or state plans, but in the concrete material way where the seeds of the future live in the present. This is why he spoke of the "lighthouse of the present moment," a metaphor for how, like a lighthouse, we can sometimes look into the distance and interpret the future without looking at our feet and understanding the conditions of the present.

This same“lighthouse of the present moment” is displayed in all those who are suffering from anxiety right now and who, frightened by these four last years, are unable to determine with certainty a future no matter who wins the elections.

No a través de proyectos ideológicos ni planes estatales, sino en el modo material concreto en el que las semilla del futuro vive en el presente. Por ello solía hablar del “faro del instante presente”, una metáfora para referirse al modo en que, como un faro, somos a veces capaces de mirar a lo lejos e interpretar el futuro sin, por el otro lado, ser capaces de mirar a nuestros pies y comprender las condiciones del presente.

Es ese mismo “faro del instante presente” el que se despliega en todos aquellos sufriendo ahora mismo de zozobra, que atemorizados por estos cuatro años hacen cábalas imposibles de determinar con seguridad sobre un futuro en el que, gane quien gane en las elecciones de hoy, suelen perder los de siempre.

he spirits live in the middle of a highway between the Here and the Beyond, anchored to the land that saw them die. They hoot like the wind at the crimes they took part in. They are the memory and consciousness of a place, and although no one can remedy what happened to them, they become spokespersons of the future.

Raised between magical realism and horror novels, with one foot on the island of her ancestors and the other in the United States, Vermont author Ann Davila Cardinal knows better than anyone what it is to live between two worlds.

And that which unites them, which cements them, is supernatural terror.

In Category Five (June 2020, MacMillan), this year's International Latino Book Award winner, the youthful horror author places Lupe, a young Puerto Rican woman raised in Vermont and with a difficult childhood, in Puerto Rico to help her uncle, a police chief, and solve some chilling murders again.

Only this time, Lupe arrives on the island after Hurricane Maria, the category five storm that hit it in 2017 and with whose aftermath its citizens are still going through.

But Davila, in a brilliant way, places us in Vieques, where specters wander, and corpses with their hearts torn out have begun to appear. This is part of a real estate scheme in which a U.S. developer has taken advantage of the fact that the land is cheap to build tourist complexes, and all the victims seem to be related to this ruse of exploitation.

As in her first novel, Five Midnights, the author, who defines herself as a “Gringa-Rican,”uses terror to make a profound social criticism. She describes with total fidelity the life and feelings of her people – she describes the food, for example, as the approach to death and funerals, the speech and joy, the colonial trauma and the role of the United States; the rage and resentment against a country of which many Puerto Ricans feel helpless.

And, of course, the contradictions involved in searching for an identity, when both tell you that you are neither Latino nor American enough. Between the Here and the Beyond, like a ghost.

Criada entre el realismo mágico y las novelas de terror, con un pie en la isla de sus ancestros y el otro en Estados Unidos, la autora de Vermont Ann Dávila Cardinal sabe mejor que nadie lo que es vivir entre dos mundos. Y aquello que los une, que los cimenta, es el terror sobrenatural.

En Category Five (junio 2020, MacMillan), que fue ganadora este año de un International Latino Book Award, la autora de terror juvenil vuelve a situar a Lupe, una joven puertorriqueña criada en Vermont y con una niñez difícil, en Puerto Rico para ayudar nuevamente a su tío, jefe de policía, a resolver unos escalofriantes asesinatos.

Sólo que esta vez Lupe llega a la isla tras el huracán María, el ciclón de categoría cinco que la azotó en 2017 y con cuyas secuelas aún siguen viviendo sus ciudadanos.

Pero Dávila, de forma muy inteligente, nos ubica en Vieques, donde deambulan los espectros y han comenzado a aparecer cadáveres con el corazón arrancado. En el marco, eso sí, de una trama inmobiliaria en la que una promotora estadounidense ha aprovechado que los terrenos son baratos para construir complejos turísticos, y todas las víctimas parecen estar relacionadas con esta artimaña de explotación.

Como ocurría en su primera novela, Five Midnights, la autora, quien se define como una “Gringa-Rican”, emplea el terror para hacer una profunda crítica social, además de describirnos con total fidelidad la vida y el sentir de sus gentes -la manera, por ejemplo, en que describe la comida, el acercamiento a la muerte y los funerales, el habla y la alegría, el trauma colonial y el papel de Estados Unidos; la rabia y el resentimiento contra un país del que muchos puertorriqueños se sienten desamparados.

Y por supuesto, las contradicciones que entraña la búsqueda de una identidad, cuando unos y otros te dicen que ni eres suficientemente latina ni suficientemente norteamericana. Entre el Más Acá y el Más Allá, como un fantasma.

utside the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia - where Philadelphia and Pennsylvania’s electoral destiny hung in the balance —on November 5, 2020, the energy could be felt and heard in every corner of the world.

As poll workers inside counted every vote, and amid an overwhelming wave of mail ballots, the results came out in droves. Philadelphia, however, was ready to celebrate.

Throughout the day on Arch Street, spirits were rising on one side and falling on the other. The side that demanded that every vote be counted had a DJ running around all day, with Philadelphia council members and other local officials taking the microphone at different points throughout the day to bring the message home.

Forty-eight hours later, the results were final, and the party in the streets spread to the whole world, celebrating together a new beginning.

t PECO, diversity, and inclusion is embraced as one of the organization’s core values.

With such a diverse customer and employee base in such a diverse region, PECO has emphasized the importance of being inclusive, both internally and externally.

The Latin American community makes up one of the largest groups in the Greater Philadelphia region and is one of the communities PECO has worked to connect and engage in various ways.

A strong presence of employees at PECO is of Latino culture and heritage.

As a result, those employees have been very proactive in ensuring there’s a space to celebrate their heritage and that their voices are being heard.

This is done in a variety of ways.

One way that PECO employees have made an impact is by serving as board members for various nonprofit organizations across the city.

Daniel Estrada, the senior data analyst at PECO, is one of the many Latino employees at the company.

For example, he is currently on the

ENGLISH Young Professional Network (YPN) board funded by the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The Young Professional Network aims to create a pipeline of Latino executive professionals between 25 and 35.

Implementing employee resource groups (ERGs) has been another way that PECO has enhanced its diversity and inclusion efforts.

More than 20 years ago, PECO created the ERG, the Organization of Latinos at Exelon (OLE, for short).

In addition to his primary role at PECO, Estrada also serves as the president of OLE. “It started as just a group of employees that are Latino that wanted to have interactions and make sure that Latin American culture was being represented,” he said of the ERG. OLE has grown over the years, in large part, due to the creation of committees among the employees.

The committees have been responsible for addressing the needs of both the employees and the community.

“The very first thing is that we knew

In knowing that, Estrada made sure to listen to members and learn directly from them.

Through a survey and oneon-one engagement, it was found that the three basic ways to increase engagement were with social events, career development, and volunteer work.

These three elements allow PECO to interact with a larger group of Latinos in the region and continue being a voice within the company.

To this extent, PECO often hosts Latino organizations celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting the significant contributions of prominent Latinos, and providing valuable opportunities for the Latino community in the region.

“It’s really neat to see how a company really wants to be involved … and particularly with the Latino community,” said Estrada.

For Estrada, serving as president of OLE is most fulfilling for two main reasons.

One is his understanding of the importance of having a diversity of thoughts from different backgrounds and experiences.

“Bringing diverse thinking and diverse candidates into our company really enhance productivity and enhances the ability to find new and exciting ways of doing things,” he said.

The second is that he has two young Hispanic daughters, and he wants them to know their opportunities and capabilities are without limit.

“I always want to make sure that Latinos are represented, and I'm always pushing and really making sure that my Latinas in the group are really showing what they can do.”
