Kenya Aims to Attract 10 million Tourists in the Next Five Years

Despite a challenging environment due to the global pandemic, the country received a total of 1.484 million tourists in 2022. The Chairperson of the Kenya Tourism Board, Francis Gichaba, says that the government will gradually align its marketing initiatives to achieve this goal by 2027. To reach the target, Kenya will need to diversify its tourism offerings and focus on niche markets, such as eco-tourism and cultural tourism.

Tourism is a vital sector for Kenya's economy, contributing 10% to the country's GDP and employing over 1.5 million people directly and indirectly. The industry has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with travel restrictions and lockdowns leading to a sharp decline in tourist arrivals in 2020. However, the industry has been showing signs of recovery in recent months, with the government implementing various measures to attract visitors, including reducing visa fees and promoting domestic tourism.

Ugandan Government to Renovate 4 Airfields to Help Boost Tourism

The government is planning to renovate four airstrips in different parts of the country as part of its strategy to develop the tourism industry. This directive was given by President Museveni to the Minister of Works and Transport and his tourism counterpart during a cabinet meeting last week.

The Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, Tom Butiime, revealed this while officiating the seventh edition of the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo-POATE in Munyonyo, Kampala. The President ordered that the airfields of Kasese, Kidepo Pakuba, and Kisoro be tarmacked and coded to enable tourists with private jets to easily access the tourism sites around these fields.

Leisure travel, and particularly safari, is driving the recovery of travel and tourism in Africa. This is according to the Africa Travel Week Trends report released this week at World Travel Market Africa, being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Data released by research firm ForwardKeys reveals that all the top destinations on the continent are showing a marked improvement in Q1 2023, from 2022, with the improvement continuing into 2023.

People & Wildlife in Harmony

Born Free’s Saving Meru’s Giants Manager Newton Simiyu reports on the wildlife charity’s practical vision to create a future where humans and wildlife can co-exist in harmony.

The conservation of wildlife is an essential part of preserving the natural world for future generations. International wildlife charity Born Free is committed to promoting tolerance, coexistence, and compassionate conservation among communities around Meru National Park in Kenya. However, as human populations continue to grow, the pressure on wildlife and their habitats increases. In response to this, we have developed a three-pronged approach that links monitoring elephant and giraffe populations, reducing threats through de-snaring patrols, and promoting compassionate conservation through innovative, practical solutions such as beehive fencing.

Monitoring Meru’s giraffes and elephants is critical for understanding their population dynamics, as well as identifying potential threats to their survival. We use a System for Elephant Ear-pattern Knowledge (SEEK) to identify each elephant and give individual registration codes based on sex, age, and unique features and markings. We currently have 247 identified elephants in our database. In the Meru National Park, this amounts to 75% of the elephant population.

To track trends in giraffe numbers, we conduct photographic mark-recapture surveys. When a giraffe or herd of giraffes is observed, we take a picture of the right side of every individual, to identify each by their unique coat pattern. These photos are then stored in a database for long-term population monitoring. These are fed into

ADVERTORIAL

our Outputs for the following years. Records of any new individuals, births, and deaths are also kept. Currently, we have identified and developed a comprehensive database of 229 or 54% of the giraffe population in Meru National Park. By regularly monitoring these populations, we can track population trends and respond accordingly.

The second step entails reducing threats to wildlife by conducting patrols for de-snaring. Once the populations of elephants and giraffes have been monitored, it is important to assess potential threats and conflicts that may affect their survival. Illegal wire snares are a significant threat to wildlife, particularly to large animals like giraffes. These wire snares, which are frequently used by poachers to capture ‘bushmeat’, are indiscriminate, capable of causing serious wounds, and frequently result in death. We have a dedicated Twiga Team that conducts regular de-snaring patrols on foot in snare hot spot zones to eliminate wire snares from the habitat to counter this threat. The team has successfully patrolled 560km on foot, removing 677 snares and enhancing the safety of the animals' habitat.

The third step is promoting compassionate conservation and co-existence via nature-based solutions. One innovative approach to Saving Meru’s Giants project is the use of beehive fencing to help prevent elephants from raiding crops on community farms surrounding the park, which can lead to conflicts. Born Free places 12 beehives along the perimeter of each crop farms to create a natural barrier that deters elephants from entering. Elephants

are known to be afraid of bees and will typically avoid them at all costs. By using beehives as a natural deterrent, farmers can protect their crops without resorting to lethal measures.

In addition to mitigating negative elephant–human interactions, beehive fences contribute to sustainable development by providing supplementary revenue streams. This can lessen the cost of crop damage, thereby raising tolerance and the possibility of long-term and sustainable human-elephant co-existence. Beyond beehive fencing, we have created a conflict toolkit to guide communities on how to use easy-to-implement, low-cost human-elephant conflict resolution techniques.

By linking these three key areas, Born Free creates a comprehensive approach that addresses the key challenges facing wildlife conservation. By monitoring populations, reducing threats, and promoting compassionate conservation, we can protect wildlife and their habitats for future generations. This approach is particularly important in areas with high human-wildlife conflict, where the survival of wildlife populations is under threat. By working with local communities and promoting co-existence, we can find innovative solutions that benefit both wildlife and local people. A collaborative approach can create a future where humans and wildlife can co-exist in harmony, and where the natural world is preserved for generations to come.

Bridging the Gap: Empowering Samburu Women and Girls

Samburu, Kenya is known for the beautiful desert landscape, big herds of elephants, the reticulated giraffe, and the Grevy’s zebras that are indigenous to the area. It is also home to the beautifully adorned women of Samburu, who stand out in the distance wearing their bright red beads and colorful clothing. Sadly, Samburu is also known to be a county on the forefront of climate change.

With less and less rainfall each year, trying to maintain their cultural traditions is proving extremely challenging for the Samburu people. With chronic drought, the livestock at the core of their livelihood is severely compromised, herd mortality is at an all-time high, and conflict is growing. The Samburu Project is addressing these serious issues by focusing on water first. Installing a well to provide easy access to clean water impacts a community in measured ways. Time saved by no longer walking miles in search of water, provides women and girls time for new pursuits.

With free primary school, girls are being enrolled in growing numbers. With these steps forward come new challenges - how do school age girls manage their menstruation? That is one intervention that The Samburu Project is solving for girls in Samburu East.

For women and girls around the world, access to safe water, proper hygiene, and improved sanitation plays a critical role in reproductive health and, as a result, in gender equality. In the remote region of Samburu, menstrual hygiene supplies are almost non-existent. Instead, girls are forced to put their studies on hold each month and try to manage their menstruation with little to no supplies or knowledge. This burden can cause a Samburu girl to miss up to 60 days of school a year - the equivalent of 2 months.

But with access to clean water, this all changes. Reusable menstrual hygiene supplies become a realistic option, and girls can stay in the classroom, where they belong.

16 | NDEGE NEWS | JUNE - AUGUST 2023 NEWS UPDATES

This is why,for the last four years, The Samburu Project has put menstrual health at the forefront of their women’s programming. Together with PadMad founder, Madhvi Dalal, The Samburu Project has been able to educate girls on their menstrual health, provide them with products that are designed to last five years, and inspire Samburu girls to live their best lives and dream big!

The PadMad products created by founder Madhvi Dalal, are known worldwide. Unlike other menstrual products they are not made out of plastic, making them better for both the environment and the girls who use them. Madhvi not only supplies TSP with these products, but also provides education on reproductive health and is working to erase the stigma and taboo of talking about your period. She leads the girls through simple yoga stretches to help with cramping and shares instructions on how to use the pads.

To further inspire the girls, the workshops include inspirational speakers. Previous speakers have been Samburu Chief Joy, Kenyan musician, King Kaka, and world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge who led the whole community on a run throughout Samburu National Reserve.

With the success of the school programs, The Samburu Project is now bringing their menstrual education program to rural villages where TSP has drilled wells. The program offers the same education and products to adult women who otherwise use leaves, rags and even animal skin to manage their menstruation. Clean water plus safe menstruation means healthier Samburu communities.

Thanks to our corporate partners, The Samburu Project’s Menstrual Hygiene program is growing every year. Thank you to AirKenya, whose female pilots provide air transportation to The Samburu Project, Family Bank, Kapa Oil, and the generosity of donors across the globe.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS:

Ellyjoy Nachuch, a class 7 student at Girgir primary school, said she is thankful that she was able to attend MHD workshop and is still using the products! “[I am] trying to teach my friends what I learned that day. I hope they will be able to attend such a workshop in the future so they can experience what I learned,” she shared.

In addition to the products, Ellyjoy said she enjoyed meeting new friends that day and learning yoga. “I never knew what yoga was, and I still practice what I learned at the workshop!”

“Thank you TSP and Padmad Kenya for [your] support and provision of sanitary products. [You have] changed my life,” said Doreen Wamboi Lenasio. “The MHD workshop [taught me] how to keep personal hygiene a priority. [I hope there] will be many workshops in the near future to help create awareness for other girls about personal and menstrual hygiene.”

Ballooning in Africa

Exploring the vast African landscapes from a different perspective has always captivated the imaginations of adventurers and visionaries alike. It was the renowned author Jules Verne who first sparked the idea of ballooning in Africa with his novel "Five Weeks in a Balloon," published in 1862. Verne's vivid descriptions of a daring flight across the African continent from Zanzibar ignited the potential for experiencing breath-taking sights and encountering exotic wildlife from a hot air balloon.

Almost a century later, Anthony Smith, an intrepid English writer and gas balloonist, decided to transform Verne's captivating words into reality. Accompanied by his crew, Smith embarked on an extraordinary journey in his balloon from Zanzibar to Tanganyika, and then onwards over the magnificent Serengeti and the Rift Valley. Joining him on this remarkable expedition was wildlife photographer Alan Root, who, like Verne, recognized the incredible potential of observing wildlife from an aerial vantage point.

Around the same time, the United States Navy was developing a modern hot air balloon primarily as a ship-to-shore lifting device. Although the navy eventually abandoned the project, a new type of balloon emerged, constructed with rip-stop spinnaker nylon and equipped with a burner powered by domestic cooking gas. This innovative balloon design proved to be cost-effective, easy to maintain, and provided excellent control over altitude, adjustable to within a few inches.

Alan Root, ever eager to explore new horizons, arranged for a test flight in one of these modern balloons. As he ascended six feet off the ground, he realized that this flying apparatus was precisely what he had been seeking.

Wasting no time, he swiftly arranged for a balloon and a skilled pilot to be sent to Kenya, where he delved into the intricacies of mastering the art of flying. Overcoming the challenges of adapting European flying techniques to suit African conditions, Root soon conquered the hazards and commenced his earnest endeavour of capturing breath-taking footage from the skies.

The culmination of Alan Root's aerial exploits resulted in his renowned film, "Safari by Balloon," which quickly became a beloved masterpiece. This captivating documentary has been enjoyed by over 98 million viewers across 26 different countries, and he became the first person to ever fly over the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in a hot air balloon.

A mere year later, on January 3rd, 1976, Alan Root accomplished yet another milestone by piloting the inaugural flight of a pioneering Kenyan company, Balloon Safaris Limited. Established in the heart of the Masai Mara Game Reserve at Keekorok Lodge, this enterprise aimed to provide visitors with an awe-inspiring and unique perspective of the African savannah, promising unforgettable adventures and encounters with the continent's remarkable wildlife.

From the pages of Jules Verne's visionary novel to the daring exploits of Anthony Smith and Alan Root, ballooning in Africa has evolved from a fantastical concept to a thrilling reality. Today, the legacy of these pioneers lives on, as adventurers from around the world embrace the opportunity to soar above the enchanting landscapes of Africa, witnessing its untamed beauty and diverse wildlife from the tranquility of a graceful hot air balloon.

Authentic Safari Experiences at Marasa Africa

Marasa Africa’s portfolio of properties are set in the greatest national parks in Uganda and Kenya and offer unrivalled destinations. Tracking gorillas in Uganda and witnessing the Great Migration in the Masai Mara are amongst the absolute highlights of African travel.

With a focus on providing authentic safari experiences and promoting sustainable tourism, the brand has become synonymous with the East African warmth and professionalism, luxurious accommodation, fine dining and exceptional wildlife encounters. The lodges cater for all types of guests, from adventure and leisure travel, family groups, weddings and conferences.

The Madhvani Group is a conglomerate based in Uganda with interests in sugar manufacturing, hospitality, tea, and other sectors. The group has a long history in Uganda, dating back to the early 1900s.

The Madhvani family, which founded the group, arrived in Uganda in the early 1900s and established themselves as traders. In the 1920s, they entered the sugar industry, building the first sugar mill in the country in 1924. Over the years, the group has expanded into other areas such as tea production, hospitality, and engineering.

Today, the Madhvani Group is one of the largest private sector employers in Uganda, with a significant presence in the country's economy.

Marasa Africa has established itself as a leading player in the East African tourism industry. The brand's properties are located in some of the region's most iconic national parks and reserves, including Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Aberdare National Park, and Masai Mara National Reserve.

In Kenya, Marasa Africa welcomes guests to three landmark lodges that provide visitors with a chance to explore some of the country's most iconic wildlife destinations.

The Aberdare Country Club, only a two-and-a-halfhour drive northeast from Nairobi, is nestled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was the homestead of an English couple that decided to settle in Kenya. Almost a half century later, their home, "The Steep", was renamed the Aberdare Country Club and opened for guests. Considered

a heritage property in Kenya, The Aberdare Country Club has retained the charm of a private home with the simple comforts; a grand garden and national park where the rare Rothschild giraffe are enjoyed on horseback, the country club’s spa is perfect to rejuvenate, and there are unapparelled views over the Kenyan Highlands.

20 | NDEGE NEWS | JUNE - AUGUST 2023 FEATURE
The Aberdare Country Club

The sanctuary abounds with zebra, rare Rothschild giraffe, impala, warthog, duikers and the more elusive leopard. It is a home to many species of East African birds.

All guest Cottages have spectacular views to the North, overlooking the Solio Game Sanctuary the home of the black and white rhinos. The Aberdare Mountains to the west and Mount Kenya to the East provide a stunning backdrop to the beautiful grounds.

The Ark is set in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, iconic and yes, quirky. The Ark overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, which attracts a host of awesome wildlife. Resembling and named after Noah’s Ark, The Ark comprises of three decks from which numerous balconies and lounges provide a superb location for wildlife to be seen. So that you don’t miss any animal sightings, the night guard will buzz your room when special animals come to the waterhole. The Ark has four viewing areas for observing the ever-present animal activity.

There is also a ground level bunker –the perfect hideout for the discerning photographer. This is a circular pillbox-like structure, and it is from this vantage point that pictures of animals on the salt lick only yards away may be taken through the view holes in complete safety.

Set in what is considered Kenya's prime wildlife area, Mara Leisure Camp is located along the Talek River, at the confluence of the Masai Mara's four wildlife viewing areas, on the northern boundary of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Mara Leisure Camp is located within one of the most spectacular locations in the entire Masai Mara Game Reserve.

One of the most exciting spectacles in the world is that of the 'Great Migration', where two million wildebeest, zebras and other herbivores pass through the Masai Mara/ Serengeti ecosystem in Kenya and Tanzania. This is a perilous migration for the animals, where they encounter many river crossings, and have to run the gauntlet of crocodiles in waiting.

Heli adventures are tailor made to suit guest’s interests. They might include touching down to discover ancient rock art; landing on top of Mount Ololokwe, the sacred Samburu mountain, for a coffee at sunrise; walking around the rim of a volcano; picnicking amongst ancient

cycads in the Mathews Range; photographing the pink plumage of thousands of flamingos; or stopping to catch a fish in one of Mount Kenya’s high altitude lakes. There is so much to explore right on Sasaab’s doorstep.

Ultimate zen

The outlook from Sasaab is spectacular and a real feeling of serenity fills the air. Those seeking total relaxation might find it hard to tear themselves away from their private verandas and plunge pools overlooking the river and panoramic views beyond. For those that do, a beautifully designed spa area awaits, with expert therapists offering a range of indulgent and pampering treatments. There’s also a gym and a main lodge horizon pool. Anyone eager for a jog can do so with a Samburu guide accompanying them, which certainly makes for a unique running experience!

The wellness offerings at Sasaab extend beyond the spa and gym,

with wholesome, fresh meals. Many of the ingredients use by the chefs are grown on site in an impressive organic veggie garden, which guests can take a tour of if they wish. Their daily, vibrant lunchtime salad selection perfectly suits the balmy climate.

After sunset, private roof top star beds offer an incredible way to gaze up at the thousands of stars shining in the inky sky, free from light pollution. Currently, four rooms enjoy roof top star beds, but plans to extend this to all rooms are already underway.

Culture and sustainability

As a certified Global Ecosphere Retreat, Sasaab is exemplary when it comes to safaris that make a positive impact on people and wildlife. Awarded by The Long Run and recognised as one of the highest sustainability standards in the world, GER status means that Sasaab has carved out a harmonious existence between itself as a tourist operator, the local community, wildlife conservation and safeguarding

the unique culture of the Samburu people.

Sasaab exists in partnership with the local Westgate community. Guest conservancy fees support development projects in the area, and most of the lodge team are employed from the community. Additionally, The Safari Collection’s Footprint foundation supports a range of

impactful health and education projects in the area. As such, people share in the benefits of tourism and are invested in protecting a core area for wildlife and managing the grazing of livestock.

This mutually beneficial partnership brings a great deal to the guest experience, as interactions with local Samburu people are not only made

possible but are entirely authentic. Village visits and ceremonial experiences offer a fascinating glimpse into a unique and vanishing culture. The most recent addition is an impressive learning hub which celebrates Samburu culture and the unique geology and history of the area surrounding Sasaab. Guests can visit at any time to gain a real insight into local culture, Sasaab’s context and this area of Kenya.

Family first

As a family run safari business, The Safari Collection always enjoys welcoming families to create special safari memories of a lifetime. Children of all ages can stay at Sasaab and the Samburu guides will enthusiastically take younger guests under their wing, perhaps taking them on a nature walk around camp, showing them the ‘toothbrush’ tree or how to make a traditional bow and arrow. The kitchen team are brilliant at catering to children’s meal requests.

Sasaab has one spacious family tent with an expansive private deck and plunge pool, offering a relaxed and secluded set up for groups. The family tent also comes with exclusive use of game drive vehicle. Infants (two years and under) stay free of charge and the lodge offers a ‘baby listening’ service. However, the number of steps and steep incline of the property is worth bearing in mind if travelling with toddlers. A stunning new family suite is currently being created from the former spa and gym area (which has had an amazing upgrade) and will be ready soon, taking the current nine rooms up to eleven in total.

Unveiling the Magic of Lewa: Wildlife, Conservation, and Enchanting Views

“There was a tribe in Zimbabwe known as the Matabele tribe. They were fierce fighters, a splinter group from the Zulus. They would raid on the other tribes during the 1800 and take their property”, began Peter Lenina, our tour guide as we watched a colony of ants walking.

For a moment, I didn’t understand why we were talking about the Matabeles until it hit me that we were actually talking about the ants. The termite eating ants were given the name Matabele due to their column like raiding formation when attacking the termite feeding site.

“When you see them, know that the rains are coming,” he continues. And in deed the rains were coming going by the look of the dark grey clouds above us sending us signals that it was time to move fast or be drenched.

It was an interesting diversion, learning about the ants, one of the tiniest yet with so much lessons to learn from. Such conversations can only come from a guide who is thorough in his knowledge and research on the ecosystem as well as be intelligent enough to to turn things that seem irrelevant to be relevant.

Considering that we were at Lewa, a UNESCO world heritage site, where you can both see the big five as well as the northern five like the reticulated giraffe, the Somali ostrich, the beisa oryx, gerenuk and has the highest population of Grevy’s zebras in the region, such tiny creatures are more often than not, the neglected ones when it comes to game drive sightings. However, even with such conversations and learning, the thrill and anticipation of what we might find along the way still came out as we weaved our way through the

conservancy, marveling at the great work it’s taken to maintain it.

For the bird lovers, Lewa is a great destination for that as over 300 species of birds have been recorded and can be sighted during the game drives. It is also much loved by celebrities and it’s the place where Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton the Princess of Wales making it one of the most prestigious conservancies in the country. My favorite was the late Anthony Bourdain, the American celebrity chef, author and travel documentarian whose stories on international cuisine, culture and human condition captured the hearts of many and inspired to look beyond travel and connect with locals. The last episode in Parts Unknown before he kicked the bucket was his experience in Kenya and Lewa’s conservation efforts being part of it.

But beneath the glamour is their serious mission of wildlife conservation, which has made the place a safe haven for rhinos. This all began in the 1980s when the Craig family, who owned the ranch, began a serious project of converting the land into conservation by introducing rhinos. This work has made it be recognized for its protection of the black rhino and it’s the leading pioneer in East Africa. Their numbers have risen from 15 to 255 rhinos and I watched them roam freely during my game drive. It’s a guarantee to see both of the species. There are also black rhinos at Olpejeta, with the last two endangered northern white rhinos in the world being the major attraction.

As we meandered through the conservancy towards our destination the wildlife experience only got better. We followed a single cheetah as he bound through the long grass, eventually resting on a fallen tree. A herd of elegant Grevy Zebra, found almost exclusively in Northern Kenya and sadly endangered, stood on the rise of a hill and slowly moved towards us in formation, each one following the other.

One can drive to the conservancy and it can take around six hours to get there from Nairobi. There is also a flight option with airlines like AirKenya plying the route. To resolve the issue of connectivity for guests who would like to connect to different

destinations, Airkenya has an option where one can fly directly to the Masaai Mara via Nanyuki and to The Serengeti in Tanzania via Wilson and Kilimanjaro airports.

“We saw a demand in the number of travelers heading to such destinations and that informed our decision to start flights in the region. There was also a demand when it comes to connecting the northern circuit (Nanyuki, Loisaba, Meru , Lewa and Samburu to Masaai Mara and we also bridged that gap,” says Jean Uku the marketing manager at AirKenya

The beauty too of being on a game drive in a conservancy is the fact that there is no crowding and there is ease too when it comes to spotting wildlife. Apart from the array of wildlife that one can view during the game drive, I also enjoyed the panoramic views of Mount Kenya and Ololokwe from the conservancy.

After a driving through the narrow, dusty roads lined with thick bushes, it’s always awesome to watch the sunset or have breakfast overlooking the views.

As a destination, Lewa has five properties available for guests who would like to soak in the views and also support conservation through your bookings to one of them. In 2015, the conservancy saw the need to incorporate tourism into the conservation model to and looked for investors who are knowledgeable on both tourism and conservation to partner with them in doing so. The investors must also employ the locals in the properties to create employment as a means of supporting them. I stayed in two of Elewana’s properties at the conservancy; Kifaru house which was formerly a private home still maintains that feel with personalized treatment and warm staff who ensure that your stay is comfortable. I would say it is the home of stunning views being that it is perched on top of a hill giving you views to die for of the conservancy whether you are taking a dip at the swimming pool or taking your lunch or reading a book outside your room. It makes you feel like you have just reached the heart of the conservancy, deeply immersed in it’s beauty, unwinding from the hustle and bustle of the city life. You

NDEGE NEWS | JUNE - AUGUST 2023 | 29

have five charming cottages with one of them being for honeymooners or couples celebrating something special.

The other camp that I tried out was the Lewa Safari Camp, another property under Elewana Collection, which also has the same feel as Kifaru.

“Most travelers both international and local visit the conservancy thanks to the conservation efforts that have been made. Lewa’s model focuses on wildlife conservation and being protective on the environment. The properties there focus on having the lowest impact on the environment,” says Thomas Omollo, one of the managers at Lewa safari Camp.

The fewer the camps, the higher the number of animals and also the more privy your game drive will be. Having five properties also means no crowding and there is enough space for every guest to have a great game viewing chance.

“Only our guests are able to view the sightings. Each of the properties has their own area of game viewing. The guides have excellent knowledge and they are all silver rated,” continues Thomas.

While national parks are open to the public, here there is more control in

that you must have a booking in one of the camps before you are allowed in.

“The tourist that come here resonate more with the conservation model because of the communities and also the work that goes on in conservation. Our guests are not only that but also donors who ensure know that the money they spend on the booking or as donations goes to a worthy cause,” continues Thomas.

Another of its attraction is the Lewa Marathon, the conservancy’s flagship event that is held every year to raise funds for numerous

community development and wildlife conservation efforts. Since its inception in 2000, the endurance race has become widely known for its difficult terrain and harsh climate, drawing competitors and spectators globally.

Notes

While the main activity at Lewa is the game drive, there are other activities that one can engage in like horseback rides, camel riding, and other external activities provided through the Lewa partners like the Ngare Ndare visit, Illengwesi Masaai visits done through their partners Borana.

Experience the Beauty of Zanzibar Serena Hotel

As a travel enthusiast, I have always been fascinated by the exotic beauty of Africa, and Zanzibar has been on my bucket list for years. Finally, I got the chance to visit this enchanting island and my stay at Zanzibar Serena Hotel was an astounding experience.

I booked my trip with Regional Air and was thoroughly impressed with their service. The flight was smooth and the cabin crew attentive and friendly. The airline operates daily flights to Zanzibar and the journey took about 2 hours from Nairobi, Kenya. We landed at Zanzibar International Airport, where I was warmly welcomed by a representative from the hotel.

A visit to the magical spice isle

For centuries past, cardamom, clove and cinnamon culled from the fabled spice gardens of the enchanted island of Zanzibar have been prized by sultans and princes alike. To enter the world of Zanzibar is to step through the looking glass into the world of a thousand and one nights and black eyes that smile from behind deep veils. There’s a House of Wonders and a street of food, a Palace Museum, an ancient slave market, an age-old fort, a ruined harem and the house where Dr Livingstone once lived. There are Red Colobus Monkeys and dolphins and a bright tapestry of Arab, African and

Swahili culture, folklore and cuisine that are as mesmeric as myth.

So where to begin?

The journey from the ultra-modern airport into Stone Town takes only around half an hour and you’re soon in the midst of a Stone Town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town is the only functioning historical city in East Africa and is much the same today as it was 200 years ago. A city within a city, Stone Town is the oldest section of Zanzibar Town, and is made up of winding lanes and unique stone houses, many of which feature magnificent carved doors and overhanging fretwork balconies.

Where to stay?

As you’d expect of a town that has attracted visitors for centuries past, the choice of accommodation ranges from the most simplistic guest house to the most luxurious 5-star hotel. For optimum exposure to all that Zanzibar has to offer, however, you can do no better than the Zanzibar Serena Hotel which occupies a unique position on one of Stone Town’s most beautiful squares and has its own strip of pristine beach overlooking miles and miles of translucent blue water. Inspirationally presented in traditional Swahili style, the hotel serves as a showcase for Swahili culture housing its own museum of furniture, photographs and traditional Swahili crafts while also featuring performances of taarab music, the chance to sample an entirely authentic Swahili banquet, or take evening cocktails on the pool terrace (which happens to enjoy one of the best examples of Zanzibar’s stunning sunset).

The wonders of Stone Town

Best to begin your stay with a tour of Stone Town which is, literally, on the hotel’s doorstep. Sights include:

The Hamami Baths, built in 1870, The Africa House Hotel, once the British Club, the house of notorious

slave-trader

Tippu-Tip, the slave

pit, the National Museum, the old Slave Market, the Church of Christ Cathedral (which stands over the central whipping block of the slave market), the Livingstone House, the Dhow Harbour, the Jamituru Gardens and night food market, the People’s

Palace and the Arab Fort. You can also opt to take in a tour of the Freddie Mercury Museum which is a five-minute walk from the hotel and not only tells the story of this iconic musician but also features a unique collection of antique photographs of Zanzibar.

Retail therapy Zanzibar style

You can’t help but shop in Stone Town. The ancient streets are lined with emporiums selling everything from spices to hand-made soap and from gloriously exotic clothes to Zanzibar chests. You can also stop along the way to enjoy an aromatic coffee made in the Arab style or browse the many art galleries and curiosity shops.

Doing the Spice Tour

A visit to the ‘Spice Isle’ would be incomplete without taking in the famous ‘Spice Tour, which is easily arranged by the hotel concierge. Zanzibar and Pemba supply 75% of the world’s cloves, which were not introduced as a cash crop until 1818. Now the smell of the island’s major export pervades the islands, especially during the harvest season between July and December. The islands also grow nutmeg, lemon grass, black pepper, cardamom and cinnamon, all of which can be seen

NDEGE NEWS | JUNE - AUGUST 2023 | 33

growing in the spice plantations alongside numerous exotic tropical fruits. The organized tour stops to see and smell and taste the tropical fruits and spices, plus offers information on what they may be used for. It usually ends with ginger tea in the afternoon. Visitors can also purchase spices and spice oils at very economic prices.

Meet the rare red colobus monkey

If you’d like to take a trip out of Stone Town, head for the Jozani Forest Reserve, the last sanctuary in the world for the rare red colobus monkey, which is endemic to Zanzibar. 35 kms from Stone Town, the 484-acre reserve is also home to other species including Syke's monkey's, bush pigs and nocturnal Zanzibar leopards. Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative.

Island hopping

For the perfect picnic getaway on a sunny tropical afternoon, the tiny deserted islands lying a few kilometres off the western tip of Zanzibar Town are ideal. One of the most popular destinations is Prison Island. This coral outcrop was formerly owned by an Arab who used it to detain misbehaving slaves. In 1893 a prison was built there and although it was never used, the ruins can still be seen. A relaxing walk around the island, past peacocks and mango groves, takes about half an hour. Goats, gazelles

How to get there

and birds inhabit the woods, but the most famous residents are its giant land tortoise probably brought from Aldabra in the Seychelles near the end of the last century.

Insider tip: the hotel organizes a superb sundowner dhow trip that includes music from your own private taarab orchestra, fresh coconut juice and Swahili snacks, a tour of the island and swimming off it’s pristine beach.

A seafood lunch on a sand bank

Perhaps the most enchanting excursion on offer at the Serena Zanzibar Hotel, however, is a trip out to the sandbank that lies just off Stone Town and will be clearly visible from your hotel room. Leaving the hotel mid-morning by means of a

Zanzibar Serena Hotel is easily accessible by flights through Regional Air Services, which offers daily scheduled flights to Zanzibar. It also flies to all the safari destinations in Northern Tanzania and offers charter services across Tanzania.

Additionally, Regional Air Services provide a daily scheduled connection from Northern Tanzania to Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

boat that comes to collect you from the hotel’s own beach, the journey to the gleaming white sandbank takes around twenty minutes. Once landed you are escorted to your own private area of shade beneath which stands a table and chairs. Whilst you take a swim in the aquamarine waters (or a stroll around the island), a selection of freshly-caught seafood is cooked on a barbeque and served (with superlative chips) by your personal steward. You can then elect to spend the rest of the day on the beach, or head back into Stone Town for your next adventure.

Mission Tour & Travel

Mission Tour and Travel is a Kenyan travel company with a rich history and a strong commitment to serving the community. Founded in 1992 by Elias and Perpetual Muigai, the company has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the leading travel organizations in Kenya. With a focus on mission and faith-based tours, Mission Tour and Travel offers travellers a unique and meaningful travel experience.

The company was started with one simple goal in mind: to serve God and the community. Elias worked as a driver, taking missionaries around the country, while Perpetual managed the office from their home. Despite

a busy schedule that included raising their children and working full-time, Perpetual dedicated herself to growing the company and making it a success.

As the business grew, the need for a formal office and additional staff became apparent. Elias and Perpetual were able to build a successful company while staying true to their values and mission. They have worked with many religious organizations such as Bethel university, Daystar University, Living Water, and Saruni Africa to provide clean water to communities in need and build churches throughout

Kenya. The impact of their work can be seen in over 100 churches that have been built in partnership with denominations such as PCEA and ACK among others.

In 2007, following the post-election violence in Kenya, Elias and Perpetual took it upon themselves to help rebuild houses for those affected in Nakuru, Molo, and other areas. They also sponsored children's homes to provide support for those in need. This selfless act of kindness is a testament to the deep commitment they have, to serving the community and making a positive impact in the world.

FEATURE

In addition to their mission and faith-based tours, Mission Tour and Travel also offers a wide range of other travel services, including adventure tours, wildlife safaris, and cultural tours. No matter what type of travel experience you are looking for, Mission Tour and Travel has something to offer. Their knowledgeable and experienced staff will work with you to design a customized tour that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations.

Mission Tour and Travel also has an office in the USA in partnership with Mike Anderson, who has a physical office in the USA. They also partner with CMA, universities such as Baylor University as well as corporate organizations. Through these partnerships, they have been able to create programs that allow people from universities in the US to come to Kenya and give back to the community through various projects, before going on a safari. These programs provide a unique and fulfilling way for people to make a positive impact in the world, while also having the opportunity to experience the beauty of Kenya's wildlife and landscapes.

One of the keys to Mission Tour and Travel's success is their close partnership with Airkenya which

provides connecting flights to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania through their subsidiaries, AeroLink and Regional Air. Mission Tour and Travel has been a trusted partner for many years. The company utilises both charter and scheduled flights and their relationship has been like family for many years.

Breakfast in the Mara Lunch in the Serengeti

Q&A with Phiona Asasira, Reservations Officer at AirKenya

Q. Can you tell us about your background and how you came to work for AirKenya's Reservations department?

I have previously worked in customer service and tourism journalism in Rwanda where I interacted with various players in the tourism industry including domestic airlines. In 2016, I was presented with an opportunity to pitch to the then Country Manager of AeroLink Uganda to have the airline feature in the Eye Magazine so they can tap into the Rwandan market. A year and a half later, I was told about the amazing opportunity of working with AeroLink which I took. Four years later an opening in the Reservations department in AirKenya led me to where I am today, as I was transferred to the Nairobi office at Wilson Airport.

Q. How does AirKenya's reservations department work to provide a positive customer experience?

AirKenya's reservations department strives to provide a positive customer experience by offering prompt and knowledgeable assistance, personalized support, efficient booking management and problem resolution, while maintaining a professional and friendly attitude. We continuously seek improvement through training and aim to create a seamless and enjoyable journey for customers, ensuring their needs are met and they feel valued throughout the process.

Q. Aside from Aviation, please describe any of your hobbies, passion, or interests?

I enjoy using my digital marketing skills, particularly in social media, to support marginalized communities and amplify the voices of those who may not have a platform otherwise. A good book is also always refreshing.

Q. How does AirKenya's Reservations department work with other departments, such as Flight Operations, to ensure a seamless experience for passengers?

AirKenya's Reservations department collaborates closely with other departments to ensure a seamless experience for passengers. We work together with Flight Operations to stay updated on flight schedules, communicate changes, and assist passengers with rebooking or alternative arrangements when necessary.

Q. Can you describe the team dynamics and company culture within AirKenya's Reservations department? The Reservations department operates as a team, with employees working together to handle

customer inquiries, ticket reservations, and other related tasks. As much as we have our individual tasks, we also work together to find appropriate solutions in handling customer complaints or issues that may arise. The AirKenya culture is customer-centric, and we endeavor to perform our duties with accuracy and attention to detail.

Q. How would you rate the career growth opportunities for employees at AirKenya. I would rate the opportunities for growth in ones’ career at AirKenya as highly favorable and I am a testament of this. An opportunity can open up in any of the subsidiaries either in Tanzania with Regional Air, in Uganda with AeroLink or at AirKenya and Management is always willing to give staff an opportunity to work even if for a limited period of time in any of the companies in the group if one is a good performer and is interested in the opportunity.

Q. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in pursuing a career in airline reservations?

Firstly, research about the industry, acquire the relevant skills and take the relevant courses to acquire certification. Furthermore, look for opportunities to gain practical experience in the travel industry like doing internships and or industrial attachments.
