CATRIN WELZ-STEIN

Catrin Welz-Stein is an artist that is known for her unique art of combining drawings with art from those days of yore. With magic in her pen, creates digital works of art that melds centuries together in an instant. Her work ignites nostalgia yet at the same time it contrasts and highlights the contemporary. Made with old photographs from the 1900’s or with old illustrations from the 1700’s, Catrin’s knack for piecing and melting them together with her computer, allows these old images to belong right in the present.

During her studies in Graphic Design in Darmstadt, Germany, Catrin was introduced to the fields of photography, illustration and digital image processing. These gave her a new perspective on the possibilities to visualize ideas and to transport them into images. It shaped her artistic vision and soon she was able to see an image not only from the aesthetic, but also its message behind it.

Her first encounter with the wonderful work of Anahata Katkin, an artist who combines old illustrations with drawings from her scratch book to create beautiful pictures, further became her muse. The mix of different mediums of old and new together inspired her to create collages of old illustrations and photographs. Catrin reveals, “Looking at old photographs, I always wonder what is the story behind the scene, and this inspires me to create my own story to it … The difficult thing with creativity is that you can’t switch it on when you like to. It comes and goes. Therefore, it is helpful to be ready when creativity comes to you”.

“Je fais de la peinture et du dessin. Ces derniers temps, c’est surtout du dessin.

Mon travail sur les intérieurs a pour origine mes souvenirs d’enfance, avec ses images de pensionnat, de greniers et de granges. Comme pour tout le monde, il y a des lieux, des espaces, des atmosphères, des lumières qui m’ont marqué, qui se sont enfouis en moi. Les lieux de ma vie, de ma mémoire.

Même s’il a un lien avec la réalité, les endroits que je dessine, que je peins, sont irréels. Je veux cependant que les choses que je représente soient crédibles. Je cherche à leur apporter la personnalité, la vie, l’aura qui leur permettront d’entrer en relation avec celui qui regarde.

Je mets en scène, j’ordonnance. Le silence est là. La lumière est à l’oeuvre. Mais on ne voit personne. Même si c’est paradoxal, tenter de représenter cette absence m’intéresse beaucoup.

Tout cela se fait sous la forme d’un lent cheminement vers un équilibre, vers quelque chose d’impossible à définir à l’avance. Quand arrêter ? Jusqu’où décrire ? C’est le travail en cours qui me le dit, qui finit par me faire comprendre ce que je cherche.

Chaque pièce prend vite sa personnalité. Les choses se mettent en place. Je passe avec chacune d’elles plusieurs semaines, le jour, la nuit. J’avance très prudemment.

Je pratique beaucoup le dessin sur la carte à gratter. J’y suis venu il y a quelques années. J’aime ce noir profond mais si fragile. La surface n’accepte pas d’esquisse, chaque trait est définitif. J’aime le pouvoir qui m’est donné de dessiner directement la lumière. Les blancs apparaissent sous mes gestes, sous l’écriture du scalpel.

Cela nécessite de la méthode, des efforts de concentration et de la patience que je soutiens avec un certain contentement. Le monde tourne vite autour de moi, mais je m’attache à donner aux choses le temps dont elles ont besoin pour exister.

Les pièces se succèdent, je suis mon chemin. Ce sont mes traces.”
