You can't do good work for your customers if you can't keep yourself in business. And you can't keep yourself in business unless you charge enough to make a reasonable profit. Most people understand this.

A few though, like this guy, have yet to learn that there's nothing more expensive than cheap design professionals.

by B. Dione Boles

Dione Boles usually works with pencil and pastels, but her interest in painting started 7 years ago.

Her inspiration came from other local artists in Las Vegas. Before having her son, she drew family and friends. Later, her son came up across her old portfolio and encouraged her to draw again.

Boles went back to college and graduated with an associate of arts degree in 2012 from College of Southern Nevada.

Art and technology have a multifaceted, but meaningful history of working together and influencing one another. They both have evolved with each other to come to the place in the world we live in today; a digital age where they constantly intersect and reveal new ideas.

In mediums of 2D, 3D, and new media, we invited contemporary artists to explore futuristic styles of fantasy, glitch, and/or anime.

Mexican American artist, Luis Varela-Rico, is the juror for this show. Luis’s diverse knowledge of machinery and their application have formulated an artistic approach which integrates CNC, welding, CAD design formats to create several highly acclaimed public art projects in Southern Nevada and private commissions across the United States. While his Mexican heritage deeply grounds his cultural and familial heritage, his professional education and career experience are uniquely positioned in the technological landscape of Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2021, his work caught the eye of television producers and was featured as a participant in Netflix original show Metal Shop Masters.

Board Schedules Hearing Regarding Executive Order

Governor Lombardo issued two executive orders in January. Executive Order 2023-003 requires a review of existing regulations, including a recommendation for removal of not less than ten regulations. Executive Order 2023-004 requires occupational and professional licensing boards to show cause for licensing requirements. The text of both orders can be found on the governor’s website

The board appreciates those who have already reached out to express their comments and concerns regarding the executive orders. Both executive orders will be discussed at the upcoming March 21 virtual board meeting.

The board will hold a hearing regarding proposed regulations to be removed or revised (EO 2023-003) at 10:00am on March 21. Notice of hearing and supporting documents are posted on the board website

The board will also discuss EO 2023-004 at the March 21 meeting. The agenda, scheduled time of the discussion, and a link to the meeting will be posted on the board website on March 16.

Anyone interested in these matters is welcome to attend the meeting, which will be held via Zoom, to listen and submit public comment. Persons who would like to send comments in writing before the meeting can send them to Executive Director Monica Harrison. All comments submitted in writing prior to the meeting will be shared with board members and included in the report sent to the governor.

Per the governor’s directive, the board will respond to the executive orders after carefully reviewing and considering all comments. The responses will be issued by April 1 and May 1.

Two New Members Join Board

Daniel Coletti and Marie Wikoff participated in their first meeting as new board members in January. Coletti and Wikoff were appointed by Governor Sisolak last year. Their terms run through Oct. 2025.

Coletti, the board’s new residential designer, is the Owner of Sun West Custom Homes, LLC in Las Vegas. A residential designer since 2007, Coletti is also a licensed general contractor and real estate broker. He was chosen by the National Association of Home Builders to design and build the 2019, 2020 and 2024 New American Homes. Coletti earned an Associate Degree in Construction from Pasco Hernando State College.

Wikoff, owner of Reno-based Wikoff Design Studio, joins the board as its newest Registered Interior Designer. A registered interior designer since 2006, Wikoff earned her BFA in Interior Design from the Design Institute of San Diego. She holds many industry accreditations including, EvidenceBased Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC), American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (CHID), USGBC LEED AP, and is an NCIDQ Certificate holder.

Board Addresses Review And Seal

The board issued a memorandum regarding review and seal, or "over stamping," at its January 2023 meeting. It states, in part:

“Architects, registered interior designers and residential designers may not ‘over stamp,’ or simply review and seal documents. Documents bearing the registrant’s stamp and signature, whether submitted to a building department or architectural review committee, must be prepared under the registrant’s responsible control.”

Ncarb Eliminates The Are Rolling Clock Policy

The AIA 2030 Commitment sets ambitious achievable targets for carbon reduction –leveraging your influence in the design process. By signing on you gain access to the best practices and comparative tools to track your performance.

• ARCHITECTS HAVE THE POWER TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

The 2030 Commitment enables firms of all sizes to advance energy-efficient and resilient design approaches while elevating their practice, boosting their profile and saving money for clients.

• SAVE ENERGY, SAVE MONEY

A typical 2,500 square-foot single-family home in Mobile, Alabama designed to perform 70% better than the 2030 baseline would yield the following approximate annual savings.

• 22.6 MWh less energy

• $2,050 in energy cost

• 9 metric tons of CO2e reduction

• BUILDINGS GENERATE NEARLY 40% OF ANNUAL GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS.

• DESIGN PRACTICES HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT ON BUILDING ENERGY USE

Architects have the most influence on Design JOIN THE MOVEMENT NOW! AIA.ORG/2030 COMMITMENT https://www.ncarb.org/blog/ncarb-retiring-the-rolling-clock-policy

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) is retiring the Architect Registration Examination (ARE®) rolling clock policy and implementing a new score validity policy, effective May 1, 2023.

Under the new policy, passed ARE divisions from both the current and prior versions of the exam will be valid. This national policy change will reinstate the validity of all passed ARE 4.0 divisions, taken between 2008 and 2018. NCARB will be working with licensing boards across the U.S. to facilitate adoption at the state level.

For current test takers, this means the validity of their ARE 5.0 divisions will be extended through the next iteration of the exam (likely ARE 6.0), effectively doubling score validity to at least 10 years.

Analysis of the impact of the rolling clock showed that the policy disproportionally impacted women and people of color and continuing the policy would hinder progress toward equity in the architectural profession. Psychometric study and additional research into exam content showed that the new policy – based upon exam version, not a fixed timeframe - would be more effective than the previous policy in ensuring candidate competency.

“This research-backed decision to eliminate the rolling clock policy was unanimously supported by the Board of Directors and the new score validity policy will maintain the integrity of the exam while making the ARE more equitable,” said NCARB President Bayliss Ward, NCARB, AIA.

Some jurisdictions have existing rules and laws related to the fiveyear rolling clock policy that may not automatically update with the NCARB change. NCARB’s goal is to work with all Member Boards toward eliminating rolling clock-type policies as soon as possible.

NCARB will be automatically reinstating the validity of any previously expired ARE 4.0 divisions for all candidates that are testing in a jurisdiction that does not have a jurisdictional level rolling clock requirement. All reinstated ARE 4.0 divisions will be used to calculate appropriate ARE 5.0 credits under the new score validity policy. Any ARE 5.0 credits based on ARE 4.0 divisions will remain valid until the end of ARE 5.0 delivery. All passed exams prior to the 2008 ARE 4.0 launch remain invalid.
