Aia Las Vegas Educational Outreach Committee

John O. Torpey, AIA Chair

The committee was again busy with activities in February and planning for events in March. We’ve completed numerous classroom visits mentoring students at Lied STEM Academy (LSA) as well as a speaking engagement with one classroom of math students.

Working within Mr. Gavin Romzek’s Design/Drafting class curriculum at LSA our committee has provided two hours a week of instruction during class time. This has provided a chance to interact with 7th and 8th grade students and to provide some additional perspective of classroom material to real world implications. Students are interested in architecture and in the design process. During the speaking engagement with the math students, I was able to review with the students the importance that math has in architecture and the concept of building upon your math skills in order to understand the science of design and construction. The accompanying pictures show students discussing a project drawing that included a glulam truss.

We are scheduled to participate in two more career fairs:

March 3rd at Canyon Springs High School and

March 9th at Coronado High School.

We are looking forward to continuing with this venue and have models, visual presentation material and handouts describing the steps necessary to become an architect.
